HUFC vs Sevenoaks Town FC - ILSE

Page 1

Our Take on U.

Its finally here, the last game of the season!

We want to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to all at HUFC.

Since we first stepped through the gates back in October we have been welcomed into the HUFC family - from Billy Wood with his weekly handshake to #1 Louis Rogers with his end of match fist pumps.

HUFC wouldn't be what it is without the amazing community behind it, all who play a vital part in its success - Club President David Ormerod, Commercial Director Hayley Clout, Radio (Adam) Carder, SBTS Chris Laverick and of course the Hastings Barmy Army are just a few of the members we have had the pleasure of getting to know over the season.

Some of our season highlights include: Dylan accompanying his hero Louis Rogers onto the pitch last weekend, Elleana presenting Sammy Adams with a trophy to mark his 600th game, Partygate, Dylan being gifted with both his goalkeepers shirt from Billy and goalkeepers gloves from Louis, player sponsorships, the pitch invasion at Faversham and of course last weeks Champions celebrations!

This weekend we celebrate 7 years of marriage, and there's no place else we'd rather be than at what has come to be our second home, the Pilot Field, surrounded by the HUFC family. As well as Matt's folks who are now regulars, we have also invited along Lynda's parents and sister for their first HUFC experience today!

We have included some pictures of some of our favourite HUFC moments to date... enjoy! See you in the Isthmian Premier! #COYU

MATCH SPONSORS

Billy Wood Welcome

Welcome everyone to The Continental Pilot Field for our last game of the Isthmian SouthEast League Season, our last in this division as we move to the Premier next year as CHAMPIONS!

I would like to welcome the board, committee, management, staff, players and supporters of Sevenoaks Town, who have had a remarkable turnaround under Harry Hudson and I expect a really tough game today.

Last Saturday was surreal, to be able to see our team lift the trophy in front of you all was a dream come true but made me more determined for future success. This town deserves it and I am delighted we are doing all we can do deliver it. However, not one to damper things I must stress I still do not have any answers from the council on how we can make The Pilot Field long term work and fear this summer that the main stand will have serious maintenance work needed. I am getting a little bored of these pre-election

Club CEO/Chairman

games and the council need to start communicating with us. I do not want to see our football club out of the borough so I am urging you all to put pressure on, together let’s get them understanding the severity around the lack of facilities in Hastings and what we can do to deliver them, not hinder today and tomorrow’s generations.

At this time, I would like to thank all the volunteers who have worked tirelessly across the club. Without your dedication we do not breathe life into this community so thank you, you are the heartbeat, I am just your biggest cheerleader.

Let’s finish off with another win and get ready for a summer like no other, it’s Prem time!!!

The Gaffer

Gary Elphick

Afternoon and a warm welcome to today’s fixture against Sevenoaks Town.

Sevenoaks have been in fantastic form since the arrival of Harry Hudson, and I’m expecting a tough game.

It’s been great in recent weeks to win the league but also to break the points record. I felt this group of players deserved to leave some kind of legacy behind.

Anyway enjoy our last home game of the season, a big thanks to everyone connected to the club!

Onwards and upwards!

HASTINGS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB
& OFFICIALS
www.hastingsunited.com

Good afternoon everyone.

Welcome back to the Continental Pilot Field as we are now officially CHAMPIONS with a trophy!

I can't believe it's the last game and what a season it's been! This Club is something very special with great people involved in it and it's only the beginning as we start next season in the Premier Division. Saturday's celebrations were like a dream and to finally hold the trophy along with my family is a memory I will treasure forever. Thank you to everyone who made that happen and were part of it, what a brilliant day it was with some great photos and videos shared.

As it's the last game I would like to say a few words. I would personally like to thank my fellow directors, Dave O and Paul our Programme Editor for all their support this season and the amazing jobs they do within the Club. I would like to thank my family who run the Club Shop, Scott for all the photos, all the players, management team, backroom staff for all their hard work, dedication and getting us promotion. A massive thank you to all our amazing volunteers, stewards, staff and the fans, without you all we wouldn't be where we are today.

Finally, a big thank you to Bob who supports the Club in lots of different ways, to all our Sponsors, Business Partners, Player Sponsors and everyone who has supported us through Covid until this day. Also, a mention to our women's team who narrowly missed out on promotion this season but I know will all be back stronger together ready for next season.

