Hunters bring in their racks at fish fry Viscount By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
Everyone was welcome to the LeRoy Wildlife Federation Fish Fry and Horn Measuring on Dec. 12. Federation President, Rod Bernauer, says they fried up about 50 pounds of fish, which was caught near La Ronge. The secret to well fried fish is starting with good fillets, says Bernauer. Attendance was low because of the cold weather but many people came out to measure their moose, deer, or elk racks and, in one particular case, a bear skull. The Federation has about 90 members and all were free to come get measured by Cameron Kirzinger who is specially trained as a Henry Kelsey scorer.
Scores will not only be used towards the Federations award banquets in April but also will be put into the Henry Kelsey Big Game Records which is the provincial record book of big game hunting. Ten different types of big game are measured through the Henry Kelsey records, including everything from black bear to caribou, moose, elk, white-tail, and mule deer. Scores are added from, for some animals, 15 points on the rack and two points on the skull for bear. Hunters can bring in animals shot in any area in Saskatchewan as long as the hunter is a member of the Federation. Winners will be announced at the LeRoy Wildlife Federation banquet in April.

Gay-Straight Alliances long overdue in rural schools By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
It was recently announced that the Government of Saskatchewan will continue support for anti-bullying program by distributing $215,000 worth of funding to local organizations. Included in this announcement was Canadian Red Cross Society, Saskatoon Restorative Action Program, and fYrefly Saskatchewan. I am so happy that this list includes fYrefly Saskatchewan, an organization that focuses on education on the LGBTQ+ community in Saskatchewan. It is great to see that the Government is willing to support this organization. They see the ties between bullying and the LGBTQ+ community. Deputy Premier and Education Minister Don Morgan said creating these safe spaces is a priority for the government. Suzy Yim, provincial school coordinator with the fYrefly program in schools, says that they work on inclusive education as a way to create policy, curriculums, and
environments that include everyone. A school having a Gay-Straight Alliance is a visible commitment of a safe space in schools, says Yim, with emphasis on the “safe”, for example, a no bullying space. The straight in Gay-Straight Alliance means that this safe space is not for just homosexual students but allies as well; people who are supportive and accepting of people who are LGBTQ+. Dee Sarauer graduated from HCI in 2016 and was pushing for a GSA. Just having that support in place was a very important part of trying to get a GSA into her high school. “Not everyone is going to get that in their home life or even in their friend life. Just having a group of people there to support you and accept you in your own school and be there to help you figure it out.” According to some, this has been an on going battle to get a GSA in Humboldt and bullying is not just coming from other students but adults as well. Let us dispel some myths about GSAs
in schools; it will not turn a student gay, there is no gay agenda to “convert” people, and yes, people do grow up in rural areas being LGBTQ+, this is not a big city thing. I understand we are a long way from getting a GSA in Humboldt but there will always be students who need one. Just growing up LGBTQ+ in a rural area can be a trying experience with the majority of people feeling alone and isolated. A space like this can help with that isolation since students who are LGBTQ+ will have a space where they can be themselves. That is the biggest thing that I think people misunderstand about being LGBTQ+. These are just people trying to be themselves, which we are always advising kids to do. However, there have always been apparent addendums to this; not if you are gay, lesbian, or trans, not if you do not dress or act like other people, etcetera. Parents and educators; need to make up their minds. Either we support kids being different or we should just say that all kids must be the same.
By Sandra Reid Correspondent Wo w D e c e m b e r is just about over. It is amazing that the months are going by so fast. Pretty soon instead of people complaining about the winter weather, some will be complaining about the summer weather. The winner of a great raffle from St. Patrick’s CWL, in Young was Justin Foley from Lanigan. Congratulations that was an awesome win. There were only five ladies out for sewing on Dec. 7, but they were five very busy ladies. Sewing, conversing and enjoying a great cup of tea and delicious goodies. There were 16 people that attended the Viscount Seniors Breakfast on Dec. 10. Ervin Credguer was the Lucky Loonie Pot winner. Chris Rault and Monica Palfy did the cooking and cleaning. Viscount Central School held a Christmas Door Competition. 1st place was the Grade 7/8 Homeroom. 2nd place was the Grade 3/4 Homeroom. Best wishes to anyone that is under the weather, hope you feel better soon. Have a great week!

