Letter from the Editor

It’s finally here! Bull riding fans around the world have been waiting for this all year. The PBR World Finals. And what a year it has been! It seems to me that we have thought the past few years were some of the closest races in the history of the PBR. Well, I think this year has to the closest that we have had the privilege to watch. That is true for both the bull riders and the bucking bulls. Jose Vitor Leme, Jess Lockwood, and Chase Outlaw have been battling all year. Every time one of them takes a step away from the pack, the others would rebound in the next week or so and reclaim their standing. The top three are all within a few hundred points of each other but there are a couple of men who still think they have a chance, as well. Joao Ricardo Vieira and Cooper Davis are still within striking distance depending upon how the remaining events shake out.

If you thought the bull riding race was tight, how about the bovine side of the sport. The top five bulls in the world championship race are all within .75 points of one another. These contenders will have two opportunities to buck in Vegas and add those two scores to their average for the year. Whether you prefer to cheer for the cowboys or the bulls, it should be an exciting week in Vegas! Talking “Bull” with Brayden

this season. The Volborg, Montana cowboy has the highest score which came aboard Heartbreak Kid for 93.75 points and he has 11 ninety plus point bull rides. Lockwood is a mere 300 points away from the world number one so be looking for a close title race. Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to talk about the top three PBR bull riders in the world. So let’s get into it. The number three bull rider in the world is Chase Outlaw. Chase has won four UTB events this season and the 15/15 bucking battle in Houston. The Hamburg Arkansas native has a 50 percent riding average and 11 ninety plus point bull rides this season. He also has the second highest marked bull ride this season which is 93.50 points on Smooth Wreck . Chase is only about 1,100 points from the world number one ranking. Chase has come along way from his almost career ending injury [in 2018] to the number three Cowboy in the world.

The number one bull rider in the world is Jose Vitor Leme. Jose has 16 ninety plus point rides which is the most this year. He has a 57 percent riding average and won four UTB events. He has 16 round wins which is the most this year and surprisingly has only won two 15/15 bucking battles this season.....But has had multiple rides in the 15/15 format. The Sao Paulo Brazil bull rider now lives in Decatur Texas, but as long as he has lived here he has been outstanding. Any of these guys could be your World Champion so be looking for them. The number two bull rider in the worlds is Jess Lockwood. Jess has won four UTB events and four 15/15 Bucking Battles this season. Jess has a 63 percent riding average which is the highest in the PBR. You may ask with a ride percentage that high why is he not number one..... it’s because he had to sit out several events due to injury. He also holds the record for riding 8 out of 9 bulls in bucking battles

Talent Alone Equals Failure When it comes to the sport of rodeo, any event talent is only a small portion of the equation. Structure, discipline and a strong work ethic are necessary for great success no matter how much talent one has. You have no say in the amount of natural talent you have but the other three are totally your choice.

I’ve seen several very talented guys come along with one or more of the other three ingredients missing and they may have had some success but they definitely left some things on the table. On the other hand I’ve seen some with very little talent but the other three ingredients were very strong in them and they went on to be successful. Take a good look and be real honest with yourself about your structure, your discipline, and your work ethic. I hope you choose the necessary ingredients toward your career. No one can do it for you. Study and Practice There are very few areas of expertise achieved by men apart from diligent study and practice. Olympic athletes and other individuals considered to be at the peak of physical human ability are not born that way. They have a regime they have followed, and most of them practice, and practice, and practice, devoting hours a day to improving themselves. Our physicians and surgeons are not considered competent to take us apart and put us back together again without first undergoing years of study and training. There are many more examples that could be given. There are not many activities where constant practice does not improve ability. And there are few activities where, with enough practice, most people can not achieve some competence. Generally, when an individual says, “I could never do that,” what they really mean is that they don’t want to spend the time and energy to learn how to do a thing. Sometimes such thinking is borne out of fear, but if we were to be honest with ourselves, frequently it’s just laziness or a lack of proper motivation on our part. Why should we think that it is any different in matters of spiritual achievement? The Bible reminds us concerning spiritual ability, maturity, and our ability to understand the Bible: “For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:13-14; NKJV).” Let us first notice that it is possible to be “unskilled” in God’s word; implying that it is fully possible to be “skilled.” This skill is achieved, not through the passage of time, but through, “reason of use,” and, “exercising” the senses to discern good and evil. In other words, spiritual ability and spiritual talents get better with practice and exercise, just like any other skill.

