Letter from the Editor

It is hard to believe that 2016 is about to come to a close. It always makes me think about all the times a person older than me would say that time really flies when you get old. I feel like it is already moving at a pretty good pace! As the PBR recently concluded their season, we were all treated to a very close race that basically came down to the last bull on Sunday afternoon to determine the world champion. No matter who your favorite rider may be, I think we can all agree that Cooper Davis and Ryan Dirteater are two first class guys and it’s hard not to be happy for their success this year. We can also congratulate the Pages and D&H Cattle Co. for the work they did to take care of SweetPro’s Bruiser and giving him a chance to perform in Vegas and become the World Champion Bucking Bull. We are excited to welcome Cody Custer to the pages of Humps N Horns. Cody will be writing an article entitled “Through My Eyes” and share his thoughts on a variety of topics including tips for aspiring bull riders and things that will help them be more successful in life. Cody was the 1992 World Champion Bull Rider and one of the founders of the PBR. I think it is safe to say, however, that he is most proud to be the husband of Stacey and the father of Aaron, Lacey, and Brett Custer.

We also have a bit of sad news this month as we bid farewell to RIley’s Roundup. Although we will all miss reading his point of view each month, we can understand how life gets more busy as a young man grows up and has other interests and activities at school and so forth. We wish Riley all the best and hopefully will still be able to see him at some of the events with Grandpa. I know some of the larger bull riding associations take a break over the next couple of months but there are a lot regional and local bull riding events all over the country. Take advantage of these great events and help support the communities where they are held. You never know when you may be watching a future world champion. I would like to close by wishing each of you a Merry Christmas. I hope you are able to enjoy some time with your family and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Until next time, Terry

Riley’s Roundup

Hello all, Let me start off by saying I am saddened to hear Valdiron is retiring.... what a great guy, one of the first bull riders Grandpa and I got to know....he will be missed!! Enjoy your retirement my friend. Next man what a great World Finals.....good job Cooper Davis and Ryan Dirteater!!! Best part was the crowd singing the National Athem as one. So glad the election crap is over. I ask grandpa how did Trump win?? His reply “people like me, common folk, came out of the woodwork to take our country back” nuf said!! Oh and by the way my Grandma loved the bull riding!!!! Las Vegas, not so much!! We did get to go out to eat with Emilio Resende, he is my grandpa’s favorite bull rider. Ok ,now I have some news that might upset you or make you happy.... This will be my last article, I just am growing up and don’t follow the PBR like I use too. It is so sad because I have made so many wonderful friends. Sorry, but I have to mention a few, first my RRF group Robin, Megan, Carla, Joe, Shautura, Aubrey and ShayLee. Then my PBR group Shorty, Frank, Valdiron, KC, Emilio, Chase, Chad and Billy Robinson. Then there is my man Flint ( I kept trying to get Flint to have girls call me but it never worked). Attention parents of an aspiring young bull rider.... Giving Jr Bull Riders the chance to “one day” become Real Bull Riders…. Once again the conversation has come up as to what is the best for young bull riders to develop into real bull riders. It’s not going to happen while they are still young teenagers. There are always going to be some kids who stand out against the others in every sport known to mankind but none of them is in the vicinity of being the real deal in the big leagues. Young Bull Riders however, have been expected in many cases to step up and handle bulls that are too much for even grown men at amateur levels of the sport. “How are they going to learn to ride those kind of bulls is the ignorant question that I have been asked a thousand times”. The answer is to let them develop naturally, not to force them to be put in the fire and expect them to handle it without having gone through the process of conquering each level of bull. The quality of the Jr bull riding events are dictated by whatever the quality of the animals is at the finals. What if, and I’m not really asking a question here, the quality of the animals is too high for the kids at the finals. It happens all the time, at national level events. The real issue here is not whether or not the kids have the talent to ride them, It’s can they survive youth rodeo? The ones who think they or their kid is an exception are deceived at the highest level. Has anyone told you that your kid at 13-16 is capable of playing football against college players on steroids? None of us with any intelligence would do that to our kids. Basically, the same thing is being done to these bull riders, and we’ve fallen for it because “my 13 year old is going to be a PBR star”. Here’s some sad news for you, You’re probably wrong. Few will ever make it to the PBR and none who make it there without proper foundation and a body that’s been taken care of will see long term success at that level.

This may be the most important issue that you make a stand about in your sons pursuit of a bull riding career that advances past High School level. The guys that are claiming that your kid must step up to be a bull rider are wrong. Most of them never rode bulls and the ones who did never had any real success at any level past Jr rodeo or high school. The ones who might have ridden bulls never had to face the quality of stock that todays youth is exposed to. If they tell you they did you tell them that I said they are full of crap. This kind bull didn’t exist before now. I rode with many of the greatest riders in the history of bull riding and none of us try to BS anyone about the difference from when we were kids to what they are faced with as youth bull riders today. The future of bull riding is so important to me that I am not afraid to offend a few to educate parents which will be a greater good of the whole sport. If we parents are educated and take a stand against the mentality that is out there in the Jr bull riding circles things will change but if we continue to let it happen it will. Please pass this information on to the leaders of whatever Jr bull riding organizations you are affiliated with and make a stand, for the kids. Cody Custer

discovering how capsaicin work, we know that they are responsible for blocking pain messages to the spinal cord and increasing the inflammatory process (so that you feel better, faster). Capsicum also contains high amounts of vitamin C, which is known to play a major role in dissolving blood clots. This is another area in which capsicum helps increase blood circulation and reduce inflammation. It also helps to clear blocked passages in the blood vessels and keeps the blood flowing free and clear.

12 Natural Ingredients to Relieve Chronic Pain

For those suffering from chronic pain, it’s hard to find relief from medicine that doesn’t make you deal with a long list of side effects. Those who experience conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, sciatica and other degenerative illnesses may find alternative benefits in natural ingredients for treating their painful symptoms. People who experience pain on a day-to-day basis are sometimes willing to try anything and are often searching for ways to treat their condition without causing liver or kidney damage from regularly prescribed painkillers or over-the-counter pain medication. That’s why millions are turning to natural ingredients to fight their pain and live healthy lives. There’s hope for relief with several natural ingredients that can be found in various products and foods. They are known to help relieve the constant feeling of pain and get you back to enjoying life. We have found some of the best natural ingredients that you can find anywhere on the market; they are the most famous for reducing pain and inflammation in the body. These ingredients are safe, effective, natural, inexpensive, and easy to come by. Here we take a look at natural ingredients people with chronic pain are finding to be most helpful in relieving their symptoms. Capsicum Capsicum is a natural ingredient found in peppers and has been used to treat pain for centuries. It contains a compound known as capsaicin. These are perfect for treating various types of inflammatory pain in numerous areas of the body. Although research is still

