Dear Friends, Supporters, and Allies,
Welcome to the HRC Atlanta Dinner & Auction!
As the Co-Chairs of this remarkable event, it is our profound pleasure to extend a warm welcome to each and every one of you. Tonight, we gather not just to celebrate the strides we’ve made in the pursuit of equality but also to reaffirm our commitment to the work that lies ahead.
The Human Rights Campaign has been at the forefront of advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, and your presence here signifies a shared vision—a world where everyone is embraced for who they are, regardless of whom they love.
This evening’s dinner and auction are a testament to the power of community and the generosity of spirit that defines our great city of Atlanta. The funds raised tonight will fuel our ongoing initiatives, support our advocacy efforts, and bolster the programs that empower our youth and allies.
As we enjoy the festivities, let us also remember the importance of our cause. The fight for equality requires tenacity, compassion, and the courage to stand up against injustice. Together, we are a formidable force for change. We are thrilled to have you join us for an evening of inspiration, celebration, and action. Let’s make this a night to remember!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Jen Slipakoff and Javier Guillermo Co-Chairs, HRC Atlanta Dinner & Auction

Dear Neighbors:
As the 61st Mayor of Atlanta, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to the attendees of the 35th Annual Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Dinner & Auction. Although I am unable to join you all this evening, I am happy to report that leaders within my administration are with you tonight, as well as members of my LGBTQ Advisory Board and my colleagues on the Atlanta City Council.
Atlanta is a group project. Through our Division of LGBTQ Affairs, led by Mr. Malik Brown, and our Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Board – we’re working to advance equity and progress for our LGBTQ+ residents, employees, and visitors.
Since last year’s dinner, we have achieved remarkable milestones. I declared 2023 as the Year of the Youth in Atlanta, marking the official beginning of my commitment to make Atlanta the best city in the world to raise a child. Throughout the Year of the Youth, we invested millions of dollars in Atlanta’s young people and youth-serving organizations. We hosted our Inaugural Youth Pride Festival + Summit, welcoming LGBTQ youth and families for a fun-filled day where we provided resources, activities, and communitybuilding opportunities. Additionally, we launched Atlanta’s first-ever LGBTQ Youth Mentorship Pilot, connecting a group of young LGBTQ+ Atlantans with our city’s most accomplished LGBTQ+ adults.
Alongside my esteemed colleagues on the Atlanta City Council, we paid tribute to our hometown icon and Atlanta Public Schools alumnus, RuPaul, by proclaiming March 10th as RuPaul Day in the ATL. To commemorate this occasion, we welcomed our partners from the Rainbow Book Bus to Atlanta, where we distributed nearly 1,000 LGBTQ+ banned books to Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ youth and families. In an era marked by efforts to restrict access to information and educational material, the City of Atlanta proudly stands in solidarity with all children. In furtherance of the Rainbow Book Bus’s mission, my Office made a $5,000 donation to support their life-saving efforts.
Last month, we proudly announced that Atlanta had been chosen as the first-ever U.S. city to host Global Black Pride. We are thrilled for yet another opportunity to welcome visitors from around the world and showcase Atlanta’s unique culture, southern charm, and diverse communities on the global stage.
Serving as your Mayor is the highest honor, and I remain steadfast in my dedication to Moving Atlanta Forward for all residents, including our beloved LGBTQ+ community.
Sincerely,
Mayor Andre Dickens

Welcome to the 36th Human Rights Campaign Atlanta Dinner and Auction!
It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 36th Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Atlanta Dinner and Auction! HRC's Annual Dinner is a celebration of the great strides we have made in fighting for human rights and the equality of all, and a reminder of the work that remains to be done to live up to the promise of America
As the first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature, I was provided the opportunity to serve because of leaders who broke barriers and paved the way for the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders such as Cathy Woolard, Karla Drenner, Simone Bell, Alex Wan, and Jeff Graham. In partnership with organizations like HRC along with donors and supporters like you, we have the power to ensure all members of our LGBTQ+ family have the freedom to thrive and are treated with equal dignity and respect.
Together, we have made progress in the State of Georgia – the cradle of the civil rights movement. In 2004, the Georgia State Constitution was amended to prohibit same-sex marriage. Ten years later, same-sex marriage became the law of the land Along with recognizing and reaffirming the equal dignity of LGBTQ+ Americans, we fought and we won the constitutional right to marry the person we love. This year during the 2024 legislative session in Georgia, nearly 20 anti-LGBTQ laws were introduced, many focused on attacking transgender youth. We defeated every single one of them.
As a member of the Georgia LGBTQ Legislative Caucus, we will continue to fight for our rights and overcome the challenges we face to make progress for our community by building and strengthening our diverse coalition. So tonight, let us celebrate the progress we have made and stand firm in our commitment to human rights and equality. Tomorrow, let us stand united in common purpose and get back to the hard work of continuing the march toward freedom, equality, and justice for all.
Yours in service,
Rep. Sam Park

Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 36th HRC Atlanta Dinner & Auction!
It is wonderful to be together this evening to celebrate the progress made by this terrific organization and recommit ourselves to the work still ahead.
As a former teacher and school board member here in Atlanta, I am incredibly grateful for HRC’s efforts to support and protect our kids especially those who have come under increased attack this year by lawmakers here in Georgia and across the country. These last few months have been a vivid reminder of our collective responsibility to build a society where our young people can love themselves for who they are without denying their identities or questioning their self-worth.
As a native Atlantan, I was incredibly proud to be one of the four openly LGTBQ people sworn into Atlanta’s City Council in January 2022 And I am excited about the work led by Mayor Andre Dickens and our Division of LGTBQ Affairs as evidenced by everything from our highest-ever score on last year’s Municipal Equality Index to the City’s first-ever financial investment specifically for Atlanta’s transgender community. More to come on all fronts
My sincere thanks and appreciation to each of you who work every day to help build an equitable, inclusive, and diverse Atlanta for all who call this incredible city home.
Please reach out if I can ever help from City Hall.
Sincerely,
Matt Westmoreland

Greetings!
On behalf of the Atlanta City Council and the citizens of Atlanta, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 36th Annual Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner & Silent Auction.
I am a proud member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people plus community, and I am especially proud to serve with two other openly LGBTQ+ colleagues on the City Council. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with HRC in the work to achieve equality for all LGBTQ+ people and to ensure the City of Atlanta continues to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone.
As we enjoy this wonderful evening and all that makes our community special, let us each reaffirm our passion and commitment to HRC – by becoming a member for the first time, volunteering, or increasing your financial support.

BOYBUTANTE AIDS FOUNDATION INC
LEON ALLEN & WINSTON JOHNSON COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD
It all began in 1989 when a group of friends (Mark Cline, Alan McArthur, Michael Del Giudice, Jason Shadix, and the late Duane Garrett) returned from a trip to Charleston, SC. As they reflected on the events of the weekend, they recalled the drag ball they attended and thought, as Alan has said, “Athens needs this.” The planning for the first Athens Drag Ball began. Vernon Wall, aka Coretta Scott Queen who performed with an Atlanta charity Camp Drag group called The Armorettes. The Boybutante committee asked Vernon Wall to coordinate the Ball’s drag entertainment. The Boybutante committee wanted to give the Ball an air of genuine respectability so the decision was made to make that evening’s Ball a benefit for local charities; and the Ball was christened the “Boybutante Ball: A Night of a Thousand Barbras”. With each passing year, the Boybutante Ball continued to draw larger and larger crowds, becoming one of Athens’ favorite and long-standing annual event traditions. In 1996, the Boybutante Committee made the decision to incorporate, becoming the Boybutante AIDS Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization. With over a million dollars raised, the Boybutante AIDS Foundation, Inc., remains committed to “partying for a cause” by creating fundraising events that better our community with efforts of inclusion and equality.

