Finding yourself in 4,200 kilometres or less By Becky Zimmer Journal Editor

It has been 10 years since I graduated high school in Annaheim. It has been eight years since I worked at the Reid-Thompson Public Library and Prairie Perk Coffeehouse. But now, I am finally back in Humboldt. Just coming out of the journalism program at King’s College in Halifax, I am excited to become your new editor. It is exciting to be back home working at the same paper I read growing up. You see the paper from a new angle after getting a position like this. As a kid, I always enjoyed behind-the-scene views. I volunteered all my life, from Annaheim church masses, bazaars and sports days, to a dance compe-

tition and book readings in Humboldt to different groups in Saskatoon and Halifax. Watching and learning how everything is done has always awed me. Now I am as behind the scenes as I can get. Driving into town from my mom’s house in Drake, I thought about all that I’ve done in Humboldt. This is the town where I learned how to drive. I played sports in every gym and ball diamond in the area. Many family and friends have gotten married in St. Augustus Church. I’ve danced the night away at the sportsplex out in Muenster. This is the area that I grew up. However, I found myself while I traveled across the country. Growing up in the area had its challenges, especially being the youngest child in a family of five. I was always someone’s granddaughter, daughter, sister, niece or cousin. I do not think anyone knew

my actual name until I was 13. Even in Saskatoon, you do meet more people who would not know you from a hole in the ground but you also see the same people who introduce you someone’s sister. Leaving for the other side of the country, you were relieved of this burden. You were just you in a place where every face is unrecognizable. You no longer ride the bus everyday running into someone from class or work. It was refreshing to have a blank slate with everyone you meet. No one knew about the rock collection you had at five or the time you fell off the referee stand reffing junior boys volleyball. You were just who you were at that moment. Even growing up in such a close-knit small town, I got bit by the travel bug at an early age. As of right now, I’ve seen every province in Canada and lived in five of them. I found a little part of myself in every one of those provinces but I will always think fondly of home and it will always be some place special to me. I could not have gotten any more home than this and I am very happy for that.

Viscount news By Sandra Reid Correspondent

Candi Baron, her daughter Christina and friend Kamden from Chestermere, Alta., spent the August long weekend at the home of Barry and Penny Smith of Viscount. A Sunday drive to Manitou was enjoyed by all. Penny Smith spent the week of Aug. 10-14 in Saskatoon caring for her granddaughters while school is out. Best wishes to anyone that is under the weather. Hope you feel better soon. If you have any news to share please let me know. Thank you. Have a great week!

Carvers show off their chops at Manitou Beach

photos by Robin Tarnowetzki By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer

People visiting Manitou Beach from Aug. 13-16 got to see something different with accomplished chainsaw carvers showing off their skills in the Manitou Maple Madness Chainsaw Carving Competition. “People are awestruck, said Manitou Beach mayor Eric Upshall. “I think what they’re really taken by is the detail that is applied to some of these carvings. The event came to life when Upshall and others were looking for something to draw tourists to Manitou Beach. Eventually an amateur carver in the village brought up the idea of having the chainsaw carving competition, and the idea was born. From there, organizers worked at bringing in the wood and tracking down accomplished carvers. “The event took shape and we’re very proud to say we have some of the best carvers in the world (at the event), Upshall said. The carvings turned into a variety of things, from wolves to birds to a Buddha-like figure. The carvers were enclosed within a fence while onlookers could observe and chat when the artists took a break. The statues will be placed around the village, while the results of a quick cut competition were auctioned off with half the proceeds going to Camp Easter Seal and half going to the carvers themselves. Next year the village is planning a sculpture symposium. The plan is to have the chainsaw competition be a biannual event with the sculpture symposium interspersed in other years. “We should have a lot of art on the street for people to enjoy, Upshall said. The event also featured professional axe woman Kat Spencer doing a series of demonstrations. She showed off her wood chopping skills and did some axe throwing for onlookers. Spencer has made wood chopping her life. When she’s not in competitions, she runs an indoor axe throwing business, travels with an all female entertainment group called the Axe Women, she has a private entertainment company, and she teaches log rolling classes to children.

