Leander Club Henley-on-Thames

Leander Club Leander Club is the most prestigious and successful rowing club in the world, with 111 Olympic and 1 Paralympic medals won by our members up to and including the London Olympics in 2012. Founded in 1818, we are recognised globally for our achievements, at Henley Royal Regatta, the World Championships and the Olympic Games. As home to rowing heroes like Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell and Double Olympic Champions Steve Williams and Pete Reed, the club aims to attract and develop high-potential young oarsmen and women by providing state-ofthe-art facilities and world-class coaching. But it has a great deal more to offer. Alongside rowing we run a private members club which is also open to nonmembers. Any business, organisation or individual can pay to use Leander’s facilities, which include: Proud sponsors of Leander Club meetings

Leander and Henley Royal Regatta Leander is inextricably linked with the Henley Royal Regatta. The Regatta started as long ago as 1839. Later, in 1896, as Leander’s rowing pre-eminence was seen to be matched by Henley’s excellence as a venue, Leander decided to build a new clubhouse there. Club emblem Leander’s emblem is the hippopotamus, known in Africa as ‘King of the River’, the only animal equally at home on land and water. Leander’s club tie. Very few, if any, other organisations in the world have a tie that is a single colour without any emblem or other marking. Only members with distinguished service to rowing are permitted to wear the coveted pink livery. and the lover of Hero, virgin priestess of Aphrodite. Their love story was told by the English poet and dramatist Christopher Marlowe in his poem ‘Hero and Leander’

Leander Academy The Leander Academy is open to male and female rowers who have aspirations to progress and compete at a high level. The purpose of our academy is to build the future success of Leander rowing and feed young rowers into GB national teams by taking the ethos, passion and success of the Leander brand to the next generation of our rowers.

We invite students who are graduating from university together with students taking a year out before going to university to contact us at rowing@leander.co.uk.

Our Success Story Leander prides itself on the achievements of its athletes who have enjoyed so much success since

the club was founded almost two hundred years ago. The impressive statistics speak for themselves – since 1908 Leander rowers have stood on podia across the globe as World and Olympic Champions. Almost 200 Leander rowers have now represented their country at Olympic regattas, where they have won a total of 111 medals, with many more successful at World Championships. Twelve Leander athletes won medals at the London Olympic Games, adding to a club tally since 1976 or 25 Gold, 16 Silver and 14 Bronze. Whilst pulling on a Leander vest is no guarantee of success, the support you will get to help achieve your aspirations is unparalleled.

Debbie Flood – Captain Having joined Leander from Tideway Scullers’ School in 2000, Debbie has gone on to win three world championship titles as well as becoming an Olympic silver medallist in the women’s quad at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. Our newly elected Captain finally hung up her international oars after London 2012, having also become the only British woman ever to have won the Princess Royal Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, where she has also won the Princes Grace Challenge Cup on two occasions. ‘I developed my international career through Leander over the last 12 years, it has been the perfect environment to help me get the best out of myself, with fantastic support on top of a great club atmosphere, making it the most successful club in the world’ she says.

So let’s get this straight. The US Navy Test Pilot School, home to some of the world’s crack aviators, gets its watches from Henley-on-Thames? The home of cream teas, rowing and cute waterfowl? Actually, it’s not as daft as it might sound. Because Henley is also the home of a company called Bremont.

The result is a chronometer with an adjustable 24-hour hand, that can display local time anywhere in the world, together with Universal Coordinated Time (the standardized time zone used by the military). Built by hand in our workshop, the mechanical movement undergoes an arduous testing process (something it has in common with its wearers) and is 99.998% accurate.

And, over the last ten years, we have developed watches for more than forty different squadrons, both here and in America.

The case is made from a stainless steel that’s seven times harder than anything you’ll find in conventional watches. (We bombard our steel with electrons to toughen it up.)

The US Navy asked us to design a timepiece for the elite pilots who train at their school in Patuxent River, Maryland.

Then we add not one, but nine layers of anti-reflective coating to the sapphire crystal for maximum clarity and hardness.

People who cross time zones about as frequently as the rest of us cross the street.

Some might call all this excessive. But it’s just the way we do things here in Henley-on-Thames.

The question is, how do you get your hands on one of these fine watches? Well, if you’re between the ages of 17 and 34, and an American citizen, you can of course apply to join the US Navy. But if for any reason that proves problematic, you’ll be pleased to hear we manufacture a version for civilians, the Bremont World Timer ALT1-WT. For this, you need only apply within at your nearest Bremont retailer.
