Carrot River is now Saskatchewan’s Outback By Devan C. Tasa The outback isn’t just in Australia anymore. The Town of Carrot River and the surrounding area want people to know it is Saskatchewan’s Outback. “Why the outback? Because the outback represents the wilderness and we are close to the forest and the Pasquia Hills, said Maggie Doerksen with Carrot River Economic Development. “We feel very strongly that this is a great brand for Carrot River and District.

The new brand, unveiled April 8, replaces Carrot River’s “the secret is out slogan. “Carrot River is changing its brand because of the huge tourism potential that we have here, Doerksen said. “We got so much going on as far as fishing, hunting, quading, snowmobiling, hiking, kayaking down the Carrot River itself. We’ve got golfing out of Pasquia Park. We’ve got the Andy Jamault Trail, which leads to Big Bert fossils.

The brand was developed over a couple of years with the efforts of a volunteer committee in a process that included the use of online surveys. After it was solidified, the economic development office contracted a marketing company to professional design the logo and other materials. For other towns looking at changing their brand, Doerksen has this advice: “Be passionate about it and be willing to invest a lot of time and effort

in getting it right and make sure you come up with something that definitely speaks to your area specifically, she said. “Wherever you are branding, know what you’ve got, find something that’s special about it and put the right key words to it and do what you have to do to promote the best of what you’ve got. The economic development office is also developing a tourism plan that will go with the new brand.

Improvements underway at Tisdale Golf Club By Terri Eger Changes are taking place on the grounds and in the club house at Tisdale Golf Club. The 2015 season is expected to be a great year for the club which invites golfers and nongolfers alike to visit the course. “You don’t just have to be a golfer to come out,” said Scott Janke, the golf club’s president. “We are developing a menu and expanding our offerings to make the club house a great place to visit. There is always a perception that you need to be a golfer to come out and that’s not true. It’s a great restaurant and lounge and it happens to be located on a golf course.” Jennifer Fullerton has been hired as the Food and Beverage Manager for the club house. Admittedly, she doesn’t know a lot about the game of golf itself but when it comes to food she knows her stuff. Originally from Hudson Bay, Fullerton recently returned to the area and managed the curling club lounge this past winter. “She has an extensive background and experience in food management and will be a great asset to the club,” Janke said. Visitors to the course will be able to grab a snack during play or stop for a full meal before or after their game. “We are also setting up a nice lunch menu so people can get in and out and back to work,” Janke said. “There really isn’t a nicer place to have lunch than looking over the

Review Photo/Devan C. Tasa From left, Clubhouse Manager Bill Waugh, Superintendent Marc Anderson, and Food and Beverage Manager Jennifer Fullerton are the new staff working at the Tisdale Golf Club this season. golf course.” The view of the course itself is also undergoing changes this year. The first phase of construction will include a flood management project across the fairways of holes 9, 5 and 6. “These are low lying areas which cause us trouble in the spring and during heavy rains,” Janke said. “We will be fixing that portion of the course which will involve a lot of dirt haul, sod and seeding.” Crews will be working hard to get the job done quickly and get the course back to full play as soon as possible.

“The course will be modified but will still be open during construction with tee off boxes and greens being set up in temporary locations,” he said. While working through and playing around construction can be a bit of a headache, Janke said the course has had a great deal of support from the community for the project. “We have had tremendous support from members of the club, businesses and people in the community,” he said. “We know it’s not ideal but we are working on a long-term fix for the problem. We ask people to have patients as we get through it.”

The course itself is being managed by Superintendent Marc Anderson this year. Anderson is a well-known resident of the community who will get assistance from mechanic Murray Newell, who is returning for the season. When the improvements are complete, the course will be back to a Par 34 with 2,764 yards in length. Grass greens over nine holes make for an enjoyable round of golf and the river running through the course makes for a picturesque setting. Rounding off the team at the course this year will be Bill Waugh, the new Clubhouse Manager. Waugh is an avid golfer from High Level, Alberta who will be in charge of the pro-shop, driving range and taking bookings for the campground. With branded clothing, golf tees and other supplies, the pro-shop will set you up for great play. In the past, the course has opened for May long weekend and if the weather cooperates that will hold true for this year as well. Crews are ready to begin the renovations to the course and will complete the work as quickly as possible, again, depending on the weather. While Mother Nature may not be predictable, the club president is confident that the club is set up for a great year under the new staff. “We have some excellent people in place and I’m really excited about the new structure and the season ahead,” Janke said.

