Letter from the Editor

Greetings! I hope this issue of Humps N Horns finds all going well for you and your family. It seems like I mention every month how fast the time is flying by, but it really hits home this month when you realize that we are beginning the month of October and 2017 will have come and gone before we know it. Nonetheless, there is still plenty of bull riding to be done before the year is gone. The PBR world champion race is shaping up to be quite a doozy as we lead up to the finals in Las Vegas next month. The top four cowboys (Kaique Pacheco, Jess Lockwood, Eduardo Aparecido, Cooper Davis) in the world standings are only separated by about 200 points. The last few weeks of the season could be a real shootout. We get an up close and personal look at the 2012 PRCA World Champion, Cody Teel and his wife Kaitlin, in this issue. Cody has had a lot of success in professional rodeo but decided to make the move to the PBR tour this year. Teel has continued his winning ways and is currently leading the race for PBR rookie of the year and is sitting in 11th place for the world standings. We also get to meet the second partner in the Gene Owen / Jane Clark duo and learn more about her journey from the world of equestrian events into the bucking bull industry. The ABBI has also introduced another opportunity for breeders and stock contractors to showcase their animal athletes and win more money in the process. Kelly Robbins provides more information for those who may be interested in registering bull calves in this new program.

Reader Spotlight

Ivan and Leta Frost Ivan & Leta Frost were both born and raised on Kansas farms/ranches. Today, they are semi retired & have rented their farm ground and pastures to their son and son-in-law. The Frosts have 2 daughters and one son. Leta has been “horse minded” all of her life as she started riding at the age of 3 and started showing by the time she was 5 years old. She and her parents traveled many, many miles with their horses, winning state and national championships & she continued showing for several years after getting married. Leta

and Ivan still have registered Quarter Horses. The first Built Ford Tough event that they attended was 11 years ago in Oklahoma City & the following year they became what the PBR called “Toughest” members. Since then, they usually go to 8 or so Built Ford Tough Events, several Touring Pro, the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas and many PRCA rodeos. The Frosts are proud & avid supporters of Rider Relief. Over the years, Ivan & Leta have made many PBR & bull rider friends and consider them “family”. The Frosts will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at the PBR World Finals this year!!

Father’s Love and the Bible If you have access to a Bible and can read, I suggest that you spend some time reading it. It’s for your own good so you can gain some insight on how the Kingdom is lived out. Anything we go after in life requires time spent in understanding principles and gaining foundation that has value for us. Don’t just do it because someone “more spiritual than you” said the Bible is the only way to get to really know the Father. Do it because you wish to enhance what you already know of Him.

His thoughts will not change toward you if you don’t read the Bible. If you don’t, you’ll just miss the fullness of what He has for your life, but His love has nothing to do with your knowledge or zeal or even lack of zeal for Him. He Loves You with no strings attached. The full effect of what His love will do in you comes only after you come into agreement with Him about who you are to Him in your heart and spirit (the deepest part of yourself ) to His Spirit of Love.

When I was young I spent a lot of time with my dad. Experience was how I got to know him for myself. I heard stories from others, as to their experience with him, which gave me greater insight to his character. With both methods at work, I was able to get a clear picture of who my dad was. My dad’s love for me was very clear to me from time with him. If I had only heard or read stories about how he loved me, I would have never known how to love him back. Both had value but the stories only enhanced what I knew through experience.

Jesus Loves You! Cody Custer

Read your Bible or not. It’s up to you. I think it would be foolish not to but whether you do or not has no bearing on how much the Father loves you. He can’t love you anymore than He did before the Bible was even written so not reading it doesn’t change who He is. Whether you know it or not, there is already a relationship designed for you by and with the God of all creation.

