Humps N Horns is full of articles about some great people in the history of bull riding. We have Justin McBride, the two-time World Champion Bull Rider who has become one of the best analysts on TV and now serves as a coach for the Nashville Stampede in the PBR Team Series. It is not hard to tell that McBride is still passionate about the sport of bull riding and is doing his best to help the next generation. We also have an opportunity to meet Dr. Ed LeTourneau, DVM, who qualified for the first National Finals Rodeo in Dallas, Texas in 1959. Dr. Ed was able to put himself through vet school with the money he won on the rodeo trail. He has had quite a career which included four world championships in senior rodeo. Dr. Ed continued riding bulls well past the age that most decide to hang up the rope.

Clayton has had some success in PRCA and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo but has been trying his hand in the PBR for the past couple of years. He qualified for the PBR World Finals in 2022 and now competes
Hi, my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I’m a Jr bull rider. Today I’m going to be continuing my series on the best practice pens. So let’s get into it. Marshall Boyce’s practice pen located out in Floresville, Texas. His pen attracts some of the best youth and adult bull riders. Those riders include Gavan Hauck, Lorenzo Lopez, Damien Krushall, Macon Tomas, Caeden Earl, Gunner Garza, Trent Boyce, Sterling Huitron, Caden Mclain, and TJ Jewell. Just to name a few, there is a lot Marshallmore.owns the bulls that buck but there are a few other guys who bring bulls. Those “few other guys” bringing bulls are Rock’n H4 Bucking Bulls, Joe Mclain, and Damien Krushall. Marshal has anything from a steer to a turn back bull. Bones is a big’ol steer who just jump kicks around the pen. Good practice for the younger kids. Next you have Jelly Roll. Jelly Roll is two jumps out, around to the left and then “most of the time” back to the right around the five second mark. Jelly Roll is a outstanding bull for fourteen to sixteen year old riders. Marshall’s rankest bull is probably Clone. Clone is a big red bull with long horns and will go either way, depending on which side you buck him on. Rock’n H4 Bucking Bulls has a little mini bull by the name of South Side. South Side just jump kicks around the pen which is perfect practice, especially for the younger age group. Sugar Booger is another sweet practice bull from Rock’n H4 Bucking Bulls. Sugar Booger is in the gate to the right with a lot of speed. This bull trys to get the rider behind to throw him out the back door.
Practices start at 7pm on Thursday, there is a $20 per carload gate fee but no rider fee. This is one of the best South Texas practice pens hands down.
In my opinion, the best bucking bull that Rock’n H4 owns is Kodak Black. Kodak Black also goes out either side. No matter which side you buck him on he’ll be two jumps out, suck way back, and crank it with a lot of intensity in his spin. Kodak has a ton of kick and he hasn’t been ridden too many times.

The bull riders have become almost rock star status with fans etc. How did you handle it?
I figured out what I needed to do physically and mentally to ride any bull that I got on. What type of training did you do to stay in shape?

Anyone who follows the sport of bull riding knows the name Justin McBride. World Champion Bull Rider, sports announcer, singer and now the coach of one of the PBR teams. I thought it was time to interview one of the most well-known names in our sport. Tell us about yourself I was born in Texas but grew up on a ranch in Mullen, Nebraska. Growing up, we rode anything we could get on — horses, steers you name it. My dad worked on a ranch and several of my family members rode bulls. I competed in the bareback riding and bull riding in high school rodeo, and then went on to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, then joined the PBR when I was 19. I currently live in Whitesboro, Texas, with my wife Jill and two kids Addisen who’s 16 and Jaxsen who’s 12.

Let’s start with your bull riding career. What made you so good? I could stay on for eight seconds. I learned how to stay on them.
I like to get on the short round bulls the best. That’s where you got your separation. A lot of guys can ride long round bulls very few can ride short round bulls and even fewer allow themselves to ride short round bulls.