“I think timber sports or wood chopping is a heritage sport, she said. “It re-enacts all the jobs that people would have had to do in the woods, before there was mechanized equipment like machinery or chainsaws. Wood chopping is on a comeback right now. People are starting to get back to the basics of fun, which means indoor axe throwing is a really popular sport; that’s the gateway event. They start axe throwing, and then they want to play with other sharp things. So then they want to try chopping, then they want to try log rolling, then they want to try sawing events. Spencer got into the sport when she saw it was offered as a club sport at her university in New Brunswick. From there, she fell in love with it. “I love the feeling. It’s a great workout, she said.

S ANSWER E FROM TH PUZZLES IN LAST WEEKS EAST CENTRAL TRADER

She said that wood choppers sometimes do up to a dozen different events in a single competition, but her favourite is axe throwing. “It’s actually the hardest event to get good at, she said. “It’s so hard to get good and consistent at axe throwing that it makes it really addictive. Spencer doesn’t look like a lumberjack, but that doesn’t stop her from being successful. “It’s a heavily male dominated sport, she said. “I think by being a smaller woman I really have to focus on technique because I don’t have the brute strength. And from the sounds of it, it’s an easier sport to learn than you’d think. “I think you need to have respect for the sharp equipment and a willingness to do it, she said.

Community pulls together for post office By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer

When the St. Gregor post office was in danger of shutting down, the community came together. After getting the money together, built the new post office in a weekend. The post office was finished in June but the grand opening was held on Aug. 12. “(The reaction is) very positive,” said Brad Michel, the chair of the planning committee. “Everybody wanted to see the post office stay for obvious reasons. We get lots of compliments on the workmanship that was done. Very good response.” The bar – and with it the post office – shut down in May, and that’s when the community came together. “We had to do something, otherwise we would have lost of the post office, so the community came together and decided that we would build the post office in the seniors hall,” Michel said. “It was all done by volunteers.” The community didn’t do any fundraising for the project. Instead, money was raised through donations and some local businesses donated materials as well. “If we lose the post office, there’s not much left,” Michel said. “(The project was) just to keep the community going. It’s a gathering place for people to meet. It’s good to see everybody get together.” If the post office was shut down in St. Gregor, the town could set up mailboxes but would have to go to Muenster or Humboldt for stamps and other things for mail. In addition, the Saskatchewan Transit bus stopped at the post office. If that was no longer an option, St. Gregor residents would have to drive to Humboldt. The seniors’ hall was chosen since the town pays utilities on it already. Two walls and a door were put up and mailboxes and parcel boxes put in. Michel estimates that there were 30 volunteers throughout the whole process. “It’s really awesome to see how the community came together and made it happen,” he said. “I definitely would like to thank everybody in the community for making it happen.”

photo by Robin Tarnowetzki The community of St. Gregor pulled together to keep their post office in town with individuals and businesses donating funds and volunteers setting up a new post office in a weekend. They celebrated the post office’s grand opening on Aug. 12 with a barbecue.

The CGC is the federal agency responsible for establishing and maintaining Canada’s grain quality standards. Its programs result in shipments of grain that consistently meet contract specifications for quality, safety and quantity. The Commission regulates the grain industry to protect producers’ rights and ensure the integrity of grain transactions. While there are some worries the Commission’s powers are being eroded, they have determined some significant changes are currently warranted. After consulting with domestic and international stakeholders and conducting a thorough evaluation, the CGC will designate 29 varieties of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) and Canada Prairie Spring Red

under contract these days. Wheat however is very much a bulk commodity. Loads from a variety of farmers end up as part of the same shipment so there is a need for some rather specific regulations, and they need to come from an over-arching authority, because major grain handlers are again in the business of bulk commodity sales when it comes