Most of us have experienced a muscle cramp at one time. In fact, 95% of people deal with them. Whether it is caused by poor circulation, dietary imbalances, dehydration, or a side effect from medication, all muscle cramps have one thing in common: They are no fun! Muscle cramps occur when one or more muscles begin to involuntarily and suddenly contract. They can last anywhere between a few seconds to half an hour! But what can we do to prevent, treat, and avoid these unpleasant, prolonged spasms? Good question! Stretch It Out Adapting to a regular stretching regime is key to avoiding muscle cramps, especially when exercising or performing intense physical labor. It is recommended to stretch before and after physical activity, as well as to schedule in a warm up beforehand and a cool down afterwards. The role of stretching is to increase your range of motion, lengthen your muscles, and prepare them for the voluntary contractions that are needed to move around. It is quite common

to experience cramps during rest periods. If you experience muscle cramps in bed, take a few minutes to stretch the muscles that experience the cramps before settling in to sleep. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Drinking plenty of hydrating fluids throughout the day is both a preventative measure, as well as a treatment for muscle cramps. Dehydration can cause abnormal muscle contractions, or twitches. These twitches can very easily develop into muscle cramps if adequate fluid is not provided to the cells. So be sure to fill up your water bottle and carry it with you wherever you go.

Replenish Electrolytes Combating muscle cramps may not be as simple as drinking a little more water, it may also require you to pay attention to other nutrients that you may need. Electrolytes regulate the process of

Humps-Horns.com ¡ 10 ¡ October 2017

fluids moving in and out of our cells. Typically we are not at risk of disrupting this balance. However, in extreme heat, during vigorous exercise, or any time we are sweating, we are at risk of imbalance. Sodium and potassium in particular are predominating components of perspiration. To combat this, some sports drinks, in moderation, can be the answer. Please remember that many of these drinks may be loaded with sugars, so always take a look at the label beforehand. Massage the Affected Area Unfortunately, there are not too many ways to combat a muscle cramp after it has begun. However, lightly massaging the area that is in pain can help alleviate the issue by helping to relax the muscle. It is very important to remain calm, take a few deep breaths, and rub the cramping muscle gently in order to reverse the harsh contraction. You can massage the area with your fingers, fists, elbows, or even a tennis ball. Rub On Relief While oral medications are an option to combat the pain associated with muscle cramps, they can produce unwanted side effects. That’s where topical pain relievers come in. They are a proven, wellcontrolled pain relief option. Topical pain relievers can be prescribed by a doctor or bought over-the-counter. If you are looking to buy something at your local drug store, it is recommended to look for something that contains menthol or methyl salicylate, since the FDA recognizes them as pain-relieving topical agents. One word of caution: The FDA recommends finding a pain relief lotion that contains concentrations no greater than 3% of menthol and 10% of

methyl salicylate due to the risk of serious topical burn and skin irritations. This fact is why Real Time Pain Relief maintains low levels of menthol in each of their pain relief products. In Conclusion Although muscle cramps are a great annoyance and cause us discomfort, they are often not a harmful condition. Following the above recommendations can greatly decrease muscle cramps in most people. However, if you are experiencing severe muscle cramps or if they do not seem to go away, it is best to seek a medical professional. Published by Real Time Pain Relief

Space will not allow an exhaustive treatment of the origin and teachings of Gnosticism. However, its basic tenets were these: all things spiritual were wholly good, while all things material were wholly evil. Because God is spirit, he is unable to have physical contact with matter (since matter is evil). To create the world, then, God sent out emanations (spirit beings) from himself, each one more ignorant of and hostile to Him. Finally, one of these emanations was so far removed from God that he could make physical contact with evil matter. This emanation was responsible for the creation of the world.

by Keno Shrum

Identifying the Antichrist On page 181 of a book entitled World War III, John Wesley White writes, “The prime mover in the events that will march man into World War III will be the Anti-Christ...a terrible personification of evil who will work more wholesale havoc than any other human being in the history of the world.” White, Hal Lindsey (author of The Late Great Planet Earth, There’s a New World Coming, et al.) and other dispensational premillennialists have done their work well in convincing a religious, but biblically illiterate, “Christian” community that such a person as described above will indeed torment the world and hasten the start of the much-feared Battle of Armageddon. Let us examine these claims under the perfect light of God’s word. Antichrist in the Bible Following is every occurrence of “antichrist” in the Bible: * “Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour” (I John 2:18).

