FROM THE BOARDROOM WELCOME

Billy Wood

Welcome to the Pilot Field as we welcome the staff, players and officials of VCD Athletic. Tuesday night was frustrating and exciting, for a 0-0 draw you will find it hard to find a game so entertaining. A huge congratulations has to go to both keepers who up against really good attacking line ups kept clean sheets. Big G being the class act (on and off the pitch) as he usually is and our own Louis Rogers getting back-toback man of the match performances at home.

It’s been such a shame to report the news of Davide Rodari who will be out for the rest of the season. Davide is a fine example of what we want from a character at Hastings United and whilst he won’t be on that pitch his contribution this season has been massive and we will help him get fit and firing next season I’m sure, in the claret and blue of the U’s!

Today we sit 6 points clear, I’m sure we will do everything to get back to winning ways after 2 (yes just 2) games without one. We welcomed new signing Warren Mfula to the club on Tuesday night and I’m sure he is chomping at the bit to get going. Let’s show him the support we continually show all our players.

Let’s keep the noise loud! The best fans in football! COYU Billy Billy Wood HUFC Chief Executive Officer

MANAGER’S NOTES

Chris Agutter

Good afternoon everyone. A warm welcome to the VCD Athletic board members, Club officials and players to the Pilot Field today ..... from all at HUFC we wish you a safe journey to and from our town. On a more specific note I look forward to welcoming VCD’s Manager Keith McMahon today ...... a straight talking, experienced and very successful Manager who will no doubt be rallying his troops today off the back of their 0-5 loss in midweek ..... he will no doubt get a reaction from his players.

I’m delighted that we’ve weathered a really challenging post Christmas period ...

It’s really important that nobody associated with Hastings Utd gets too carried away with our current status as league leaders ...... we must stay humble on and off the pitch and remember we still have a long long long way to go ..... if it was easy the Club would have been promoted along time ago when more money was spent, more experienced Managers were in situ and more high profile ‘names’ were wearing the U’s claret and blue. I’m delighted that we’ve weathered a really challenging post Christmas period ..... and despite carrying injuries to key personnel we’ve managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over ...... with Dan Hull going out on loan and Davide’s season being ended early we have been able to bring in Jerald Aboagye and Warren Mfula ..... two players that are humble, hardworking and hungry to achieve success with Hastings Utd. Today we aim to make it 11 wins from a possible 12 at home .... with teams now parking the bus and dropping off opting for the counter-attack we need to remain calm, patient and measured ...... knowing we pretty much always score and very rarely concede means we are never going to be far away from picking up the next 3 points ..... all the time we continue to work hard and RUN! Lastly ..... and it’s a challenge to our support ..... can the three ‘other’ sides of the Pilot Field match the volume produced by our incredible ‘behind the goal’ support ..... rather than moan about the odd swear word let’s jump on the band wagon and match the noise .... THIS is the type of support that helps the team! Positive positive positive .... COYU’s!

GUT FEELING Simon Stoddart A light hearted – and on many occasions, anything but light hearted, look at life here in what is now known as the BetVictor Isthmian League's South Eastern Division. My rants and raves are not connected with the club in any way.

GAMES COMING THICK AND FAST ... Games coming one after the other. It's reminiscent of how it used to be - regular weeks of a game on Tuesday and going again on Saturday. One thing that hasn't changed tooooo much is the traditional kick-off times of 3pm on Saturday and 7.45 pm on Tuesday night. Translated into 11pm and 3.45am for supporters and programme contributors out in the Philippines!

one to look at with it's travel arrangements. That shouldn't feature in a United fixture list for a while though. As stated in previous GFs, the travelling in this division is nothing compared to what we used to have in the Southern League. Even the smaller region Eastern and Southern Divisions featured 300 mile plus round trips. Having said that - the Isthmian Premier was spreading its wings to places like Lowestoft (350 mile round trip) and Leiston (290). They both do their things in the Southern Premier Central these days.

