MISCellaneous Baseball Terminology WHIP (Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched): Add a pitchers walk total with his hit total and divide by the amount of innings pitched.

QUALITY STARTS: A starting pitcher logs at least 6.0 innings and allows three-or-fewer earned runs in an outing.

TOTAL BASES: Number of bases a hitter gains via hits only (add all together)...single = 1, double = 2, triple = 3, home run = 4.

AT-BAT vs. PLATE APPEARANCE: Plate appearance refers to any time a batter completes a turn batting. (NOTE: A plate appearance cannot be logged if a preceding runner was out on the base paths for a third out or the game ends with a runner scoring from third on a wild pitch or balk). At-bat refers to any turn batting that does not result in a walk, hit by pitch, sac-fly or sac-hit (bunt).

OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging): A player’s on-base percentage plus his slugging percentage. MLB average in 2015 was .721. Major League Baseball’s leader was Washington’s Bryce Harper at 1.109.

CLOSE AND LATE: A situation in which the game is in the seventh inning-or-later and the team batting is either leading by one run, tied, or has the potential tying run on base, at-bat, or on deck.

TIMES ON BASE: Includes the total number of times a hitter reaches base as result of a hit, walk, or hit by pitch...does not include times a hitter reaches via error or fielder’s choice.

CATCHER’S ERA: The earned run average of a team’s pitchers with a particular catcher behind the plate. To compute, multiply nine by the earned runs allowed by the pitchers for that specific catcher, then divide that figure by his innings caught.

HOLD: Credited to a relief pitcher who enters a game in a save situation, records at least one out and leaves the game never having surrendered the lead. NOTE: A pitcher cannot finish a game and earn a hold.