Top 10 RV Driving Tips We get it- driving an RV can seem a bit intimidating at first. But did you know you can drive most RVs with a regular driver’s licence? Also, the RVs of today are very little what you’d imagine your dad driving. They come equipped with back-up and side cameras to help you feel safe and comfortable while you’re on your RV adventures. We asked Dave Sammut from Motorhome Travel for his top ten tips for driving an RV: 1. Seatbelts on! Just like in your car, make sure that all passengers are seated and have their seat belts fastened before you hit the road. 2. Teamwork makes the dream work: Always have someone outside watching for obstacles and trees hitting the roof as you maneuver into or out of a camp site or parking space. If you’re driving alone, you might need to stop and take a look. 3. No tailgating: It takes longer to accelerate and stop in a motorhome, so make sure you keep two vehicle lengths between you and the next car (and that’s the length of your RV, not your Prius back at home!) 4. Ten and two: Make sure to keep both hands on the steering wheel- wind will impact your RV more than a car or SUV, and you’ll want to be ready if a big gust comes. 5. Slow down: Take all turns gradual and make sure that you take wider turns when turning right. 6. Batten down the hatches! You don’t want things rolling around while you’re on the road (it’s both annoying and dan-

gerous). Double check that nothing has been left loose on counter tops or tables when you’re driving your RV and that all counter tops have been secured. 7. Toe the line: When towing, ensure that the vehicle does not exceed the maximum capacity of your motorhome. Your local dealer will be able to tell you the towing ability of your RV. If you must tow your RV ensure that your car’s tow rating is not

exceeded & you have the proper documentation. Talk to a RV dealer for more support. 8. Watch Your Head: Remember: you’re in a much taller vehicle, so those “low bridge” signs now apply to you. Watch out for those, and other overhead obstacles like tree branches and gas station canopies. 9. Don’t be THAT guy You don’t want to be the guy who drives off and takes half the campsite with him! Check all utilities are disconnected before you take off. 10. Under pressure: Inflating your tires to the recommended pressure will help you operate your RV by giving the rubber a better grip on the road. Check your tire pressure at least once a week and ensure all maintenance is up to date. Looking for more helpful RV tips and tricks? Lifejackets Compared to PFDs, lifejackets offer a higher level of protection. Lifejackets come in red, orange or yellow and have SOLAS-grade reflective strips which, along with the bright colour, make you much easier to see in the water. They have a minimum of 30 pounds of flotation, are usually equipped with a whistle, and are designed to turn a person in a face up position. They are reversible and must be Canadian approved as indicated by the attached label. Currently, there are three types of Canadian approved lifejacket types to choose from. Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Lifejacket • SOLAS lifejackets provide the best performance in the water. No matter wh a t , t h e s e lifejackets will turn you on your back in seconds to keep your face out of the water, even if you are unconscious. • SOLAS lifejackets are only available in two sizes; one for individuals over 32kgs or 70lbs, the other size is for individuals less than 32kg or 70lbs.

• SOLAS lifejackets are available in the keyhole model. Standard Type Lifejackets • Standard Type lifejackets have slower performance in the water than SOLAS lifejackets. These lifejackets will turn you on your back to keep your face out of the water, even if you are unconscious, but not as fast as SOLAS lifejackets. • Standard Type lifejackets are available in two sizes; one for individuals over 40kg or 88lbs and one for individuals less than 40kg or 88lbs. • Standard Type lifejackets are available in the keyhole model Small Vessel lifejackets • Small Vessel lifejackets provide the slowest performance in the water. They will turn you on your back to keep your face out of the water, even if you are unconscious, but may do so more slowly than the previous two approved lifejackets.

Traeger wood pellet grills use a natural biomass wood pellet fuel. No fossil fuels of any kind are used in the combustion process. Traeger…the environmentally responsible way to cook outdoors.

Traeger BBQ Pellets are made from 100% recycled hardwood sawdust. Traeger Pellet Grills LLC is a leader in the reduction of wood waste. In partnership with sustainable wood suppliers, Traeger adds economic value to materials that were once considered “waste,” creating new business, products and jobs. This use of sawdust, previously burned or placed in landfills, results in significant economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Traeger wood pellet grills utilize an indirect cooking system that “reduces the fat” and charring, decreasing cancer causing “benzo-a-pyrene” on food. The hardwood smoke created by our wood pellets produces antioxidants similar to vitamin E. Traeger wood pellet grills are a healthier way to cook.