Marysburg hosts annual Christmas concert By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
The church was filled with singers who care, in hopes of spreading the Christmas cheer. The cheer was spread from three local choirs, who teamed up to perform during the 19th Annual Marysburg Christmas Concert at the Marysburg Assumption Church on Dec. 11. The concert featured approximately 65 performers from the Marysburg Regional Choir, Community Children’s Choir and the Handbell Choir as they performed an array of Christmas songs, both well known and less known. Involving such a wide array of performers, including some young and old is an important aspect of the show, says Choir Director Sharon Carter. “We involve a lot of different age groups on purpose so that we can keep the tradition going… the idea is to be as inclusive as possible with as many
people as possible.” The show featured two sets of music including songs such as, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear and the First Noel and ended with the choir’s favourite song Glory! Glory! Just prior to the conclusion of the show the choir performed Silent Night, with the whole audience lighting candles, which, has been a tradition since before the concert began, says Carter. “It’s part of the traditions they like to keep and of course the children love the fact that they’ve got the candles.” Carter says the choice of music for the concert is made to provide a wide variety as well as different styles and makes the choices based on what the choir and children’s choir are able to sing. “Everything has to be thought out in terms of can we accomplish that and do it successfully.” Some of the music is carried over from year to year, says Carter but for
the most part each year the music is different from year-to-year. “There are some that you do each year like Silent Night but you may change the style of it so it’ll feel completely different… because I know the audience likes to hear the familiar pieces too.” Carter says one of her goals when choosing the music this year was to showcase some of the talent within the choir, so she incorporated a number of solos and group solos into the show, as well, she picked music incorporated the flute because they were lucky enough to have a fabulous flute player this year as well. Carter says she starts planning for the show in the middle of the summer so they can have all the music ordered and organized and bring the Choir together seven weeks prior to the show to begin rehearsing. In total the regional choir gets to-
gether to rehearse ten times for the show, while the kids choir rehearses five times and the handbell choir four times. In total Carter estimates there were between 250 and 300 people who took in the show, noting that it was a little down from previous years, which could be attributed to the cold weather but says it was still very heart warming to see so many in attendance. “It’s kind of become a traditional way to celebrate the Christmas season.” Overall Carter was really pleased with how the show went, noting that everyone sang their hearts out and says the planning for next year’s show will beginning in the not too distant future. “We’re hoping at some point to have the Saskatoon Symphony here doing their messiah that they do every year in Saskatoon. We’re hoping that at some point they’ll be traveling out here to Marysburg. We are talking to them about that.”
New initiative sees bus stuffed for Wadena Food Bank By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
The Wadena Kinettes are trying something new this Christmas. Lisa McMartin with the Wadena Kinettes says they usually hand out Christmas hampers for a Secret Santa campaign to about 27 families within the Wadena area. This year they decided to try and help more people by stuffing a small school bus with donations for the Wadena Food Bank. By the time the doors closed and the bus pulled away, the Kinettes had collected 2400 lbs of food. Many people got on board with the event with Wadena Co-op giving a discount on items purchased, including turkeys for each family. The turkeys were not included in the final weight count. They also received $500 from GX94 from their cookbook sales to go towards purchases for Stuff the Bus. Michelle Van Den Bossche with the Wadena Food Bank says that being a fairly new organization they have received a lot of support, not just from the Wadena community but also Quill Lake and Foam Lake as well. “People are very generous and kind and it’s kind of humbling.” McMartin thinks this will be an event that will happen again next year.
It was a joint effort on Dec. 11 to Stuff the Bus for the Wadena Food Bank, with Wadena KinClub, Wadena Food Bank and little elves helpers coming from Help for Humanity at Wadena Composite School, says Lisa McMartin. Altogether over 2,400 pounds of food was collected. Avengers and Crusaders aim to defend district titles By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
With fall sports now finished, the winter sports schedule is getting underway with basketball next up on the docket. In junior basketball, the Middle Lake Avengers and St. Brieux Crusaders were the cream of the crop and are looking to defend their 2016 district titles. Jr. Girls The district championship in the junior girls competition went to the Middle Lake Avengers, as they improved upon their finishes in 2014 and 2015 that saw them lose in the district semi-finals. The Avengers feature of team of 14 players with 12 returning from last year’s district championship winning team, which gives the Avengers a head start on some of the other teams, says Head Coach Lisa Parsons. “They have that background knowledge from last year… as far as the plays go. Just a refresher is what we’re doing and then expanding on those plays as well as improving in their individual skills, which is very important.” With some many players on the team Parsons says it will be an advantage. They will be more rested than some of the other teams, noting that her team is already in very good shape. “We do a lot of conditioning as well as skills during practice.” With the season just getting underway Parsons says athleticism is going
to be a big part of the success of the team this season. “We have a little more height this year so that’s nice to see and speed and even those that don’t have the height they’re very good guards, they’re fast.” Despite being tall and being athletic, Parsons says the Avengers are going to have to work on their offense and their shooting throughout the year if they want to improve. “Especially incorporating the new players as well because you need all of them out there at one time or another, they all play.” Looking ahead, Parsons says she hopes to see her team be very competitive this season. “Time will tell. You never know with injuries.” Jr. Boys The St. Brieux Crusaders continued their dominance of the junior boys district championship last season as they captured their fifth in a row and marked the sixth straight season that they made the final. This year’s Crusaders team featured 12 players, with eight of them returning from last years squad. Crusaders Head Coach Gary Pachkowski notes that the team comes with a lot of experience having won district championships but notes that he also has a member of the team who played for Team Prairie Central at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan and another who currently competes on the Basketball Saskatchewan pro-
vincial team. Both provide additional experience from those teams as well. The Crusaders come into the season with a high level of skill and basketball sense, says Pachkowski, who notes that he feels his team has an advantage because they play basketball all summer on outside courts. “That makes it that much easier because you get a lot of coaches in junior trying to run an offense when kids can’t pass or catch and you’ve got to learn to pass or catch first. Then you’ve got to learn how to cut, then you’ve got to learn how to do a lay up, then you can maybe implement an offense.” While the Crusaders are well set up
going into the season Pachkowski acknowledges that they still have work to do to improve including moving their feet and boxing out on defense. “Learning to play defense always seems to be the last thing. Kids always want to shoot and score but you’ve got to play defense.” Looking ahead to the season Pachkowski says he expects his team should be competitive again and says they have a great opportunity to defend their district championship. The junior season is now underway as teams have their sights set on peaking in time for the pre-district and district championships in March.