I didn’t do a lot early in my career. I stayed active riding horses and ranching during the week. It wasn’t until a shoulder injury that I started getting into the gym and working hard.
Ty Murray showed me a lot of band exercises at the time not many guys were doing it.
I didn’t really care too much about that. I didn’t pay too much attention to it and instead just lived my life.

When you started to think about retirement, did you have a plan? Yeah. I had about 300 head of cattle at the time and a ranch to tend to, so I was going to do that. I had been doing TV, and I knew they would probably use me on that side of things. I had just turned 29, and I had things set up to be able to quit. Did you ever think about being a stock contractor as some of the other bull riders have? No. I never had that desire.
What is hardest: sports announcing or being a bull rider? Why?

Definitely Bull rider – it’s dangerous, scary and physically demanding. None of those apply in TV. TV is still tough though, you can have a solid plan but you’re still dealing with a live animal and the plan can quickly go out the window.
Are any of your children interested in western sports? What are they involved in? They like Western sports. Both Jaxsen and Addisen enjoy riding horses. Jaxsen rides steers and love to rope, but I’m not sure if he will continue riding. He wrestles, plays football and baseball and then Addisen plays softball, volleyball and runs track so they are both pretty busy with conventional sports.
What bull did you not want to get on and why? There wasn’t any that I didn’t want to get on. There are some I knew would be harder to ride than others. But I never tried to go into it thinking “No, I don’t want that one.”
Anytime I would have an injury they would put me in the sports booth. Producers kept exposing me to it, and so it was an easy transition. It took some time to improve and get to where I could feel confident doing it. Did you get any training? Carlos DeMolina was one of the first producers that helped me. Craig Hummer has helped me a lot over years as well.
How do you prepare before an event?
No, I don’t think so. I would like to, but I’m not a play-by-play guy, I’m an analyst. You need to really understand the sport you’re calling to be successful, and I don’t think I have the credentials to call any other sports.
How did you transition from world champion bull rider to sports announcer?
A lot of pre-work goes into preparing before an event especially trying to know the bulls. I know all the guys pretty well already. When a new guy shows up you got to get to know him a little bit. Start to know their story and figure out strengths, weaknesses.
Do you ever see yourself as being a sports announcer for some other sport? If so which one?

What is your opinion of the riders today?
They are fantastic athletes. It’s a lot more complicated compared to 20 & 30 years ago. A lot of information and resources that didn’t exist even when I was riding. So, it’s very easy for it to get complicated. What advice would you give a young man who wants to be a bull rider?
Learn the basics and don’t ever stray from them no matter how far he goes. You are also a musician. Tell us about this career. Type of music, do you play events?
I watched Rio Bravo and love the scene where they’re playing guitars in the jail cell. So one day I went to a pawn shop and bought a guitar. I really just enjoyed sitting around with my buddies having fun. That’s all I wanted to do. I met some people over the years and one thing led to another and Tim DuBois had me come to Nashville and cut a record. It wasn’t anything I ever grew up wanting to be. It was an opportunity to come play music and do what I want. It sort of snowballed into go out and play then get a song out on radio. One day I took a step back and decided it wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. You are to be the head coach of the new team the Nashville Stampede which will compete this summer culminating in a “super bowl” in November. What type of coach will you be?
That’s yet to be determined. Everyone has a vision of what they want to be, but you won’t know until you start going. I have a layout on the function and the things I want to instill in our team. We’re all figuring this out together. What riders would make up your dream team?
The riders that we have on the Nashville Stampede. Where do you see yourself in ten years? I don’t know. Still with my family and hoping to have something to do with bull riding.
What is your opinion of the bulls today?
There’s more good bulls today than there’s ever been. There’s always been great bulls, but there are so many 87-90 pointers today it’s not even a comparison
It was an obvious choice at the time to buy his PRCA permit and go to a few rodeos. It didn’t take Gaffney very long at all to win the $1,000 in order to obtain a full fledged membership in the PRCA. He traveled with and became very close friends with Colorado City, Texas bull rider Brent Terry. They also traveled with Mark Terry who had by now become a farrier by trade.
During his rookie season, Michael Gaffney only competed at about 25 rodeos and missed qualifying for the WNFR by about $3,000. Early in his bull riding career he stated that he had the most fun while traveling with world class bull riders Norman Curry, Mark Cain and Dax Lackey. Gaffney was also able to spend very valuable time and really got to know other very talented young bull riders such as Larry Williams, Buddy Reed, Philip Graf, Randall Thornton, Joey Hubbard, Brent Thurman, Bo Davis and Tom Messick just to name a few.

