Letter from the Editor

Well, it officially feels like summer here in Texas. But with the summer heat, comes the opportunity to spend some time on fun outdoor activities with friends and family. Our family has certainly enjoyed some of those fun times together this summer. Although it seems that summer just began, the cold hard fact is that school will be back within a few short weeks by the time you read this issue. I’m not sure who “they” are but they were spot on when they said time really flies as you get older. I don’t consider myself old (yet) but this has been so true from my experience. Most of our travels this summer have been to bull riding events and we always enjoy seeing some old friends but also enjoy meeting some new ones as we all share a love for this great sport. Speaking of old friends, we were excited to catch up with Kody Lostroh this month. He has been gone from the professional bull riding tour for a couple of years but has been working towards a return. I know many will look forward to being able to watch this fan favorite compete again. We are also excited to introduce you to Darran Robertson who is a professional bull fighter which has made quite a name for himself among the bull riders. Darran has been nominated as the PRCA bullfighter of the year on multiple occasions but prefers to keep a low profile and keep working hard to be the best that he can. We also have some great photos from some exciting events. The ABBI American Heritage was held in Duncan, Oklahoma back in June and over $450,000 was awarded during the futurity. Shorty Gorham also brought American freestyle bullfighting to Gonzales, Texas. If the reaction from the crowds were any indication, I’m sure we will see more of these events in the future.

He is Faithful When we receive the gift of God’s grace, the benefits of His faithfulness is set in stone. Our behavior or degree of faithfulness to God does not change His degree of faithfulness to us. When the redeeming work at the cross was accomplished, the Spirit was made available to all men. Many who are preaching the message of hope are actually subtly doing the opposite in claiming that our behavior dictates our standing with the Father and His faithfulness. He is unchanging and because of what was done at the cross through Jesus, His grace is valid for us. As we realize the greatness of His grace to us, we become more responsible with the great gift of unconditional love and grace. We will become more faithful because we know His love to us and that will overflow into every part of our lives.

If His faithfulness to us has anything to do with our behavior or actions, then we are all without hope. The good news is that because we receive His gift of grace, He is faithful with or without any outside actions. We can’t do anything to increase or decrease His love and His grace toward us. Jesus Loves You!!! Cody Custer

Since the problem is called “growing pains,” it leads many to believe that it has some connection to childhood growth. However, the term is actually a misnomer; growing pains have nothing to do with growth. While a clear cause of growing pains has yet to be established, most health experts believe that it is just soreness that comes from the everyday life of being an active child. The long days of running, jumping and climbing put stress on the body, and this manifests as soreness when the child finally takes the time to relax. For the most part, it does seem that growing pains tend to affect children that are in certain age groups. The children that are most likely to experience growing pains are between the ages of 3-5, and later when the child is between the ages of 8-12.

Since overworked and tired muscles are the main cause, one of the best treatment options is to massage the child’s legs. A gentle massage can work some of the tightness and soreness out of the muscles, and it can also help the child to relax. Ask your child where the pain is and gently rub the area.

Growing pains also tend to have some common symptoms. For most children, they tend to occur in the evening or when they are getting ready to go to bed, and for most children, the pain is gone in the morning. Pain usually occurs in the legs, with the most common complaints being of soreness in the thighs, the back of the knees, and in the calves.

Stretching Just the same as when an adult has sore muscles, stretching can be one of the keys to relieving growing pains, and it can also work to prevent them in the first place. If your child is old enough, you can get them into a routine of stretching at the right times, but if the child is young, you may have to help them.

If your child has issues with growing pains, it can be a trying situation. They can make it hard for them to sleep at night, and you want to do whatever you can to relieve the pain and your child more comfortable. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to soothe the pain. In this article, we are going to look at some of the most effective natural remedies that can help a child with growing pains. Massage With normal growing pains, the pain is usually located in the muscles. Many children lead active lives, and on some days, they put a little more work on their muscles. However, the pain does not set in when they are out playing or even right after they are done. The problem usually starts after they have been home for a while, after the muscles have had time to rest.

