How do you relate to your role as an art collector on the series? My mother, being an interior designer, would take me to a lot of auctions and museums as a kid. My father and grandfather were also portrait painters, so I knew this character. Why did you write a book about making The Princess Bride? Because it really was even more fun than it looked. I can barely remember a day without laughter. What’s another passion of yours? I enjoy following current events because I want to educate myself. I like to catch up on what’s going on in the world. What’s a day off like? Playing with my daughter [Dominique, 9] or a date with my wife [Lisa Marie]. A perfect day is both. —JULIE JORDAN

THE MOM, SUPERMODEL AND ACTIVIST ON WHY TAKING CARE OF THE PLANET MATTERS

from planting the seeds to eating the food from our garden. It’s great for them to understand where their food comes from and that it’s not just something you can buy. Do you ever let your kids watch TV? We try to limit electronic time, which can be challenging. I believe everything in moderation can work. But I want them to use their imaginations as much as possible. What’s your secret to looking so good? I think being happy. There’s nothing more beautiful than a smile. I also exercise daily and eat well, but it’s about attitude and your thoughts. And I meditate—if you have a negative thought, you notice it and can change it, which makes you feel better and look better. —CHARLOTTE TRIGGS,

What inspired you to visit the Amazon rainforest for a recent episode of National Geographic’s show Years of Living Dangerously? My intention was to raise awareness about the rainforest’s vital role in balancing our earth’s climate. Twenty percent of the freshwater on Earth runs through it; protecting it is critical. What do you teach your kids Benjamin, 6, and Vivian, 3, about protecting the earth? Children are extremely intelligent and watch what we do, so I do my best to lead by example. We’re mindful of any waste we create in our homes and recycle, compost, reduce and reuse when possible. You’re very into gardening and eating clean. Are your children into that too? Yes, they get involved in the entire project,

On Nov. 8, Prince Harry told the world how seriously he views his relationship with Suits star Meghan Markle. In an unprecedented statement from his Kensington Palace office, he blasted the “outright sexism and racism of social media trolls” and said he is “deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect” his 35-year-old American girlfriend of several months. “He no longer felt comfortable in himself that this was happening to her—not because of who she is, but because of who he is,” a royal source says of Harry, 32, who will be undertaking a royal tour of the Caribbean on Nov. 20. “How could he remain silent?”

People (and people on the Internet!) are obsessed with your new HBO sci-fi drama, Westworld. How do you feel about its success? I’m so proud. It’s a rare thing when the way you feel about a project lines up with the way other people feel. Playing a role like Dolores, a revolutionary female character, is an honor and a privilege. What exactly are you wearing during your character’s naked “analysis” scenes? I’m not wearing anything! It was made very clear to me before the pilot that that nudity was going to be a big part of the show, but that it wouldn’t be sexualized or gratuitous. The first scene I ever did with Anthony Hopkins, I was butt naked! Your son is now 3. Has motherhood changed you? It’s no joke when people say your heart keeps growing every day. He gave me so much more depth. You and actor Jamie Bell separated recently. How is coparenting going? Any separation, whether it’s amicable or not, is always difficult, but we’re doing our best. Another reason why kids are a gift? You let go of the things that don’t serve you or them. —K.W.

On her new show Nightcap (starting Nov. 16 on Pop TV), actor, author and producer Ali Wentworth plays Staci, a talent booker for a fictional late-night talk show. It’s a role she knows well; she once worked for Jay Leno and has been a frequent talk-show guest. “Talent bookers have a tendency to be very neurotic,” she says. “If Daniel Craig backs out at the last minute, they might take their own life.” Wentworth is also booking lots of her famous friends to play themselves—or, as she says, “heightened, funny versions of themselves.” These include Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, who, on their episode, are looking for a surrogate to bear a child. “One of Ali’s underlings is the baby vessel,” says Ripa. “But she really just wants us to get George and Amal Clooney on the show because we have the same publicist.” We asked Wentworth what she has up her sleeve for other celeb guests. Can we talk? Adams tries to decipher the language of aliens.