From these beliefs, two views of Jesus emerged: some Gnostics viewed him as one of the emanations that came from God. In this view, therefore, Jesus was not divine. Others among the Gnostics believed that he was divine, but never actually took upon himself human form. In fact it was impossible for him to become human, for humans are made of evil matter. To them, Jesus was merely a “phantom”. (Consult any standard Bible dictionary or encyclopedia for more information on Gnosticism.) If one compares the basic doctrines of Gnosticism with John’s description of the antichrists, one finds compelling similarities. There were many, not just one. They existed in John’s day. They were religious false teachers. They denied the humanity and/or the deity of Christ. Therefore, it is this writer’s conclusion that John was cautioning his readers to watch for those who brought with them some of these early Gnostic tendencies. The antichrist is not a political dictator that starts World War III. When John wrote of the antichrist, he was addressing something that his readers could and would recognize -- something that was a threat to them. Anyone who denies that Jesus is God’s Son, or the Messiah, or that he came in the flesh could rightly be called an antichrist. May we not be swayed or frightened by the voices of error as the vast reaches the religious community that seem to be working overtime to “draw away disciples after themselves” (Acts 20:30) by “wresting the scriptures to their own destruction” (II Peter 3:16). In His Love, Keno

* “Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son” (I John 2:22). * “And every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world” (I John 4:3). * “For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist” (II John 7). In my experience I have noticed that when most people discuss the antichrist they confine their discussions to wild misunderstandings of the imagery in the book of Revelation. Even when I have shown others the above passages, they scurry back to Revelation--a book that never uses the term! It is also interesting to note the glaring differences between the premillennialist’s description of the antichrist and the Bible’s description. (1) According to the Bible there were many antichrists, not just one. (2) Those antichrists already existed in John’s day, as opposed to being yet future to us. (3) These antichrists were false teachers in the church, not political dictators. (4) Anyone that denies that Jesus is the Christ, that He is the son of God, and/ or that he came in the flesh can rightly be called “antichrist”. Antichrists and Gnostics There is little doubt that John had some specific people in mind as he wrote, else he would not have warned the brethren as thoroughly as he did. John may well have been warning his readers about the early signs of a system of thought that would plague the church in the latter part of the first century and into the second. This doctrine would come to be known as Gnosticism.

SHORTY GORHAM By Kristian Limas

Being a television broadcaster can be tough. Looking into a camera and clearly making a point when you know that thousands, even millions, of people across the globe are watching your every move can be a little nerve-racking. Now, imagine having to get an angry bull away from a cowboy while doing it. For veteran bullfighter Shorty Gorham, he would rather focus on the bull in front of him instead of whoever may be watching on TV. As the lead on-dirt commentator for CBS Sports during the Built Ford Tough Series season, Gorham fills a unique role in sports broadcasting that cannot be seen anywhere else. Gorham provides live commentary on the field of play and very often may have to cut away in a millisecond to save a cowboy’s life. That kind of access and proximity to the action helps fans gain special insight into just how tough bull riders and the bullfighters that protect them really are. While he’s on the dirt, Gorham tries to give the viewer his perspective right at the moment before the gate opens. “I want to call it like I see it on the dirt right now,” Gorham said. “It’s what I’m seeing, and I think that’s what gives us a little different angle.”

Gorham has been one of the PBR’s premier bullfighters since joining the team in 2006. He is entering his 19th year as a professional bullfighter and has worked the National Finals Rodeo twice and was selected to work the Built Ford Tough World Finals each of the past 11 years. Gorham, along with his partners Frank Newsom, Jesse Byrne and Cody Webster, make up one of the hardest working teams in the PBR. His resume as a bullfighter is sterling, but his gig as a color commentator is a close second. Gorham is not the first bullfighter to wear a mic during the action, Rob Smets and Joe Baumgartner did it before him, but he is the one who has truly defined the special dual role he plays in the world of the PBR. The mic pretty much just fell into his hands. “Originally, Rob Smets did it a little bit, but it was a designated one-hit and they would just come through and ask him about a matchup,” Gorham said. “Then Joe Baumgartner did it. Then when Joe got hurt, I got the mic.” Gorham has since refined the format to something that works to his strengths. Previously, bullfighter commentary was more of a one-off hit that quickly fell into the background. Gorham prefers listening in to the conversation between lead play-by-play commentator Craig Hummer and the lead color commentator, which rotates between PBR legends like Ty Murray, Justin McBride and J.W. Hart. “They used to have three guys in the booth doing commentating and then they went to just two guys,” Gorham said. “After I did my part, I kept the earpiece in and listened to them. The next day I said, ‘Hey, that was really cool, you guys sounded good,’ and Ty Murray said, ‘So you mean at any point during the deal I can talk to you and you can hear it?’ and that’s kind of how it all started.” Gorham likes being part of the conversation and letting his commentary organically grow out of it. He doesn’t do a lot of prep work, but that’s not for lack of caring. He believes his independent view of the moment is what provides the most value to the audience.