If the pain is in the fronts of their thighs, get them to lie down on their back and gently massage the muscle with the tips of your fingers. If it is the back of their calves, have them lie on their stomach and use your hand and fingers to gradually work your way down the calf muscle. For the back of the knees, you can just slide your fingers under the knee and carefully massage the area.

To prevent growing pains, you want your child to stretch at different times throughout the day to keep the muscles loose and ready for activity. If the child is getting ready to go out and play, then you should have them stretch before they start. Explain the

Humps-Horns.com · 10 · August 2017

importance of stretching and how it can be used to prevent the pain that is bothering them later in the day.

heating pad also work well for focusing the heat on the area that is in pain.

If your child is old enough, teach him or her to perform stretching exercises like toe touches, leg raises, and lunges. If your child is young and unable to stretch on their own, you can help the child by assisting with the motions of the stretch. As was mentioned above, a great time for stretches is before physical activity. You may also want to have your child perform some stretches before bed.

If you know that your child has just come home from a very active day, you might suggest that they take a warm bath or shower right after the activity. Options like the hot compress and the heating pad can be especially good for when the pain has already set in, or for right before the child goes to bed.

Topical Remedies When an adult has sore muscles or sore joints, one of the most effective remedies can be to apply a topical pain reliever. In the same way that these products provide you with relief, they can also be great for a child who is suffering from growing pains. There are a number of different products that come in gels, lotions, and ointments, and since you can purchase them over-the-counter, they are especially convenient. Depending on the product, they may include various ingredients that are intended to provide safe and effective relief. As an additional benefit, they can be applied directly to the area, so it is a targeted pain relief solution. If your child’s growing pains are persistent, topical pain relief lotions can be one of the best options for relief. When your child starts complaining about the pain in their muscles, you can just ask them where it hurts and then massage the topical pain relief lotion right into that area. Quality topical pain relievers provide fast relief, making it easier for you and your child to get back to sleep quicker. Before applying any brand of topical reliever on your child, make sure to check the amount of menthol concentration. As an adult, you may like one that causes intense heat, but these products may cause discomfort for children. Also, the FDA warns that topical pain relievers should containing more than 3% menthol concentration, can cause skin irritation and even burns. Real Time Pain Relief keeps the menthol concentrations in each product under 1.5%, delivering a topical pain reliever that is safe for the whole family. Heat Therapy With growing pains being a problem that is primarily associated with sore muscles, heat can be an effective treatment option. When the muscles get tight, heat therapy can soothe the muscles and loosen them up. In addition to that, the heat promotes blood flow to the area, so it can be good for healing damage to the muscles. When it comes to providing your child with heat therapy, you have a wide range of options. You can run them a warm bath. You could let them take a hot shower before they go to bed. A hot compress or

Stay Active While the days of high activity are part of what may cause growing pains, it is important for kids to stay active. Many of the children who have the worst problems with growing pains are those that are infrequently active. If the child is lacking regular exercise, their body will not be ready when they finally have that big day of running around and playing. As a parent, you should encourage your child to get out and play more. With regular activity, their muscles will get used to workload, and it is likely that the growing pains will become less frequent and less severe. If your child can’t get out on some days, consider teaching them how to do some in-home exercises. Of course, there might be times when you want to limit the child’s activity. If the child has a particularly busy day and had growing pains as a result, then you might want to let them rest the next day. Sometimes the body does just need time to rest and heal. Body Mechanics It is natural for a child to want to run and jump and to do all sorts of activities. While it is natural for a child to be active in these ways, it is not always done with the proper body mechanics. Many people have poor body mechanics for the activities that they engage in, and it can be a problem all the way through adulthood. It is not uncommon for a child to have poor body mechanics in the way that they walk, run, jump, or in how they perform any number of other motions. If you notice that your child has a tendency to trip or that their feet roll when they walk, then they might have poor body mechanics, and this could be leading to pain issues. You might also notice issues with slouching. Poor posture can affect the mechanics of the entire body, so you may need to see a doctor about correcting the posture. For children that have an unusual gait, it might be necessary to talk to your doctor about seeing a podiatrist. There could be a problem with the child’s feet that causes them to walk and run in a way that is putting stress on the muscles in their legs. You also want to make sure that your child has good, supportive footwear. If the shoes are not providing enough arch-support or support for the ankles, it can have an impact on the way that they walk or run. With a lack of adequate support from the shoes, it can put other areas of the legs under stress, and this can contribute to

