Medea

Urban Gardening

How do you reminds people that spring is here?

When I first approached Samuel Beckett’s play ‘Waiting for Godot,’ my reaction to the book was very different at the beginning than it was at the end. It was hard for me to relate to the play —to it’s characters, their manner of interaction, the speed and atmosphere— until I slowly realized that the play was trying to tell me something I had not anticipated. I had to wait until the end of the book for an answer, and then I experienced a ‘Eureka! moment that explained everything I needed to know. I turned my personal experience reading this play into a conceptual book project. My main approach to this book was to create an interaction between the audience, the play and the book. I started out by creating a ‘connect the-dot’ alphabet that would replace the dialogue in the play, so the reader is forced to decipher the text before being able to read it. My intention is to create a moment of experience that echoes the deep meaning of the play. I invite the reader of MY book to undergo the same experience of realization that I had.

Welcome to NewYork!

This project is to remind New Yorkers, and our guests, that NYC is and has always been a melting pot of ideas, languages and cultures. We are the reason for, and the example of tolerance in our nation. Using text or a phrase create a poster that is a reminder of what made and makes this a great city. This is a text-driven piece, but you may of course use imagery, color, stencils...whatever it takes to make your poster memorable.

NUMB / ENCORE ‘Visual Music’ is a project in which the goal is to begin with a sound and end with a word by expressing the rhythm, beat, flow and pace of the song using lyrics as visuals. The traditional typographic approach of gridded blocks of text with even letter spacing and leading no longer suffices. I chose to work with Numb/Encore,’ a song by the rock band Linkin Park and rapper Jay-Z. This song is an upbeat, high tempo song with a slower pace in the final verse. The song is broken down with two different vocals, the majority of the song is comprised of fast-pace, upbeat rap. The last verse begins as a slow

beat, low tempo rock that builds up into a faster beat and high pitched ending through the collaboration with the rap from the first verse. I decided to represent the song using two different typefaces for the vocals. The rap is visually represented by bringing the together, creating a form that feels like the music itself. The final verse of the song is expressed by extended alphabets that represent the rhythm and the pace of the vocal. This is gradually exaggerated to convey the high beat, high pitch climax of the song.

When I was a child, my favorite pastime was to make things for the people around me. I would draw and create just for the joy of making something unique for that special person. As I grew older, I came to realize that I was losing the sentiments of giving and sharing things that I made with those who appreciate uniqueness. This prompted me to recreate my personal moments by making plush stuffed toys. I wanted to help people connect with their inner child —regardless of their age— through the experience of interacting with a hand-made toy. I chose various colors of felt to begin hand-crafting ‘HOMELESS CREATURES.’ The look of these toys is derived from a doodle I used to make during my childhood. These toys will be placed around the city to be picked up by anyone. My hope is to create a moment of connection between myself and the finder of the toy. By this, I intend to initiate memorable personal stories and an opportunity to reconnect with childhood memories.
