Three very valuable promotion chasing points, a clean sheet and up to second in the table was the outcome of Tuesday evening’s great 4-0 victory over a rather different looking Greenwich Borough from the last two season’s. Goals coming from recent newcomer, Youssef Bamba, Club captain Sam Adams and a late brace from our in-form strike ace Daniel Ajakaiye. Well done boys - same today please! Great to see back-to-back clean sheet wins with Charlie Horlock picking up Tuesday’s ‘Man of the Match’ award from match sponsor M&W Sales & Lettings for his great performance between the sticks. Today’s visitors currently sit in 17th position in the league table with 7 points from 10 matches. Three Bridges have recorded two Bostik SE wins, 2-0 at home over Sevenoaks Town and an away win at Ashford United by 4 goals to 2. A full listing of their results for this season to date can be found on the centre pages. Three Bridges exited the FA Cup and FA Trophy at the Preliminary round stage of both competitions. Thank you for your support this afternoon ... I hope you enjoy the match ... Win it boys! ... COYU’s ...

MANAGER’S NOTES
Chris Agutter
Good afternoon everyone. It’s been a while since we’ve spoken about the Academy and all the great work that continues to be done under the First Team ..... Kicking off with the U23’s who are being lead brilliantly by Andrew Brown and Steve Sands. It’s a unique coaching role within the Club as our U23’s comprises of the in-form U19’s and First Team players that need the game time, therefore stability in terms of squad selection is often lacking. However, both Browny and Sandsy have made a magnificent start to the season overseeing the development of the next crop of exciting U’s talent, ensuring the team is competitive whilst prioritising the individual development needs of the players.
... our fantastic U’s support can rest assured there is more local talent on the conveyor! ...
Under the 23’s age group we have the former U’s First Team Manager Sean Ray who oversees the Academy’s Professional Development Phase - ages 16-18 years ...... again credit to Razor who is overseeing multiple age groups where he is challenging players on the development front and keeping each age group competitive whilst ensuring the ‘style’ of football is consistent with First Team expectations. Next is again that man Andrew Brown who as well as being the First Team Assistant Manager and U23’s Lead Coach, oversees the Academy Youth Development Phase - ages 13-15 years ..... similar to Razor Browny is doing a fantastic job ..... we’ve worked together for nearly a decade, he’s an exceptional coach, someone who I implicitly trust, whom Hastings United are very lucky to have at their disposal ...... I’m convinced he will go onto big things!! Between Razor and Browny, whilst working under Director of Football Dean White, the Academy is going from strength to strength and continues to develop local, homegrown talent ..... names to look out for include Charlie Curran and Cameron Harding in the U23’s, Tom Chalmers and Alfie Warner in the U18’s, and Louie Hoad and Alfie Peacock in the U16’s ...... these lads, plus many more, are in safe hands and our fantastic U’s support can rest assured there is more local talent on the conveyor!

MATCHBALL SPONSOR Tom’s association with the U’s goes back to October 1979, when he started as a part-time groundsman under the newly appointed manager, Peter Sillett, with the remit of mowing, rolling and marking out the pitch. His tasks were made more onerous due to poor drainage under the Pilot Field, turning the playing surface into a mudbath by Christmas. Other daily tasks followed, including harrowing the speedway track, picking up litter, sweeping the stands and terraces, cleaning the dressing rooms and many other menial tasks, not to mention acting as Physio on a number of occasions. This role continued on and off until the late 1990’s when he took on the mantle of matchday PA Announcer until his retirement in 2012.

Even to this day, he still looks for the U’s result first every Saturday, and although he’s now moved to Eastbourne, he can still be seen at home matches carrying on his support.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted and serious look at football (not necessarily just football) at all levels, those who play, those who administrate and those of us who follow our various teams in this vast, lop sided pyramid of the game. At all times, views expressed are mine.
HERE WE GO AGAIN Three Bridges are here this afternoon – adjusting to life back in the Bostik League. We have had mixed results against them in previous encounters. I was at the game at their place a couple or three seasons ago when we leaked three goals in a dismal first-half spell – ended up losing 2-3. All being well there will be better memories of today's game to look back on. Tuesday night, 4-0, clean sheet, three points, back up to second – and Man of the Match Charlie Horlock. A big win always goes down well but I think Greenwich Borough were a little hard done by. But never mind eh! That more than made up for the 2-5 drubbing they gave us here last season. They were a top 5 club for their first two seasons but times have obviously changed there, as what was a decent side is largely no more and they find themselves at the other end of the table and on Tuesday only had the one sub. All a bit weird really that our keeper ended up Man of the Match! What a good attendance. 409 on a Tuesday evening in Bostik SE is one of the better midweek gates you'll see.