problems with growing pains. Diet Whether you are a child, a full-grown adult or a senior, a proper diet is key to living a healthy life. For children, getting the right nutrition is important for keeping them in good shape, and for helping them to grow into healthy adults. Not only that, but poor nutrition can make a person more sensitive to pain. The first thing is to start by taking steps to provide your child with a balanced diet. Make sure that they are getting enough fruits and vegetables, and that their diet contains all of the nutrients that they need. While there is nothing wrong with allowing your child to have some treats from time to time, you also want to limit the amount of junk food in their diet. Try to control their intake of things like candy, sugary cakes, soda, and processed foods.

It is also believed that certain vitamin deficiencies can contribute to problems with growing pains. Most notably, there have been studies that have indicated that children that have a vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have problems with growing pains. A 2015 study published in the journal Medical Principals and Practice showed that many children who have growing pains also have a vitamin D deficiency and that vitamin D supplements can be an effective remedy for reducing the severity of pain for these children. When your child does go out to play, you also want to make sure that they drink plenty of water. As the body dehydrates, the child’s muscles will be more susceptible to the tightness and soreness that can lead to growing pains. Before your child goes out to play, make sure they drink some water. When your child comes back in, have them drink a glass of water to replenish. As an additional option, you could also consider giving them a low-sugar electrolyte drink when they come back in. When they are outside and sweating, they are losing a lot of these minerals. Low electrolyte levels can cause pain and cramping, so it can be a good step toward preventing the pain that may come later in the night. In His Love,

HE SENT US A TEACHER

Keno

I once read a story that reminded me so much of the way I feel about Jesus the Teacher. Within a larger city, one of the smaller school systems had a program to help children keep up with their school work during stays in the city’s hospital or long periods of convalescence at home. One day a teacher who was assigned to the program received a routine call asking her to visit a particular child. She took the child’s name and room number and talked briefly with the child’s regular class teacher. “We’re studying nouns and adverbs in his class at this time,” the regular teacher said, “and I’d be grateful if you could help him understand them so he doesn’t fall too far behind.” The hospital program teacher went to see the boy that afternoon. No one had mentioned to her, however, that the boy had been badly burned and was in great pain. Upset at the sight of the boy, she stammered as she told him, “I’ve been sent by your school to help you with nouns and adverbs.” When she left, she felt she had not accomplished much that day; and understandably so. But the next day, a nurse asked her. “What did you do to that boy?” For fear she had done something wrong, she began to apologize. “No, no,” said the nurse. “You don’t understand what I’m talking about. We’ve been worried about that little fellow, but ever since your visit yesterday, his whole attitude has changed. He’s fighting back now, responding to treatments; it’s as though he’s decided to live.” Two weeks later, the boy explained that he had completely given up hope until the teacher arrived. Everything changed when he came to a simple realization, expressed this way: “They wouldn’t send a teacher to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, would they?” Many of you reading this may, at this time, feel that life is hopeless and that there is little reason for trying to go on with life. Yet just as

American Freestyle BullfiFighting On July 9, the city of Gonzales, Texas was struck with a full case of bullfight fever. And that fever could only be cured by one thing and it was not more cowbell. The only thing that could cure this fever was the high intensity action of American Freestyle bull fighting. Renowned PBR bullfighter Shorty Gorham brought his company, Lights Out Fighting Bulls, to the city of Gonzales with 15 top names in the sport for a one night extravaganza. Each bull fighter had one fight to impress the judging team to earn a spot and advance to the short round. The short round capped off the night in a monstrous way.

Over the next 30 seconds, young Krepps not only drew every ounce of the fight from his bull but did so while creating a massive charge of energy from the big Gonzales crowd. To cap off his fight, Noah again made an impressive flat foot jump over his bull which was enough to secure a 90 point score and the championship buckle.

