Letter from the Editor

Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that we have closed out another year and are starting another one. They say time flies when you’re having fun so we must be having a really good time. The 2019 season has come to a close for the two largest rodeo / bull riding associations. This National Finals Rodeo was one of the most exciting that I can remember. The bull riding crown wasn’t really in question but Boudreaux Campbell sure made it an exciting ten days. Sage Kimzey made the rides and did what he needed to do to secure his sixth consecutive World Championship.

We’d also like to congratulate Stetson Wright as the 2019 All-Around Cowboy. In my humble opinion, it is great to see a roughstock rider win this coveted buckle again. Thinking back to the late 80’s and early 90’s, the All-Around race was dominated by guys such as Dave Appleton, Lewis Feild, and Ty Murray. Hopefully, Mr. Wright will begin another streak for the roughstock end of the arena. We hope you enjoy this issue and our coverage of the National Finals Rodeo. I am grateful for the amazing team of people who work diligently each and every month to make each issue the best that it can possibly be. Until next time, Terry

Talking “Bull” with Brayden

Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to talk about announcing the Texas Christian Junior Bull Riders state finals. This was a huge step in my career and a great honor. So let’s get into it. Before we get started I need to let you know why I was announcing and not riding. In August, I was at a practice pen getting ready for regional finals. As I jumped off a bull, I landed funny on my right leg and broke my femur in half. After two days in the hospital I was released with a steel rod in my leg and crutches. It may seem like a big deal to you but it is common in the sport to break bones, it just so happened to be my femur. My recovery has been good, but I will never forget breaking the biggest bone in my tiny body. When we first arrived in Andrews, Texas we set up the computer with music and tested the mics. Then we waited for the kids in the alley to get lined up. After introductions were over it was time for some bull riding. Reading the kid`s names and their bio sheets was the most fun part because when you flipped the page you didn’t know what you’d get. After the first round was over and I knew most of the names by heart it was time for round number two.

The short go was the most intense round but left me feeling sad because it was my last time to announce. It was so much fun because I got to watch the kids battle it out from the announcers perspective and say what I thought to everyone in the stands with a microphone. After it was all over I now have a greater appreciation for announcers. It is a hard job but rewarding because I now know all the riders much better than before. I hope this is the first of many more rodeos I get to announce. Thank you for reading I look forward to writing to you each month. To find out more about me go to my Facebook page @Brayden Hollywood Brown. Thank you, Brayden Hollywood Brown

As round number two arrived it brought fire works that woke everyone up from staying up so late the night before. After we prayed and sang the national anthem kids that bucked off in round one got a little more gritty as the competition got even tighter. Round number two was my favorite round because I gained confidence and things started rolling off my tongue. I took every round as an opportunity to improve and show my professionalism.

Spiritual Leaders Many spiritual leaders have confined people to the rules of a doctrine or creed rather than pointing them to sonship and the fullness of Father’s Kingdom. Many people have been duped by religious leaders to blindly follow them instead of releasing them to the freedom of hearing from the Father’s Spirit for themselves. Oh, but the ones who let us know that Father trusts us and gives us responsibility with the wisdom from His Spirit are giving us exactly what we need. Funny how those who are walking under the religious spirit try to line out those who don’t see things the way they do. Lack of trust will cause religious people to try to change others through their own power rather than to give relationship and God’s Spirit a chance to bring the change that the Father wants in each of His children. They have doctrine and their belief system down to a tee and most of the time they quote the Bible yet sacrifice a trusting relationship to be right. In many cases, this damages any chance for a relationship of trust to take place. That doesn’t sound like what the Bible describes as to how Jesus did it. I’d like to know, what the goal is anyway? Manipulate them to serve something (a system) they can’t trust or to point them to a Faithful Loving Father. Children have an inheritance while servants have duty.

