A TOUCH OF HISTORY In 1913 When the Citizens State Bank was organized ...the first board of directors included president E. W. Joslin, Chas. Summers, Lee Larrabee, J. A. Christopher, R. M. Crawford, John A. Firmin and R. T. Beaty. The bank stockholders included J. A. Gregory, I. A. Stoner, J. E. Bane, D. C. Bane, Richard Joyce, J. F. Parsons, N. C. Mason, J. C. Mason, A.E. Asher and Frank Summers. When the Citizens State Bank opened it was staffed by Joslin and cashier W. H. Huffman.

The original brick building at Sixth and Main was dedicated in 1925. The ceremony took place May 2 and included local talent performing musical numbers and a one act playlet.

A Portion Of The New Bank Building Is On The Original Location. The Citizens State Bank first conducted business in April of 1913 in a new building that was described in an early Hermes account as being, “just south of the Hamby Hotel”. The Hamby Hotel location is now 25 feet to the north of the current Citizens State Bank building. The bank expanded into that location on its twelfth anniversary. The Hamby Hotel reportedly “. . .was moved behind the Porter Drug Building across the street to the north.”

In 1935 CSB assumed the deposits of Hugoton First National Bank and in 1937, CSB merged with Moscow State Bank.

This photo was taken in 1938 after the bank merger of Moscow State Bank and Citizens State Bank. Pictured left to right are Sam Gish, vice-president; T. A. Dudley, cashier; Eva Spurgeon, assistant cashier; and Emmett Reardon, assistant cashier. T. A. Dudley had served as cashier for MSB, and both he and Eva Spurgeon served on the MSB Board of Directors. Emmett Reardon had been assistant cashier at MSB prior to moving to CSB. Sam Gish had been an officer at CSB before the merger.

The employees gather for a group picture during the bank’s open house in 1966. The bank more than doubled ground floor space, provided loan offices with more privacy, and introduced customers to the driveup window. From the left are Loubell Campbell, Emmett and Harriet Reardon, T. A. Dudley, Mary Young, Betty Lee, Pauline Crawford, Millie McCoy, Nora Swafford, Joan Shotton, Imagene Wahlmeier and Gladys Sims.

Bank Size Doubles In 1966 an addition was added to the south of the original bank building. The addition doubled the size of the bank. At that time Dudley was the president, Reardon was the cashier and Walter Young was the assistant cashier. Young became president of the Citizens State Bank in 1975. Dudley continued to serve as an active officer of the bank until his death April 1, 1983. Reardon retired from the bank as a vice president in 1974. In celebration of 75 years of service in Stevens County, Citizens State Bank hosted an open house in 1988. Pictured from the left are Walter Young, Ruth Dudley, Mary Young, Harriet Reardon, Emmett Reardon and Mildred McCoy.
