Kemway Lanes We bought the bowling alley on March 1, 1986. There was my two brothers and me at the time, Ken, Eric & Martin. In fact, that’s how we came up with the name Kemway Lanes; it’s the first initial from each of our names. Martin only stayed for about a year and had a tough time with the transition from Toronto to Humboldt. For me, I had been out here since 1975, and worked at the Lanigan potash mine for 10 years. Ken was still in our hometown of St. Catharines, Ont., and worked as a baker first for The National Bakery and then for Dominion. Ken was the bowler out of all of us, having won several provincial and national titles, as well as competing on the CBC bowling championships. He was a really good bowler back then (notice I said back then haha). So anyway, the name Kemway still

works because the M is still represented by our wives; Ken’s wife is Mary and my wife’s name is Myrna. When we first started out, we just had the bowling alley and rented the space out on the side to Reflections by Richard. When he moved, that’s when we decided to do something ourselves in that space. It became a restaurant and ice cream parlour, which we named Flavours. It has been very successful for us, since our main goal at the time was to find something that would keep us busy once the leagues were done. Additionally, we’re finding that our public bowling in the summer months has increased quite a bit, so we are really happy about that. In 1995 we inquired about the U-Haul business because we had room at the back of our building. Two years later, we were

Bowling becomes local staple approached by the Saskatchewan Transportation Company as to if we would be interested in having the bus stop outside our building. We thought it would be a good fit with the restaurant, so we agreed. It’s really enjoyable to see all the people that the bus brings in, so the addition of the bus, the U-Haul company and Flavours have done very well for us. The best part? Hearing people say their kids were asking if they could go to Flavours for an ice cream cone. We have tried to be involved in the community as much as we can, but obviously with maintaining these businesses, it keeps us very busy. Nonetheless, Ken has been the chair of the Humboldt Special Olympics for several years. The athletes here in Humboldt really look forward to Ken’s expertise in bowling and always want to show him their scores. Myself, I was with Humboldt Big Brother Big Sisters for 20 years and really enjoyed

every minute of it. We still maintain a really strong relationship with them and work well together for their annual Bowl for Kids Sake, which is always a huge success, I was also involved with the Water Ridge Park committee. Everyone who helped work on that project is very pleased with the way it turned out and hope that the community enjoys it as well. Going into our 28th year at Kemway Lanes, we’ve had a lot of great people work for us, and some for a long time. We’ve watched many of the young students go on to become very successful and still keep in touch with us. Thank you Humboldt for all your support over our 28 years and we look forward to many more. Bowling is something that everyone can do and is great as a competitive sport or just as a family outing. Like our name says “KEMWAY LANES - YOUR FAMILY FUN CENTRE”

Bruno Redi-Mix

Proud small-town local business

To get your yard and garden ready for winter and next year, Misty Gardens suggests: • The most important time to water your trees and shrubs is mid-October. Water all your trees and shrubs, particularly evergreens. This will get them off to a good start next spring, especially under dry or drought conditions. • The best time to prune trees and shrubs is in the fall after the leaves fall off or in the spring before the new leaves come out with a couple of exceptions.

o Birch and maples should only be pruned in the fall when the sap is going down o Spring-flowering shrubs can be pruned right after you have enjoyed the flowers.

• A good time to move perennials is when the leaves turn fall colours • Bulbs can be planted any time in the fall up to freeze up. One mile east of Humboldt Ph: 682-5737 Hours: Monday to Saturday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm 2 ECT Friday, October 4, 2013

We serve a large surrounding area and offer competitive prices and quality service.

Dryden Block is only 23, but he’s been running his own business, Stryde Contracting Ltd., for two years. After spending a few years doing landscaping and excavating, Block decided to go into business on his own. “I saw a need around the community and decided I could fill that void,” Block said. Block’s company offers a wide range of services, from landscaping to snow removal and trenching. The company is based in LeRoy and does most of its business there and in Lanigan, though Block said he’s hoping to do more business in Humboldt in the future. “It’s a growing community and there’s a lot of work there,” he said.

While Block has a lot of confidence in the operations side, he’s still learning the ropes when it comes to the business side of things. The company does residential, commercial and farm work. Currently Block is the company’s only employee, though he has hired summer students in the past and of course is hoping to hire full-time employees as soon as possible. In the future Block is hoping to expand Stryde’s services into excavating, an area he’s familiar with from his younger days. Whatever the job and, despite his youth, Block is committed to turning his youthful enthusiasm into a company that will serve the area for decades to come.