Here is a short Quote from a good friend... “As a pastor, my job is not to teach you what to do. My job is to teach you who you are”. Andy Taylor I pray that those of influence in your life direct to to who you are and freedom in Fathers Spirit. Jesus Loves You Cody Custer

Too Much Sun Exposure It is not just cold weather that can be drying to the skin. Spending too much time in the sun, especially during the summer, can lead to a sunburn. A sunburn dries out your skin, and also leaves it susceptible to itching. Hot Showers Taking long hot showers may feel relaxing, but if the water is too hot, it can strip the natural moisture from your skin. The same goes for soaking in a bath that is hot. Skin Irritants Certain products, such as soap and detergent, that contain fragrances or dyes may be drying. Some products are also formulated to remove the oil from the skin and can strip moisture in the process. Symptoms of Dry Skin When dry skin develops, it can also have additional symptoms, such as the following:

6 Home Remedies for Dry Skin Dry skin is something most of us will have to deal with at least occasionally. In most instances, dry skin is more of a nuisance than anything else. But your skin is also your body’s first defense against pathogens, such as bacteria. Protecting the health of your skin, including moisture, helps maintain that barrier. Keep in mind, it is also common for dry skin to be accompanied by itching. When you combine dry skin with itching and scratching, you increase your risk of developing cracks in the skin and possibly even a skin infection. Whether dry skin involves your hands, legs, or entire body, it is helpful to determine the cause. Also, using home remedies will help keep your skin looking and feeling good. Causes of Dry Skin Usually, the cause of dry skin is not serious. Typically, dry skin develops due to a loss of moisture. Dry skin can occur occasionally or become a chronic problem. Potential causes of dry skin include the following: Cold Weather Cold weather is also often very dry. The low humidity level can dry out your skin. Plus, most people spend more time indoors when the weather is cold. The heat from fireplaces, furnaces, and space heaters can also be drying to the skin.

Itching Cracked skin Redness Burning Peeling

If symptoms are severe enough, dryness can lead to deep cracks in the skin that bleed and potentially can become infected. 6 Home Remedies for Dry Skin Most instances of dry skin are not serious and can be treated at home with various remedies. Using a combination of the solutions below may work best. Consider the following: #1) Use a Moisturizing Sunscreen To prevent sunburn, use a sunscreen that also contains a moisturizer. Sunscreen can help prevent skin dryness and skin damage, along with reducing your risk of skin cancer. Remember to apply sunscreen every day you are outside during the daytime. The sun’s rays can lead to sunburn even in the winter and on cloudy days. #2) Avoid Long, Hot Showers Sometimes, just changing your shower habits to cooler water can prevent dry skin. Instead of hot water, keep the water lukewarm and limit showering time to about ten minutes. After getting out of the shower, apply a moisturizer while you are still a bit damp. This helps seal in the moisture. #3) Opt for Fragrance-Free Products Choose products that do not contain dyes, fragrances, or chemicals that lead to more dryness and possible itching and

skin and increase dryness.

#4) Use a Humidifier Using a cool-mist humidifier may help keep moisture in the skin. It is especially helpful during the winter and can combat the dryness of your heating system. According to Harvard Medical School, the humidifier should be set to 60 percent.

If you use the home remedies above, you should notice your skin improving quickly. If making certain changes does not decrease skin dryness, consider seeing a dermatologist. A dermatologist will examine the skin and may prescribe prescription ointments if needed. If you have additional skin problems that lead to dry, itchy skin, such as psoriasis or dermatitis, it may be helpful to see your healthcare provider for more treatment options.

#5) Apply an Anti-Itch Lotion Since dry skin often also leads to itchy skin, try applying an anti-itch lotion. An anti-itch lotion can soothe the skin while reducing both dryness and itching. By decreasing itching and scratching, you also reduce the risk of cracked skin and an infection. When choosing an anti-itch lotion, look for products that have nature’s ingredients that will not irritate the skin further. Good choices are products containing helichrysum, colloidal oatmeal, and shea butter. It’s also best to use a lotion that is free of steroids, fragrance, and parabens. #6) Wear Cotton Clothing When Exercising Cotton clothing draws moisture away from the skin, which can reduce possible irritation that leads to dryness. It might also be helpful to avoid wearing wool clothing, which could irritate the

Inspiration Point

I am sure you know what continually means, but I thought I would share the definition for emphases. The story of Daniel amazes and challenges me. This pagan King realized that Daniel CONTINUALLY served the Lord. His life was lived in a way that people, even those who didn’t worship God, knew Daniel did. Today, I will hear people talk about a man who lived a life like Daniel. He continually followed God. His love for God and love for others was exuberant . He loved others because God first loved Him. He continually and faithfully served the Lord. I pray, like Daniel and Cliff, I will continually serve the Lord.

