dream
editors note Dream. When we search in the Wikipedia, dream is described as “the successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. They can range from normal and ordinary to overly surreal and bizarre”. Editor in Chief Mira Asriningtyas
In this edition, you will find part by part of that definition expressed by each individual. Dream in terms of vision when we are sleeping, dream in terms of vision you project about the future, dream in terms of its surreal sensation.
Editor Dito Yuwono Art Director Bentar Sadani
Three creative projects are presented by three bloggers: Miy of “The Picnic Girl” collects dreams from hundreds of people and make collage out of it; Anna of “Much Love, Anna” brings us to daydream over sad, lonely, surreal images of an amusement park by the sea using her analog camera; and Sundea of “Salamatahari” tells a fairytale of delicious ‘icedream’ journey she had during her sleep (pay attention to her wordplay here).

Fantasy, vision, something that you want to be when you grow up, future job, images that you see when you are sleeping; it’s all very visual and powerful. That’s why we choose this theme for the fourth edition of Huff magazine. During the process of making this magazine, some dreams even come true. That is probably why it took so long to finish. Dream can be just a dream, and dream can come true in reality. In fact, in some of the earliest societies, the dream world was regarded as an extension of reality, though a more powerful world. Even that word itself: ‘dream’, evokes different senses to each and everybody. Whether dreams are real or not, standarized or free, we wouldn’t even try to search for any answer. It’s totally depend on human subconciousness and value. Now, what is dream to you?

I obeyed. I closed my eyes. Suddenly, my body became airy as her voice. I could see nothing but a spot of light. It fluorescent above the black and led me to levitate without hesitate. The journey was too free to be caught, but somehow, I didn’t afraid of being lost.

interview interview
Leslie Paramitha Gwen imported magazine owner What did you want to be when you were young? You know what, when I was young, being an actress and astronaut always on top of my mind
What is your purpose of life? My goal of life is quite simple and common: I want to get married, happy, longevity and rich. Ameeenn
What do you do now? Right now I’m running and widen my business, which sells imported magazines. Also, i’m expecting my little one now :d
What is your biggest achievement so far? I’m defending champion of “balap karung” in my neighborhood haha.. Hmm, I think my biggest achievement and contentment was being able to start & build this business from zero and get survive till now.
What makes you want to do this for the first time? Hmm it starts when i frequently buy imported magazines online, and then, an idea popped in my head: “why don’t start selling it in jogja with affordable price?” Where did you start? It was january 2009,I’m starting this business by selling it to my close friends, local community, take part on local bazaar / garage sale, set up flyers and deliver it to local studio, coffee shop, internet café, distro etc. Good old days What do you love about what you do now? As retailer of many genre imported magazines, I have a chance to meet lot of peoples from many backgrounds. Selling many genre magazines allow me to meet people from art to business and from celebrity to lecturers. What is the most important thing for you? My family, like everyone does; and then my husband, my best friends, and my business; and the list goes on.. What is your biggest dream? Having a book & magazines store all over the country and overseas, so i can work and go for a vacation at the same time.
How do you picture yourself in the next 5 year? 5 year? Oke, it will be a full time wife, dedicated mother and owning a book store with fine interior. What motivates you to keep doing what you’re doing? I think there still a lot peoples out there who need magazines supply for their reference, influence, work, education, news & information need etc. So “Gwen” will try to fill up the demand. In this world of 2.0 when everything’s seem to be digitalize; for me reading on “printing” paper was still a different experience. And the smell of new magazines when you open from wraps.. It’s so special! What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever got? Best is : don’t give up until you try your best. The worst is : diet!! What is happiness for you? Happiness in my opinion is when you can be somebody that your parent and family proud of. Describe yourself in 5 words. Fun person, joke, food lovers, easy going and savvy.

