WELCOME
MATCH REPORTS ... The Club has received some questions from supporters on why there has been no match reports on the website this season to date as has occurred in previous seasons. On the recent departure of the very hard-working, and much valued to local sport, reporter Simon Newstead from the Hastings Observer, the Club has become aware that Simon will not be replaced and there will be no locally based sports reporter. if the Club wish for any news, including match reports, to be published then such need to be submitted to a central point which the Club is aware is not Hastings area based. Previously the Club was delighted to take much of the content of Simon's excellent match reports for its own match report publication purposes. The above is obviously disappointing but is a sign of the times. The Argus for instance, which was always good for non-league football news, now only seems to publish a small number of articles on clubs that appear no lower in the national league system than BetVictor Isthmian Premier. The Club is pleased to advise that it has made arrangements for match reports to be prepared for placement on the website, as it has done so in the past. These match reports will also being forwarded to the Hastings Observer for publication.
Welcome to the Pilot Field for today’s exciting FA Cup Preliminary Round encounter against Broadbridge Heath FC. We extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of today’s visitors. We hope they enjoy their brief visit to Hastings, albeit it brings them to the end of their FA Cup journey, and wish them a safe trip home. A similar warm welcome is extended to today’s three match officials, Referee Aaron Conn and his two Assistants, Keith Wenham and Mohammed Uddin. We return to Pilot Field action this afternoon looking to build on the 0-0 away draw at league newcomers, Cray Valley PM last Saturday and Tuesday evening’s 2-0 Pilot Field win over Faversham Town, where Ben Pope got his goal tally started scoring both goals. Joe Knight’s excellent video highlights including the goals and post match interview with Aggy can be watched via links on the Club’s social media accounts. Today’s visitors beat Punjab United 1-0 in the Extra Preliminary Round, a match screened live by the BBC. ‘The Bears’ currently sit at 13th position in the Premier Division of the Southern Combination Football League table with 5 points from 4 matches. The league is one tier below ours in the semi-pro pyramid. However, their squad contains some very talented footballers, most notably striker, Jamie Taylor, who has an impressive goalscoring record right up to the top level of the semi-pro game. For today though, both teams put their early season regular league accomplishments to one side, to battle out for a place in the next round of this money-spinning, and as we know, often very magical, FA Challenge Cup. I’m sure today’s encounter will provide a real challenge. Our boys will need to be on top of their game for us to progress in this great football competition. Hastings United Independent Supporters Club is an all new club based on the old supporters’ group, but working in a new way alongside Hastings United Football Club. It is also affiliated to the Football Supporters’ Association. HILLIANS SIGN PALACE DEFENDER ONE IN, ONE OUT Young Eagles skipper heads to Burgess Hill.

Burgess Hill Town have announced the signing of former Crystal Palace defender Drew Matthews. Matthews has recently been released by the Premier League side, but is very highly thought of and his signing is something of a coup for Simon Wormull.
PALMER HEADS TO THE HILL Former Hythe Town midfielder is now a Hillian. Burgess Hill Town announced the signing of former Hythe Town midfielder Ryan Palmer which rather caught us on the hop as it seems only five minutes since we were announcing his arrival at Merstham. Palmer has been at Reachfields for two seasons, and hadn't played a competitive match for the Moatsiders. In the last campaign he made twenty-seven appearances as the Cannons finished in seventh place, and he made thirtyfive appearances and scored five goals as the club missed out on the play-offs on goal difference in 2017/18. He previously played for Tooting & Mitcham United.
ANOTHER RAM HEADS TO THE BELMONT This time it's Jadama drama! Ramsgate have confirmed that midfielder Tijan Jadama has joined Whitstable Town. The Oysterboys, announced the signing of Rams striker Aaron Millbank, now add another former Ram to their squad, Jadama having made thirty appearances last year and twenty-two the season before, after making his Rams debut in 2016-17.

