Recognizing a century of hard work by caitie mcrae Journal editor The Century Family Farm Award. There are many recipients of it. Many, many, in fact, just in the greater Humboldt area. There’s the Christopherson farm in Weldon, the Puetz, Ries and Schmitz farms of Humboldt, the Wilson farm in Archerwill, the Lloyd farm in Tisdale and the Melstead farm in Wynyard. And much more than that. There were 34 farms in the area bestowed with the award in 2013, celebrating Saskatchewan farm families who have farmed the same land for 100 years or more. Recipients receive a replica of the original land grant for their family’s property, 12 ISC Century Family Farm Award certificates and a choice between a plaque or a cedar gate sign. “The Incredible The Mathieson’s chose a Quill Lake plaque, which is hanging on their porch, someGeneral Store thing they proudly & Hardware put up after receivthat has a little bit of everything.” ing the award in July; a celebratory weekend family gathering folWelding Supplies lowed. John’s father, James Quill Lake Mathieson, came over to Canada from Scotland in the early 20th century, leaving behind his wife, Margaret, and baby son, temporarily, while he searched for work. “Probably because there wasn’t much opportunity in Scotland at that time,” Tom said. He had an opportunity to purchase some land in 1909, which normally took about two years, given the process where enough land had to be cleared in order to homestead it; his wife and baby John arrived soon after. Tom suspects the farm was officially established in 1911 then. “Grandpa ran the farm as both livestock and

Lab grown beef? Yes way It’s hard to beat the enticing aroma of beef sizzling on the barbecue and the satisfaction of eating a perfectly cooked burger or steak. So when the news articles appeared over the August long weekend on the cooking and tasting of the world’s first lab-grown beef burger, developed at Maastricht University in the Netherlands over a five year period and at a cost of more than $300,000, the reaction was predictable. Online readers found the idea of eating lab-

grown beef distasteful at best. Paired with beef consumption data from Statistics Canada that shows per capita beef and total meat consumption rose in 2012, and Health Canada’s recommending beef as a great first food for infants at six months of age, all indications are that this latest project of the antianimal agriculture crowd is headed for an uphill battle in the court of public opinion. It makes no sense to devote significant funds and resources to creating

a hamburger in a lab when consumers already have a ready supply of affordable, delicious and nutrient-rich ground beef available at the supermarket. When it comes to the great taste of beef there is no comparison – particularly if the choice is between beef harvested from sustainably raised animals, or threads of protein grown in a petri-dish. The lab-grown meat in this particular project is touted by its promoters as the way to ‘help feed the world and fight climate change’ and as a way to mitigate animal welfare concerns. The project is funded by Google cofounder Sergey Brin, who said he was motivated by a concern for animal wel-

fare. It is also supported by PETA. What’s missing from this premise is the sustainability efforts of producers and the industry as a whole to ensure the industry will be able to meet the needs of a growing global demand for protein responsibly. CCA belongs to a number of groups with a sustainability focus including the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and has spearheaded a Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. Environmentally, socially and economically sustainable beef production is a key pillar of the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC). Research funded by the BCRC has led to improvements in produc-

tivity and efficiency, which have clear implications for environmental sustainability. Improvements in feed efficiency and shortening the required number of days needed to finish fed cattle reduces the amount of methane and manure produced and resources used per pound of beef. Improvements in forage and grassland productivity lead to several environmental benefits, including increased carbon sequestration, improved wildlife habitat, contributes to biodiversity, helps maintain healthy watersheds, and reduces soil erosion. In order to quantify the environmental benefits of cattle production, research in the proposed second Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster, a partnership through the BCRC and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, will examine the environmental footprint of the Canadian beef industry. In the livestock business, good commerce includes good animal welfare. Cattle producers care for their animals every day, and that care shows up in the great taste of our product. The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle, which governs areas including pain management, has recently undergone an updating process through the National Farm Animal Care Council. The Code

uses valid, science-based procedures that have been vetted by a council of experts. The CCA would like consumers to know that they have many reasons to continue to feel good about eating beef. North America’s cattle industry has been very successful in creating more high quality protein with fewer resources. Improvements achieved between 1977 and 2007 means that modern beef production uses 33 per cent less land, 12 per cent less water, 19 per cent less feed and nine per cent less fossil fuel energy than equivalent beef production in 1977. Cattle producers are long-time partners with the environment -- many are second, third and fourth generation families -- and work to conserve wildlife and its habitat. Raising beef cattle provides jobs that sustain rural communities, utilizes unproductive land to produce a highly nutritious food product for the human diet, and protects habitat and wildlife. Wellmanaged cattle operations deliver ecosystem services that benefit the environment and society as a whole. These are just some of the real-life benefits of sustainable beef production that lab-grown beef can’t match.