Article and photos by Phillip Kitts / Avid Visual Imagery

Notable performances came from Myles Essick from Missouri who put on a high-flying show by wowing the crowd with his ability to stay focused on his fight and weather the storm to finish the round with an impressive 84 point score. In the end, however, it was Noah Krepps who walked away with the high score and the championship. Krepps knew going into his last fight he had to pull out all the stops to put himself in contention for the win. Right out the gate Noah pulled off an impressive flat foot jump (photo on top p. 17) that set the tone for his entire fight.

ABBI’s Annual American Heritage Awards $450,000 to Bucking Bulls American Bucking Bull Inc. (ABBI) paid out $450,000 in prize money to bucking bulls June 9-10 in Duncan, Okla. at their annual American Heritage event which was presented by Cooper Tires. Over one hundred stock contractors participated in what is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year in the bucking bull industry. The 2017 American Heritage marked the 12 year anniversary of the groundbreaking event where contractors are essentially betting on the bloodlines of their animals, since bull calves need to be entered into the program the year they are born. Traditionally held in Oklahoma, American Heritage expanded to include additional East and West coast events in 2015. This trifecta has now paid over $4.5 million dollars to competitors since the original event’s inception. “This year was our biggest American Heritage to date. Our members traveled from coast-to-coast to be in Oklahoma, so we tried to provide them with as many events as possible that they could compete atand win money at- with their young bulls,” stated Executive Director Jay Daugherty. “We have now held two of our three 2017 American Heritage regional events and I’m proud of the success our members have had in Los Lunas (N.M.) and at Duncan. The last event will be in Archdale (N.C) which is always an outstanding event by Jerome and Tiffany Davis at their arena.” The Duncan event , the largest of the three, was held at the Stephens County Expo Arena. There were seven different competitions held over two days for the bucking bulls with the marque event being the American Heritage Futurity which had over 180 entries. “I am so proud of the entire team who works tirelessly to make the American Heritage a success each and every year,” said TwoBulls Group’s Jim McLain, the event’s producer. “This is the third year of holding the event here and the ABBI is committed to bringing this event to Duncan through 2018. The support of the Duncan Convention Visitors Bureau, the Stephens County Commissioners and the City of Duncan have made this fantastic partnership possible.”

The top American Heritage bucking bull was Lolly Pop from Glover, Robertson and D&H whose 91.67 earned him $100,000 for first place. In second with a score of 90 was Cattle Empire’s The Cartel who earned $53,700. Page 16C took third with an 89.83 and earned nearly $31,000 for his owners OK Corralis, Gordon and D&H. Two bulls split the fourth place position, Good Night Robicheaux (6M Ranches) and Marty (Tomlin, Allen, Mills and The Jaynes Gang). The bulls scored 89.5 which was worth $21,440 apiece. Slice of Heaven secured sixth for Duello, Buck Cattle and D&H Cattle with an 89.17 worth $17,2000. In seventh was another D&H bull, Misfire, owned with Bob and Jeri Adams, who scored an 89 to snag a check for over $16,000. Splitting eight were Kilroy from Shuler and D&H, and Page 10-C from Flinn and D&H with scores of 88.67 worth $13,700 each. Splitting tenth with 88.5s for $10,565 apiece were Patterson Cattle Co’s Yippy High Yo and D&H and Exclusive Genetics Free Whiskey. ABBI paid out over $366,000 in prize money to the Top 20 American Heritage Futurity bulls. On Saturday night after the American Heritage Futurity, a Derby was held for 3-year-old bulls. D&H and Buck Cattle took top honors with Money Talks whose 89.83 was worth over $11,000. McCoy Ranches Wileywood Blue was the reserve champion with an 87.67. In third was another D&H and Buck bull, Mind Freak, with an 87.5. Ravenscroft and Vos captured fourth with an 87 for SJR 893. Splitting fifth with a score of 86.3 was Halpain and Thompson’s Striker and Up The Creek Ranch’s How Bout It. Nearly $40,000 was paid out to the top 10 Derby bulls. More than $30,000 was awarded to the youngest bulls in the yearling futurity. Exclusive Genetics’ Read Between the Lines was the top earner with $10,000 for his 87.67 score. Whatapepper from Flying W was second with an 87.5 worth $5,600. In third was Platinum Bull’s 609 with an 87.17 for $3,340. D&H’s Page 50D finished in the fourth place spot with an 87 for $2,390 and Exclusive Genetic’s was fifth with SA609 who earned an 86.83 and just over $2,000. The yearling futurity paid 20 holes.

