Heading south towards Trestle Junction on the Doghide River Trails, a scenic set of walking trails bordering the Town of Tisdale.
The Doghide River Trails is a set of trails within the town limits of Tisdale. The trails offer many picturesque nature spots along the four or so kilometres of trails that border the town, and cross the river twice. The Doghide River Trails were started in 1993 through the initiative of the town, and they continue to be developed and extended by the Tisdale Wildlife
Federation which has established a wildlife habitat and wetland. The trails are used by people of all ages throughout the year who can appreciate the changing beauty of the Doghide River Valley while they enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, and even cross-country skiing during the winter.

The trail system is incorporated into the wooded area of the Kinsmen MacKay Park and runs along several sections of the riverbank. Leaving from the north end of the trails, at the end of 105th Avenue, take a wander by the Grotto Junction and pass by the St. Therese Junction before arriving at the Riverside Viewpoint, from where you will see the railroad trestle. Cross over the Doghide River via the suspension bridge past Trestle Junction where the trail branches off, giving the walker the choice of continuing on to the playground and Kinsmen MacKay Park, or taking in the wooden footbridge at Doghide Junction. Either way, both trails will eventually lead you to discover the Tisdale Wildlife Federation’s trout pond and wetland project, still a work in progress. If you are visiting in the summer and fall months, take a moment to walk along the boardwalk at Ashley Place to the observation deck, the best vantage point for the pond. A beautiful wooden gazebo overlooks a bend in the river and provides a special place for solitude and communion with nature. During the winter, the trails can be equally as appealing as a place for residents to take their dogs and stretch their legs by taking a walk on the groomed trails. Cross-country skis can be used to navigate on parts of the trail, with the exception of the two bridges. Parking is available off 104th Avenue (north of the golf course), at Kinsmen MacKay Park, and off the Golf and Park roads on the south end of the trail.

Made mobile on snowy fields
by Melanie Jacob, Journal Staff Writer
For people who want to escape to the great outdoors and feel the wind on their face while still being amongst other humans, snowmobiling in Hudson Bay is the answer. “We have about 670 kilometers of groomed trail, the majority of which runs through the provincial forest in all directions,” said Rick Dolezsar, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Town of Hudson Bay and a member of the local snowmobiling club. Many individuals travel to Hudson Bay in order to traverse its wild landscape and see the great outdoors without slogging through several feet of snow and hidden animal feces. Along those trails, the snowmobiling club has set up warm-up shelters for anyone who wants to take a break and cook some hot dogs over a campfire or have a warm drink. “The shelters are usually a 12 by 20 foot insulated building with a wood stove, benches, and an outside fire pit,” said Dolezsar. “There’s also a wood supply and an axe. It’s a gathering spot where people can meet and make new friends.” The snowmobiling club is part of the larger Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association (SSA),
which collects the fees to assist with funding for the various clubs. Those fees usually entail the vehicle’s registration, which goes into a trail fund to help maintain the trails and shelters. The SSA also receives funding from Saskatchewan Lotteries, parks and recreation fees, snowmobile training courses, and their own fundraising. “We’re the umbrella association over all the clubs and the overall management system,” said Chris Brewer, president and CEO of SSA. “We help the other clubs with funding, cover insurance, oversee things for volunteers, and assist with the warm-up shelters. We’re the behind-the-scenes administrative group.” In Hudson Bay, the snowmobiling club initiated the trail system about 25 years ago and visitation has grown steadily since. According to Brewer, that increase in popularity can be attributed to the town’s good marketing and maintenance of their trails. Moreover, the provincial economy is doing well and the population is growing. “Many people are returning to Saskatchewan and a lot of them are younger folks,” said Brewer. “It’s appealing because you can
ride your snowmobile from your back door and away you go.” In Saskatchewan, this ability is enhanced by the wide open spaces and the interconnection of the trail system. According to Brewer, the trails are connected from Hudson Bay all the way down to Melfort. “There’s always good snow there,” said Brewer. “Snowmobiling has become a very big part of tourism.” Brewer said the average age of participants usually range anywhere from 20 to 55. Saskatchewan actually has the highest rate of snowmobiling in the country, but it’s very maledominated. Nevertheless, the rate of females on snowmobiles is also increasing. “Another (club) that’s done well to spread the word is Prairie Women on Snowmobiles. It’s a women snowmobile club that raises awareness and donations for breast cancer,” said Brewer. “I think a lot of it has to do with rural roots. A woman (from the prairies) will often say, ‘you’re dreaming, pal. I’m getting one too.’” Never let it be said that Saskatchewan women don’t have a solid backbone. With this attitude, the interest in snowmo-

