Local reader alerts others of scam tricks The Hermes was visited by a local reader this past week who was nearly the victim of a costly scam! The reader was called by a “representative” of Publisher’s Clearing House, who informed her she had won $2.7 million. What a surprise! The representative said he would bring the check to her, but first she had to load a prepaid debit card with $500, and he would be getting back with her to pick it up. He supposedly needed the funds to possibly buy celebratory champagne and roses, as well as gas to get to Hugoton. Another red flag? The representative told her not to tell anyone she was loading the card to pay for the celebration. Fortunately, Hermes readers are fairly bright, and she called Sheriff Ted Heaton and her attorney to report this not-so-obvious scam. The fake PCH representative informed her he would be calling her back when she got the card so he could come by
and pick it up. At this point, the victim was understandably frightened. After talking to the sheriff and her lawyer, the reader let her daughter come stay with her. When the representative called back, she told him she was going to have to decline his request. At this point, she reports the faux representative became verbally abusive. She also stated she had received an unusual check for $500 in the mail a few months ago. When she called to find out why she had gotten the check, a different “PCH representative” told her the check was for traveling expenses to bring her a “huge cash prize”. She took the check to the bank, where she found out the bank where the check was drawn had been foreclosed several years ago. Luckily for this particular reader, her investigative skills saved her money and lots of aggravation. She said she was told some other victims in town were not so lucky.
It was also reported the “representative” could possibly be posing as an FSA Agent with your farm payment. They would require your social security number and other private information for you to be able to receive your check. DO NOT give out any personal information such as Social Security number, bank accounts, credit card numbers or other financial

School Board Continued from page 1 on their growth targets in math, English and science for the 2013-2014 school year. She spoke about the district’s assessment plan. Pre-K through second grade will continue to use AIMS, local assessments and Star testing. Third through sixth grades will use AIMS, MAP and Aspire Interims testing. Seventh through tenth grade will use MAP and Aspire summative testing and eleventh grade will use MAP, ACT and local assessment. Superintendent Crawford talked about the Common Core and what the school would do if it was to be taken away. The district’s goals are to get students career and college ready. KU is still building a new assessment for next year. Mark also informed the board the first two innovative coalition school districts - McPherson and Concordia - were approved by the State Board of Education by a 10-0 vote. Year-end budget amounts and transfers/Budget for 20142015 were discussed. The Student and Staff Handbooks from each building are ready for the first read-through. Sale options for seven used route buses were also discussed. The board approved the pro-
jected assessment and testing vendor costs for the 2014-2015 school year. They were approved at a total cost of $26,420. This is an increase over last year of $2,999; however, it includes ACT Aspire tests, which will increase the district’s ability to better track college and career readiness data. The motion to approve West Ed professional development plan for the 2014-2015 school year at a total cost of $17,000 passed. This is a decrease of $7,000 over last year’s contract with West Ed. Elise has done an excellent job of cost savings with the professional development, proposed budget dropping from $90,758 to $68,235, or a savings of $22,523. Most of the savings results from the area of greatly reducing the rarely used online subscriptions teachers have requested over the last decade. Also approved was one more first grade teacher aide and one more second grade teacher aide for the 2014-2015 school year. These positions are needed due to large class sizes. The recommendation is to hire teacher aides, rather than additional teachers, which cost on average a total of approximately
$50,000. The board tabled the low bid on the lease of five route buses. The board declared surplus one used route bus, B-7. B-7, a 2005 model, with 193,000 miles, will be surplus and auctioned off by the Canny Team Auction out of Johnson June 28 in Ulysses, sold as is. Motion of support for college reimbursement budget to be capped at $17,000 for the 20142015 school year was approved. With tight budgets for next year, if the district has high usage of this line item, Mark Crawford will reserve the right to deny reimbursement requests made for the second semester or summer. This will be done on a first come, first served basis. The Superintendent will also take into consideration and give priority those teachers finishing up a Master’s degree. The negotiated agreement gives teachers a benefit of $150 per credit hour, “with superintendent approval”. The four-year annual average of college reimbursement has been $15,069, with a high of $16,839 in 2012-2013. The Capital Outlay phase II expenses and summer repairs of $14,328 was approved. The board approved the cost/bids to fund work for two small con-
struction projects and one classroom furniture purchase (HHS, HLA and HES). A revised Director of Transportation job description was approved. The motion to approve a request from Odalys Castaneda to graduate one semester early in December 2014 passed. KASB Workman's Compensation bid of $49,827 at zero deductible for the 2014-2015 school year was approved. The board approved Driver’s Education adult driving instructors for the summer 2014 session. The district will use Jan Kilbourne, Gary Paige and Travis Johnson for driving hours to split up a caseload of 64 students to complete their driving time. Motion to approve a raise for all bus drivers for the 20142015 school year at five percent was amended and tabled. More research is needed to ensure a significant raise. The motion to accept the resignation of Brittani Mahan and waive the late resignation penalty contingent on her working two additional days this summer with the new HHS counselor was approved. The meeting was adjourned.
Coach Nick Rodriguez, Issac Castro, Edgar Don Juan and Luis Castro are honored at the regular monthly meeting of the USD 210 Board of Education Monday night.