Commercial Director Hayley Clout

I would like to welcome and thank our Match Sponsors to today's game Lynda and Matt Stack who first started supporting the U's back in October and are now part of our amazing football family. They attend today's game with their children and family and are also celebrating their Wedding Anniversary.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

We hope you all have a great day with us and thank you both so much for your continued support.

I would also like to welcome and continually thank Bob H who is our Matchball Sponsor for every league game, Bob does so much for the Club and we thank him for his continued support both with the first and the ladies team.

I would finally like to welcome and thank our Mascots to today's game, Macy, Paige, Harry, Tom, Bertie, Mason, Stanley, Teddy, Thomas, Max, Harrison, Riley and Archey.

We hope you all enjoy your day with us and the complete matchday experience.

Enjoy the game, the end of season celebrations and hopefully 3 points!

Have a great summer and see you all very soon. Hayley x

Gut Feeling

Simon Stoddart

My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.

FORM TEAMS MEET AGAIN

The last time United came up against a team on a better run was Burgess Hill here - January 22nd. And with a top exhibition from the Hillbillies on loan goalkeeper, they left here with 3 points. United haven't lost a game since then - 11 wins and 2 draws g/f 29 g/a 5. Hmmmmm, that superstition of mine about quoting numbers of games unbeaten blah blah blah - but this is the last game so .........

Today - yes, last game of a season that none of us can have envisaged after losing at Haywards Heath on 27th November - we find ourselves up against a Sevenoaks side that has undergone a tremendous turnaround of it's own - six consecutive wins with just 2 goals conceded and a comfortable mid-table placing after spending much of the season in the doldrums.

We will conclude 21-22 with another tough game against a side that must be full of confidence. Paul sent me the relevant stats of the two form sides of the division. We shall see!

RECORD POINTS TOTAL

85 points - hopefully 88 at 5pm - is apparently a record for the division. Well, yes and no. There have been various changes in recent seasons that make such a 'stat' rather pointless, really. Cray Wanderers won the league with 82 points in 18-19, but that was from 36 games. The division finished that season a team down after the demise of Thamesmead and the previous two seasons, for starters, featured 46 games. Carshalton champions in 17-18 with 102 points and Tooting & Mitcham topped the division in 16-17 with 105. That, incidentally, was the season we went goal mad - all 128 of them.

The last two seasons, of course, don't count. This season has been a remarkable one for United - last Saturday with 2,084 here was spectacular for various reasons - the brainless mess clean up outside, the post match celebrations and Kenny's goal (what with that one plus the FA Cup screamer at Chippenham, the big fella's won goal of the season twice). Finishing top of the pile and watching those four sides battle through the lottery of the play- offs is record enough, eh?

DIET COKE MAYHEM

Petty rules'n regs - we come across them everywhere. And the Sussex FA have come up with some that frankly defy logic. Phil

Donaldson - pretty mild mannered fella I've known through football for 30 plus years - he had his bag searched outside Culver Road on Easter Monday (why?) and had to hand over two cans of Diet Coke - not allowed to take them in the ground (why?).

Culver Road, where Lancing play, is also the HQ of the Sussex FA and these directives about searching bags originate with that organisation, not Lancing FC. The Barmy Army was unable to take it's drum in (why?) - another weird and wonderful extract from the Sussex FA compendium of pointless rules'n regs.

Dare I confess to having violated pointless rule 37.4 section b, sub para 2, clause 14? I entered the ground with a bottle of Fanta in my pocket ....... OMG! Whatever you do, don't tell the Sussex FA!

YOUR PROGRAMME EDITOR!

Paul Hoggard, who I met for the first time after the Phoenix Sports game - been working with him 5 years on the programme with all communication being on line - was at the VCD game last weekend. Well, some of it. He lives up in the Midlands and his drive down to Hastings was disrupted by the Dartford Bridge being closed by eco weirdo protesters.

Anyway, here are the two of us with our facial fuzz variants on show. I'm the good looking one on the left .......

Phil Donaldson with the searched bagbereft of his Diet Coke

Special mention for Adam Carder and his radio commentary - Paul was able to keep up with the VCD game as he made his delayed way South.