Continually

Guest article writen by Jon Haley, Hallmark Baptist Church - Fort Worth, Texas

Daniel was a man who had purposed in his heart to live for God. Daniel practiced daily habits of spiritual discipline. The habit of prayer three times a day was more important than the new law forbidding him to pray. He chose to live for the Lord even if it meant that he might be killed. He chose to honor God and worship God, not man. Today, I will be performing a graveside and memorial service for a man who, like Daniel, loved God. I will get to hear one of his grandsons speak about the faith of his Grandfather. I will hear men in our church talk about how this older man influenced their lives for Jesus. He was a man of convictions, character, and faith. This man lived up to Psalm 34:1 Psalm 34:1 1 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. This verse came to my mind today as I read Daniel 6:11-24. The word, continually, is used twice in these few verses. Daniel 6:16 16 So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.” Daniel 6:20 20 And when he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”

Outside the Arena with...

Sandy Callahan By Georgia Akers

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2020 is a wonderful year for you. Any sport depends on the fans for financial support but also emotional support. Football teams need their fans to cheer them on to victory. Well, our riders also need the support of fans. Without them, where would they be? I wanted to start the year “outside the arena” with a fan. I have said many times that the fans that follow the support of bull riding are truly a family and some of the nicest people you could ever meet. I met Sandy Callahan over ten years ago. It was my second PBR World Final and was fortunate enough to be seated next to her in the upper seats..think nosebleed. These seats were the only ones that were available and as you renew you get better and better seats. But this finals for me was special because of Sandy. It was just plain fun to be seated next to her and her group of friends.

Sandy with Larry Mahan.

Tell us a little about yourself. I am from a map-dot town of 700 in Northwest Iowa, Everly, Iowa. It is a farming community and it definitely contributed to who I am and my values. At the age of 17, and after the death of my father, my mother and I moved to San Diego, CA to be by her family. Even though I had spent some family vacations in San Diego, it was definitely different than Northwest Iowa. I started working for the Federal Government beginning with the Veterans Administration and then moving to the Department of Defense, Department of the Navy. I am starting my 45th year with the Federal Government and for the last 41 years have worked as a financial/ management analyst. That is just a nice way of saying I look at financial data and put together spreadsheets on budget and spending trends. How did you get interested in the sport of bull riding? Our family would attend the rodeo in Cherokee, Iowa in the summer and that is what started this love. We are talking about the mid-60’s and I saw Larry Mahan, and as they say, the rest is history. At the county fairs, there was

Humps-Horns.com · 16 · January 2020

always some sort of event that we would attend. I am interested in the rodeo circuit as well, but unfortunately do not attend many events, but I do keep tabs on it. How long have you been going to the PBR Finals? 2007 was the first year I went to the PBR Finals and I have been every year since. The first two years I sat in the upper section of seats at the Thomas and Mack Arena and after that, I did better planning for seats in the lower section. I certainly enjoyed the Thomas and Mack environment and excitement and the parking price was a good deal. The T-Mobile Arena has a different environment and excitement. I want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone involved in the PBR for all of the tremendous work they do each and every day to provide good events for us. Obviously, I enjoy the bull riding sport and have the utmost respect and admiration for every rider, bull fighter, stock contractor, and everyone else that is involved in this community. On the other hand, my life has been so enriched by the people I meet at each event and the friendships I have made across the country. I look forward to each event but at the same time I am so anxious to see these friends and spend time with them. Gosh, that is how you and I met about 10 years ago [up in those high seats!] and I so look forward to seeing you and Sam each year.

Sandy with Cody Nance in Anaheim, CA.

Approximately how many events do you attend? In addition to the PBR Finals, I attend 5-6 other events during the year, work and time permitting. Each one is unique and has its own flavor and flair. Could you expand on this? Heartland people are different. They are more courteous. The crowd understands the sport and gets into it more. For instance, Billings, Montana. This is a small town and everyone knows each other. Sioux Falls is the same way. At Anaheim, you get more a Hollywood crowd who do not have as much knowledge about the sport.