Bone Shaker from Damien Sanchez was second with an 85.83 and the Ham siblings’ Dale Yeah earned an 85.5 for third.

“ABBI wants to thank everyone who came out and participated and we hope to see many of these same bulls at the World Finals in Las Vegas this fall,” said Daugherty. American Bucking Bull Inc. is the sister organization to Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and is dedicated to promoting bucking bulls, both by preserving their bloodlines and showcasing their athletic abilities. They have over 200,000 DNA registered bucking cattle and pay out an average of $3 million dollars in prize money each season. TOUGHEST SPORT ON DIRT

By Kelly B. Robbins

“I don’t know if I had a choice or didn’t,” reflected professional bullfighter Darran Robertson. “It’s just one of those deals where if you grow up in a family of golfers, you golf. Or if you grow up in a family of hunters, you hunt. I grew up in a family of bull riders and bullfighters, so I rode bulls and fought bulls. My dad, J.R. Robertson, rode bulls as a youngster. He began bullfighting when he was in high school and later transitioned to a rodeo barrel clown. That’s what I grew up around. My brother, Dustin, and I traveled all over with my

dad. I got on my first bull at the age of twelve, entered a rodeo and won first place. I was hooked. It’s in my blood.” “I won the Pro Youth Rodeo Association finals twice,” Darran continued. “Then I went to the North Texas High School Rodeo Association finals three times and I was reserve champion my sophomore and junior years. I qualified once for the high school national finals, but a broken leg kept me from competing at all my

Photo by Ric Anderson senior year. I went to Weatherford College on scholarship and rode bulls. After that I turned professional and rode bulls until I was twenty six years old.” “By then Amber and I were married and we were expecting,” Darran explained. “You really have to rodeo for the love of it, not for the money. If you are one of the top eight or ten guys, you’re making ends meet. But the rest really struggle to stay in the game. I was always ranked about 30 th place, and not making much money. So I decided to retire and get a job.” “After about eight weeks I sat down with my dad and told him I was thinking about fighting bulls because I couldn’t handle this work thing! I then called Lecile Harris, a man whose opinion I value very much. He’s like an uncle to me. They advised me how to get started to become a bullfighter.” Darran knew a lot of folks in the rodeo business, and he was able to get certified as a bullfighter very quickly. “I had pro rodeos lined up to work before I actually had my card,” Darran disclosed. “That first year I did fifteen rodeos. It just worked out for me. I’ve never had to hunt jobs. I’ve been very fortunate to work some of the best rodeos in the country, from Pecos, Texas to Arcadia, Florida. I’ve also been privileged to to be a part of some good schools to help teach our sport to youngsters.” “I owe many thanks to fellow bullfighter Travis Adams of Gary, Texas,” Darren shared. “He is probably the best bullfighter to ever put on cleats and make-up that nobody knows about. I worked with him and he gave me pointers. He helped me to learn how to do it right. He is one of my heroes because he wasn’t political, he just did his job.” “One thing I enjoy about bullfighting is the adrenaline rush factor,” Darran said. “The intense part of the rush, the ‘grab you’ part is very similar to the rush you get riding a bull. I’ll be forty-one years old in December and I’ve been to hundreds of performances. I still get nervous butterflies before each event. They say that when you no longer have those butterflies, it’s time to hang up your pads and cleats.” “Bullfighting is special too, because of the guys that are your