interview
Alia Swastika Curator
What do you want to be when you were young? I’m the kind of person who don’t actually have that specific ‘what I want to be when I grow up’. But since I were young, I always like to write and to travel. I knew my future job will be around those two things.
What is your purpose of life? It’s about believe in myself, doing what I can, building and being responsible in the making of a civilization and society. It’s more of the meaning of my existence rather than the purpose of life.
What do you do now? I am a curator. I work with a gallery in Jakarta, write for some medias, do some research for more scientific conference, and getting engaged in several art scenes.
What is your biggest achievement so far? Buying my own house. :)
What makes you want to do this for the first time? I always like the art. It started in high school where I join the theater group, managing a band, making art performance, and it just happens. Things happen, just like that.. I worked five years in Cemeti Art House, paying numerous visits to artist’s house, doing some research, and all.. so that my mind is never blank. What do you love about what you do now? Meeting a lot of people, from the common people to the crème de la crème, is a priceless lesson. It makes me more objective. My life has no fix pattern, there always tension here and there that I enjoy. Working with artist gave me different point of view, which is fun. The best thing is doing what I like. I’m lucky to be one of those people who do what I love for living. What is the most important thing for you? Having a time for myself, enjoying simple but meaningful thing whether it was a taxi ride to th airport, Sunday morning ritual, reading books, cooking for friends, watching videos, and chit chats. What is your biggest dream? I want to have better achievement than now. I used to always dream for myself, which has mostly achieved (working with artist, traveling around the world, etc), now is the time not to dream for myself only. I wish Indonesian passion for art is getting better than it does now. Ah, and I still dream of being a curator in MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and go back to school.
38
How do you picture yourself in the next 5 years? I want to live abroad, having a certain space with the art scene~ it is important to have a space to see what happen. I also want to have something other than art to contribute to other people’s live. What motivates you to keep doing what you’re doing? Hardworks, will of life, passion and all the things that follow. Most importantly, it’s guts. The art world is very dynamic; nothing is more dynamic than this. The art opens a chance to see the irony of the world and I never stop amazed to it. What is the best and worst advice you’ve ever got? Best: When I failed to get scholarship, someone say that wasn’t the way I destined to travel. I used to always rationalized and analyze thing, now I believe that the universe create some sort of webs, each line leads to another~ just like typical Javanese. Worst: I am an adventurer and I am blessed with good navigation ability. I hate it when people give me advice on directions and turns out to be wrong. What gets in your way? In Indonesia, it’s hard to be a curator. The infrastructure is crappy, the system is out of date, there is no contemporary museum, no career level, and everything has to be done by ourselves. That’s tiring. Five words to describe you Cross, Adventurous, Hard worker, Favorite color: green, romantic.

Yustina Neni
Kedai Kebun Forum Owner What do you want to be when you were young? I always want to own a shop. What do you do now? I work for Biennale Foundation. I don’t consider Kedai Kebun Forum (KKF) as a part of my job; it’s more like a part of my daily life, a home, and a part of me. What makes you want to do this for the first time? It’s a long and changing history, the identity keeps changing by the influence I got from the world outside, straight to the most intimate room inside. The first time I open a restaurant, it was because my whole family loves to cook and eat. I’ve always wanted to have a restaurant since I was a kid. I always sell anything. It’s in my blood. I love to sell. In terms of art, it was also a hobby. I’m lucky that my life is filled with hobbies. :) Making the gallery wasn’t actually something I wanted to do because the energy needed is extremely big, but then there is an empty space in my shop and that’s how it begins. What do you love about what you do? From the beginning, it was a serious hobby. A beneficial serious joke, it especially gives me the chance to employ people, learn and grow together, and makes me who I am today. What is the most important thing for you? Hygiene. It’s very important because I can’t sleep when the place is dirty. Whenever I’m about to leave my room, it has to be left clean and tidy. It feels comfortable when the room is clean. What is your biggest dream? Keep employing people, even more and continuously.
What is your purpose of life? Not to waste every breath I take and do everything wholly. When I work, I work. When I sleep, I sleep. Everything is done in total commitment. What is your biggest achievement so far? I enjoy my relationship with Agung Kurniawan. You see, I am not a loyal type. I judge a community based on the way it mvakes me comfortable. My husband is ‘other people’, comfort is very important to make me last long in that community (with him). Basically, I am a very individualistic person; I can leave whenever I want to. That is why having such comfort and rituals between my husband and I is such a big achievement for me. We don’t need to be a champion, comfort is what really matter. How do you picture yourself in the next five years? It won’t be much different from what I do now, whenever I finished a job~ I’ll always end up selling rice again. ;) What motivates you to keep doing what you’re doing? First, its fun and I won’t just stop doing what I’m doing now as long as the place is considered beneficial. What is the best and worst advice you’ve ever got? My father always say, ‘‘ When you’re working something out, don’t give up easily, don’t sulk” My mother once told me, ‘‘ When you eat out, don’t you ever pay for something exceeding your employee’s salary” worst advice? I never remember them, never even listen to it. Five words that describe you Cheerful, diligent, sensitive, careless, and motherly.