Glucosamine Glucosamine has several benefits in relieving chronic pain. It is commonly processed from shellfish and is known to lower inflammation and reverse autoimmune reactions. It helps to preserve and promote healthy joints and reduce joint pain and soreness/stiffness. Glucosamine has been working wonders for those suffering from degenerative diseases such as arthritis, easing the pain from deteriorating joints. It is also used as a treatment for intestinal pain, as it fights irritation in the stomach and intestines, and helps repair the lining of the stomach. Glucosamine also helps rebuild the tissues, joints, and other parts of the body that may be damaged by injury or disease, making it an effective treatment for a wide range of pain, including arthritis or a fracture. Glucosamine slows the deterioration of the joints and helps ease pain. Turmeric (Curcumin) Since the 1890s, researchers have discovered the pain-reducing benefits of turmeric, through a substance it contains, which is called curcumin. The most prevailing aspect of curcumin is its ability to control inflammation. Recent studies have discovered that aspirin and ibuprofen are less effective than curcumin when it comes to relieving inflammation. The curcumin found in turmeric is one of the most effective natural treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, and studies show that curcumin naturally activates the opioid system in the brain. The curcumin in turmeric is so helpful in relieving inflammation, the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research suggests that it should be used to treat burns instead of the commonly used opioids. Since it does not have the negative side effects like painkillers do, turmeric/ curcumin seems to be one of the safest and effective choices in fighting inflammation pain. Willow Bark Willow Bark contains Salicin, an ingredient that is similar to aspirin which works to take away the pain. The thing that makes willow bark better than aspirin, however, is that it doesn’t have the same

side-effects as aspirin and other painkillers, like damage to the liver or gastrointestinal problems. Many people find relief from migraines and headaches from consuming willow bark, and it also treats inflammation in the body. Recent studies have shown reduced pain in subjects with lower back pain. Willow bark is often used to naturally treat swelling and other pains from musculoskeletal disorders. Willow bark has also been used for those suffering from menstrual cramps because it regulates prostaglandins and reduces inflammation in the uterine lining. Aloe Vera Aloe Vera can be a good friend to those in chronic pain. Many of us know of its use in skin care, but what it does under the surface is good news for those who experience pain from inflammation. Aloe vera contains a peptide known as Bradykinin. This is an antiinflammatory mediator that helps blood vessels dilate, resulting in lower blood pressure. If you have chronic pain from inflammation, lowering blood pressure can be a big help. The lower amount of pressure means that inflammation is not as intense. This is great for those who suffer from conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, sciatica, tendonitis, and other painful inflammatory disorders. Aloe Vera is also great for coping with emotional stress. Aloe Vera is an adaptogen, which means that it boosts the body’s natural ability to adapt to external changes and resist illness. Those who use Aloe Vera, find that it helps balance system between defense and adaptive mechanisms in our body. This generally helps us cope with stress (physical and emotional) as our bodies experience pain. Emu Oil Emu Oil is not only known for its anti-inflammatory properties but also for the way it penetrates deep into the skin to help painful skin conditions and joint pains. It is commonly used to treat arthritis, injuries, sore muscles, and topical wounds, as well as repair damage to the skin. Research has shown Emu Oil to reduce pain symptoms and swelling within hours after application. Emu oil has the ability to penetrate the skin further than other known substances. This means when it is used in conjunction with other anti-inflammatory ingredients, it can bring those ingredients below the skin’s surface. When applied directly to the skin, Emu oil can reduce the pain of shingles, hemorrhoids, and nerve pain. Emu oil is safe and effective, and its rise in popularity has helped millions of people find relief. Emu Oil can be found in a variety of products and can even be purchased by itself. Arnica Arnica is an all-around pain reducer and a perfect natural ingredient for those experiencing chronic pain. It increases circulation, which speeds up the inflammation process. Whenever we have inflammation from an injury, extra blood flows to the injured area and sometimes this blood can just sit there rather than circulating, causing inflammation. But, Arnica keeps the blood circulating,

which means that it supplies the area with fresh oxygen and nutrients, reducing the amount of pain that inflammation causes. Arnica can also reduce swelling by stimulating white blood cells and processing congested blood so that trapped fluid (a major part of swelling) can be released from damaged areas. Arnica can be consumed in teas, as an edible, or topically applied to the skin in a lotion or cream. Research has shown Arnica to have a strong ability to reduce swelling in joints making it a great natural ingredient for those dealing with rheumatoid arthritis and other types of chronic pain. Ginger The health benefits of ginger seem endless as researchers find new perks from this plant every day. Ginger is most widely known as a natural ingredient that can help fight all types of pain. Ginger is a natural antiinflammatory that speeds up the inflammation process and reduces the amount of pain you feel in the affected area. It soothes sore muscles from physical activity, but also relieves soreness from degenerative diseases like arthritis. It regulates blood circulation and alleviates pain from poor circulation in certain areas. It contains magnesium, zinc, and chromium, all of which are nutrients that improve blood flow throughout the body. Research has also shown the benefits of relieving inflammation for those suffering from Osteoarthritis. In fact, it’s anti-inflammatory powers are so great, it has even been used as a treatment for common toothaches. Menthol Menthol comes from the peppermint and other plants, often synthetically constructed into a waxy, clear solution or ointment. Menthol has been used to treat a variety of painful symptoms for many centuries and still continues to prove beneficial today. It is commonly used to alleviate the pain from migraines and everyday headaches. It is a well-known anti-inflammatory, and when applied topically, can reduce pain caused by inflammation. Many people apply menthol to the temple for headaches, sore joints, or tense muscles. Even just the aroma of menthol reduces nausea. Ingesting menthol can also sooth digestion pains and cramping. It relieves sore muscles and joints and reduces stiffness in various areas of the body. The pleasant aroma of menthol also promotes relaxation and can reduce the stress you feel from dealing with chronic pain. Chondroitin Chondroitin is already found in the cartilage of our bodies. Taking supplements of chondroitin can help ease chronic pain in joints and areas in between the bones. The chondroitin in our body helps cushion the joints and absorbs water to keep our cartilage healthy.

Humps-Horns.com · 11 · December 2016

Taking supplements of chondroitin can help ease pain caused by cartilage damage from certain diseases like arthritis. Chondroitin eases inflammation in the joints by building up and restoring damaged cartilage and has no known side-effects. Chondroitin is popularly used in topical analgesics and other products designed to reduce inflammation and pain. Most often those suffering from osteoarthritis or arthritis may take a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin, but recent studies have shown chondroitin to be powerful enough on its own.

Anthocyanins (Tart Cherries) The anthocyanins found in tart cherries are the most antiinflammatory substance you can find in any fruit or vegetable. Research has shown that tart cherries contain the highest antiinflammatory content of any food. Tart cherries also contain high amounts of Polyphenols (micronutrients that help prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases), and they are high in antioxidants. As far as relieving pain, tart cherries are famous for reducing pain for osteoarthritis patients. This capability can also transfer into other areas of joint and muscle pain, which can help reduce or speed up painful inflammation. It sure beats the negative side-effects from acetaminophen and other painkillers, like damage to the liver and kidneys. Witch Hazel Witch Hazel is commonly applied topically for typical bruises, sprains, and joints. It is even used for those experiencing chronic pain in joints, muscles, and the skin. It soothes the muscles and inflamed areas of the body and provides a calm, soothing feeling. It is a perfect antibacterial for skin conditions, either chronic ones or temporary ones like insect bites or minor scrapes. This is great for sunburns and other skin issues. It also nourishes and keeps the skin healthy, working as an astringent and cleansing the pores. It can relieve razor burn and diaper rash, and is a perfect treatment for any painful skin conditions. A Little Golden “Rule” I once read a story that happened many years ago. It would seem that there were two boys working their way through Stanford University, and their funds had gotten desperately low. All at once, a great idea came to them. They would engage someone for a piano recital. They would use the funds to help pay, room and board and also their tuition. The pianist’s manager asked for a guarantee of $2,000. Of course this guarantee was a lot of money in those days, but the boys agreed and proceeded to promote the concert. They worked hard, only to find that they had grossed $1,600.00 when it was all said and done. After the concert the two boys told the artist the bad news. They gave him the entire $1,600.00 along with a promissory note for $400.00, explaining they would earn the amount still owed at the earliest possible moment and send it to him. It appeared that the end of their college days was upon them. “No, boys,” replied the artist, “that won’t do.” Tearing the note in pieces, he returned the money to them. The boys were stunned as he continued. “No,” he told them as he handed them the $1,600.00. “Take out all your expenses and keep for each of you 10 percent of the balance for your hard work. Let me have the rest. The years passed by and WWI came and went. This artist, now the premier of Poland, was striving to feed thousands of starving people in his native land. There was only one man that might be able to help, his name was Herbert Hoover. Mr. Hoover was in charge of the U. S. Food and Relief Bureau. He responded and soon thousands of tons of food were sent to Poland, and after the starving people were fed, the premier of Poland journeyed to Paris to thank Mr. Hoover himself for the relief sent to his people. “That’s alright, Mr. Paderewski,” was Hoover’s reply. “You probably don’t remember me, but you helped me once when I was a student at college and in trouble.” Jesus puts the moral of this story this way, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them...” (Matthew 7:12) We know this saying best as “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” or the Golden Rule.

