Museum offers many points of interest Looking for something to do in Stevens County? A great starting point is the Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum. This local institution celebrated 50 years of sharing history with locals and out-of-towners alike May 16, 2011. Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum opened its doors May 16, 1961. The first curator Helen Phaff served the community as curator for several years. The Museum has continued to expand over the years to the point of occupying nearly an entire city block. Included on the grounds are the Museum itself, a schoolhouse, a furnished house, a church, a gas station, a train depot, an outbuilding containing historic vehicles and farm implements and a walking track. Visitors to the Museum can view a variety of exhibits, from a collection of pencil sharpeners to a working model of an oil rig. Feel as if you’ve traveled back in time by viewing the countless historical artifacts or imagine you’ve traveled to space as you look at the meteorite from March 1935. Whatever your interests, curator Gladys Renfro and assistant curator Beulah Mae Carter will be pleased to make your visit to Stevens County Gas
and Historical Museum something to remember! The Museum is located at 905 S. Adams and is open in the summer from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays. In the winter, they are open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays. You may also call 620-5448751 for more information.

The Hugoton Hermes has served area for 126 years The Hugoton Hermes began publication in 1887, under publisher C.M. Davis. The first issue was published August 4, 1887. Over the past 126 years, The Hermes has changed hands numerous times and is now, since 2007, is co-owned by RoGlenda Coulter, Kay McDaniels and Ruthie Winget of Faith Publishing, LLC.
Since 1887, The Hugoton Hermes has been the official newspaper of Stevens County and has served the communities of Hugoton, Moscow and Rolla with news coverage, sports, advertising and classifieds. A web site was launched in March of 2012. The Hermes provides news for local residents as well as many who live out

of state. The newspaper office is a hubbub of activity, where a weekly publication is the core product. A full range of office supplies is also available, from rubber bands and paper clips to specialty papers and organizational helps. The Hermes’ deadline is Monday at 5:00 p.m. Obituaries, engagement, wedding and birth announcements run
free of charge. This also includes a color picture if you so desire. Bring your news, your pictures and your special office supply needs to the office at 522 S. Main, and the ladies there will be more than happy to help! You can also call 620-544-4321 or email hermes10@pld.com for more information.

Stevens County features various clubs and organizations Stevens County certainly doesn’t have a shortage of clubs and organizations to meet needs and expand interests of almost every resident. Below are listed meeting times and other information. Alcoholics Anonymous Call 620-544-8633 for information. Al-Anon Men and women of alcoholic families and friends meet at 1405 Cemetery Road Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. Call 544-2610 or 544-2854 for more information. American Legion Auxiliary The Auxiliary meets every second Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Hedy Lairmore. The organization also hosts covered dish dinners in March, October and December. They are always seeking more members. You must be related to an American Legion member to join. Celebrate Life Celebrate Life Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Assembly of God, 138 S. Main. Visitors are asked to park in the back lot. Dust Bowl Riders Dust Bowl Riders was founded in 1991 to help raise money for medical expenses of Brian Lamberson, son of Terry and Linda Lamberson. passed away, Terry and Linda requested the club turn their tragedy into something positive for the community. The Riders certainly contribute positively to the community, by donating half the proceeds of the very popular and growing Brian Lamberson Memorial Motorcycle Rally to the community and half to college-bound seniors in scholarships. The Riders also give their time and resources as they ride with the Patriot Guard in honor of those who have served the United States in the military. CSB offers community banking since 1913 Longing for the days when financial institutions actually cared about their customers instead of the bottom line? Reading the latest headlines about financial crises, you might feel a little nostalgic for days gone by, when you genuinely trusted an institution with your hard-earned dollars. Citizens State Bank in Hugoton celebrated 100 years in business April 1, 2013. Though technology has advanced, their core mission hasn’t. CSB’s board of directors met for the first time January 18, 1913 and set out to offer the people of Stevens County a safe place to deposit their money and conduct business. Main Street was composed of dirt and a few wooden storefronts. In 1925, CSB and its staff moved into a brick building. The rest, as they say, is history. Though Citizens has incorporated the ever-present Web into their business dealings, they've never lost their "hometown" feel. Every Fourth of July, CSB employees defy the heat and face the inevitable crowds at Hugoton's annual Park Day. Whether manning the bean bag toss or sponsoring the relay races, you're sure to find CSB at the City Park July 4. Every August, employees don aprons and grab spoons to
dole out pulled pork, sausage and all the fixings at the Stevens County Fair for the annual Friday Night Barbecue. During football season, you can stop by Hugoton High's parking lot for a free burger at the yearly CSB Tailgate Party. CSB also purchased the scoreboards for the high school football field, the high school gym, and the Hugoton Recreation Commission scoreboard. Digital signs featuring time, temperature and important school events were installed at both Hugoton Elementary and the parking lot of Hugoton Middle and High Schools thanks to CSB. Don't think the bankers forget the immensely important agricultural side of Stevens County; every year the bank sponsors the Stevens County Conservation District banquet in February. As you enter the lobby of Citizens State Bank today, you’ll still notice a smalltown atmosphere, and you’ll most likely receive some heartfelt smiles. The location is the same as in 1925 - although it's now quite a bit bigger. A far cry from the wooden storefront of 1913, CSB now boasts two front doors, a twolane driveup, two ATMs and online banking. Hugoton's local bank truly is "community minded" and that's just how their customers like it.