A collection of 2016’s best quotes, notes and anecdotes from January through June: • Brad Dickson of the Omaha WorldHerald: “Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long gave Bears’ tickets to the trash collector who found his wallet. The trash collector said: ‘Uh, got any Panthers’ tickets?’ ” • Headline at fark.com: “NFL can’t remember promising to fund concussion research.” • Comedy writer Bill Williams: “Jeff Gordon, NASCAR driver has retired from racing. His first week at home wasn’t so smooth. He goes through life with his head protected by a large, orange bale of hay.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “Former Pittsburgh Steeler receiver, Antwaan Randle-El said he wishes he never played football because he is experiencing memory loss. When asked what he would have done instead, Randle-El said; ‘Instead of what?’”

The future of robots and farming
Calvin Daniels It has long been my expectation that farming would become a sector where robotic machinery would become a major element of operations. Talk to producers and one of the major issues
they face is finding reliable staff. Operating field machinery worth hundreds of thousands of dollars require employees to be well-trained, and that training means good wages are required. The problem for farmers is that the staff needs are focused from spring seeding through fall harvest. Good employees want full-time careers, and that doesn’t fit the reality of farms particularly well. But years ago I listened to a speaker who foresaw robotic machinery on the
common farm. We have seen that trend starting of course. Combines are now able to roll down a swath guided by global positioning technology, the operator a gauge watcher. The grain cart rolls up to take the grain, and operation is taken over by the combine in what is pretty clearly a robotic link. When it comes to spraying variable rate application across a field it is achieved by computer control. It only makes sense that tractors will evolve to be
fully robotic. Detailed field mapping and GPS certainly provides the grid for a robot tractor to follow, so a unit without a driver is nearly an expected step. Even concerns over system troubles not being caught without an operator has faded as many new units have monitors which auto-shutdown units when mechanical issues arise. So the eve of robotic tractors is upon us. This summer Case IH showed off a 400-horespower robotic magnum tractor.