There are exceptions of course. Guernsey kickoff times have to be timed to fit in with airline schedules (Did you EVER think that would happen in the semi-pro game?) and Burgess Hill midweek kick-offs are timed at 7.30 pm so as to avoid disturbing local residents (Never been quite sure what difference that 15 minutes earlier kick-off time makes). It is a bit unusual that something as radical as air travel to domestic football should work it's way up the structure. Here we are in step 4 and step 6 (Jersey Bulls who will be step 5 next season) flying once a season to a game while the great majority of clubs two or three steps above us have no concept of air travel for games. Guernsey have stalled in this division after a rapid start in mainland football - if Jersey Bulls keep their momentum up (p 22 won the lot) then the novelty of air travel could work its way up the pyramid. Games at Newport IoW featured a short ferry haul for quite a few seasons and with the Isle of Man looking to enter a side into the mainland semi-pro game, that will be another interesting 16

Different world down here ........... Coronavirus up north in China, Mount Taal volcano steaming away 100 miles south .......

THREE TOUGH GAMES 5 POINTS United have embarked on what will be a season defining sequence of games. And made a pretty good start. Haywards Heath was the last game I saw before disappearing to warmer climes. I followed the Sevenoaks fixture on Footballwebpages and Twitter - I think I wore out the refresh button in that last 10 minutes - and it was more of the same for Herne Bay on Tuesday. Hit the sack around 6.15 am after that one. 0-0 saw an end to the 100% home record but who's complaining? 510 was a fine mid week attendance to follow on from the 342 at Sevenoaks a week ago when a large United contingent made their way up the A21. That must have doubled the average Sevenoaks gate. The Herne Bay game was the one in hand on Ashford and extended our lead to 6 points with them here next Saturday - a few days after the midweek game at Whitehawk. Throw in today's fixture with Vickers Cray Dartford aka VCD Athletic and hmmmm, yes, it's quite likely season defining.

RUGBY GOES DOWN THE SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL ROUTE Indeed it does. Saracens having already been hit with a huge fine of 5 million quid and a 35 point deduction for creative salary payments in the top tier of the English domestic game have had another points deduction which effectively relegates them. Hence my comment comparing rugby with semi-pro football where, all too often, promotion and relegation are decided by rule book from in front of a computer monitor. Instead of where it should be - out there on the pitch. The rugby Premiership administrators have effectively wrecked the natural progression of the domestic game by ensuring the worst side doesn't go down, caused chaos in the next division down and probably caused the national team some grief too.

Football at it's very best, at all levels.

WELCOME BACK SCOTT WHITE Good to know our resident photographer is back in action after a couple of months off. Joe Knight and his dad did a great job standing in for Scott - some outstanding Scott like work for the Haywards Heath game! We are very lucky here to have some first class media people. Standards have gone up everywhere, it has to be said. Sevenoaks put together some very slick coverage of last Saturday's game. It's all invaluable when you're down this neck of the woods in South East Asia.

Traces of the old Soviet presence in eastern Germany still to be found. CSKA = Central Sports Club of the Army. This was the CSKA Moscow emblem. GUT FEELING Cont P18

George Wakeling R with the Southern League's head honcho, Dennis Strudwick. I remain stunned to this day he showed up given it had taken Hastings Town 3 seasons to get back what the Southern League took away by rule book in 98/99. Finished 5th and relegated. Now Rugby Union goes down the same road.

BIG ONE NEXT SATURDAY Decent day's weather hopefully should see last season's 1,123 gate for the play-off semi-final at least equalled. Ashford United call in ....

