Another nice rain last night! Seems like it almost always rains at fair time. But we will always take the rain we get. We enjoyed the Fair even if the exhibits seemed to be down. The music was good and I especially enjoyed the Quilts of Valor. Several Veterans who come to the senior center were presented with quilts. We appreciate their service! Incarnation
T
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” —John 1:14 NIV
he doctrine of the incarnation in Christianity refers to the notion that God became man in the person of Jesus, and thereby became embodied. We sometimes forget that God had a human body. Catholics should be reminded of this every time they look at a crucifix. There is indeed a body there! The incarnation is pregnant with meaning and significance, including the fact that Mary was literally pregnant with Jesus and that He had to be born just like every other person. And everything that is born must also die. As Sir Thomas Browne so eloquently put it “With what strife and pains we come into the world we know not, but 'tis commonly no easy matter to get out of it.” Among other things, the incarnation means that God understands our physical suffering. It also entails that our bodies are something we share with God. We can use our senses to taste and see the goodness of the Lord, and to imagine what Jesus experienced. An interesting way to make the stories of the Bible more real is to imagine what the experience was like that is being described, whether it is Jesus having his last meal with his disciples, or Paul being shipwrecked in the Mediterranean. We miss something important when we think of ourselves as only minds or spirits that happen to be in a body. We are essentially embodied creatures, and so is our God. Including the change locally during the past week, prices Sunday were 50.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago and are one cent per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has dropped 0.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 53.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. "Pushed higher by signs of a lessening in trade tensions between the U.S and the European Union and a draw down in U.S. oil and fuel inventories following last Wednesday’s Department of Energy’s Weekly Petroleum Status Report, pump prices across the country posted slight gains that could represent a U-turn in falling pump prices at the halfway point of summer," said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. "Indications of continued strong summertime demand for gasoline along with robust fuel export numbers could serve to help sustain moderately higher gas prices, but more geopolitical events such as the closing of oil ports on the Red Sea, affecting Saudi Arabian crude exports, will are sure to provide more upwards momentum for fuel prices in the week ahead." Support group offered for those grieving the loss of a loved one Tuesday, August 14, 2018 hospice chaplains Lynn White and Gerry Dupuis will co-facilitate “My HOPE”, a support group for adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. The group will meet the second Tuesday of each month at High Plains Public Radio, 210 North Seventh St., Garden City from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. The goal of this support group is to help participants experience hope and healing in their life losses and be able to move into new meaning and purpose for their lives. The sessions are open to the public and each participant is welcome to come and go as they like. If partic-
ipants choose, they may bring their lunch with them. These sessions are not therapy and they are not a replacement for individual and professional counseling for deep grief, but they are opportunities to share your story and learn from the stories of others. Reverend Gerry Dupuis is a graduate of the Center for Loss and Life Transition with a certification in Death and Grief Studies and is certified in Thanatology through the Association of Death Education and Counselling. Rev. Lynn White has 22 years in Pastoral Ministry and over ten years of experience in Hospice Chaplaincy and Bereavement Support.

KDHE announces WIC benefits now available by Electronic Benefit Transfer statewide The federal Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, administered by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment serves 30,800 families across the state. Historically, food available through the program could only be acquired at grocery stores utilizing paper checks. However, the federal government now requires states to issue an Electronic Benefits Transfer
(EBT) card to recipients to purchase food benefits. The pilot to test the use of the card launched in September 2017 in Shawnee County. The $3.2 million conversion to eWIC was funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. All states are required to implement EBT WIC programs by October 1, 2020. “This technology project came in on time and within
budget,” David Thomason, Kansas WIC Director said. “The alternative to paper checks has been well received by our clients and merchants.” WIC provides participantcentered nutrition education, healthy food and breastfeeding support to low-income families. Once a family qualifies for WIC, they
are allotted foods to meet their nutrition needs, through grocery stores, using the EBT card. At the register, the family will first swipe their eWIC card to deduct the cost of approved items. They will then pay for any remaining items with another form of payment. As a fraud deterrent, the EBT card requires a PIN to access
benefits. WIC provides services at more than 100 clinic sites throughout Kansas and currently serves approximately
50,200 women, infants and children under five. Submitted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Thousands respond but blood need is still critical Emergency need remains; critical call for type O blood donors to donate now Thousands of people have responded to the emergency call for blood donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July. Still, there continues to be an emergency need for donors of all blood types, especially type O, to give now to address a severe blood shortage. The Red Cross will be in Hugoton Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church at 600 S. Van Buren. Red Cross blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in, and right now there is less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to keep a five-day supply of blood to meet the needs of patients and to be prepared for emergencies requiring significant volumes of donated blood products. “Patients don’t get a summer break from the need for lifesaving treatments, so it is
critical that hospitals have access to blood products each and every day,” said Jan Hale, communications manager of the Red Cross Central Plains Blood Services Region. “We sincerely appreciate those who have responded to the call to help save lives, but the emergency need remains. Those who haven’t rolled up a sleeve to give are urged to do so today.” There is a particular need for type O blood, which plays an important role in ongoing patient care and emergencies. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type and can be given to patients with any Rh-positive blood type. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be given to any patient. It’s what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations. In thanks, all those who come to donate blood now through August 30, 2018, will

