The Humber Renewables Awards 2018 crowned nine organisations that have showcased innovation, growth and talent in their field. Businesses who triumphed at the event, held at the Hallmark Hotel in North Ferriby on Friday night, included Spencer Group, Ron Dearing UTC and McAusland Turner. Representing the organisers, the Hull Daily Mail and Grimsby Telegraph, south bank business editor David Laister said we are now â&#x20AC;&#x153;living and breathing the green dream as potential and possibility become business realityâ&#x20AC;?. Hullâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Spencer Group was crowned Humber Renewables Champion with judges impressed by a strong track record leading to record results, as it completes two significant projects and powers on with an ambassadorial role in education and encouraging women in manufacturing and engineering. Innovative skill-builders Modal Training and Ron Dearing UTC both claimed honours on the night, as they took the Excellence in Renewables Skills and Training and Renewables Education awards respectively.

Fledgling micro-generation start-up MyEnergi took the Green Innovation award, having attracted backing from former Tesco chief Sir Terry Leahy, while Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal lead, ABPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sarah West, took the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering accolade, having gone from Royal Navy commander to heading up the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest biomass reception facility. Small Business of the Year was picked up by McAusland Turner Ltd, the Hullbased marine surveyor and consultant of 130 years standing. It has experienced significant growth in turnover from contracts with major offshore wind developers. The winner of the Community Project Award was HOTA. The leading training provider had three nominations on the night. Large business went to Singleton Birch. The Melton Ross quarry turned to anaerobic digestion when its intensive energy use started to blast the bottom line. Now it has bought out the technology provider and is setting a growth plan from the south bank, having established third-party sites.

We are engaging with organisations globally who want to tap into the extensive Hull and Humber pool of renewable expertise

he scale of the Humber’s renewables sector would have been “difficult to comprehend” as recently as five years

ago. That was the message from Siemens Gamesa’s head of port operations Barry Denness, speaking at the awards night on behalf the headline sponsor. The scale of the work Siemens Gamesa is doing in both the region and across the country can best be described with one statement: the company is only a quarter of the way through its plans. From growing up in Hessle Road and attending Hull’s Trinity House School, Mr Denness now heads up the ports operations for the renewables giants. Mr Denness said: “Many members of my family, including my father and grandfather, were trawlermen – an industry that saw its demise in the 1970s and 1980s. “I find myself now talking to an audience of industry leaders in a sector which only five years ago would have been difficult to comprehend in terms of the scale and importance. I for one am very proud to be at the centre of what really is an energy revolution. “This is the fourth year Siemens Gamesa has been involved in the Humber Renewables Awards, and we are thrilled to be playing our part once again.”

A lot has changed since Siemens Gamesa first arrived in Hull at the end of 2016. Going back further though, it is just 15 years since the UK’s first offshore wind farm was installed off the coast of North Wales. Today, Siemens Gamesa has helped the industry reach 25 per cent of its intended capacity.

Hull is now delivering 1Gw of offshore wind capacity, but the work has only just begun. Plans are now firmly in place to begin creating bigger, 81.5m blades at the Hull factory from 2020, and the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm will become the world’s largest of its kind – capable of generating a further 1.4Gw of electricity.

Mr Denness said: “I am pleased to say that over the past 12 months we, as a port operation, have come of age. “Having delivered from Hull more than 1Gw of offshore generating capacity, we have caught the gaze of the renewable industry, globally, and the Siemens Gamesa team in Hull is now directly collaborating with clients and service providers from Australia, Japan and the US Eastern seaboard. “We are working with the Ron Dearing UTC, supporting Project Aura and working with Green Port Hull, as well as engaging with other organisations globally who want to tap into the extensive Hull and Humber pool of renewable expertise.” Mr Denness said the finalists at the Renewables Awards should be proud to be at the forefront of the future. Spencer Group was named as Humber Renewables Champion at the awards on Friday night, staged by the Hull Daily Mail, Grimsby Telegraph and Humberbusiness. com Judges were impressed by Spencer Group’s extensive green credentials, including excellent progress on two major renewable energy projects, as well as how it has played a leading role in developing a skilled future workforce and encouraging women into the manufacturing and engineering sectors. They said: “A record year for infrastructure projects has seen a major waste from energy plant all but realised in the city, while this multi-disciplinary engineering company sends out talented technicians north to add further biomass capability for a regional giant. “The ambassadorial role in education, place marketing and women in manufacturing and engineering makes this a standout company with a clear conscience and pride in its roots.” Spencer Group is one of the UK’s largest privately owned multi-disciplinary engineering companies and has an outstanding track record of delivering major renewable energy infrastructure projects. The award recognised Spencer Group’s work on two of the company’s biggest-ever projects, both major green energy schemes. Spencer Group has steered Energy Works, a £200m green energy power plant in Hull, on a seven-year journey from concept to reality. Energy Works will begin generating electricity later this year using an innovative energy recovery process called fluidised bed gasification. Renewables Awards 2018 Best Project or Installation

ace Bank offshore wind farm â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the biggest yet off the Humber â&#x20AC;&#x201C; took the Best Project accolade. Ă&#x2DC;rstedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest addition to the emerging East Coast Hub, the 570MW array, anchored in Grimsby, was completed as the new year was welcomed in. During construction it saw the town surpass the 1GW installed capacity milestone as it became the sixth to be served from the port in a decade of delivery. Truly pan-Humber, it was also the first to use Hullâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Siemens Gamesa blades, with the Green Port used for assembly staging. Jason Ledden led the delivery from Port of Grimsby East and was joined by operations colleagues who are now responsible for

performance. He said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is great to receive local recognition for this project. I feel humbled to accept it, a massive team put this project together, and it was delivered on time and on budget, and it is great to have something out there generating green energy for half a million homes.â&#x20AC;? The 91-turbine development sits 20 miles off the Lincolnshire coast and is the Danish giantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second regional farm after Westermost Rough. The judges said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This was a fantastic project, delivered ahead of schedule, bringing significant investment to the region.â&#x20AC;?

