Club President Good evening supporters. A very warm welcome to the TGS Pilot Field for this well-deserved testimonial match for our long-serving player Sam Adams. We welcome as our opponents tonight a Tottenham under-23 side and trust they will enjoy their evening down in Sussex with us. Sam first signed for the club as an 18-yearold in 2005 and in his first season proved what a talent as a goalscorer he would be by becoming the club’s top scorer with 15 goals. On the odd occasion Sam has also stood in as an emergency goalkeeper. Except for a brief spell at Hythe Town in season 2016-17 Sam has been a real loyal servant of the club for a considerable time.
Dave Ormerod pays tribute On 17th November 2018 Sam made his 500th appearance for the club and I was honoured to mark that occasion along with the Manager Chris Agutter, by making a presentation to Sam. I trust you will enjoy tonight’s match and I hope you will all return when we start our league fixtures for season 2021-22 on Saturday, 14th August, when we entertain Herne Bay.
Have a great night Sam!

A tribute from Club Co-Owner
Daren Burney Welcome to the TGS Pilot Field tonight for
what should be a truly memorable game to mark what has become a rarity in the modern game - a testimonial. A celebration befitting of our very own Sam Adams, Club captain, and soon to become the Club’s record appearance holder. Like me, Sam has an affinity to Tottenham Hotspur, and when we asked Sam who he would like to see come to Hastings for his Testimonial this was the fixture he chose. I made contact with Spurs and to our delight Tottenham agreed to send their Development Squad for the game to provide a tough test for our team tonight, but importantly a fixture to bring the crowds in to honour our inspirational leader on the pitch. When Peter Sherlock and myself joined David Ormorod in acquiring the majority shareholding in HUFC sometime back in April 2015, I recall realising at the time just how important Sam Adams was for the team. He was always there at the centre of
the action, driving on the team, scoring some great and important goals, and such a good steward of the Club. This has continued unchanged throughout the time that Sam’s been at the Club during our ownership, and I personally hope Sam remains involved at the Club for many years to come. Sam was part of the HUFC team that celebrated promotion in 2007 and I hope come April next year, Sam will be able to lift the League Trophy to finish what should be a memorable season for him and the Club. He has been denied this opportunity for the past two seasons for reasons beyond our control so lets get behind him and The Team and make this happen! Sam, tonight you will be joined by your family, friends, and all the HUFC family. You have made us all proud, so enjoy YOUR night!
Daren Burney HUFC Non Exec Director
From the dugout
Good evening everyone. A warm welcome to the Spurs U23s management team, officials and players to the TGS Pilot Field. I think one of the best ways to emphasise how important Sam Adams is for me, as a manager, and the team as a whole, is that in my first training session after being made interim manager, I gave him the Captains armband. A leader of men, on and off the pitch, whose nature and personality alone sets a fantastic standard for everyone at this Football Club. Always one of the first in and usually the last one out, Sammy’s commitment to the cause is infectious and unwavering. A scorer of all different types of goals, frequent assister of team-mates, relentless worker and so intelligent. Sammy is simply one of the best players I have, and I’m sure will ever, work with. Add to this what a great man he is, makes this occasion perfectly fitting. THANK YOU, SUPER SAMMY ADAMS, AND ENJOY YOUR SPECIAL NIGHT!

Good evening everyone. Welcome back to the TGS Pilot Field on what feels like a lifetime, but what a game to be back for. I would like to start my notes by saying congratulations to Sam on his amazing football career here at HUFC. What an achievement and one of the nicest people I have met in my 20 years of being involved in football. I hope Sam, his family and friends, all have a great evening with us on what is a very special occasion. A warm welcome and thanks to our Match Sponsor for tonight's game, Fantasy League, who created the UK’s first fantasy football game in 1991, a year before the launch of the Premier League. Based around an auction format, a group of friends forms a league and bids against each other to create their own unique squads. It became a massive success with Radio5, with the Daily Telegraph becoming involved.

Hayley Clout Speaks out! Finally, I welcome our two Match Mascots to tonight's game, Wilfie and Mason, who are friends and also sons of Sam and Kenny. We hope they have a great time and thoroughly enjoy the whole experience. Enjoy the game.