SMARTPHONES RULE Well, they do, don't they? Just about everything you need is on that screen. I have Satnav in the car but it's a bit ancient so I link my phone up to it via
Possibly, no definitely, the worst football themes advert - Eden Hazard telling us (unintelligibly) how good Lotus biscuits are. 16
Bluetooth and use the bang up-to-date maps facility to get me wherever United are playing. It's not 100% perfect, nothing and NOTHING beats having your mate next to you telling you it's the next left just after that white van – but it's still pretty good, especially if you're on your own. Keeping up with other games – I use Footballwebpages. Before you're pulling out of the car park at 5.00 pm you're all up-to-date on what else has been going on in Bostik SE. Back in the days of 450 mile round trips into the depths of the old Beazer Homes Prem, you often didn't get other results till you got home, sometimes approaching midnight. And sometimes not till you got a paper the next morning. I still recall – fondly – fatso breakfasts at Dimarcos opposite Wellington Square on a Sunday morning, filling my face while perusing all the results. Hmmm, maybe that was better! Gut bucket brekkie, several cups of tea, couple of smokes, read the paper – oh so civilised! But for sheer speed of getting up-todate – that phone does the job. Having said all that – some places were good for getting you up-to-date with other results. Reading about Terry White's centre circle free kick at Halesowen Town that caught their keeper off his line, 23-24 years ago in the days when we visited places where they spoke with weird accents. The Birmingham Sports Argus was on sale before we boarded the train back to Euston, waxing lyrical about the goal that won us the game. I think that was the day Phil Donaldson and I got a cab from New Street station and got taken to Halesowen Harriers by a cabby who clearly wasn't too clued up on the semi-pro football layout in and around Birmingham. He duly failed to turn up at the appointed time after the game so we got a bus back to New Street. Cheaper and definitely more reliable! Smartphones, of course, have their disadvantages. When I think back to my regular days of, er, Saturday overtime (Have to pay the bills, Dear) or should I say blatant lies about my whereabouts, coincidentally when Hastings Town were on their travels, an excuse (another blatant lie) about my phone yet again running out of battery power would probably have lost it's validity after being used for the 28th consecutive Saturday. Not everything they're cracked out to be, eh!
OUR LEVEL I wonder what you all aspire to? Where should United be playing their football? For me, a safe blood pressure level would be holding our own in National South. That would take me back to the days of 1995-1996 when we had a good season in the Beazer Homes Southern Premier division. That was a few years prior to the formation of the Conference South and North divisions (2004-2005) which meant Southern Premier clubs were a couple of promotions away from the Football League – and a rather better standard Southern Premier than what we have today. Seeing a United side doing nicely in the top half of National South would do me just fine. It wasn't long after that 95-96 season that a local Lottery winner came on board and there was talk of the football league in 5 years, which ended up with relegation by rulebook 18 months later, as many of you will recall. Hastings Town, as we were in those days, were by no means the only club to go through the jitters of the semi-pro game. And certainly not the only club to go through a phase of money no object followed by a loss of interest by the benefactor. I recall only too well an old railway mate of mine, Jim Joines – sadly no longer with us – who followed Stamco next door - saying “I'll be interested to see how long it lasts” when we were talking about Mark Gardiner taking over here in 1997. Of the 22 clubs in the Beazer Homes Premier in 1995-96, maybe 9 are still around today in much the same shape. Rushden & Diamonds became divorced from their long time benefactor, Gloucester lost their new ground to flooding, Worcester relegated themselves a couple of years ago to the Midland League, Merthyr Tydfil have had a couple of upheavals and so it goes on. We probably hit basement level in 2003-2004 when we were nowhere near good enough for a top 7 or 8 finish in the Southern League's Eastern Division which would've been enough to get us back in the new look Southern Premier. That was around the start of the Dave Walters era.
Whyteleafe recently. A near miss as new signing Youssuf Bamba goes so close on his United debut. This is a still off a video I shot and illustrates how good phone cameras are these days.
Oh Dimarco's. Remember Old Curly who used to flog the Argus opposite on Saturday evenings? That had the afternoon's results on the back page.
How times and teams move on - best part of half United's team celebrate going 1-0 up at Dorking Wanderers in that play-off semi-final 18 months ago. Just Crutts remains from this picture, today.