We would be happy help you with any of your concrete or gravel needs! Please contact us for a free estimate today. Family business owned and operated north of Bruno since 1976

Createk Renovations

Enjoys being a small business Brent Stadnick, owner and operator of Createk Renovations, has lived in Saskatchewan his whole life. He settled in Humboldt with his family when he was 8 years old. Now, he is raising his own small family here and enjoys the aspects of being a small business where his profits stay within the community. He is community focused and looks forward to being more active as a volunteer. He has branched out into all aspects of interior renovations and specializes in residential and office renovations. He takes great pride in doing the job right. An example of this is a WCB claim he did in Bruno. The client’s home had uneven floors and this needed to

be fixed so he could move around with his walker. Because the floors were so bad, the client was essentially bound to his bed. But as the renovation got underway, and the floors were replaced, the client was now able to move around with his walker; he even helped out with the renovations. As Brent says, there was a dramatic difference in the client; from being bed bound to being free to move around again. He is now even back at work. Brent is presently working on the upcoming art gallery at the old Merchants Bank in downtown Humboldt. Go by and see an example of his labour! He also does claims for WCB, Wawanesa, and SGI.

Wes’s Handyman Services

Expert painter and great deck builder Wes’s Handyman Services was established in Humboldt nine years ago. Born in Medicine Hat, AB, Wes did many things, finally ending up in a fishing camp in Northern Saskatchewan on Wollaston Lake for five years. But wintering up North can be quite isolating, so he took a friend up on an offer to come and see the wonders of a city called Humboldt. Wes took to Humboldt and opened up his own business as he enjoyed working with his hands and meeting people. Along the way, one of the people he met was his wife, Elizabeth, a nurse at the hospital. They have now been married for five years, and enjoy biking and motorcycling around town, as well as taking in local art galleries, and cooking. Wes also has two grown children;

Jennifer, who is married to Kevin, is a stay-at-home mom with three children in Kelowna, BC; and his son Clay who does high tower installations and high tower rescues in Grand Prairie, AB. Wes’s Handyman Services specializes in painting but does small indoor renovations as well, in addition to fences, decks, and sheds. His work takes him around Humboldt and district. If you’re interested, make sure you check out his workmanship.; he has done work on the upcoming Humboldt Gallery that will take over the former Merchants Bank, and is also responsible for painting the outside of the Good Neighbour Store. If you need an expert painter or a great deck built on which you can barbecue, call Wes’s Handyman Services!

Mike Bunko is the proud owner of MGB Contracting Ltd. Originally from Yorkton, Mike moved with his family to Humboldt when he was a young boy. After graduating from high school, he worked with Shaw Core CSI, a pipeline company that coats pipelines and oil tanks in polyurethane foam and UV protectants. Mike saw spray foam being used on TV as a superior insulator in homes and buildings. He didn’t want to continue working on the road and came back to Humboldt to work as a carpenter. He saw the need for a spray foam insulation company in Humboldt and area, as the only place to get this service was from out of town. He travelled to Mississauga, Ont. for training, invested in the specialized equipment required and started his company in July 2012. MGB Contracting specializes in closed-cell spray foam insulation. This product is used all the time on shows that feature Mike Holmes such as Holmes on Holmes and Holmes Inspections.

This type of insulation provides the highest R-value of available insulation materials with an R value of seven per inch. At two inches of foam, you achieve 98 per cent thermal efficiency. It also provides up to 50 per cent energy savings. Another advantage of spray foam insulation is the rigidity of the product which provides structural integrity to the building. It also minimizes hot and cold spots in the home to improve efficiency and comfort. Closed cell spray foam is the best choice for rim joist spaces because it is difficult to install a proper vapour barrier with fibreglass insulation. It provides a vapour barrier at just two inches thick. Without a proper vapour barrier, condensation can occur which creates mould growth, and eventual rotting of the rim space. Other common spaces for this type of insulation are joist cavities, basement walls, bonus rooms, exterior walls, and the roofline in a house, office, workshops and other buildings.

SPECIALIZING IN SPRAY FOAM INSULATION • Closed-cell spray foam provides

the highest R-Value of available insulation materials.

• 3 inches of foam is 98% thermal efficiency

• Spray foam can provide up to 50% energy savings.

• Spray foam eliminates mold and mildew; doesn’t allow moisture to remain in walls.