Motorcycle rally hosts over 200 Saturday, June 14 marked the date of the Twentieth Annual Brian Lamberson Memorial Motorcycle Rally sponsored by the Hugoton Dust Bowl Riders. With a total attendance for the rally of well over 200 guests, approximately 100 bikes braved the wind and heat to make the 150 mile run with stops in Johnson, Ulysses, Sublette and Moscow. The bikes left at approximately 2:00 p.m., with the traditional police escorted parade down Main Street. The Lamberson family and extended family attended the event in force, with Terry’s wife Linda (Brian’s mother) at her usual place at the registration table for the day, along with daughter Miranda Lamberson Dumler. After a great BBQ meal, a surprise renewal of wedding vows took place, honoring DBR members Larry and Lizann Shugart who were celebrating their thirty-second wedding anniversary that day. Surrounded
by their “DBR Family” the couple repeated vows from a Harley Davidson Service Manual read by Ronnie Clayton aka “RevRon” of Trinidad, Co. Following the nuptials, door prizes were drawn and a successful auction of items including original artwork donated by local artist Rob Terrill displayed in a custom frame designed, created, and donated by Richard Rome. Mr. Terrill’s artwork brought $1,125.00. A small nine high straight won the $1,000 first place hand. Second place was won with three tens - six high and third place was three eights - ace high. With the hard work of the club members and volunteers, the cooperation of the owners of Barb’s Den - who allowed the club access to their establishment for this event - and the very generous contributions of so many individuals and businesses, the event was a great success.
Diabetes diagnoses up 12 percent among American citizens since 2012 The American epidemic of diabetes has leaped to historic heights in just two years, according to information just released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 29 million Americans now have the disease, up from 26 million, a 12 percent jump in the number of diabetes cases in just two years. This is not surprising to David Robbins, MD, director of
the KU Diabetes Institute at The University of Kansas Hospital, who is seeing more and more diabetes, and pre-diabetes patients every day. “It’s a sad and expensive statistic,” said Robbins. “Once one has diabetes, it not only shortens the life span, it as much as triples the cost of medical care. So it’s a very serious diagnosis.” From KU Medical Center.

Pratt hatchery provides a safe haven for millions of channel cat eggs Seventy-four degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect water temperature—when it comes to artificial channel catfish spawning, that is. Each year, staff at the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) Pratt hatchery conduct an artificial spawning program producing channel catfish eggs in the millions. It’s a
process that’s tried and true, and thousands of anglers depend on it each year. Here’s how it’s done. The process begins in early spring when hatchery staff prepare several ponds with an ideal breeding ratio—two males for every three females. When summer hits, staff submerge steel cream cans in knee-deep

water to simulate a natural cavity where catfish would normally nest. Once the cans are fully submerged, a male will enter and prepare a nest site and then herd a ready-tospawn female into the can where eggs are deposited and fertilization can begin. When waters reach the ideal temperature of 74 degrees, hatchery staff will check the cans twice a week and collect any fertilized egg masses, which can average one and a half to two pounds each. “The purpose of this process is to increase hatch rates. On our first day of collection, we got 908,000 eggs—80 percent of which we can get to hatch in a controlled environment,” said KDWPT fisheries biologist Brett Houdyshell. “Our goal this year is to collect approximately three million eggs.” Once the fertilized eggs are collected, they are placed in
special troughs with constant water circulation where the young can safely hatch. After about eight days, the fry are able to swim up and out of the egg mass and into connected tanks where food is available. “Channel catfish readily take fish food, so by their eighth day, they will be eating a prepared fish food,” said Houdyshell. Some fry will grow to fingerlings where they will be stocked in new or renovated waters, while others will stay in the hatchery system where they will continue to grow and be stocked the following fall as intermediate or catchable-size fish, ranging from ten to 12 inches. Channel catfish are just one of many fish species KDWPT hatchery staff produce around the state. For more information on KDWPT fish hatcheries and stocking reports, visit ksout doors.com and click “Fishing.”

Coleman Kirby, second from the left, and Katie Murray, third from left, pose with Southern Pi-
oneer Electric Cooperative representatives during their trip to Washington, D.C.
Katie and Coleman embark on trip of their lives Katie Murray and Coleman Milburn are on the trip of a lifetime. They each won an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. from Pioneer Electric Cooperative of Ulysses. They wrote essays and were interviewed to be chosen for this trip. Every year the electric cooperatives across the United States team up to take groups of students to the nation’s capital to meet the representatives and tour national monuments. This year’s trip has had more twists and turns than most, with the Kansas representatives having to change their flight plans due to overbooking the runway in D.C. Although spending extra time in Kansas City was not originally on the agenda, the representatives were able to see some sights they would not have otherwise, such as World’s of Fun.
From the photos, it appears that Katie and Coleman are maintaining their happy dispositions, despite all the delays and changes. The students will return June 19 with lots of stories to tell.
Katie is the daughter of Jim and Suzanne Murray of Rolla and will be a senior next year at Rolla. Coleman is the son of Kent and Jamie Milburn of Richfield and will also be a senior at Rolla.
Katie Murray and Coleman Kirby keep smiling in spite of changing plans during their trip to Washington, D.C.