WARREN MFULA JOINS THE 'U'S

Warren Mfula

Jerald Aboagye

We have had some new arrivals in the past week at the Pilot Field as we gear up for the second half of the season, as we chase not only promotion but the Isthmian South East League championship! Firstly, from Ashford United we welcome Jerald Aboagye. A strong and agile full-back who will add extra reinforcements in that position. Jerald is versatile and a player we are extremely delighted to have on board, sharing the same passion as all at the club do, to win the league and progress. Jerald has already shown what he is about with his league debut last Saturday and his home debut Tuesday night vs Herne Bay! Last Tuesday night, at half-time, we announced the signing of former Cray Valley PM striker, Warren Mfula! Warren joins us having netted 14 times already in the Isthmian South East League this season. A striker with a keen eye for goal, deadly finishing ability and will add extra firepower into the squad as we push on over these next few months. Warren is excited to get started with the U’s this week! As you have with Jerald, please welcome Warren into the Hastings family. #COYU

TODAY’S VISITORS VCD Athletic FC is one of only a few clubs to have originated during the Great War when, in 1916 it was formed by workers employed at the Vickers armaments factory in Crayford. The Company originally played only inter-departmental games until it was decided that the best players from the various sections would be elected to represent the firm. The club have played at the firm's sports ground, Oakwood, in Old Road, Crayford, from the outset right up to the present time, except for eight seasons spent ground sharing whilst trying to get permission for the erection of floodlights. In the early days, only friendly matches were played as there were no official competitions during the war years, and records show that a club called Vickers (Erith) joined the re-formed Kent League in 1919, changing their name to Vickers (Crayford) a year later. In their first season in the Kent League they visited Maidstone United on Boxing Day and played in front of a crowd of 13,500. The Vickers team that day contained seven Arsenal players who were finishing off their war service. Two years later, Vickers joined the Dartford & District League, followed by entry into the newly formed Kent Amateur League, Division One in 1923. Their first trophies came in 1927, the Kent FA Junior Cup and the Kent Benevolent Cup. It was a further 25 years before more silverware came their way, when they won the Kent Division One title in 1953. The Kent Amateur Cup was won in 1962 and in 1964 but the following season saw a spectacular slump and relegation, with a record of P24 W0 D2 L22, goals for 25, goals against 199. Promotion was gained in 1969, but after a mediocre period during the 1970s, they were relegated in 1980 back to Division Two. A season later they were promoted back to Division One and in 1985 won the championship, gaining promotion to the restructured Premier Division. By now the Kent Amateur League had changed its name to the Kent County League and the club enjoyed further success when they won the Kent FA Intermediate Shield in 1988. In the same year the club was involved in the last ever match played at Maidstone United's London Road ground when they won the West Kent Challenge Cup. In 1993, Martin

20

Ford joined the club as manager and, in season 1995/1996 a unique cup treble was achieved with wins in the Kent Intermediate Shield, Kent County League Cup, and the Erith Hospitals Cup. Season 1996/1997 then saw the club win the Kent County Premier Division title for the first time in their history, and by a record 15 points. Senior status was awarded that same year and a successful application was made to join the Winstonlead Kent League where, in their first season in modern times, VCD Athletic finished in a creditable ninth place. The following season saw the club begin a ground-share with Thamesmead Town, finishing up in seventh place but also reaching the final of the Kent League Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Deal Town in a closely fought match. Deal at this time were assembling the side that was later to win the FA Vase at Wembley. A season later the club went one better, beating Faversham Town 4-0 in the final to bring the club a first ever senior trophy, and the season after that the club made its third consecutive cup final appearance when they reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy. However, they narrowly missed out on more silverware when they went down 10-9 on penalties to Whitstable Town. The club eventually spent five seasons as tenants of Thamesmead Town before Lordswood FC kindly took their place for two seasons. Then the club embarked on a one year term with near neighbours Greenwich Borough, and despite the handicap of having to ground-share, VCD were consistently one of the league's strongest members during their time in the league. The club reached the final of the League Cup in 2002/2003, but on the day there was no celebration as VCD were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Cray Wanderers. The following season was a disappointment as far as the cups were concerned, but a creditable third place was achieved in the league. Further cup success followed however when, in season 2005/2006 the club reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy for the second time. Having suffered a loss in the first final on penalties, there was a reversal of fortune this time when, after having drawn 1-1 with Tunbridge Wells at the end of extra time, the VCD players held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