Like anything, though, it took some practice to refine. Providing

commentary has become pretty natural for Gorham. What he needed to adjust to was the added inputs. Gorham is a bullfighter, first and foremost, and rider safety is always his main priority. So while wearing an earpiece and talking between outs is second nature to him now, it took some time to adjust to a second conversation going on in his ear while he works. “It’s a little different, but the hardest thing for me was the equilibrium because you got one competition going on in one ear and a different sound going in the other ear,” Gorham said. “That was hard for me, but they’re talking about bull riding. If they were talking about NASCAR and I’m out here bullfighting then it would be very distracting.” The adjustment didn’t take long for Gorham, who has learned to properly manage his safety responsibilities with his signature commentary. “It took a little while, maybe four or five events, before I felt comfortable and I could manage it the way I needed to manage it,” Gorham said.

It has been smooth sailing ever since, and his commentary has been a boon to the broadcast team. “Having him on the dirt isn’t just an asset, I think it really separates us as a sport,” Hummer said. “There’s literally no other sport that has a contributor on that level. He can see things that we absolutely can’t, so you combine that with his knowledge of the sport and it’s an

Humps-Horns.com · 17 · October 2017

integral part of our broadcast.”

strategy before you go in, you’re never going to go in.”

Gorham began fighting bulls when he was 14 years old.

Gorham relies on his instincts to guide him. His years of bullfighting experience means things like positioning and situational awareness are simply second nature to him. He doesn’t have to compartmentalize his dual roles either, there’s no difference between Shorty: the bullfighter, and Shorty: the commentator.

Being a bullfighter is equal parts thrill-seeking and selflessness. Gorham never loses sight of the fact that his primary job is ensuring the safety of a cowboy as best as he can. That often means jumping right into the danger and risking taking a hit to make sure a rider makes his way to safety. “You’re only scared when you’re not prepared for your job,” Gorham said. “I don’t want the bull to win, so I don’t even think of getting hooked. That whole time I’m watching that ride, watching the rider’s core, trying to figure out when and where he’s going to hit and when he goes it’s got to be just instincts.

He has evolved along with his job and has truly embraced the ability to give fans of the PBR a tiny glimpse into the bravery required to help a cowboy in need. Much like his bullfighting, Gorham’s role as a commentator has almost become second nature.

“And sometimes, after, you think ‘Oh, that was scary.’

It’s just another part of him that switches on once he gets on the dirt and the music plays.

Given the danger involved, Gorham believes that overthinking a situation is just about the worst thing a bullfighter can do. You have to go by feel and rely on your teammates because it’s completely possible to analyze so much that it will leave you paralyzed.

“Once they start playing the national anthem you turn off your brain and you turn on the adrenaline,” Gorham said. “I talk loud and I talk fast out there on the dirt and that’s the adrenaline, everything is rolling.”

“It’s fear, it’s life and death, it’s the first thing you have to manage if you want to be relatively decent at this job,” Gorham said. “For us, we basically have to go into a wreck, take care of the wreck, and then find a way to get the hell out of there. If you’re thinking of an exit

American Bucking Bull Incorporated (ABBI) is the world’s largest bucking bull organization. They record and preserve the pedigrees of the world’s premier bovine athletes of the “toughest sport on dirt.” Not only does this maintain the integrity of the bloodlines, but it also enhances the value of the bucking bulls. “ABBI maintains the world’s biggest bucking cattle DNA registry and holds competitive bucking events for bulls,” explained Susan Himes,

ABBI Senior Director of PR and Media. “Our goal is to increase the value of bucking cattle and their offspring through our ability to preserve bloodlines and prove pedigrees, and to make huge paydays possible through our sanctioned and co-sanctioned events.” “Competitive events for animals starting as yearlings allow stock contractors to begin earning money with their bucking bulls before they are old enough to compete against the cowboys,” Susan continued. “Yearlings and twoyear-olds buck at Futurities with a remote-controlled dummy (box) on their back.” ABBI is owned 50/50 between PBR (Professional Bull Riders) and a group of stock contractor share-holders. It is governed by a Board of Directors made up of PBR representatives and ABBI stock contractors. In 2003, PBR and a group of stock contractors, who understood the value of preserving bucking bull genetics, bought a DNA registry formerly called RSR (Rodeo Stock Registry). This database registry grew from 20,000 to 180,000 in just ten years. There are currently over 200,000 animals registered with ABBI.