UBBI National Finals D&H Cattle’s Big Sky Wins Big at UBBI National Finals This year’s 2016 UBBI National Finals attracted 191 different two, three and 4 year old bulls to compete for over $357,000 in prize money! The best 50 two year old bulls in the UBBI gathered in Ada, Oklahoma to see who would ultimately win the UBBI Futurity World Championship and Finals Championship! At the completion of the Futurity on Friday morning it was obvious that bull #406 Big Sky from D&H Cattle Company was prepared for the “Big Show”! Big Sky produced an 89.25 point score to win the event and the UBBI Finals Championship and that came with a first place check of $10,000. Together with his regular season earnings of $4481, Big Sky earned a total of $14,481 to also win the 2016 UBBI Futurity World Championship. Each year the UBBI presents a $5,000 bonus to both the Finals Champion and World Champion in each class (Futurity, Derby, Classic). So add it up. . . .$14,481 in regular season and finals earnings, a $5000 Finals Champion bonus and a $5000 World Champion bonus! All total ~ $24,481! Together with Big Sky’s Gold Standard Futurity and Silver Select earnings, the D&H Cattle dynamo banked a total of $38,800 in UBBI cash! UBBI Futurity note: The highest earning UBBI Futurity bull this season was #423 War Cloud with $43,429 in total earnings, including regular season, finals and Gold Standard Futurity money!

Jason & Amy Mogg, together with the Jaynes Gang put together a really solid team that posted scores of 86.5 (Just Kidding), 86.75 (Go Blue) and 88 points (Buffalo Scott), for a total of 261.25 points and edged out the second place team by only .25 point! The win came with a check for $41,750! In second place was the team from D&H Cattle Team #2 with Nasty Habit (86.5), Olaf (86.75) and Budakon (87.75), picking up a check for $19,147! All Star Ranch’s team finished in third place with 258.25 points followed by a tie for 4th/5th place with Cord & Sara McCoy/Joe & Nina Webb and D&H Cattle Team #1. Both teams posted total scores of 256.5 points. Biker Bob Rides Into the #1 Spot Everyone involved in the bucking bull industry understands things can change in an instant. You can go from first to last in one jump, or you can move from the top 10 to 1st place in two performances! That was the case with Scott Cattle Company’s bull #323 Biker Bob! JR Scott’s big-horned, red bull entered the UBBI National Finals in 7th place. But after a first place finish in the first round and third place finish in the second round, Biker Bob placed second in the aggregate to earn a total of $9000 at this year’s UBBI National Finals,

United Futurity League Concludes It’s 2016 Season The United Bucking Bulls, Inc created the United Futurity League in 2015 and has now concluded it’s second consecutive season with the completion of the 2016 UBBI National Finals and UFL Team Finals event in Ada, Oklahoma! This year 40 different UFL franchises used 211 different bulls during 6 regular season UFL events. Twenty-five teams participated at this year’s UFL Team Finals and the event paid out $125,000 to the top 10 UFL Team owners. “It was a very tough team competition this year at the finals,” stated Randy Schmutz, general manager of the UBBI. “There were 75 bulls in the team competition and 34 of the top 50 UBBI National Finals Futurity bulls were also entered into the UFL Team Finals! That makes for a really tough set of bulls!”

Locke & Loaded Wins Big at UBBI National Finals It’s been said that patience is a virtue! To have patience in the bucking bull industry is indeed a quality and at times patience does pay off! Gary and Nedra Keel, have been waiting for this moment for a long time and it almost didn’t happen. “We bought the bull from Johnny and David Locke as a two year old and partnered with Kyle Walgren,” explained Gary Keel. “We entered him in the UBBI Gold Standard Futurity that year and split 4th and 5th place with him, but he got hurt there and had a severe hip injury!” Keel was not optimistic that he would recover and Walgren agreed to let him keep the bull to breed with and move on. During his three year old year, Locke & Loaded was bucked a limited amount of times and showed promise. But in 2016, Keel put the bull on the road and the rest is history!

to catapult to the UBBI Derby World Championship title! “It’s always exciting to see these bulls peak at the absolute right time,” explained Randy Schmutz, general manager of the UBBI. “Biker Bob has always been a bull that shows up and wins money! But he definitely did it at the right time and at the right place!” Biker Bob posted an 89 point score in the first round to earn $1000 for the go-round win! Tom & Peggy’s bull #JF310 Power Plant placed second with 88.5 points and in third place was Cody Ohl’s bull #761 Bushwacked, with a score of 88.25 points. The top 25 Derby bulls after the first round performed again on Saturday to determine the UBBI Derby National Finals Champion and ultimately the UBBI Derby World Champion. Bull #20A High Test from D&H Cattle had a stellar performance on Saturday with an 89.5 point outing and together with his first round score of 87.75 points, had a total of 177.25 points to win the UBBI Finals Championship and a total of $11,000 in qualifier dollars. High Test also received the UBBI National Finals Championship bonus of $5000.

Bull #212 Locke & Loaded earned $4025 in regular UBBI season earnings to enter the UBBI National Finals in the 8th position $4094 behind the leader, bull #Z26 Acting Crazy from Martinez Bucking Bulls. In the first round, Locke & Loaded performed well and posted a score of 87 points to finish 7th on Friday night. But it was his Saturday night performance that sealed the deal. With the highest marked bull score of the entire finals, Locke & Loaded put up a score of 90 points, for a total of 177 points to place 2nd in the aggregate and earn $8500 in Finals cash! That moved Locke & Loaded to the #1 spot in the UBBI Classic standings, with a total of $12,525 and $925 ahead of D&H Cattle/Flinn’s Sketchy Bob and $1406 ahead of Martinez Bucking Bulls’ Acting Crazy! Locke & Loaded became the 2016 UBBI Classic World Champion. “I’m glad the bull did well,” shared Gary Keel. “My wife Nedra was getting a little frustrated. But now she’s more excited about the win maybe more than I am. And I wanna thank Mike Weston for all of his help with the bull too!” The first round of Classic bull competition saw bull #Z8-8 Losing My Religion from Dennis Owens/Sam Wyatt winning the round with a score of 89.75 points, followed by Sketchy Bob with a score of 89.25

But in the end it was Biker Bob, who finished 3rd in the championship round, posting a score of 88 points, together with his first round score of 89 points, totaled 177 points to finish second place in the aggregate and earned $9000 in Finals earnings. Power Plant from Tom & Peggy finished 6th in the championship round, third in the aggregate and was the Reserve World Champion Derby Bull. “It was a really tight finish for the Derby World Title this season,” Schmutz explained. “In the end, with finals earnings, Biker Bob won a total of $14,213 just ahead of Tom & Peggy’s Power Plant with $13,466! That’s only a difference of $747!” Biker Bob had $5213 in regular season earnings, $9000 in Finals earnings to total $14,213 in qualifier dollars to win the world championship, plus a $5000 world champion bonus and $1825 in Black Gold Derby money for a total UBBI haul of $21,038! Cannon Cravens Rank Bull Rider Tour Champion - 2016