VCD ATHLETIC FC During 2005 the long awaited news the club wanted to hear finally arrived when planning permission for floodlights and the development of the Oakwood ground was granted by Bexley Council. This, together with a substantial grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, part of the Football Foundation, enabled work to commence early in 2006. The pitch was levelled, rotated 90 degrees and re-laid. New perimeter paths were laid, along with perimeter fencing to enclose the pitch. Floodlights were erected in June 2006, at the same time that work on enhancing the changing rooms also began. The spectator stand was re-sited and extended, and further additions included a new raised hospitality area situated to overlook the pitch, and a new tea bar adjacent to the popular members bar. At the end of the 2007 season Martin Ford resigned as manager, and the club are grateful for his vision and enthusiasm over the years that took VCD from being a Kent County League side to one that was always around the top of the table in the Kent League, and on his departure the club had just reached the last 16 of the prestigious FA Vase for the second consecutive season. Head coach Dean Frost took over as caretaker manager, and under his guidance the club obtained runners up spot in the league, narrowly missing out to Whitstable Town, and then the following season Paul Foley was appointed manager of the first team, with Dean Frost reverting to his former position of head coach. Under their stewardship the club finished runners up once more. A year later, the club finally won the Kent League Premier Division title together with the Kent Senior Trophy, culminating in the long awaited promotion to the Ryman Football League. The first season was a success with an 8th place finish, but the club were left stunned when the Ryman League deemed ground issues warranted demotion, and despite an appeal to the Football Association, the decision was upheld and the club went back to the Kent League. Manager Paul Foley resigned to join Chatham Town, taking virtually the whole team with him, and the club appointed former reserve team manager Ricky Bennett his replacement. Under his leadership VCD achieved third place in his first season, and the season after the team was also challenging for honours and, but for a disappointing end to the campaign we certainly would have given Herne Bay a closer run to their title. Once again third place was attained but this time we had the added bonus of winning the Kent League Cup, beating Corinthian 2-0 in the final. We also lifted a second trophy with a 3-2

victory over league champions Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield which gave the club a pre-season boost. Midway through season 2012/2013 Ricky Bennett left the club due to outside pressures, and in his place the club secured the services of Tony Russell, previously manager of Erith Town FC, who joined with his assistant Ray Powell. With most of the players leaving with the previous manager the club was in disarray, but a side was quickly formed by the new management, and a magnificent record breaking run of 17 victories and 2 draws in the last 19 league fixtures enabled the club to once more gain promotion to the Ryman Football League Division 1 North. Starting as favourites for relegation, the club had a stunning run, winning the first15 games and heading the table for all but a couple of weeks throughout the campaign, and on the last day of the season, sitting in 2nd place the Vickers defeated Romford FC 6-0 while leaders Witham Town could only draw their last game which saw us secure the title by a point, taking the club to the Premier Division, its highest ever level in the pyramid. The club struggled for a lot of the season, spending most of the time in the relegation places but winning the last 6 games saw us climb to safety, finally finishing in 18th position to maintain our place in the division. Manager Tony Russell immediately resigned, joining Cray Wanderers FC in Division 1, taking his entire side with him but the club acted quickly to secure the services of Keith McMahon as new First Team Manager. Keith came with a wealth of experience having taken neighbours Thamesmead Town from the Kent League to the Ryman League Premier Division but, with no players at the club and only a few weeks to the start of the 2015/2016 season Keith was up against it from the beginning in trying to assemble a side to compete at the higher level. He worked tirelessly and brought in some excellent players, but despite some good performances we were unable to find the consistency needed in the Premier Division and were relegated back to Division 1 (North). Inconsistency during the following two seasons, albeit with some impressive wins against higher opposition in cup competitions saw us finish just below midtable. Following the Bostik sponsorship we were placed in the reconstructed South East Division and enjoyed a successful season finishing just one point shy of the play-off positions, and with BetVictor now as league sponsors we hope to continue making further improvement.