Stevens County Library will be a century old next year Stevens County definitely has an ace up its sleeve when it comes to entertainment in their Library at 500 S. Monroe. The Stevens County Library opened in 1914, with volunteers at the helm. SCL will turn 100 years old next year, and members of the staff have lived up to their promise “Your Information Source” for all those years. Hugoton’s Senior Center offers place of enjoyment and relaxation for older adults Hugoton's Senior Center is a jewel of the community, offering activities as well as the crucial service of Meals on Wheels for seniors. Events include dances, card games, exercises, line dancing and even a painting group. The Senior Center began around 1979. Participants met at the VFW Hall until Earl Hutton donated the Hutton Civic Center specifically for the Senior Center's use in 1984. The people of the Center didn't waste any time, starting the Meals on Wheels shortly after the move. This service continues today, and serves around 25-30 seniors. In 1992, Stevens County Commissioners bought the adjoining building to expand the Center. Volunteers remodeled the area, which would become known as the Activity Center. This area now boasts handicap accessible restrooms, an office, craft room, a pool room, a small kitchen and a large meeting room. The large meeting room has housed meetings, family gatherings and other events.
In January of 2000, the Senior Center no longer required any State or Federal funds. At that time, approximately 25 to 30 seniors attended the lunch meal. Current attendance for lunch has increased to nearly 80 today. Current staff includes Loretta Woodworth, head cook; Debbie Mueller, ascook; Billy Woodworth, sistant part-time winter help; Nicole Kinser, part-time summer help; and Marsha Campbell delivers meals and picks up patrons. Barbara Beeks serves as Senior Center Director. A Senior Center is defined as a "community focal point on aging where older adults come together for services and activities that reflect their experience and skills, respond to their diverse needs and interests, enhance their dignity, support their independence, and encourage their involvement in and with the center and the community." Stevens County Hospital offers “Healthcare for the Heartland” Stevens County Healthcare is one of the proudest testaments to Hugoton’s growth in the past 63 years. The facility at 1006 S. Main was revamped in 2000 and now contains 25 certified beds, an ER unit, laboratory, a medical clinic with visiting specialists, and Stevens County Retail Pharmacy. They also offer respiratory therapy, physical therapy, home oxygen and medical equipment, a home health agency, nuclear medicine and cardiac rehabilitation. SCH is currently in the process of updating their mammography. Stevens County Hospital’s Pioneer Manor is a brand new state-of-the-art facility containing 83 beds. Services offered include 24 hour professional nursing, physical therapy, activities
and social services. The Manor also boasts an Alzheimer’s wing and resident-centered care. The Stevens County Retail Pharmacy was established in 2011 and offers prescriptions, refills and over-the-counter remedies. In-county delivery of prescriptions is offered free of charge for those who can’t get out and about easily. The Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. They are also open Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Main. “The Jet” has been a fixture of downtown Hugoton since the late 1950s or early 1960s, when it was owned by Bob McBride. George and Lana Slocum purchased the Jet April 24, 1978, and it’s been a family affair ever since. Hugoton Recreation Commission can cater to most of your fitness needs! The HRC offers a multitude of activities, including youth sports, open gym, coed leagues and more. STEVENS COUNTY HOSPITAL/ PIONEER MANOR The Stevens County Hospital and Pioneer Manor Board of Directors meet the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Stevens County Hospital’s Community Room. Board members include Warren Willis, Milton Gillespie, Kirk Heger, Dean Van Horn, Keith Rome and Patty Lahey. Pheasant Heaven Charities, Inc. helps families in need and offers scholarships Pheasant Heaven Charities, Inc. was formed as a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money through various fundraisers for the purpose of helping organizations and charities throughout the southwest Kansas area. The organization’s main fundraising event takes place the evening before the opening day of pheasant season. This event is hosted right here in Hugoton, the county seat of Stevens County. Hugoton has a population of 3,100 with an extended rural population of approximately 5,000. Since 2004, Pheasant Heaven Charities, Inc. - along with those involved prior to forming the non-profit group - has
raised more than $1,000,000 and donated it all back to local charities, individuals in need, and civic groups as well as establishing a high school scholarship program. The 2012 fundraiser/calf fry fed approximately 1200 guests 600 pounds of pork, 800 pounds of calf fries and 600 pounds of beef, along with all of the “fixins.” At this event, drawings took place for various shotguns and other hunting gear along with an auction featuring a variety of donated items including signed artwork. Each event promotes the sale of year-specific items such as caps and t-shirts in order to maximize available dollars. Pheasant Heaven partner numbers