biling for both sexes has been steadily growing for the past 10 years. Another part of the appeal might be due to the dual nature of the activity. “You might be in a big group, but you’re still on your own and you still have independence,” said Brewer. In other words, you can still pretend to enjoy spending time with other people while actually avoiding their chatter. Nevertheless, the companionship is there if desired. “Traveling on a snowmobile gives people the opportunity to travel to areas that you can’t
travel to at any other time or get to any other way,” said Brewer. “You can enjoy the fresh air and the camaraderie of friends.” According to Brewer, the average person in Saskatchewan will travel anywhere from three to three and a half hours to go snowmobiling in Hudson Bay. “I think things can only get better, we’ll see some growth and new trail linking up larger centers in the province,” said Brewer. “(Snowmobiles) are going to become more efficient and easier on the environment with the emissions. Things will get better for the average snowmobiler.”

Check out the loppet in La Ronge by braedon clark, Journal Staff Writer
Unlike its provincial neighbour to the west, Saskatchewan isn’t blessed with imposing mountain ranges flowing over with fresh powder, the best of which are a downhill skier’s nirvana. In most of the inhabited parts of the province, nature gave Saskatchewan flat plains interrupted every so often by what could only be called hills
by the most charitable of people. It’s not an environment suited for downhill skiing, so its cross-country cousin has become popular in the province. Cross country skiing originated in the Scandinavian countries of Europe thousands of years ago and was still a practical means of transportation and an aid for hunting as

late as the 19th century. By contrast, the sport is relatively new in North America, having been introduced to the continent in the 1850s by Norwegian and Swedish immigrants. Although it might lack the glamour and speed of downhill skiing, the cross-country variety has become a popular pastime, both as a hobby and as a competitive sport. It first appeared at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, and has been a fixture at the event ever since. The popularity of the sport in this province is evident in La Ronge, a town of about 2,700 people carved out of the boreal forest in northern Saskatchewan and home to the La Ronge Ski Club,

provincial campground. Nut Point consists of about five kilometres of trails and, as an added bonus, the trails are lit at night for anyone who likes to ski under the stars. The La Ronge Ski Club will also be hosting its annual Don Allen Saskaloppet between Feb. 28 and March 2. The first Saskaloppet was held in 1983 and gave 120 skiers only one option — a ski of 50 kilometres. Today the event is more diverse and skiers are given a variety of options, from short and simple to trails that take more than a day to complete. A loppet is a term that originated in Scandinavia to describe a large gathering of skiers. For some a loppet is a competitive event to be

taken very seriously; for others it’s a fun way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. In any case, the Don Allen Saskaloppet is the crown jewel of the La Ronge Ski Club and this year’s event will once again offer skiers the opportunity to test their skills, all while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the area. The event is named in honour of Don Allen, who founded the event and sadly died of a brain tumor less than a year after the first Saskaloppet in 1983. There won’t be any mountains or steep downhill races, but there’s a lot more to skiing than that. If you need proof, make your way to La Ronge in about a months’ time.

