Welcome The Tri-Chairs Welcome You to the 25th Annual HRC Greater Philadelphia Dinner! Dear Friends, We’re inspired by all of the beautiful activists and supporters filling the ballroom tonight at the 2022 Human Rights Campaign Greater Philadelphia Dinner. This night would not be possible without our guests, corporate partners, silent auction donors, and of course, the hard work of our volunteers and HRC Staff Partners. The Human Rights Campaign is successful because of you. Tonight we celebrate how far we’ve come in LGBTQIA+ equality, but we know how much work lies ahead. The attacks on our community, particularly those against our Trans and BIPOC siblings, increase every single day. State legislatures around the country have been introducing a record number of anti-Trans and anti-LGBTQ+ bills, such as those passed in recent days in Florida and Texas, and passing them at an alarming rate. While tonight’s dinner is an important event in our campaign, it doesn’t stop here. As we prepare for the 2022 midterm elections, this year promises a tough fight to put pro-equality candidates into offices across the country. We’ll be heavily involved in get-out-the-pro-equality-vote efforts throughout the year at Prides, political events and in the community at-large. From canvassing to phone banking, we’re already pushing full speed ahead. There are many ways for you to a part of our work, and we welcome you with open arms. Volunteer information is placed at each of your tables. Your dedication, determination, and support are a beacon of hope to our community. We all are here to maintain our momentum and fuel our mission with a shared sense of purpose. We are HRC and we will succeed. Thank you deeply for your commitment to equality.

All our love and gratitude,

Tom Rogers (He/Him/His), Leigh-Anne Taylor (She/Her/Hers), and Kyle Wolfe (They/Them/Theirs) Tri-Chairs, 2022 Human Rights Campaign Greater Philadelphia Dinner Committee

SPECIAL PERFORMER

SHEA DIAMOND

“The struggle looks different for different people. But this music is for everyone.” So testifies Shea Diamond, who, with a gritty mix of sounds that digs into everything from R&B, rock and hiphop to blues, folk and gospel, makes music that speaks to the universal experience while sharing from her very personal one. Shea (pronounced she-uh) has always had to fight to live her truth. Indeed, she has fought to live her very she-ness. As a black transgender woman, that’s just what she does every time she walks out into the world-representing herself and amplifying the voices and experiences of her community. But now after all of her struggle, this game-changing new singer-songwriter is living her dream with Seen It All, her soulful and soulbaring debut EP (Asylum Records) that was executive-produced by hit songwriter Justin Tranter. On Seen It All, Shea bravely tells her truth to a world that hasn’t always wanted to really see her. “I’m the flame that you can’t un-see,” she announces with unapologetic honesty on the haunting opener “American Pie.” The guitar-greased centerpiece of Seen It All is “I Am Her,” an empowering trans anthem on which Shea defiantly belts, “Never asked for no one’s philosophy/It’s obvious I’m proud of me.” “It is a compilation of my life experiences,” she explains. “It speaks on the rejection from religion, the rejection from family, and having to be all right by yourself, you know what I mean? After the world has shunned you and said, ‘Look, we don’t want you,’ you have to want yourself. I contemplated suicide several times as a youth because nobody wanted me.” Shea—who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas before moving to Memphis and then Flint, Michigan as a child— says that “as early as I can remember, I always identified as being a girl. It was hard work to pretend to be a gender that you’re not. I should have gotten an Oscar, really. I had so much pressure on me as child to be masculine. Even when I was the choir director for our church, my mother would still whisper in my ear that I was singing too high. Growing up trans takes a lot of guts.” Shea was unable to cope with the pressures at home and ran away at 14. Entering the foster care system as a ward of the state, she eventually became emancipated at 17. Then in 1999, desperate to get money for sex reassignment surgery, she committed armed robbery and consequently served about 10 years in the men’s prison system, getting shuffled around “because I was too feminine.” During her incarceration, though, she found her voice as an artist, singing and writing songs like “I Am Her.” Shea’s fellow inmates even became fans: “The guys used to be singing ‘I Am Her.’” After being released in November 2009, Shea moved to New York City and was introduced to the trans activism world. It was her a cappella performance of “I Am Her” at a Black Trans Lives Matter event that caught the attention of Justin Tranter, the former leader singer of Semi Precious Weapons who is now a sought-after songwriter for artists like Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Gwen Stefani. Shea immediately impressed Tranter with her talent. “Not only does this woman have a very beautiful, powerful story to tell, she can back it up as a musician. Vocally, her tone is magical; it’s so rich and so beautiful. Every time she opens her mouth to sing, you believe every word. And in terms of songwriting, she’s a real storyteller.”

SPECIAL PERFORMER CRYSTAL WATERS “One of the most influential women of Dance Music”