Assess canola disease before farming The week or two before swathing or during swathing are the best times to survey the disease situation in your canola fields. Large lesions — the ones that will lead to yield loss — are easiest to spot at this stage and when plants are still standing. And clubroot galls, if present, are larger and easier to find. “Get off the swather a few times in each field and take a look,” says Greg Sekulic, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. “To identify diseases present and their severity are keys to management. A close look now gives you the best hope of early detection of clubroot or of a rising blackleg threat, for example.” Growers can use this scouting information to plan rotations, choose varieties, and update fungicide decisionmaking for next year. In most cases, fungicide is not effective at this stage of the season. In cases where fungicide use is still possible for the target disease, use the tool at www. spraytoswath.ca to check on pre-harvest intervals. Here’s how to identify the major diseases of canola as fields near the swathing stage: Sclerotinia stem rot: Look for areas with lodged or prematurely ripened plants. Examine the lower to middle areas of the stem looking for large bleached or tan lesions. In serious cases, white, downy growth appears on green stems. As the infected stem dries, it will be bleached

Grey silvery to purplish patches develop on stem. These can cover whole stems and continue to spread in stubble as plants decompose. Grey stem usually infects too late to cause significant yield loss. To differentiate blackleg and grey stem at the end of the season, cut the lower stem and look for dead blackened tissue in the crown — a characteristic of blackleg, not grey stem. Survey scientifically: Identifying diseases present in a field is important for early detection and management. So do check those sickly damaged looking plants. But for an overall assessment of disease severity, the survey has to be random. “Disease assessment that concentrates only on damaged plants or only in a particularly bad part of the field can give a skewed overall impression of the disease threat,” Sekulic says. “Following a few disease survey protocols can give a better impression of the true threat.” Stop at five random spots in the field before swathing or while swathing and check 20 standing plants at each spot. Count how many have disease, identify the disease, and then rate the diseases severity if you want. “That’s what provincial disease surveyors do,” Sekulic says. “By following these steps, growers will have results they can use to compare their situation with the provincial disease reports.”

They look at the hard work, long hours, low profit margins and decide it’s not for them.” If you read his work, you’ll know that many of Daniels’s recent columns have been about the future of farming. As populous countries like Brazil, China and India lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and into a new middle class, the worldwide demand for meat should rise as well. The problem for farmers is that producing meat in the form of hogs and cows is a relatively inefficient process. “It’s not a good use of land,” Daniels said. “Converting 30 bushels of wheat into a couple pounds of meat is not efficient. We’d be better off using that wheat for human consumption. We have to come to terms with how we will meet that growing demand for meat.” The future in protein production could be in insects such as grasshoppers, which are already a plentiful and inexpensive source of protein in many parts of the world. Daniels also mentions the recent announcement of a lab-grown hamburger in the United Kingdom as an interesting development. Before you start to worry about eating grasshoppers and test-tube burgers, it’s important to remember that these will probably be very gradual changes. Nevertheless, Daniels is not even going to try to predict what farming will look like in a couple decades. “Over the next 10 to 20 years I can’t even imagine what we’ll see,” he said. “If we had done this interview 10 years ago it wouldn’t have been possible for farmers in this part of Saskatchewan to grow soybeans but now they can. It also would have been ridiculous to think that canola would be the number one crop — it had been wheat for decades.” From someone who’s both participated and observed farming, there’s no better way to put it — one of the world’s oldest professions faces a future as uncertain as it ever has.

Canadian pulse industry partners with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to drive innovation through research Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Gerry Ritz announced July 29 that the Government of Canada will invest up to $15 million in funding, in partnership with the multi-million dollar grower check-off investment, to support the continued development of the Canadian pulse industry. Pulses such as peas, beans, chickpeas and lentils play a significant role in Canada’s agriculture portfolio. Canada is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of pulses, with nearly $2 billion in exports reaching more than 150 countries each year.

“Research is key to ensuring Canada maintains its position as a global leader,” says Nick Sekulic, Chair of Pulse Canada and Commissioner of the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission. “Consistently working to refine our product quality and improve production processes keeps us a step ahead of our competitors.” “On behalf of Canadian pulse farmers, processors and exporters, I want to thank the federal government for their continued support and investment in our industry,” said Lee Moats, Vice Chair of Pulse Canada and a Director on Saskatch-

ewan Pulse Growers’ Board. “This funding will augment existing research investments to advance the sustainable production and profitability of the Canadian pulse industry.” Projects will serve to strengthen the industry by delivering: Improved varieties of pulses with superior agronomic, quality and disease-resistance characteristics Support for growers, and improved management practices resulting in maximum yield, minimum disease, efficient use of fertilizers, and farm sustainability Enhanced knowl-

edge of pulse ingredient composition, functionality and use in commercial food product applications Increased knowledge of the health benefits of pulse consumption, including impact on satiety, food intake, blood sugar control and gut health leading to greater marketing opportunities “Today’s funding announcement is an investment in the future of the pulse industry,” says Randy Froese, Treasurer of Pulse Canada and Director of the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association. “It will help propel us forward by creating new opportunities for pulses in

the global food industry.” Pulse Canada is the national association representing growers, traders and processors of Canadian pulse

crops (peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas). Canada is the world’s largest supplier of pulses, with exports reaching more than 150 countries

