The"Hybrid"- Master of Architecture Design Studio Thesis
This thesis aims to rethink historical town revitalization at the pre-selected study site of Bukit Mertajam, Pulau Pinang. This proposal rethinks historic town revitalization by realizing the balance between socio-economic redevelopment and preserving its natural identity through hybrid architecture. It argues that revitalization should explore through a hybrid architecture approach; on the connections to past (history), present (intangible culture), and future (sustainability). The typology- hybrid cultural innovation hub act as a catalyst in the revitalization by empowering the local traditional crafts and trades, addressing present and future society's needs. The aim is to revitalize the historic town through architecture innovation as threshold to connect the broken pieces between the old town, site and missing past. The hub will empower the community's unique craftsmanship and traditional trades and becomes the platform to learn the town's history. Architecture intervention as urban catalyst to revitalize Bukit Mertajam old town by integrating local cultural identity, digital and new architecture, in activation of social, economical and cultural sustainability for present and future. The hub opts to tell better stories through design hybridized with identified design generators inspired by the town elements. The unique local cultures and communities define the historical town; a symbiotic relationship should be formed between the socio-economic and natural identity in revitalization so that these intangible cultures can be long-lasting.