-mixmag

When you hear the name Crystal Waters, you immediately think of a woman whose talent and brand has sustained her 30-year career, yet the span of her work continues to engage new fans and please her enormous base. In fact, this pioneer, innovator and dance music legend was also named by Billboard Magazine as “one of the most successful Dance Music Artists in the history of the Billboard Dance Music Chart.” Crystal is best known for her string of domestic and international number one dance hits in the 1990’s, including her 1991 signature smash, “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)”, which garnered her 3 American Music Award nominations and made her an international sensation. “Gypsy Woman” became a #1 global smash because of its socially-conscious lyrics and positively infectious hook. Crystal was firmly embraced by the dance community and in 1994, she again found mainstream success with “100% Pure Love,” which became one of the longest charting songs, residing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a whopping 48 weeks. Along with her 3 American Music Award nominations, she went on to win 6 ASCAP Songwriter Awards, an MTV Video Music Award nod and 4 Billboard Music Awards, which she won for the Top-Selling Hot Dance Music Club Play Single. Born in Camden, NJ, right outside of Philadelphia, Crystal comes from a truly accomplished musical family. “My dad had a hit record in the early ‘60’s and appeared on American Bandstand, performing under the name Junior Waters,” she recalls, and her entertainer lineage doesn’t stop there. Crystal is the grand-niece of Ethel Waters, the legendary Academy Award nominee (Pinky, 1949) and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. After high school, she was accepted to the prestigious Howard University to study computer science. Yet, a chance meeting with a psychic first inspired her to consider singing. “She said there was something I wasn’t doing with my voice,” Crystal recalls. “She also told me that I would not be happy until I did it.” Crystal then set out on a singer / songwriter career writing her first of many hits to come, “Gypsy Woman.” Crystal’s impressive 13 #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits and 11 Top 10 songs have resulted in well over 100 million streams on Spotify, YouTube, and 2.12 million followers on Shazam at the very least. Adding to her musical accolades, she had another #1 hit in Europe in 2009, with Alex Gaudino called “Destination Calabria,” it achieved the #1 Pop Chart status in over 40 countries around the world. Later, her single “Testify” with UK producer Hi-Fi Sean was in top rotation on BBC Radio 2, a song that to date, she still gets asked to perform.

Yet another #1 club hit was in 2018 with “I Am House,” produced by Sted-E & Hybrid Heights and released on Kenny Dope’s Dopewax Records, with Kenny being a 4x Grammy nominee himself. This would bring her overall tally of hits to 16 #1’s and Top 10 singles in over 15 countries to date. In 2021, a feature on RuPaul’s Drag Race drove Crystal’s ‘100% Pure Love’ to re-enter the Top 10 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Sales Chart. With millions of new streams, and the decision to make it the year’s official anthem of NYC Pride, it ignited Universal Music to re-release the song with brand new remixes. Her recent release “Party People” with Dj Spen and remix by Michael Grey garnered major support from the likes of BBC Radio One, Nexus Radio, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Low-Steppa and many others. With her studio work in constant flow, Crystal is on deck to work with some renowned producers on more amazing new upcoming releases. There’s more to this world-renowned artist than just releasing music. Since the start of her career, Crystal has been a staunch advocate for LBGTQ Rights and AIDS research. She was also involved in the creation of the Soundexchange Bill passed by the US Congress in 2008. (Soundexchange collects and distributes digital performance royalties for recording artists) and was invited to the White House along with several other artists for their efforts. Crystal also walked the halls of Capitol Hill speaking to Congress several times, advocating for the passage of the Performance Rights Act, which seeks to correct a loophole that allows AM and FM radio broadcasters to not pay performers for their work. Crystal has begun touring once again with the success of her songs “House of Light,” released on her own IAH Records label which landed a Top 10 position in the UK’s Music Week Pop Dance Chart and “Never Enough” out now on Atlantic Records. “I Am House” is not only the name of Crystal’s record label and #1 Billboard Club hit, but also the name of her champion monthly radio podcast which features the latest and greatest vocal House Music, reaching over 6.7 million listeners and fans from all around the world. IAH Radio can be heard on SiriusXM Channel 141, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8pm ET as well.

HONOREE AMBER HIKES

Amber Hikes is a social justice advocate, community organizer, and unapologetic queer black woman. As the ACLU’s first Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, she provides vision, leadership, and direction for the ACLU’s nationwide strategy to support equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across all aspects of the organization’s work and efforts. Amber serves as both the internal and external ambassador on the importance of EDI as a crucial cornerstone of the ACLU’s culture of belonging. Prior to joining the ACLU, Amber served as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs where she developed policy and served as the principal advisor to the Mayor on issues that affect the LGBTQ community. At the Mayor’s Office, Hikes set her sights on fighting and advocating for the most impacted populations within the LGBTQ community – specifically youth, elders, immigrants, transgender people, and people of color. In her time leading the office, Amber advocated for anti-discrimination legislation at the municipal level, passed one of the nation’s most trans-inclusive police policies and added black and brown stripes to the rainbow flag, prompting an international conversation about race and discrimination within the LGBTQ community. A community organizer from an early age, Amber’s full-time career began in education access advocacy—as the youngest Upward Bound director in the country, at the University of Pennsylvania. The moral compass of Amber’s work, intersectional inclusion, can be traced throughout her organizing and her work supporting and facilitating the pursuit of postsecondary education for youth of color experiencing poverty and homelessness. Hikes has been recognized nationally by OUT Magazine as “Community Organizer of the Year” in the 2018 OUT 100 and by Business Equality Pride as one of the 40 LGBTQ Leaders Under 40. Hikes earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and Psychology and English degrees from the University of Delaware. Amber believes in employing an intersectional lens in all aspects of community work and leans daily on the words of sister Audre Lorde: “There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle, because we do not live singleissue lives.”

WHAT WE DO The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BUILDING AND DEMONSTRATING POLITICAL POWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program

dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality. HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate. Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees. HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities. Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities

and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.

Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people. Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools. Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.

Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. Furthering Human Progress Through Technology Our core purpose is to further human progress through technology, and nowhere is this opportunity more apparent than amid the 4th Industrial Revolution. We believe humanity is always at its best when it produces innovative technologies that advance the ways we live and work. In support of this purpose, our mission is to deliver amazing customer experiences with networking, cloud and security solutions that power next-gen business applications. We aim to democratize complex and cutting-edge technologies and deliver simple solutions, so our customers can focus on innovation, not their IT. Our philosophy of continuous improvement means we tirelessly pursue exceptional outcomes for our customers, partners and team. And we do all this while boldly embracing change with a daring spirit to excite and inspire our customers to imagine new possibilities.