1

Amy Adams has a close encounter with aliens in a smart and surprisingly emotional thriller SCI-FI Twelve alien spaceships descend on Earth, hovering mysteriously in the sky. Where do they come from? What do they want? While most of the world freaks out and prepares to go all Independence Day on the visitors, the U.S. recruits a linguistics professor (Adams) to try to communicate with them. The creatures’ language is as strange and beautiful as they are (“ethereal octopi” doesn’t do justice to the movie’s creativity). Deliberately paced but highly rewarding, Arrival ups its IQ with Jeremy Renner as a soulful physicist, gorgeous production design (those minimalist spaceships might inspire Darth Vader to declutter) and a poignant twist that brings the drama back to the human level. Emeli Sandé, Long Live the Angels

The Scottish singer makes a heavenly return R&B After breaking out with the gospeltinged hit “Next to Me” in 2012, Sandé retreated from the spotlight for a few years, focusing instead on writing songs for divas such as Katy Perry and Mary J. Blige. So it’s fitting that rebirth is one of the themes of her sophomore album. “I’m deep in the womb, and I’m kicking on the diaphragm . . . Funny when I feel the choke of the umbilical,” the Scottish star sings on “Selah,” one of 15 new tracks showcasing her angelic voice. Whether she’s pining on heartbroken ballads (“Shakes”) or cherishing a new love (“Highs & Lows”), Sandé soars. (Nov. 11)

The Best New Books

BOOK OF THE WEEK

An exploration of friendship and race, Stephenie Meyer’s latest and a memoir with heft from the Daily Show’s Trevor Noah EDITED BY MICHELLE TAUBER

Stephenie i M Meyer The Chemist

NOVEL Best friends as children, two young black women become estranged. One is a dancer with a messy personal life; the other an aide to a Madonna-esque pop star who creates a school in Africa. In this absorbing tale Smith (White Teeth) tackles meaty subjects— including friendship and race—with her customary insight and grace.

THRILLER This page-turner

is quite the departure from Meyer’s blockbuster tales of vampire love: Secret government agent Dr. Juliana Fortis is as plucky as Bella was passive. On the run, Fortis is tricked into cracking one last case. Twilight fans will find another romantic couple to root for, plus the most supernaturally intelligent guard dog since Rin Tin Tin.

Trevor Noah Born a Crime

MEMOIR Trevor Noah brings twinkly

charm to The Daily Show, but the South African delivers blunt candor in his essays about growing up under apartheid. The interracial coupling that produced him really was a crime, making him an outsider. But he thrives with the help of his astonishingly fearless mother. (At one point she tosses him from a moving car—driven by gangsters—to save his life.) However brutal South African history is, their fierce bond makes this story soar.

Regina Calcaterra Girl Unbroken The sequel to 2013’s Etched in Sand picks up the story of Calcaterra’s abusive childhood, this time focused on her youngest sister Rosie. Their strength will inspire you.

Janet Reno Dies at 78 The pioneer prosecutor was the first female U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, whose eight-year tenure as U.S. Attorney General spanned some of the most contentious moments of Bill Clinton’s presidency, died on Nov. 7 of complications from Parkinson’s disease. Reno, the second-longest-serving Attorney General in history, was a divisive figure whose time in office was bookended by two national controversies: the 1993 deadly raid on a religious compound in Waco, Texas, in which more than 80 people died, and the 2000 international custody battle for 6-year-old Cuban refugee Elián González. Reno, a former Miami prosecutor known for her blunt manner, once famously told reporters, “I don’t do spin.” She was also fond of saying, “The buck stops with me.” Attorney General Loretta Lynch praised Reno in a statement after her death, calling her “an inspiration and a trailblazer for so many women serving in law enforcement and government, including me.” Lynch wasn’t the only one in Washington to admire her. Reno’s sister Maggy Hurchalla told the Associated Press that President Clinton called just before Reno died and said, “Tell Janet I love her.” —TIERNEY MCAFEE

As an English immigrant to America, I felt responsible for the actions of my ancestors and knew that the wealth and comfort of our society was built on this genocide. But I was always looking back at history and, to my embarrassment, had not realized until I discovered Survival International that the same genocidal practices continue today. The charity lobbies people in power, pleading for the rights and needs of tribal peoples, and gives these vulnerable groups a platform to speak about the genocidal violence, slavery and racism they face on a daily basis. In the end Hillary Clinton didn’t— perhaps couldn’t— face the anguish of supporters who waited hours at her “victory” party wearing their symbolic pantsuits and “I’m with Her” buttons. Around 2 a.m. she sent campaign chairman John Podesta to the microphone to say, half-heartedly, that the race was too close to call and she would not be making an appearance. “Go home,” he told them. “We are so proud of her. She’s done an amazing job, and she’s not done yet.” Within minutes word leaked from the Trump campaign that Clinton had called Trump to congratulate him— and concede.