mode PFD’s Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), unlike traditional lifejackets, are more comfortable because they are designed for constant wear. However, they do not g e n e rally offer the same level of protection as lifejackets for staying afloat and turning an unconscious person onto their back so you can breathe. PFDs are available in a wide range of approved types, sizes and colours, so it is important to choose one based on your needs and your boating activity. For example, if you plan to operate your vessel at high speeds, look for a high impact PFD which features three or more chest belts for security. For cold water boating, choosing a PFD with some thermal protection. There is a large selection of PFDs designed and manufactured specifically for most on-water activities such as sailing, kayaking, canoeing, personal watercraft riding, and even for angling. And they all come in a variety of sizes suitable for small children up to large adults. Inflatable Lifejackets Inflatable lifejackets have been designed for wearability. However if you decide that an inflatable best suits your boating needs, it is important that you understand its limitations, how to use it and how

to care for it. An inflatable lifejacket is only approved in an open boat if you are wearing it. If your boat has an enclosure, then you only need to wear the inflatable lifejacket while you’re on deck or in the cockpit. Inflatable vests come in two styles: • The first is a vest type, which can be inflated manually or automatically with a CO2 system. The automatic inflatables are designed to inflate when submerged. They also have a manual inflation system which is activated by pulling a toggle. • The second is a pouch style which can only be manually inflated by pulling a toggle. All inflatable PFDs have an oral inflation tube in case the CO2 inflation system fails. However, for weak swimmers, this might be hard to use when they are trying to keep their head above water. It is important to know that inflatable PFDs are not approved under the following conditions: • Anyone under 16 years old. • Anyone who weighs less than 36.6 kg or 80lbs. • Use on a personal watercraft. • White water paddling activities. When choosing a lifesaving appliance, remember the differences in functionality between lifejackets, PFDs and inflatable PFDs. Pick one that best suits your needs and think carefully before purchasing. Also consider colour when you make your choice. Bright colours are easier to spot in the water. The best lifejacket or PFD is one that you will wear whenever you are on the water. And remember that an emergency is no time to try out a new lifesaving device, so locate your owner’s manual for whatever type of PFD or lifejacket you own, read it carefully and know how to use it before setting out on the water.

RV insurance Like any other vehicle, you’ll need to get insurance for your RV to protect you in case of an accident. However, there is a distinct difference between most insurance policies and RV insurance. This comes from the array of uses, models, and the various liabilities that are specific to RVs. Are you driving a motorhome or are you towing? Do you live in it all year round? What about coverage inside the RV? Or what if someone trips and breaks their leg while visiting your RV? Some RV insurance policies will cover the contents of your RV inside and outside as part of the standard policy coverage. However, you can typically pay an extra premium to cover your personal belongs inside the RV. Plus, here are some of the

specializations your RV insurance could include: Total loss replacement — Applicable to buyers of new RV’s, it replaces the unit with a similar unit, even if the replacement costs more than the original. Replacement cost of personal belongings — RV policies give you the option to specify a limit to include all of your personal belongings destroyed by most events. Fulltimer liability — Offers liability coverage similar to homeowner’s insurance when the RV is parked and is used as a residence. Campsite liability — Similar to fulltimer liability, but designed for short-term vacationers. Emergency expenses — Reimburses expenses

related to living outside the RV while it is being repaired Higher liability limits — Because most RV’s are much larger than cars, they have the potential to cause a significant amount of damage in a mishap. Higher limits provide greater financial protection after an unfortunate incident. Medium duty tow trucks — Covers trucks over one ton when used to tow a trailer or fifth wheel. Suspend collision coverage when in storage — When the RV is in storage, you can suspend portions of the policy that apply only when the RV is moving on the road, such as collision coverage. This is a cost-saving option because you are not paying for unnecessary coverage.

6 important tips to keep eyes safe from the sun (NC) If you’ve ever felt the pain of sunburn on your skin, the feeling of sunburnt eyes is just as uncomfortable. To avoid discomfort and protect the eyes from the long term effects of sun damage, follow these six tips suggested by doctors of optometry: 1. SPF. SPF. SPF. Always wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 25 on your face, and pay special attention to the area around your eyes. 2. Wear sunglasses year-round. More than 90% of ultraviolet rays penetrate through the clouds. Even when it’s overcast, your eyes are heavily exposed to UV rays. Plus, they reflect off of surfaces like snow and water. 3. Channel your inner movie star. Bigger sunglass frames will provide more protection from the rays. Check with a doctor of optometry to make sure the lenses are both UVA and UVB blocking—after all, not all sunglasses are created equal.