CONGRESSWOMAN LUCY MCBATH
SPECIAL GUEST
Representative Lucy McBath is a wife, an author, and an advocate, but the most important title she will ever hold is “Jordan’s Mom.”
On Black Friday in 2012, McBath’s son, Jordan Davis, was sitting in the back seat of a friend’s car at a gas station. A man pulled up next to them, complaining about the “loud music” they were playing. The man pulled out a gun and fired 10 shots into the car, hitting Jordan three times, and killing him.
After Jordan’s death, McBath dedicated her life to preventing other families from experiencing the same pain she did.
McBath left her 30-year career as a flight attendant at Delta Airlines to become the National Spokesperson and Faith and Outreach Leader for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
In 2017, after the mass shooting that killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, McBath knew she had to stand up and run for Congress.
Since taking her oath of office in January of 2019, McBath has sought bipartisan solutions to end gun violence, uplift small business and our economy, protect and serve our nation’s veterans, and lower the cost of health care and prescription drugs.
A two-time breast cancer survivor, Representative McBath knows how important it is to protect those with pre-existing conditions and ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable care. McBath partnered with Senator Warnock to introduce a bill that would cap insulin costs at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare. The legislation was signed into law by the President and went into effect in 2023.
McBath has supported H.R. 1425, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act, a bipartisan bill to ensure that everyone with preexisting conditions is covered. McBath also introduced legislation requiring Medicare to cover hearing aids, and her bill was included in H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. This landmark, bipartisan legislation would lower the cost of medication, stop big pharmaceutical companies from ripping off families, and reinvest billions in innovation and the search for new cures and treatments.
McBath has been instrumental in passing Red Flag laws as part of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Law so that loved ones and law enforcement have more tools to get guns out of the hands of those who may pose a threat to themselves or others. For the first time in over two decades, McBath helped procure funding to study gun violence as a public health epidemic.
In August of 2019, McBath’s bill, the HAVEN Act, which protects veterans in need, was signed into law by President Trump. The Washington Post called this bipartisan piece of legislation the “biggest bill passed” by a freshman this Congress. She has been called “an effective lawmaker” during her first year in Congress, and “one of the House Democratic Caucus’ most important voices.”
To protect the education of our children, five measures led by McBath were included in the landmark Higher Education Act, a bill to improve the quality of education, lower the cost of college, and expand opportunity for students across America.
McBath also led bipartisan legislation in December of 2019 to modernize data collection practices and improve epidemic preparedness at the Centers for Disease Control. In March 2020, she secured the $500 million she requested as part of the COVID-19 relief package.

SOPHIA DASHING
PERFORMER
How did you get started in music? I started singing and writing music when I was 6 years old. I grew up singing in choirs and loved being in the dance studio any chance I could get. Performing in general has always felt like my safe space. I was signed to a professional dance agency at the age of 8 and have been dancing and singing since. Expressing myself through music is what has made the most sense to me in this life form at a really young age, so I’m beyond blessed to be living out my dreams and passions as a female musician.
How would you describe your genre of music? I would describe my genre as mostly pop with hints of R&B. I’m inspired by and listen to both genres, so will always find ways to blend and incorporate both of them into my sound.
When and how did you get your start professionally? I released my first single in 2021, working with Grammy Award-winning engineer Jeremiah Adkins, songwriter and vocal producer Amore Jones, and Eks for production. We have such a great ebb and flow, and I’ve now created five songs with all of them. I also worked with Grammy-nominated Pierre Medor on two of my singles, ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘Divine.’ I’m so grateful to have found an amazing team to put out music with professionally.
Where are you currently in your career? Currently in my career, I am eight months in and enjoying every single second. I write a new song every day and am constantly creating. I’m speaking with a booking agent, and as of right now, I am rehearsing for upcoming performances. I’m so excited to get out on the stage and perform my music!
Favorite song ever produced? My favorite song I’ve ever done is a tie between ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘way i,’ my latest single. Both make me want to dance in different ways and really bring out the dancer in me.
Moment that changed your career the most thus far? I’ll never forget when I was asked to perform at Atlanta Pride last year on my 20th birthday! As an LGBTQ+ artist, that meant so much to me, especially since I’ve been attending Atlanta Pride since I was 16 years old. I was ecstatic to perform, but COVID-19 protocols ended up cancelling the festival for 2021. I will be performing there this year though!
Any recent releases? Yes! My most recent release is a song called ‘way i.’ It’s a vibey R&B track for when you need to get in the mood, light candles and lounge, or simply connect to the relatable, sensual message of desire and longing for more in a relationship.
Anything you’re working on now that you can tease? I’m currently working on my next single, which is a ballad. I’m so thrilled to put this next song out because I’ve never done an emotional song before. It’s a heartbreak song, so get the tissues ready. @sophiadashing

WHAT WE DO
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.
ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION
The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.
B U IL DING A ND DEM ONS TR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER
HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.
ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES
The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.
All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.
Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people.
Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality.
HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate.
Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees.
HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities.
Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.
Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people.
Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools.
Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.
Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council.