Sister company New Holland did the same. The two machines are a first in the sense of major lines ready to offer a big horsepower robotic tractor to the general producer. The benefits are obvious, starting with not needing an operator. With no operator needed, the potential to run a unit, at least for processes such as cultivation and seeding, 24-hours a day. Every producer will see that as a major opportunity to carry out operations over large acres in the time sensitive seasons of farming.
What will come next? The likelihood of a fully autonomous combine seems likely. It may be harder to convince producers based on the variables of harvest, but distance monitoring of gauges for multiple units by a single-desk operator will be the future. Just as drivers are awaiting the arrival of fully autonomous cars taking us to work and the movies, farmers are on the cusp of robots ruling the fields. It is a future I have expected which draws ever nearer.

Have yourself a green Christmas By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
Christmas can be a joyful time of year. But it can also be a wasteful one. However, whether it is recycling wrapping paper, running energy efficient LED Christmas lights on a timer, or making sure those Christmas leftovers find a good home, there are many things that everyone can do to make their Christmas a little greener. “For as fun as it is and as nice as it is to get everyone together, Christmas is a really wasteful time of year,” says Matt Wolsfeld with the Office of Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan. Energy waste is also part of Christmas that can contribute to climate change and one person’s environmental footprint, the impact one person makes in terms of energy used. Everything that is made for Christmas from wrapping paper to Christmas lights to the Christmas ham takes energy to make. All that waste also has to go somewhere, like the landfill and someone has to pay for that waste to be transported there. “There’s a lot of things wastefulness at Christmas time can contribute to. It’s good just to be aware of those things.” Going green at Christmas does not mean getting rid of all your Christmas traditions. There are always easy ways to cut back on waste that will not take away from the Christmas season. Christmas Dinner: The first easy tip that Wolsfeld gives for cutting back on Christmas dinner waste is just keeping in mind portions. How many people are coming for supper? What does that mean for the amount of food you will be cooking? Where are your leftovers going to go? This may not mean perfect measures of food, but it can help, says Wolsfeld. Buying ingredients in bulk will reduce packaging since pre-packaged food has a lot more packaging involved and can have portions that are either too big or too small. Buying in bulk, you control how big your portions are.
Wolsfeld also recommends looking for local sources of food since this will cut back on food miles, how many miles your food had to travel to make it to your plate. Check with local farmers and butchers to get food that was grown in your own backyard. Christmas leftovers are always a treat come Boxing Day so make sure Christmas leftovers always go to a good home. For those unopened cans of cranberry sauce or cream corn or a leftover cucumber that did not wind up in that salad, the local Food Bank is always an option there. Decorating: Again, Wolsfeld’s first tip is pretty simple; take a look at what you need and what you do not need for your decorations. Take a look at the space you are decorating, too. “In reality, you can set your own standards,” says Wolsfeld. “I would always suggest less is more when it comes to decorating.” Especially since you are paying for decorations not just with money but also with time and energy, it could be time to rethink decorating that second guest room or the den that you hardly go into. In the end, it could save you time, money, storage space, and the waste you create from throwing out those decorations when you get sick of them. Finding durable, reusable decorations or even decorations that can be used all year round and spruced up at Christmas time can also be a good time and money saver, says Wolsfeld. The internet is a wealth of information for turning recyclable materials into decorations, which can also be a fun Christmas activities for kids. Christmas lights are a vital part of decorating. Imagine staring at your tree on a peaceful winter night without any lights on it. Wolsfeld suggests LED lights as a more energy efficient option since they last longer than traditional strings. Also, just go ahead and try to find that one burnt out bulb in the string
instead of throwing it away. There are ways of making that easier with string and bulb testers available around Christmas time. Putting outdoor lights on a timer can also save your money and energy. Who is going to see your lights at 3 am anyway? Just like giving to the food bank, donating still usable decorations to a second hand store can bring real benefit back into the community. Presents First off, shiny wrapping paper is not recyclable. Go for paper kinds that can be recycled. There are a lot of options as well that are reusable without being wrappings, like boxes and bags that can be reused more easily. Be smart in your gift giving too. Why give something if it is only going to be
thrown away or re-gifted? “Revaluate the idea of just giving gifts for the sake of it and rather gives something that is a useful gift rather something you know is destined for the landfill,” says Wolsfeld. Also there are always local options for specialty gift giving or even a gift that is more personal. As well as helping the local economy and small business, this will also help cut down on the miles your gift had to travel to get under the tree. For those gifts that are harder to get in town and a trip into Saskatoon is required, carpool to cut back on fuel use and emissions. When Santa is not the ideal delivery option, Wolsfeld suggest Canada Post since their trucks are already on the road with their normal routes so it will not take a special trip and more emissions to have a package delivered.