For the third consecutive year in a row, a teenager has burst onto the bull riding scene and won the Rank Bull Rider Tour (RBRT) Championship. In 2014 it was Brody Yeary from Brock, Texas. Last season it was Koal Livingston from Burleson, Texas! This year, 16 year old Cannon Cravens from Porum, Oklahoma, rode more bulls for 8 seconds and posted more qualified ride scores and won more money than any other contestant to win the 2016 Rank Bull Rider Tour Championship. “We’ve enjoyed these young talented bull riders competing at our events and watching them be successful,” stated Randy Schmutz, general manager of the Rank Bull Rider Tour. Cravens started the 2016 RBRT season in Mineral Wells, Texas in January and competed on Friday and Saturday, winning the Saturday performance and his first of seven event buckles. His first win came with a check for $1281. In fact, Cravens competed at 9 RBRT regular season events and rode in 15 performances and won almost 50% of them. Cravens entered the 2016 Rank Bull Rider Tour Finals in the number one position with $6813 in cash and 2127 points. Ezekiel Mitchell was in second place with $3881 and Cravens’ closest threat in the points race was JT Moore with 666.75 points.

Cravens started the Finals on the right foot placing 4th in the first round with a score of 81 points on Larry McFarlin’s bull #373 Okie Train. He followed up with another fourth place finish and a qualified ride in the second round on bull #262 Jailhouse Jr, scoring 83 points. The third and final round of the event featured the best 25 Derby bulls and the best 25 Classic bulls from the UBBI. Cravens drew High View Cattle Company’s bull #212 Locke & Loaded. The bull turned in a 90 point bull score, the highest marked bull of the weekend. Cravens rode Locke & Loaded for 3.95 seconds and earned a 93.95 Rank Rider score that placed Cravens in the number 3 spot for the go-round and earned him $975. Ultimately Cannon Cravens rode 2 of 3 bulls for 164 points and finished 2nd in the average earning him $1500. Together with his go-round earnings, Cravens earned a total of $4035 in Finals cash. Cravens also finished the season with 2455 points and a $5000 High Point bonus for a total haul of $15,848 to win the 2016 Rank Bull Rider Tour Championship! Cannon Cravens also received a certificate for $5000 toward the purchase of a 2017 Capri Camper!

By Kelly B. Robbins Consistency is what landed five year-old SweetPro’s Bruiser in the elite group of nine bovine finalists for the 2016 PBR Built Ford Tough Series World Champion Bull title. Consistency is what kept him in the game during the 2016 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas at the new T-Mobile Arena. Consistency is what finally won him the title of 2016 PBR BFTS World Champion Bull, the 16 th different World Champion Bull in PBR history. The atmosphere in the T-Mobile arena was electric as fans waited in anticipation as the last bull in the last out battled the last cowboy to determine which was the best bovine athlete and would earn the crown of 2016 PBR World Champion Bull. When the dust finally settled, there was a three-way tie for World Champion Bull between SweetPro’s Bruiser, SweetPro’s Long John, and Pearl Harbor. Each had scored a total of 90.75 points for their two Final’s outs.

Consistency is what propelled SweetPro’s Bruiser to number one in the standings just before the Finals with an average score of 45.94 points. Because he had the highest regular-season aggregate score of his best eight outs, he won the tie-breaker clinching the 2016 PBR BFTS World Champion Bull title. “Bruiser’s consistency sets him apart from other bulls,” observed owner H.D. Page of D&H Cattle Company. “I don’t think there has ever been a better bull in PBR history than Bruiser. I don’t think he’s the rankest bull in the arena, but I don’t think there has ever been one better.” “Bruiser is the most polished of the World Champion Bull contenders,” Slade Long said in his Morning Line column before Round 2 of the PBR World Finals. “He always has a great trip and always brings home a good score. He is honest and rideable, but he’s far from easy.” SweetPro’s Bruiser bucks off Wallace Vieira de Oliveira at 5.25 seconds in Tulsa, OK. Photo by Avid Visual Imagery

“Bruiser is always 100% and he gives 100% every time,” offered PBR Director of Livestock and CBS Sports commentator Cody Lambert on Thursday’s Round 2 Inside the PBR World Final’s pre-show. “He’s got the ability to jump high, kick hard, spin fast, go one way then back the other. He does the same thing every time. His timing is perfect. He’s a really, really rank bull that should be smooth to ride.” J.W. Hart, stock contractor and commentator for CBS Sports hit the nail square on the head during the Thursday PBR World Final’s pre-show. “Air Time, I believe, is the rankest bull we have in the world. But I believe Bruiser is the most consistent. Come Sunday afternoon, consistency will reign supreme.” SweetPro’s Bruiser is one of three 2016 World Champion Bull finalists owned by Dillon and H.D. Page and partners. Last year’s World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Long John was in the hunt, as was Stone Sober. Gene Owens and partners also had three bulls contending for the championship with Seven Dust, Cochise and Hey Jack. Chad Berger and partners had Crossfire and Pearl Harbor, and Jared Allen and partners had Air Time. For his first out, SweetPro’s Bruiser was up against Mason Lowe in Thursday’s Round 2. Bruiser bested Lowe in 5.66 seconds, but had a disappointing score of just 44.5 points. This was the third battle between these two. Mason scored 91 points on Bruiser back in January in Oklahoma City. But Bruiser out-dueled Mason in October in Nampa, Idaho. Lowe lost his seat at 2.56 seconds and

Bruiser got a monster score of 46.75 points! Bruiser faced off against the reigning Brazilian Champion Dener Barbosa in the World Final’s championship round on Sunday. Barbosa held on until Bruiser made the move to send Barbosa flying off his back at 7.15 seconds. This earned Bruiser a score of 46.25 points and landed him in the three-way tie for the lead. “No matter how good these bulls are, they are all subject to the conditions around them,” H.D. said. “You don’t really know what to expect. Having the right bull rider on his back will definitely make a difference. It really helps when you have top riders riding them. They just seem to bring out the best in these bulls.” It was questionable whether Bruiser was even going to be able to buck in the Finals when H.D. discovered his hocks were swollen as he was unloading him into his pen in Las Vegas. “It’s 1,280 miles from my ranch in Oklahoma to Vegas. When we arrived, Bruiser’s feet were swollen from his hooves to his hocks. Mesa (H.D.’s girlfriend, Mesa Pate), Mike Hadley and I put some poultice mud packs on his hocks three times a day to try to draw out the inflammation. His disposition is amazing. He’s more like a family pet than a world champion bucking bull. He just stood there and let us crawl over and under him to change the poultice packs. He was back to normal in about three days.” According to Probullstats.com, Bruiser ends the 2016 season with an 86.89% buck off percentage, a 91.6 average rider score, 30 round

bulls. Mossy Oak Mudslinger won the title in 2006. SweetPro’s Long John won the title last year and SweetPro’s Bruiser just won the 2016 title. Nine time World Champion and CBS Sports commentator Ty Murray summed it all up on Thursday’s CBS Sports World Final’s broadcast, right after Bruiser dispatched Mason Lowe in Round 2. “This (Bruiser) has been a very rank, reliable bull and the guys know what he’s going to do, but he does it so well every time that you’ve got to be right on the money to keep up. This gets dangerous right here as you see him whip Mason Lowe forward so hard, right as he’s changing direction. I’ll tell you what, that bull’s breeding stock is going to go way up, because when you see one that is that big, that strong, that athletic, and that reliable, they’re going to be wanting to breed him for sure.”