Watch out for the return of the mosquitoes Mosquitoes are on the move again and with them, the potentially dangerous diseases they carry. West Nile, malaria, yellow fever and St. Louis encephalitis are some of the more common diseases carried by mosquitoes and now a new threat is emerging from a disease found for the first time last year in the Americas in the islands of the Caribbean. “Chikungunya virus gets its name from outbreaks in East Africa dating back to the 1950s,” Lee Norman, MD, chief medical officer with The University of Kansas Hospital said. “It has nothing to do with chickens, instead the name describes the posture of people who suffer Chikungunya as they stoop from the pain in their joints. Chikungunya sufferers say it feels like a combination of severe flu and severe arthritis.” Chikungunya virus is a se-
rious illness and Kansas public health officials are studying the disease and the mosquito that carries it to learn more while medical experts like Dr. Norman keep a watchful eye for the symptoms in people who fall sick . . .especially after traveling to the Caribbean. Whether traveling or sitting in your backyard, Dr. Norman says to consider wearing light colored, long sleeves and pants when outdoors. If you use DEET products, make sure the strength is 30% or less and consider spraying on your clothing as well as skin. If possible, sit next to a fan as mosquitoes find it difficult to fly and land in a breeze. Lastly, avoid perfumes and colognes as research shows mosquitos are attracted to different scents. From the University of Kansas Hospital.

MUSEUM UPDATE from The Stevens County Gas & Historical Museum Gladys Renfro and Beulah Carter, Linda McCrary and Billy Woodworth Organs The Cornish Company was a piano and organ mail-order dealer that cut out the middle man and sold directly to the consumer. This enabled the company to charge much less than if they sold their pieces through a dealer. The Cornish Company was established in Washington, N.J., in 1879 and through aggressive sales techniques and financing, became one of the leading dealers in America for these items. The original cost of one of the Victorian Pump Organ in 1890 was in the neighborhood of $35.00. Yes, $35.00 not $3,500.00! They advertised “It Will Cost You Nothing!” because they offered the consumer “One Year Free Trial” before buying the instrument. (www.search dome.com/bin/buy-itnow/search?q=cornish+organ) That may seem like a won-
derful deal; however, the average income for the year 1890 was only $37.33 per month opposed to today’s average monthly income of $5,000.00. Considering the rate of inflation, the same organ might cost $4,650.00! So we can see why the Cornish Company offered one year trial and financing! This 1890 mail order Victorian Pump Organ was in the Steve H. Anderson family for 123 years before it was brought to the museum last year. We also have a number of other organs and pianos here. Our curator, Gladys Renfro, might even be willing to play a tune or two for you! We are located at 905 South Adams, in Hugoton. Our hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closing only for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m. We are also open Saturday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD CONCERNING NATURAL GAS SERVICE RATE INCREASE REQUEST The Kansas Corporation Commission is holding a public hearing to allow Black Hills customers the opportunity to ask questions and make comments about Black Hills’ rate increase proposal. In its application, Black Hills said the increase was necessary because the company has continued to make investments in its system to provide safe, reliable, and efficient natural gas service to its customers. The Company further stated it has experienced increases in wages, medical expenses, and supplier costs. The requested increase would only affect the portions of a customer’s bill that relate to the delivery of gas by Black Hills to customers, the fixed monthly “Customer Charge,” and the per Therm “Commodity Charge.” The rate case does NOT involve the cost of gas that is collected through the Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA). The cost to purchase natural gas supplies is not regulated and is subject to market forces such as supply and demand, storage volumes, and weather. Black Hills’ last rate increase of $5.1 million was approved on May 16, 2007. Senator Moran is accepting internship applications United States Senator Jerry Moran announced he is accepting applications for congressional internships in his Washington, D.C., and Kansas offices for fall 2014. “Congressional internships offer Kansas students a great opportunity to learn about Congress and the legislative process,” Senator Moran said. “I hope to give Kansans an opportunity similar to the one I had serving in a congressional office years ago.” An internship in Senator Moran’s office provides a unique opportunity to work closely with Senate staff on behalf of the state of Kansas. Legislative interns will gain a better understanding of the legislative process in the U.S. Congress, and develop knowledge and professional skills valuable to future career pursuits. The intern program is open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students – or recent graduates – who have strong interest in public service and government and have