Christmas country in Watrous By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
No matter how many shows she has played or how many awards she has won, Eli Barsi is always surprised when she receives a standing ovation. Barsi was very happy with the one she received on Dec. 11 at the Watrous Community Centre from a crowd of about 210 people. “We could feel the energy. They were excited to be there and we were delighted to perform for them.” It was a Christmas concert but the Kennedy, Sask. native threw in some of her new music, including her new
single, Screamin’ Jimmy about her new tour bus. The Christmas music she did play was always along the vein of cowboy country. Barsi is always touring and will be playing a handful of shows before taking a break for Christmas. In 2017 she will be kicking off a European Tour and heading to Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. And Barsi will be sharing Saskatchewan with them since her new album, Portrait of a Cowgirl, is a dedication to Saskatchewan. “I wrote all 12 tracks and they’re all
very rural sensibility, western lifestyle, traditionally minded lyrics and true stories.” The album has also won her the prestigious Wrangler Award ‘Best Composition‘, the second Canadian to do so. The stories are either from Barsi’s own experiences or stories she has heard from friends but they are stories that a lot of people can related to. Barsi says she has people telling them how much they appreciate the lyrics because it gives the audience that piece of Saskatchewan. “That’s always an honour to hear that people listen and pick up on that.”
This is the reason Barsi is very careful on any covers that she may play since she has to relate to it. They always pick covers that represent their message. Whether in small town Arkansas or small town Saskatchewan, Barsi loves meeting new people, especially in those like-minded, community orientated, everyone knows everyone kind of places. “We really get to know the same people and they all seem to be very similar.” Earl Amendt Jr. says the event grossed $5,000-$6,000 for the Watrous United Church.

St. Brieux and Birch Hills hope to move up step By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
With fall sports now finished, the winter sports schedule is getting underway with basketball next up on the docket. Sr. Boys basketball in the area followed the same script in 2016 as it did in 2015, with only the St. Brieux Crusaders and Birch Hills Marauders qualifying. St. Brieux Crusaders The Crusaders claimed the 2A provincial silver medal, their fourth consecutive Hoopla medal. Five members of last year’s silver medal winning squad return looking to improve upon that this season as they will be joined by seven new members.

With so few players returning this season Crusaders Head Coach Jonathon Busse notes that they are still blesses with a lot of depth, as each of the seven grade 10s come in with a great deal of skill as well. “We’re not going to be focused on just having a couple of players to carry the team we’ll have a lot of players who can contribute.” The team also comes together with a great deal of familiarity, says Busse as all of the players have played together in the past. “Even though they’re grade 10 they are very comfortable with the grade 12s on the team and grade 11s so it’s been a real easy transition for them this year.” The Crusaders come into the season with a smaller team, but one that has great ball handling skills and speed, says Busse, who notes they are a very strong attacking team. In terms of areas of improvement Busse says the focus is going to be on having a well-rounded game. “Being able to attack as a team and more cutting without the ball and having a team approach offense.” Looking ahead to the start of the season Busse says his number one focus is on growing the team but says their goal is still provincials. “It’s more of a develop the team play and create a stronger offense by working together… I would still hope we make provincials and after that as long as we’re competitive every game that’s all that matters to me.” Birch Hills Marauders The Marauders claimed the 3A silver medal after fourth place finishes in 2015 and 2014. The Marauders feature a team of 12 players this
season, with seven returning from last year’s squad. The Marauders are set up to have a good season says Head Coach Darrin Rask as most of the players returning this season played major minutes a year ago. “That experience from last year is going to help for this year.” Having so many players back from a year ago is helpful, says Rask as it cuts down on the amount of time needed to teach the plays because they are already familiar with the ones used last season. The Marauders strengths as the season gets underway will be their speed and shooting ability, says Rask who notes the players love to push the pace of play. “It’ll come down to the hard work and these guys really love the game and they have a lot of fun together.” While their offense is a strength, Rask says being tougher to play against defensively will be a big focus for the team as the year moves along. “Not letting people get to the basket and just being able to stop their man one-on-one,” will be beneficial skills to grow on, says Rask. Looking ahead, Rask says the team have lofty goals for this season and are aiming to win the provincial gold medal. “We’ve got three starters back from last year and the other four guys played quite a bit last year too so there’s a couple of guys who are ready to step in. We are hoping to get to that top spot this year if we can.” The Sr. Boys season is now underway and they will be working hard to make improvements in the proper areas to get set for the playoffs, which start with the conference championships March 10-11.