The nuisance that is foxtail barley Nadia Mori, MSc, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Watrous Regional Services Office Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum) is a true nuisance to the forage producer. The plant tolerates not only very wet, but also very dry conditions, as well as high salt concentrations (six to 26 millimhos/cm) giving it a competitive advantage over other plants in these niches. Although the plants are highly nutritious in the spring before seed set, they are not grazed by live-

stock once the seed head appears. The long and stiff awns break off easily and can lodge in the mouth, nose or eyes of livestock to cause abscesses, lumpy jaw and calf diptheria. Because the seedhead breaks into many smaller pieces, foxtail barley spreads easily by wind and can spread quickly over large areas. If mowing is chosen as a measure to prevent further seed spread, it should be conducted within 10 day s of seed head emergence to prevent the formation of viable seed. Cultural Control Outside of the extreme conditions mentioned

above, foxtail barley is generally not competitive with a healthy forage stand. Selecting forages adapted to the soil type and salinity present can reduce the extent of a foxtail barley infestation. Tall wheatgrass, green wheatgrass, creeping foxtail and tall fescue compete well with foxtail barely. When buying seed, be sure to ask for a “Certificate of Analysis” of the certified seed lot being considered to avoid the introduction of noxious or prohibited weeds. If areas where foxtail barley is present are too wet in the spring, fall seeding can be considered. Seeding rates should be increased by 20 per cent to allow for increased seed mortality over the winter. Chemical Control If the forage stand is heavily infested, glyphosate can be used to control foxtail barley prior to forage re-establishment. Very early spring application should be avoided since target foliage is often protected by the old tuft material. Applying the recommended rate prior to seed head initiation or before the drying up of the lower leaves will provide control of the weed. Avoid grazing treated forage for three to five days after application to allow time for glyphosate translocation to all areas of the plant. Kerb 50-WSP is registered for use on established grass/legume pastures for control of foxtail barley, but is expensive. Application should occur between October 1 and freeze up. At this time established perennial foxtail barley clumps as well as seedlings and juvenile plants established through the growing season are present as targets. Kerb also controls seedlings as they emerge from the soil. Label details about restrictions and the use of Kerb should be understood and followed closely. Please refer to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture 2013 Guide to Crop Protection for application rates and restrictions. CCA, coalition, seek preliminary injunction in COOL case The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), as part of a coalition of meat and livestock organizations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, filed a motion with the U.S. District Court yesterday seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent implementation of the recently amended U.S. mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) regulation pending resolution of the coalition lawsuit filed July 8. The coalition lawsuit asks the court to strike down the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) May 23 revision to the COOL regulation while the preliminary injunction motion seeks to block implementation of the COOL regulation pending resolution of the lawsuit. Both the lawsuit and motion for a preliminary injunction were filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The coalition expects that the preliminary injunction motion, filed late Thursday, will be considered within weeks, although there is no specific timeline. The CCA is confident that the motion will be successful as it more than meets all requirements set out under U.S. law. The preliminary injunction motion argues that if the

May 23 rule were to be enforced as USDA plans to do in November, it would cause irreparable harm to the U.S. meat and livestock industry and is not in the public interest. “The CCA along with these groups and through other actions will continue to turn up the heat on USDA to get the COOL dispute resolved,” said CCA President Martin Unrau. “While this lawsuit and preliminary injunction have the potential to bring down COOL, ultimately, we would be satisfied if the U.S. Congress would pass an amendment to the m-COOL legislation to eliminate the discrimination on imported livestock and meat.” The coalition gained another member this week as Mexico’s National Confederation of Livestock Organizations joined the lawsuit. Mexico joins plaintiffs the American Association of Meat Processors, American Meat Institute, CCA, Canadian Pork Council, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, North American Meat Association, and Southwest Meat Association. The coalition lawsuit and motion for a preliminary injunction are the latest efforts to get the COOL issue resolved. Last month,

