TOTAL: Past Present Future Site Location: Total House, Russell Street, Melbourne, Victoria Thesis Statement Adaptive reuse is a non-invasive design intervention that repurpose a place of the past but what we create now through this intervention does not address further changes beyond the current needs. Society needs and values are always evolving and building should constantly evolve in order to keep up with that. Total House is an example that has a stagnant of growth and change due to its heritage status. Approximately twothird of Total House is car parking space and based on recent observation, it has been underused due to the decreasing of car ownership in Melbourne. The inactivation of space will eventually turn Total House into an urban blight and depreciation of its heritage value. This thesis project uses Total House as a testing ground to improve the practice of adaptive reuse into one that could repurpose for the current needs but also accommodate for the future evolution of the building.

Form Creation Original Massing A 12 storey building located on the corner of Little Bourke Street and Russell Street.

Subtraction Total House has floor to ceiling height of 2.3m. Alternative floors of the carpark is demolished to achieve a habitable height.

Addition Additional functional space is build and supported by the extension of existing structural system. Flexible floor plates are installed to accommodate changing needs. Existing column will be reinforced to support extra load.

Celebration of heritage New building extension is pull back on the North to provide maximum visibility of the overall Total House building. New and old parts of building are met on the south side where the balcony used as a viewing platform of the juxtaposition of old and new.

Light well are carve through the new and old massing to allow more daylight exposure of the interior space. The atrium also provide stack ventilation effect though the building, reducing energy require for HVAC system.

Site Location: 69 Matterhorn Drive, Clyde North, Victoria What happen when a typical ambulance branch has reached their lifespan of 50 years? It will be renovated or demolished which produce large amount of waste. This is the linear economy model commonly used in the building industry today. As building operational energy had been reduced by systems has higher performance, the next step is to shift into circular economy to reduce building’s wastage at the end of their life. Part of the solution for that is the idea of Design for Disassembly (DfD). A list of standard building components is created to design all ambulance stations but at the same time provide opportunity to response to site specific condition and customization, giving each station their own unique identity. The biophilic designs are brought in to create place and environment that could reduce stress and improve the paramedics’ well-being. This is addressed by having sensory connections with the nature through visual, sound and touch.

The brief of the project includes creating ambulance branches that could achieve net zero carbon. Through this studio we have the opportunity to learn and apply ESD tools such as the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and eTool that calculate the energy used and life cycle assessment of our project.

A Place for Textile Dyeing Site Location: 139 Elgin Street, Carlton, Victoria This project aims to build a community for creative textile dyers where the local Australian textile dyeing could be developed and establish into a creative yet reputable craft. It is a space where textile dyers could research and communicate through the art of textile dyeing. The project is designed for the clients to work and live while celebrating textile dyeing. It consists of workspace for the craft and a total of 3 residences, accommodating for both long and short term living. Communal living is encouraged to create engagement and interaction between the residents. The form and spatial strategies are derived from the process of textile dyeing to celebrate the craft. The curve is taken from the shape of dyed fabric when it is drying; the grid structure of the drying rack; the level of transparency derived from the ambiguity of the colour of the textile during the whole process of dyeing. This is a place to create, collaborate and celebrate.

Interlocking diversity:

The Tetris Apartment Site Location: 500-506 Spencer Street, West Melbourne, Victoria

In West Melbourne Structure Plan, Spencer St is proposed to be rezone into special use zone and also be turned into a local high street which leads to increasing diversity of building uses and community. Furthermore, the increase of people who want to live in a close proximity to the city, including the ageing society and families int the future is foreseeable. Hence, the project explores the possibility of creating a dense but comfortable living space for people from different culture and demographic. The building form is inspired by the Tetris game. The apartment units were design based on the 5 distinct blocks in the game. As the units interlock, the void in between the units become spaces that connect each units as the circulation, social gathering or open spaces.

The Tetris apartment is a mixed-use multiresidential building that comprise of retails and multi-purpose space on the ground floor and a total of 19 dwellings. It has a mixture of 1, 2, 3 bedrooms with either single level and maisonette unit type. They are stack and arrange in a way where each unit has cross or stack ventilation, dual or multi aspect and north facing balcony. Because of the arrangement and different module of apartment unit, the tenant will have a different living experience forming a sense of individuality.

Site Location: Chinatown, Lt. Bouke Street, Melbourne, Victoria

Located in Chinatown, the park has a role to conserve the Asian cultural heritage. This is explored through designing its atmospheric sensation during the Chinese seasonal events such as the Spring festival celebration and Mooncake festival - where it could function as an event space and provide a comfortable outdoor environment to hold these cultural events. By combining the design principles of a Chinese classical garden and microclimatic design strategies, the urban park provides a comfortable outdoor space and enhanced experiences of Chinese culture all year long.

Design Strategies

Water & Rock Features Two key features in the design to bring a notion of balance in terms of microclimate mitigation and Chinese culture philosophy.

Planting Design Provides functions of featuring view and adapting to microclimate in different seasons. The aim is to create a picturesque scenery for visitors and provide shade when needed.

Cool Paving Permeable pavement could reflect sunlight resulting in a cooler pavement and atmospheric temperature. The rainwater flow under the site will also help to carry heat away.

Shading Structure Designed shading structures will provide shading for people during hot summers and warm air allowed to come through during winters.

Design Strategy : Water and Rock Features

Notion of Balance Using the idea of Shanshui to create a balance of microclimate mitigation.

Prevailing Wind The two dominant wind directions are from south and southwestern in the summer and autumn; northernly winter wind has been prevented by adjacent building.

Wind Tunnel While designing for the orientation and form of the rock garden, the middle part of the rock garden is emptied to provide a tunnel for summer breeze to come through into the north court.

Fresh and cool breezes manipulated by the water pond.

Rocks Help to absorb a part of heat in hot summers, and release the heat back slowly, regulating a stable temperature in day and night.

Water Pond helps to cool down the prevailing wind from south in hot summers and increase moisture in the air.

To maintain the heritage value of the house, several heritage features such as the chimneys and main hipped roof form are maintain. 33 College St : Elsternwick Site Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia This is an extension project for a single storey house. The extension occur at the rear of the house which will be use as a kitchen dining and a second living room. The client also wanted a small pool addition at the backyard. My responsibility in the project is mainly documenting and ammending the design development drawings, 3D modeling and joinery drawings.