friends, the guys you work with every week,” Darran added. “I’ve been nominated twice as one of the top five bullfighters to go to Vegas and compete for Bullfighter of the Year. I really hang my hat on that, because our peers vote on that. They are the men who see what we do in and out of the arena every day. One of my proudest accomplishments is that I was in the Texas Circuit Finals three times as a bull rider and I worked it three times as a bullfighter. I think I’m the only one to do that.” Darran works out regularly to keep in shape for the rigors of bullfighting. “I average five days a week at the gym doing cardio workouts. I also ride my bike fifteen to twenty miles three times a week. I’ve always been pretty athletic and I played football, baseball and basketball. At forty-one, I’m as in shape as any thirty yearold.” “If we do our job correctly, the conversations in the fan’s cars on the way home are not about the bullfighters,” Darran offered. “We are not even noticed. I’ve worked with some great bullfighters like Travis Adams, Scotty Spencer and Kenny Bergeron. When you work together, it’s like you are doing a dance and you have to make sure you don’t step on each others toes.” “Time and experience help you to mature and refine your skills as a bullfighter,” Darran said. “It’s total reaction when you are bullfighting. If you think, you’re probably too late. You are always trying to be just a fuzz ahead of what’s happening to anticipate what is next. You see what’s fixing to happen before it happens. I’m a better bullfighter at forty than I was at thirty. Not athletically, but I’m way smarter now.”

Peaster, Texas is home to Darran, Amber, twelve year-old Landry and eight year-old Slayte. “Rodeo is starting to take a back seat now to my family,” Darran observed. “My priorities have changed and I’m starting to do fewer rodeos now. I used to do thirty-six rodeos a year and this year I will only do twenty-two. My daughter, Landry, plays volleyball, basketball and golf. My son, Slayte, plays anything that has a ball. He plays football, baseball, basketball, wrestles, and he loves hunting and fishing. I try to be at all my kids sporting events and practices.” When Darran finally retires, he plans to stay active in rodeo at the pro level. “I’ll be an arena director or something,” Darran said. “It’s one of those deals that rodeo is just in my blood. I sure won’t miss the all night drives or late nights at the airport to catch the red eye. But I will miss the camaraderie of working with the other guys every night.” All photos provided courtesy of the Robertson Family.

The Many Sides of Kody Lostroh

By Barbara Pinnella

Humps-Horns.com · 28 · August 2017

62X Showstopper It has been two-and-a-half years since Kody Lostroh last rode on the PBR tour, yet Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine still gets asked about the popular cowboy. People want to know where he is and what he has been doing, so we figured it was time to speak with this fan favorite and find out what he has been up to. Actually, Kody got on his first competition bull after that long lay-off over this Fourth of July. He had been suffering from some physical issues unrelated to bull riding that affected his eyesight, balance, and speech. It took about a year-and-a-half to really determine the cause of the problem and for him to be able to get surgery to alleviate those issues. “In my mind I didn’t know what was wrong with me,” Kody told us, “so every night I went to bed figuring I would get up in the morning and be fixed. For almost two years I had that mind set. So to even be normal again, let alone ride bulls again, was just a huge step. It was always a goal, but now that it’s actually here, it’s almost surreal to me.” “I’m just getting back in the swing of things. I basically had to take those two years off, a forced vacation, as it were. It felt great to get on some bulls again. It had been a long time and I missed competing. There’s nothing else quite like riding bulls and competing against other guys doing the same thing.

“The hardest thing for me right now is mental; to let go of that protection mechanism I’ve used because of both my balance issues and just feeling weird all the time. So laying it all out there again and not trying to protect my balance has been the biggest challenge of getting back riding.” Kody is definitely getting the best of those mental tests. Physically, Lostroh credits Gary Leffew for helping him get back into riding shape. He admitted that after his surgery he would get on a bull here and there, and then get hurt. That happened a couple of times, until he finally realized that he needed to get his riding in order so he could compete. He went to Gary Leffew’s and got on a few. Gary gave him some things to work on and came up with a plan. “I was gonna do these drills on the barrel for three weeks and then get going. Three weeks to the day is when I entered that rodeo. Gary is a very good teacher, and drilling on the barrel every day, as simple as it seems, creates a lot of muscle memory and confidence. For somebody like me who’s been doing it their whole life, you get these little things that get out of whack and need someone to show you where to correct them. It saves a lot of time.” The mental and physical aspects of the game came together as one when Kody reentered competition in July. He won his first event back, and had a strong ride in the first round of his second one.