Popular with the players, he has also had experience with Barkingside, Harlow, Collier Row and also had a spell at Southend United. Mel Ramsay

First Team Coach Following a playing career with Stansted, Waltham Forest and Enfield, began coaching over 10 years ago. Vastly experienced and has made his mark on the fitness levels of the squad, which will be beneficial as the season wears on. Previous experience with Barkingside where he was also Assistant Manager, and Harlow Town from where he joined the Vickers.

Experienced goalkeeper who re-joined the club this season, having previously been part of our team that won the Isthmian League Division 1 North title in 2014. Was also a member of Cray Wanderers’ championship winning side last term and now makes a welcome return to Oakwood. An excellent shot stopper with great kicking skills and organises the defence well. Will bring stability and confidence to our defence.

Bradley Simms Defender Re-joined the Vickers this season having earlier been a member of our Under 18 side. A skilful defender with pace and good technical ability who will be a valuable addition to our squad. Whilst being sound in defence, likes to get forward where his pace is a threat. Previous experience with Erith Town and Whyteleafe.

Ralph Browne Defender Comfortable at either centre back or full back where he is equally effective. A big, imposing defender with great experience, who is good in the air, strong in the tackle and an integral part of the defence. Technically good on the ball, has previous experience with Met Police, Rushden & Diamonds and Margate.

Temitope Eweka Defender Joined the club briefly in 2018 before having spells at Kingstonian and Hastings United before returning at the end of last season. A tall athletic defender, who has pace, is good in the air and is commanding at the heart of our defence. Likes to get forward to set up attacks and looks to have a great future in the game.

Steve Wait

Goalkeeping Coach Played for Brent FC before joining Wimbledon FC as Academy Goalkeeping Coach, where he spent 10 years before going into management at Greenwich Borough and Slade Green. Went back to coaching goalkeepers in 2002 upon joining Thamesmead Town before coming VCD Athletic in 2015. Brings a wealth of experience to the club.

Theodore McKenzie Defender Made the step up from our Under 18 side this season and has put in some impressive performances. A solid defender with great pace and technical ability who likes to get forward, but is always mindful of his defensive responsibilities. Has not looked out of place and should become an integral part of our squad .It is up to him how far he wants to progress in the game.

Kieran Quarrington Physio

Rob Bartley Defender A new addition to the Vickers who has settled well into our defence. An imposing opponent, strong in the tackle and good in the air making a good example to our younger players. An experienced defender who has previously had spells with Crawley Town, Enfield Town, Met Police and Grays Athletic.

Joined the club at the beginning of this season following graduation from York St John University, where he achieved a BSC (Hons) in Sports Science and Injury Rehabilitation. This is his first appointment with a football club, where he brings a professional attitude to the task of minimising the time players are unavailable through injury.

LEAGUE NEWS VCD SIGN FORMER From: Ian Townsend

NUTS AND BOLTS SIGN COLEMAN Ashford United might have lost Jerald Aboagye to title rivals Hastings United, but they also brought in a replacement defender. Dquame Copeland arrived from Welling United. The defender has spent some time on loan at Merstham this season, making four appearances in November, but signed for Welling in the summer after spending last season turning out for Greenwich Borough and Bedfont Sports and spending some time in Sweden. He made three appearances for Sports at the end of last season, and this season has also been at Lewes, playing as a substitute in their draw with Potters Bar Town and starting at full-back in their victory at Brightlingsea Regent. He is equally adept at full-back and centre-back. He made his Nuts and Bolts debut in defeat at Cray Valley PM last Saturday. The club also welcomed back Ben Binder from his spell at Ramsgate.