Have you considered the fact that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, made like us in every way, and partaking of the full human experience, had to study to get better with God’s word? We find Him engaged in a Bible study at the age of 12, and when found doing so, He identified the study as His Father’s will (cf. Luke 2:46-49). Thereafter we read that Jesus, “increased in Wisdom and Stature (Luke 2:52).” Jesus grew to be a wise man, because, from a very young age, He applied Himself to obtaining that wisdom. He became good at doing the right thing because he practiced constantly doing the right thing, so that He could say of His relationship with God, “I always do those things that please Him.” (John 8:29) But someone will say, “Well Jesus was God in the flesh, I could never be like Him.” As in so many other things, however, such a statement is more of an excuse not to try than it is a valid argument. God wants us to try to be more like Jesus. The term “Christian” means, “Christ-like.” The Scriptures encourage us, telling us that we should look to the example of Jesus as our model for love, forgiveness and many other things (cf. Ephesians 5:2; 1 Peter 2:21; etc.) In fact, God very clearly tells us in His word that the goal is to grow spiritually, to reach the measure of the fullness of the stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). You might want to declare that you can’t grow spiritually, but God says you can, and that you should, even if such an endeavor is going to take effort on your part. Sure, chances are pretty good that if you begin the process of spiritual growth, at some point you are going to falter. But it is only when we stop practicing that we stop improving. Don’t sell yourself short. God sees great potential in you. Don’t let laziness, fear, or indifference prevent you from achieving that potential. It takes practice, but the more you practice, the easier it gets. Beef Stew INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

¼ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon ground pepper 1 pound beef stew meat, cut into inch cubes 5 teaspoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 cup red wine 3 ½ cups beef broth 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped 5 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch pieces • 2 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes • 2 teaspoons salt

1. Combine the flour and pepper in a bowl, add the beef and toss to coat well. Heat 3 teaspoons of the oil in a large pot. Add the beef a few pieces at a time; do not overcrowd. Cook, turning the pieces until beef is browned on all sides, about 5 minutes per batch; add more oil as needed between batches. 2. Remove the beef from the pot and add the vinegar and wine. Cook over medium-high heat, scraping the pan with a wooden spoon to loosen any browned bits. Add the beef, beef broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a slow simmer. 3. Cover and cook, skimming broth from time to time, until the beef is tender, about 1 1/2 hours. Add the onions and carrots and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Add the potatoes and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes more. Add broth or water if the stew is dry. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle among 4 bowls and serve.

Outside the Arena with...

The American Heritage Competition for yearling and two year olds is like the Super Bowl or World Series for the bucking bull industry. Approximately 400 bulls brought by contractors show up to compete in Duncan, Oklahoma in early June. The winnings are very lucrative (the futurity champion wins approximately $75,000100,000). But more important than that, it establishes credibility in the breeding program for that stock contractor. In addition to the competition, it is a fun way for a family to spend two days. The contractors bring their families but also the Duncan citizens attend the event. This is the work of one man: Jim McLain, Jr. He is the producer and is in charge of the event. He supervises and plans it all. And due to his efforts it runs like a well-oiled machine. If anyone is producing an event or thinking about it, I would suggest going to Duncan and seeing how it is done right. This is in addition to his other business interests. I have met Jim at various events. He always has a smile on his face and a kind word and I do not think he knows a stranger.

Tell us about yourself I was born and raised in Duncan, Oklahoma. I am married to Lesli. I have one daughter Tiffany and four grandchildren, Jacobe, Kynlee, Tenlea, and Caysen. We live in Stephens County, OK. I went to a country school and then we moved into the city and I graduated from high school. My first job when I was around 11 was selling Grit Seeds which made packets of vegetable and flower seeds. Most kids have a paper route. I sold seeds. I have pretty much worked for myself my entire life except for two years in high school, and a couple of years after where I worked as a welder. Then again when I worked with Miller Lite as an independent contractor. My getting into the bucking bull business was an evolution over many years.

