How to stay safe on winter roads Snowy weather can be a time for fun, especially for avid skiers or children who relish spending days off from school tossing snowballs and building snow forts. Many adults, however, do not look forward to the snow as much as youngsters do. Snow can be hazardous when driving, but putting snow tires on a vehicle can improve vehicle safety.

According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States. Each winter, snowfall compounds treacherous road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.

It is important to know how to drive when weather conditions are dangerous. It is also wise to outfit a vehicle to reduce its risk of slipping and sliding on icy, snowy roads. Try to wait until snow-clearing teams have salted, plowed and sanded roads before venturing out. * Be sure you can see clearly. Clear off the snow from the windshield, side mirrors and windows so it does not compromise your view.

Also, top off the windshield fluid so you will be able to clear snow and salt kick-up from your windshield. Look for a washer fluid that has an antifreeze component, otherwise, your washer jets and wiper blades could be rendered useless. * Drive slowly. Reduce your speed when driving in inclement weather. It can be more difficult to stop or maneuver around a potential obstacle when conditions are less than ideal.

Traveling at a high speed will increase the risk of accidents. * Leave enough room between you and other motorists. Tailgating is responsible for many accidents, even when there is no snow on the ground. In inclement weather, it can take longer to slow or stop the car after pressing on the brakes. Having an additional space between your car and the one in front of you helps you avoid a collision. * Be aware of black ice. Black ice gets its name from its veritable invisibility. It is so thin and hard to spot, it just looks like the black asphalt of the road. Black ice tends to form in areas that have had snow or ice melt, which then refreezes at night when temperatures drop. Be extra cautious on turns and on highway exit and entrance ramps, where black ice frequently forms. * Steer your car into the skid. Remain calm

and do not panic and jam on the brakes if your car starts to skid. Slamming on the brakes will only exacerbate the skid. Rather, take your foot off the accelerator, allowing the car to naturally slow down as you turn your wheels into the direction the car is skidding. This should help right the car and get you back on track. * Invest in snow tires. Those who live in especially snowy climates and do a lot of driving would be wise to purchase snow tires. Snow tires, also called winter tires, have special tread patterns that offer better traction in snow and ice. They also are made from softer rubber compounds than regular tires that retain their flexibility in cold weather, allowing the tire to conform to the surface of the road. Although many vehicles come with technology to prevent accidents, they cannot do their jobs if tires are not maintaining their grip on the road.

All-season tires are not a replacement for snow tires. All-season tires are designed to work in all sorts of conditions, from rainy weather to dry roads. Therefore, it is better to invest in a set of snow tires that will offer you better protection. When putting snow tires on a car or truck, be sure to do so on all the wheels -- not just the driving wheels. Otherwise you may still risk spin outs or uneven gripping of the road.

It is not a good idea to keep snow tires on all year. Because they are softer, snow tires tend to be more noisy and can wear out faster in warmer weather. Therefore, switch out the tires at the beginning of the snowy season and then before the spring arrives anew.

Pre-owned can be a smart financial bet Many people look to the used-car lots when shopping for vehicles. The allure of a lower price is what drives some consumers to purchase a pre-owned car or truck. Considering many of the used vehicles available are only a few years old, this can be a smart decision.

With the widespread availability of leases, many pre-owned vehicles are lease turn-ins that are only a few years old and in relatively good condition. And because leases limit the amount of mileage that can be put on the vehicle in a given year, chances are a lot of those pre-owned vehicles are also low in mileage.

Used-car pricing almost always will be lower than a vehicle off the lot. This is a big draw to many consumers looking to save money on a vehicle. New cars depreciate as soon as they are driven away from the dealership, so even a vehicle that is only a few months old will cost less than it did brand new.

Buying a pre-owned car at a dealership also may come with a warranty. In order to liquidate

their stock of used vehicles, oftentimes dealerships will certify the vehicles are in good condition and offer warranties that cover many of the same items one would find with a new vehicle.

Certified vehicles can be a safer investment, primarily because the service history and the condition of the car is verifiable. Buying from a private owner may be a riskier purchase.

That doesn't mean that buying a used car from a private owner should be avoided at all costs.

Many private sellers are honest individuals and will offer proof documenting the vehicle's maintenance history. There are also car history reports that can be obtained using the VIN number on the vehicle to check to see if it was in any major accidents or had other kinds of damage.

Buying used is also a green investment. While a brand-new hybrid may certainly save on fuel use, the energy needed to produce that new hybrid can be considerable. Purchasing a used car means less demand for a new one to be made.

Simple steps to a clean interior Much like curb appeal improving the chances of a sale on your home, having a car that is presented well inside and out may boost the amount of money and potential of a resale on your vehicle.

Even vehicle owners who don't anticipate selling their vehicles in the near future should maintain the vehicles to ensure they are safe and sound.