Since you live in California do you mainly go the west coast events? Actually, I have only gone to the event in Anaheim. Quite often the other events coincide with a busy work schedule. Perhaps once I retire I will be able to venture out more! I do go to the Sioux Falls event every year since that is so close to my home and every year family and friends from Iowa join me. For the past 8+ years I have gone to Billings and joined 4 other ladies at that event. We are a force to be reckoned with! I went to the Albuquerque event for the first time this past year and that certainly is an experience. Time permitting, I try to go to these towns a day or two early so I can explore it. I like to check out the museums, the zoo or botanical gardens, bookstores, just walk around, and for those that know me, I talk and meet people. (Editor’s Note: I do not think Sandy knows a stranger!!)

Sandy and Judy Fagan having some fun while trying to win tickets in Billings, MT.

Favorite Rider of all time and why? I like and respect them all but Eduardo is special.. Favorite Bull? No particular bull. They are all athletes. I sit next to Karen and Bill at the finals. They own bulls. Through them, I have come to appreciate the Pages. I now have more knowledge about the breeding and raising of bulls. Dillion and HD are one of the top stock contractors for bucking bulls. Favorite Rider currently and why? Favorite? I follow, support, and encourage all of the riders. I want to see all of them do as good as they possibly can and hopefully with minimal injuries. They are all pursuing their dreams and I want to support them and let them know I want the best for them, always. Do I cheer a bit louder for some? Of course I do, but that is only because I may know that rider a bit better or have watched him for a longer time. Each rider brings something different to the table, in their style and demeanor, but they are all very special. The riders are “family” as is the entire PBR. It truly is a family to me.

Favorite bull of all time and why? Since you were the first stock contractor I met 10+ years ago and you owned Delco at that time, I will honor him.

Eduardo Aparecido is one of those that I have gotten to know better. Several years ago when Eduardo’s English was limited, we were in the Denver airport. The planes have been canceled due to weather. I told him to stay with me. I helped him get rescheduled. We were in the waiting area for 6-7 hours and at one point someone came up and asked if he was my son. Ever since then, he calls me his American mom. I have met his family and he is special to me because I have gotten to know him better than others.

Sandy with MBR rider Naijah Knight.

Matt Scharping is a man with a passion for the “toughest sport on dirt”, and a man on the move! As you may recall, a few years back Matt and his Phenom Genetics, Inc. was partnered with retired NFL star Jared Allen. Matt ran Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team, featuring champion bull contender Air Time. When Jared decided to pursue other opportunities two years ago, Matt bought him out. This purchase included some great bulls like Air Time, Bad Beagle, Uncle Tink and Magic Train. Matt added them to his own growing stock of carefully bred bucking bulls. Fast forward to the present, and Matt has just partnered with Wade Sankey and Sankey Pro Rodeo, who this year qualified their 400th animal for the Wrangler NFR! “Wade does a fantastic job how he handles the horses. It’s a lot like how I handle the bulls. You really have to love these animals to be successful in this business.” This move has opened the door to the PRCA for Matt and Phenom Genetics. Deaconator and Matt enjoy a morning conversation. Deaconator, a 4 year old bull, was selected for both the PBR World Finals and the National Finals Rodeo. Photo courtesy of Matt Scharping.

As a stock contractor, Matt had the distinct and unusual honor of providing bucking bulls to both the PBR World Finals and the PRCA Wrangler NFR this year! “I took six bulls to the PBR Finals,” Matt revealed. “And I have three bulls at the Wrangler NFR. Bad Beagle, HyTest and Deaconator.” “These bulls are bred to do what they do,” Matt shared. “And they love it! If they didn’t love it, they wouldn’t do it well. They are bred to do a job. The animal knows when it is time to do their job, and they get excited to do it. Our job is to feed them and take care of them right. You have to treat and feed these animals like the amazing bovine athletes they are. The two things that are most important are nutrition and how you handle them.” “My bulls are all pets,” Matt admitted. “I pretty much live with these bulls 24/7. I haul them and flank them and take care of them. They are like my kids. Some of them are very docile. They have learned to trust me and they know I’m not going to hurt them. They actually become pretty loving animals. I love each because of their quirky personalities.” “HyTest was the 2017 CBR Bull of the Year and has been to the