Renewables Awards 2018 Excellence in Renewables Skills and Training

ringing simulators to the high seas, a ÂŁ7m investment saw Grimsby Instituteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Modal venture pick up the Excellence in Renewable Skills and Training accolade. Principal Gill Alton collected the award, and told how the hi-tech haven of simulators for shipping, ports, logistics and haulage sectors was already welcoming international delegates as well as those from the Humber. Modal Training is located just off the port estate in Imminghamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Middleplatt Road, and the first phase opened in February last year. The latest element, road transport, will be unveiled later this month. Mrs Alton said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have positioned

ourselves to provide the solution to skills shortages in the area. It is a broad spectrum, we have everything from marine, through to cranage and truck driving. We have taken the labour market intelligence in to a vibrant training situation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is more efficient, it is safer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; some of the most dangerous scenarios are around ports and maritime â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and we are in a position now where we have the UK centre for training people. We have already seen people fly in from Australia and Spain.â&#x20AC;? The judges said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This ÂŁ7m investment in state-of-the-art simulation facilities brought training and competency testing in maritime and logistics roles to a new level.â&#x20AC;?

on Dearing UTC scooped the Renewables Education category, just eight months on from opening its doors last September. Judges were impressed with the partnerships forged with leading players in the green economy and the use of virtual reality tools to bring real-world offshore work to the classroom â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and by the fact it is a new school and now oversubscribed for the next intake. The UTCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impressive line-up of partners includes Ă&#x2DC;rsted, the University of Hull, Siemens Gamesa, Spencer Group, KCOM, Smith & Nephew and RB. Principal Sarah Pashley said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re delighted by this accolade and by the recog-

Renewables Awards 2018 Green Innovation

first award on British soil came for Binbrook’s Myenergi, with the micro-generation specialist taking the Innovation gong for its work on smart systems for home or commercial renewable applications, having also caught the eye at a large trade conference in Dublin last year. Inventor Lee Sutton, who created the Zappi electric vehicle charger and Eddi power diverter, said: “We are so very pleased to receive the award. It is great to be recognised for all the hard work we have put in for just over two years now.” Referring to the backing from former Tesco chief Sir Terry Leahy and investment house founder Bill Currie, Mr Sutton said: “We have attracted some very high-profile

investors, they are well behind us, and we have some very big growth plans. It is all happening faster than we expected.” A team of 18 is now assembled, after starting with just a few as the pieces were picked up from 4 Eco Ltd, which was hit by the slashing of solar support, with Mr Sutton, then one of three directors, deciding to go it alone, before being joined by business development director Jordan Brompton, also a finalist in the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering category. The judges said: “Invention is the key to innovation, and we were taken by the huge strides made by such a fledgling organisation in the micro-generation sphere.”

Medium/Large Business of the Year

ingleton Birch’s self-realisation of the intensive energy use, and the way it acted to address spiralling costs, saw it win the Medium/Large Business of the Year Award. The Melton Ross quarry not only invested in and expanded its on-site anaerobic digestion plant, it then went a stage further and bought out the company that looked after it, and third-party sites it had subsequently developed. David Talbot, chief executive of process industry partnership Catch, collected the accolade on behalf of his members, who were unable to attend. The accolade came during a busy week when a major £350,000 investment to house the new Birch Energy

division and laboratories was signed off, underlining the progress made since the acquisition. It is a remarkable turnaround for the company, with a history of gas-guzzling sports cars to switch to green energy, with charities now benefiting from dividends. The firm employs about 100 people and its majority shareholder is the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust. The judges said: “The self-realisation and action taken on energy costs and generation by this intensive user really caught the eye, but was taken to the next level when the technology delivery was also acquired.”

Renewables Awards 2018 Community Project

raining provider HOTA was crowned winner of the Community Project at this year’s Humber Renewables Awards. Established in 1987 and based in Hull, HOTA, the Quality Training Provider, offers nationally approved training and tailor-made bespoke courses to meet individual and company specific training needs. A limited company with charity status, all surplus funds generated are ploughed back into enhancing its training facilities at The Cullen and The Ellis buildings in Malmo Road and its Albert Dock site. Karen Shepherd, chief executive of HOTA,

was delighted to win the Community Project award. She said: “Supporting other charities and local community groups has always been high on HOTA’s agenda. “The annual charity dunk has always proved very popular and, over the years, this event has helped raise thousands of pounds for both local and national charities.” HOTA also utilises its facilities and staff to assist local companies such as nurseries, schools and other charities with affordable training in health and safety, first aid and firefighting.

Women in Manufacturing and Engineering

ssociated British Ports’ Sarah West picked up the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering Award. The Grimsby woman and former Royal Navy Commander heads up Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal, the world’s largest biomass reception port facility. She said: “This isn’t just for me, but the whole team, a great team, that is really professional, and I’m really proud of what we do, servicing our customer Drax, which we have a great relationship with.” The £130m investment welcomes vessels from Baton Rouge, laden with pellets. Taking the helm of it, and her first job on “civvy street” after a remarkable Armed Forces career, the former Toll Bar student

said: “It has been a bit of a culture shock, but in many ways it is very similar. I have a strong team around me with a real work ethic, professional and wanting to please. It is a different ‘mission,’ a different customer, but it is the same management style.” The judges said: “With responsibility for 200,000 tonnes of cargo at any one time, and a dedicated 100-strong team, it is a challenging new feedstock for an exceptional client. The role has been embraced with enthusiasm.”