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a notfor-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Gaye L. Benfer, acting Kansas State Conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced Thursday NRCS is offering technical and financial assistance to producers in Kansas suffering from ongoing drought conditions. Warren M. Farrar Village Blacksmith By Mildred Farrar Fox and Audry Farrar McNutt In 1922, Dad bought a shop and equipment from J.B. Cunningham and made plans to move to Hugoton. We moved in early 1923, and Dad set up his shop and named it “The Village Blacksmith.” Later he learned to weld and added welding equipment. Still later, he installed a portable welder and tools on a pickup bed so he could take the rig to work. Dad was a very hard, conscientious worker. He had been a farmer and knew the farmers’ needs. Many nights he would work all night to repair something that was badly needed. I am sure many others will write about the great Depression and the horrible dirt
storms of the thirties. We lived through them. God knows how. I well remember the taped windows, the wet blankets hung at doors and windows, and the damp sheet draped over sleeping children. Many farmers went broke. Many others held on. When gas was discovered and the big Hugoton Gas Field began to develop, jobs were created and perhaps our particular part of the country fared a little better than some of the other dust bowl areas. Dad spent many hours welding on the many gathering lines in the gas field as well as doing repair work on drilling and producing equipment. This extra work allowed him to keep going and stay in business when many others were not so fortunate. Most of the Farrar siblings
had settled in western Kansas so we had great family get-togethers. I remember tables of food and the freezers of homemade ice cream hand cranked out under the shade of a tree. The greatest sorrow of Dad’s long life was the loss of his only son, Warren Jr. Junior had completed training in the Naval Air Force as a radioman-gunner. His plane went down on a search mission. His death followed our sister Mary Beth’s death from pneumonia by just six months. Dad could never accept the loss of his two children. Dad died in January of 1978 at the age of eighty-five years old. Taken from the “History of Stevens County and it’s people,” published in 1979.

Thursday, July 27, 1978 Charles and Edna Olinger attended the reunion for Crew 537-B, 360th Squadron, 303rd (Hell’s Angels) Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in Fort Worth, Tx. Most of the crew had not seen each other for 33 years, and what was so unusual is that all nine of the men are still living. Pictures were taken and much feasting and talking were enjoyed by all. World War II was fought all over again in their stories. Thursday, August 1, 1968 Mary Margaret McIlrath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Thompson, left Saturday for Oruro, Bolivia, where she will teach. She has been contracted by the United States government to teach two classes of English as a foreign English. She has been teaching migrant workers this summer at Leoti. Thursday, July 31, 1958 Ora McCulley of Moscow has been elected the membership into the American Guernsey Cattle Club. McCulley started with purebred Guernseys in 1941 and now owns 26 head. He is a member of the Kansas State Guernsey Breeders Association. Kyri Martinez and Cianna Green begin opening presents at Kyri’s wedding shower.
Kyri’s shower enjoyed by all Kyri Brummett Martinez was the guest of honor at a wedding shower July 28 at the Dermot School. Becki Richardson, Keyah Richardson, Lila Hays, Mandy Dunn and Hannah Shaffer were the hostesses. Cianna Green, best friend of the bride, found a couple of games to play while guests were gathering. One game was “How Many Kisses for the Mrs.?” Guests were encouraged to guess the number of chocolate kisses in the jar as they entered. The other game was “How Well Do You Know the Bride?” The questions were fun and some of the answers brought gales of laughter. Betty Bushey and
Shirley Cooper tied in knowing nine answers in the list of 20. Ann Claassen won the jar of kisses, guessing 101. The correct answer was 105. Guests were treated to raspberry lemonade tea, homemade cream cheese mints, nuts and delicious vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, created by Shawn Schwindt. The afternoon was full of fun and laughter as the presents were opened by a delighted Kyri. Each and every attendee at the shower holds a special place in Kyri’s heart and she will miss everyone as she travels to Twenty-nine Palms in California to begin her married life.

Families gather for farewell dinner The Dunn, Brummett and Milburn families gathered Saturday, July 28 to have a family dinner before Kyri Martinez moves to California. Family members in attendance were Andy and Mandy Dunn of Richfield, Lois Dunn, Sam and Rachel Dunn and Samantha of Richfield,
Priscilla, SaKya, Adynn and Cami Milburn of Elkhart, Tim, Janna and Adria Dunn of Rolla and Karick, Phoebe and Kylie Brummett of Dermot. The family enjoyed a great time of fellowship and sharing of memories with Kyri. Please keep her in your prayers as you think of her.

They “giddy up,” breaking out into a trot first, and if you let them do that, they’ll start galloping, then tearing off into a full run. You’ve got to apply the brakes all the way back. considering giving Earl a visit to let him know there was a calf in his general neck of the woods, and Dad would appreciate his help in finding it, yet at the same time Dad worried that alerting Earl to the issue would only serve to get Earl’s mouth to watering, inspiring him to hunt for the calf, but not exactly with the same goal in mind as Dad’s. While in this perplexed state of mind, Dad and Don noticed
there were fresh tracks on the road on top of the pickup tracks we’d left just a couple of hours earlier. We knew we were close! Eventually, we tracked down a very thirsty calf in a maize field not too far to the northwest of the Gilbert and June Bane farm. Dad had wisely thought to bring along a bucket of water, and after a few refreshing gulps, the calf was up and ready to go wherever we wanted to take
him, which we easily did in the back of the pickup. As for the character of Earl Day, he’d just have to get his beef in the usual way – driving his pickup into town and buying beef at one of the local grocery stores. 1Photo published by the Morton County Historical Society, compiler, Morton County 18861986, Cornerstone of Kansas, Elkhart, Kansas: Florence Merritt and Charlene Conrad Trahern, Co-chairs, 1986, p. 92.