(CPSR) wheat to another class as of Aug. 1, 2017, detailed a recent release. “In an evaluation of varieties against the revised quality parameters for the CWRS and CPSR classes, the Canadian Grain Commission determined these varieties do not meet the quality characteristics of their current designated class (CWRS, CPSR). “In addition, in 2016 the Canadian Grain Commission will initiate a review, for a period of up to two-years, of CWRS and CPSR varieties for which more quality data is needed before a decision about their class designation can be made.” Given the aforementioned concerns which have arisen from some market sectors, changes were clearly needed. In a competitive market, like that for wheat, you can ill-afford to let any advantage you might have deteriorate. Hopefully the moves by the CGC will h e l p re a s s u re c u s t o m ers that Canada can still deliver quality wheat as it long has.

Be cautious around commercial vehicles By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer

This month’s SGI traffic spotlight takes a step away from the regular driver and focuses on safety around commercial vehicles. “We want commercial drivers to ensure that they are following the rules and all the requirements as a driver and that their vehicle is meeting those safety standards,” said Marie Schultz, communications consultant with SGI. This month’s traffic spotlight is a team effort between SGI and the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA). SGI is asking commercial drivers to remember the following via news release: • Complete proper pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure your vehicle is in good operating condition. • Ensure your vehicle is within the allowed height

and weight limits to prevent damaging roads, bridges and other infrastructure. • Signal well in advance when planning to turn or change lanes, especially turning right as you may have to swing wide into a second lane. • Hang up, buckle up and be alert to the actions of oncoming drivers and other drivers at intersections. • Pull over when feeling tired – it could truly be a matter of life or death. • If you’ve been driving for many years, review the Professional Driver’s Handbook to keep up with new laws and to refresh your memory on the responsibilities of a professional driver. The most common accidents involving commercial vehicles are rear-end crashes, right- and left-turn crashes, and sideswipe crashes. SGI and STA recommend that other drivers remember that large trucks take longer to start and stop, they take wide turns, and

have bigger blind spots. To compensate, other drivers must remember to increase follow distance, be aware of when they’re turning, avoid areas directly in front of, behind, or beside them, and above all, be patient. “The other drivers don’t really understand how much room they need to be safe,” Schultz said. “They need to respect these larger vehicles.” In 78 per cent of fatal crashes involving a large truck, the actions of the other driver were a major contributing factor in the collision, so remembering how to act around large trucks is important for others to know. “It’s not only important for commercial drivers to take precautions,” said Al Rosseker, Executive Director of STA in a news release. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility - other drivers also need to know the safety implications associated with larger vehicles, and how to share the road safely with them.”

History comes to life in Watson By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer Watson held its annual Night at the Museum event on Aug. 13 with popcorn, old-style candy, and live actors to get more people out to the museum. “A lot of people like it... because they don’t see it [the muesum all the time] and a lot of younger ones don’t understand a lot of things, so they get to come in with their parents or I will help them and explain things to them,” said Emma McNulty, curator of the Watson Museum. People dressed up as historical characters and interacted with the public, weaving stories for kids who were paying rapt attention. “There are a lot of stories from lots of people who were significant to the town, so we just kind of bring those back to life,” McNulty said. She said summers are usually slow for the museum so the event is a good way to boost numbers, especially since the museum needs a certain number of attendees to remain open. “A lot of people from the community or who have moved away like to come back to reminisce and see what’s here,” she said. Night at the Museum started last year, and McNulty hopes it becomes an annual event. “I think that’s an important factor for small towns, to be involved in your community and know the history of it,” she said. “This is a great way to learn both of those things.”