Keeper out, midfielder in. There were two transfer announcements from Ramsgate recently, one concerning a departure, the other an arrival. The first news was that goalkeeper Luke Watkins has moved the distance of a marathon (that's the running race, not the old chocolate bar packed with peanuts), heading 26.2 miles along the road to Faversham Town. Luke was an ever-present for the Rams last season, making forty-six appearances, and indeed has been a virtual ever-present as the last line of their defence for a number of years. Inbound is Kingstonian midfielder Aaron Lamont. Aaron was one of the few players who started the last campaign with the K's and was still there at the end, making 41 appearances under a succession of managers, and scoring two goals. The player started life at Queens Park Rangers, and he has also turned out for Truro City, Hampton & Richmond Borough. A little more than two months ago he was unveiled as a new signing by Braintree Town, so this move appears to be something of a coup for the Rams, as they look towards a promotion push.

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.
FAVERSHAM That was a good, sound performance on Tuesday evening in front of a very respectable attendance of 428. Seeing your new 9 get off the mark straight away is never a bad thing and hopefully, a combination of Lanre and Daniel down either flank with Ben and Ken waiting for crosses and cut backs will see plenty of goals. Some interesting results eh? Burgess Hill have certainly made an inconsistent return to Isthmian SE football with a 7-2 win over promotion favourites Hythe followed by a central Sussex derby hammering at Haywards Heath where they lost 1-5. Just a few miles apart these two clubs – and reflected in a very respectable gate of 407. Guernsey have started off with two mainland games for some reason – and having drawn 3-3 at Faversham a week ago, they went and did it all again at East Grinstead on Tuesday night. Ashford's game with Ramsgate was postponed because of floodlight problems apparently. The newly promoted sides had a mixed night on Tuesday, Chichester losing 2-3 at home to Whyteleafe while Cray Valley went to Sittingbourne and won 3-1.
LUCRATIVE DISTRACTION The FA Cup is with us in it's early early stages. I don't know, does it do anything for me? Speaking for myself – three points at stake is what it's all about, especially when, as we've been trying to do for several seasons, it's all about getting promotion. Already I'm feeling intense jealousy seeing Cray and Horsham adjusting to life in the BetVictor Premier, just like last season watching Lewes and Carshalton and prior to that, Tooting & Mitcham and Dorking Wanderers doing the same.
Intensely, so when it comes to Dorking who are now in National South playing sides that were regular Southern Premier visitors here 20 plus years ago. Even more so when I think back to United being four minutes away from beating Dorking in a memorable play-off semi-final at their place. But like it says, it's a lucrative distraction and both clubs will be pleased with any financial benefits they make from their FA Cup involvement. Whoever comes second today will get £960 and the winner makes £2890. Indeed Broadbridge Heath did nicely from their extra preliminary round win to the tune of £2250. This is how the prize money is divided for the next few rounds (loser loot in brackets) - 1st qualifier £4500 (1500), 2nd qualifier £6750 (2250), 3rd qualifier £11250 (3750) and if either of us win it, we get £3,600,000. But while acknowledging the financial side is always a winner in the semi-pro game, it does distract you from the ultimate prize as you find yourself in arrears with your league games. South Park several years ago, they had a great run in the FA Trophy before going out at Tranmere Rovers. What with that and other reasons they ended up with as many as ten games in hand and if they'd done well making up those arrears they'd have made the play offs. But it wasn't to be. Guernsey managed a huge backlog of games in 2012/13 to win the Combined Counties League but generally speaking when you have to play a game every three days for a month, you're asking too much even of the most dedicated players. As we we were to find out to our cost in the big FA Cup year when the heights of a 3rd round visit to The Riverside contrasted with the lows of relegation at the end of that season as the backlog of league games – that bread and butter again – proved too much. And having shown indifference to the competition – two games that excelled last season – the league win here against Cray Wanderers and AND that epic FA Cup tie at Southern Premier Central Leiston up in Suffolk where our 8 men held out to win 4-3. Whatever, I can't be here today, once again work interferes. The shift pattern (12 hours) knobbles three or four consecutive Saturdays so it's Twitter and Footballwebpages for me!

