The most recent population statistics according to the 2011 Census show that the village has grown to 422 residents. Village Council has addressed the demand for residential lots and began developing new subdivisions. Construction of new homes in those subdivisions continues steadily. With the first new subdivision being completely sold out, in 2011 the village began development of another new residential subdivision with 14 more lots ready for development; and four of those have already sold. The interest in the village`s residential lots continues to be high. The Village has also recently acquired land for commercial development in the downtown area. The Village has been working to keep up with the regional progress by upgrading some of its current infrastructure also. The new subdivisions have attracted young people to the community, as Muenster offers a great place to raise
a family with small-town caring and a safe place for children. Seniors who want to live in a quiet community have also found it a great place to retire. In the Village is the rental facility of Wolverine Heights which is operated by the Muenster Housing Authority. Muenster has a kindergarten to Grade 12 public school with a great academic offering and also a competitive sports program for the students. The school has installed a new suspended wood floor in their gym through the fundraising efforts of a hardworking group of volunteers. The Village has a public library which runs programs such as a book club, rhyme time, story hour and summer reading programs. For residents interested in sports there are facilities such as a curling rink, community use of St. Peter’s Arena, a number of excellent baseball diamonds where a new concession building serves our outdoor activities. Muenster also has many active volunteer service groups such as the Elks, Knights of Columbus, New Horizon Senior Citi-
zens group, Community Centre groups, an active Sports Club to co-ordinate its minor hockey and baseball, and many more. Muenster has essential services such as a postal outlet, credit union, co-op grocery store and a wide range of other businesses to serve residents. The catholic community of Muenster has also been busy and recently completed a huge restoration project to St. Peter’s Cathedral. This project included upgrading to the entire exterior and interior of the building, along with the installation of stained glass windows. The cathedral is a tourist attraction that features paintings by Berthold Von Imhoff. St. Peter’s College has undergone major renovations to the buildings and also increased the programming offered to students. This recent expansion at St. Peter’s College will attract more young people to the college and also the community. Being affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan makes it a great place for young people to begin their post-secondary education.

Progress in: City of Humboldt Looking back, moving forward. As the City of Humboldt strives to fulfill its mission of being a vibrant, thriving community, much work has been done to try to accommodate, prepare, and plan for the growth of the community. Asset management planning is helping the City manage its infrastructure needs by taking an integrated, lifecycle approach of the City’s assets to maximize benefits, manage risk and provide satisfactory levels of service to the public in a sustainable and e n v i ro n m e n t a l l y responsible manner. Presently, an asset management plan for water and sewer renewal is underway. Moving forward, asset management will become essential to the City’s development of a common, systematic understanding of what needs are most important and how they can be addressed. Reports, studies, and consultations that look at the community’s opportunities, gaps, and challenges have also taken place within the past year. BHP Billiton’s Jansen Project Community Readiness Study investigated the capac-
ity and readiness of communities near the site to adapt to the expected increase in the regional population. A Community Foundation Assessment reviewed community, educational, health, and protective services along with existing

infrastructure and recreational needs and programming to inform the City of Humboldt’s Official Community Plan redevelopment process. A comprehensive transportation plan is also underway. Housing needs were identified through work done by the former Prairie Innovation Enterprise Region
pleted to community facilities, the City is proud many exceptional events such as the RBC Cup and the 2012 Saskatchewan Scotties Tournament of Hearts were successfully hosted here – along with several other regional and provincial conferences, workshops, and seminars. The recent Joint Use Facilities Agreement with Greater Saskatoon Catholic
Schools and Horizon School Division means school and community groups have increased access to such facilities through a central booking location at the Humboldt Uniplex Administration Office. Supporting the activities, programs, and services of Humboldt’s community groups ensures the community remains a vibrant, active, safe, and healthy place to be. Working closely with other communities and stakeholders within the region continues to be a priority. L a s t l y, a n e w strategic planning process is being explored that encourages municipal cultural planning, development, and investment that is coordinated and integrated with other community development activities. The resulting plan would be used to inform decision-making and guide actions to respond to the needs and interests of the community. With a new year ahead, the City of Humboldt looks forward to engaging with residents, partners, business, and industry to help build a strong and dynamic community … contact us at (306) 682-2525.

