Photomontage of the site : the « Place de la Pointe » in Pantin

The choice of the location was free : the only restriction we had to take into account was that there had to be a physical, visual or historical relation with the Ourcq canal. With my partner, we strategically decided to set up in the center of the new ZAC of Pantin. From now to 2020, this zone is planned to welcome more than 600 apartments, many offices and businesses and also a school. The “Place de la Pointe” is the key place of the transformation of the abandoned industrial and port zone of Pantin. At a larger scale, it is part of a project of urban rehabilitation of the Ourcq canal. One of our principal goals was to see the

canal as a support and not as an obstacle. That is the reason why we quickly turned towards the creation of a “building-bridge”. We also wanted our edifice to go further than just a library. We wanted it to be a meeting and connection point between people and the different activities from both sides of the canal. This new cultural complex, was also to become a new dynamic public area. The library is made of a lone volume completely opened, because of our willingness to create a continuity of the public area throughout our project. The floor differences, as well as the disposition of the equipments, allow a distinction between the proper functions of a library.

The library is built on three levels : the ground floor, an intermediate floor at 2,5 m of height, and the higher floor, at 5 m above the ground. This higher level enables the boats to pass behind the library, where it crosses the canal. Moreover, an independent footbridge allow the citizens to cross the canal both day and night. As the location was larger than the physical limits of the “Place de la Pointe, we decided to virtually apply a triangular network on the zone we thought it was pertinent to work in. Then we methodically awarded a specific function for each of the three directions of the

network, which allowed us to demarcate our intervention. One of the three directions is about the structure : great metal crossbars makes it possible to cross the canal, another direction is dedicated to the windows (the working and reading areas are mostly facing north to get a constant and diffuse light whereas the access ramps that connect the floor between them are systematically facing south). Finally, the last direction is the one of the equipments (rooms, bookshelves or even restrooms). Together, these three directions allowed us to build the different spaces of our project.

Exhibition Spaces on Swan Island

along with Patrick Cairoli Luis Burriel Bielsa September 2016 / January 2017

16

Swan Island (L’île aux Cygnes) is 800 meters long and 15 meters large only. It is located in the middle of “La Seine”) between the 15th and 16th district of Paris. Its dimensions as well as its location make this island very atypical. The choice of the project was free. We, Patrick and I, immediately thought about an exhibition place. Effectively, the physical disconnection with the density of the city that exists on this island, and the connection the island has with water are factors that are favorable to reflection and contemplation. We could not only set up on just one part of the island, we wanted to use the totality of the location that was usable. That is the reason why we tried to elaborate spaces capable of answering structural and constructive issues. We also had to take into account the different facilities and to adapt themselves to the location specifics.

The repetitive rythm of the trees together with the changing atmospheres due the density of the trees foliage have been a major source of inspiration in the conception of our project. A principal axis which responds the path on the island crosses our intervention entirely and links all the areas of our project between them. This axis is the real backbone of our project. Thanks to this constructive system with multiple combinations, we were able to compose the project taking into account the requirements of our program and the spaces we wanted to create, while respecting the location and adapting ourselves to the physical, visual, and sensory characteristics of the island. House and Workshop for an Artist in Vilafamés

along with Diego Casal Lorenzo Eduard Gascón February 2016 / June 2016

26

The small town of VilafamĂŠs, located near Valencia in Spain is distinguished by its small houses. These houses are very close to one another, which creates a disorganized network of narrow and winding ways. One of the objectives of our project was to clarify the public and private spaces while bringing a little bit of air in this urban density. Another important data that we had to take into account for the conception

of our project was the strong slope of the site. We had to imagine a kind of little artistic complex including the house and the workshop of an artist on one side and a student residence for 5 apprentice workers who will work with the artist on the other side. The affirmation of some public spaces as well as the clarification of the topography gave birth to new public places.

The new place located in front of the principal entrance of the church allow the latter to be highlighted. It is also around this place that the major part of the activities linked to the artist and its students will take place (workshop, common spaces, student residence‌). This little place that looks like a cloister can be used as an exterior exhibition space. Only the classroom is not on this place, this way

it benefits from an isolation favorable to focus. Its location on the site guarantees an impressive view that overlook the whole valley. As the artist will be the core of this new complex, his house will be at the center of our project. In our approach, we wanted to keep and to reuse elements that already exist such as the stone walls, symbol of VilafamĂŠs.

Analysis of F.L.Wright’s Suntop Homes

along with Alice Baslé Nicolas André September 2014 / November 2014

36

The Suntop Homes were created in 1938, not far from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally, Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to create four identical houses with different orientations. After the realization of the first house, citizens from the neighborhood expressed discontent regarding the three houses that were still to be built (see the model below). Four independent houses of 120 square meters each, developing themselves across 4 different levels hinge on a common cruciform loadbearing wall. Each house represents one quarter of what, at first sight, looks like one big house (see the Rotring hand-redesigned plan and cross-section). They were principally built of brick and wood, cheap materials for cheap habitations.

Frank Lloyd Wright was convinced that his project would be a success and even proposed to the US government in 1942, a variation of Suntop Homes called Cloverleaf. This project was composed of around a hundred houses built upon the same principle : four houses in one. The whole project was to make a small town very well organized (see the model above). Unfortunately, the Cloverleaf project never saw the light of day. Proposal of extension of the terrace (pieces of software used : Google Sketchup, Cinema 4D, Photoshop)

As part of the “Wood Workshop proposed by our school, we imagined and created this friendly wooden space capable of receiving around twenty people. This wooden space takes center stage in the schoolyard and is used everyday.

There is a proposal of an arrangement of the roof of one of the buildings of the ENSA-PB. The idea consists in creating a kind of participative vegetable garden for our school. The negotiations are in progress with the school administration to see if this project is feasible.