Kody Lostroh rides Meathook (then owned by Martinez Bucking Bulls) for 89.75 points to tie for the win at the 15/15 Bucking Battle in Sacramento. Photo by Bullstockmedia.com But as much as he loves it, it is very hard to want to go down the road when you have a family at home. That is made even more difficult when you have to travel all over the United States and beyond to earn that paycheck. “Having to split your heart when you need to travel to ride bulls, and yet your whole world is at home with your wife and kids, that is definitely difficult,” Kody said. “I am very impressed with the guys that are able to take their families along with them on the road and keep a happy family, because it’s not easy. There are a lot of miles driven and a lot of sleepless nights, not to mention the commitments that come along once you arrive at the event as well.” If you want to see Lostroh ride again you will have to go to a PRCA event. That is where his career will take him at this stage of his life.

“I am very thankful to the PBR and I definitely have the option to go back there if I want to, but in all honesty I have been doing this for a long time and I’m ready to do something different. There are a few goals that I haven’t completed in my career that involve the PRCA, so I think I’m gonna go do that. “The thing that I really enjoy about the PRCA events,” Lostroh continued, “is that they are managed by individual committees in each city that you go to, so everyone that is putting on these rodeos is committed to putting on a good event, and they are very happy that the contestants are there. They treat them very well. They are quite relaxing, and I really enjoy them.” But Kody does not only ride bucking bulls, he also raises them.

Humps-Horns.com · 30 · August 2017

“I had a couple of bulls and cows here when my wife Candace I first got married about 10 years ago. It was more or less a hobby and just something to do, and then it grew and grew and grew into what I always dreamed of; having our own ranch where we can raise cattle. We chose to raise bucking bulls, so that makes it more interesting as well. “At the present time we run about 60 head of cows, and usually have anywhere between 30 and 40 bulls around depending on the time of year. But I don’t really breed them to have a lot of big bulls to haul around to bull ridings. I like to raise and mess with the younger bulls and sell them at a younger age.” While Kody enjoys having these bulls, the whole idea is to make money doing it. It obviously costs money to feed the bulls and cows, not to mention the babies. If he has too many on the ranch in Colorado he can’t afford to do what he feels necessary to improve his breeding program. “Once I know my young bulls are going to buck well enough to work for somebody, than I’ll go ahead and sell them. Last year a group of us, including my best friend Josh Koschel, started an organization called Buckers Unlimited. It is a bull competition organization similar to the ABBI (American Bucking Bulls, Inc.), and all our events are actually co-sanctioned with the ABBI as well. I have hung on to more bulls so I can compete in that. Otherwise I would have normally sold them to somebody else. “It’s grown. This is our second year and it is bigger than last year. The numbers are up and the prize money has been up, so it’s definitely a good step in the right direction. It was mainly created so that the guys in this area would have a place to go buck their bulls without having to drive to Oklahoma or Texas.” Kody and Josh are always involved in something, sometimes more than one thing at a time. That is the case now, as they are not only with Buckers Unlimited, but they also have a metal fabrication shop they started last year called Champion Design & Fabrication. Kyle

Johnson is also involved in the fabrication shop. Lostroh always has an iron in the fire – pardon the pun. “We specialize in plasma cutting, so essentially what we have is a big plasma table that’s computer run, so we can cut signs, parts, tools; pretty much anything. Your imagination is the limit. It’s been a lot of fun. There is the artistic side of designing signs and cutting them out, and then the more technical side of trying to make a part for someone that they couldn’t find in the store. “We have always enjoyed metal work, and then one day just got the idea, ‘Hey, there is a market for this, so we’ll just go do it!’ The shop is set up at my place and we all work on things.” So, when the curtain finally falls on his bull riding career – and we hope that will be after he reaches all of the goals he sets for himself – what business will Kody look to? The cattle are there, as is the fabrication shop. “I don’t know if I can make a living like I’d want to off of just the cattle, even though that’s what I really enjoy doing. The fabrication business is definitely one that we are looking to expand and make bigger, and make it a deal that provides for our families. I also have some other ideas and ventures in my head that I’d like to pursue when I get done riding – some property and houses, things like that.” Kody is well aware of what can happen when the bull riding world is just one big party while a man is riding, but things come crashing down around him when it becomes necessary to find another career. He has always planned ahead. With his beautiful wife Candace and adorable daughters Sheridan and Odessa, he has three perfect reasons to plan even more. Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine wish Kody and his family all the best in all of their endeavors! All photos provided courtesy of the Lostroh Family.