In a crowded field of 17 Republicans jockeying for the nomination, his name recognition proved a valuable currency. And he seemed not only to court controversy but to thrive on it. “It’s all Trump all the time on television, so I really haven’t had to spend anything on advertising,” he told People last September, adding in a subsequent interview, “I think it works to my advantage most of the time not to act presidential.” Indeed, his singular brand of unapologetic blunt talk—including shocking statements about illegal immigrants, Muslims and women—struck a powerful chord. “He is refreshing. These are not rehearsed soundbites,” his son Eric, 32, explained to People at the outset of the campaign. “Maybe you only agree with 80 percent of what he says. But at least he is being direct and not just pandering to some middle road like every other politician.” In fact, as the campaign moved forward, Trump’s statements veered far from any road previously traveled by a U.S. presidential nominee: He seemed

usual. That rising tide, along with eagerness for an outside-the-Beltway Commander in Chief who vowed to “make America great again,” propelled him to victory not only in historically red states but in swing states like Florida and Ohio too. In President-elect Trump, America has chosen a leader unlike any this country has seen before: a former reality-TV star who has never previously held elected office. A thrice-married father of five who, at 70, is the oldest ever to enter the White House. A proudly uncensored billionaire who threatened to jail his opponent. While Trump’s supporters found his brash style and tough talk a refreshing antidote to historic norms, many others were troubled by what they viewed as dangerously inflammatory rhetoric. And yet, 17 months after Trump announced his candidacy, he proved the strength of his appeal to millions of Americans. Campaign insiders say the signs of victory were there. “The enthusiasm you’d see on the road was palpable,” says veteran Republican adviser Lou Midkiff. “I’ve only ever seen it before with early John McCain. You can cut it with a knife. It’s only been two weeks since Hillary was leading in the polls, but Trump closed the gap and turned it around. For the last seven days everyone inside the Pence campaign has been very confident of a win. Trump is a rock star when you deal with him.

What will Melania Trump— the second foreign-born First Lady (see inset) and the first who’s a former model—bring to the White House? No fan of the spotlight, the Presidentelect’s Slovenian-born wife, 46, stayed mostly on the sidelines during her husband’s campaign, preferring to focus on the couple’s son Barron, 10. But she did take the stage on Nov. 3 to announce the platform she’ll champion as First Lady: ending bullying on social media. “Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough,” she said in a speech that drew criticism pointing to her husband’s famously aggressive tweeting. “We need to teach our youth American values.”

“The campaign was really hard on her,” ” says a family source of Melania (at the second debate).

“We had that sparkle,” says Melania of Trump (in 2001).

Trump is far more reasoned. “There are two Donald Trumps,” his longtime friend Chris Ruddy told People in March, contrasting the then-candidate’s campaign“bluster”withthe“charming, generous, incredible Donald [his friends] know.” In October Trump faced the most serious setback of his campaign when a 2005 video surfaced in which the then-Apprentice star was caught on tape boasting to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush about forcibly kissing women and grabbing their genitalia without consent. When Trump publicly denied ever having acted on what he called such “locker-room talk,” a total of 12 women (including former People writer Natasha Stoynoff) came forward with damning allegations of sexual assault. (Trump denied each claim and threatened to sue the women following the election.) But the candidate rebounded, thanks in part to an 11th-hour investigation by the FBI into Clinton’s missing e-mails (the bureau concluded for the second time that there was no illegal wrongdoing), which quickly narrowed his gap in the polls. The results on Nov. 8 “show that the rules changed and only Trump saw it,” explains CNN political analyst Van Jones. “Not having a traditional operation hurt him less than people thought it would. And in a social media age, saying outrageous things may not really be a disadvantage.” There is no question Trump’s journey has been one of exceptional privilege and extraordinary opportunity. Born in Queens to Fred Trump, a real estate developer, and Mary, a homemaker, young Donald—the second youngest of five children— found success early, attending the Ivy League Wharton School of business and honing his entrepreneurial drive. (He avoided the Vietnam draft five times in the 1960s and ’70s so his education could continue uninterrupted.) After graduation he parlayed a $1 million loan from his father into his own real estate empire in Manhattan but soon had to settle federal charges of housing discrimination and faced frequent lawsuits and accusations of employing undocumented workers to build his famedTrumpTower.In1990hisdivorcefromfirst wife Ivana dominated the New York City tabloids after it was discovered he had been having an affair with beauty queen Marla Maples. After months of vicious headlines, the exes shipped their three children, Donald Jr., now 38, Ivanka, 35, and Eric, 32, to boarding school to shield them from the media. By the time Trump proposed to Maples in 1993, he was broke—with four of his businesses filing for bankruptcy protection within two years. (Trump and Maples welcomed a daughter, Tiffany, 23, just before their 1993 wedding.) But “the Donald” proved adept at bouncing back.