WARMER CLIMES AWAIT I detest the day the clocks go back – instant depression. So, next Thursday will see me at Gatwick heading for the Philippines for three weeks of 30 Degree plus temperatures. The big game at Cray on Sunday week will be closely followed via that Smartphone!

TODAY’S VISITORS
Founded in 1901, Three Bridges joined the Mid Sussex Football League in 1902 and were Champions of that League for the first time in the 1907/08 season. Their first major success came in 1933/34, when they won the Sussex Junior Cup, and sundry other minor honours came their way before they joined the Sussex County Football League in 1952/53, and two years later were crowned Second Division Champions. In 1962/63 they won the Division Two Invitation Cup and in 1968/69, 1973/74 and 1979/80 were Second Division Runners Up. 1970/71 produced an against the odds triumph when winning the League’s Invitation Cup against Southwick (3-2). The 1980’s heralded a run of successes, starting with reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in 1981/82 before losing at Molesey (1-2). A season later they made it to the last 32 but also won the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time, beating Hastings Town 3-2. Another year on saw them finish runners up in the Thorn EMI National sixa-side tournament, winning a set of floodlights. 1985/86 saw them finish as County League Division One runners up, a feat they repeated in both 1987/88 (when they also won the RUR Cup again) and 1988/89. A fire destroyed their clubhouse in 1993 which re-focused their priorities and ultimately resulted in relegation in 1996/97. They won the Division 2 League Cup a season later and then finished runners up in Division 2 to regain Division 1 status. They were RUR Cup runners up in 2003/04 and then winners of that same prestigious trophy in 2007/08. In season 2010/11 hopes were high when they started by winning their first nine League
20
HISTORY
games, but eventually finished the season in 5th place. However they did win the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup for the first time that season, beating Rye United 2-1, a tremendous feat that they achieved again in 2011/12, this time AFC Uckfield being defeated 2-1. It looked like being another tough League campaign when they lost four of the first nine matches, but then lost only one of the remaining 29 games, which was concluded by beating Championship rivals Rye United 1-0 at home on the final day of the season! This tremendous run meant the club had achieved its ambition and become Sussex County Football League Champions. With a superb run in the FA Vase too, losing in the last 32 on a penalty shoot out with Derbyshire side, Gresley FC, the 2011/12 ‘Double’ season had undoubtedly been the best in Three Bridges’ history. Their first season in the Ryman Isthmian Football League South Division saw them struggle for much of the time. However, having been 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table in mid February, they went on a run of 11 matches that produced 7 victories, 2 draws and just 2 defeats, earning them Team of the Month Awards in both March and April as a result. It meant that they survived the drop, but their second season in the Ryman League saw them struggle at times again but some key signings midway through the season helped them to 19th place. The 2014/15 season saw an even greater improvement with a healthy mixture of youth and experience guiding them into 7th position and, whilst they were happy to score 94 League goals, they were less than happy about the 95 they conceded! They improved their defensive record in conceding 67 goals in season 2015/16 but only scored 59, hardly helped by long-term injuries to strike partners Allan Tait and Tony Garrod. With 66 points, they slumped to 14th position, although they only accumulated 6 points fewer than in the previous campaign!
THREE BRIDGES FC
Bostik League Division One South East AVERAGE ATTENDANCES
Bridges maintained most of that season's squad for the 2016/17 campaign. However, with at least 11 first team players out injured by September, they had to use a lot of the U21s, Academy and U18s players and by November had lost 12 games in a row, drew three and won just one game. Towards the end of the season, they strengthened the squad but it was too late to avoid relegation. For the 2017/18 season, Bridges kept a few of the best of the players from the current season and strengthened the team with more experienced players in the hope of promotion once again. Having dispensed with the services of Simon Wormull, Paul Hammond and Danny Lee from the coaching team and folding the Academy team, Bridges also strengthened the management team with the additions of the experienced ex-Bridges player, Martin Dynan as Assistant Manager, and UEFA ‘A’ licensed Coach, Marc Wardley. That season turned out to be an extremely tough one with every team wanting to beat us. However, Bridges accomplished what they set out to do by gaining promotion back to the Bostik League having finished second place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division, just one point behind the winners, Haywards Heath Town, and despite having only lost 3 games all season. The 2018/19 season sees Martin Dynan take over the reins as First Team Manager and he has appointed Liam Collins as jointAssistant Manager/Player, alongside Keith George. Paul Faili stood down as First Team Manager at the end of last season after 25 years in the Club’s management set up and will now continue to solely concentrate on his role as Club Chairman. Martin Dynan has also recruited a new U23s manager in Oliver Saunders, another UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach, to work closely with the First Team in developing both the U23s and U18s.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH THREE BRIDGES FC
The first meeting between the two clubs took place at the Jubilee Field on Saturday, 18th October, 1952 when we, then Hastings & St. Leonards, and they were both founder members of Division Two of the Sussex County League, a match we lost 1-4: In fact we did not defeat Three Bridges in our first three league seasons only doing so at the eighth attempt. Later, Three Bridges were to be our last ever opponents before we left our former home on the upper pitch at The Firs as we played our final Sussex County League game, a Division One fixture which we lost by the odd goal of three, Alan Ramsay netting for us from the penalty spot, on the evening of Wednesday, 15th May, 1985.
