Welcome to our Spring issue

Hello and welcome to the Spring Edition of Humelife! While we are hearing lots of news about rising cost of living challenges, more positive news is the record number of job openings across Australia. There is a desperate need for workers, with employers wanting to hear from people keen to work. That includes those who may have been out of work for some time or may not have previous experience. Perhaps you are an older worker or are living with a disability? In short, there has never been a better time to go job hunting.

In response to this opportunity and requests from many of you, Hume is now offering customers assistance to reach their training and employment goals. We have a new Training and Employment team who are here to provide you with a range of supports to connect you to career opportunities, training programs, internships, even help with preparing for job interviews. Whether you are looking for full time, part-time or casual work or are wanting to try to land a job in a new sector – we want to help you achieve your ambitions.

You can read more about training and employment opportunities on page 19. We work with our

customers to support them to take on a job, manage their rental tenancy and enjoy the great advantages of having employment.

Over the last few months growing numbers of customers have chosen to get involved in Hume activities and events. With warmer weather on the way, why not join in?

In this edition of Humelife, we’ve listed a range of activities available through Hume and local community groups.

For those of you who are wanting to spruce up your outdoor space or perhaps start a new hobby, we’ve started the Hume in Bloom Gardening Competition.

Whether you have pots with flowers and herbs on your balcony or a patch of garden to till, all Hume customers are encouraged to get enter our competition and win some great prizes. No matter your location or skill level, it’s a great way to beat rising food costs by growing vegetables and herbs, or perhaps work with your neighbours to plant flowers and shrubs to beautify your garden and community. The competition closes in November, so get digging!

You can read more about Hume in Bloom Competition on page 23.

I wanted to let you know that our male customers now have a great friendship and activity support network open to them. Research shows men are often reluctant to reach out to one other and as a result experience loneliness and isolation. Many also refrain from talking about their challenges and their mental health.

We launched HuMen recently, in response. It is a ground-breaking program designed by men for men. Hume customers can take part in a range of social activities while connecting with other locals. Some of our HuMen members are featured on the cover of this issue of HumeLife. Read more about the program on page 6.

I look forward to seeing some of your Spring Hume in Bloom Garden Competition entries over the coming weeks. Happy gardening.

Take care, Nicola nicola lemon Chief Executive Officer

Being

H M u e n

Studies show that men only go to the doctor after their third major health issue, at which point is often too late.

6

Unfortunately, many men in our communities are also afraid to reach out and talk about their mental health due to social stigma –this is what the HuMen program aims to change.

HuMen was started by the Community Cohesion team as an option for male Hume customers to talk and create genuine connections with other men. The program has been warmly embraced, with many male customers eagerly building new friendships through a range of social activities.

HuMen hosts fun activities at least once a month including bowling, zoo visits, archery, fishing, barbeques, attending sports games, technology workshops, and more. HuMen has also introduced many attendees to local organisations such as Mr Perfect and Men’s Shed Fairfield and Telopea.

The best evidence of success of this program is that many of the HuMen participants continue to talk and meet up outside of Hume’s involvement and have even created a group chat on WhatsApp to make sure they catch up and stay in touch.

The HuMen mantra is “to experience acceptance, value and belonging”, and this couldn’t ring truer for HuMen member Sosok.

All Hume male customers are welcome to join HuMen.

For more information, please contact Sarithya at 0438 095 950. Sosok

Sosok joined HuMen in July 2022 and has enjoyed the outings. The group has been a fantastic introduction for Sosok to take place in social activities and have the chance to meet other men and enjoy conversations and friendship.

He said that when he goes out on HuMen outings, he enjoys the chance for “fresh air and eating and meeting up with other men to chat with them and make new friends.”

Clear home, clear life

karen is a kind-hearted and giving woman who spends her time volunteering at her local vinnies store, assisting neighbours with chores and bills, and socialising with members of her church.