Use VAR to wipe this blight out from football. "The beautiful game" ....... REALLY?
This was special, the band behind the goal in the first game of the Ashford double-header back in April.
VAR Hmmmm. It's certainly causing a stir isn't it? But never mind. Football is the richest sport of all and has been the last to start using video technology to ensure correct decisions are made. Sep Blatter's ludicrous placement of additional officials behind goals in Champions League games was the only concession from FIFA that something needed to be done. Ludicrous it was too given that everything was already in place with cameras covering all angles and games dissected in minute detail throughout by the commentators and pundits. Dissected by everyone under the sun except the people running the games! People will get used to it just like they did watching cricket and rugby where television match officials, Hawk eye etc etc have been in use for years. And hopefully that same technology which has already illustrated some horrendous play-acting in the recent Fulham Huddersfield game will be used to finally clamp down on the face/shin clutching, multi-rolling play-acting that still blights the game.

Where it starts to get mind numbing is how the FA intends to create the final

BROADBRIDGE HEATH FC BRIEF HISTORY Broadbridge Heath Football Club was founded in 1919 by local ex-members of the armed forces who had just returned from the 1914-18 Great War. In the very first season of competitive football, with only 12 registered players, the club won the Horsham and District Championship and Challenge Cup. In 1970-71 the Horsham League amalgamated with the West Sussex Football League and Heath joined Division Three. Promotion was won to Division Two the following season. In 1978-79 following promotion from the Premier Division of the WSFL, Broadbridge Heath joined the Southern Counties Combination League which at that time was a feeder to the Sussex County Football League. The SCCL amalgamated with the County League in 1983-84 with Broadbridge Heath becoming founder members of the new Division Three. The club moved to its current facilities at the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in Wickhurst Lane in 1987 where they had exclusive use of the stadium pitch, bar and social area. At the end of the 1987-88 season the club were promoted to senior football in Division 2 for the very first time. Heath remained in senior football for 20 years, with one season (1998-99) in Division One. Despite succeeding on the pitch off the field events deteriorated when the club’s landlord decided not to renew the club’s lease to run the bar and social area and for several years with no home and no assets, the club struggled to survive.

At the end of the 2007-08 season Heath were relegated to Division 3, things got even worse for the club when the team finished second from bottom 2 years later and only avoided demotion because there were not enough clubs in the feeder leagues with facilities to satisfy County League requirements. The appointment of Steve Painter as First Team Manager saw an improvement in the club’s fortunes. In his first full season as manager 2010-11 the team finished in sixth position and a year later they finished one place higher behind some very good intermediate sides. As a result of restructuring in the leagues above and despite finishing fifth, Broadbridge Heath were promoted back to Division 2 at the end of the 2011-12 season. Back in Division 2 after a 5 year break the team finished in 6th position and reached the final of the SCFA RUR Cup where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Division One runners-up East Preston. A year later Painter's team went even better by finishing the season as runners-up to Eastbourne United AFC and with that promotion back to Division One for only the second time in the clubs history. In the first two seasons back in Division One (now the Premier Division) the club finished 9th and a year later went even better finishing 8th. In 2017-2018 a slight dip saw the team finish in 15th position but they bounced back a year later to end in 6th place our highest ever finish. Off the field the club have taken possession of their new purposebuilt facilities ensuring the future of the club for many years to come.