Progress in: Town of Lanigan The 24 unit housing complex – The Carlton, Lanigan SK
The Community of Lanigan welcomes you to the Land of Potash, where towering head frames touch the prairie skies. Lanigan has been a potash Town since Alwinsal Potash, a German company built a potash mine at Guernsey SK in the 1960s. This was a motorist’s first glimpse of these prairie giants on their way to Saskatoon. The Lanigan Potash Mine is now owned by PotashCorp, the number one potash producer in the world. Soon to join this industry is the BHP Billiton Jansen Mine located a few kilometres north of Jansen. The new Jansen Mine will create 1000 new
jobs in the region and produce 8 million tonnes of potash annually. Stuck in the middle of these industry giants is Lanigan who welcomes the challenges that come from the economic activity they create. A further boost to Lanigan and the region is the construction of a 55 million dollar Canpotex Rail Car Maintenance and Staging Facility located south of the Lanigan Potash Mine. When you add a strong agricultural economy and growing tourism industry, community growth is inevitable. In 2012 the Town of Lanigan approved
building permits valued at over 11 million dollars. Residential Development led the way with permits valued at $10,716,035. Included in this total is 8 Single Family Dwellings valued at $2,516,035, 1 Duplex at $500,000, 2 Four Plex units at $1.2 million and a 24 unit Housing Complex valued at $6.5 million. These developments represent 42 new residential units for Lanigan. Six garage permits were approved having a value of $144,500 and one basement development permit for $13,000. Five deck permits were approved for $16,400, two storage/workshop build-
ings for $35,000 and three commercial permits valued at $460,000. The community just completed a 20 residential lot development on the east side of Town. This project is part of a 112 residential lot development and is located near Lanigan’s nine hole grass greens golf course. A very attractive convenience for the golf enthusiast. In the last Federal Census, Lanigan’s population increased by over 12% to 1390 residents. Town Officials believe the population may now be closer to 1500. Optimism can best describe Lanigan’s future in the Land of Potash.
Pharmasave: A move in the right direction It was a year ago that my wife Lacey and I moved to Humboldt for the opportunity to operate the local Pharmasave. It wasn’t an easy decision, especially because of the timing. Lacey was 5 months pregnant with our first child when the opportunity arrived, and we had to decide whether we should take the leap of faith that Humboldt was the right community for our growing family. We can easily say that the community of Humboldt has exceeded our expectations, and we couldn’t be happier to live here and raise our son Benjamin. Lacey and I both graduated from the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006. During our schooling, we had the opportunity to do our hospital internships at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt. It was then that we thought Humboldt could be our future home. We also have roots from around Humboldt. My father grew up on a farm in Muenster, and Lacey’s parents are originally from Watson. Immediately upon our move to town, we had the reality of a steep learning curve when it came to running a business. We feel like we have only scraped the surface of what we need to learn, but also feel like we have accomplished a lot in our first year. The year 2012 marked a lot of change for Pharmasave. The biggest change was the addition of a state of the art piece of automation used to package medi-
cation for St. Mary’s Villa. Together, along with the staff at St. Mary’s Villa, we can be proud to offer a high-tech medication distribution system that is usually only offered in larger city centres. We are excited to offer this system to Bethany Pioneer Village in Middle Lake as of February this year. Come in to get a glimpse of the new machine in our dispensary. The front store is always changing. Although, we do still have some giftware, we have decided to cut back on the amount that we carry. Instead, we try to bring in a variety of niche items that are unique to Humboldt. The front store manager, Sue Sookeroff, has brought in a variety of different items over the last year such as moccasins and mukluks, Rider gear, jewellery and accessories, purses and scarves, and we have a huge selection of toys for the growing number of young families in Humboldt and the surrounding area. There is always something new at the store to check out. Pharmacist Amanda Burko (right), and Pharmacy Assistant, Sandie McLean (left) received training and education to become certified compression stocking fitters in 2012. Compression stockings help to prevent tired aching feet, and varicose veins. A physician may also prescribe them to help with swelling in a person’s feet or ankles. Come in for a free fitting or for