I tried to rodeo riding bulls. Believe me nobody was scared when I entered that I was going to take winnings away from them. I rode in junior high and high school. I learned from the school of hard knocks. In 1981, I got on 159 bulls and rode 53. At that time, you couldn’t make money riding only 1/3 of your bulls. In 1980, a friend of mine and I were talked into being the rodeo clowns with his uncle who was a rodeo clown. We were volunteers at first, then we got hired for the next rodeo. So when I first started, I would be the rodeo clown/bullfighter and then ride bulls at the event too. I started bull fighting and bull riding and the word spread and I got calls from other rodeo contractors. I met Rex Dunn and

Ted Kimzey who were professional Rodeo Clown/Bull Fighters. They helped me learn how to fight bulls and taught me the art of comedy and the importance of carrying good acts. I fought bulls for 23 years. What had the most influence on you as you matured? Miller Lite had a commercial at the time where they used featured retired athletes from various sports. They wanted to do one for the younger crowd and Jim Shoulders suggested me as the cowboy. At this time there were not corporate sponsors as there are now. They flew me up to Milwaukee for all types of intense media training. How to interview, how to sell the product but doing it as more like a conversation. It opened my eyes to the corporate world. Whether it was beer or rodeo tickets, it taught me how to present myself as a representative of their Miller Brewing Co. to local rodeo committees and develop business plans that helped them with corporate sponsors. This experience gave me an opportunity to meet all these star athletes. I also did not realize that Jim Shoulders was larger than just rodeo. These pro athletes would sit around him in the evening just to hear his stories and because I was with him, I was accepted by them, too. It taught me how to help rodeo committees market their event. I also would get the local distributor of Miller Lite involved and develop action plans that cross promoted the events and Miller Lite. I worked with Miller Brewing Co. for 15 years, first as an endorsee, then the final 10 years as the Administrator of Rodeo Marketing for the State of Texas. In 1986, I started producing bull fighting competitions and then went on to develop and produce the Miller Lite Bullfighting Tour, that evolved into the PBF (Professional Bull Fighters) from 19932013. In 2004, TwoBulls Productions (now TwoBulls Group) was formed and we started producing ABBI/PBR sanctioned events. I have been a bull competition producer for 15 years. How did you get into raising bucking bulls and competition? My high school friend, Brent Bullard, and I decided to get into the bucking bull business in 1996. We started with females from Ronnie Roach, a well-known breeder of bucking bulls. We wanted to raise our own bucking bulls that both bucked and fought.

So we started with 10 that turned into a major operation with over 150 head of bucking bulls and 200 head of cows. A few years after starting our breeding program, a new concept was introduced to us in the form of Bucking Bull Competitions. Bob Tallman held a bull futurity event (for two year olds). The winner would receive $25,000 but would have to give up their bull. Then everyone who entered was put into a reverse raffle drawing for the bull. As the event progressed, names were drawn and when drawn, your name was off the board until there was only one name left and that person won the Champion Bull of the event. Every participant that entered also received 10 straws of the Champion bull as well. To this day, I hope to be able to contribute a smidgeon to our industry of what Bob Tallman did when he started the registry and competitions. How did you become the producer of the prestigious American Heritage event? What does this entail? The original Heritage was first in Ardmore, OK, then moved to the Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, OK. After several years, the ABBI was ready for a change. The event needed a community with a lot of local support, and lodging accommodations. I spent quite a bit of time with our County Commissioners, Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau and city of Duncan preparing a proposal to draw the event to Duncan. Jay Daugherty, the incoming Executive Director along with ABBI’s Board of Directors decided it would be a good fit to move it to

Duncan. Duncan had a first class facility, along with plenty of hotels and restaurants and is centrally located. For the past five years I have produced the American Heritage and have agreed to continue to produce it through 2022.

Logistics is the hardest thing. There is lots of coordination to stay on schedule. We try to buck 33 bulls per hour. This year in the yearling class we were pushing 50 per hour. It takes a lot of coordinating and right team of guys to make it flow like that.

A producer makes the event happen. Selects who needs to be hired and does all the planning and logistics. I wanted a home town family atmosphere. The Duncan community immediately got on board to make the competitors and the livestock welcome. The Duncan Convention and Visitors Bureau has worked diligently with us. Approximately 400 bulls compete in the yearling and futurity event, and the annual D&H Yearling sale brings another 100+ bulls to make a 500 bull weekend. The County Commissioners have been very supportive and recently approved purchasing 150 more pens and expanding the bull barn by 60,000 square feet. This is a huge plus in that we will soon be able to house over 500 bulls under one roof. There is a lot behind the scenes that happens to keep the local gears turning and preparing for the future of the Heritage as it makes it home in Duncan for the next three years.

