SCHOOL SUPPORT SERVICES DSN 757-2241 | COMM 05033-57-2241 BUILDING 6400

The School Liaison Program is a Department of the Army Program designed to improve the educational environments and academics of K-12 school-aged Family Members whose parent(s) are assigned to Army Installations and activities. HUMPHREYS HAPPENINGS - FEBRUARY 2019

A MILITARY FAMILY’S GUIDE TO SCHOOL TRANSITIONS CONNECT WITH SCHOOL LIAISONS

School Liaisons at military installations serve as a clearinghouse for information about the schools on and near bases and the services and programs offered in them.

GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD

Follow local school board members in the region where you are moving. Use local newspapers and district websites to become aware of their objectives, student outcomes and performance goals prior to your arrival.

TOP 5 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION MISTAKES 1. ONLY APPLYING FOR PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Most people think of scholarships as something offered by a private organization, but did you know there are federal and school scholarships as well? Don’t count these out! For more information about accelerating, please contact your school’s guidance counselor.

2. APPLYING FOR TOO FEW SCHOLARSHIPS

Getting lots of small scholarships add up. Smaller scholarships are often less competitive, so you have a better chance of winning an award.

3. NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS AND OTHER APPLICATION MISTAKES Always double-check your work, or even better, get someone else to look over your work. A second pair of eyes can help catch careless mistakes.

4. NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO DEADLINES

Missing a deadline is the biggest mistake you can make. Apply before the deadline hits. It really doesn’t pay to procrastinate.

5. LOOKING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ONLY A FEW WEEKS

Start your scholarship search as early as you can, as that means more time to complete applications and earn scholarship awards. For more information, visit StudentScholarshipSearch.com

ORGANIZE SCHOOL RECORDS

Have at least an unofficial copy of your child’s school records as well as report cards.

COMPILE SCHOOL CONTACT INFORMATION

For older students, especially high school students, compile contact information for teachers and coaches at the previous school who might be future references for your child.

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Each curriculum has its own focus, style, and methodology, so becoming familiar with the curriculum that your child has been involved with can prove helpful.

KNOW YOUR CHILD’S INTEREST

Have a list of your child’s extracurricular activities and interest, including sports and levels of participation, volunteer commitments and hobbies.

MONTHLY TRIPS

Where have you been in Korea?

How much do you know about the land of Korea? South Korea is historically divided into five regions: Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gyeongsang and Gangwon. During my internship, this series will highlight places to visit and unique activities available in each region. This final month is all about Jeju-do (Jeju Island)! Editor’s Note: We say goodbye to our intern Jenny and her article series this month as she completes her six month internship with us. We would like to thank Jenny for showing us around Korea, telling us about unique and delicious food and helping us pick fun places to go to learn and enjoy. Thank you, Jenny, for all of your hard work and we wish you all the best in future!

Jeju-do (Jeju Island) O’SULLOC TEA MUSEUM Learn about traditional Korean tea culture, types of teas and admire tea ceramics all while enjoying unique O’solloc teas at O’solluc Tea Museum. In addition, there are many delicious treats such as green tea ice cream and hollabong (tangerine) smoothies. On the second floor of the museum is an observatory, so you can enjoy the wide green tea fields and surrounding landscape. CAMELLIA HILL In the early 2000s, the first generation barista Camellia Hill is an arboretum that has more than 500 species of camellia trees from all over the world. Visitors can tour the nearly 6000 camellia

O’solluc Tea Museum and Plantation trees, and with multiple photo spots, Camellia Hill is also an ideal place to take stunning nature pictures. The best times to visit would be during the spring and fall for camellia blooms, but the arboretum is open year round with its two green houses and other flowers and plants. SEOGWIPO DAILY OLLE MARKET Unlike of Five Days market, this market is open every day! It is part of Course 6 on the Olle-gil (Olle Routes) along with Cheonjiyeon Falls and Jeongbang Falls. Omegi rice cake and Saury kimbap are tasty snacks to try at Seogwipo Market. Other specialty foods that many people try during their visit are “Maengchikkin” and “Dolharubang Bread.” WELL-KNOWN JEJU-DO FOODS > Galchi-jo Rim/Gu-i – 갈치조림/구이 (Braised Cutlassfish) > Heuk Dwei-ji Gu-i – 흑돼지 구이 (Grilled Black Pork) > Gogi Guksu – 고기 국수 (Meat Soup w/Noodles)

Udo Island

Udo is a must-see destination for Jeju Island travel. The only way to get to Udo Island is by ferry and takes about 15 minutes from Seongsan Harbor.

HUMPHREYS HAPPENINGS - FEBRUARY 2019

Udo Sanho Beach (Seobinbaeksa Beach)

NORTH KOREA

SOUTH KOREA

Udo-bong Peak

UDO-BONG PEAK It takes quite a while to walk to Udobong from the ferry terminal, so there are a variety of transportation options such as by bus or through renting an ATV to take to get there. Also known Someori Oleum or Cow’s Head because of its shape, at the top of Udo-bong Peak, you can see the stunning views of Jeju Island.

GEOMMEOLLE BEACH The name of Geommeolle Beach is derived from the dark color of the sands along this small beach. With a total length of about 330 feet (100m), it maybe small, but the breathtaking scenic view of the sunrise from this beach more than makes up for its size. At the end of the beach is Geommeolle Cave, a place where whales were said to have once lived.

WELL-KNOWN PYEONGCHANG FOODS

UDO SANHO BEACH (AKA SEOBINBAEKSA BEACH) Udo Sanho is a must if you’re visiting Udo Island. If Geommeolle Beach is known for its sunrise, then Seobin is known for its sunsets. The beach is not wide, but it is famous for its beautiful colored water, shifting from brilliant hues of turquoise to deep sapphires, and possesses a unique coral sand that it is truly a stunning site. Galchi-jo Rim/Gu-i

> Hanrabong Jusu – 한라봉 주스 (Dekopon Juice) > Galchi Hwei – 갈치회 (Cutlassfish Sashimi) > Ddangkong Aisu Keurim – 땅콩 아이스크림 (Peanut Ice Cream)

Through these six months, I’ve introduced you to various places to travel in each of the different Korean Provinces. I hope that I’ve inspired you to take an adventure! Thank you for reading my articles, and now that you’ve learned about these unique places in Korea, it’s time to plan a trip! HUMPHREYS.ARMYMWR.COM