Plunkett news By Deloris Sutherland Correspondent Hope that everyone is having a great summer! After the rain, our gardens are a real forest. The Plunkett Friendship Club had enjoyed a lovely potluck supper on Tuesday, August 4th and then enjoyed a few games of Kiaser. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy an evening out. Several folks enjoyed the Country Music Jamboree which was held at Annaheim on August 7th to the 9th. Bob and Renee Clanelle spent a few days at Waskesue fishing and camping. Get well greetings go out to Elvina Pray of Humboldt who fell and broke her leg and is in Humboldt Hospital. Get well wishes also go out to anyone else ill and in the hospital. We wish them all a speedy recovery. 40th anniversary greetings go out to Bob and Jenny Gray here in Plunkett on August 23. Also to Graham and Cathy Turnbull of Saskatoon who also celebrate their 40th on the same day. August is a busy month, as we are busy freezing vegetables and making pickles. We spent last weekend in Saskatoon with family members. Plunkett folks welcome any new folks that have moved into town.

Bill and Louisa Stroheber of Saskatoon, formerly of Plunkett, recently visited folks in Watrous. This week is supposed to be a hot one, as we need some real hot days to dry up fields that got three to five inches of rain recently. Plunkett folks send their deepest sympathy to Gizella Toth of Watrous, formerly of Plunkett, on the recent passing of her brother in Raymore.

In Humboldt on Friday, there will be perogies sold by the All-Saints Ukrainian Catholic Church folks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone having any news for the paper, please phone me at (306) 944-4852. Thank you.

Crop report for Aug. 4-10 Producers now have four per cent of the 2015 crop combined and five per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Sixty-two per cent of fall rye, 34 per cent of winter wheat, 19 per cent of field peas and 17 per cent of lentils are now in the bin. Six per cent of canola and three per cent of mustard are swathed. Warm and relatively dry conditions are helping crops develop quickly. Rainfall this past week ranged from trace amounts to more than three inches in some areas. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 10 per cent surplus, 72

15083MF2

per cent adequate, 17 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 66 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and four per cent very short. Haying continues as time and weather permit. The estimated average dryland hay yields—with the five-year average in parentheses—are as follows: alfalfa – 0.9 (1.72) tons per acre; alfalfa/ brome hay – 1.1 (1.72) tons per acre; other tame hay 0.8 (1.4) tons per acre; wild hay – 0.8 (1.26) tons per acre; and greenfeed – 1.4 (2.14) tons per acre. On irrigated land, the estimated average hay

yields—with the five-year average in parentheses—are as follows: alfalfa – 2.6 (2.6) tons per acre; alfalfa/brome hay – 2.9 (2.64) tons per acre; other tame hay 2.6 (3.1*) tons per acre; and greenfeed – 2.8 (3.14) tons per acre. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products. It is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/FeedForageListing. Some crop damage was caused by localized flooding, hail, wind and insects such as aphids and diamondback moths. Farmers are busy with harvest operations.

