A Festival of Welcome For Everyone Studying at the University of Hull Whether you’re new to uni or not, most people will have heard of Freshers Week. At the University of Hull we usually refer to the first week as Welcome Week, and in the past it was a week of events, including some fairs and club night events aimed at introducing you to uni life. After Welcome Week each year we sent out a survey that thousands of you filled in. This year we looked through several years of feedback and gathered together common themes with the aim of developing the greatest ever welcome for our members: WelcomeFest was born. If you’ve been to the likes of V, Glastonbury, Bestival, or Leeds, you’ll understand the comparisons to WelcomeFest. We have thousands of people from all over the country, of all ages, with every different kind of music taste, fashion sense and personality, meeting in one place with one thing in mind: to kick-start their academic year with a bang, meet new people and have fun.
Here are a few examples of what you said and how we’ve changed things this year: I arrive the week before Welcome Week so I don’t receive an official welcome. We know that some of you (International students, HYMS and Health & Social Care students, we’re looking at you!) arrive earlier than others, so this year we begin our official welcome period a week earlier. We have put together a full schedule of events to welcome you (and anyone else that’s around) ahead of other arrivals.
Welcome Week promotional materials and events are all aimed at under 21 undergraduates. All of the marketing has been produced with everyone studying at the University of Hull in mind, whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate, mature or part-time student. The combination of our Give It A Go programme and the usual nighttime events that you would expect, hopefully means that there’s something in this guide to tempt you to get involved.
There aren’t enough non-alcohol events in the schedule. We’ve relaunched our Give It A Go programme with 30 non-alcohol events over three weeks – the most ever seen during a Welcome period.
One week of activity can be a bit intense and it would be better spaced out As well as starting earlier, we have also extended WelcomeFest for a week so that you can take it easy during your first week at uni and spread out your events over two or three weeks. It also means that there are even more opportunities to meet new people and discover everything that your new Union, University and city have to offer.
The fairs are too crowded. This year we’ve allowed our sports teams and societies to use areas outside the marquee to promote their activities, so you can see what they do firsthand! We’ve also limited the number of club members allowed per table at the AU Fair and spread the societies and volunteering fair over two days, giving all societies (including newly formed ones) the opportunity to promote themselves.
Remember, as a student at the University of Hull you are automatically a member of Hull University Union. #weareyourunion!
Give It A Go is an activities programme full of fantastic one-off events. Try new things, make new friends and discover new places with no regular commitment required. Just buy a ticket, come along and enjoy. Tickets for all our events can be purchased online at www.hullstudent. com/store or at the box office. The Give It A Go programme is subsidised by the Union, so tickets for each event are limited. Purchase in advance to avoid disappointment. We have five different kinds of GIAG activity that you can take part in.
ESCAPE Events that help you discover your new part of the world! This year we are excited to be running trips to historic York and local market town Beverley.
EXPLORE Learn more about the City of Culture 2017. From city tours to going backstage at some of our most iconic venues, such as the KC Stadium (home of Premier League club Hull City and Super League team Hull FC) and the world’s only submarium, The Deep.
TASTE Whether you’re a budding chef or just want to try something a bit different, Taste events will give you the opportunity to try new foods and learn more about different cuisines.
ACTIVE Get those endorphins flowing with some physical activity. Don’t fear – we’re not going to be yelling at you Sergeant Major style, we’re just providing some activities to put a bit more spring in your step. Literally get your skates on with roller and ice-skating, and challenge your housemates to a duel with laser tag or gokarting. No experience necessary!
CREATE Whether you’re inspired by the shabby chic delights of Kirsty’s Homemade Homes or childhood memories of sticky back plastic on Blue Peter, Create events will help you make something special that you can be proud of. Get ready to say “Here’s one I made earlier.”
OUR VENUES
Our very own £3.6 million club right here on campus. Winner of BEDA student nightclub of the year in 2013, as well as the prestigious Best Bar None Gold Award for four consecutive years. Asylum is the envy of other students’ unions and leads the way for student club night experiences, hosting favourites Tower and Brassick every week – Hull’s biggest and longest running student nights! Asylum boasts a brand new L Acoustics PA system, 2 x 2000mW full colour lasers, an intelligent lighting system and top of the range DJ equipment.
Named after the journalist and former University of Hull student, John McCarthy (affectionately referred to as the Johnny Mac by students) is open from 8.30am until 3pm every day for breakfast, lunch and coffee. In the evening it hosts Bounce Bass Music events, comedy, open mic nights and many more. During Tower and Brassick nights, Johnny Mac becomes Room Two, and it is also available for student society events most nights of the week, making it HUU’s most diverse venue.
Sanctuary Bar is the main bar at Hull University Union, and also happens to have the largest beer garden in Hull! Open from 8.30am until 11pm every day with great prices on food and drinks; it’s the place to go after a hard day at Uni. Sanctuary also shows all the major live sporting events and hosts our ever-popular Karaoke night every Thursday and the legendary HUU Big Quiz with big cash prizes every Sunday.
THE MARQUEE We’re bringing in a huge 675 square metre outdoor marquee just for WelcomeFest, giving us plenty more space for festival frolickings! The marquee will host all of the fairs as well as the super exciting Laser Tag and Roller Disco. We’re parking the marquee right outside of the Sanctuary terrace so you can easily hop from one event to the next.
ALL VENUES You may see us refer to events in “All Venues”. Our conjoined building layout means that we can open up our doors and host events in three of our venues, Asylum, Johnny Mac and Sanctuary. This gives us the capacity to host bigger and better events with up to 2500 students.