not thinking beyond Nov. 8,” says one source who spent time with him in October. “All he was thinking about was winning on Election Day.” Adds a close family source: “Everything will have to change for all of them. It’s really drastic, and it’s not something they were focusing on. It always did feel like it could go either way. Melania was always ambivalent about this, and now they’re going to suddenly be the First Family.” For Barron, who stayed out of the spotlight over the past year and has expressed fears of leaving his friends and home in Manhattan behind, the move is likely to be jarring, adds the family source. And as Trump’s older children continue running the Trump Organization (they will not relocate to D.C.), Melaniawillbe forcedtostepintothespotlightmore than ever. But it’s a change, Trump says, that the whole family believes is for the greater good. “Running for office impacted my family,” the soon-to-be 45th President toldPeople in September. “But they understand how important it is, what we’re doing. This is something I didn’t need to do. But I wanted to make America great again. . . . We’re going to bring this country to a level we’ve neverreachedbefore.” As he put it in his victory speech, after which the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” filled the room, “Ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement. . . . We must reclaim our country’s destiny. Dream big and bold and daring.” With Michelle Tauber and Sandra Sobieraj Westfall

He negotiated down his debts in the wake of his bankruptcies, and in 1995 he reported a nearly $1 billion loss on his taxes, allowing him to avoid paying income taxes for the next 18 years (a fact that was only publicly disclosed during the campaign). He was resilient personally as well as professionally. Though he later said he had toyed with the idea of an eventual presidential bid, Trump lived his life freely. Unconcerned with cultivating the clean-cut reputation of a typical politician, he gave raunchy interviews to Howard Stern, which later provided ample material for anti-Trump ads. Sarah Jessica Parker and Anderson Cooper. “Because there’s stuff [in there] that I really think about people I know [who] are now never going to do my show.” Be that as it may, like Cohen’s other two books, Superficial serves up an irresistible inside look at his glamorous, celebrity-packed life: Nicki Minaj being a diva on—and off—the air at WWHL; cruising the Mediterranean with Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg (“she winds up giving me really great advice”); and how bestie Kelly Ripa was really feeling during Michael Strahan’s sudden departure from Live with Kelly and Michael. Not to mention pinch-me moments like the day he visited Cher’s Malibu house (where he berates himself for turning down the chance to see her bedroom)—and then met Dolly Parton. “How crazy was that day?” he says. “I went to Cher’s, and then I go to [Hollywood heavyweight] Sandy Gallin’s, and he says he has a surprise for me, and Dolly Parton is there. I mean, that was amazing.” And then some.

he adds. “I hate labels, but it’s a nice thing, and we’re seeing where it goes.” Which isn’t to say that gossip lovers need despair just yet. In his new memoir Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries, due out on Nov. 15, the TV exec-turned-talk show host still manages to bring new meaning to the words “tell-all.” In fact, he says, “Last time I was censoring myself. But I felt like if I was going to do this again, I had to be more honest.” It’s a promise he amply fulfills—including detailing a threesome with a married couple, which even Cohen thinks “will be shocking to people.” Then again, that’s what comes with being “very transparent. I think I’m celebrating pop culture and my life, and I hope people take it that way,” he says. “The most important thing is that I’m the butt of the jokes.” Still, he admits to worrying that he may tick off at least a few people. “I’m really riding the line,” says Cohen, who shared early copies of the book with close pals

