Biography
My name is Humberto Bermúdez, my friends call me Beto, I’m mexican, I have a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering also I’m photographer, traceur/freerunner and AIESECer. I was born on 31 December 1988 in Mexico City but I spend most part of my life living in the metropolitan area of DF, in a small town called Cuautitlán Izcalli, except for two years I spend in San Luis Potosi because of my fahter job. Nowadays I’m based in the heart of Mexico City and I love being here!! because is the most random, biggest, chaotic but awesome city in Mexico. As I said before, I’m mechanical engineer graduated from the Superior School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (ESIME) in the National Polytechnic Institute. I do not remember why or how, but since I was a kid, I always said that when I grew up I will become mechanical engineer, now that I have accomplished my biggest goal in my life until now I think I have already grew up, or it seems to be like that. In the photographic field, I always like it, I remember that every familiar reunion or any chance I had of have the camera on my hands I was shooting to capture those instants. Then when I turned 18 my father gave me as birthday gift my first digital reflex camera and incredible Rebel XT Canon, a few months later I meet the founder of “DFinitivo.com”, a blog about Mexico City’s entertainment, culture, life style and music, at that moment my journey in the photojournalism began. In 2011 I start my own project call “Réflex Mx” with two friends I met during the time I collaborate in DFinitivo, a few week later I started my own blog since then I have been working on these projects in my free time. About Parkour/Freerunning stuff, well for those that don’t know anything about this, Parkour/Freerunning is a urban sport develop in the suburbs of Paris by David Belle, Sebastian Foucan and the Yamakasi team, the aim of this is go from point A to point B in the most efficient way overcoming every obstacle you find in your way, also this concept is applied to your personal and professional life. To be more graphic in the physical part of the Parkour/Freerunning, if you saw the first scenes of “Casino Royale” movie (James Bond more recent ones) you will see the 007 chasing a guy, all those crazy movements and big jumps or if you have ever seen the Yamakasi and District 13 you will understand better what I’m talking about, of course I haven’t reach that level, but I will try for sure. After the brief explanation of what is Parkour/Freerunning I will tell you that I began trainning in 2008 after I met a photographer of the Ministry of Culture in Mexico City that told where people in Mexico train this incredible sport. Since 2008 until early 2011 I was very involved in the mexican parkour/freerunning scene that in 2010 I became Field Agent and official photographer of Urban Freeflow, one of the biggest and oldest groups for parkour based in London. During these years I meet Raul Pineda, he used to train parkour but most of the time he was taking pictures, just like me. In february 2011 I get notice about AIESEC, thanks to my friend Raul Pineda and his intensive tweet sessions, I went to the informational sessions and in March 21, 2011 I became an AIESECer in LC IPN in ICX GCDP, the first project I was port of in this area was “Sharing Languages” in which we get 3 exchanges. Then I went to my first AIESECer event Tequilazo, It was amazing I met a lot of people that now a days are good friends. In June 2011 I was applied to the NST staying as Media Manager then it was time for my first congress, the epic EVEREST 2011, the curious fact was that it was my first conference and I was part of the OC, as their official photographer and staff, after that I went to almost all conferences of AIESEC in Mexico. My first international congress was NAFTA Summit and fortunately I was part of the OC Team, my role OVCP Comm, this congress was a big challenge because we did it with a little bit more than one month and all delegates were amazed and they enjoy it a lot, in that congress I met some good friends of Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and the States. By the end of 2011 I started working on Ericsson, in the Global Network Center, my first job as graduate and until now the tough work experience I will have for a while, because I face learn a whole new engineering, understand the dynamic of the industry and get used to weird schedules, working nights, days and afternoons, and this was not an obstacle to continue doing things in AIESEC and going to almost all conferences =). Then here I am, ending 2012, still working in Ericsson, being part of NST again, now as Media Producer, participating in the EDGE Social Business challenge, trying to improve my photoblog and blog, and making my application for the MC 13-14 the most complicated decision in my graduated life until now because of the challenge it represent, but I know I will enjoy this and the next time I will have to write my bio for sure this experience will be there.

Why are you applying for MCVP 2012/2013 of AIESEC in Mexico?
