Welcome Welcome to the 2022 Human Rights Campaign South Florida Dinner and Auction! On behalf of the South Florida Board of Governors and Steering Committee, we welcome you to a night of celebration and renewed vigor in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. The last time we were together was January 2020. Since then we have seen a racial reckoning that Black Lives Matter, all while being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time we endured attacks on our trans siblings; which brought us anti-trans sports bills and the “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” legislation in Florida. Things have been tough. There has never been a better time to be “Together Again”! Despite the countless attacks on our community, we persevered. The HRC South Florida Steering Committee continued to show up in the community alongside our volunteers, LGBTQ+ community and allies. We assisted pro-equality candidates with phone-banking. We made calls and sent emails to our senators urging them to vote yes for the Equality Act, and we helped elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President! This past MLK Day of Service, we also volunteered to beautify TransInclusive Group’s safehouse for trans women. We proved that when we get “Together Again,” great things can be accomplished. This evening would not be a success without the support of the LGBTQ+ community, but also those among you that identify as our allies - we see you, we appreciate you and with your persistent advocacy, you are helping us make strides in the fight for equality. Also, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to our local HRC Steering Committee, the 2022 Dinner & Auction Committee and our team of dedicated volunteers. Months of planning and hard work have gone into this evening - without your energy, excitement, creativity and commitment none of this would have been possible. We are finally “Together Again!” Let’s see what we can do!

Yours in Equality, Jasmin Lewis, Brett Michael Seibert and Zachary Durand 2022 HRC South Florida Dinner Tri-Chairs

Honoree EQUALITY AWARD The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County is being honored at this year’s HRC South Florida Dinner for it’s work on its BIG Pride LGBTQ+ Mentoring Program. More than 50,000 students in Broward County Schools identify as LGBTQ+, including 7,800 who identify as transgender. LGBTQ+ youth typically face a unique set of challenges: Lack of acceptance from their parents and peers, persistent bullying, gender identity development, fear of disclosure, homelessness, among others. Nationwide, LGBTQ+ teens have been found to be six times more likely to experience symptoms of depression and four times more likely to attempt suicide, experience suicidal thoughts or engage in self-harm. While Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County has traditionally served LGBTQ+ children and young adults, its BIG Pride program is intentional in addressing the needs and vulnerabilities by providing trusting, confidential, one-to-one mentoring relationships between Bigs and LGBTQ+ Littles. Each one of these matches is professionally supported by a Case Manager who oversees the safety of the children, the successful development of the relationships, the accomplishment of pre-set goals and the outcomes. Children enrolled in our Big Pride program have shown increased levels of self-esteem, academic improvement, parental support, and juvenile justice avoidance.

PERFORMANCE BY CRYSTAL

WATERS

“One of the most influential women of Dance Music”

-mixmag

When you hear the name Crystal Waters, you immediately think of a woman whose talent and brand has sustained her 30-year career, yet the span of her work continues to engage new fans and please her enormous base. In fact, this pioneer, innovator and dance music legend was also named by Billboard Magazine as “one of the most successful Dance Music Artists in the history of the Billboard Dance Music Chart.” Crystal is best known for her string of domestic and international number one dance hits in the 1990’s, including her 1991 signature smash, “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)”, which garnered her 3 American Music Award nominations and made her an international sensation. “Gypsy Woman” became a #1 global smash because of its socially-conscious lyrics and positively infectious hook.