Gaffney developed his tough guy mentality while playing football, baseball and basketball. He was a very talented and gifted athlete but realized very early that he was never going to have the size and speed in order to excel at those sports at the next level. The Gaffneys purchased a motor home to haul the guys up and down the rodeo trail. The kids from New Mexico proved to be a very talented group qualifying for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rapid City, South Dakota. The team ended up in third place overall at Pueblo, Colorado three years later. They competed against other notable rodeo cowboys such as Ty Murray and Denny McClanahan.
Michael Gaffney was born in July 1969 on the K.I. Air Force Base in Marquette, Michigan. This was during the height of the Vietnam War and his father was a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force. His father Robert and his mother Francis were both originally from Iowa. His mother affectionately loved horses and was a fanatic about being around them. Michael’s interest in large farm animals came strictly from his mother. When he was only two years old, his parents bought him a Shetland pony.
Robert Gaffney was not around as much because he was serving his country flying two missions in the F4 Phantom jets over Vietnam. As soon as the war was over Robert retired from military service.
After his high school graduation Gaffney enrolled at the Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas. He thought it was pretty cool to have earned a rodeo scholarship awarded by the rodeo team coach Bob Doty and actually have his tuition paid so he could attend Whileschool.still
Later, Michael would attend a rough stock riding school in December 1986 taught by Tuff Hedeman, Cody Lambert and Dave Appleton. During the school he twice got on SO who would later be named Bad to the Bone after he was sold to stock contractor Mac Altizer’s Bad Company Rodeo. College rodeo coach Bob Doty was in attendance and got a first hand look at the young talent bull rider from New Mexico.
Gaffney ended up qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on two different occasions. He won the average in 1991 and ended up third in the final World Standings. He successfully rode nine out of the ten bulls and the only one to get him on the

Their neighbors, the Griffin family, lived right next door. There were four Griffin brothers. Shawn Griffin and Michael Gaffney would become the best of friends. The Griffins were all very involved in the sport of rodeo and mentored the younger Gaffney boys. Michael started out by riding steers when he was only about five years old. The first time he ever got on a steer it only lasted about two jumps. He also tried his hand at roping when he was about nine years old.

in college he went to all of the local jackpots. They competed at Charlie Thompson’s place in Lubbock, Texas on a regular basis. Michael often traveled with a young and talented bull rider named Adam Brewster. Brewster was destined to go a long way at the professional level but unfortunately was seriously injured and had his bull riding career cut short.

Gaffney’s 96.5-point ride on Little Yellow Jacket in Nampa, Idaho, in 2004 was tied for the highest-scored bull ride in PBR history. It was a record that stood for 17 years until it was broken by Jose Vitor Leme twice within four months late in the 2021 season when Leme went for 97.75 points and then 98.75 points on Woopaa.
G-Man qualified for the PBR Finals nine times and was crowned the PBR World Champion in 1997. Some of the most memorable moments in Gaffney’s PBR career was successfully riding Little Yellow Jacket on two different occasions. Little Yellow Jacket a three time Bucking Bull of the Year who was owned by Joe and Nevada Berger and was one of the all-time great bucking bulls in the PBR history. Gaffney retired from the PBR and fulltime competition in 2005. He had previously dabbled as a television commentator at various PBR events alongside Brett Haber. He worked as an analyst from 2005Afterwards,2010.

Mark Cain, Gaffney and Adriano Moraes all placed in the bull riding and thus qualified at the Cow Palace in order to make the final WNFR roster in 1996.
Gaffney was selected as a head coach for the inaugural season of the PBR team championships which had their debut and kicked off the 2022 season on July 25th and July 26th to a packed house and very boisterous and raucous crowd at the World Famous Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. The action packed rides and excitement were very thrilling at “the Daddy of ‘em All.”