AND SO THE SEASON ENDS

Pretty straightforward win at Lancing on Easter Monday though not without Louis having work to do in goal. New ground for me, that's number 137. Small fry compared to Peter Miller who produces those detailed PPG tables which define who plays-off in steps 4 and 5. He is up to 496. I would've given more coverage of his excellent work but as we were involved in business at the other end of the league with PPG happily not a factor, I didn't.

continued on P15

Gut Feeling

Simon Stoddart

from P13

You can find @petermiller36 on Twitter - all his detailed work on ups and downs is there.

Not only Culver Road where weird rules'n regs are imposed. Ground grading gone madWelwyn Garden City in step 4 Southern League Central - in with a shout of the play-offs and have failed ground grading which not only stops them going up but - salt rubbed in wound - relegates them. There's the school of thought that they knew what the rules were etc etc but - really? Who puts together rules'n regs like this? Who proposes them, who passes them? A season wrecked flicking through the pages of a rule book. What with 2 years plus of Covid mayhem you'd have thought a more tolerant attitude might prevail?

Player of the season. That's difficult because it has been a 100% team effort - on and off the pitch - to get Isthmian Premier Division football next season. My choice - Tom Chalmers or can I choose all of them? And talking of players, how many will we get in over the summer? We await with interest.

3,082, 2,084, 2,017 plus another nine 1,000+ attendances. Lowest of the season733. Covid helped boost semi-pro gates with Premier and EFL grounds empty - people have stayed watching their local team. But the Pilot Field attendances have been unreal. When 949 turned up for Herne Bay back in August how could we have ever thought we would see over 3,000 one afternoon? Long may it continue.

Off the pitch - Gary Elphick and his coaching team. What an outstanding turnaround from where we were in late November. Chris Agutter moved on having laid foundations, huge credit to him, Billy's enthusiasm is infectious - he is as hands on a CEO as you'll ever see, Chris Laverick's excellent podcasts spread the word - you really should check em out.....

Back to Isthmian SE, interesting fixtures today - Phoenix Sports vs Herne Bay, Cray Valley vs Faversham, Haywards Heath vs VCD and the basement sides - Whitstable vs Lancing. The bottom 3 are after that play-off game against a step 5 side while the 3 promotion candidates are after a home semi-final.

AND A NEW SEASON AWAITS

The London area - through the Dartford Tunnel we shall go. Sussex and Kent fixtures - Bognor Regis, Lewes, Horsham, Folkestone Invicta and Margate. And more. The work's going to get a lot harder. Can't wait! ...

SEVENOAKS TOWN

Club: Sevenoaks Town Football Club Club Formed: 1883 (as Vickers)

Nickname: The Oaks

Chairman: Paul Lansdale Manager: Harry Hudson Ground: Greatness Park, Sevenoaks

Sevenoaks Town FC was originally formed in 1883 and they were founder members of the original Kent League, but they left after just one season and wouldn’t return for another 110 years. There are few existing records of the club during that era, but it is known that on 26 April 1893 they played Royal Arsenal, who were at the time the only professional team in the South of England, with over 1,000 spectators watching the game.

In 1906 the club, now known as Sevenoaks Town, became one of the founder members of the Sevenoaks League. In 1951 Town amalgamated with another local club, St. John’s United, and became members of the Kent Amateur League (Western Region), which they won on two occasions. In 1984 the Kent Amateur League was re-organised as the Kent County League and Sevenoaks were the first Premier Division champions, a feat they repeated in seasons 1995–96 and 2002–03.

After over a century playing in almost exclusively amateur leagues, Sevenoaks applied for promotion to the semi-professional Kent League after winning the 02-03 title.

Their first season in the county’s senior

league ended with a respectable 11th place and included a memorable victory away to former Football League side Maidstone United, when they recovered from a 3-1 half-time deficit to win 4-3.

The move to senior level also meant Sevenoaks were eligible for FA competitions. Their first appearance in the FA Vase came in 2004-05, when they lost 2-1 at home to Deal Town.

Their longest run in the competition came in the final season they were eligible, 2017-18, when they made it to the third round proper before losing 3-1 away to Thatcham Town.

Since achieving promotion to the Isthmian League, Town have switched to the FA Trophy. In their first ever match in the competition in 2018-19 they beat former Conference side Grays Athletic 4-2 before losing 2-1 away to Dorking Wanderers, who went on to win the Isthmian Premier Division, in the first qualifying round.