winning outs and 8 rider round wins. “If you are a world class bull rider, that’s the bull you want every time,” two-time PBR World Champion and CBS Sports commentator Justin McBride shared. “Because if you do your part, you’re going to be well over 90 points.” Consistency is the key ingredient that sets D&H Cattle Company apart from the other stock contractors. H.D. and Dillon Page have consistently bred and raised amazing bovine athletes who become battle hardened and tested champion bucking bulls. From ABBI Futurity and Classic champions, to their three PBR World Champion

“We’ll take a deep breath for a day or two,” H.D. shared. “Then it’s back to the grind. It feels good. It’s a goal that you set for yourself. It’s been my goal since I started raising bucking bulls. It’s pretty fulfilling, especially since we bred and raised the bulls. It’s a pretty good deal how it all comes full circle. I’m really proud of our bulls.”

Ryan Dirteater Photos by Phillip Kitts / Avid Visual Imagery

By Barbara Pinnella Ryan Dirteater certainly made a statement at this years’ PBR Finals. He won the event average by riding six of his six bulls – none of which were in any way easy. The buckle had not been put on his belt yet, only because it was displayed in front of him as he addressed the media after his big victory. “I’m gonna put that event buckle on as soon as I get back to the locker room,” he said. “It’s a special buckle to me, so I’m putting it on. I will wear this one until I win a bigger one! “This is a great spot to be in. I probably had to mature; it took me a little longer to get here than Cooper. He won the Finals last year and the World title this year. He’s a great bull rider and a great guy. “I got sick the earlier in the week,” he continued, “so I had to make sure I got a lot of rest to feel good the next day. Before I got here I said I wanted to come and ride in each round. I rode all my bulls, and here is sure a good place to do it! It’s a great accomplishment.” To accompany that buckle is the nice check that Ryan received; a career-high $317,916.67 to be exact. Those winnings put him over the $1 million mark in earnings since becoming a professional bull rider, and that money will go to good use. “I have a place, so I’ll be paying off my ranch off and get some equipment. I’ll also invest some of it. Bull riders’ careers don’t last forever. I want to be smart about it and set myself up for the next chapter in my life. God has a plan for me.” Since his debut in the BFTS in 2008, Dirteater has captured the

hearts of PBR fans across the country. Known as The Cherokee Kid, Ryan has had many other big wins, but along with that has also suffered some very serious injuries. Many of those have put him on the shelf for a long time. Back in 2009 he got hung up. By the time he was able to get free, he had a dislocated knee cap and a torn ACL, MCL, and PCL. He has also suffered a broken femur, torn triceps, lacerated lung, and broken jaw, never mind the ‘normal’ bumps and bruises of a bull rider. Between injuries and rehab he has missed too many months of competition to count. And yet, here he was, back again and riding like the star he is. “My drive comes from the fact that I love the sport of bull riding,” he told us. “When I’m injured, sitting at home watching my buddies on TV, it just makes me want to be there. It makes me want to put in that extra effort to do anything I could to be back. “I felt good going into the Finals, and I was in pretty good shape. I mean, I have my problems, but for a bull rider I was in good shape going into the PBR Finals.” Obviously, good enough to ride all six of his bulls. While that is the goal of all bull riders, when it actually happens it might come as a bit of a shock. “Was I surprised? Oh yeah, I’m always surprised when I ride ‘em all! Going into the Finals, it was my eighth time qualifying for the PBR Finals, and I felt ready. I knew what Vegas was gonna be about, I knew the cameras were gonna be there and everybody’s gonna want to talk to you. “I just tried to stay focused and stay rested, and I felt ready to go. If I can do that all season long, the sky’s the limit.” Here is who Ryan had to conquer to get those all-important six rides; High Test (D&H Cattle Co.) 86.75; Billy Bat Skat (Rocking I Rodeo/Lazy K4 Oaks Arena Bucking Bulls) 86; Jack Daniels After Party (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) 87; Swashbuckler (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) 86.50; Minion Stewart (Skori Bucking Bulls) 87.26 and finally to win the Championship Round, Brutus (D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co/Bob & Jeri Adams) 89.75. Dirteater had paired up with Jack Daniels After Party several times before, and gotten the whistle on him. They have a good history – six

Dirteater rides Brutus for 89.75 points and the win in the championship round at the PBR World FInals. tries for Ryan with five rides. Still, that was not his favorite ride of the week. “The ride on Brutus was definitely my favorite. It was the best one, it was the last one, and because I had to stay on him to win the Finals. I knew that, when Guilherme rode his short-round bull. My destiny was in my hands. “I turned around and looked at Dad, Dallas Schott, Zane Cook, and Brady Sims. They helped me all week; every time I climbed on a bull, they were there with me. I said, ‘It’s my time. Here we go!’ After that whistle blew I threw my hat, whooped and hollered – it was an incredible feeling.” Having watched Ryan grow up in the PBR, it still seems odd to hear him referred to as a veteran at 27 years of age. “Yeah, it sounds funny to me too,” he said. “Seems like yesterday I was the rookie and now I’m not. I’ve been around for nine years. It’s pretty crazy.” This was the first year that the PBR Finals found a new home at the T-Mobile Arena, and because of that, Ryan also set records. “That means a lot to me, it’s in the history books. To be the first event winner at T-Mobile and one of three men to stay on all your bulls at the Finals – the others are Silvano Alves and J.B. Mauney – and they’re World champions; that’s great! The only thing better than this is that World title buckle.”

The way the chutes came out from the corners of the arena confused some of the bulls to start, so we asked Ryan if it was any different from a riders’ point of view. “Well, it took a couple of nights to get used to it, but once we did it was alright. But it did take some time to get used to. Not a bad thing, just different, so I think that once we got used to it everyone was in their comfort zone.” Ryan wanted to be sure and thanks to all those who have stood behind him and supported him throughout his career thus far, the good times and tough ones. “Everyone has been there for me for a long time, and I just want to thank them for that. A big thanks to my sponsors as well. To all the fans, we wouldn’t be doing what we love if not for them, and I’m very thankful. It’s been great. “I’ve had a good career at it, and the fans have been awesome. They’ve been with me since my rookie year and they know what I’ve been through. It feels great knowing that they’re still there behind me, 100%.” So now that Ryan is home, he has some time before he has to hit the road again to do what he wants to. And no, he is not going to Disneyland!

Humps-Horns.com · 25 · December 2016

“Now I’m gonna go rope! I like to say that I’m just a team roper with a bull riding problem. It’s fun to do, and I’ve got to ride bulls to pay for my team roping habit,” he laughed. Well, maybe he can make a career at that some day. He is currently driving the truck he won in a team roping competition in 2010, so the rumors that he is good at that, must be more than just rumors.

Ryan has always been humble, polite, and composed and nothing has changed. How good he was has never been questioned, and don’t be surprised if does follow in Cooper Davis’ footsteps – event buckle this year, World Champion next. Congratulations, Ryan!