Gaffney competed in the Bull Riders Only series where he was tagged with the monicker of the “G-Man” by legendary rodeo announcer and icon Bob Tallman. Way back in the day reference to a G-Man was a Government Man, detective or a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Later on Gaffney became one of the original investors of the PBR who each put up a $1,000 seed money investment which proved to be one of the biggest returns in the history of Wall Street.
Michael slowly drifted away from the limelight until he was inducted into the PBR Ring of Honor in November 2005 along side of 1973 PRCA World Champion bull rider Bobby Steiner. He was inducted into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas in May 2021. The Gaffneys purchased a place in Corrales, New Mexico and he settled down and became a family man. Gaffney had been very involved in the construction business buying and renovating houses and then flipping them back on the market to prospective home buyers. Michael has been married to Robyn for 32 years who is a professional pathologist. His son Marek who is now age 14 and daughter Destin 19 keep him pretty busy with all of their individual sports activities.
Gaffney’s team is the Austin Gamblers. They were fortunate enough to be awarded the very first pick in the draft in May and selected two time PBR World Champion bull rider Jose Vitor Leme who without a doubt is one of the most heralded and talented bull riders of all time.
Michael “G-Man” Gaffney has been fortunate enough to have had a very successful and standout career as a top notch professional bull rider. Now he has been blessed to be put into a position where he can coach, encourage and give back to the current professional bull riders who are on tour and will continue to have a lasting legacy to the next generation of young bull riders. Reflecting back on his life and career G - Man said, “My 14 year old son Marek is a soccer player and I’m blessed as a father because he chose “not” to ride bulls. For myself, it’s all I ever wanted to do. I’m a fortunate person who married my best friend and soul mate 35 years ago. Robyn has helped me raise two beautiful kids, win a world championship, and has been by my side throughout every injury and surgery. Somewhere in there, she had her own career practicing medicine. I now find myself with the rewarding task of coaching young professionals, a storybook ending to a sport that has given me so much.”

I remember a dark, cold, windy night when I had to walk along a lightless street to get home. I was frightened by all kinds of shifting shadows. I raced down the middle of that street as fast as I could till I was safely home. What do you become anxious about? I heard a good sermon recently about a correlation between anxiety and prayer. When we are anxious, we can turn to the One who is aware of all our circumstances and who will meet us in our times of anxiety. To him we pray, thanking him for who he is and telling him our anxieties. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm Being46:10).still gives us time to discern God and his love. I repeat the word “Father” over and over until I am at peace with God my Father. Then anxiety has its rightful place; it is in his hands, not mine. Humps-Horns.com · 15 · September 2022 INGREDIENTS • 8 lasagne noodles • 2 cups chicken, (cooked and shredded) • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded For Garlic Alfredo Sauce: • ¼ cup butter • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 4 oz cream cheese • ½ tsp garlic, minced • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • ¼ tsp salt • ¼ tsp pepper • 1 cup parmesan cheese, grated Submitted by Jacob L. - Fairfield, OH
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 9×13 inch pan with cooking spray and set aside. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain and rinse the noodles with cold water and lay them on a paper towel to remove excess water.

Chicken Alfredo Roll-Ups

In a medium saucepan add butter, heavy whipping cream, and cream cheese. Cook over medium heat and whisk until melted.
Spread 2 tablespoons of the alfredo sauce over each noodle. Take the shredded chicken and spread evenly over each noodle and top with about 3 tablespoons shredded cheese.
Carefully roll up each lasagne noodle and place seam side down in the prepared pan. Repeat. Once they are all in the pan, pour the remaining alfredo sauce over the top and top with remaining cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes until heated through and cheese is bubbly.
Add the grated parmesan cheese. Bring to a simmer and continue to cook for about 3 to 5 minutes or until it starts to thicken. Line the bottom of the 9×13-inch pan with 1 cup of the alfredo sauce.
Young gun Clayton Sellars admitted that he really never had a doubt about what he wanted to be, mainly due to his family influence. He followed in the footsteps of some of his family members to walk, or should I say ride, down the rodeo trail. His father, Brady, rode bulls as did other members of his im mediate family. “I feel bad that I can’t really pinpoint what drove me there. It wasn’t just a one-day decision kind of thing. I was born into it, lived in it, decided I enjoyed it, and kept doing it. My dad is a cattleman and my uncle and grandpa are cowboys, so I just grew up as a cowboy kid.