Named after Don Allen, the founder of the ski club, one set of trails ranges in length from one to 10 kilometres and can be done in a continuous loop for those skiers looking to test their endurance. There is also a heated shelter at the base of the trail for those bitterly cold days and nights during the winter when being outside for any length of time is dangerous. Muenster Curling Club still rolling after more than 60 years by braedon clark, Journal Staff Writer
Since being introduced to Canada by Scottish immigrants, curling has become one of our nation’s most popular pastimes, and its roots run deep. The Royal Montreal Curling Club, founded in 1807 by curlers who preferred to work indoors rather than on the ice of the St. Lawrence River, is North America’s oldest sports club that is still active. Far away in east-central Saskatchewan is the Muenster Curling Club. While it might not have the famous history of its counterpart in Montreal (the club in Muenster traces its history to 1949), curling has long been an important way for the people of Muenster to have some fun and make it through the long winter months. For the past six decades the Korte family has played an important role in establishing a culture of curling in Muenster. Jim Korte helped build the new curling rink in 1978, while his father Joe and uncle Willy Jonas worked on the original 1949 building that their son and nephew was helping to replace.
“I got started into it because of my family,” Jim Korte said. “My dad and my uncle played and back then there wasn’t as much to do.” Still, there were some downsides to playing at the old rink. “It would get a little drafty at times, and there were even a couple of little holes in the wall,” Korte said with a laugh. “If it was really windy sometimes snow would blow in through the holes.” With the new rink there are less worries about snow and more worries about organization and scheduling for the up to 80 curlers that use the two sheets on a regular basis. Korte used to do a lot of the logistical work, but now, approaching his mid sixties, he’s passed those
Fred Bradshaw, MLA Carrot River Valley
duties on to others. He still plays once a week, often with friends or his wife. When asked who is the better player between them, Korte (smartly) wouldn’t take the bait. “She’s a pretty good player,” he said with a smile. The rink operates on two schedules: before Christmas there are high school, ladies’ and men’s leagues; after Christmas there are mixed leagues and bonspiels, or tournaments. Korte has noticed there are fewer young people coming out to play than in the past, though at times there will be anywhere between 12 and 14 teams of high school students. One of those players is his grandson, who is in Grade 12 and, much like his grandfather, enjoys

getting out on the ice. Another benefit to curling is that you can play it well into your retirement years. In that way, it’s a bit like golf on ice. Also like golf, if you have trouble bending over there’s a solution. In golf it’s club attachments that can pick the balls out of the cup; in curling it’s a stick-like attachment that allows players to push the rock down the ice without having to bend over and slide. Korte demonstrated the technique in the back of Graphic Arts Printing in Humboldt, where he works. Two generations of the Korte family have helped build homes for the Muenster Curling Club. It’s time for someone else to take the reins and, fortunately, that’s been the case. “Someone else will make sure it keeps going,” Korte said. “In fact, it’s already happened.” Anyone interested in getting involved with the Muenster Curling Club is encouraged to contact the club or the village of Muenster for more information.

Snowmobiling Do’s and Don’t’s : the basics by Elodie Adams, Tisdale Recorder Writer