Gut Feeling Simon Stoddart My waffle and opinions, I don't speak for Hastings United. Personal observations on the world of semi-pro football and sport in general.
HERE WE GO AGAIN Evening all. It's great to be back at the Pilot Field as a truly weird period in history starts to hopefully see normality return. The new campaign is almost upon us, Herne Bay will be here on August 14th giving the U's a tough start to 2021-22 after two totally disrupted seasons. Not as if football hasn't been in the headlines this last few weeks with England getting as close as they ever will to winning a major competition. Jeeeeeez, I'm ancient enough to remember watching the 66 World Cup Final on my school mate's black and white telly in East Grinstead. 55 long years. Is it time for a change running the national side? I'd love to see Frank Lampard and Stuart Pearce take over. What was extra good about the recent football was seeing fans allowed in again. Something we all take for granted – people! Months of football, rugby and cricket played in empty stadiums with canned sounds, horrendous. Rugby started letting people back in, as did football and the cricket season started at the perfect time. Seeing spectators at the excellent one day games against Pakistan was tremendous.
But things are by no means back to normal. The Tokyo Olympics – and I'm ancient enough to remember watching the 64 Games on telly in Tokyo where we lived at the time – are a year late and being staged in largely empty venues. The Lions rugby tour of South Africa, all three Test matches played at an empty Cape Town stadium. What can it be like for players stepping out onto a pitch in a fan devoid stadium? Pretty self evident that one, once people started being allowed back in, players were saying how good it was having an audience again. Looks like I'll be England based for a while yet. Plans to semi emigrate/retire to The Philippines are very much on hold. Haven't seen my little lady since February last year, borders closed the following month and while there is talk of admitting fully vaccinated people, it is no more than that. So, the rather novel compilation of Gut Feeling on my phone 8000 miles away in one of several favourite watering holes will also be on hold. I recall following United's FA Trophy replay at Whitehawk from just such a place with a 3.45 am kick off (7/8 hour time difference depending what time of year) and getting back to the hotel around 6. Slightly fuzzy headed but so what!
Semi-pro football summed up for me. Orrible wet afternoon up at Hitchin in the FA Cup.
Tottenham were here in January 1993. Not the best pic but check out the pitch and compare that with what Simon Rudkins & Co offer us these days.
SAM Well, that's what this evening is all about. Sam Adams should hopefully chalk up 600 games for United this season. And the club have got special opposition in to mark the event, a Tottenham u23 side. Not the first time they've been here, January 1993 saw a Spurs team here with several first teamers featuring. 1100 spectators saw Hastings Town, as we then were, give a decent account of themselves as they went down 4-2. One of Town's goals, a Terry White free kick. Terry and Sam between them must have accumulated close on 1200 games for Town and United. Sam, for many of us I'm sure, summed it all up
in a truly remarkable individual and team performance up in Suffolk nearly 3 years ago. Leiston away in the FA Cup, Leiston a step higher in the Southern League's Central Division. United had three players sent off in a bizzare 2nd half with Sam, who'd already put in a shift with two goals, then (and not for the first time) donning the goal-keeping jersey, with Charlie Horlock one of the 3 sent off. And in what was surely the FA Cup performance of the season, United with Sam in goal, held out for a 4-3 win. This bloke gives real meaning to the expression “Ever present” - and so the show goes on. Well played Sam. This evening is all about you.
Where does time go? September 22nd, 2018 - Leiston away in the FA Cup with Sam Adams getting one of his two goals from the penalty spot.

Hastings United Football Club pulled off an incredible victory over higher grade opposition despite having three players sent-off and finishing the match with an outfield player, Captain Sam Adams, in goal. Bostik League South East Division club Hastings won 4-3 in a drama-filled Emirates FA Cup second round qualifying tie away to Evo-Stik League South Premier Central side Leiston.
Sam rises well above the Leiston striker ...
The young Hastings team produced a truly tremendous battling performance to earn £9,000 from the FA’s prize fund (on top of the £8,890 the club had won in the previous two rounds) and a place in the third round qualifying draw. On a fine playing surface in Suffolk, Hastings got off to a flying start as Daniel Ajakaiye gave the ‘U’s a fifth minute lead following a corner - his 15th goal for the season to date. Leiston equalised nine minutes later though, when Joe Jefford struck from a corner of their own and went 2-1 up five minutes after that through Matt Blake.