MEYER: Marie Christina July 25, 1924 - Aug. 9, 2015 The family of Mrs. Marie Christina (nee Smith) of Bruno, SK, sadly announces her sudden a n d u n ex p e c te d p a s s i n g o n Sunday, August 9, 2015, at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, SK. She was 91 years of age, the last sur viving member of her siblings, and still very young-atheart. Marie, the only girl in a family of boys, was born on July 25, 1924, to William and Mary (nee Lohman) (Rauw) Smith at their home in Bruno. She grew up there and attended Bruno S c h o o l w h e r e she attained her Grade 8 education. Mar ie then stayed home to help with the domestic chores and with raising her siblings. She also worked at Battel’s General Store and Schwinghammer’s Store. On October 16, 1945, she married Sylvester “Syl Meyer in Bruno. Marie didn’t have far to move, because she and Syl began their life together in the house right next door to her parents’ home, where she was raised. Five children, four sons and one daughter, were born to them. A hard worker from early on, over the years, Marie was a dedicated homemaker, helped with the family’s mixed-farm operation one mile north of Bruno, was employed at Doctor Henning’s office in town, and sold Fuller Brush products. In their retirement years, Marie and Syl enjoyed travelling in their motorhome and playing golf. As well, they both had a passion for playing cards, and spent innumerable hours at that pastime with friends and family, eventually sharing that passion with their grandchildren. Syl passed away on November 20, 1994. Marie continued to reside in their home until the present. She still enjoyed traveling, especially to see for herself when there was a new great-grandchild or something new in the lives of one of her family members, whether it was a new home, renovation, or a Mexico condo, she made a point to check every one out. Marie was also the best mentor, more than willing to share her vast knowledge, especially in areas of baking, cooking, gardening, and bird watching. She has taught essentially every one of her children and grandchildren the art of making her famous cinnamon buns. Marie was many things to many people; a loving mother, grandmother and aunt, and a loyal friend. She touched the hearts of many, including her children’s friends, whom she treated as part of the family. Marie took each role very seriously and religiously, and did her own social media with only the use of personal contact, mostly the telephone. A very thoughtful lady, she always remembered bir thdays or special occasions, and phoned each and every one on their special day or, at the minimum, to extend Christmas wishes. Marie was very independent, open and honest, and did not “sugar coat anything. She also became affectionately known as “the Gum Lady when she worked at Dr. Henning’s office, because she gave out sticks of Juicy Fruit to the patients. Her smile that could light up the room and her beautiful sparkling eyes that were like none other will be sorely missed by all whom she came in contact with. Marie will be lovingly remembered by four children, 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren: Peter(Margaret) Meyer and family, Cal(Jodi) and children Halle and Maggie, and Corey(Sheri) and children Jake and Jeremy; Mar yAnn(Ted) Kowalsky and family, Lanette(Kurt) Nordick and children Darion, Haden and Corson, and Bryce; Victor(Jennifer) Meyer and family, Tracey, Trevor, and Heather(Paulo) Benevides and son Joseph; and Robert(Juanita) Meyer and family, Carla(Ryan) Weyland and children Nash and Kennedy, Carmen(Tim) Schroyen and son Lucas, and Lee(Lauren); daughter-in-law, Wendy Meyer and family, Kendra(Mike) Robertson and daughter Lila; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Sylvester Meyer (1994); one son, Cyril Meyer (2002); parents, William and Mary (nee Lohman) (Rauw) Smith; and by ten brothers (two in infancy). The Prayer Service for Marie was held at St. Bruno R.C. Church, Bruno, on Thursday, August 12, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., led by Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Scripture readers were: Carla Weyland and Kendra Robertson, the eulogy was delivered by Ted Kowalsky, and the memorial table attendants were Beatty Krentz and Myrna Krentz. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Bruno R.C. Church on Friday, August 13, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Others taking part were: Myrna Thimm, crossbearer; Ben Pulvermacher and David Anderson, altar servers; Lanette Nordick and Tracey Meyer, scripture readers; Carmen Schroyen, intentions; Heather Benevides and Carmen Schroyen, giftbearers; Lucille Grainger, Eucharistic minister; Margaret Keehborn and Joan Rieger, memorial table attendants. An honor guard was formed by the C.W.L. Honorary pallbearers were all Marie’s close friends, as well as all others who shared in her life. Active pallbearers were: Cal Meyer, Corey Meyer, Bryce Kowalsky, Trevor Meyer, Lee Meyer, and Mike Robertson. Interment followed at St. Bruno R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Bruno Friendship Centre, Prairieview Enriched Housing, Bruno, or the St. Bruno R.C. Church Fund. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt.

Information session to be held about Quill Lake flooding By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer

In an ongoing effort to manage the Quill Lakes flooding concerns, the Water Security Agency (WSA) is holding several open houses for anybody who wants to come and receive information about the situation and learn about potential solutions the WSA is considering. For the past several years, the water level in and around the Quills has been rising steadily and hasn’t been evaporating. A group of people, including Kerry Holderness with the RM of Quill Lake, brought flood

concerns to the WSA in 2012 and since then have been pushing for a solution to the problem. One of the bigger concerns is compensation for farmers who have lost land to the flooding. It’s estimated that 20-25,000 acres of high-producing farmland has been lost to the flooding. Now, the WSA is considering a plan to divert water away from the Quills to Last Mountain Lake and is holding information sessions in Bulyea, Regina, and Wynyard. The Wynyard session will take place at the Wynyard Civic Centre from 1-8 p.m. on Aug. 27 for those interested.