the Government of Canada released a list of U.S. commodities that could be targeted for retaliation in relation to the COOL dispute. The Government of Canada has said it could seek retaliatory compensation of approximately $1.1 billion following the completion of ongoing World Trade Organization (WTO) proceedings, which will move forward independently of this U.S. based litigation. “CCA is encouraging the Government of Canada to seek authorization to implement those tariffs by obtaining a WTO ruling that the U.S. has not complied with the WTO dispute panel decision that COOL causes discrimination against imported cattle in the U.S. marketplace,” Unrau said. The CCA’s position remains that the only outcome that would bring the U.S. into compliance with the WTO ruling of July 2012, which found that COOL violates the U.S.’s WTO obligations, is to amend the COOL legislation to allow either a single mandatory label for all meat produced in the U.S. or to allow for voluntary labelling. The CCA has to date spent in excess of $2 million in legal and advocacy expenses to fight COOL.

To succeed in farming, go to the market Brenda Stefanson, PAg Regional Farm Business Management Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Watrous Demand in the marketplace creates a business opportunity, not the other way around! Marketing your product or service directly impacts your overall business strategy. It is important to understand the issues relating to the marketing and sale of your products in order to maximize your profits. Unless you have a good knowledge of the sector you operate in, and how your products fit into that sector, it is difficult to focus on anything other than

production. Changes in consumer demand, local and global competition, and other forces in world markets have resulted in the business of agriculture moving from being production focused to market focused. It is therefore very important to have the knowledge and information you need to make informed decisions about the marketing of your products and whether you should (or can) diversify into other product areas. In order for your business to thrive, it is crucial that you understand your buyers’ needs, taking into consideration whether you are dealing with local, regional, na-

tional, or international distributors and retailers. Knowing what your buyers’ needs are and where you can provide for those needs, is becoming increasingly important and will keep you one step ahead of your competition. Commodity marketers need to understand global supply and demand, world weather patterns, stock-to-use ratios and factors affecting world distribution of your commodity. All these factors affect what you should grow and how, when and at what price you should sell. Whether you have been in business for several years, are trying to expand your current

business, or are looking to start a new venture, assessing your marketing skills and abilities will help you determine what areas of marketing you need to examine and develop. What can you do? • Maintain a current understanding of how the market operates. • Understand market trends and how they impact demand for and price of your product. • Make sure there is a market or market potential for your product or service. • Explore and evaluate alternative or new market opportunities. • Assess your marketing skills and knowledge and if needed, ob-

formation resources and services. • Enhance your understanding of the commodity futures market and the marketing tools it provides. Assess its potential use in your marketing and risk management plan. Save alfalfa from winter’s bitter chill Nadia Mori, MSc, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Watrous Regional Services Office Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

If not properly managed, alfalfa can suffer winter injury or winterkill. Several factors play into good winter survival of your alfalfa stand. Taking a Second Cut For alfalfa, early fall is a critical time as plants are storing nutrients needed to survive the upcoming winter. Cutting plants during this period adds double the stress to the plants as they have to expend energy for regrowth as well as nutrient storage. During a minimum of six weeks after cutting, alfalfa plants need good growing conditions to ensure sufficient regrowth and energy storage to support winter survival. Plants harvested after August 15th may not have six weeks before a killing frost and may be susceptible to winter kill. A killing frost is considered minus five degrees Celsius or lower. Harvesting after a killing frost does not affect food reserves but reduces the amount of stubble which helps trap snow. The trapped snow provides an important insulating blanked for alfalfa crowns. Fertility If alfalfa makes up 50% or more of the production in the stand and was properly inoculated at seeding, nitrogen is generally not a concern in the forage stand as the alfalfa will fix the nitrogen required by the stand. Phosphorus, potassium and sulphur are the three nutrients which should be considered in stands with large pro-

portions of legumes. Phosphorus and potassium are particularly important as they support root and nodule health and over-wintering capability. Both of these nutrients can be fall applied as they are relatively immobile in the soil and will not leach or volatilize to the atmosphere like nitrogen. The most cost-effective way to maintain adequate soil fertility is to do a fall soil test. Stand Health An otherwise healthy stand can be impaired by insects and disease such as alfalfa weevils and downy mildew. Scouting for insects during June is important in noticing and minimizing insect feeding damage while disease resistant alfalfa varieties are your best defense against various root and leaf diseases. Environmental Factors Not all factors in alfalfa fall management are under your control. For example, wet soil conditions in the fall can reduce the plants ability to harden prior to winter. Lack of snow cover is also a concern as alfalfa crowns can be exposed to extreme cold. Snow cover can be improved by leaving sufficient stubble height. Planting cold tolerant and disease resistant varieties along with a good fertility program and careful cutting management will help winterize your alfalfa stand for better longevity and productivity.