In the FA Cup Town’s best performance came in 2016-17 when they took Chesham to a replay in the second qualifying round and although they’ve yet to meet Football League opposition, one of their most memorable ties

came in 2008-09 when they held Folkestone Invicta to a 4-4 draw at Greatness Park in the preliminary round.

Town led 2-0 and 3-2 but were trailing 4-3 in stoppage time when a free-kick from Dwayne Gibbons earned them a replay, which they eventually lost 4-1.

After a decade during which their highest league position was sixth in 2009-10, Town appointed the former Dartford and Tonbridge player Micky Collins as manager for the 2014-15 season. Having previously won the Kent League title with Erith & Belvedere, Collins oversaw four seasons of progress, which saw the club rise from 16th to eighth, fifth and third in 2016-17, during which they also won the Premier Division Cup.

In 2017-18, having installed a 3G pitch, they won what had since been renamed the Southern Counties East League, for the first time ever and with it promotion to the Isthmian League, coming tenth in their first season, their highest ever position on the pyramid.

Harry Hudson was appointed First Team Manager in February 2022 and took charge of his first game for The Oaks, a 1-1 draw against Corinthian, on February 26th.

Hudson joined the club in February 2022 after departing Southern Counties East Football League Premier side Glebe. Harry left Whyteleafe in May last year, having joined them from Croydon three years previously. Under his tenure Leafe finished eighth and seventh in the Isthmian South East, and were in fourth place when last season shuddered to an early halt.

Hastings lift their trophy ...

Title winners Hastings United welcomed VCD Athletic and went ahead after just six minutes, Jack Dixon with the goal. The hosts, who were celebrating their promotion, had to deal with an attack of mindless vandalism before the game, but VCD vandalised their own chances when they gave Danny Parish the chance to make it two from the spot with twenty-three minutes left. Kenny Pogue made it three with nine minutes remaining, and the two thousand and eighty four watching on began their party.

There was still time for Charles Etumnu to see red for Vickers, but that was that, and the home fans stayed on to watch the trophy being lifted.

Ramsgate have been on a terrible run, a run which has seen them slip out of the play-off place they’ve occupied for most of the season, and they had a task on their hands as they travelled to second place Ashford United. Thomas Fagg opened the scoring for the Nuts and Bolts on six minutes, but the Rams were level eight minutes later Ben Fitchett with the equaliser. They weren’t level for long, however, Gary Lockyer putting the hosts ahead from the spot on twenty-six minutes, and the same player made it three-one just before the break.

Five hundred and sixty watched on, and the visiting contingent would have been just about waving their play-off hopes goodbye when Mamadou Diallo made it four-one just after the hour, although Karn Miller-Neave got one back just before the end. The Nuts and Bolts have guaranteed a home play-off semi-final, and likely a home play-off final should they reach it, whilst the Rams are five points behind

Herne Bay with two matches remaining.

Cray Valley PM took a blow as Burgess Hill Town went ahead on the stroke of half time due to an own goal, and that turned out to be the only goal of the game, the Millers slipping to fourth.

Haywards Heath Town hoped to underline their play off credentials as they welcomed Corinthian, but the game ended goalless, aided by a missed penalty for the hosts. They did climb to third, nonetheless.

Hythe Town and Sevenoaks Town delivered a goalless first half, but we had a goal soon after the restart, Bradley Wilson firing Oaks ahead on the hour. That turned out to be that, and it guarantees the Oaks safety - a phenomenal job done by Harry Hudson since his arrival. The Cannons have a five point cushion and should probably be ok.

Phoenix Sports surely had to win to have any chance of avoiding the drop, and they went ahead just before the break, Alfie Evans breaching the Lancing rearguard. The Lancers also needed the points, but they left with none, and no goals, slipping to second bottom, Sports going above them.

Whitstable Town’s survival hopes took a massive blow as Faversham Town left Belmont with the points. The only goal of the game arrived nineteen minutes from time, and it went to Emmanuel Oluwasemo for the Lilywhites. Harry Goodger was sent off late on for the Oysters.

Finally, Phoenix Sports and Hythe Town couldn’t manage a goal, a point which leaves Sports five points from safety and the Cannons two points above the relegation play-off place.