You talk about it being a family event. What do you have to keep the kids entertained for two days?

I wanted the event to be the best. Competitors want a well-run event. I want the experience to be more than just bucking bulls. I want it to be a time for friends and family to come and enjoy our sport together. We start planning the next Heritage the day after the last one ends. We look at what worked, what didn’t and what could be improved. There is a lot to be done and every person that works with us is an integral part of our team. You need a production team for the front of house, announcing, sound, video, and technical support. You have a back of house supervisor that is in charge of the chutes and everyone in the bull pens and moving the cattle back and forth so the ones that are competing are brought up and then moved back to the pens for the next group. You have support personnel to arrange caterers and feeding everyone. It takes a dedicated team with all of logistics that are required. Our team is always working to make it better.

This is the hardest thing to do. Keeping the kids entertained while the parents are watching the competition. The Stephens County Expo is huge. The competition arena does not take up much room so there is plenty of space for the older kids to toss around a football or practice their rodeo skills. For the smaller children I fenced off an area right next to the bleachers and filled it with a sand mountain [see picture below]. We bury about $100 in nickels for them to dig and find. I replenish and rework the sand again for the next day. It keeps them busy all day and since it is next to the bleachers, they under their parent’s eye. When the nickels are pretty well gone they have their buckets and can play in the sand. We want to make it a family event so people enjoy coming. Some bring their dogs! How are the bulls selected? The stock contractors start paying entry fees almost two years prior to the event in periodic payments. When the bulls are 6 months old, they are chosen so it is strictly based on pedigree. Then when the bulls are two years old, they come to the event. Even though you do not have riders, many events have a safety man to get the bulls out of the arena. You do not. Why? I am probably the only producer that does not have a horseman in the arena. I have one ready but not in the arena. These are very young bulls, and many have never even seen a horse, much less been pressed by one to leave the arena. Many have only been bucked at the ranch with no one in the arena. They come to an event with people and noise. Then they go out to buck and here is this strange animal in the pen. They are already a little stressed not being at home, but a horse sometimes put them in a fight or flight mode. Most bulls will leave the pen without any prompting as they have trained to do at home. I don’t want to add any more stress and find having the horseman in the arena while they buck slows down the process of a smooth show. You have one other business that is tied to the industry. Tell us how TwoBulls ProFormance Feeds came to be. Prior to TwoBulls, bulls were fed just feed. If they are on the road, they got what was available locally. We noticed that nutrition enhanced the ability of the bull to buck.

My partner and I realized the importance of nutrition back when there were no nutrition programs. We talked with different feed companies but no one had performance feed for bulls. So we went about finding a nutritionist and feed plant to develop our own performance feed. Our goal was never to sell feed only to use it for our bulls. People noticed our bulls and wanted to buy it to help their bulls. Thus TwoBulls Performance Feeds was formed. I remember talking to a local feed store about our product and he showed me that rather than feed, a supplement would be better suited to fit the various feeds that were being fed depending on what was available to the breeder locally. So we set about developing and producing a supplement that would enhance anybody’s feed. TwoBulls is a multifaceted company that evolves from my 23year career as a Professional Bullfighter. Innovative in design, TwoBulls serves niche markets with products and services that provide fulfillment to specific consumer needs. It is founded on the principles of providing reliability in products, and responsibility in work, TwoBulls is dedicated to the ethic that “You Cannot Negotiate Quality”. We marketed it by word of mouth. We tracked the bulls that were winning who were on our supplement. To date those bulls have made over $25 million in winnings since we started. We marketed it by the performance of the bulls that were on our product. As the business built up we produced other products such as one for stress when they are traveling and a high heat supplement that will cool them down when they are at an event and is 100+ degrees in the pen. Every product we develop has a specific purpose and need within our industry. I remember when Kent Cox brought a bull named Bushwhacker to one of our early events. He was just a two-year-old, nothing fancy, but Kent felt he was special. We developed custom supplements for Bushwhacker that he is still on today. There are plans to have heifers also compete with the bulls? How will this work and what are your thoughts on this? First, the bucking will only be for yearlings and no other age group. The biggest problem in the bucking bull industry is how to develop value in young females. Up to now, it has only been based on the bloodlines. Approximately 50% of the calves in a given year are female. The only ones that bring money is if their daddy was a superstar such as Bruiser, Shane or a Bushwhacker. No matter how well they look on paper, many end up in the sale barn. With the young female market being flat, it’s hard to continue to feed them and keep them until they have a calf that is competitive possibly 4-5 years down the road. And that logistic alone can mean ½ of your herd is not marketable as a yearling.