Two Sides of The Story: In The Woods
A Side: Risky Summerbee (Rizky Sasono) Space have always been my concern when it came to self initiated gigs. Somehow I’m that sort of person who follow my intuition of what works and what doesn’t. I might be wrong at times, but I still follow my own desire to find out that it was wrong. I had this dream about playing in an open air, in the woods, I think I kept that dream for almost two years, or maybe more. I couldn’t work out when that idea started, or how. It nearly vanished into thin air, until one crowded night at a friend’s gig I remembered what a friend said to me about his girlfriend’s house on the mountainside. I thought I could check that place. We did and then everything got rolling. Forget concert halls, auditoriums or cafe’s, played them all. We knew what we came here for. Or did we? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that space. It was the perfect hideout for lovers, quiet as dawn and fresh as a dew drop. Could the woods at the mountainside be sound for a rock n roll band? It didn’t matter anymore... A family of six finally found their way in the woods, after some rounds of drive around the area. Three generation they were.. which generation would you associate with the band? The grandparents, the parents or the children? A girl from Manchester who was there said to me days after the gig, “I didn’t see you playing the piano.” as she read reviews. “Oh, I must have been running around with the twins in the woods,” she justifies. A Norwegian woman taking photographs of kids blowing bubbles. Some people wore fancy dresses thinking of it as a party. An American woman came close to what would become a music critic as she wrote on the band’s fan page, “Thank you for the great music.” But can it be claimed as a music critic? Despite the fact that some six or seven nationalities were at the woods that sunday afternoon 17th July 2011, it was not just the music that made the atmosphere second to none. The pretty girls of Lir Shop were serving root beers, cupcakes, macaroni cheese, and other fancy food they placed in what seemed to be a Victorian styled tray.
40
I got myself a beer, that was enough for me to do some talking on the flatlands where the picnic was set. Lir thought of the food and the band provided some sound. The rest is just nature and everything that emerged from that intercourse with nature. It was a different sensation singing the first song “In the City” being 25 km away from the city centre and surrounded by trees. We played for some hour and a half I think, two new songs were introduced in the woods, Ending the afternoon at four with “The Place I Wanna Go” with me on piano and the sun shone through the leaves. It was worth the wait for some who spent the night at the mountainside wanting to get the most of the experience the following morning. A Belgian guy, who also came, noted that everyone who were there got more than what they came there for, as he said hiding his fatigue from the journey by public transportation. The sun was about to set when we all left the place. We had to beat the fog that ran down the hillside covering the woods. We all headed down, to be closer to the city heat. We may be missing the fireflies as dark came down fast, but I will definitely remember the refrain of the song. It was sang with Erwin, Doni and Sevri on the messed up backing vocals, with Sevri standing on the drum seat using a microphone stand to feed his two colleagues, with Nadya sitting quietly, smiling timidly. That is the picture I want to print, others may have a different pictures. But all taken from the same camera of joy, using the same frame of happiness, sharing the files of good time. We all get the credit for making a good atmosphere in the woods 1
1. I dedicate the last paragraphs to a number of photographers and fans who couldn’t find the location and went back home.
B Side: The Picnic Girl (Mira Asriningtyas) When I was a little kid, my piano teacher taught me to play this magical song about a group of animals (rabbit, bear, fox..) that gathers in the wood, playing all sort of musical instruments in a concert. I forgot the title of that song, but I remember it starts with this line: “Making music two by two..”
Without a doubt, the music was performed very well and goes along with the picnic perfectly. Somehow, it suits the song they played about a place where everybody greets and smile, and nothing can go wrong. Turns out that the place is not very far away.
Years later, the idea of that magical music concert in the wood still enchant me; I keep dreaming about it. As a grown up, I didn’t dare imagine the fox, rabbit, and the bear to show up playing piano and trumpet. Instead, I prefer having human playing the instruments and all the other creatures gather to watch the concert. How cheery merry it would be?
In the middle of the concert, Belkastrelka joins them. Surprisingly, both Assa and Erson dress up as Sputnik Bunny and Space Bear. Now, seriously.. Does that ring a bell? You know.. that music in the wood with the bear and the rabbit I’m talking about earlier? Oh, Come on!! What’s better than having your childhood dream came true in your own backyard? I must be the luckiest girl that day!
So when Risky of Risky Summerbee and The Honeythiefs propose the idea of having a mini concert in my secret garden, I immediately said yes.
The day slipped away silently, leaving a lingering taste of delight and a smile in our hearts.
Risky Summerbee and The Honeythiefs.. Even the name is magical. Thinking about it, I can imagine a sunny Summer day by the prairie with all things bright and busy beautiful little winged creatures fluttering around. You know, that place between sleep and awake where you’re still dreaming? That day, the air taste of joy and serenity. Children running around, friends and family gathers, a man flying a red kite, dogs having their dayout, ladies parading in floral picnic dresses, and happiness float with the wind that gently strokes everyone’s chin. On the table, piles of berries, lychee, nuts, sandwich, and ginger beer served for the picnic.
Music #InTheWoods is a solo music concert of Risky Summerbee and The Honeythiefs at Kaligriya Wood. This event was also supported by Lir Shop. The A Side was written by the musician, the B side was written by the owner of Lir Shop. “Dreamy Movies for a Lazy Rainy Day” Prepare your slouchy sweater, cuddle in the most comfortable love seat, brew freshly ground coffee, and let your mind travel along with these dreamy movies.
The Diving Bells and the Butterfly (2007) If you opt for more surrealist images, try watching this movie. The unusual pictures make you feel like peeking into someone else’s dream. As if you are being in a place between sleep and awake; the place where you can still remember dreaming and a hush conversation lingering in a distance, and the smell of the sunlight enters the window, and you start to see the light and yet the world is unclear. Above all, the story was based on a captivating memoir of JeanDominique Bauby; a story to remember, indeed.
The Virgin Suicides (1999) Sofia Coppola shows a delicate daydream-like images with soft lights and gentle movements. The whole scene is very feminine and the story is whimsical you can almost feel the wind and the soft linen that gently touch their skin. It’s tragic and beautiful at the same time. The movie will remain, inspire, and echoed long after we finish watching it.
Before Sunrise (1995) | Before Sunset (2004) Because love is a journey, let’s celebrate it with this charming movie about finding romance along the way. Their love story is fanciful, the places they travel are simply irresistible, and the bittersweetness keeps on twitching our heart~ it feels a lot like love story of our imagination, isn’t it?
My Blueberry Nights (2007)
The Fox and the Child (2007)
Wong Kar Wai is an expert in creating a highly satured image that reminds you of an intense dream. The kind of dream when you still can taste a bit of pain enduring after you wake up.
I don’t know how about you but when I was a little girl, I used to dream to tame a wild animal to be my loyal companion.
The images are taken from blurry CCTV camera, behind stickered glass door, and from unusual angles. The combination of these images with quotable words will surely bring you back to that painful intense dream over and over again.
The story reminds me a little bit of a phrase in Le Petit Prince book, delivered with a clever twist. A relationship between a child and a beautiful fox combined with breathtakingly stunning view that looks almost like coming straight out of a fairytale. It’s worth watching for every age.