I’m applying because being part of the national team mean a big challenge to continue developing my leadership, to contribute to the achievement of the 2015 vision and be part of the growth of our entity nationally. Also this experience will allow me to meet a lot of people, those with whom I will share knowledge, who will inspire me and I will inspire them. Other big reason is because I can drive certain actions and run projects nationally that impact positively our society and will help people to notice about their potential to do great things. Finally I see the MC as the next step I need to take in my AIESEC career because I will be able to synchronize it with my personals projects and professional development, all this by putting in practice the knowledge I recently get because of my professional experiences, workshops and my almost 2 years experience in AIESEC.
What is your leadership to you? Briefly describe your style of leadership. For me leadership is when people have the skills to drive others to achieve their goals, is sharing knowledge and help people to discover their potential and help them to discover how to use it for their own profit. Also leadership means be creative, have emotional intelligence, be a visionary, be responsible because you will have a lot of influence in people, be empathetic and be able to motivate people to follow you. When I’m leading teams I like to make them feel their work is one gear of complex mechanism that makes easy it’s movement, I trust a lot in my team that’s why I try to be accurate when I select them, but in case I cannot select them I tried to find their strengths and take advantage of them. I like be flexible but I when it’s needed I’m strict, also I try to have fun while working because when we’re having fun better results we achieve and hard task get into easy ones. Also I look for maintain balance between the interests of the team members and the goals of the project. When there is a disagreement I will encourage the team to get to middle points.
What organizational culture would you like to see AIESEC having? What would be your key strategies to foster these? I think our current organizational culture is cool, but we can enhance it. Firstly I would like to show more people the ONE MORE philosophy and invite them to apply it, what is the ONE MORE philosophy?, well when I used to practice Parkour/Freerunning I met the Traceur Project team and every time I trained with them they told me to do one more push up, one more jump, one more whatever I was going to do, even when I was exhausted and close to my limits, but why ONE MORE? because that way I always was pushing myself to do something more, to don’t give up and by doing ONE MORE you do something easy that increase your potential step by step constantly, getting faster and faster that growth. Secondly I would like to promote creative and collaborative environments without regarding organizational positions, just encourage people that if they have an idea an it is a good one, don’t wait to have certain position to implement it, instead of that look for support and start it, because now I’m seeing that many people wait till they have the position to start doing things, and also people that held those positions do not promote this, sometimes they block it, it’s proved that creative environments result into innovation and it will provide us our ONE MORE fuel to achieve our goals.
Share with us 3 of your strengths on which you will leverage during your MC year and how they will contribute to a successful 2012-2013 MC term; as well as tell us 3 of your weaknesses on which you would like to work on during the term.
Strengths Creativity: I always have been a creative person that is looking to solve problems or issues wherever I’m at, also I like to encourage people to develop their creativity, the question I always ask myself is “Why not?”, so I will use this strength to improve the performance of Comm & IM by developing strategies, creating products and troubleshooting the problems we will face. Adaptability: I have experience in many different areas facing their problems, for example in my professional life I had to learn a whole new engineering and work in different shifts (day, night and afternoon) all this in short periods of time as result I learn how to adapt my life style and take advantage of it. I will use this strength synchronize my work with the other areas looking for the middle points when disagreements and when we face unexpected changes I’ll be able to manage it and take advantage. Troubleshooting mindset: The best experience I get while working in the Network Operation Center at Ericsson was developing troubleshooting mindset. Troubleshooting mindset is be aware that everything is connected and a small problem can become a huge one if it is not attended in time, also it is know that you have to view the whole picture and start making zoom to go specific to find the cause of the issue, also I learned that you need to know when and who to engage when problems increase in number and scope. I will use this to try to prevent problems and to face them if they occur, being able to engage others and investigate further if necessary until the problem is resolved.
Weaknesses
Be too straight talking, sometimes when I have to said what I think about something or provide feedback i tend to be very direct, sometimes even rude so many times people confuse this with being critic and mean. Because I’m always get too much involved in what I do, sometimes I look for solutions to problems that I’m not responsible to resolve, so I propose ideas to solve them even when people never ask me bothering them sometimes. I like to go to the bottom of things when I’m involved too much in something spending some time for this and getting a little bit distract of what I need to do. I like to go to the bottom of things when I’m involved too much in something spending some time for this and getting a little bit distract of what I need to do.