Any breeding program wants the daughter to be better than the mother. But the time it takes to find out if they are better, is the cause many people are leaving the business. At some point it becomes cost prohibitive to keep many females waiting to see if their calves are top performers. If we start bucking the heifers with the bulls at the yearling stage and you have heifers that buck, you can use that as a tool to cull the herd. If she bucks and is competitive, you would likely keep her and her mother. It also would add value to that animal. Instead of being worth $500, she might now be worth $5,000, or $50,000. In many other western sports, the females compete against the males. (racing, cutting horses, etc.) The yearling heifer and bulls at this age are about the same size. You feed her the same performance feed you do your bulls. She is treated the same. They have had heifer yearling events and you might get 20 competitors. But if it is for bulls and heifers alike you could get 150 entries and the winnings will be increased. It does mean more work in hauling them and having separate pens but if would be worth it if it increases her value. I believe the heifers will blow out the bulls early on as they are just so much more exciting to watch. If she bucks, then she is worth money to sell or to keep with your breeding program. At the end of the day my whole life has and will continue to revolve around bucking bulls, and cattle. This is where my company name TwoBulls was derived from. The TwoBulls Symbol represents the Courage, Strength, and Stamina of two great animal athletes, the “Bucking Bull and Fighting Bull” which are at times one and the same, a mirror image of each other.

Once again, we head into the PBR World Finals with the competition for the PBR/Yeti World Champion Bull very close and up for grabs. This year, it appears to be a head-to-head contest between two of the PBR’s best known stock contractors. Eight-time and reigning PBR Stock Contractor of the Year, Chad Berger, has the current top ranked bull, 001 Smooth Operator and the number two ranked bull, 28A Smooth Wreck. Six-time PBR Stock Contractors of the Year, Dillon and H.D. Page of D&H Cattle Company, hold the next three spots with third ranked 23B Fearless, fourth ranked reigning and consecutive three-time PBR World Champion 32Y SweetPros Bruiser, and fifth ranked 362A Heartbreak Kid to round out the top five.

Each of these amazing bovine athletes bring something unique and different to the championship contest. Cody Teel hung on for eight seconds and a 91.75 score at the Last Cowboy Standing held at the Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. Smooth Operator had a bull score of 44.75.

Chase also rode him and won the Last Cowboy Standing event at the Cheyenne Frontier Days with a score of 93.5 in July. Smooth Wreck had a bull score of 46.25.

“I hope Smooth Operator wins it,” Chad Berger shared. “He is nine years old now, and I’ve had him since he was five years old. He is the rankest bull I have ever flanked. A while back he was out for over a year with an injury. We brought him back slowly. It took him a while to get back to form. But he’s bucking great now.”

“Smooth Wreck had a couple of bad outs, so he didn’t buck in Minneapolis,” Chad said. “As of right now, I’m planning to take him to Nampa in a couple of weeks. He’s six years old and not real docile. He’s pretty leery of people.”

Last week at the PBR UTB event in Minneapolis, PBR Bullfighter Shorty Gorham said during the 15/15 Bucking Battle on CBS Sports, “If he goes 45 points or more, Cody Lambert says he thinks that Smooth Operator will win the championship.” Two-time PBR World Champion Bull Rider and CBS Sports commentator Justin McBride added a comment about Smooth Operator in Minneapolis, “I think you’re looking at the next World Champion Bull.” SMOOTH WRECK Current World Average: 45.66 Smooth Wreck is the number two ranked bull. FEARLESS Current World Average: 45.56 Fearless is the number three ranked bull. He is owned by Dillon and HD Page of D&H Cattle Company. He has an average ride score of 89.69 and an 88.57% buck off percentage. Fearless was ridden by PBR UTB Rookie of the Year contender Dalton Kasel in Nashville in August for 92 points. Fearless had a 45.75 bull score. Matt Triplett was able to stay on board for 90 points in Springfield in September. Fearless had a bull score of 44 points. “Fearless is laid back, gentle and good natured,” HD explained. “But I haven’t seen 10 other bulls in my lifetime with his natural athletic ability. Statistically, he could top the charts in every category. He has so much ability, I think that he has a legitimate shot at the championship. But he has a little lazy streak in him. Sometimes he just puts it on autopilot until he decides to buck somebody off. But when he decides to turn it up, he really can!”