Confession of a Newly Wed by Riskie Nurindiani
What do you have in mind when I say something like ‘lifeafter-marriage’? I used to picture some slow motion videos, with the sun shinning so bright (it looks almost overexposed) and everyone are gathering around, laughing happily. But it wasn’t like that, at all. At least, not for me. Marriage doesn’t make the sun shines brighter or people laugh more. Marriage is just an extension of daily life, with a more complicated world. At some point, I even see marriage as death. Not a complete, tragic death. Yet, I realized some part of my world died when I dressed up for my wedding on last March. In my case, it is my irresponsible self and my past that died.
The big question is: for how long? For how long I would stay living single? For how long my friends will stay single? For how long I could have this fun as a single? Time wouldn’t stop and gave me a lot chance to think.
Or the best way to say it, marriage has burned the bridge to my past.
If I already have ‘the one’ in my single and fun world, why wouldn’t I start to move to my next stage? Why do I have to wait?
Stepping into marriage life means giving your life a straight and bold border line without any U-turn - something that I usually look for before making any decision on anything. Even if the Uturn existed, the consequences of using it would be enormous.
At one point of life, marriage is something that I wanted to do. Having my own family, building my relationship with someone I love, growing our family with a plan set for a long period of time.
The border line was so bold and straight that I couldn’t play around with it. Every memories, selfish hopes in the past, happiness of being alone, or those blue yet sweet feeling from the past, have to be closed and kept them as the way they are - as memories. Then I stepped, making vows, and thickening the bold border line in front of everybody - my self, my spouse, our family, and God. And, also all the guest that arrived on the happy-weddingday. Like death, after stepping in to the new world, there won’t be any chance to get back to the same point before I moved my feet. I could, but I have to change label. And everything wouldn’t be the same anymore. These days, I am in the middle of what they called an adaptation phase. A phase where all the memories and all the new things to be compromised, collide. Moments that made me think how happy it is to be single are still blinking in my mind. Times that I still stood alone, times when I could manage my own schedule, freely choose which I like and which I don’t, determine my own path, and even times when I could freely say hi to the past.
46
But as the blurry image of single life that I have left behind faded out, I could see my self better. Marriage is not a game. It’s neither a trial and error thing. Anyway, I can say that not getting married is fun. Seriously. I even still admit it right now. It will be better when I still have my unmarried friends and those selfish hopes that I haven’t achieved.
The consequences’ that came along are sacrifices to be made and compromises to be dealt with. Then again, will I be happier if I keep dodging the marriage thing? Perhaps I could say yes to that today. I still have my unmarried friends and my big family. But imagine saying the same thing twenty years later? I can’t. Am I sure I still want to be single, while my friends are having garden parties with their own family - and I’m not always invited? For me, being married is one of (but not the only) sign of being mature. A stage where I will have to struggle for my little family. Everything that I do will no longer only affected me, but it can also put my small family at stake. Therefore, it lessens my impulsivities’. I know, it’s a long and winding, and bumpy, road. So, to make this marriage life easier for me, I’ll just look at it as an other adventure - a never ending adventure. With a partner walking beside me.