Strategic thinking Analyze the current state of AIESEC in Mexico including both weaknesses and strengths. What do you see as the main bottlenecks and what strategies/solutions would you propose? The main problem we’re facing is our EFFICIENCY, the LC’s have a lot of Human Resources but they’re having problems to achieve big results, what we need to help LC’s to improve is how they manage this resource to achieve those big results, so what can be done on Comm area is work on how we promote those people who have been working hard and use their example to motivate the rest, this testimonies can be videos, text and images delivering them by using our internal communication channels but also this material can be used as external promotion, parallel to this we need to have a good R&R incentives (workshops with partners, etc.) to increasing the effect of “if you work hard and achieve your goals, you will be recognized and rewarded”. What we need to do is make feel all the members an important part of our achievements and create horizontal communication so they can be heard. Also we need to “Spread the Word” of what is AIESEC and is offering to young people, PROMOTION has been our Achilles Heel even that we have already improve in it, nevertheless we steel have too much to work. What we can do now is focus on create multimedia content that can be shared in media, via social networks and used as promotional stuff. Provide face to AIESEC in México, let people know who is running this organization at every level and look for Joint Ventures with others youth organizations, get the recognition as the Youth voice because we will be the first driver or youth organizations. Finally that our information is always spread is a tough problem, the transitions processes are complicated, we don’t have a good Storage flow for the information we produce, so what would I do? Continue the Learning Center Project run by the current MCVP Comm, Eunice, strengthen the deployment of the Media Bank I develop ensuring its correct use, continue the creation of processes, guidelines and procedures guaranteeing the availability of all this information in one place with several backups.
List the exchange growth opportunities that AIESEC in Mexico has. How would you ensure LCs leverage these opportunities to increase AIESEC in Mexico’s exchange performance? *Increased interest in having experience abroad between young people, and the recognition of it for job opportunities. *Growth of demand for foreign languages courses. *Experience membership holding EB and other leadership positions. *Partnerships with Dale Carnegie and Auker as Learning & Content Partners. *Increased presence in Mexico due to the new extensions and Interest groups in big cities of Mexico ( Mexicalli, Tijuana, Cancún, Merida, etc) *Better relations between LC’s *Mexico is in the top 10 of ICT industry. To ensure all this growth opportunities we need to implement IT tools that enhance our process, have available all our information to reduce time in creating documents, brochures, promotional stuff, etc. Internal Communication will be the tool to motivate and continue engaging our membership to balance the number of members and our exchanges results, also Internal comm can be used to let them know about basics of our processes and avoid loosing time in trainings for basics stuff and focused those on more complicated processes. External Communications will help to increase our positioning, engage other youth organizations and promote us as their leadersstakeholders so we can recruit EP’s from those organizations as well develop ICX projects with them. Also we need to take advantage of all the stories of trainees, EP’s, partners etc and use them for promotional campaigns focus on improve our positioning with companies, universities NGO’s and other youth organizations.
What should be the focus for AIESEC in Mexico 12.13? Please explain. Work on become the leaders of the IGN and NAFTA regions in exchanges results as well as be the first driver of youth organizations. Why become the first drive of youth organizations? because we need to accomplish the AIESEC 2015 vision and if we develop leaders we need to prove we are the leader between our segment youth organizations. How we can achieve this? creating partnerships with these organizations, showing them what AIESEC can offer to them and that they can join our programs and will benefit of them. I think that by doing this AIESEC will increase their presence and will engage more people, also will be able to develop more projects achieving our goals of exchanges and we will be really close to the 2015 vision that says “ reach all young people in the world, become the youth voice and be first choice partner”.
How can the organization work towards AIESEC 2015 to achieve such a growth while improving the relevance of the experiences we offer and the sustainability of our results? *Creating connections with other youth organizations. *Improving the efficiency of the LC’s by providing them workshops and trainings focused in certain areas that enhance their skills. *Strengthen or develop the partnerships with universities. *Link the iGCDP program with the oGIP and oGCDP, using the first as promotional tool. *Developing new products for our current partners. *Looking for more Learning and Content Partners. *Give recognition to our memebership that attend conferences and/or congresses, like diplomas and/or recognitions letters, so they will be able to use this for their professional life, this will help us to promote ourselves with companies. *Take advantage of the Alumni that are involved with us to share their experience in AIESEC and how it help them on their professional life as well provide trainings to the membership. *Involved Alumni in the sales process with companies, specific on trainings and business rendezvous. *Improve our Storage and Data base management. *Create merchandising as method of promotion and get sustainability. *Benefit from our Reception Weekends, develop partnerships with Tourism Ministries and run this projects as iGCDP ones, so members will be focused on creating the exchanges meanwhile those events provide finance resources and help us to promote us with young people.