In high school, Clayton did get on some bareback horses and some saddle broncs. Truth be told, he loved it. He told us that bronc riding was probably his favorite event that he didn’t do.
“But at that point I was already in high school and was a pretty

“We did everything that went with that. We rode horses, we were working cows, and we were riding colts or getting on bulls for fun. All that turned into something that I was good at and I was having fun. I got a rodeo scholarship to Western Texas College. That’s when I started getting serious and the switch was flipped. I stepped into the pros when I turned 18 and had a lot of success right off the bat. That really lit a fire.”

“But here in the PBR we are in the same place at the same time every single week. You don’t get a break. In the PRCA there were some times where you got cut some slack, but that’s not how it is here in the PBR.”
“But realistically, if I didn’t go down the bull riding path, I would probably be racing dirt bikes and doing motocross right now. Yeah, that is probably what I would be doing, because when I was 10 or 11, I was racing dirt bikes then, and that was everything I wanted to do. So I feel if I didn’t make that switch to bull riding at that young age, I would be racing those bikes.
“In the PRCA everybody’s kind of spread out. There are some extremely, extremely talented bull riders in the PRCA, and some really tough bucking bulls there as well. But on one weekend, those top bull riders and bulls might be spread out between six different places.
“I do have a dirt bike, and kick it around through town quite a bit. But on my days off I ride reining cow horses for a trainer in Visalia, California, so I spend lots of time riding horses at their place. I do have three or four days off a week, so I spend pretty much every day riding 2-year-olds for them.”
When asked what else he would like to say, Clayton got a bit philosophical about his chosen profession.

So I thought I would just continue on with the bull riding and try to light the world on fire. My rookie year in the PRCA was 2018. I went to the NFR three times, and from there stepped into the PBR.” Clayton explained some of the differences that he found between the two organizations.
“I think about what made me have even the slightest bit of suc cess in this sport, and it always comes back to that moment when I made the decision and started dreaming every day. I started thinking what the possibilities would be if I did this or that. And slowly it just became a reality.
There are a lot of things that interest Clayton; he is not onedimensional. He is somewhat captured by the thought of being a fighter pilot. He loves playing football and baseball.
“I love the team format, it’s major league sports! It has brought us into the same picture as the MLB, the NFL, the NHL. It makes us feel that way as bull rid ers, like we’re in a major league game; like we’re doing what we do at the highest level. “We were doing that beforehand, too”, he added. “But with this, as bull riders, all of our talent and energy is all self-manufac tured. But when you put five of us together, it’s quite insane. I wish everyone could feel it.” Clayton did agree that for the diehard PBR fans, it might take a bit of time, but he also believes that all great things do take “Itime.think that this is doing everything good for the sport. I do believe that they are onto something with this team league. I think we are just going up from here.”
There have been many thoughts on the team for mat that the PBR is implementing for most of the year. Some really like it, while others hate it, feel ing it is an individual sport. Many however, are kind of taking a step back, watching and waiting to see what happens. But Clayton was not one of those on the fence.

And congratulations are in order. Clayton is single, but that will not be the case for much longer. He is set to become a mar ried man in November. Keep your eyes on this very personable young man. “Three years ago, I was just dreaming about this. And here I am today. It just rolls into the reality at some point if you just keep it in your head long enough. So I would tell a kid that might want to be a bull rider, or anything else they really want, just dream big and hold onto it. That’s what I want the young kids to know; just hold onto it and go after it with everything you have!”