The Jansen and District Kinette club put on their annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 8 with songs, poetry, piano, and dancing all done by local performers. The night also included a funny skit about a day in the life of a local Jansen business, the Jansen Service. The highlight of the night was a visit from Santa which finished off the evening, says Jennelle Schindel. This year the event raised funds for the local food
bank with $594 raised at the door. The Village of Jansen also took this opportunity to award this years Volunteer of the Year award. Karen Renz received that honour for 2016. Renz is involved with the Zion Lutheran Church and took part in all the church activities, as well as Ladies’ Quilting Group, Jansen Community Bloomers, the local Ladies Catering Club, and the Jansen Community Club’s Executive. “When the new plans were made for the building,
they were built around the kitchen and the needs of the community club, says Joni Mack with the Village of Jansen. “Karen was the lead here too and did extensive research, travelling to other facilities as well as gathering local knowledge to design one of the most functional kitchens for many miles around. Organization is one of Renz’s key attributes, says Mack. “She leads by example and will never ask anything of anyone that she is unwilling to do herself.
‘Honouring our loved ones here and gone’ at art show By Emma Meldrum Tisdale Recorder and Parkland Review Reporter
Yellow Quill First Nation turned its grief into art at a show that may be the first of many. The organizer, Charlene Peequaquat, noticed something going on with local artists when she came back to Yellow Quill. “I’ve just moved back to my community and I realized that there’s a lot of grief, you know, she says. “It was in my heart to try and find a way to assist some of our people who have this natural talent to draw and maybe focus on making something happen with it. “I see a lot of pain behind what it is that they’re going through and I know that a lot of them turn to drawing as a way to cope. Peequaquat says that while the community might come away with some healing after the Dec. 8 art show, the event was primarily for the artists
themselves. “I’m doing a lot of it for the artists themselves, not so much the community, but the artists, so I wanted them to be able to gather a bit of hope and happiness and a feeling of something different for themselves, something new and exciting. They’ve been doing it for so many years, but to be acknowledged, their daily life and how they get through what it is they get through. She hopes to see the event grow in coming years. Several area artists were away the day of the show, and she plans to book them in for next year. “I have a feeling it’s going to get bigger and bigger every year. I look forward to taking on this year and hopefully I’ll be back next year to continue it. The art on display was a mix of work with pen, pencil and paint. About a dozen artists contributed to the event.

Tough times ahead in Saskatchewan By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor
There were a lot of ups and downs but Nov. 30 was the last sitting session of 2016 at the Saskatchewan Legislature. This was the first session of the newly re-elected Brad Wall Saskatchewan Party, which includes Humboldt-Watrous MLA Donna Harpauer. Harpauer has been there for the downs, including losing a fellow Saskatchewan Party MLA Roger Parent, low points for oil, potash, and uranium are causing ripple effects across Saskatchewan, and a $1 billion revenue drop, and the ups, Saskatchewan’s continued growth in population and a continued triple A credit rating. “It does make for difficult times and it does make for difficult decisions going ahead,” says Harpauer. Saskatchewan also has one of the lowest debt to GDP ratios of all the provinces, next to Alberta, says Harpauer. This is a sign that Saskatchewan people in Saskatchewan industries are still working diligently to keep the province strong. “We’ll get through this,” says Harpauer. Two major discussions, especially in the last couple
of months have been the federal government’s carbon tax and the future of Saskatchewan crown corporations. It is about looking at efficiencies within the corporations and ensuring good quality service. SaskPower is under a lot of stress because of the need to replace old infrastructure while building the new infrastructure that is involved in Saskatchewan’s growth. There are past initiatives that are providing some savings within SaskPower, including coordinating with SaskPower and SaskEnergy on digging expenses. The appropriate ministries will be looking into more saving initiatives in the coming year, says Harpauer. With the conclusion of the election also came a new portfolio for Harpauer who became the Minister of Government Relations and Minister responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs. This past year has seen a lot of challenges for those portfolios including high rates of suicide within northern communities. Harpauer says she has been making trips up north as well as speaking with band leaders, including Tammy Cook-Searson, to see what can be done
together or by the government to work to address the issues. “The north is where a lot of revenue is generated and some great initiatives are being taken by individual communities.” The province, cities, and municipalities have always tried to work together. Now that Harpauer is the Minister for Government Relations, she is learning about those relationships in more detail, she says. “There is so much that we can do together if all levels of government work together.” As Minister, Harpauer is responsible for the Municipalities Act, Cities Act, and the infrastructure programs to work with communities on improving and spending infrastructure funds. Looking into 2017, Harpauer says the Saskatchewan government is committed to balancing the books but this will not be an easy task. “Even if there is a turn around fairly soon, and we are already seeing some in the oil and gas sector but we also need uranium and potash, it’s going to take some time before the provincial coppers see the benefit of it.” Despite the negatives, Harpauer says there are still many positives to look forward to in 2017.