But before heading out onto Saskatchewan’s snowmobile trails, there are a few things all riders should know and do. It involves the legislation, and the national snowmobile course website (snowmobilecourse.com) can help anybody who intends to ride to be sure they know the ropes before they climb onto their snowmobile and hit the powder. Cross-Country Skiing a sport for life by Elodie Adams, Tisdale Recorder Writer One of the advantages of living in a province like Saskatchewan – where there is a lot of flat land and low-lying hills – is that it is excellent for a couple of popular outdoor sports, notably cycling and cross-country skiing. There, hills and mountains present a challenge. Cross-country skiing is a sport for all ages, and considered to be one of the fastest growing winter sports in the country. It develops endurance, agility, muscular response and speed. Ask any cross-country skier and they will tell you it is quite simply the best overall exercise one can undertake. Here in the Melfort, Tisdale and Nipawin area, there are plenty of trails for crosscountry ski amateurs, but not many clubs to join. While it is quite possible to pack your boots, skis and poles in the car and go off for a day with a friend to some of the groomed trails in the area, joining a club has its advantages as well, such as meeting other like-minded people to ski with and knowing when the trails have been groomed. It also helps pay for the groomer and the gas, and there’s an insurance coverage through the Saskatchewan Cross-Country Ski Association. The Melfort Cross-Country Ski Club is the only club in the immediate area that is active and that is trying to grow its club to include younger families with children. The Review attended a ski clinic in Melfort on Jan. 18, and here are some of the things we learned: “The first thing is that it’s a very simple skill to learn,” said the club’s vice-president, Darren Grabill. “My daughter Sadie is four, and she’s been skiing for the past two years. So if you can walk, you can ski. “Another thing about cross-country skiing is that it’s a sport that you can do for life,” continued Grabill, whose opinion was ‘it’s better to be outdoors on a trail than inside
on a treadmill’. The Melfort club was formed in 1986 “to foster and promote the sport (of cross-country skiing) in this area,” and keeps its trails groomed, not only for its club members but for anybody that feels the desire to get out and enjoy the winter because they believe it is just simply one of the best sports around. The club developed and maintains the shelter and the Gronlid Ski Trails, located about ten kilometers northwest of Gronlid and a half an hour from Melfort by car. It is the nearest facility for the club, and provides a variety of trails, some for more skilled skiers and others for novice skiers. They also groom the campgrounds on the outskirts of Melfort and lighting is provided to facilitate night skiing. However, the club members all agree that one of the inconveniences is that there is no shelter for the skiers to warm up in when the deep-freeze temperatures prevail. And one of the best things about winter skiing – be it ˴ downhill or cross-country, is the “apres-ski” cup of hot chocolate and the conviviality of sharing the days exploits with other skiers. For now, however, the Melfort club is thinking ahead. “Right now the biggest thing we are trying to do is to get kids involved,” said Grabill, who says he and his want to start a Jackrabbit program in the club in the future. “We have to take the courses first, and then we’ll be qualified. And by that time our youngest will be old enough to participate in the program as well.” The club also has a number of pairs of skis, spare boots and poles that they will lend out to newcomers who aren’t equipped but who would like to try it out. Members are put on an email list so that they will be kept informed of when the trails have been groomed and of any outings that may be organized.

Wapiti Valley Ski Resort takes adventure downhill
by Kyle Peters, Tisdale Recorder Writer For many years, Wapiti Valley Ski Resort has served as a go-to location for downhill winter sports in Saskatchewan. Over the years, they have hosted esteemed events and acquired some lofty accolades. WVSR started off as a small group of volunteers on a valley side that wanted to provide a down-hill experience to the residents of Saskatchewan. Back in those times, they had fewer hills and only a group of snowmobilers who would take skiers to the top of the hill for their runs. Since then, they have progressed quite a long way, implementing more and more amenities for skiers, snowboarders and winter frolickers alike. The snowmobile brigade turned into a t-bar lift, which required far fewer staff, but was still uncomfortable for some skiers, and later still was replaced with a fully functioning, four-seat chairlift. Now, of course, they have a full team of paid staff and trainers. Their trainers have all received certification in the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance courses required. They offer instruction for all levels from beginner to advanced, in skiing and snowboarding, so that no matter how skilled you are, or aren’t, there is someone there who can lead you in the right direction. Three members of their training crew have even been certified through CADS,
the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing. These trainers are happy to train those with disabilities and give them useful tips on how to maneuver. Of course, the chalet and other amenities at the resort are all accessible as well. Every once in a while, training might not kick in, or enough attention might not be paid, and revelers sometimes hit the powder. Usually, they are well enough to get up and continue their run, but when accidents occur that require assistance, the emergency crews are available. These crews are trained in first aid and respond quickly. They have snowmobiles to ride out and rescue those in distress and bring them back to the safety and warmth of the chalet, where they can be treated if necessary. Everyone on the slope ends up in the chalet at one point or another during the day, and the crew at WVSR strive to make it a pleasurable experience. Inside is a large visitor area with seating, a fully stocked kitchen, and even a licensed lounge. The resort has hosted plenty of competi-

tions and events, including the downhill race and slope style events for the Saskatchewan Winter Games. Many advanced skiers and snowboarders enjoy the use of the different installations they place on the slopes every year, such as rollers and ramps, which can enrich the experience for those who frequent the slope every year. WVSR is very proud of their staff for helping them become one of the top ski resorts in the province. The staff are proud themselves that they have earned such high regard, and happily come back season after season