Taylor Swift was wondering aloud where there was a spot for her to watch Gaga perform. Why I felt I needed to get involved I will never know (maybe I was auditioning for her squad?) but I innocently said: “Your friend Katy is sitting in the corner and there’s plenty of room.” She asked “Katy Who?” and I said, “Perry,” at which point she clearly let me know that she’s the exact opposite of a friend. I kind of gasped, realizing she was in the most famous feud, one that I’d talked about myself endlessly on WWHL. I said that at least now she knows where not to go, which I thought made it all a laugh. She didn’t agree. I turned away completely mortified. I’d said something so moronic to TSwift. . . . She now thinks I’m a dick and I wasn’t even trying to be shady, I was just sticking my nose where it didn’t belong. And I saw Katy Perry alone in a really good area! And on top of that I failed my squad-ition! As she was walking away, she [commanded] me not to say a word about this on my show, and said that she’s watching. That made me feel good until I realized there might’ve been a “f---ing” thrown in before “your show.” (If she’s watching my “f---ing show,” that’s a little less exciting.) Hopefully she’ll start a new feud soon that I can invest in.

MICHAEL BUBLE’S SON’S CANCER CRISIS

‘WE ARE DEVASTATED’

Faced with terrible news, the singer and his wife are stepping away from fame to focus on their firstborn

t’s a diagnosis g that anyy parent p would dread: At just 3 years old, Michael Bublé’s son Noah has cancer. “We are devastated,” the Canadian pop singer, 41, and his wife, Argentine actress Luisana Lopilato, 29, wrote in a heartbreaking statement posted to his Facebook page on Nov. 4. As for why the pair, who are also parents to 9-month-old son Elias, decided to reveal the news, they added,“We have always been very vocal about the importance of family and the love we have for our children.” Noah’s diagnosis reportedly came as a shock to the doting parents, who according to ET Canada recently brought the toddler to the United States to seek treatment for what they initially believed to be a case of the mumps. While as of press time the couple had yet to confirm the specific type of cancer Noah has, it is not the

ttoddler’s first health scare.. In June Ju 2015, Noah was hospitalized after being accidentally scalded by hot water—an incident the couple’s rep described at the time as “nothing major.” Since tying the knot in 2011, Bublé has gone to great lengths to put his young family first. “It is a struggle to find a balance,” he told People in August about juggling his demanding music career and home life with Lopilato. “I’ll never find [balance] perfectly, but I will do my damnedest.” Now, as he and his wife focus on their firstborn, they’re completely stepping away from the spotlight. “Luisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well,” the statement says. “We have a long journey in front of us and hope that with the support of family, friends and fans around the world, we will win this battle, God willing.”

At 12, she had a Tony nomination; in her 20s she became the millennial girl next door with Pitch Perfect. She didn’t plan any of it, but that’s just fine. “We all figure it out a little bit as we get older,” Kendrick says with a smile. “I hope.”

Nice Is Overrated As Sondheim said, Nice is different than good. Do you need to do whatever you’re told to be a nice person? Maybe. Do you need to do whatever you’re told to be a good person? Of course not! Man, woman, personal, professional—some people have a skill for persuading you the best thing you can be is obedient. I gave up on being Nice. I started putting more value on other qualities instead: passion, bravery, intelligence, practicality, humor, patience, fairness, sensitivity. Those last three might seem like they are covered by “nice,” but make no mistake, they are not. A person who smiles a lot and remembers everyone’s birthday can turn out to be undercover crazy, a compulsive thief, and boring to boot. I don’t put a lot of stock in nice. I’d prefer to be around people who have any of the above qualities over “niceness,” and I’d prefer it if that applied to me, too. I’m also okay if the most accurate description of me is nervous, and a little salty. But at least I know what I want to strive for.

It was hard to fill your days when you’re in a new town and you’re not at a job or school.” While she auditioned, she got by on pennies and limited her social activities to those that were free, including repeat-watching the eight DVDs she owned. She also found herself in unhealthy relationships with men. “Something amazing happened to me when I hit my mid-20s,” she writes. “I stopped liking guys who didn’t like me back. In fact, I stopped liking guys who were bad people.” Looking back, “I was just so obsessed with certifiable nonwinners,” she says. “I allowed myself to believe that guys were more magical than they were.”