Lake Lenore man pulls pair from slough By Emma Meldrum Tisdale Recorder and Parkland Review Reporter
A Lake Lenore man was a little shaken after pulling a couple from a slough Nov. 29. Darcey Weber was at the corner by the Pioneer Dixon elevator when he watched a white Intrepid get cut off by a truck. The car swerved, lost control and hit the ice. “I put my truck kind of in the middle of the road so no traffic went
by and they were pounding on the window trying to get out. The car was quite a ways down already. It was halfway up the front window,” says Weber. I tried kicking the window in. I couldn’t kick it in so I picked up a rock…and smashed out the window.” He pulled out the brother and sister, after which water came in the back window. “I was standing on the ice, I guess it was only a couple of inches thick - I
didn’t stop and check.” Another man called 911 while Bruce Puetz warmed up the shaken pair. “She was a little wet but the young boy was fairly dry yet,” says Weber. “They were still panicking pretty hard. I think if they would have rustled around in there much more, the back of that car might have went down too.” Weber thinks the slough might have been about ten feet deep. “Mainly, I [was] just praying this
car isn’t going to go under the water because if it goes under the water, now what. I just wanted to get them out now before something happened.” The car has now been pulled from the slough. Weber hasn’t spoken to the pair since pulling them out of the car. The North West “B: League saw a pair of games take place last week as St. Brieux knocked off Bellevue 22-13 and Cudworth upended Humboldt Public 14-11. With the wins St. Brieux and Cudworth move to the top of the standings, while Bellevue and Humboldt move to the bottom. Looking ahead to this week St. Brieux travels to St. Augustine, St. Dominic travels to HPS

We need to provide more opportunity for kids to perform By Christopher Lee Journal Reporter
Schools should do more to showcase student talent. I had the pleasure of attending the St. Dominic Christmas Concert on Dec. 8. Each of the four Humboldt area schools have had or will have concerts and it is nice to see. I can never remember a time in elementary or high school when the whole school teamed up to put on a performance of any kind. Now maybe it was because I went to an elementary school that had 300 students and a high school that had 900 when I was in grade nine and 750 by the time I graduated five years later and it was too difficult to organize that many students or maybe it was because it was not very important that the schools do something of that nature. I can remember times when my class would
do something but we never had the whole school come together to put on a show. It is a shame too because family and friends miss out on an opportunity to see their kids and friends showcase their talent. The kids also miss out because they lose the opportunity to bond. Sure they can bond at recess but there is something to be said about the bonding experience kids gain when they achieve a common goal, like performing during a concert. I can remember times during school when we would perform a play. The bond and connection you make with your classmates during and after is powerful, now imagine combining that feeling that you get from performing with 30 students to the feeling you would get performing with 100 students. It is not just about the feeling that the students
get from doing it either. Performing allows students to showcase skills they may not otherwise be able to showcase. A lot of times sports are given a great focus in schools, which is understandable, they teach teamwork, discipline and time management among others, but let us not forget about the power of the arts. Public speaking and learning to overcome fear is an important skill to learn, especially at a young age and that is something that the arts can teach kids. It is time we start allowing kids to showcase different skills with concerts like the ones held at each of the schools. It is a great start and I commend them for it but we need to continue to keep pushing the envelope and giving kids more opportunities to do those things.