How would you like to see AIESEC in Mexico in July 2013? Please identify and explain the strategies that will lead the organization to achieve goals. I see AIESEC in Mexico as the driver of mexican youth organizations, having a constant rhythm of growth to become the leader in exchanges of the IGN and NAFTA regions, with presence in more cities and with all the current extensions as full membership LC’s and new extensions working to become full members. How we can accomplish this: *Ensuring we run our processes more efficiently, implementing IT tools for this. *Having a better Storage and Data Base Management to reduce time in searching info and when we need to develop any kind of document and/or multimedia material. *Professionalize our membership with help of Learning & Content Partners *Developing a Creative and Collaborative environment to innovate in our projects and operations. *Innovate and improve our Educations Cycles, specifically by using Internal Communication.* *Continue the development of our website, making it more attractive to gain traffic and use it as an other product for our current and the new partners.
For each AIESEC Programmes in the Experiential Leadership Development phases, please list one concrete strategy to grow, consolidate or mature each of them in AIESEC in Mexico? (oGIP, oGCDP, iGIP, iGCDP, TMP, TLP). Develop projects based on iGCDP to improve the foreign languages, leadership and entrepreneurial skills of recent graduates and students in their last semesters, with this we will be adding these young people to the EWA phase of the AIESEC experience and we will have an awesome pool for oGIP and oGCDP. For oGCDP we need to develop partnerships and/or strengthen them with the universities we have relation or we have based LC’s there so we will be able to establish this program as an option for the students for their “Social Service”. For oGIP we need to recruit based on the TN’s found in the system, as well we need to create pre-sales process in partnership with other LC’s or MC’s so we can tell them what kind of EP’s we will be able to recruit and from which universities also we need to recruit recent graduates of Master Degrees programs. We can improve our results in iGIP by looking to create partnerships with the industries that are having the biggest growth and want to expand operations worldwide or in a certain region. Also we need to collect the testimonies of trainees and of people working in the partner company, like employees, managers etc and use all this material for the promotional campaigns and as sales material. For TMP and TLP we need to professionalize this experience, give recognitions that can be used for the future professional life of the members, take advantage of the relation we have or we can develop with the universities where we have LC’s and get more learning partners that give us workshops and trainings to improve our operations but also that can be used outside AIESEC adding value to the experiences.
Specific questions Make a SWOT of the current status of the area, how can you improve on the weaknesses and how can you prevent the threats?
Strengths:
Weaknesses:
-IT Development. -Membership with IT backgrounds. -New website and self hosting. -Presence in the best universities with our LC’s -Partnerships with recognized companies.
-Low membership with graphic design background. -External Positioning. -Low participation of LC’s in requested activities by the MC. -Lack of standardization. -Lack of storage processes.
Opportunities:
Threats:
-Social Media. -Podio implementation. -50 anniversary. -Internal Communications.
-Loss of information and multimedia material because of not having storage processes. -Wrong external promotion due to lack of standardization. -Fast changes in leadership roles. -Failures in internal communications.