any questions you may have. There are many new styles to choose from. 2013 looks to bring as much change and excitement as last year! The biggest being a complete renovation to the store! Rather than moving, we have decided to renovate our current location. We love being in the heart of downtown Humboldt, and hope to add to the lure of Main Street by offering a state of the art pharmacy. Some of the changes include adding a private consultation room for improved privacy during medication counselling, and wheelchair accessibility throughout the store, including a customer washroom. Looking back a year ago, and looking forward through 2013, it’s safe to say that our move to Humboldt, and the upcoming changes to Pharmasave are moves in the right direction. Progress in: Resort Village of Manitou Beach The Resort Village of Manitou Beach had a year it won’t soon forget! Early in 2012, Vacay.ca, a highly recognized Canadian travel website listed Manitou Beach as one of the Top 12 Destinations to visit in 2012. Other destinations included Montreal, Niagra Falls, and the Calgary Stampede. Then in summer, Lucy Izon, one of Canada most decorated travel writers writing for MSN. ca and Reader Digest, listed Manitou Beach a Top 10 Canadian Beach. Following high water levels, flooding, and a brief closure of Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa only two years earlier, this was welcome recognition to the Beach. Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa also had a successful year following recent renovations at the facility. This includes renovations to both hotel rooms and the famous spa pool. Occupancy as a result was very high for most of 2012. The Watrous Manitou Marketing Group, a partnership of the Town of Watrous, Resort Village of Manitou Beach, and the RM of Morris, also completed a Community Tourism Plan for the community in 2012. This is the first plan of its kind completed for the community since 1989. The comprehensive plan looks beyond marketing and includes plans to address tourism attractions, businesses, infrastructure, hospitality, and promotion of the tourism industry in Watrous and Manitou Beach. 20 Gallon Parts Washer

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the community of Humboldt and surrounding area. I, Morgan and my husband Daniel Grywacheski, are the proud new owners of the Tim Hortons in Humboldt. We have just recently moved into the community with our 8 month old baby girl, Rozalyn. We moved from Yorkton, where I, Morgan was working as a Registered Nurse and Daniel at the Mosaic Potash Mine. Our little family is extremely proud to now call ourselves residents of this exciting and booming community. We grew up in the small towns of Norquay and Preeceville and look forward to be able to raise our family in Humboldt, where we can have the small town feeling with all the great amenities of a big city. As Tim Hortons’ owners we want to be involved in and support the community by having a direct relationship with many groups and charities throughout the city. We will be actively involved in the community through various sports and activities and we look forward to meeting many new people in the process. We are eager to provide a great restaurant experience in Humboldt 24 hours a day. We hope to grow our Tim Hortons to be a friendly, comfortable place where friends and family can gather over a great cup of coffee. We look forward to meeting the people of Humboldt and area through our restaurant and all the different events happening year round. This year through the Tim Horton’s Children Foundation we will be sending 2 children from Humboldt and area to camp in Kananaskis, Alberta. We have personally toured one of the Tim Hortons Camps and it was an absolutely touching and unforgettable experience. To be able to send 2 children from our community will be very rewarding. We would love to meet you, so please come on in for a coffee and say hello! Friday, January 25, 2013 PROGRESS 7