PBR World Finals four times,” Matt continued. “Now he is at the Wrangler NFR. He’s ten years old and like the family pet. When I started Phenom Genetics in 2007, I bought five heifers and a yearling bull, and HyTest was one of the calves from that first crop. He never gets worked up. He loves people but he hates other bulls. My daughter will ride him around bareback! He’s been that way since he was a baby. He’s never been sore or hurt. He just goes about his business. He gets really upset if he can’t go on the truck. He wants to go play rodeo. People need to see how happy that animal is to do his job.” “The PBR and the PRCA are two individual sports. Both have their place, but are totally different,” Matt said. “The PBR is very competitive and requires a lot of work for the contractor. The PRCA is competitive too, but it’s a little more laid back and not as much work for the contractors. This is my first year in the PRCA, and it’s unlike anything I have ever experienced. We take a lot of pride in being able to do both the PBR and the PRCA.” “The PRCA also gives me a better opportunity to develop some of our younger bulls,” Matt went on to explain. “Sometimes these bulls just need to get some outs under their belts. That’s where

The Sankey Pro Rodeo ranch is in Joliet, Montana. Sankey Pro Rodeo has won many awards over the years, including the prestigious Remuda Award in 2018, recognizing them as the predominant herd of bucking horses in the PRCA. Wade Sankey grew up in rodeo and is extremely passionate about western sports and rodeo. He really cares where the sport is headed. Cody Yates is Sankey Pro Rodeo’s man behind the scene, caring for the horses on the Montana ranch. While at the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas, Matt and Wade were interviewed by Matt West for his podcast “Matt West Now”. They shared that their long-term goal is to step out of the tiny rodeo box and make it better. “Once people come to the rodeo or bull riding, they realize who we are and what we are founded on: God and country. The explosive growth of this sport is because people are wanting that, and they are seeing it in the western lifestyle.” Matt and Wade invite you to join them on FaceBook and Instagram. @phenomgenetics and @ sankeyprorodeo.

the rodeo runs help us. Air Time’s son, Airborn, is a good example. I hauled him this summer in the PRCA and he developed enough to buck in the rank round at the PBR Finals. The PRCA has completed our program.” Matt calls Arlington, Minnesota home. It is on this small, 60 acre spread that Matt and his wife Kelly, have raised kids Lacey, Kameron, Kolten, Kiri, and a bunch of outstanding bucking bulls! Matt grew up on this farm, but early-on his passion was go-kart and car racing. He also owned his own mobile tool business until 2013. But his love for animals brought him into the bucking bull business. “Minnesota is not at all rodeo or bull riding country,” Matt disclosed. “People ask what we are doing here, and I just tell them this is home. This is where I grew up. This is where my base is. We have a couple of pastures that we farm. But our cows are all hay and grain fed 365 days a year. It is more expensive, but we have a really good nutrition program in place. Our man Cody Stinson is crucial to what we do. He is the backbone of the organization. He takes care of things when I am on the road.”

Sage Kimzey 6x World Champion Bull Rider By Phillip Kitts

As rodeo fans head home and nurse their recovery from 10 days of top rodeo action in Las Vegas, many of the top bull riders in the world will be doing the same thing. The 2019 PRCA version of the Super Bowl, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was one for the books. Nodding your head in the “Gold Chutes” is a dream of nearly every competitor in the sport of rodeo. Nearly every event saw huge accomplishments and individuals rise to the top. Getting to the NFR for the PRCA bull rider was no easy feat. Each year the NFR takes the top 15 money earners to the big show. The bottom-