have increased dramatically each year for the past six years; beginning in 2006 with nine partners, growing to 18 partners in 2007, reaching 36 partners in 2008, ending 2009 with 67 partners, reaching 105 partners for 2010, a whopping 127 partners in 2011, and finally a total of 139 in 2012. By virtue of the generosity of the community, partners, and guests attending the annual event, PHCI reached a milestone in 2012 with over $1,000,000 raised since 2004. Through these efforts PHCI will be able to fund their scholarship committee, granting scholarships to graduating high school seniors within a 50 mile radius of Hugoton; continue to support a favorite charity with donations to St. Catherine’s Hospice; fund a benevolent committee to anonymously care for
smaller area needs, with revenue remaining available for community emergencies. In addition to the hard work of PHCI’s partners, hosting an event of this magnitude takes an incredible amount of effort and manpower, with over 150 volunteers needed to clean calf fries, cook and serve, as well as countless hours donated by others to organize and promote this event. There are no paid positions in this organization. Rolla turns 100 years old

Moscow residents celebrate their town’s centennial Moscow, Kansas, was founded in 1913 and will celebrate 100 years of townhood this year. Citizens number approximately 310, according to the 2010 census. The town is nestled among fields of wheat and corn and boasts excellent pheasant hunting. Visitors to Moscow will likely be pleasantly surprised at its residents’ friendly manners and small-town camaraderie. Pop into Antler’s Bar and Grill for a quick bite or a “night on the town”. Stop by The Store to grab some refreshments - and the latest gossip.
Get a new hairstyle at Curly Tops Salon. Relive memories by visiting with patrons of the Moscow Senior Center or cool off at the swimming pool. The Moscow Recreation Commission offers lots of activities as well. Two churches call Moscow home: Moscow Baptist and Moscow United Methodist. Moscow is also home to USD #209. Rolla lies about 16 miles west of Hugoton and 16 miles east of Elkhart on Highway 56. The town is celebrating its centennial this year. There are approximately 450 residents in town. Nearly every one of them believes Rolla is a very special place to call home. If you’re in town and feeling a little hungry, grab a bite at Charro’s, Archuleta’s Burracos & Catering or at Rolla Corner Stop. You can also tend to business at the First National Bank of Elkhart’s Rolla branch. You can take a dip in the Rolla Swimming Pool or take
in a baseball or softball game at Rolla Recreation’s ball field. From September to early May, you can skate your cares away at the Rolla Skating Rink, 311 Washington. When Sunday comes around, you can worship at the United Methodist Church, Emmanuel Baptist or Pentecostal Holiness churches.
