Hello
My name is Hugo, am 25 years old. was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Belfast, London, and Stockholm before moving to Gothenburg. In my portfolio, plan to show my progress throughout my education through seven key projects. will begin with my senior year research project from gymnasium, and end with my Bachelor Thesis Project. Throughout my education, have developed a skill set of methodologies to visualize my ideas. In addition, have been driven by curiosity to explore my objects of interest within architecture, whether they take form as an architectural period, biology, a tectonic expression, or building material. My pursuit to explore different facets of architecture plays a key role in my intention, inspiration, and decisionmaking while broadening my understanding of different building typologies and scales.

My journey in architecture began when I was fifteen. It was during a day-long family trip to Barcelona that had my first architectural epiphany—seeing Casa Batlló, a mosaic of symbolism and natureinspired shapes. The colourful facade and the eclectic interior design made me think that this is where nature, science, history and beauty intersect. This inspired me to pursue a career in architecture. When it was time to decide on a topic for my final research project in Gymnasium (equivalent of GCSE exam), decided that I wanted to design a Guadí-inspired apartment building. would create my natureinspired vocabulary of shapes and forms. In the beginning, this being my first architectural project, did not know where to start.
The project is set on a corner within Barcelona’s gridded city blocks, I began by gathering inspiration, and skimming through Gaudí’s
projects before I started drawing the facade. wanted a lighthouse to serve as a stairwell and become the most imposing feature of the building. was inspired by the skeletons of different animals— the lighthouse was inspired by the snake skeleton, the top of the lighthouse by the jellyfish, and the pillars by the human spine, just to mention a few. Throughout the year worked on the project, the plans evolved naturally out of the facades and the creation of the appropriate sculptural effects. Because my framework for the project was vague to begin with, the project was never entirely finished. The material presented was made by hand, consisting of freehand sketches and blueprints as well as a short essay. As my introduction to architecture, this project taught me how to work within a spatial framework, as well as how to draw inspiration from unlikely places.

Type Place Proposal Hiking shelter
I n 1865, a blue whale washed up on the shores of Gothenburg’s coast and was mounted on display in the Naturhistoriskamuseet of Gothenburg. On a small, barren island on Sweden’s west coast lies an abandoned granite quarry, about a thirty-minute hike from the remote island village Bohus-Malmön. Located here, and inspired by the whale of 1865, my structure consists of a wooden footbridge, connecting the roofed fireplace and the sleeping quarters, hung with derricks that allow the capsule to gently swing—as if in the belly of a swimming whale.
During my years in gymnasium and art school, I developed skillsets in sketching and

drafting. Therefore, for my first project in architecture school, I put emphasis on the sketching phase. My introduction to learning about Gothenburg’s history was reading about the whale that washed up in 1865, so that became the project’s inspiration. As in the previous project, created my own interpretation of the anatomy of the whale through an arrangement of structural systems—for example, the trusses carrying the shelter resemble a ribcage, which is shown in the building model. Over time, a narrative evolved about a whale stranded on the beach, reappearing after the ice age and later being transformed into a shelter during the Migration Period.

HERMIT
Recreational Delsjön | Gothenburg School project
I n this project, had the opportunity to improve my drafting and modelmaking skills. The focus of the project was to design a sauna including yoga facilities. As shown in the previous project, combined tectonic expressions in my designs, which proved to be more difficult because the program of the project was more complicated. found inspiration in Japanese architecture, which outwardly displays its structure and allows ample flexibility through moveable partitions. Similar to Japanese architecture, the building has an opening in its center, as well as columns within a gridded system. The shape of the building is inspired by the Hermit crab crawling onto land, which gave the
building its name and inspired the reclusive character of the building.
The sauna is situated in a pine forest on a small peninsula, about thirty minutes from Gothenburg’s city center. Inspired by old Japanese ceremonial buildings, the structure has an extended thatched reed roof covering its wooden entirety. Like old Japanese homes, the rooms are connected by roofed passageways with closelyplaced pillars, which allow sunlight to enter without exposing inhabitants to passersby. The structure can be reconfigured within the gridded plan or repurposed somewhere else, consistent with the project’s philosophy of impermanence.