Finally after almost 100 years, Broadbridge Heath Football Club have a home!
It's been a long, long journey for their members since the club began on the 10th October 1919, playing at Sleets Corner behind the Shelley Arms where they stayed until moving to the Army Camp in 1970. After temporary accommodation at Pixies Hollow in Horsham ‘The Bears’ had hoped that a move to the new Sports Centre in Wickurst Lane in the early 1980's would secure the clubs future forever but things didn't work out as hoped and in 1998 the bar and social area they ran in the Centre were outsourced and the club was left with no immediate source of income, no headquarters, but with the understanding that there would be major development within the village and the Council might well be able to relocate the club away from the Leisure Centre in facilities of its own. 21 years later Broadbridge Heath Football Club got the keys to their new home! Born in Crawley, West Sussex, Taylor played for Broadbridge Heath, scoring 17 times during the 2000–01 season, before moving to Horsham at the start of the 2001–02 season. He joined AFC Wimbledon in March 2004, helping them gain promotion to the Isthmian First Division, before returning to Horsham in October the same year.
In the 2006, Taylor joined Woking and in March 2007 he joined Dagenham & Redbridge. With Dagenham promoted to the football league at the end of the season, Taylor made his league debut on 18 August 2007 as a second-half substitute for Chris Moore in the 2–2 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers. On 22 February 2008, Taylor joined Grays Athletic on loan for a month, which was later extended until the end of the 2007–08 season. Taylor scored nine goals in 16 appearances for the Blues, finishing as second top goal scorer to Danny Kedwell. Following his impressive loan spell at Grays Athletic, he was offered a two-year contract at the start of the 2008–09 season. Taylor signed for fellow Conference National outfit Eastbourne Borough on 10 July 2009. He was voted the Supporters & Players' Player of the Year for the 2010–11 season. However, he turned down a new deal with the club following their drop in division. Taylor signed for Lincoln City on a two-year deal on 1 July 2011. After an injury hit first season, Taylor helped the Imps survive in the Conference Premier in a difficult 2012–13 season, finishing as top scorer. RAMS STRIKER REUNITES WITH HIS FORMER MANAGER
That's three. Haywards Heath Town announced the arrival of former Brighton & Hove Albion full-back Hamish Morrison. Hamish, a former Scotland Under 17 international who was born in Sussex but whose family hail from faraway Stornoway in the Hebrides (geography tip - head almost as far north as you can, fall off the end and keep going), has most recently been turning out for the fabulously-named Hamilton Academical FC, joining them in July of last year - but now he's back in his home county. Hamish joins two further recruits announced recently, former Dorking Wanderers man Tom Summerfield, who you may recall also spent time with South Park last season, and midfielder Jack Hartley, who made three appearances for Horsham - including a Velocity Trophy victory over his new side - last season.
ANOTHER SIGNING FOR BAY Wasps midfielder makes the move to the Kent coast. Herne Bay have announced the signing of East Grinstead Town midfielder Jordan JohnsonPalmer. Jordan made twenty-five appearances for the Wasps last season, mainly in the number four shirt and including one against his new employers, a one-one draw back in March. He moved to Sussex after spending 2017/18 turning out for Bay's neighbours Hythe Town, and also previously played for Metropolitan Police and Molesey.
Millbank is an Oysterboy Former Ramsgate striker Aaron Millbank has been announced as a new signing for fellow BetVictor South East side Whitstable Town. Millbank, who came through the youth ranks at Gillingham but has played the vast majority of his football for the Rams, made twenty-seven appearances last season, scoring seven times. His former Rams boss, Lloyd Blackman, is of course now in charge at Whitstable, and is pleased with his new acquisition. Speaking to the club website, he stated: “I’m delighted to have the signature of Aaron Milbank for the coming season. I’ve been speaking to Aaron throughout the summer as he’s been travelling with his girlfriend and we’ve kept in constant communication. He’s a player I know very well and his qualities are there for all to see, as seen on recently with his performance less than 48 hours after arriving back in the country." That match saw Millbank hit a seventeen minute hat trick, but he couldn't stop his new side falling to a thrilling six-four defeat at home to Margate.