This endeavour is made easier with the support of their new grooming equipment just received in late 2013, and of course, their crew of motivated employees. Going on the hunt in Hudson Bay by Melanie Jacob, Journal Staff Writer
With so much wildlife and forestry in Hudson Bay, it’s only natural that people would travel from far and wide to go hunting in Saskatchewan’s lush forests. “I go hunting just to get out more than anything else,” said Stan Boe, president of the local Hudson Bay chapter for the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. “I just enjoy seeing what’s in the bush.” People from across Canada and the United States travel to Hudson Bay to partake in its abundance of wildlife and its hunting culture. Although primarily a male-dominated activity, it’s becoming increasingly common to see women shed the skirts and don the rifle as well. “It’s a good mix; more so the male hunters than the female, but we’re starting to see more female hunters,” said Randy Carlson, a Saskatchewan conservation officer out of the Hudson Bay field office. “There are some courses that the wildlife federation puts on, such as Women of the Outdoors, and some hunter education camps that are
girls only.” Despite the increasing number of female hunters, there is some debate whether hunting as an activity is actually on the decline. Whether or not that is due to people’s reluctance to kill Bambi’s sire or Bullwinkle’s brother is unknown. “It’s not as popular now as it used to be,” said Boe. “Now there aren’t as many young hunters as there used to be. I don’t know if it’s the time element, because they’re all into hockey and baseball or because mom and dad didn’t take them out.” According to Carlson, however, the popularity has been the same. It just may not seem that way because of the changes that were made to the regulations. “The hunting seasons are longer. It’s not concentrating so many guys all at once anymore,” said Carlson. “We get all age groups from people in their 80s right down to 12 to 15-year-olds with their parents or guardian.” Much of this interest is generated from the actual activity itself

and not so much the kills people bring home after. For Boe, the best parts were going hunting with people he’s known for years and challenging himself while tracking.
With so many kilometers of provincial forest next to Hudson Bay, it’s no surprise that it has become a popular destination spot for avid hunters. photo by Melanie Jacob
“You have to be nice and quiet and take your time,” he said. “Depending on the distance you cover, you could be right behind them when you pick up their tracks. If you start tracking something, sometimes the best part is the success of bringing it down.” For those individuals not into
hunting as a recreational activity, there is a bit of misconception around it and around its participants. In an extreme example, many might think hunters are gun toting, plaid-shirt-wearing individuals similar to a Gaston caricature. Needless to say, that isn’t usually true. “A lot of people believe that you’re going out just to slaughter something,” said Boe. “I don’t have to shoot something to enjoy myself; I just enjoy being in the bush. I even take a camera with me a lot of times.” The “bush,” Boe mentions, refers to a wide expanse of provincial forests and Crown land that is part of the boreal forest, which stretches across Canada. The government regulates all of the hunting that happens on the land and has very strict regulations. Many of those regulations include specific dates for hunting moose, elk, deer, caribou, black bear, pheasants, partridges, ptarmigans, cranes, ducks, and many other animals. Even the sex of the

animal is specified and whether or not they have antlers. All of the rules and regulations put into place are to protect the populations of the various species from growing too large or declining too much. Moreover, there are regulations to specify what clothing has to be worn and what weapons can or should be used for each species. “For everybody’s safety, everyone is required to wear highly visible clothing,” said Carlson. “Hunters are required to wear red, blaze orange, yellow, or white … (For non-hunters), we recommend they wear some sort of safety colours.” Of course, hunters are always required to take strict care when lining up a shot. They have to be able to see what they’re about to shoot as well as what’s beyond their target. Of course, even lining up a shot is difficult. “You might only hit a target once out of a hundred times,” said Boe. “If they get a breath of you, they’re gone. You hear them, but you don’t see them.”