Chase Outlaw wins the PBR BlueDEF Tour 2016 Finals and Season Championships PBR fans were treated to two Finals over nine days, which kicked off with the BlueDEF Finals on Oct 29-31 at the SouthPoint Hotel and Casino Arena. There was also the Ultimate Freestyle Bullfighting, a very exciting event to watch, which will be mentioned in this article as well. The first night of Blue DEF competition saw Brazilian Juliano da Silva outscore the 10 others who made a qualified ride to get the win in the first round of these Finals. He scored an 89.50 on the D&H Cattle Company bull, Cracker Breaker. Coming in second was Chase Outlaw, after his ride on the Exclusive Genetics bull Ms. Kitty’s Peacemaker netted him 88.50 points. In a tie for third were two more Brazilians, Dener Barbosa and Emilio Resende, who both posted a score of 85.50. Barbosa conquered Simon Says, a bull from Rickey West. Resende got his eight seconds on a Jared Allen Pro Bull Team/Phenom Genetics bull, The Lunatic. The second round was a tough one, featuring American Bucking Bull, Inc. (ABBI) bulls. There are certainly a lot of up and coming talent of the four-legged variety, to be sure. Only eight men were able to cover their bulls, and it was the popular Neil Holmes who did it best, scoring an 88 on Gambini, owned by Bar 3D Bucking Bulls for the win. Coming in second was Zane Cook. He received an 86 on Sic ‘Em On A Chicken, who is owned by Broken Arrow/Holthusen Bucking Bulls. Right below Cook was Derek Kolbaba, who put up a score of 85.50. He was able to ride the Martinez Bucking Bull, LLC/Edward Martinez bull, Livin’ Large. Barbosa, who tied for third the previous night, kept a low score of 51, but he was ultimately the only man to ride both of his bulls through Sunday night.

There was a bit of a thrilling moment when the aptly named Up and In decided he had enough of the arena and jumped right out and ran up the ramp. He was captured and put in a pen in the back, but since that is not something we see every day, it was exciting. This three-year-old bull had another, and more favorable, distinction. He was the ABBI Derby Classic winner for his owners Riley/Beckett/ Teague/Lackey/Lester. This is a cool young bull, and one to keep an eye on. Up and In was not the only bull that was enamored with that end of the arena. Many of the ABBI bulls wanted to exit there, and they really made the safety men, especially team roping header star Derrick Begay, work hard. Most of those bulls had to not only be roped, but they then put up a fight while trying to get them to the gate at the chute end of the arena. It was Championship Monday for the BlueDEF Finals, and 13 bull riders made the whistle in the third round. The eventual big winner, Outlaw, won Round 3 with a score of 87.50. He covered Tom Horn, who is owned by Double Bar J Cattle Company. In the Championship round Chase came in third after riding the Humpz and Hornz/KMH Wes Ibrahimi bull, Gas Pedal. This great showing by Outlaw jumped him up six places in the BFTS standings, sending him into those Finals on fire. He also put a cool $79,133.33 in his pocket and took home two belt buckles as well. Not a bad start to another week of Finals action for Chase! Outlaw bucked off his bull the previous night, but that just made him mad. “I’ve been doing so good and doing what I love – bucking off that bull last night, that fired me up more than anything, because that’s

just unacceptable. I would not let myself accept that. I came back today and I finished it! I want to keep it going.” Nathan Schaper was second. He rode his bull in the third round, and then was able to win the Championship Round with an 87 on King Buck, which is owned by BMC Bucking Bulls. This round win earned Schaper enough points to move from 37th place in the world standings up to 30th which was good enough to ride in the PBR World Finals. Holmes came in third, with Cook in fourth and da Silva finishing up the event in fifth. There were also five men who, because of their performances this week, moved into the BFTS Finals. Those were Holmes, Cook, da Silva, Barbosa, and Resende. The other competition that took place during the BlueDEF Finals was the aforementioned Ultimate Freestyle Bullfighting (UFB). For those of you who have never seen this type of event, the men engage the bulls for a minimum of 40 seconds. They have 30 seconds of extra time if they feel they might not have a high enough score to win the round. As in bull riding, both the bullfighter and the bull receive scores. To quote the UFB, “Bullfighters will be judged by their composure and self-control, aggressiveness and ability to engage with and control the bull as well as the level of exposure to risk and danger displayed.

“Bulls will be scored separately based on their level of aggressiveness, speed and quickness, fighting ability, danger factor and intelligence.” Bullfighters will be judged by their composure and self-control, aggressiveness There were 24 of the country’s best bullfighters who were invited to take part in the event. Two bullfighters paired up in the first two rounds, with the bullfighter that had the highest score advancing to the third round. From that round, four bullfighters made it into the Championship Round. When the dust settled, it was the man from Oklahoma, Wayne Ratley, who won what was reportedly the richest bullfighting competition in history. Ratley outshined all others in this contest, and it was a lot of fun to watch him demonstrate his skills. Wayne has only been fighting bulls four years, which is not a very long time to become as proficient as he is. “The win in Vegas was huge for me,” he told us. “I’ve been working my tail off every day in the gym to get in shape, and working the practice dummy with Frank Newsom every week. Because it was the first UFB event, and the richest bullfight in history, the win was a huge confidence builder for me. I have never won an event on such a prestigious stage. “God has blessed me, surrounding me with people who know what it takes to be successful in this business, and showing me the

amount of work and dedication is required to be successful. It really helped me and my family financially as well.” Ratley was emphatic with his last comment; “IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE A LION, TRAIN WITH LIONS!” In all, this was a great way to start off the PBR week – great bulls, great bull rides, and thrilling bullfighting action. We were looking forward to the next five days of competition.

Cooper Davis

2016 PBR World Champion

By Barbara Pinnella

Photos by Phillip Kitts / Avid Visual Imagery

After being only the fourth rookie in PBR history to win the PBR Finals event in 2015, Cooper Davis took complete control of his destiny this year, winning the World Championship. Davis rode four of his six bulls, winning the fifth round along the way. That victory put him over the top, leaving Kaique Pacheco and J.B. Mauney in his wake. Davis was understandably thrilled with the outcome. “This is the greatest feeling in the world. It is what I’ve worked so hard for my whole life, and all that work has paid off. You just set goals and believe in yourself to get it done. But honestly, I’m in awe right now.” Cooper was asked when in the season he began to believe that he actually could win the World Championship. “I think it happened here last year. Having all that confidence, putting the work in, and just believing in myself, it just kept escalating from last year,” he said. “I’ve been putting pressure on myself all year to do well, and I just got here and told myself it was time to have fun. You can’t change the outcome, so just have fun and keep doing what you’ve been doing all year.” Davis also stressed the importance of having his family and friends always supporting him, giving him strength. Ryan Dirteater fought his way into the event win, riding six for six. Check out the separate interview with Ryan, also found in this issue of Humps N Horns magazine. This was a great event with the winner of both the Championship and the event itself giving the fans all the excitement the PBR is known for. It was also the first time the Finals were held in their new home – the T-Mobile Arena, right off the Las Vegas Strip.

We will look at these Finals round by round, as well as mentioning the emotional moments that took place during the event. And just to let you know the caliber of the bulls, 14 of the best bull riders in the world did not ride one bull in five tries. Hmmm, that says a lot about the livestock. Round 1 – Wednesday night The three and four-year-old bulls from the ABBI came to play on this first night, and while 12 men were able to cover them, these strong youngsters showed that they were already a force to be reckoned with. Chase Outlaw picked right up where he left off after his victory as the BlueDEF Champion by winning the opening round. He scored an 89.50 on the very strong Air Marshall, a bull owned by D&H Cattle Co. Air Marshall also tied for second in the competition for best Classic bull. When asked how hard it was to stay positive after all his injuries (Outlaw has had three shoulder injuries in 16 months), Chase said, “When you’re at home, your buddies keep you motivated. I am riding with a lot of confidence right now and believe in myself. It was awesome to have that bull tonight. I saw that bull at BlueDEF and thought he was a really good bull.” Davis was second with a score of 87.50. He earned that aboard Show Kitty, a D&H Cattle Co. /Buck Cattle Co. bull. This good placing put Cooper a mere 60.33 points behind the world leader Kaique Pacheco, who did ride his bull but ended up in eighth place. Coming in third was Dirteater. He covered the D&H Cattle & Land Co. bull High Test. J.B. Mauney also made a bit of a climb toward his third World title, finishing in fourth. He rode Valedictorian, a bull owned by Winston Loe/Melton Bull Co. Though still trailing Pacheco and Davis, he did move up with the fourth place finish.