Once upon a time, there was a musical theatre camp By Robin tarnowetzki Journal staff writer The fifth Marysburg Centre of the Arts Musical Theatre Camp took place from Aug. 10-14 with 20 kids learning the ins and outs of drama, singing, dance, set design, props, costumes and makeup, culminating in a performance of Fractured Fairytales. “Everything we did was related to what happens in music theatre, said Sharon Carter, who co-ordinated the camp along with Rita Frank. The kids involved came from around the region, including Bruno, Middle Lake, Humboldt, Saskatoon, Clavet, and Muenster, ranging in age from 7-13. “One of the reasons we do this is because we want to give kids who wouldn’t normally have this kind of opportunity given to them the experience of doing something like this, Carter said. She said that at the beginning of camp, especially with younger kids, there’s some skepticism about

the experience over the week.â€? The camps don’t always get to run every summer, but to Carter, it’s important to give the experience of being involved in the arts. “This is a way to give children an experience. It’s only for one week, but it’s a quite intensive week, so they really get a feel for what’s involved in this,â€? she said. “If children don’t experience this at a young age, why would they want to be involved in this later in life?â€? All the sets are made by the kids and the songs and lines are memorized over the course of the camp to prepare for the final performance that took place on Aug. 14. “It was excellent. We had a fabulous audience,â€? Carter said. “The family members just loved it. For some of them it’s a surprise to see how far their chilphoto by Robin Tarnowetzki dren come from when they started and in that week what is accomplished.â€? With all of Carter’s manyt years of whether this is something that they want to do. By the experience in the arts, “in some cases it’s life changing end, Carter said that wariness typically disappeared. for some of the children to be involved in something “By the end‌it’s like, ‘Oh for sure, we’re doing this like this,â€? she said. “All of a sudden they see possibilinext year.’ There’s a lot of confidence that they get in ties that they wouldn’t otherwise have.â€?

New collaborative program for nurses at HDHC By Melanie Jacob Journal Contributor

With nursing shortages remaining a consistent problem, it’s a good thing the nursing program in Humboldt has seen more than 75 students trained. The program is aimed towards encouraging health care professionals to work in rural practices by letting them experience it. “What’s unique about this program is that it’s focusing on interprofessional aspects in rural and health practice, said Dr. Hope Bilinski, associate dean of the College of Nursing for the University of Saskatchewan. “Humboldt area is where many students go in health sciences such as nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy and nutrition, and medicine. This program pulls those students together. The program is based on a model of patient first care and uses a collaborative practice between the various health care professions. It’s known as Interprofessional Education (IPE) in rural Saskatchewan. Since the real world is beginning to use this model, they want new graduates to be able to adapt to this environment right after their post-secondary education. This means that it would be ideal to educate them using this method as well. “The unique thing about a collaborative practice is that everyone contributes to the health of the patient, said Bilinski. “When these students work together on a case, they each contribute something unique from nursing, medicine, (etc.) towards the care of the patient. The idea is that everyone decided what their contributions are and how they can work together. It’s a unique form of shared leadership and communication that is still rather new in the medical professional world.

Among all the health science disciplines in the program, close to 100 students have graduated from IPE. Bilinski is already aware of some students that have chosen to stay and practice in rural areas. “A lot of times, students don’t have an understanding or there’s a stereotype of rural practice, she said. “This (program) provides an opportunity to get more experience and perspective on rural communities. By situating students in Humboldt, they get the benefit of experiencing rural life while also having

access to city conveniences. Bilinski was emphatic about expressing her gratitude to the Humboldt District Health Complex (HDHC) in particular for its co-operation in lending its facility for the students to use. Aside from just the health professionals being willing to help, patients have also been willing to let the students get involved in their care, which takes a certain amount of trust. Bilinski called this capitalizing on the partnership with the community.