line number to earn your spot in 2019 was well over $100,000.00 dollars’ worth of winning. On the last weekend of September, when the 2019 season officially came to a close, a lot of great bull riders rushed hard to get through those last few events with the hope that they could find themselves on the right side of the bubble and on their way to Vegas. When the final whistle blew, these 15 competitors had punched their ticket to NFR. Trey Kimzey Josh Frost Jordan Wacey Spears Clayton Sellars Trevor Kastner Garett Smith Daylon Swearingen Trey Benton III Koby Radley Jordan Hansen Jeff Askey Tyler Bingham Boudreaux Cambell Stetson Wright Sage Steele Kimzey Among this list of athletes, there are a couple who made their first appearance in the bright lights of Vegas. Trey Kimzey, from Strong City, Oklahoma, earned his first trip as well as Josh Frost, Randlett, Utah. Clayton Sellars from Stephenville, Texas made the finals in his

second year of competition, as well as Daylon Swearingen who made a loud bang this year in both the PRCA and PBR while qualifying for his first appearance in the Thomas and Mack arena. Last but certainly not least, there is history maker and NFR rookie, Stetson Wright, who not only made his first appearance at the NFR but did so while changing the face of rodeo. No matter if you are a rookie to this spectacular event or a veteran, it all comes down to the same thing; big money, big pressure, and big payouts. Round 1 Stetson Wright came out the gates on a mission and his

win with a 92.50 score made his first ride a memorable performance. In the second spot was a man who made a quiet push to the top of the world standings over the ten days. Boudreaux Campbell put on an impressive first round with a score of 92 points and a hefty second place check. Round 2 A familiar face at the top of the board as Garrett Smith put together a stellar 91.50 point ride to win the round and stake his claim to NFR money. In the second and third places were some familiar names who gave notice that they were not to be forgotten. Sage Steele Kimzey earned a second-place check while the name that you will hear a lot, Boudreaux Campbell, again finished in the top 3.

Round 3 Koby Radley owned the night with 92 points while the other 2 check winners were new to the top scores. Jordan Hansen and Trey Benton III both collected nicely for their 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Round 4 Some familiar names returned to the podium. Stetson Wright would lay claim to his second round win, which would start to give him some breathing room in the allaround race. For those who don’t know, Stetson Wright is also a world class saddle bronc rider. As a member of the Wright Family, it is to be expected that he can handle himself on bucking horses, but this young lad can get the job done on horses and bulls. During the 2019 season, he won enough money in both events that going into NFR he was in the lead for the World Championship All-Around buckle. Another familiar name made his way into the top three in round 4 as Trey Benton III managed a secondplace check while again Boudreaux Campbell finished in the top 3.

Round 5 Another new name to the NFR rose to the top. Daylon Swearingen laid claim to his first round win and the big check. This round win was just one more statement on an impressive 2019 season. Daylon won PBR Canada Finals, qualified for PBR World Finals, and in 2019 Daylon had put himself in position for the Bull Riding Triple Crown. The other top two for the round were Koby Radley with a strong showing for second place and in third place the reemergence of Sage Steele Kimzey collecting even more Vegas money. Round 6 By now the halfway point was starting to take a toll on cowboys, crew and stock. You would never know it by looking in the eyes at some of these stars, specifically Boudreaux Campbell who kept the pressure on what was already considered a great finals by winning the round with a 92.50 point ride. In the two spot was Jordan Wacey Spears who is an NFR veteran and as consistent as can be. In the third hole the familiar name Sage Steele Kimzey kept his

hunt on for another world title by collecting yet another NFR paycheck.

Round 9 By now the shot of a world title for anyone below the number one spot was gone but there was still lots of money to be made. Knowing that there was still a lot of money to be claimed, Boudreaux Campbell mashed the throttle on his 2019 NFR run. He did so by winning round 9 and adding to his already impressive collection of winnings. In the second spot, Daylon Swearingen made one more appearance on the leaderboard and Jordan Hansen collected himself a nice little third place check. (Continued on Page 37)

Round 7 Then it happened, it was not a matter of if Sage Kimzey would win a round, it was just a matter of when. In round 7 it happened, with 90 points he had done 2 things, he had won the round and his big check but also essentially closed the deal on taking home his 6th consecutive World Champion buckle. Not to be overshadowed, once again the familiar name of Boudreaux Campbell showed up as his second-place finish may have been topped by the win but, once again, Boudreaux was collecting money and making his way up the standings. In the third spot, Tyler Bingham

