Stevens County Library celebrates 100 years of service to community The first mention of a library for Stevens County comes from a women's club meeting in July 1914. A permanent home for the Stevens County Library was first constructed 20 years later—a round adobe building at the corner of Fifth and Monroe streets. The facility was remodeled in 1953 and housed the library until 1961, when it was razed and the collection moved into a new building. This new building had 3,200 square feet of space and included an outdoor patio and rose garden. In 1976, the rose garden was enclosed to create the Kansas Room. Unfortu-
nately, in February 1981, a small fire broke out in the book drop area, causing the SCL to close for two weeks to clean, repaint and restore the collection. In 1985, another 3,300 square feet were added to the Library's floor space. Then, in 1999, due to increased patrons and activities, the SCL built their largest addition yet—an impressive 7,441 square feet for a total area of 13,982 square feet. The Stevens County Library is open an average of 62 hours every week throughout the year. In 2013, the SCL circulated 103,080 items to 169,478 patrons, provided online services to 104,467 patrons
and made possible 17,192 hours of computer lab and wireless access. In July 2014, the Stevens County Library will celebrate 100 years of service to Stevens County and the surrounding area. Throughout the week of July 7-11, historical information will be displayed. Tuesday, July 8, they will celebrate with a birthday party during children’s Story-
time. Friday, July 11, the SCL will host a come and go reception from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. complete with refreshments and giveaways. You are invited to visit the Stevens County Library at 500 S. Monroe, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

Physical Therapy enjoys new location Stevens County Healthcare’s Physical Therapy Department is enjoying their new spacious location at 525 S. Polk. They offer outpatient therapy, Stevens County Hospital inpatient therapy, home health services in three counties, school-based therapy, postoperative therapy and therapy for Pioneer Manor residents. Last year, the Physical Therapy department served 655 patients over 4,004 individual visits, with only two employees: Physical Therapist Megan Sullivan and Physical Therapist Assistant Jeff Beard. In December, they added Mariela Gonzales, Physical Ther-
apy Tech, and in May, Physical Therapist Beau Rapp joined the staff. Since January 2014, they've helped 294 different patients and are excited to expand their service even more. Stevens County Physical Therapy is open from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday and from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. They also see patients over the noon hour by appointment. Megan reported the facility and staff are equipped to help with work-related injuries, chronic and overuse injuries, sports injuries and even pediatric patients. Call 620-544-7823 with any questions.
Project Hope moves to 1042 S. Jackson Project Hope moved into their new abode at 1042 S. Jackson in June 2014. They are open from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Basic food items are available for Stevens County residents who are in need. Those requesting assistance are usually required to prove residency by showing their electricity bill. Stevens County Health Department moves to 505 S. Polk Stevens County Health Department recently moved into a new location at 505 S. Polk. They offer numerous services to the public including WIC, immunizations, public transportation, children's daycare physicals, school physicals, daycare licensing, vaccina-
tions for travel and lab services for uninsured and underinsured patients. The Health Department also offers chronic disease management classes and diabetes management classes. Employees at the Health Department are Trista Panjwani, RN, who

Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum offers great family entertainment Looking for something to do in Stevens County? A great starting point is the Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum. This local institution celebrated 50 years of sharing history with locals and out-of-towners alike May 16, 2011. Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum opened its doors May 16, 1961. The first curator Helen Phaff served the community as curator for several years. The Museum has continued to expand over the years to the point of occupying nearly an entire city block. Included on the grounds are the Museum itself, a schoolhouse, a furnished house, a church, a gas station, a train depot, an outbuilding containing historic vehicles and farm implements and a walking track. Visitors to the Museum can view a variety of exhibits, from a collection of
pencil sharpeners to a working model of an oil rig. Feel as if you’ve traveled back in time by viewing the countless historical artifacts or imagine you’ve traveled to space as you look at the meteorite from March 1935. Whatever your interests, any or all of the Museum’s employees will be pleased to make your visit to Stevens County Gas and Historical Museum something to remember! The Museum is located at 905 S. Adams and is open in the summer from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturdays. They process over one million pounds of milk per day and hope to expand to 2.5 million pounds per day eventually. KDI removes the excess water from milk trucked in by local dairies, then send the concentrated dairy product to Kraft Foods in Springfield, Mo. Kansas Dairy Ingredients employs
approximately 60 people and was recognized as a Business Appreciation Regional winner in June 2014 after being nominated by Stevens County Economic Development. Kansas Dairy Ingredients has provided local jobs and diversified the local economy, changing the tax base from almost exclusively oil and gas.

