Bruno welcomes Denmark to home plate
Game recap By Morley Sowa Sports Contributor Game one was an intense game, but a solo home run by Danish batter, Alex Brewerton, was all Denmark needed to get by, winning 1-0. Merchants pitcher, Justin Dauvin, explains why his team fell in game one. “We were a little bit rusty coming into the first game being that we hadn’t played in a while, so it was good to get those first few innings out of the way, and get back on track.” Game two was up next, and fans witnessed a slugfest in the five inning game. Bruno took a 3-0 lead to start off the top of the first, but Denmark replied with one of their own in the bottom half of the first. The two teams scored several runs through innings two through four, knotting the game up at 6-6. The Merchants took over the fifth inning, exploding for nine huge runs, including four home runs and a grand slam, leading Denmark 15-6 going into the bottom half of five. Denmark put a sense of fright into the Merchants, racking up seven runs, but falling just short, with Bruno taking the second game by an unusual score of 15-13. “The top of five really got us going,” said Justin Dauvin. “Timely hitting cost us game one, but we were able to adjust, and our sluggers got us the win here in game two.” Denmark had played games in Regina and Saskatoon before coming to Bruno and really enjoyed the experience of playing in a small town. “It was a great experience playing here. We’ve played seven games in three days, so it’s a great prep for us before playing at Worlds,” said Denmark manager, Jens Terkelsen.

Despite being a rural, agricultural town off a major highway, Bruno got a visit from Denmark on June 24 in the form of two exhibition games between the Bruno Merchants fastball team and Team Denmark, which is competing in the ISF Men’s World Championship in Saskatoon until July 5. “With the countries coming to Saskatoon for the Worlds, they are usually here a week in advance to get acclimated. In the meantime, they like to play a few exhibition games,” said Merchants coach Ray Bender. This actually isn’t a first for the team: back in 1988, when the Worlds were held in Saskatoon, the Bruno Merchants played Team Denmark in an exhibition game. The current coach of the Denmark team was a player back then, and Bender thinks that’s why they wanted to play in Bruno. It cost the Merchants $1,500 to bring Team Denmark out to Bruno, and admission was charged for the exhibition games to offset some of those costs. The teams played two backto-back games. Both were fairly close: the first was 1-0 for Denmark, while the second was 1513 for Bruno. Bender said Bruno and Denmark were of the same caliber, but they may have a tough time playing Team Canada, since Team Canada is rated higher than Denmark. About 300 people came out to take in the game on the warm, sunny day. “It was nice to see the crowd
out there,” Bender said. The standout moment for Bender was in the second game, when the Merchants were behind 8-6 and ended up scoring nine runs in the last inning to get the win. Afterward, Danish and Canadians mingled and had supper and some drinks. Bender said most speak English pretty well. Team Denmark had played several games around the province prior to the Bruno game, and were very happy with their experiences. “They said they were getting treated pretty well,” Bender said. “They were very happy with the hospitality.”

People pig out at annual Hogfest By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
Twelve hogs went into feeding an estimated 750-800 people at Englefeld’s 44th annual Hogfest on June 26-28. The celebration is a fundraiser for Englefeld’s recreation board and will go toward any needed improvements in the arena and clubs in town, such as the dance club. Though the dinner was the centerpiece, attendees could also take in slo-pitch, basketball, a wiener roast, fireworks, kids’ activities, a penny auction, a dance, and a pancake breakfast. Attendance was a bit down, but the organizers were expecting that, as it shared the weekend with events in St. Gregor and LeRoy. “I expect that will affect us a little bit but I don’t think it will be anything ma-
jor,” said Charlie Biemans, president of the recreation board. It certainly didn’t look like it affected the event: the arena was packed full of people for the dinner, and the lineups were long. Biemans said the weekend overall went very well and that the weather was great. This year’s Hogfest stuck to a formula and didn’t do anything different from other years. However, next year is the 45th Hogfest, which is going to be held in conjunction with Englefeld’s 100th anniversary. Biemans said there will be a parade and trade show, among other events. “A lot of people come home for Hogfest. They treat it like Christmas,” Biemans said. “There are lots of people here I know, and lots of people I don’t … We have a pretty good draw here.”