Progress in: Town of Watson The Town of Watson has continued to prosper throughout 2012 and we believe this trend will continue into 2013. The past year brought about several new and exciting changes to our community. The continued growth and development of our community is a general reflection of the prosperity and increased economic activity in our region as a whole. Watson is very proud to be an active participant in the efforts being put forth by our regional partners to ensure that we are ready to meet the challenges of a growing economy and are committed to working together for the benefit of this region. The most noteworthy item that Watson was proud to celebrate over the past year was the grand opening of our new reverse osmosis water treatment plant. The entire town was switched over the reverse osmosis water in early spring, and we are now pleased to be able to provide some of the highest quality drinking water available. In our continued efforts to meet the needs of our current population and prepare for future growth, work continues into 2013 on well development and lagoon expansion options. Another item that our town is very excited about is the development of a licensed daycare facility. The Watson Regional Daycare Centre received approval for the construction of a 20 spot daycare facility to be attached to the Watson School. A dedicated group of individuals is working with the school, the Horizon School Division, and the Ministry of Education to develop the space. They hope to see the construction of the daycare begin in the near future. Our recreational facilities continue to thrive in Watson. This past summer, our outdoor pool located a McNab Park had a new pool liner installed. This capital project was made possible by the generous donations from our Rec Fund Canvas along with successful grant funding. The entire park had a very positive season with the pool, the campsites and the 9-hole, grass greens
golf course getting a lot of use! Our local skating arena is also experiencing very high usage from our community and surrounding ones. Contributing to the success of the arena is our Recreation Board that has made great efforts to maintain and improve the facility. Beautification is also a priority for Watson. The Watson Economic Development Committee was tasked with naming and enhancing a very large park on the North end of our town. The Mel Molle Park was officially named and dedicated to a long-time
past resident and volunteer. The EDC has exciting plans for the future of the park. Bordering the Mel Molle Park are the fully developed lots that the Town of Watson has for sale. Several of these lots have been sold to both home owners and developers for the construction of spec houses. We expect more sales of these lots in 2013 as the growth and development in Watson continues. If you would like to learn more about Watson, please visit www.townofwatson.ca or call the Town Office at 306-287-3224.

Curves® of Humboldt Introduces New Weight Loss Program that Burns More Fat than Diet Alone New Curves Complete® includes exercise, meal plans, and coaching - for as low as $14.95 a week and no joining fee! Humboldt , SK (Grassroots Newswire) - Curves of Humboldt knows that most people who are serious about losing weight know that they won’t get the results they want by just dieting. They also need to exercise and they need encouragement to stick to the plan. This was the thinking behind the revolutionary new weight loss program Curves Complete® - the only program of its kind on the market that offers exercise, customized meal plans, and coaching in one integrated program. And, according to a Curves of Humboldt staff member, the cost is comparable to what other programs charge for diet alone. What makes the program so successful? “It’s really as simple as 1-2-3,” said Curves’ Registered Dietitian Nadia Rodman. “The Curves circuit gives you strength and cardio training to protect your muscles and burn fat, our proven nutrition plan is fully customizable to your lifestyle, and your Curves coach helps you set goals and reach them one-on-one. If you simply follow the plan - which you can print as a weekly tracking
sheet and take to your coaching sessions - you simply can’t help but lose. Or rather, win.” Preliminary results of Curves members who participated in the program prior to its January public launch have been phenomenal. Findings indicate that nearly 100 percent of weight lost on Curves Complete is body fat, compared to conventional diets in which weight lost typically includes up to 30 percent muscle tissue. By preserving lean muscle, Curves Complete helps maintain or even boost the body’s metabolism for better long term results. Curves Complete is the culmination of years of research involving thousands of study participants. “Ninety-five percent of dieters fail - or lose weight only to gain it all back - not because there’s something wrong with them, but because there’s something wrong with conventional diets,” said Curves’ Director of Exercise & Research Katie Mitchell. “It takes a combination of three things: exercise, diet, and coaching, or motivation, to successfully lose weight as body fat rather than lean muscle and then keep it off.” For Patricia Culbertson, from Ocean City, Florida, the program has been nothing short of a miracle. “Three months ago, I was suffering from depression, hypertension, and

Monico Cresting’s costume rentals prove popular March 1997 was when Monico Cresting Inc. in Humboldt opened its doors. The business, which offers everything from embroidery to laundry service, zipper repairs to mending, alterations and dry cleaning, was the brainchild of Monica Merkosky, who continues to run it today.
Monico Cresting was born when Merkosky purchased Liza Designs, which specialized in custom-designed wind suits and embroidery. In 1998, she also purchased Family Cleaners, and moved it to the businesses current location on Main St. Now, Monico Cresting is the only dry cleaning depot in Humboldt, with a turn-around time of one week. The business has changed and grown throughout the years. In addition to alterations, laundry service and logo design, they also offer an inventory of over 3,000 dance costumes for rent. Monico will also mend and alter the costumes for dance companies. “This part of the business has grown from one seamstress working quarter-time to two full time employees, just to handle the sewing and altercations,” Merkosky said. Monico is the only business that rents costumes on this scale in the area. Part of what sets Monico apart is their staff. In 2012, they hired a seamstress with a diploma in fashion design, which added wedding and graduation dress design to the many facets of their business. This truly makes this multi-talented company a one-stop shop for anything a person needs in their wardrobe department. See Monico Cresting for dance or skating costumes, graduation or wedding dresses, cleaning and mending, as well as embroidery, apparel and promotional products.