HERRING-BRIDGE
Group project Bridge Gothenburg Competition
Malin Broberg, Myrra Carlsson, Elin Edstam, Carl Johansson, Shaher Kawaf, Linnea Niklasson, Carl Rajala Pettersson, Kajsa Stern
S imilar to the previous projects, this design is reminiscent of a sea creature.
I had the opportunity to work with eight other people, including three engineers, who gave me insight into working in large groups on small projects.
After made the first draft of the bridge, which later became our poster, we made a model in scale 1:50 to test the structure.
We later spent a weekend building the 13-meter-long bridge scale 1:1 on Chalmers
campus, competing against four other bridges. Our bridge won the popular votes of the audience. The bridge’s shape is inspired by the common fish, served during holiday festivities in Sweden. The design can be summarised in three parts; “The Artery”, which allows the flow of people across the canal, “The Spine and Ribs”, which counter bending moment, “The Support” or “Fins”, which raises the bridge from the ground.

Project Hiking shelter
When Chalmers announced the competition for architecture students to design a hiking shelter within 3 x 3 x 3 meters, took the opportunity to try SketchUp and Twinmotion for the first time. enjoyed experimenting with new visual presentations, and found that was able to take my subsequent projects to a completely different level. The shelter is hanging in a tree in the forest, glowing in the dark. It is not far from Chalmers Recreational Building, open for students to visit from Gothenburg. The walls are made of wooden joists clad in white greenhouse film, providing relative thermal comfort in

negative degrees while emitting light from the walls. The floor and bunk are made of plywood. The construction is attached to the tree with German tree screws.
To enter the shelter three meters up, visitors must climb a ladder and slide the door aside. Inside, a window screen can be opened to see the view overlooking the Chalmers sauna and Lake Sandsjön. The shelter was inspired by Japanese tea houses, simple small separate structures clad in rice paper where people sit on mats and perform rituals of drinking tea.
LANTERNA
Type Place Proposal Office & Foodcourt Gothenburg city center School project
I n this project, what contended with most was working within limits: Swedish building codes, zoning regulations, the complexity of the given program and the structure. This inspired me to be more creative in designing quality office spaces concerning lighting and usable floor space. The project also included a more extensive list of submission requirements than in the previous courses, including more detailed drawings. Working efficiently with 3D modeling programs, which had practiced in the previous
project, helped structure the complex building program.
This building is situated close to Gothenburg’s city center, and is part of a larger urbanization effort to develop housing and office structures on Gothenburg’s waterfront. The area below the project site offers Gothenburg’s most buzzing nightlife scene. The height makes this building stand out in the city skyline, as seen in the illustration below. The name, ”Lanterna”, refers to a boat’s signal lights—a dedication to Gothenburg’s history as a seafaring city.

The “client” for this project, the company Green Logistics, requests an office building and food market with an entirely load bearing CLT structure. The building consists of a two story open food market on the bottom and office spaces on the top nine floors.
The CLT-structure is covered in glassblocks, reminiscent of the surrounding brick architecture. This provides light quality throughout the entire structure for comfortable office space. The building has roofed yards with three-story-high openings on every floor.

Proposal Library
T he library is situated in a bay within a larger city planning thesis project, in an area located by Göta älv in Gothenburg. The concept is for a local library, consisting of three floors with a large gallery in the center.
The building is clad in two layers of double-paned glass with one meter between, allowing air to flow naturally between the layers. This will help keep the building cool during the summer, and during the winter will serve as an insulator. In the building’s gallery, light

falls in from a grid of skylights. The inner walls are made of semi-transparent thin marble, reminiscent of old wrinkled paper.
Every floor of the building has been thoughtfully considered, and is designed for different purposes and experiences. The first level includes the gallery—a flexible, multipurpose area. The bottom floor, being the loudest, is an effective communal space.
The second level is designed for courses and discourse to take place. Finally, the third floor is designated for quiet study.