STARRING: BEN AFFLECK, ELLE FANNING, ZOE SALDANA, SIENNA MILLER DEC. 25 Could this be Affleck’s Godfather? He stars in and directs the gangster epic about a Boston hoodlum’s rise to power.

Besides directing the film, why did you also choose to star in it? It was such a great part and I had an in with the director, so he had to choose me. At its heart Live by Night is a morality story. Inside Joe is where all the real drama is happening. When did you read the Dennis Lehane novel the film is based on? Leonardo DiCaprio [the film’s Q&A producer] sent it to me the WITH summer before Argo opened. BEN I was trying to find something AFFLECK I wanted to do that was different. I had been watching old movies and feeling really nostalgic for Old Hollywood. What was it like making a movie set in the 1920s era? It felt like I was coming to work in another world. Seeing the room fill up with extras in period clothes was really fun. What can we expect from the film? A big, punchy, sexy gangster story that has all the great themes—redemption, lost love, true love and betrayal.

What was the most challenging scene to film? The assassination scene. She is the only person in history who experienced that. It’s really unimaginable and horrific. What helped you get into character? Q&A The clothes, the hair, the WITH makeup and learning the NATALIE accent and the rhythms of her PORTMAN voice. But the most crucial part was understanding the emotional and spiritual aspect of her. Was she a style icon for you? Before the film, I knew Jackie primarily as a style icon, but the film’s approach is to see her as a human being. She was very much aware that she was a symbol for people, but she also had a very complex and private interior life.

I worked with my stylist Law [Roach] on it, and it’s totally my vibe—urban elegance. Do you have any favorite pieces? I really love the jumpsuits. Because they’re one-piece, you don’t have to worry about picking out a shirt or pants. They’re comfortable too, so it’s like wearing pajamas. What’s your go-to off-duty look? Sweatpants. I live most of my life in them. Black sweatpants, a black sweatshirt, some [Nike] Air Force 1

sneakers and a bomber jacket. You’re also releasing Zendaya: The App. What’s it about? It’s going to be me sharing my world. People will get a chance to see me in a different light and learn more about my personality. A lot of the content is funny because I love making people laugh. People will see how much of a dork I am! What’s your ultimate style advice? There are no rules. That’s why I love fashion and find it so exciting. Don’t let people’s opinions affect how you live. If I allowed that to affect the way I dress, I’d wear a T-shirt and jeans every day. There would be a lot of things I’d miss out on.

Do you believe in trends? No. Everything that’s cool now won’t be later, and the thing that was cool will be cool again. It’s pointless to try and follow them. No one can tell you what to wear that will make you feel confident. So what makes you feel confident? I’m not afraid of wearing what I want. And I think that’s a way of being outspoken. Also you have to remember that you’re not supposed to be on a timeline. I know plenty of grown women who don’t know who they are yet. At any age you can have a transformation and come into your own or learn more about yourself. So go at your own pace.

‘YOU SHOULD DRESS IN WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL. THERE’S NO RIGHT WAY TO HAVE STYLE’

My secret to balance is to focus on one thing at a time. I used to be the most amazing multitasker, doing three things at once. Not anymore, now that I have my son. I think that’s Mother Nature’s way of saying this life you created takes all of your brain power. Now I’m like, “Mommy’s going on a conference call,” and I give him to his dad [photographer boyfriend Erik Asla]. By Jackie Fields

VINCE FLORES/STARTRAKS

I don’t look at hair as hair. I look at it as an accessory, like a hat that you put on and take off. So I’ve been wearing a lot of wigs. My assistant thinks that my son is going to pull off my wig in public because he holds my hair like reins on a horse. I pin it on really well so it doesn’t move, but I feel like one day it might, just a little bit.

MY BEAUTY RULES

I don’t want people to say, “Your makeup p looks amazing..” I want them to say, “Wow, you lookk beautiful.” Thaat at’s ’ss why I love tinteed moisturizers. They’re lighter [than foundation] and easier to o layer if you need more coverage.