SAM BEALE HAS RETURNED! Fans’ favourite and Isthmian League South East Division supporters’ ‘Team of the Year’ member Sam Beale has returned to the Club. Despite Sam’s desire to play abroad he unfortunately was unable to find a club of a suitable level, so as promised, he returns to the ‘U’s for the 2019-20 campaign. ‘U’s Assistant Manager Andrew Brown commented, ‘Make no bones about it we have missed Sam in pre-season so to get him back at the Pilot Field is a very satisfying piece of business.’ Brown added, ‘We are keen to have a smaller tight-knit squad this season, so with Sam’s re-arrival it means disappointment for another player, Aaron Condon. For whatever reason it hasn’t quite clicked for Aaron and we didn’t see enough from him pre-season to justify his replacing Sam Beale in our squad.’ Brown finished, ‘It’s all happened in the past few days so we’ve kept everyone at the Club on and off the pitch on their toes with this one as far as registrations etc. go....either way we wish Aaron all the best and welcome Bealey back with open arms.'

ON THIS DAY A look back at some of the matches played in past seasons on: Saturday, 24th August.
1963 It was the opening day of the season and the goals flowed: In Division One five goals scored three including the 3-3 draw between Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester United while Everton beat Fulham 3-0 and it was 3-1 as Wolves won at Arsenal and Ipswich Town defeated Burnley. In Division Two Southampton beat Charlton Athletic 6-1 while Middlesbrough defeated Plymouth 5-0 and Bury saw off Rotherham 4-2. It was a similar scenario in Division Three where results included Coventry City beating Crystal Palace 5-1 and Peterborough defeating Wrexham 5-2. Aldershot had the best result in Division Four beating Hartlepool United 4-1 while there as a 3-3 draw as Carlisle were held by Darlington; Workington beat Brighton by the odd goal of three at the Goldstone Ground.
We, then still Hastings & St. Leonards, did not start our fixtures in Division Two of the Sussex County League until the third Saturday in September. The original Hastings United travelled to Hereford United where they drew 1-1 in the Premier Division of the Southern League.
1991 Manchester City went above rivals United when they defeated Crystal Palace 3-2 with a brace from Mark Brennan in Barclays Division One while the Reds were being held 0-0 at Everton. Ipswich Town went top of Division Two after a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough while Bristol City went second with a 1-0 win against Blackburn Rovers. Brighton got their first points of the season as they won 2-1 at Barnsley thanks to goals from Mark Barham and Bryan Wade. The top four sides in Division Three recorded second victories with W.B.A. winning 1-0 at Darlington, Birmingham City winning by the same score at Fulham while Brentford won 2-1 at Exeter City as did Peterborough at Hull City. In Division Four Blackpool, Hereford United and Rotherham had won both their matches and they would have been joined by Gillingham but were held 1-1 at York City. Meanwhile Maidstone slipped to a second defeat going down 0-1 at home to Halifax Town.
We, then still Hastings Town, entertained Burnham in the Southern Division of the Southern League and won 2-1 with goals scored by Paul Giles and Dean White from the penalty spot.
2013 Goals were at a premium in the Barclays Premiership with just eleven scored in the seven matches played that day. A Daniel Sturridge goal secured Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Aston Villa and second place in the table behind Arsenal. The Reds going above West Ham United who were held in a goal less game at Newcastle United. The top six sides in the npower Championship all remained unbeaten with Leicester City and Q.P.R. going level on points with leaders Blackpool; City defeating Birmingham City 3-2 while Rangers won 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers James Vaughan netted the only hat trick of the day as Huddersfield Town beat AFC Bournemouth 5-1 while goals from Andy Crofts and Jose Ulloa saw Brighton to a 2-0 win over Burnley. Leyton Orient and Peterborough United preserved their perfect four match start in Division One, the O’s beating Crewe 2-0 while the Posh won 5-0 at Tranmere Rovers. Despite being held 2-2 by Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United stayed top of Division Two while Chesterfield went above Southend into second place after beating them 2-1.