Crystal was firmly embraced by the dance community and in 1994, she again found mainstream success with “100% Pure Love,” which became one of the longest charting songs, residing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a whopping 48 weeks. Along with her 3 American Music Award nominations, she went on to win 6 ASCAP Songwriter Awards, an MTV Video Music Award nod and 4 Billboard Music Awards, which she won for the TopSelling Hot Dance Music Club Play Single. Born in Camden, NJ, right outside of Philadelphia, Crystal comes from a truly accomplished musical family. “My dad had a hit record in the early ‘60’s and appeared on American Bandstand, performing under the name Junior Waters,” she recalls, and her entertainer lineage doesn’t stop there. Crystal is the grand-niece of Ethel Waters, the legendary Academy Award nominee (Pinky, 1949) and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. After high school, she was accepted to the prestigious Howard University to study computer science. Yet, a chance meeting with a psychic first inspired her to consider singing. “She said there was something I wasn’t doing with my voice,” Crystal recalls. “She also told me that I would not be happy until I did it.” Crystal then set out on a singer / songwriter career writing her first of many hits to come, “Gypsy Woman.” Crystal’s impressive 13 #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits and 11 Top 10 songs have resulted in well over 100 million streams on Spotify, YouTube, and 2.12 million followers on Shazam at the very least. Adding to her musical accolades, she had another #1 hit in Europe in 2009, with Alex Gaudino called “Destination Calabria,” it achieved the #1 Pop Chart status in over 40 countries around the world. Later, her single “Testify” with UK producer Hi-Fi Sean was in top rotation on BBC Radio 2, a song that to date, she still gets asked to perform. Yet another #1 club hit was in 2018 with “I Am House,” produced by Sted-E & Hybrid Heights and released on Kenny Dope’s Dopewax Records, with Kenny being a 4x Grammy nominee himself. This would bring her overall tally of hits to 16 #1’s and Top 10 singles in over 15 countries to date. In 2021, a feature on RuPaul’s Drag Race drove Crystal’s ‘100% Pure Love’ to re-enter the Top 10 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Sales Chart. With millions of new streams, and the decision to make it the year’s official anthem of NYC Pride, it ignited Universal Music to re-release the song with brand new remixes. Her recent release “Party People” with Dj Spen and remix by Michael Grey garnered major support from the likes of BBC Radio One, Nexus Radio, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Low-Steppa and many others. With her studio work in constant flow, Crystal is on deck to work with some renowned producers on more amazing new upcoming releases. There’s more to this world-renowned artist than just releasing music. Since the start of her career, Crystal has been a staunch advocate for LBGTQ Rights and AIDS research. She was also involved in the creation of the Soundexchange Bill passed by the US Congress in 2008. (Soundexchange collects and distributes digital performance royalties for recording artists) and was invited to the White House along with several other artists for their efforts. Crystal also walked the halls of Capitol Hill speaking to Congress several times, advocating for the passage of the Performance Rights Act, which seeks to correct a loophole that allows AM and FM radio broadcasters to not pay performers for their work. Crystal has begun touring once again with the success of her songs “House of Light,” released on her own IAH Records label which landed a Top 10 position in the UK’s Music Week Pop Dance Chart and “Never Enough” out now on Atlantic Records. “I Am House” is not only the name of Crystal’s record label and #1 Billboard Club hit, but also the name of her champion monthly radio podcast which features the latest and greatest vocal House Music, reaching over 6.7 million listeners and fans from all around the world. IAH Radio can be heard on SiriusXM Channel 141, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8pm ET as well.

WHAT WE DO The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BUILDING AND DEMONSTRATING POLITICAL POWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program

dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.

Public Education & Research produces written resources and conducts original quantitative and qualitative research exploring the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Global Partnerships provides capacity-building and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQ+ advocates from around the world to strengthen movements and advance global LGBTQ+ equality. HBCU Program is the only national project that partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities on establishing an LGBTQ+-inclusive campus climate. Health & Aging provides resources and training to help thousands of healthcare facilities adopt inclusive policies and practices to better serve LGBTQ+ patients and employees. HIV & Health Equity develops public education and capacitybuilding programs to address the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black and Latinx communities. Religion & Faith provides faith leaders with opportunities

and tools to stand up for equality even as opponents attempt to weaponize faith against LGBTQ+ people.

Transgender Justice Initiative leads economic empowerment programs, capacity-building initiatives, community engagement efforts, and public safety education campaigns that combat the discrimination faced by transgender people. Welcoming Schools is the only bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+-specific training and resources with an intersectional lens, developed for use in elementary schools. Workplace Equality advances equality for LGBTQ+ workers through the adoption and implementation of inclusive policies, practices, and benefits in the U.S. and beyond.

Youth Well-Being provides professional development to over 5,000 youth-serving professionals annually, through the annual Time to THRIVE conference, webinars, participation at major national convenings, and by amplifying the stories of HRC Youth Ambassadors. The program also convenes HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. Updated 10-26-2021

Transgender and non-binary people are your neighbors, co-workers, family members and friends. And when you or your friends and family are the targets of hate, violence and discrimination, you act. The Human Rights Campaign is actively working to advocate for the rights and lives of the transgender and non-binary community–but we all must do more–can we count you in? As LGBTQ+ people and allies, we have a responsibility to fight for EVERYONE in our movement. Now is the time to get loud, get visible, and spread awareness on behalf of transgender and non-binary people. So please take the actions below–but don’t stop there. The more people who show they care, including allies and trans and non-binary people who speak up for the most marginalized in our community, the more hearts and minds we will change.

State legislatures are attacking LGBTQ+ folks, particularly trans people, left and right. Show antiequality legislators that we won’t tolerate any more bullying and discrimination.