Progress in: Village of Middle Lake
You can live in a resort like community with just a short walk to Lucien Lake and Lucien Lake Regional Park. Enjoy the beach, walking trails, fish in the lake, or enjoy a day on the lake, practically at your door step and without the high cost of other resort villages. Middle Lake has a K- 12 school, credit union, grocery
store, Sears Outlet, liquor store, Hotel/Bar/Cafe, many churches, and community groups. This village has recently upgraded the water treatment plant and now supplies reverse osmosis water. We have existing serviced lots for sale, and we are in the process of adding future new lots for sale.
Jerry Kopp bought the assets of Coop implements in Humboldt and carried on in business while picking up different lines of equipment over the years. How has the business grown and changed from its early years: (i.e., staff, service, location, etc.) Has ownership changed hands? In 1993 we bought an existing farm machinery business on Hwy 5 East of Humboldt, and then started selling Arctic Cat and Kawasaki. Because of the acquisition of Agco buying Massey we put up a 10,000 sq ft building in 1995, at Hwy 20 South, combining our Agricultural and Leisure lines. In 1997 we took on the Fendt tractor line. In 2003 we took on a Versatile Tractor contract. In 2009 we built another additional 10,000 sq ft. In 2005 we started selling used industrial equipment. In 2010 we also took on Rogator, Spray Coupe and Challenger. This gives us
an articulating and track, high horse power tractor and a top of the line high clearance sprayer. In 1991 we started the company with 8 employees and now have grown to 32. What sets apart this business from the rest in field: we pride ourselves on our parts and service department. Put in long hours during seeding and harvest. We carry a large variety of parts, and a wide selection of machinery to rent, tractors, combines, loaders, excavators, etc. What is in the future for this company – will things change or stay the same? Progress in: Village of Lake Lenore submitted by Barb Politeski The Village of Lake Lenore is a vibrant community with a rich history and a tremendous spirit. While many small communities are in decline Lake Lenore has remained strong and steady. In the past five years seven single family dwellings have been built or moved into the community. And, to accommodate future growth a nine lot sub-division is being developed on the north edge of the village. Lake Lenore has always had a solid volunteer base and a strong sense of community pride and spirit. This is
evident in the many annual events that take place through the year, such as a net fishing in mid-December when thousands of whitefish are pulled from the frigid waters of Lake Lenore. In January the infamous “fish smoker” draws crowds from far and wide to enjoy smoked fish, good company – and maybe a beer or two. Also in January is the ice fishing derby with great prizes and loads of fun for young and old alike. With summer comes the Lake Lenore “Heatwave”, hosted on the third weekend in July. Mud-bog ATV races, a slow pitch tournament, kids’ activities,
a barbeque supper and a cabaret make the “Heatwave” weekend one of the highlights of the summer season. Many former residents mark their calendars and come home to the “Heatwave” to re-unite with old friends and re-connect with their hometown roots. The Lake Lenore K-12 School is ranked as one of the best schools in the province. For two years running the Lake Lenore school has been named one of the top 5 best schools in Saskatchewan by the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies in their annual AIMS report card on Western Canadian high schools.
Hergott, Seidel and Associates: growing
Their business has expanded, and now their building has, too. Hergott, Seidel and Associates of Humboldt moved into a new building at 231 Main St. in Humboldt last fall, in order to accommodate their steadily growing business. The accounting firm doubled their square footage with the move into the newly-renovated building that formerly housed community health services for the Saskatoon Health Region. The new place has more space for their files, and even a couple of extra offices — something in short supply in their old location. Four staff members have joined their team in the past four years, for a total of 11. “The staff has almost doubled since 2009, when our last addition to our old building was done,” said Dean Hergott, who is a partner in the firm with Kelly Herperger and Mark Seidel. They had planned to add on to the building at their former location again last year, but ran into
The Lake Lenore School also has a very successful athletics program with many district and provincial championships in basketball, soccer and cross country. In addition to the highly acclaimed school, Lake Lenore has many of the core amenities necessary to support a great quality of life, including a licensed daycare, skating rink, community hall, bowling alley, fitness centre, grocery store, Credit Union, greenhouse, hotel, café and many other successful businesses. Once they have a client, that client tends to stay with the firm, even if they move out of Humboldt. Due to the age of the business, they are now dealing with three to four generations of the same families, Seidel smiled. “The longer you’re in business, the more natural growth you get, just from the families,” he said. Service has always been their number one focus, Seidel feels, and is part of the reason why they retain their clients. Another reason could be the atmosphere in their office. Both of their staff in reception have won Courtesy Service Awards from the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce, Hergott revealed. “Our clients feel really comfortable,” Hergott smiled. “We provide a really accessible, comfortable atmosphere.” With their new building, they are now in the position to continue to grow and take on new clients, in yet another natural expansion of the business. “We think Humboldt is going to continue to grow,” said Hergott. “We’re going to grow right along with it.” “The staff we have is ready and capable of handling people’s needs,” said Herperger.