Burgess Hill Town began the campaign by firing seven goals past Hythe Town, but any optimism that victory generated amongst their supporters evaporated Tuesday night as they were given a hammering of their own and to make matters worse, it was administered by their closest rivals. Shaun Saunders is already a legend in Haywards Heath, and walloping five goals past the Hillians will probably earn him the freedom of the Town and the right to drive sheep down Perrymount Road. He had suggested that this season would be more difficult than their debut Isthmian campaign which saw them qualify for the play-offs but it seems that his players haven’t taken any notice of that message, having recorded their second consecutive win. Trevor McCreadie, particularly, must have had his fingers in his ears, as he scored FOUR goals of his own before Warren Mfula got the Hillians on the scoresheet and even then that moment of happiness was short lived for the visitors, as Callum Saunders made if five-one three minutes later. Four hundred and seven turned up to watch. Heath are already our only one hundred percent-ers (although Ashford Utd have a game in hand), and Herne Bay climbed to second place with a three-one win over Phoenix Sports. They fell behind to an own goal, but Zak Ansah grabbed an equaliser just before the break and a second six minutes from time, goals which sandwiched a strike from Ricky Freeman just after the hour. Newly promoted Cray Valley PM are third, and Tuesday night they celebrated their first victory, running out three-one winners at Sittingbourne. Anthony Edgar gave them an early lead only for Ryan Flack to equalise for the Brickies, but Cray were ahead once more midway through the half through Ryan Flack, and Danny Smith made things secure just after the hour mark. New Hastings United striker Ben Pope picked up another nasty injury in pre-season, but as always he shrugged it off and got back to doing what he does best - scoring goals. He got both of them in victory over Faversham Town Tuesday night, before being withdrawn to be shrouded in bubble-wrap eight minutes from time. United are fourth. Whyteleafe are up to fifth, and they came back from being two-one down at Chichester City at half-time to pick up three points. An own goal gave Chi the lead in the very first minute, only for Ronald Sobowale to equalise midway through the half. City were ahead by the break through Scott Jones, but twelve minutes after the restart Sobowale did it again, and then a minute from time came the unluckiest moment of all for the home side, another own goal handing victory to the visitors. Whitehawk looked as if they were going to pick up their second victory of the season when Lucas Rodrigues put them ahead at Sevenoaks Town, but Tyrell Richardson-Brown, a promotion winner at Horsham last year, thought better of it and got an equaliser for Oaks twenty minutes from time. Oaks and the Hawks sit seventh and sixth respectively, separated only by goals scored. VCD Athletic fell to narrow defeat at Whitehawk last Saturday, but picked up what proved to be a narrow victory at Oakwood Tuesday night. Three Bridges Town were the visitors, and stung their hosts in the very first minute as Andre McCollin put them ahead. The lead lasted only for minutes before Raphe Brown got the equaliser, however McCollin made it two for Bridges a minute from half-time. There was still time for another equaliser before the break - Kelvin Ogboe scored from the spot. In the second-half the home team took control, Timi Toluwanile and Jack Steventon making it four-two, although Tom Tolfrey made them sweat a little by pulling a goal back three minutes from time. Hythe Town, walloped by Burgess Hill last weekend, put that behind them to record victory over Whitstable Town. Thomas Carlton scored their first after only thirteen minutes, and Rhys Bartlett doubled the advantage and sealed the points ten minutes from time. Finally, the College Lane audience was served up a six goal thriller, as East Grinstead Town and Guernsey shared the spoils. The Green Lions were two up after only six minutes, William Fazakerey and Ross Allen with the goals - but the lead didn’t last, as within eleven more minutes the Wasps were level through Reece Batchelor and Curtis Gayler. Fazakerley looked to have taken the points eleven minutes from time when he got a third for the visitors, but Karn Miller-Neave got another equaliser from the spot.