Cooper Davis rides Catfish John (Dakota RodeoBerger/Struve) for 91 points to win Round 5 and secure his first world championship.

Rodeo/Struve/Berger/Heald. Many didn’t know that Ty was riding with what ended up being a broken wrist, but he wasn’t about to let that slow down his momentum. “When I came in here tonight, my wrist was pretty sore – I wasn’t sure if I’d even be able to get on last night. It is broken, but I’m gonna ride anyway. Last night was some of the rankest in the world, and then tonight, well, I had my hands full. But it worked out. I feel my hand when I put my glove on, and after, but I ride more off of balance than my hand. When I ride I don’t really care, to be honest. “Big Cat is kind of like a Canadian bull, so I felt like I was back home. I didn’t know about him – it was hard for me to watch, being back home and hurt, so I didn’t know him. But he’s a pretty strong bull.”

Acting Crazy from Martinez Bucking Bulls was the high-score bull of the round with a 44.50. This was the ABBI’s first round to determine the Classic Champion, so it was a great start for Acting Crazy. Neil Holmes made a super ride on Bottoms Up, owned by Selman & Terell LLC. Unfortunately, he got called for slapping his leg during the ride. That was a shame, as his score would have been a very good one. Regrettably, there was a bad wreck this first night as well. Canadian Aaron Roy was hung up and knocked out. That proved to not be the worst of it however, as it was later reported that he suffered a broken right femur. Obviously, he was out the rest of the Finals. Healing thoughts go out to Aaron, who was replaced by Jorge Valdiviezo. Round 2 – Thursday night The bad boys were out tonight, and I don’t mean the cowboys. Most of the bulls that were up for World Champion Bucking Bull were in the pen for this second round, and they did not disappoint. Two men tied for the lead when they conquered their bovine dance partners. They were Guilherme Marchi and Ty Pozzobon, who both posted an 89.50. Marchi got his score on a bull owned by Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger, Smooth Operator. This was the first time that Smooth Operator had been ridden, and the fans were thrilled that it was done by Guilherme. Pozzobon covered Big Cat for his great score. That bull is owned by Dakota

About his own ride, Marchi said, “I had that bull before, and this is the second time this year I rode him. He bucked me off last year. But I have prepared myself to be here and I feel like I’m 25 years old. I have a chance to get another great bull tomorrow, so right now everything is going my way. “After the Finals last year I thought I’d retire. I tore both knees and my bicep in Canada and I tried to get on those bulls anyway. But I believe in myself, and when you have a dream you think everything is possible for you. And I’m back here again.” In third was Rubens Barbosa. He rode Wicked to an 89 score. Wicked is owned by J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen/Rafter D. In fourth was another Barbosa, Dener who garnered a score of 87.50 after riding Stone Sober. This was the second time that bull has been ridden this season. The other ride was made by Mauney, so the 2016 PBR Brazil Champion is in good company. Stone Sober is owned by D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co. And speaking of J.B., he was the only man of the top three battling for the World Championship to ride both of his bulls, finishing fifth in the round. He was making a slow but steady move on Pacheco and Davis. The high-marked bull of the round was D&H Cattle Co.’s SweetPro’s Long John, who was given a score of 45.75 after bucking off Kasey Hayes in 6.18 seconds. That put Long John in a good position to be World Champion Bucking Bull.

Another scary moment happened when Cochise flipped in the chute, crushing Wallace de Oliveira in the process. The tough Brazilian was offered a re-ride and took it. Even though he was bucked off his next bull, Hy Test, it was amazing that he even took the option after watching the hit he took in the chutes.

Tanner Byrne starts a nice ride on HAndsome Jeff (Gary long-Long Ranch/Martinez) but comes down early at 5.83 seconds.

Round 3 – Friday night Kaique reminded everyone that he was not going to relinquish his lead in the World standings without a fight. He won the third round on the Rocking I Rodeo Co. bull Crazy Horse, scoring an 89. Through an interpreter, Pacheco said that he was really happy that he won the round. Kaique has had Crazy Horse before, and has ridden him three times, two of those for Championship Round wins, and then this round victory. Davis was determined not to let Pacheco get too far away, as he tied for second. He rode Hammer Down, owned by Triplett Bucking Bulls, to an 88.50. Also scoring 88.50 was Pozzobon. He got his points after riding Modified Clyde, owned by Dakota Rodeo/Berger/Struve. Ty became one of only three men to ride all three of their bulls, the other two being Valdiron de Oliveira and Dirteater. After this round Pozzobon was also in the lead for the event average. In a tie for fourth were Wallace de Oliveira and Marco Eguchi, who each posted scores of 87.50. J.B. came down early off of Legacy. His race for a third World title was not over, but he definitely made his job harder. The highest marked bull in this round was Wired Child, who was given a 45 bull score. That bull is owned by 01 Cattle Co. Zane Cook got stomped on hard, but somehow managed to get up and walk out of the arena. Robson Palermo was not so lucky. He was out for the rest of the Finals beginning in this third round due to a torn ligament in his left knee, and replaced by Fraser Babbington. Also in this round, Neil Holmes took a hit that left him unconscious. It remained to be seen if he would ride in the fourth round. Round 4 – Saturday night When Mauney bucks off, look out, and that’s what happened in this round, as he came back and grabbed the victory. He scored a huge 90.25 points on Red Dawn, who had just been purchased by Berger/ Heald. This was the first 90-point ride posted in the T-Mobile Arena. That win and the 300 points that came with it vaulted him up the ladder for his third World title, as he really closed in on the two men ahead of him. Kaique managed only 18.75 points, while Davis got none. J.B. has said it before, but he made his feelings clear once again. “Money comes and goes, but what I want is that gold buckle.” He also says that he doesn’t like to know about the bulls beforehand, but rather ride them jump for jump. So what did he think of Red Dawn now? “I like him,” he said, smiling. “I’d pick him again if I had the chance. I don’t like to put a lot of thought into it. If I get thrown off it’s because

I was thinking too much. As far as what I will do when I no longer ride, I don’t know. It will have something to do with bull riding. It’s all I’ve done my entire life, so it will have to be something with bulls.” He also made one more announcement. “They have Air Time in there, and that’s who I’m gonna pick – Air Time! If I pick an easy one I usually don’t ride very well, but when I pick one that nobody wants, than it makes me want to prove everybody wrong.” Stetson Lawrence was second after riding Texicali to an 89 score. Texicali is owned by J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen. Right behind him was Marchi in third. He covered the Martinez bull that had the highest bull score in the first round, Acting Crazy, for an 88.75. There was a tie for fourth between Gage Gay and Joao Ricardo Vieira with scores of 88.25. Gay rode Rocking I Rodeo Co.’s Like a Boss, while Vieira got his score on Bottom’s Up, owned by Selman & Terell, LLC. The highest scoring bull of the round was Red Moon, with a 44.75. That bull is owned by Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls. Cody Heffernan got the call to replace the injured Holmes, who was knocked out the previous night. Round 5 – Sunday afternoon We moved into the final day, which brought with it the tightest points race in PBR history. Davis put the exclamation point on the Finals race when he won the fifth round with a big 91 score. He owned Catfish John with this great ride. In actuality, the bull is owned by Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Miller, but you get my point. In second was Dakota Buttar. He rode Hy Test, owned by Phenom Genetics, to a score of 88.25. Marchi was third with an 88 on Who