It was 2-2 at half-time after Sam Adams got Hastings back on terms with a great strike in the 30th minute. The tie seemed to be swinging very much Hastings’ way as the visitors struck in the 52nd and 55th minutes to lead 4-2. Kelvin Ogboe put Hastings ahead and shortly afterwards Adams gave the visitors a two-goal cushion by converting a penalty for his second of the afternoon. However, barely two minutes later, the versatile Adams was donning the goalkeeper’s gloves after Charlie Horlock was sent-off for what the referee deemed deliberate handball outside the area. Leiston pulled one back in the 68th minute via Blake’s second of the match and eight minutes later Hastings were reduced to nine men as Sam Cruttwell was shown his second yellow card. Hastings were then forced to survive six minutes of added time, during which Jamie Fielding was also given a second yellow card, but the eight men on the pitch at the end somehow held out for a memorable victory.

Born: 11th December 1986 For Sam’s 500th senior appearance for Hastings United Football Club, in 2018, we asked him a few questions ... worth a reminder, on his testimonial night, of some of those answers ... When growing up as a schoolboy who were your football heroes?
Paul Scholes & Stevie Gerrard Who in football has influenced/helped your playing career the most? As a Youth … manager/coach?
Paul Chandler & Robin Gunn As a Senior … manager/coach?
All have played their part but this year and back end of last year has been the most enjoyable so I’d have to say Aggy! Match details of first appearance for HUFC?

I think my first goal was in the FA Cup at home vs Tonbridge Angels Most memorable/important HUFC match?
Winning the play-offs Most memorable/important goal you have scored for HUFC?

Hastings Sam, played for the Hastings Youth team and also spent time with Rye and Iden United FC before signing at the Pilot Field in 2005. He was part of the squad that sealed promotion in 2007, and although he has had spells at Rye United and Hythe Town, he has been a mainstay of the United first XI ever since. Sam has made 569 appearances for the Club and would have passed 600 by now, but for two unfinished seasons. He was one of the first players to commit to Chris Agutter’s squad for the 2021-22 season.