Progress in: Town of Watrous
It was a significant year for the future of health services in Watrous in 2012. In June, after years of hard work and fundraising the Watrous Community Health Complex officially opened. With it, 43 new long term care beds opened to take the place of an aging Manitou Lodge. The new Long Term Care Facility, attached to the existing Watrous Hospital, was the first of 13 new Long Term Care Homes to be opened across the province. The community also welcomed two new full-time physicians to the community, Dr. Latakgomo and Dr. Akhtar. The new physicians and the addition
of a fulltime Nurse Practitioner have resulted in the Emergency Department reopening at Watrous Hospital after a 17 month hiatus on January 15, 2013. The Watrous Co-op began a large expansion to the grocery store and reopened just in time for Christmas. The new addition will nearly double the size of retail space at the store and better serve the growing community and area. Work began on a new residential development on the East side of town near the new hospital complex. Close to 50 new fully serviced lots will be available for sale in Spring of 2013. This development comes after
the current lots on the west side of town have been sold and developed. A new committee was formed to explore the possibility of a Heritage Centre being built in the community. The Watrous Manitou Beach Heritage Centre Board laid crucial groundwork towards the project including developing a new website (watrousheritage. ca), gathering letters of support from local municipal councils and CBC Saskatchewan, completing a feasibility study in partnership with Sage Hill Community Futures . The Town has also allocated a plot of land that could be a future sight of the centre.
Humboldt Home Hardware has been an icon in Humboldt and District for over 25 years. Home Hardware established its roots in Humboldt on the corner of 6th Avenue and 10th street, back in the 80’s. A new store was built in 2001 on Highway 5 East. Today, Humboldt Home Hardware employs 30 full time and part time staff. At Humboldt Home Hardware, customer service is no. 1. Staff are continuously trained to ensure the needs and expectations of their customers are met. They are proud of their staff and proud of their brand. In 2012 Home was ranked sixth on the list of “Top 10 Retail Brands” by Brand Finance, the world’s leading independent brand valuation consultancy. With the purchasing power of more than 1100 Home Hardware stores across Canada, they feel their store will continue to deliver the best price and service to their customers. In 2012, Humboldt Home hardware installed the latest technology in computerized color match system and automatic paint tint technology. Recently they have

broadened their selection of flooring and cabinets, as well as, making improvements to the Garden Centre which will be ready for the spring gardening season. In 2013 they would like to become more involved with the Chamber and keep on top of the needs of the community as it grows into the future. They are proud to have been a part of the Habitat for Humanity construction – providing labour as well as building materials, the Festival of Lights, and a proud sponsor of numerous sporting and non-profit organizations including our local Broncos. Their Charity of choice is the National Ataxia Foundation. Annually they hold a spring and fall barbeque and Christmas Gala with all proceeds going to Ataxia, a neurological disorder that has affected several families in our area. Many thanks for all the support over the years. For all your Building and Renovation needs, come see the staff at Humboldt Home Hardware.