Dey, owned by K-C/Josey McElroy Bucking Bulls/Spark-lin Acres. Fourth place went to Eduardo Aparecido and Gangster Can Do. He got an 87.75 on the 01 Cattle Co / Robbie Schroeder bull. Neither Pacheco nor Mauney got any points this round, which made it mathematically impossible for them to catch Cooper. But moving into the Championship Round, unless you had been crunching the numbers all week, that fact was not well known. The D&H Cattle Company/David Huffman bull Jack Shot was the high-score bull in this round, earning himself a 45. This was the bull that bucked off J. B., after Mauney was given a re-ride when Air Time had an uncharacteristic bad out. Mason Lowe did not compete on Sunday due to a number of injuries he had sustained the past several weeks. He was replaced by Jason Paton. Also out was Emilio Resende, thanks to several rib fractures. Kurt Shephard took his place. Championship Round – Sunday afternoon Three men were able to cover their bulls in this exciting Championship Round. Dirteater scratched his way through his ride on Brutus, knowing that he had to ride this bull and get a good score doing it to win the event. He did just that, as the popular Oklahoma man scored an 89.75, his best score out of his six for six rides. Brutus is owned by D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co/Bob & Jeri Adams. Second to Ryan was Marchi. He rode Curtis Mendell’s Red Rover for 87.50 points. The 2008 World Champion rode five of six bulls and finished second in the event standings as well. In third was Valdiron. He was given 86.50 on VJV Nailed, owned by Vold Rodeo/Prescott/

J.A.R.S Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen. As always, we must give much praise to the bullfighters; Jesse Byrne, Frank Newsom, Shorty Gorham, and Cody Webster. Without these men there would be many more injuries, to be sure! And one more shout-out to one of the safetymen, Champion Team Roping Header, Derrick Begay. It was great to see him working both the BlueDEF Finals and the World Finals, and quite frankly, we wondered why he was here. “It is something I’ve always wanted to do. I have always been a bull riding fan, but I’ve never been on a real bull before, so this was the only way I could get a good seat,” he said with a smile. Begay, a seven-time WNFR qualifier and a World Champion from the Indian NFR, did not compete in team roping this year. Instead, he chased the dream of working the PBR. He admitted that after taking the year off he is kind of spoiled. But he certainly enjoyed working the two big Vegas events. “I worked a couple of events throughout the past year, and put my name in the hat for this job. I’m enjoying it. There are a lot of new things. I always like to see how things work behind the scenes, and meet new people.” “These bulls are the best in the world, and 98% of them just do their job and want to get back to the back pens, so most of the time I’m just here watching. The BlueDEF bulls, those younger ones, they were a little bit more work.

Zane Cook makes a valiant attempt on Air Time, Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team, but comes up short at 6.47 seconds.

“This was a job that I always wanted to do, I’ve always been a cowboy, and I’ve always been a bull riding fan, so those three things all tie in together.” Emotional moments Friday and Saturday proved to be a bit touching. First, there were not many dry eyes in the house when Valdiron announced his retirement. He initially did so in the media room on Friday, and the emotion he was feeling made it very hard for him to talk.

led us in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. But he stopped singing almost as quickly as he began. To hear roughly 20,000 people singing that great song A Cappella was an amazing moment that will not soon be forgotten. Chills, to be sure! Huge congratulations to our NEW World Champion, Cooper Davis, and event winner Ryan Dirteater! And congratulations to the other 2016 winners: Jess Lockwood – Rookie of the Year

“My son told me he didn’t want me to go to work anymore; he wants me to be done,” de Oliveira said. “This is so hard for me. I always wanted the World title, but it was not to be. But I feel good with my career.”

Chad Berger – Stock Contractor of the Year for the SIXTH time

During intermission on Saturday the announcement was made in the arena to those in attendance. Again, Valdiron found it hard to speak, as the fans gave him the standing ovation he so deserved. Of course, that emotional moment did not make things any easier for him, but he felt the love of the crowd.

Wicked Stick (Dakota Rodeo / Berger / Struve) – ABBI Champion Classic Bull

SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) – World Champion Bull

Valdiron rode his last bull to that third-place finish in the short-go, and we got to see those push-ups one more time. His ready smile and big talents will be greatly missed in the PBR. Then on Saturday, the best funnyman in the business, Flint Rasmussen, came out onto the stage in the center of the T-Mobile Arena in a suit. What was this? Well, after a brief introduction, he

Reese Cates Wins First Real Time Pain Relief Velocity Tour Event This was the first Velocity event of the season, and the first one under the banner of the Real Time Pain Relief Velocity Tour. It took place at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, California. There was a good-sized crowd in attendance for this single night performance, and they were really into the action from start to finish. Reese Cates covered both of his bulls, riding his way to a total score of 173.50 to win the first event of the 2017 season. Four other men covered both their bulls, but it was Cates who scored the most points. In the first round he rode Touch of Class, owned by Walking Lazy J Bucking Bulls to an 84.50. In the Championship Round he teamed up with the good bull Gas Pedal, owned by Humpz and Hornz, and received the highest score of the night, an 89. The 2008 PBR Rookie of the Year was excited to be able to get on this bull. “He’s a great bull. I saw Chase ride him in the BlueDEF Finals, and I was glad to get him. Watching all my buddies ride in the Finals in Vegas and me missing out this year, it lit a fire under me. I wanted to start strong.

The only other man to ride both of his bulls was Cody Ford, who finished off his night with a total of 159 and fourth place. He had a McClure Cattle Co. bull Haunt in the first round, and was given a score of 73. He was given a re-ride option due to the bulls’ sub-par performance, but opted to turn it down, figuring that score would get him in the Championship Round. That proved to be a good decision. In that short-go, he covered Blowing Smoke, owned by Humpz and Hornz / Sis & Stan Bucking Bulls for a nice score of 86. The fifth place man in the event was Robson “Spiderman” Aragao. Going by the time of his buck-off in the first round, he made it in on one bull and took full advantage of that, scoring an 85. He was paired up with El Capitan, owned by Humpz and Hornz / Sis & Stan Bucking Bulls. This was a very enjoyable event, with good bulls and bull riders. If one comes to your city, plan to attend. You will not be disappointed.

“This was a great event and Ontario is a fun crowd. I love coming to California, it’s always a blast. It’s beautiful here, the weather is always good, and I always seem to ride well in California.” Justin Lloyd came from Canada and made it a worthwhile trip, getting second place, with a total of 167.50 points. He rode another Humpz and Hornz bull, Slam Dunk, to an even 80 points in the first round. He upped that a lot with a big 87.50 in the Championship Round. That time his dance partner was Captain Jack, owned by Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls. Coming in third was Eric Lee. He covered Game Over in the first round to an 80 score. Game Over is owned by Humpz and Hornz/ Diamond Bar Cattle. On his second bull he was given a score of 84, giving him a two-bull total of 164. He conquered Blackie Big Wells, owned by Walking Lazy J Bucking Bulls. Reese Cates shows his winning form on the bull Gas Pedal.