Please define how both Information Management and Communications can strongly contribute to reaching better results in number of EPs, TNs, and Quality of all the phases of ELD? Please make separate answers for each. IM & Communications can support and enhance the results of TN’s, EP’s and in our ELD programs because this area play a key role, because we provide the channels to establish communications with the Companies we want to become partners, the students that go abroad thanks to our exchanges programs and with those who join our organization structure and develop themselves via ELD programs, but not only we establish those channels, also we create the messages that need to be send. But how we can do this?, specifically: Communications: Creating a news section on our website so we will be able to get more traffic on it. Developing Newsletters for our EP’s with the most relevant information for their exchange, and other one to promote our GCDP projects and GIP opportunities with other entities. Professionalizing our membership by getting sponsored workshops, trainings etc. Developing recognitions for our members who attend conferences, congresses, workshops and/or summits, like diplomas or congratulations letters. Look for Learning & Content Partners that provide us sponsored workshops and trainings. Creating a Hall of Fame in our website where the stories of our Alumni will be available for everybody, as well create a section where we can notice who is running AIESEC on that term. For R&R continue the section in the newsletter, give fees, merchandising and other kind of incentives for this. Standardize our promotional campaigns. Create official AIESEC merchandising like T-shirts, sun glasses, Hoodies, stickers etc, assigning the production of these to the LC’s (one or two products per LC). Coordinated with TM develop the IM & Comm education cycle, as well use Internal Comm for the education cycles of the others areas. Information Management: Continue the current IT projects, Website development, Learning Center, Media Bank. Create a help desk team with its own processes for troubleshooting and SLA’s. Analyze the current use of IT tools and improving it, looking for the easiest way to implement it so members were be able to adapt to it quickly and easily. Develop Storage processes that helps to concentrate our information, procedures, guidelines, documented processes, multimedia files etc. (Continue with the Knowledge Management project currently running). Strengthen the processes for the “Protection of Private Information”.
Please define the most important channels and tools you would use in order to improve the Internal & External Communication in the country. Internal Communication: *Podio, implement the use of workspaces according to the functional area *Newsletter via mail, one for all membership, one for EP’s and have the backup with google sites. *News section in our web site (changes or new designations in our organizational structure that can be use for internal and external communication). *Facebook groups (Only to share testimonies videos, the images of “We love your Work” and “ Did you know that” and some others announcements that encourage people to verify their mails and Podio). *Images showing quick information like curious facts, R&R, notifications, etc that can be shared via mail, FB or any other social media. ( “Did you know that”, “We Love your Work” “My AIESEC story”) *Google Apps (Calendar, Drive, Hangouts, Maps, Sites, etc), WiziQ, Adobe Connect, Any Meeting. Whatsapp (with my MC team, NST and LCVP’s Comm & IM)
External Communication inside the AIESEC Network: *Newsletter for TN’s, GIP and GCDP to foreign OGX contacts, national and local ones. *Congresses and Conferences special Newsletter. External Communication: *Website with News section, Hall of Fame (Alumni stories and abstracts of who they are), “Who is AIESEC” (Information about the current leaders in MC and LC’s), “My AIESEC story” (testimonies of AIESECers, EP’s, TMP, TLP,Alumni). *Social Media, Facebook fan pages, twitter, pinterest (OGX promotion), youtube, vimeo, youpublisher *Publications in blogs, specialized media and mainstream media.
How could you use the power of the Internal Communication in order to develop a strong Organizational Culture where every member of AIESEC Mexico strives for the same goals? Internal Communication need be horizontal so people will be able to interact and they will feel heard and part of the team, this will help to create stronger connections into our membership, they need to know what is happening. This can be done by promoting a creative and collaborative environment. *Continue the development guidelines for internal communications channels and its management. *Mail: this will be the main internal communication channel and the one that will be use for official notifications. Using it we need to develop Newsletter for EP’s so all OGX information can be shared efficiently, other one for TLP opportunities, conferences etc and continue with the national newsletter where most important and relevant information will be shared, the other ones are for specific use. *Facebook: continue the management of one group per congress (not per edition of it) and the general group, if others areas need to open their groups will be implemented and manage by IM&Comm team. In this channel can run the “Did you know that?” campaign for brief news and some curious facts about AIESEC. *Podio: finish the implementation of Podio as the official project management and internal communication tool for each area and teamworks.
Define in key points of your Media Plan and explain why. Media Production: We need to have material that can be shared in social media and mainstream media (newspapers, magazines, tv, etc), and also can use it for promotional campaigns. *AIESEC stories (EP, TMP and TLP) *Stakeholders stories *EP stories and pictures *Stories of our partners employees that met trainees. *Landscapes pictures of the Cities we’re based for the ICX promotion. *Congress and Conferences pictures. Media Partnerships: To develop media partnerships we will need to separate them in 3 main points, this way we will be able to cover all the range of media, virtual, mainstream, underground, specialized etc, taking the best advantage of each one. *Event Coverage *Publicity *Content Sharing
What should be the key specific approaches and actions in the next term to ensure that our National IT platform enables AIESEC to have overall growth? a.