Our next encounter was a second round Sussex Senior Cup tie staged here on Tuesday, 20th November, 1990 when we won 3-1 with a Roger Alexander penalty and goals from Ian Kuypers and Keith Miles, the attendance that night being 162. However, there was then a twenty-two year gap until we met prior to their first season in the Ryman League Division One (South): Ironically, a second meeting then took place here in the third round of the Isthmian League Cup. ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 3rd November.
1956 There was no change at the top of Division One with none of the top six being beaten on this day: Leaders Manchester United maintained their two point advantage on Tottenham Hotspur as the Reds beat Wolves 3-0 while Spurs edged it 3-2 at Portsmouth. It was a different picture in Division Two where leaders Leicester City retained top spot despite being held 1-1 at home by lowly Swansea Town, however, the second and third placed sides exchanged positions after their meeting when Stoke City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1. In Division Three (South) leaders Torquay United were the only one of the top four to win defeating Reading at home 3-1 while second placed Southampton crashed 0-4 at improving Brentford while third placed Colchester played out a goal less draw at Brighton.
We, then Hastings & St. Leonards, entertained fellow Sussex County League Division Two side Goldstone on the Upper Pitch in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup but we went out after losing 2-5, their goals scored by Alan Catt and Fred Crouch. However, the original Hastings United earned a tie in the first round of the F.A. Cup after winning 2-0 at Horsham in a fourth qualifying round tie.
1990 Division One leaders Liverpool did not play until the following day when they would meet third placed Tottenham Hotspur, allowing Arsenal to move within a point after they won 2-0 at Coventry City with both goals netted by Anders Limpar. Crystal Palace retained fourth place despite losing 0-2 at Manchester United for whom Danny Wallace and Neil Webb were on target. It was also no change at the top of Division Two despite leaders Oldham Athletic being held 2-2 at third placed Sheffield Wednesday. Between the pair were West Ham United who improved their position with a 1-0 win at Notts. County. In mid-table Brighton exchanged places with Ipswich Town after the Seagulls won 3-1 at Portman Road. With Southend United not playing Grimsby Town were able to take over the leadership of Division Three albeit only on difference after a goal less draw at Exeter City. Third placed Stoke City missed the chance to close the gap being beaten 0-1 at home by Reading. Division Four leaders Torquay United remained unbeaten after fourteen league games after a 0-0 draw at York City; seven points back only goal difference separated Burnley and Northampton Town.
We, then still Hastings Town, visited Erith & Belvedere in the Southern Division of the Southern League where we won 2-1, before a crowd of 242, with goals from Paul Giles and a home defender.
2012 Manchester United took over the leadership of the Barclays Premiership after being the only top eight sides to record a win with a 2-1 home victory against Arsenal. It was Chelsea that dropped out of first place after being held 1-1 at mid-table Swansea City. Third placed Manchester City also drew playing out a goal less draw at West Ham United. Cardiff City retained the leadership of Coca Cola Championship despite being defeated by the odd goal of three at lowly Bolton Wanderers, however, they only kept the top spot on goal difference from Middlesbrough who had won 4-1 at Charlton Athletic.; Crystal Palace moving into third place above Leicester City after a 2-0 win against Blackburn Rovers. It was F.A. Cup first round day and we progressed with a 2-1 victory at Bishop’s Stortford, our goals scored by Zac Attwood and Sean Ray. Meanwhile a second sussex also went into the next round after Crawley Town won 2-1 at Imber Court where Billy Clarke and Tony Simpson put Town two up, the Metropolitan Police only managing a consolation goal in added time. United’s next round opponents Harrogate Town won 1-0 at Torquay United.