Bay secure play-off place

Herne Bay not only secured their play-off place but climbed to third with a two-nil win over Hythe Town. Rory Smith opened the scoring on the half hour, Zak Ansah doubled the lead half an hour later, and results elsewhere mean that not only do Bay confirm their top five spot but step into a position which would give them home advantage in the play- offs!

Cray Valley PM drop to fifth, after twice coming back to level and take a point at VCD Athletic. Jason Williams scored both goals for the Vickers, on nine and fifty-six minutes, but on neither occasion could his side capitalise, the Millers seeing Denzel Gayle and Anthony Edgar grab equalisers.

Ramsgate knew that they had to get back to winning ways to have any chance of the final playoff place, and they did their bit, but it was not to be. The Rams hammered Whitstable Town six-one, Ashley Miller with three, Ben Fitchett with two, and Callum Peck with the other one, the Rams coming from behind after George McIlroy gave the Oysters an early lead. Whitstable still have a mathematical chance of making third bottom and a possible play off place, but you’d probably need a degree in mathematics to make those maths work.

Lancing and Phoenix Sports are more likely to either end up with a relegation play off or a reprieve. The Lancers are second bottom after losing, perhaps unsurprisingly, to champions Hastings United- ben Pope and James Hull with the first half goals; Sports ahead on goal difference after losing two-nil at Corinthian, an Emmanuel Oloyede double doing the damage.

East Grinstead Town are safe after a three-one win over Three Bridges in an A264 derby. The Wasps struck first and second, Ben Aubrey in the first half and Kie Douglas after ten minutes of the second, and although Brannon O’Neill got one back for Bridges, Daniel Uchechi made sure with a third, nine minutes from time.

Ashford United already have that home advantage done and dusted, which is why they perhaps went off the boil at Faversham Town yesterday. Luke Burden gave them a lead just before the break, but after it Ethan Smith and a double from Marcus Elliott saw the Lilywhites continue their recent impressive run.

Haywards Heath Town and Whitehawk didn’t manage a goal between them at the Enclosed Ground. That draw saw Heath slip to fourth on goal difference, whilst that point will keep the Hawks out of the relegation mix unless there’s a rather improbably goal difference turnaround on Saturday.

Sevenoaks Town continued their magnificent form by hammering Sittingbourne four-nil. It was threenil by the break, Omari Hibbert with two and Yahaya Bamba the other, and Freddie Parker added a fourth midway through the second half.

Finally, Burgess Hill Town and Chichester City shared four goals at the More Than Tyres stadium. Max Miller and Lewis Finney twice put the hosts ahead, Ethan Prichard and a late Ben Mendoza equaliser earned a point for Chi.

EDITOR’S

THANKS...

Well it’s the last league match of the 2021/22 season for the Pitching In Isthmian League South East CHAMPIONS!

Producing 22 regular matchday programmes along with Sam Adams Testimonial Souvenir issue as well as preparing 5 others for potential FA Cup replays, often with tight timescales, has only been achieved with the help and support of a number of people and I would like to place on record my appreciation for their valued contributions.

Thanks go to, in no particular order, Billy Wood, Dane Martin and Gary Elphick. To Daren Burney and Dave Ormerod for Sam’s special editions. Simon Stoddart for providing a humorous and always interesting take on the semi-pro game under his ‘Gut Feeling’ column. I’m already looking forward to read his thoughts as we take the step up the FA pyramid system! Thanks also to Chris Laverick and Adam ‘Radio’ Carder for their HUISC’s contributions. To Scott White for his superb galleries of matchday action photographs to select from.

Special thanks goes once again to Hayley Clout for the brilliant support she has given me throughout the season, as an important communication link and for her hard work coordinating material and logos for sponsors adverts and features, mascot details and club activities, often under print deadline pressure - all very much appreciated Hayley.

Thanks also to the opposing teams and Isthmian League contributors for their club and league content.

A special note of appreciation goes to Jim Warren and his team at Scantech Group Printers for their excellent print reproduction of the matchday programme.

Finally, a thank you to all those who have purchased a programme from Phil and Barbara (thanks for selling them guys!) during this eventful and ultimately very successful CHAMPIONS season. I hope you enjoyed the content.

Onwards and upwards to the Isthmian Premier ... and beyond! ... COYU’s.

Have a great summer everyone. Prem here we come! ...