Sam’s 500th Watched by 512 on 17th November 2018 Sam Adams’ 500th appearance for Hastings United Football Club ended in a victory. The Hastings captain led his team to a 3-1 win at home to Whitstable Town which strengthened Hastings’ hold on second place in the Bostik League South East Division. Adams came out on to the pitch with his three children, and presentations were made to him by club president Dave Ormerod, manager Chris Agutter and photographer Scott White just before kick-off. Once the game got underway, goals from Youssouf Bamba, Sam Beale and Daniel Ajakaiye gave Hastings a seventh home league win out of seven this season. Hastings enjoyed a lot of the ball and played some good football during the first half, but they had to wait until the 44th minute before opening the scoring. Bamba did brilliantly to control a deep cross from the right by Ajakaiye and step inside Whitstable defender Stuart West before driving a low shot past goalkeeper Dan Eason for his fifth goal in six games. Ajakaiye had failed to convert two good chances prior to that. He firstly came from nowhere to dispossess Tom Bryant and was in on goal only to shoot just wide. Shortly afterwards he missed the target when it
seemed easier to score after Eason was unable to hold Jack Dixon’s sweetly-struck shot from the edge of the area. Bamba caused plenty of problems on the home left and on one occasion he skinned West before seeing his cut-back poked just wide of his own post by Whitstable player John Walker. Dixon was stroking the ball around beautifully in the Hastings midfield and his sublime defence-splitting pass led to Hastings’ second goal in the 49th minute. Beale made a great run from leftback to get on the end of it before coolly rolling the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season. Whitstable pulled one back with their first noteworthy attempt of the game just two minutes later. A free kick from the away left dropped to Bryant, who drove the ball home left-footed from inside the six-yard box. The visitors seemed to grow in confidence after the goal and all of a sudden things weren’t so comfortable for Hastings, particularly from the fine set-piece deliveries of Harry Brown. Kyran Connolly played a splendid ball through to fellow substitute Elliott Hartnell-Baker, whose shot was parried by Hastings goalkeeper Charlie Horlock and gathered at the second attempt.
Seconds later at the other end, Bamba’s angled shot was pushed out by Eason. Adams then had an opportunity to mark his big day with a goal only to blaze over from 15 yards after a Lanre Azeez shot deflected out to him. Hastings were grateful to Beale for clearing Stephen Smith’s header off the line after Brown’s deep free kick from the Whitstable right was nodded back across goal. Brown then struck a low shot which went whiskers wide of the post and Charlie Smith fired just over from outside the box as Whitstable enjoyed their best spell of a bright but chilly afternoon. Hastings swiftly killed the game off with their third goal in the 77th minute. Ajakaiye intercepted an under-hit back pass from Bryant and
rounded Eason before rolling home his 22nd goal of the campaign. Hastings, who gave a first team debut to academy product Charlie Curran as a late substitute, were comfortable thereafter. The vast majority of their second biggest home crowd of the season hoped that Adams could crown his 500th game by dispatching an added time free kick into the top corner, but instead his effort cleared the crossbar. Edited match report from an original by Simon Newstead posted to HUFC Website. Coincidentally tonight’s referee is Isaac Searle.
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club The Game Is About Glory. The words of our 1961 Double-winning captain Danny Blanchflower reverberate around Tottenham Hotspur and everything we do, to this day and into the future. We are about playing with flair, style and passion. Players, coaches, staff and fans – we move forward, together as one. We’re so proud of our rich history. From humble beginnings in North London, we became the first and, to date, only non-league side to win the FA Cup in 1901 – the first of eight triumphs in the age-old, worldrenowned competition thus far. In 1951, we won the English First Division league title for the first time, just 12 months after coming up from the Second Division as champions. And 10 years later, we reached even greater heights, becoming the first team in the modern era to complete the league and FA Cup double. Bill Nicholson was our manager then, but he was so much more than just a manager. He was Mr Tottenham. A former player of ours, he lived and breathed Tottenham Hotspur, guiding us to huge success in his 16 years at the helm. Under his stewardship, we became the first British team to win a major European trophy with European Cup Winners’ Cup glory in 1963, collected further FA Cups in 1962 and 1967, won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and tasted European success once more by lifting the 1972 UEFA Cup. Further FA Cup, UEFA Cup and League Cup trophies followed throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, leading us to up to the present day where we strive to innovate and amaze in pursuit of more silverware. We’re hungry, we’re progressive, we’ve built a brand new world-class Training Centre and moved into an outstanding, modern new stadium, overlapping the site of White Hart Lane, where we played our home games for 118 years. In his spare time Sam likes Carp fishing. His favourite music is Old Skool Garage. Of course Sam loves his football and is a mad keen Spurs fan. ... and he loves his Mum’s Roast Pork! Thanks to Sam’s wife Kay for providing the family snapshots.
We here at the H.U.I.S.C are ever so grateful for the distinct honour of being in a Souvenir Programme Issue for this special event. Sam Adams has not only played over 568 games for the mighty U's (a massive achievement in itself) but to us fans represents all that is good about the game and our Club. Not only a consistent TOP player and leader, but a first class human being.

Please note that the following are offences under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, as amended: the throwing of any object within the ground without lawful authority or excuse, the chanting of anything of an indecent or racist nature: the entry onto the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority or excuse. Under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985, the following are offences for which a person can be arrested by a police officer: attempting to enter the ground or being inside the ground whilst drunk: being in possession of any intoxicating liquor, or bottle, can or other portable container which could cause damage or personal injury when entering the ground.
ISTHMIAN LEAGUE RESPECT STATEMENT “The Isthmian Football League strongly supports the FA statement that there should be a zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any form of discriminatory abuse whether it by reason of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion and belief, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex and sexual orientation or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association for action by that Association.”
These include our policy on ticket and pricing, abandoned matches and our involvement in the Hastings Community.
The Club Believes Customer care starts on the inside, with a good team of staff and work ethic. Most of our staff are volunteers but the Club expect our staff to always do their best. Our staff should remain courteous even in difficult situations. The Club and its staff know they are offering a service and that they would like every customer to return. We believe that people come first when offering a service. We expect our staff to be friendly and helpful and to know their job or be able to call upon someone who is able to respond to the needs of our customers. We expect our staff to give their full attention to a customer in any situation that arises.
In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers.
(The FA 0800 085 0508 / Kick it Out 020 7253 0162 )
We expect our staff and volunteers to treat every customer as they would like to be treated themselves.
The Isthmian League and all Member Clubs in the League are committed to promoting equality by treating people fairly and with respect, by recognising that inequalities may exist, by taking steps to address them and providing access and opportunities for all members of the community.”
We in return expect our customers to treat our volunteers and staff with respect and the Club will not tolerate any physical or verbal abused aimed at them.