4. Wear a wide-brimmed hat. It will cover your face from the sun. 5. Choose UV-blocking contact lenses. In combination with sunglasses and a hat, UV-blocking contact lenses can protect your eyes from up to 90 per cent of UVA rays and 99 per cent of UVB

rays. Ensure that your brand has the appropriate level of protection. 6. Avoid man-made light sources. Tanning lamps or welding sources, for example, emit harmful UV rays. Whether it’s with tinted goggles or simply by closing your eyes, be proactive and protect your eyes from harmful light sources. Rhea Anderson, a doctor of optometry, explains: “Although there can be immediate symptoms from UV damage to your eyes, many long-term effects can start out symptomless, including cataracts, macular degeneration or eyelid cancer. It is important to get your eyes checked regularly and keep an eye out for those harmful rays all year long. More information is available at www.doctorsofoptometry.ca. www.newscanada.com

New or Pre-owned RV? So you’re ready to join the world of RVing? Congratulations! Now the important question: to buy new or used? The biggest advantage to buying a pre-owned RV is price. You’re going to get a lot more bang for your buck if you take this route. However, a new RV will feature the latest and greatest in design,

no one else will have ever lived in your RV and the mileage won’t be racked up. Ask yourself the following questions: How will you use it? When will you use it? Who else will use it? Where will you use it?

If you answered the questions confidently, if you’re a veteran whose found their RV groove, then buying new might be your next step. If this is your first RV purchase or you’re still finding your path, buying used might be your best bet. You’ll be able to get an RV that’s only a couple of years old, with tons of features, at a much more affordable price while you figure out your RV style. Before buying a new or used RV, go through the following checklist: Does It Feel Like Home? Make sure the floor plan fits your lifestyle. Is the bed large enough? Are the kitchen and eating accommodations suitable to your needs? Is there enough closet space? Are the windows where you want them? Can you comfortably use the bathroom? Is the shower stall ideal for singing?

Spend the night You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable making the request. While staying, try out everything. Is it a dream come true? Bring a Friend If you know an experienced RVer, ask them to tag along. Someone who’s been driving an RV for a few years will have some insight into the whole process. Check for leakds If you’re buying used, water leaks are a very common problem. Check to see if the windows, corners, vents and seams have an abundance of sealant around the edges. Excessive sealant is often due to water leaks. Get it inspected Ask a professional to give your RV the once over. Take it to a qualified service RV dealer, they might see problems you’ve over looked.

Five Tips for Telling Truly Terrifying Ghost Stories Come nightfall on every trip, when the stars come out, the nocturnal creatures emerge, and the campfire ignites, the time comes for an RV rite of passage: the ghost story. Whether a veteran RVer or novice camper, you likely have your own roster of scary tales. If not, just make one up. Whether you focus on escaped prisoners with hooks for hands, lovelorn spirits, or abandoned pioneers, a few simple things will make you the star of the ghastly show. Below you will find five tips for telling the best ghost stories: Make it personal No matter who you have gathered around the campfire or snuggled into the RV, your audience will quickly see through the ol’ “friend of a friend” line. To heighten the intensity, tell it in the first person or stay as closely connected as you can. For instance, “my uncle” or “my best friend” works in a pinch

if you don’t think the crowd will believe you were actually there. Tie in your surroundings Like Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects, take a few cues from your surroundings. Use the lake name or nearby terrain to add real-world chills (e.g. “The Legend of Gull Lake,” “…just over the edge of that very hill,” etc.).

Look to the past When it comes to fear, nothing stokes the shivers like an old timey tale. Why? Because of the unknown. The past is inherently unfamiliar and that, in and of itself, should enhance the shudders. As a bonus: stories of remote terror sound much more plausible when uninterrupted by a cell phone

ringtone or impeded by a ubiquitous wireless network. Dial down the gore, amp up the spookiness While you are no doubt a compelling raconteur, the scariest stories depend on your audience’s imagination. Like Steven Spielberg not showing the shark in Jaws or the ill-fated heroes of The Blair Witch Project never

encountering the witch, your story will benefit from a less-is-more approach. You create the atmosphere and outline the plot, but let others fill in the details in their heads. Trust me: their minds will betray them. An accomplice makes a finale grand A first-rate ghost story told by an expert storyteller shouldn’t need more than moonlight and confidence to make a frightening impact. Still, if you can build to a crescendo and end with a bang, feel free. How do you do that? Enlist a pal and implant him or her in the audience. Say your story is about an old fireman who saves a village but perishes – have your friend fire off an air horn unexpectedly. Or, if you don’t have tools, a well-timed yell of a petrifying phrase will hammer home the point. Now that you know all of the basics for a bloodcurdling tale, get out your flashlight, put on your most menacing voice, and get scaring.