MATCH YOUR MAKEUP TO YOUR ENSEMBLE I’m obsessed with matching your eye shadow to your clothes. People say don’t do it, but I think it looks purposeful and pulled together. For Joan Smalls, I wanted the earthy tones of her eyelids to match the rustic brown of her outfit. I actually used

beauty HACK Always finish your eye makeup before applying foundation, suggests Ta. “That way if your eye shadow falls onto your face, you can clean it up without ruining your base.”

a few layers of blush to give it a little extra pop. BLENDING IS KEY With a pigmented look, you have to blend it so you don’t have harsh lines. For Jenna Dewan Tatum, I started with an eye primer, then I applied a creamy eyeliner at the water line. Next, I added a cream eye shadow, which has such a rich color, followed by powder eye shadow in the same hue to set it. BALANCE OUT YOUR MAKEUP When the eyes are the focal point, I prefer to keep the skin looking fresh, so I reach for a foundation that makes it glow, like La Mer’s. It’s also long-lasting, which is nice because then clients never have to

worry about touching it up. I also like to do a neutral lip and natural brow, so that the eyes really shine and get attention. SEEK OUT IDEAS ON SOCIAL MEDIA Honestly, I used to work at a M.A.C Cosmetics store in Scottsdale, Ariz., and I moved to L.A. almost three years ago with the hope that I could one day do celebrity makeup. I knew I had a lot to learn, but I posted all the looks I did on social media. That’s actually how I met most of my clients, like Shay Mitchell. I thought it was so cool when she started following me! It proves social media is a great source for inspiration.

BE OPEN TO SOMETHING NEW You should have fun with makeup, because you never know what will look amazing on you. Alessandra Ambrosio normally wears a cat eye, so doing a sultry look was different for her. But when she saw it, she was superhappy. GIVE COLOR A TRY A lot of women are afraid of colorful eye shadow, so when I apply it, I try to make it as wearable as possible. With Gigi Hadid, when she’s in the mood for color, it has to sparkle, so I’ll add glitter on her eyelids. But for a more subtle take, you could use a colorful eyeliner. It’s still so striking.

Meet Our Baby Boy! THE CHEF AND HIS WIFE, MAYA, WELCOME THEIR FIRST CHILD TOGETHER WHEN MARCUS SAMUELSSON AND HIS WIFE, model Maya Haile, brought home their newborn son Zion, all of Harlem knew about it. “Everyone was engaged in some way because they’ve seen us through the pregnancy,” says the chef, who lives in the neighborhood and runs two of his 10 restaurants (Red Rooster Harlem and Streetbird Rotisserie) there. “It’s a community where we’re on top of each other, but that’s great because it takes a village, right?” For life-juggling help, Samuelsson, 46, also leans on chef friends like Emeril Lagasse and Jonathan Waxman. “We’re fortunate to have people who can give us advice and who have already balanced family, restaurants and a life of being a chef,” says the author of the new Red Rooster Cookbook. everything from Bob Marley to Kendrick Lamar to Frank Ocean, plus classical Ethiopian music,” says Samuelsson. “And I will definitely throw in some Swedish hip-hop eventually.” Incorporating their cultures—Samuelsson was born in Ethiopia and adopted by a Swedish family; Haile is also Ethiopian but was raised in Holland— into Zion’s life is a huge priority for the couple, whether it’s stressing their affinity for herring or Harlem block parties. “We have both traveled the world and lived in several countries, so for Zion to keep up that level of curiosity is a big hope,” says Samuelsson, who also has an adult daughter, Zoe. And yes, the baby is already being exposed to his dad’s culinary skills. “It’s been a lot of morning cooking—he’ll sit while we’re doing omelets,” Samuelsson says. “I can’t wait for him to actually help out in the kitchen.” —ANA CALDERONE PEOPLE November 21, 2016

THE VETERAN ACTOR, 71, STARS IN THE NEW NETFLIX SERIES THE CROWN

Last perfect day off We shot The Crown last year in London, and my wife [Mary Yeager] joined me. There were 150 or so shooting days and I only worked about 50 of them, so I had, like, 100 glorious days off when I was supposedly working.

Last time I was moved to tears Sunday morning my wife and I went to see Queen of Katwe. Oh my God, take an entire box of Kleenex! It was tears of sadness and joy and the most unexpected things. I went right home and slept for two hours. It was brilliant.

Last recurring dream The tormenting one of having to play a part and I’ve forgotten the lines. Or reading the script but I don’t have my glasses. Initially you wake up in a total panic, and then you’re relieved and curse yourself for being an actor.