8

Karen’s life has seen many major changes in recent times – just over a year ago, she was living in a large three-bedroom house in Cartwright in Sydney’s West that she and her husband Roy had called home for 34 years.

When Roy’s health began declining rapidly, Roy entered an aged care facility in Hammondville.

What Karen didn’t realise is that she had a mammoth move in front of her.

Not only was the house far too big for them, but husband Roy was also an avid collector of anything and everything.

Karen said: “If he saw things up out of the street that he thought he could use, he’d go and get his car and bring it over to the house.”

Over the years, many large furniture items made their way into their home including four heavy wardrobes, multiple tall bookcases, dressing tables, a large TV unit, and piles of books and VHS tapes.

Karen, overwhelmed with the task ahead, didn’t know where else to turn.

She saw the number for Hume and reached out to ask for help with the clean-up. With Hume’s help, she also commenced the process of finding a home more suitable for her needs.

The Hume team worked to find the best housing option for Karen, and she was delighted to be offered a great one-bedroom apartment in Liverpool, which she happily

When she checked the location of the apartment on Google Maps, only to see it was just down the road from her church and close to transport links to the aged care facility that Roy was staying in – she knew it was the home for her.

Once the home had been decided on, Hume teamed up with Catholic Healthcare, a not-for-profit organisation that provides aged care and community services to assist Karen with the move.

Together they arrived at Karen’s house and decided what furniture she needed for her new home and what could be donated to a charity or disposed of.

Since moving into her new apartment, Karen’s confidence has grown in leaps and bounds.

She recalled the day she showed off her new home: she was walking home from Bible study with church members at dusk, and they asked where her new home was.

She said “See where the light is? That’s my new home.” Her friends gasped and complimented Karen on how new and attractive the apartment was.

The move has also improved Karen’s health mentally and physically. She told us: “I came into Vinnies and one of the other volunteers said: “Karen, you look 100% better than when I saw you a couple of months ago”.”

Karen’s move doesn’t just signify a new home.

“Moving to this place means independence. It’s not just a bed…it’s dignity”, she said.

SPaCe-SavinG Garden ideaS

Spring is the perfect time to start a garden and the size of your outdoor space shouldn’t stop you. With a little creativity and a few clever design tricks to maximise space, there are so many small garden ideas to be inspired by.

• Window boxes filled with flowers can make for a colour burst on windowsills, balconies, and fences

• Hang a canvas over-the-door shoe organiser on a fence or wall and fill the compartments with dirt and wispy ferns or vines

• Just about anything can hold plants if it’s got drainage holes drilled at the bottom – washtubs, old toolboxes, birdbaths, serving trays, and more

• If you have an old shelf, you can turn it into a garden box for herbs

• Attach clay pots to a pallet with nails and cable ties and fill the pots with herbs or flowers for a living art display

• Turn an old wooden ladder into a space-saving stand for flowers, veggies, and herbs with boards on the rungs and a coat of paint

• Lean old louvers (wooden shutter blinds) against an outside wall and fill the slots with hearty plants such as succulents or mosses

If you want to show off your new garden, enter our Hume in Bloom gardening competition! You can see more details on page 23.

Seniors hubs

Hume have started Seniors Hubs in east Maitland, raymond Terrace, and rutherford to create social connections among senior customers.

Running in Hume community rooms, the Hubs offer social support and a range of group activities and classes.

These classes include activities such as Tai Chi, ukulele, gentle exercise, line dancing, aqua fitness, and art. There is also a weekly morning tea, digital device support, games, and other fun group activities.

The Hubs’ philosophy is “by Hume Seniors, for Hume Seniors”. Members are encouraged to participate in the day to day running of The Hub and in time, may choose to share their skills and interests with others by leading a small group activity.

The Hubs began in May 2022 with a grant of $22,500 from the Department of Communities and Justice under the Reducing Seniors Social Isolation program.

In the short time the Hubs have been open, feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.

One customer said: “I love attending the Hub – I’ve made new friends, learnt new skills and now have something to look forward to each week.”