After home and work, a car is where many people spend most of their time. As a result, a vehicle can easily become soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter. Maintaining the interior of your vehicle need not take much time or effort, but it should be done often enough to keep on top of the mess. Here's how to start.

Remove Clutter The first step in cleaning the interior is to remove the excess items that may have accumulated in the car. Busy families tend to leave toys, books or clothing in their vehicles. There also may be discarded food wrappers or beverage containers. People who commute also may accumulate a number of items in their cars, including business materials. These items should be sorted through and put where they belong before tackling the rest of the cleaning work.

Vacuum Much of the dirt and debris that accumulates in vehicles can easily be removed with a vacuum. A shop vac will have enough power to thoroughly clean upholstery and mats. If you do not have one,

Remove the floor mats and set them on a flat surface. Thoroughly vacuum the mats to clear them of dust, dirt, food crumbs, and any other debris. Vacuum the floor of the car as well as any seat upholstery that may be a catch-all for crumbs. Using a soft-bristled

Texting and driving is an epidemic Of the many dangers on the road, text messaging while driving is one that is entirely preventable.

Putting down your phone when driving can prevent thousands of injuries and even death.

According to Students Against Destructive Decisions and Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, instant and text messaging while driving tops the list of driver distractions. Evidence gathered by these organizations has suggested that more than 3,000 vehicle fatalities and about 300,000 collisions a year can be attributed to texting conversations while the vehicle is in motion.

The Web site Distraction.gov notes that, in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.

Some people are now saying that texting while driving is equally as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs in terms of interfering with individuals’ driving abilities.

Texting creates a crash risk 23 times greater than driving while not distracted, according to the United States. Department of Transportation. Although it may seem like a driver’s eyes are off the road for only a nominal amount of time, texting generally requires about 4 seconds, which is 4 seconds drivers are not looking at the road. At average driving speeds, that can mean driving about 360 feet, or the length of a football field, without looking.

But messaging while driving is not the only danger associated with phones and operating a motor vehicle.

A study from Carnegie Mellon University found that

using a cell phone while driving reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by almost 40 percent. Therefore, texting or simply speaking on a phone while driving involves a manual distraction, a visual distraction and a cognitive distraction. All of those distractions add up to trouble.

Many areas have banned the use of cell phones while driving. But such laws are difficult to enforce.

A 2009 Pew Research study on teens and distracted driving found that nearly half of all people between the ages 12 to 17 have at one time ridden in a vehicle where the driver was engaged in texting. Fifty-two percent of phone-owning teens ages 16 to 17 said they have talked on a cell phone while driving.

In response to the rise of texting-while-driving accidents, some organizations have taken an eye-opening approach to educating drivers about the dangers of texting. In 2010, AAA of the Carolinas started airing an evening public service announcement showing graphic images of a teen driver texting then getting involved in a 3-car accident. The ending slogan stated, “You drive, you text, you die.” Other campaigns focus on the positives instead of the negatives, with Facebook groups promoting people who choose not to text and drive.

Any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road can lead to accidents. This includes eating, changing radio stations or addressing unruly children in the back seat. Making an effort to reduce distractions -- especially putting down the phone while in the car -- can considerably reduce accident rates.

Simple tips to regaining fuel efficiency Submitted by: Kevin Plemel, Colony Motor Products Before setting out on a mission to find out how fuel efficient your vehicle is, try to improve your vehicle maintenance and driving habits. The best thing to do is make yourself a checklist or get in the routine of marking down some vehicle data in your owner’s manual or on a calendar. To get you going in the right direction, here are some ideas to help you achieve significantly better fuel economy over time.

1. Tires – At least once a month, make sure to check your tire pressure with a reliable gauge. On many new vehicles, a driver information centre will let you know your tire pressure for each tire, so it’s pretty simple to check. The accuracy of the in-vehicle tire monitor system is very good, so if you are looking at a new vehicle, check to make sure that it has tire pressure monitoring as an option.

2. Air Filter – A plugged-up, dirty air filter is one of the biggest culprits for insufficient fuel economy.

Make sure that you ask about the condition of your air filter the next time that you have an oil change. Most dealerships and quick lube stores will show you the air filter if it’s ready to throw away. If you know where the air filter is located, and you don’t mind a bit of dirt on your hands, it’s a fairly simple task to check it, yourself.

3. Oil – Ensure that you are using oil that is recommended by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The viscosity of your oil allows the moving parts in your engine to function. The main thing to check on a regular basis is your oil

level, texture, and colour. Make sure the level of oil is within the acceptable range, as indicated on the dipstick and that it is not sludgy or grainy. Many new vehicles are going much longer between oil changes. Clean oil will help you to achieve optimal fuel economy.

4. Fuel Filter Life – A fuel filter stops debris from your fuel tank from entering the fuel that goes to the engine, so make sure to get it checked