Rally for Parkinson’s in St. Gregor successful again
photo by Robin Tarnowetzki Attendees could take in an auction, motorcycles, a cookoff, and more at the 5th annual Shake, Rattle, and Roll motorcycle rally in St. Gregor to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
The roars of motorcycles drifted across the small town of St. Gregor for the Shake, Rattle, and Roll Rally for Parkinson’s Disease on June 27. The fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease is in its fifth year and boasted a silent and live auctions, a putting competition, a show and shine, horseshoe tournament, chili cookoff, and pancake breakfast. “To date, we have donated over $88,000 to Parkinson’s research, said organizer Wanda Kiefer. The number does not include this year’s rally, which does not have the total amount tallied yet. The rally started when Kiefer ’s husband, John, was diagnosed with
Parkinson’s at age 41. Kiefer decided she wanted to do something to help and started looking for ideas. Since John and his brothers are avid motorcyclists, she and a friend came up with the idea of having a motorcycle rally. “It just kind of went from there, she said. The rally gets riders from all over Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia. This year, the Kiefers’ nephew rode his bike from Victoria to participate. She said one thing she noticed was that there are a lot of motorcyclists right in the region. Kiefer said the rally has “absolutely grown in its five years of existence. “That was our goal: to put St. Gregor on the map, and I have to say we pretty much did that, she said.

You can prevent sewage backups this summer By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer
It’s summer, which means there are going to be thunderstorms. To prevent sewage from backing up into your basement, SGI recommends that homeowners get a back water valve. “When you have a sewer backup in your home, you’re dealing with raw sewage seeping into every nook and corner of your basement, damaging or ruining everything it touches – your walls, your carpet, your
furniture, your electronics – the list goes on and on. It can be extremely labour intensive and costly to clean up that damage, said Don Thompson, VP of Product Management with SGI Canada, in a news release. “Homeowners may not realize they are vulnerable – but it’s actually a very common problem in our province, and one you can avoid if you take the proper steps like installing a sewer back water valve. The valve is installed on the main sewer line. If there’s a heavy rain and
the public sewer system becomes overwhelmed, the valve helps stop that by cutting off the main line so sewage doesn’t enter the house. Kelley Brinkworth, manager of media relations with SGI, said that it’s one of those things homeowners don’t think about until something catastrophic happens. The initial cost can be $1,500- $3,000. “It’s just to get people thinking about it so that it could be something they could do in advance of any kind of storm hitting, Brinkworth said,
and compared it to regular maintenance like repairing shingles. “That’s the cost of being a homeowner. You could think of it the same way; it’s a maintenance thing. The benefits outweigh that cost down the road. Since 2010, an average of 5,500 Saskatchewan homeowners insured by SGI have had problems with sewer backups. An average payout is $25,000 per claim. Brinkworth said any homeowner interested in getting it installed just has to call a plumber.
Even social change affects farming
Calvin Daniels It is increasingly obvious that much in our world moving forward will not be imposed by government regulation, but rather by the philosophies put forward by big business. An example of the power business holds came clearly into focus recently after so much attention was focused on the symbolism of the Confederate flag in the United States in the
wake of the massacre in Charleston, which left nine African-Americans dead in their church. The shooter, 21-yearold Dylann Roof, has confessed to the murders, and has been quoted as wanting to start a race war. A widely-circulated photo of the shooter holding a gun and a Confederate flag brought the debate of the flag’s racist toots to the forefront, becoming quickly a political football. Some politicians have called for the flag’s removal, at least from public buildings; others defending the flag just as adamantly. Meanwhile, big business has taken action on the issue. Walmart, Amazon, eBay and Sears all announced bans on the
sale of Confederate flag merchandise. “The announcements are the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding South, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, Gov. Nikki Haley announced in a Monday afternoon news conference, saying that she supports removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds, CNN reported. The business decision in this case is a powerful one of social awareness in regards to what the flag means for a large portion of their customers. Not all decisions are popular of course, even 15071SWW1
those which fall on the correct side of contentious debates. In January 2012, Starbucks joined Microsoft and Nike in announcing support of a Washington state bill to legalize same-sex marriage, which ultimately passed. There was a backlash from anti-gay groups against Starbucks, but the company has remained steadfast. “If you feel respectfully that you can get a higher return [than] the 38% you got last year, it’s a free country, said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, during the annual shareholders meeting on March 21. “You could sell your shares at Starbucks and buy shares in other companies, detailed www. money.cnn.com. So how does this relate to farming? Well as business flexes its muscles in terms of determining which direction the broader society will go, some
of their decisions will impact how we farm in the future. It’s already happening, actually. The Western Producer website (www.producer. com) recently published a story on a company pushing dairy producers in a particular direction. “Saputo, a Montreal based dairy processor, says it will refuse milk from farms that fail to treat cows humanely, began the story. “The new policy is expected to be implemented across Saputo’s operations in Canada, the United States, Australia and Argentina. “In a June 1 news release, the company announced it would not accept milk from farms that dock tails or that fail to administer pain control for dehorning and disbudding of calves. That may seem like a reasonable decision, although the farm practices they want adjusted have been long-standing
ones. While pain control may be reasonable, it does add costs to the farm - costs the company, nor are consumers likely to rush to cover through his payments for product. The concern for farmers is how far business may go in mandating farm practices. The possibilities can be both positive in terms of influence, and could just as easily be detrimental. Consider a large food chain not accepting any foods which were not certified to have not been sprayed with glyphosate in the wake of the recent report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization, that the product is a potential carcinogen. While farmers may have a limited voice with big business decisions, they should at least be poised to be part of debates which are sure to come.