Ruth Van Horn finishes first year as Hugoton Area Chamber Director Ruth Van Horn is the Hugoton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. She and her husband Dean moved to Hugoton in August 2009. Ruth has served the community as Chamber Director since July 2013. Ruth's first event as Chamber director was one of the "biggies"—the Stevens County Fair Parade. Fortunately, Ruth has proven herself an excellent Chamber director over and over at numerous events. In less than a year, Ruth has organized many events such as a Teachers Appreciation breakfast at the beginning

of the school year, a Spook Parade down Main Street for Halloween with over 400 participants, a Grocery Grab, Legislative Updates with U.S. and Kansas congressmen and senators, the annual Chamber Banquet in April, a Biking Across Kansas support booth and five ribbon cuttings for new area businesses. The Chamber also provides the grand prize of 50 Chamber Bucks for the Sweetheart Sweepstakes winners and the Super Mom and Super Dad winners each year. Ruth provides a weekly newsletter for all Chamber members detailing accomplishments and upcoming events. She also updates the stevenscoks.com Web site for both the Chamber and Stevens County Economic Development. Ruth relates, "It's amazing how many people make the Chamber their first call!" The Hugoton Area Chamber of Commerce is also a member of the Southwest Kansas Chamber of Commerce, so Ruth works with directors of other local Chambers to help promote the concerns of area communities. The Hugoton Chamber has 84 members currently, and Ruth encourages any local businesses who aren't members to join in order to promote Hugoton and Stevens County. You can contact

Hugoton’s convenience stores announce changes Express Lane at 520 E. Eleventh in Hugoton recently underwent an impressive facelift. They added a shiny new storefront, a few more square feet and a convenient drive-thru earlier this year. The convenience store is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. They sell candy, drinks, convenience items, lottery tickets and more. Fortunately, everything except lottery tickets and 30 packs of beer are available to order in the drive-thru.
Two of Express Lane's newest offerings are F'real milkshakes and Hunts Brothers pizzas. Call 620-544-4848 to order a pie with any number of toppings before 9:00 p.m. Another new installment is Willie's Cashbox, where you can pay bills and buy money orders from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Hugoton's other convenience store, Presto, at 1000 S. Main, also offers snacks, drinks and convenience items. They started staying open 24 hours a day in February 2014.

Caring Connections, LLC offers childcare solution for busy parents Caring Connections, LLC started operation in January 2014. After only a few months, the facility is caring for approximately 40 children and has the capacity to care for 75. Caring Connections offers child care for children from two weeks old to 12 years. They also offer a preschool class for three year olds. Classes are divided by age: infants, younger toddlers, older

Hugoton Recreation Commission offers fun for the whole family If you like to play sports, you've come to the right place! Hugoton Recreation Commission can cater to most of your fitness needs! The HRC offers a multitude of activities, including youth sports, open gym, coed leagues and more. The HRC started many years ago as a single building. Since that time, they've expanded to include a large new office and reception area, an impressive gym and the Robert Sosa Activity Center. Employees and volunteers number in the dozens and HRC-sponsored events are numerous. From church league volleyball to Babe Ruth baseball, from weight loss competitions to dance class for preschoolers - the Rec has what you're looking for!
The HRC also hosts a bevy of activity options in the summer for youth, including swimming lessons, archery, tennis, tee ball, baseball, softball, Zumba, dance, sports camps, ceramics, golf and Blast Ball. The organization also operates the Hugoton City Pool, offering Red Cross certified lifeguards to teach swimming lessons and watch over swimmers young and old. For an evening of fun—and maybe a few nailbiting contests—in the summer time, stop by one of the Rec’s ball fields to watch a great game of baseball, softball, tee ball or Blast ball. STEVENS COUNTY HOSPITAL/ PIONEER MANOR The Stevens County Hospital and Pioneer Manor Board of Directors meet the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the Stevens County Hospital’s Community Room. Board members include Warren Willis, Joyce Baughman, Milton Gillespie, Kirk Heger, Dean Van Horn, Keith Rome and Patty Lahey.