Round 8 He does it again, Sage Steele Kimzey used round 8 to put a big stamp on 2019. With another round win, he continues to line his pockets and lay claim to another gold buckle. Stetson Wright, who put in a second-place effort, not only collected more money in the bull riding but also added to his lead in the All-Around Cowboy race. There was a log jam in the third spot where Clayton Sellars earned his way to a payday along with, once again, the familiar name of Boudreaux Campbell. By now Boudreaux made it clear he was going to make a statement in Vegas.

daylon swearingen not your average rookie year By Barbara Pinnella

By now most bull riding fans have heard of Daylon Swearingen. If you attended any PBR or PRCA events this past season, you might have seen him competing up and down the road and recognized what a talent he is. But do you really know just how much he has accomplished during this rookie year? Let’s look at the start of his success this year. Daylon was the bull riding champion at the College National Finals Rodeo this past June. Swearingen attends Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas, and is studying Land and Ranch

Management. He chose this school mainly due to one of his mentors, Jeff Collins. Jeff is a coach for Panola, but the fact that he is the coach is not the main reason that Daylon chose Panola. “Jeff has a won the bareback riding in 2000 at the NFR. He has a great mentality and a great outlook on life, and that’s why I went there. And he has done something that I want to do.” Swearingen said that he has been living in Texas, then with a laugh changed that to living in the truck, as he has been

traveling up and down the road to rodeos. This talented 20-year-old won the PBR Canada Finals, and also made the PBR World Finals and the National Finals Rodeo this year. That is quite a list of accomplishments!

don’t want to let yourself down or anybody else down. So that definitely helps me. And if I get overwhelmed with things, there are a lot of people who help me get back to where I need to be.”

It took him a bit of time to make his first ride at the NFR, but he did so in a big fashion by winning Round 5 on Big Stone Rodeo, Inc.’s War Cry with a huge 92 points. He followed that up with a fourth-place finish in Round 6, and another 90 score in the ninth round to be second after covering Night Moves, owned by Calgary Stampede. Wise beyond his years, Daylon does not feel that it is hard for him to stay grounded.

His close family has been to both Finals with him, as has his girlfriend. There are other family members who would come and go as well, so he is well supported in that way. Knowing that his family is standing right there with him is definitely helpful for him.

“I feel that God gave me this talent and I just want to use it to the best of my ability. I set high goals this year and I expect to achieve them, and I feel that helps me get to where I want quicker. If you write down your goals and you look at them and keep up with them, you hold yourself accountable. You

Unlike most of his competitors, Swearingen did not spend his whole life in those ‘Western’ states like Texas. Instead, he grew up in New York. But he definitely came from a rodeo family. “Actually, my family has a rodeo company in New York,” he told us, “Rawhide Rodeo. I was born in North Carolina and moved to New York when I was eight or nine. My grandpa was a bareback rider, my mom was a trick rider, one uncle

Humps-Horns.com · 31 · January 2020

rode bulls, and my other uncle and dad rode them a little bit. I chose to ride bulls because I like raising them and just being around them. I enjoy everything about them.” Daylon said that he might want to do some bull breeding when he is finished with his bull riding career, and told us that he does have some cows now and put some embryos in this year. He enjoys that part of the business, but did acknowledge that while it is a fun business to be in, he knows it is also a tough occupation. As for the differences between the PBR and the PRCA, Daylon believes that it is harder to travel up and down the highway to qualify for the NFR. “It takes a lot more to get to the NFR because you have to travel your butt off all summer to get here. For the PBR, you have to ride good bulls, but you don’t have to kill yourself running up and down the road as much.” His favorite venue that he enjoyed the most in his first year on the PBR tour did not come in the form of an Unleash the Beast event, but rather a Velocity Tour event. He really liked the Happy Canyon Arena in Pendleton, Oregon.

“Pendleton has that name; it’s kind of old school, so I really liked it there, and it was a very good event.” He does not really have a favorite bull ride at this time, and joked that his favorite one is whichever one he stays on. But it was easy for him to say which bull he would like to get on, and he is not alone with his pick. “SweetPro’s Bruiser,” he said with no hesitation. “It has to be him, just because he’s coming to the end of his career and I’d like to get on him before his time’s up. That bull has won so much and is respected by so many it would be cool to get on him and ride him.” Not surprisingly, Swearingen does not have a lot of free time, but when he does, he likes being outside and spending time with his cows. Besides liking the outdoors, Daylon also works out quite a bit as well. He told us that he has quite a few heroes and takes bits and pieces from everyone. But he did mention some that are important to him.