NUTS AND BOLTS MIDFIELDER

VCD Athletic announced the signing of former Ashford United midfielder Laurent Mendy just before their kick-off against Guernsey last Saturday and he started in the number nine shirt, but ended up in goal! Mendy, who was making his first appearance for the club, volunteered to don the gloves after Vickers keeper Nick Blue was sent off after seventeen minutes, and then kept the Channel Islanders at bay until eleven minutes from time, when Robbie Legg scored the only goal of the game. The home side even had the chance to take a point when they earned a penalty a few minutes later, but sadly for the home faithful the usually-reliable Charlie MacDonald fired his spot kick over the bar. Mendy had made only two appearances for the Nuts and Bolts this season, adding to the nine he made last season. He has more recently been turning out in National League South for Dartford. He also spent time in the previous campaign with Whyteleafe and Greenwich Borough, after leaving Thamesmead Town, for whom he made thirty one appearances and scored twelve goals in 17-18 after joining them the previous season.

In Addition We expect our staff and volunteers to care about their job as this will ensure they care about our customers. PLAYER PROFILES

Dominic Vincent-Edwards

Jack Steventon

Midfield/Defender A tall commanding player equally effective either in defence or midfield who shows great composure for his age. Good in the air, comfortable on the ball with a good passing range, and should prove an integral part of our side this season. Was spotted last season at Herne Bay from where he joined us and looks to be an excellent acquisition.

Sean Roberts

Midfield Rejoined the Vickers at the start of this season following a spell with Cray Wanderers where he was part of their championship winning side. An experienced midfielder who shows composure on the ball, giving good protection to our defence. Has settled in well and looks a good acquisition. Previous experience also with Thamesmead Town.

George Monger Midfield A strong presence in midfield who brings composure and organisation to the squad. Solid defensively, and is also effective going forward with a good range of passing which makes him a difficult opponent. Previously with Ramsgate.

Forward Stepped up from our under 18 side last season and made an immediate impact in his first game for the club when scoring the winning goal against Sittingbourne with his first touch of the ball, after coming on as a substitute. A versatile player equally comfortable in defence who has pace, good technical skill and an eye for goal, and will be looking to make a permanent step up to the 1st team.

Charlie MacDonald

Forward A vastly experienced player who joined the club at the beginning of last season from Cray Wanderers. Has an excellent goal-scoring record at every club he has been with including former Football League clubs, and brings professionalism to the Vickers which should benefit our younger players. With the chances we create it could be a prolific season for him. Previous clubs include Charlton, Brentford, and Oldham.

Alex Gaggin

Forward Joined at the beginning of last season after being on the radar for much of last year. Has pace, good technique with a great attitude, and has immediately settled into the side. Will give us good balance down the right flank giving opposing defenders a tough time. Previously with Margate and East Grinstead.

Alastair Gordon

Midfield Signed for the Vickers in 2017 and has been an important part of our midfield, where he has become an integral component. Has good energy, pace and has had some impressive performances, linking up well with his team mates. A creative player who likes to get forward.

Kelvin Ogboe

Forward Signed at the start of the season and gives good width to our attacking options. Likes to get forward, has pace and has good delivery into the box. Will give defenders a testing time and should prove an integral part of the side. Previous experience with Phoenix Sports, Whyteleafe and Hastings United.

Aymun El-Moyhalbel

Midfield/Forward A player with great stamina who never gives up a lost cause. Has pace, is technically good with an eye for goal, and links well with his colleagues. Shows great potential and is becoming more composed on the ball as he gains experience. Never gives opponents time to settle and will be striving to become a regular member of the side as he matures.

Henry Ikeije Forward Signed at the start of the season and adds pace and strength to our forward line. A good passer of the ball who links up play well and poses problems for defenders. Looks to be a valued asset to the squad giving us versatility across our front line.

Ali Fuseini

Courtney Barrington

Midfield An experienced player who joined the club last season and made an immediate impact. Holds the ball up well and brings other players into the game with his vision and passing ability. Strong on the ball with an eye for goal and is an integral part of our midfield.

42

Forward A young wide player with great trickery and pace who put in some impressive performances in pre-season which have earned him a place in the side. Links up well down the flank and gives defenders a hard time with his natural ability. Looks to have a great future in the game.