SWEETPRO’S BRUISER Current World Average: 45.38 Bruiser is the reigning and three-time consecutive PBR World Champion Bull and is in fourth place. Bruiser is trying for an unprecedented fourth title, as well as a fourth consecutive title. He is owned by D&H Cattle Company and Jirl Buck. He has an average ride score of 91.93 and a 78.81% buck off percentage. He last bucked in Nashville in August, where PBR UTB rookie Dalton Kasel was dumped in 7.70 seconds and Bruiser had a bull score of 45.75. Cody Jesus rode Bruiser to the buzzer in Tulsa, Oklahoma in August for a score of 90.25. Bruiser’s bull

score was 44 points. “Bruiser has been sick,” HD revealed when I asked why Bruiser has not bucked since Nashville in August. “He had some kind of an impaction. It took us two weeks to get him back on the mend. He’s lost a little weight and some muscle, but he’ll be ready for the Finals. We won’t buck him before that. Smooth Operator is in the best position right now to win the championship. But there are a lot of variables that must fall into place. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

A couple of years ago, Yeti and Rabbit Foot Films made a short film about HD Page titled “Try and Love”. In it, two-time PBR World Champion JB Mauney said this about Bruiser. “He just stands there (in the chute). He doesn’t try to wreck you out, he doesn’t mash on you, he doesn’t try to cheat you in any way. But when you nod your head, you better have your hammer cocked, because here he comes!” HEARTBREAK KID Current World Average: 45.06 Heartbreak Kid is in fifth place and is owned by D&H Cattle Company. He has an average ride score of 75, and a lifetime 98.48% buck off percentage. For the 2019 season, he has bucked off 100% of the riders he has faced. Heartbreak Kid is just five buck-offs away from tying Bushwacker’s record of 42 consecutive buck-offs. He currently has 37 buck-offs at the PBR Unleash the Beast level, which is second overall in the history of the PBR. He dumped PBR World Champion Cooper Davis in 3.04 seconds in the Last Cowboy Standing at the Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. His bull score was 45.25. He also bested Claudio Montanha Jr. in 2.01 seconds in Nashville this August, for a bull score of 45.00 points. “Heartbreak Kid has the physical ability to do anything,” HD said. “He’s such a natural athlete, and he’s got the ability. His bucking style is somewhat subdued sometimes, and I think the scores on him are a little lower because of that. The moves he makes are really impressive. He has outs where he breaks over and kicks so hard and so high that it just makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up! As far as the consecutive buck off

record, I believe that any bull can be ridden. We’ll just have to wait and see how tough he makes it on the riders. Also, I have decided to switch Heartbreak Kid to a left-handed delivery this weekend in Greensboro. If he does well, we’ll stay on the left.” There you have the top five bulls contending for the 2019 PBR/ Yeti World Bull Championship. Chad Berger summed it up well. “I wish the best for my bulls. I hope they do well.” HD Page said, “The average is a little misleading. I will need a couple of really good scores that are better than the other bulls to have a shot at the championship. We try to get our bulls in the best position to go to the Finals. We will see what happens then.” Editor’s Note: Heartbreak Kid had quite a performance in Greensboro! Just before this issue went to print, he earned a bull score of 45.75 when he dumped Shay Marks in 2.22 seconds in round one. Then he scored a career high bull score of 46.25 in the championship round with Jess Lockwood and won the Yeti High Marked Bull of the event. Jess Lockwood snapped the streak of buck-offs at 38 when he rode him for 93.75 points in the Championship Round (see photo on page 24-25). As of this writing there are only four more events remaining in this 2019 PBR season; two Velocity Tour events and two for the Unleash the Beast Tour. This has been a great year in bull riding, probably as good a one as we have seen in a very long time. There have been surprises on both ends of the scale, but one thing seems certain – it will be one heck of a week in Las Vegas!