“We teach these kids the right moves,” Ed shared. “When they learn the right moves, and their muscles are trained for the right moves, they can practice the right way. This increases their chances of staying on board for the eight seconds and lessens their chances of getting hurt. It is important for these kids to learn the right moves from someone that knows them and can teach them. They need to learn the right moves from the right people. We have a teaching time and then a riding time. We provide calves, steers, small bulls, and regular bulls.”

“I tell these young bull riders that if they don’t have a passion for bull riding, they might as well go on home and do something else,” Ed explained. “You have to have a passion for it to stick with it and be successful. You have to have the right frame of mind to keep it going.”
Ed was inducted into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in Fort Worth this past May. “That was really special,” Ed said. “It was special because it’s like your colleagues vote on you. It was a big honor.” He was also inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 2016. Ed grew up in Stockton and Oakdale, California. As youngsters, Ed and his older brother Ray worked for their uncle raising cutting steers, then began working on the U-3 Ranch as hands. Ray started riding bulls at the ranch, and then at local rodeos. Ed, four years younger than Ray and wanting to keep up with his big brother, started riding calves and steers and competed in his first rodeo when he was 13. He and Ray continued to ride bulls at local events during high school. Ed was an all-around athlete in high school, playing football, wrestling, and running track. He went on to put himself through eight years of college on his rodeo earnings, competing in the NIRA (National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association) and the RCA (Rodeo Cowboys Association, the forerunner of the PRCA). He went to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and could often be seen studying behind the chutes.

Meet Ed LeTourneau. Ed is a four-time NSPRA (National Senior Pro Rodeo Association) World Champion bull rider and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He has a passion for the “toughest sport on dirt” and has led quite a full cowboy life. The last time he climbed on a bucking bull and nodded for the chute to open, he was 64 years old! Now at 87 years old, he still helps out at the veterinary hospital in Madera, California. And Ed continues to be passionate about bull riding and gives back to the sport by holding a weekly bull riding clinic for kids 8-18 years-old at Jerry Brown’s Toro Bravo Arena in Fresno.

I was riding to make enough money to get through vet school. My best years bull riding were actually while I was in school. Bull riding treated me good. I earned enough money to pay my expenses and go to college.”
In 1981, Ed was contacted because they needed bull riders for the NSPRA (National Senior Pro Rodeo Association). Ed rode two bulls and won third place. He rode in several rodeos that year. “In 1989, my friend and fellow bull rider Ronny “Punch” Rawson asked me to join the NSPRA and give him some competition,” Ed said. “I rode in 1990, but I pulled my groin muscle. I was too heavy and out of shape. So, I went to the gym and started working out and went on to win four NSPRA Bull Riding Championships, from 1991 through 1994!”
At one point, Ed worked as a vet for Wes Ibrahimi at Humpz N Hornz Bucking Bulls in LeGrand, California. “What’s cool about Doc,” Wes shared, “is he was riding bulls and studying to be a vet at the same time! He went to the first NFR in 1959, and now at 87 years old, he is the only bull rider from that first NFR still alive. And he rode bulls until he was over 60 years old! He is a phenomenal guy!”
Dr. Ed’s legacy will long impact the sport that he loves. He and his wife, Frankie, make their home in Madera, California. “One of my biggest thrills was going to the first NFR (PRCA National Finals Rodeo) at the Dallas State Fairgrounds in 1959,” Ed disclosed. “I came in second place in the bull riding. My most memorable moment was the week I won Calgary, then went to Salinas and came in second. I won $5,000 that Edweek!”traveled with rodeo and bull riding champion Larry Mahan after recovering from an injury in 1964. “Larry asked me if I would like to travel with him in his airplane. I did that for about a year and a half. Larry Mahan is my good friend Edforever!”retired from bull riding in 1967 and went into practice in his hometown of Oakdale, working on two big horse farms. In 1971, Oakdale held its 100th anniversary rodeo. Ed decided he really wanted to enter the bull riding, even though he hadn’t ridden bulls for four years. He entered the bull riding and won the event!