“Jeff Collins has helped me a lot. My dad has also helped me a lot, as has Jerome Davis. And the main thing that they all have is a positive outlook on life. My mom has definitely helped me in so many ways. She took my brother and I to rodeos when we were growing up. I’ve definitely been blessed with great family and friends that surround me.”

Make sure to keep your eyes on this young man next year. He just might be the next big star in bull riding. He certainly made people sit up and take notice this year, and we expect nothing less than that in the future. Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine congratulates him on his accomplishments and wishes him all the best in the upcoming season.

(Continued from Page 29) Round 10 By this time the World Championship was decided and it was all about pride and cash. This inspired Jordan Hansen to end 2019 with a bang by winning the round. Sage Kimzey capped of his 2019 with a second-place finish and Tyler Bingham would collect one last top 3 check for the season. Just like that the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo’s ten rounds had come to an end. At the close, some very impressive things had transpired. Sage Steele Kimzey laid claim to his 6th world title and continued his goal to best Donnie Gay and win more than 8 World Titles.

The question is can he do it all in a row? After a stellar performance in Vegas, Boudreaux Campbell leaves with 2 round wins, 5 top three finishes culminating in $203,134.62 worth of winnings over the 10 rounds. Most of all, he leaves Vegas sitting number 2 in the final world standings. Not to be overshadowed, what just might be the most historic accomplishment in 2019, Stetson Wright held on over the ten performances to his lead in the race to be crowned as the All-Around Cowboy. He walks away from Las Vegas being the youngest All-Around Cowboy in the history of the PRCA and, for the first time since Ty Murray won the title 1998, the All-Around buckle made its way back to the rough stock end of the arena.

Western Wanderings hello, the camp! My horse was tethered for the night The campfire coals were hot My coffee brew was ready Beans simmered in the pot

We both sat down around the fire And he handed me his cup “My horse is tied out yonder,” He said, then he stood up

“Well,” I said and cleared my throat, “I guess I do just fine. I work real hard and do my job. This cowboy life is mine.”

I reflected on this cowboy life To ride my horse all day And camp at night beneath the stars It’s called the cowboy way

He stepped on over to the fire And gazed into the pot “I’d likely give a month’s wages For a plate of them beans, nice and hot”

“I’m talkin bout your purpose, There’s a reason why you’re here. The Range Boss made you a cowboy.” He answered very clear

As I sat there with my coffee Enjoying what I do I heard a rustling in the brush And a man came into view

“They ain’t for sale,” I said to him, “but you’re welcome to have what you want You look like you could use it You look a little gaunt.”

“As you go about the cowboy life, Enjoying what you do Spend some time with the Range Boss He’d like talk to you.”

He stopped outside the firelight His manners cowboy right “Hello, the camp,” he softly called Awaiting my invite

So, he helped himself to a plate of beans And sat back down to eat I watched him wolf his dinner down It must have been a treat

“He wants you to know that He loves you So much that He gave his own Son. Who died to pay the price for your sin Then heaven can be your home.”

“Welcome friend,” I told him And he strolled right up to me “My name is Jess, young fella, Can I share your hot coffee?”

When he was done, we both sat back To enjoy our cowboy brew He looked at me and began to talk About the things he knew

“But there’s more than just gettin’ saved from hell

He was a real old cowboy Deep lines creased his face His hat was worn and tattered But he wore a peaceful grace

“Young fella, you’re a real good cook, And I thank you for my meal. So, while we sip our coffee I’d like to share what’s real”

There was a wild rag round his neck His coat was torn, and tattered His chaps were worn but still intact He looked to be life-battered

“Did you ever wonder why you’re here? And what you’re supposed to do? Or do you just go on day by day With no purpose in your stew?”

Son, He’s loaded you for bear He made you a real live cowboy With special gifts to share.”