Going into the Anaheim event in September, it was Lockwood who stood at the top. When the men packed up their spurs to head home, however, Leme went a perfect 3-3 and had grabbed that number one slot away from Jess. Two years ago, and after going 6-6, Jose was the PBR Finals event winner, as well as their Rookie of the Year. While thrilled with those accomplishments, his eyes are now set on becoming the World Champion.

Back a few months ago when the men had their summer break from the UTB tour, the top four were Jose Vitor Leme, Jess Lockwood, Chase Outlaw, and Joao Ricardo Vieira. It seems crazy that, even though the order has bounced around a bit, at this point in the year they stand in that same order. Lockwood and Outlaw have also found themselves in the number one spot before Leme took control.

Lockwood has already tasted that victory. The same year Leme was Rookie of the Year, Jess, who was 20 years of age, climbed the mountain that led him to his World title, which made him the youngest man to do so. He has commanded the standings already this season and would love to make his move at just the right time to win that buckle again.

Chase fought his way into the lead for the UTB tour and briefly stayed there until August, when he was overtaken by Lockwood. While currently 1139 points off of the lead, any bull riding fan knows just how mentally and physically tough Outlaw is. To write him off would be a huge mistake, and his last year on the tour would prove that to be true. Vieira is also still in the hunt. Even though he is sitting in fourth, JRV is having a great season. The oldest of the top four, well heck, the oldest in the top 30, Joao is far from just sitting on the porch watching the youngsters grab all the glory. It is still numerically possible, though not probable, for him to win it all, but just to see him riding well and having fun is great for the fans.

Chase Outlaw

Rounding out that top 10, again, as of this writing, are 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis, Cody Teel, Derek Kolbaba, Marco Eguchi, Luciano De Castro, and rookie Dalton Kasel. It will be interesting to see just how these men jockey around for their final positions. And since I mentioned Kasel, he just took over the lead in the Rookie of the Year race, slipping ahead of Ezekiel Mitchell by a mere 121.25 points. Sitting in third is one of the De Souza twins, Alisson, with Daylon Swearingen sitting in fourth. Some of the men that we always expect to see at the Finals might not be able to make an appearance due to injury. Unfortunately, one of those that we will definitely not get to watch ride is the three-time World Champion Silvano Alves. Alves had a bad wreck in Springfield in September, and suffered a ruptured kidney. He will miss action anywhere from three to six months. In August, three others got bitten by the injury bug. It has been no secret that J.B. Mauney has been plagued with physical issues for some time now, and he was crunched again in Houston. But he has been working smarter and giving his body a bit of time to heal, something that he at one time would not even consider. At this point it seems as if he will be making his 14th appearance in Las Vegas, although it will not be way up the standings as we are so used to seeing. Still, when his music hits, those fans will go crazy as they always do over Mauney. Ryan Dirteater got hurt August 11th, when he was kicked by his bull in the Championship Round in Tulsa. He suffered some very painful and serious injuries; a collapsed lung, multiple

broken ribs, and a lacerated liver. He is expected to be out three months, which would seem to make another Finals appearance for the Cherokee Kid very difficult. And Joe Frost suffered a broken right tibia when he was stepped on by his re-ride bull in Houston. He had to have surgery, and is questionable for the Finals. There is a hot race for the Bucking Bull of the Year as well. Only .75 world average points separate the top five bulls. In order, the bull power has the Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/ Chad Berger bull, Smooth Operator on top. Next is another Berger bull, this time with partners Dakota Rodeo/Clay Struve/ Diamond Willow, Smooth Wreck. In third is D&H Cattle Co/ Buck Cattle Co/Tommy Julian’s Fearless, fourth is the great Sweet Pros Bruiser, owned by D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co, and in that fifth spot is D&H Cattle/Buck Cattle/Erwin Cattle’s Heartbreak Kid. With these great bulls to match up with our super riders this event just has to be an exciting one. All of the races could and probably will come down to the final day. Hope you have your tickets. If not, be sure to find it on your television or on Ridepass and watch. I sure don’t think anyone will be disappointed!