Baseball madness in Muenster By Robin Wark Sports Writer Muenster was in a diamond daze this past weekend. Displaying the passion for the sport that earned it induction into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, Muenster was the site of a trio of baseball tournaments June 27-28. Local teams were successful with the hometown Muenster Peewee Red Sox winning. The Humboldt Dodgers triumphed at the Humboldt Bantam Tournament they hosted in Muenster. A Muenster Mosquito Tournament was also held. Garret Korte, one of the organizers of the baseball extravaganza, noted it was a “very successful tournament in all divisions. Peewee Red Sox Win In the “A final of the Muenster Peewee Tournament, the hometown Red Sox prevailed in an exciting 10-9 win over the Saskatoon Blue Jays. “We have had really close games with the Saskatoon Blue Jays all year, Muenster coach Joel Taphorn wrote in an email interview. “This was a game that could have gone either way.

The momentum changed often in the back-andforth affair. Muenster led 3-1 after the first inning, but Saskatoon pulled within one in the top of the third. The Red Sox answered in the bottom of the frame and held a 5-2 lead. The Blue Jays’ bats came alive, Taphorn said, and Saskatoon went up 9-5 in the top of the fifth inning. Muenster responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot things up at 9-9. In the extra inning, the Red Sox leadoff batter got on base and stole second. He was bunted to third and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly. “All tournament long it was a team effort, Taphorn said. “We had contributions from everyone in our lineup, and we played really well defensively.

Plunkett news By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent Correction: in last week’s paper it should read Earl (not Carl) and his son Boyd Langston of Leduc, Alta., went to Ontario to fish. Hope everyone had a good Father’s Day! A memorial service was held last Friday for Norma Pastor. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Michael Pastor and his family from Plunkett folks. In town here we received a nice light rain recently. Sympathy goes out to the family of Dorothy Dmith of Watrous on her recent passing. Dennis and Leona Credgeur had their three grandchildren here last weekend. The penpal great-grandmas are attending a tea on June 24 at Viscount School. Wendy Bishop and a group of ladies that she works with went on a canoeing trip in the northern lakes for a few days. Here I’m enclosing a weed killer spray:
r
orne C e e Coff
2 litres apple cider vinegar or white vinegar 1/4 cup table salt 1/2 tsp. Dawn dish soap (liquid) Mix together and pour into a spray bottle and mix thoroughly. Spray on middle part includng a flower part on dandeions and on leaves of trailing weeds. Avoid itting any perennials or ornamental plants or trees. This recipe was printed in Grain News. The gradens are growing now and coming along great. Several folks enjoyed the circus that was held in Saskatoon last week. Folks send 50th congratulations wedding wishes for Luther and Florence Gray, who are celebrating it on June 27 in Saskatoon. Plunkett folks welcome any new folks that are moving here into our town. Sharon Dunbar went to Linden, Alta., for a while to spend Father’s Day with her dad and her mom. Anyone having any news, please phone me at (306) 944-4852.