PICOUYE: Gerald Russell Larry Sept 2, 1944 - Dec 5, 2016 The death of Mr. Gerald Russell Larry Picouye of Bruno, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK, on Monday, December 5, 2016. He was 72 years of age. The only child of Steve and Annie (nee Bidulka) Picouye, Gerald was born on Saturday, September 2, 1944, at home on the family farm north of Carmel, SK. He grew up there and learned to care for, respect, and love animals of all kinds. As Gerald got a little older, he and his father raised pure bred Hereford cattle. By the mid 60’s, as a young man, Gerald decided it was time to leave the farm for a new career. In his quest for employment, Gerald found himself in Regina employed at Kramer Tractor as an equipment demonstrator. That position sent Gerald to the shores of the south Saskatchewan River, where the Gardiner Dam was to be built. In the small neighbouring town of Riverhurst, Gerald met a young lady named Marlene Gwen McClelland where they dated and married on February 3, 1967. Gerald and Gwen were proud new parents nine months later with the birth of their daughter Tammie on October 12, 1967. Gerald continued on with road construction, being promoted to foreman on many projects. Gwen joined in as a camp cook assistant, which got them sent to jobs like Mount Blackstrap, Meadow Lake, Grande Cache, AB, and back to Spiritwood, SK, where their second daughter Melanie was born on September 22, 1971. At this point in his career, Gerald, Gwen and their two daughters moved back to Carmel and in 1974 opened Picouye Service. It was a busy year, none the least with the birth of their third child, a son named Danny, on September 29, 1974. With both the business and family growing in size, the decision to move was made; a larger shop was rented in Humboldt for the business as well as the purchase of Steve Remenda’s farm east of Bruno. Even with a business in Humboldt, grain farming, and caring for livestock, Gerald always found time for his family. By the late 80’s, with the lack of snow, operating a snowmobile shop wasn’t feasible anymore, Gerald and Gwen decided to close Picouye Service for good in 1988. Gerald, the entrepreneur he was, with his knowledge of equipment and experience with animals as well as his knowledge of the livestock industry, decided to start Picouye Trucking, hauling pigs and cattle to market and pasture. He also did hail adjusting for ten years. Gerald continued to farm and increase his herd of cattle to 160 cows, and of course a dog or two and lots of cats. This past October, the decision to sell the remaining cows was a tearful event for Gerald. He really loved his cows. In his leisure time, Gerald enjoyed fishing trips, visits to Mexico, casino runs, and lengthy Kaiser games. On December 5th, Gerald made the biggest trade of his life - a life of pain and suffering or to be at peace with death. Gerald will be sadly missed by his wife of 49 years, Gwen (nee McClelland) Picouye (just 60 days short of their 50th wedding anniversary); three children, 10 grandchildren, and one greatgrandson, all of whom he loved very much: daughter Tammie Krentz, her husband Brian, and their children April (son Landon and special friend Dwayne), Ryan and Robyn (special friend Jamie); daughter Melanie Brockman, her husband Tim, and their children Shey Lynne, Jenna, Jo Lee, and Breanna; and son Danny, his wife Tracy, and their children Courtney, Teneale and Nikita (special friend Trent). He was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Annie (nee Bidulka) Picouye; in-laws: Tom McClelland and Verna (nee DeWynter) Lafreniere, stepfather-in-law, Romeo Lafreniere; brother-in-law, Wayne (Tiny) McClelland; and niece Sharron McClelland. A Funeral Service was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., officiated by Nestor Trach. A prayer was read by Ed Brockman, and the eulogy was delivered by Brian Krentz, Courtney Picouye, and Shey Lynne Brockman. A slide presentation was shown by the Picouye family. A second Funeral Service was held at the Bruno Community Hall, Bruno, on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Humboldt District Hospital Palliative Care Unit. SchulerLefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.

BUSINESS PEO PLE! We’d like to be able to explain to you all the advantages of a newspaper in a 30-second radio message... ...but if we tried it would be impossible to do.
(18... 17... 16...) In 30 seconds, how can we explain all the flexibility in sizes based on your needs, the impact of colour and reversals, placement, rebate coupons, inserts, banners... no really, in 30 seconds, itʼs impossible to deliver an adequate message.
(6... 5... 4...) Exactly... itʼs time to stop since the 30 seconds is already up! For advertising that gives you an intelligent way to deliver your message, and provides the right message to the consumer, consider your weekly newspapers.