Humps-Horns.com · 20 · October 2017

They also understood the importance of developing stand-alone events where the bulls would be judged solely on their bucking ability, regardless of how well the cowboy rode them. This has revolutionized the bucking bull industry. Before ABBI, the most a bucking bull could earn was $20,000 as the World Champion Bucking Bull. Now these bovine athletes can earn as much as $500,000 between their two and four year-old years, competing in ABBI events. ABBI currently holds the American Heritage Futurity each summer in Duncan, Oklahoma. The winner of this event takes home an average of $100,000. ABBI now introduces The Revolution! This new program will provide Futurity events for nominated animals throughout their two year-old year and will culminate in a Derby (and optional sale) when they are three. “The Revolution is similar to the American Heritage Futurity in that owners join into the program the year their animals are born,” Susan disclosed. “They make payments to keep them eligible to compete in what will be a series of events between their one and three year-old years (whereas American Heritage is one event).” “Payments start low,” Susan added. “Just an additional $10 when the animal is registered his birth year. Owners may opt out of the payments at any time in the program if they choose to do so. If

payments are maintained, the animal is eligible to compete in the Revolution events, which have an estimated payout of $1.8 million dollars.” “We wanted a low initial buy-in so everyone could easily join The Revolution when they do the animal registration of their bull calves their birth year,” said ABBI Executive Director Jay Daugherty. “As we’ve seen with American Heritage bulls, being registered in these types of programs increases the animal’s worth. At our annual ABBI Premier Sale in Las Vegas, it adds considerable value when an animal is entered into a program where he’s eligible to compete for huge purses.” “The ABBI has revolutionized the bucking bull industry,” shared former PBR Bull rider and current stock producer Cord McCoy. “What they have done gives anyone the opportunity to showcase their animals against the best. It evens the playing field. We compete with our bulls for a living. I don’t ever get paid just ‘out’ money, so I don’t consider myself a stock contractor. ABBI sanctioned and co-sanctioned events give me the chance to maximize my income. If I breed an animal and raise it to four years old, my bull has many opportunities to compete for huge paydays.” “The American Heritage for two year-old bulls is the biggest opportunity we have for our bulls to win big money,” Cord continued. “We enroll about twenty calves a year, but we usually take about five bulls to compete in June. The Revolution opens it up so that a calf

has several opportunities to win big money. We’re having a sale in November through the Breeders Connection.com. Those calves will already be enrolled in The Revolution.” In conclusion, Jay Daugherty offered,” With 95% payback and 100% side pots, The Revolution is designed to benefit bucking bull breeders and those stock contractors who compete with their bulls.” All photos by BullStockMedia.com and provided courtesy of ABBI.

Cody Teel

PBR Gains a Good One in

By Barbara Pinnella

Bull rider Cody Teel began riding bulls professionally in 2011, and is probably best known for his appearances on the PRCA tour, and participation in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Teel has competed in the National Finals five times, from 2012 – 2016. He won the World Title in that first year, 2012, and won the National Finals average title twice, in 2013 and 2015. When we spoke with Cody it was shortly after Hurricane Harvey had hit Texas, so we were concerned for him and his immediate family.

“My wife and I didn’t have any destruction; my family didn’t either. The homes in Kountze, the town I grew up in, got a lot of water in them and a lot of people around there had flood damage. But nothing happened to me personally or my family.” After getting that bit of good news we moved on to his chosen profession. Cody grew up in and around the business. His father Robbie was a PRCA bull rider in the 1980’s. “When I turned 18 I bought my PRCA permit and then bought my card in 2011. This is my seventh year riding professionally. I got into bull riding because of my dad. I never actually saw him ride bulls; he quit when I was born. But just being around him, hearing stories about it and growing up around the sport sparked my interest. “When he saw that I was interested he started to help me out. He never pushed me to ride bulls, but he always supported my decisions, once he saw I wanted it. He also coached me. We’d butt heads on things sometimes just because it was my dad,” Cody laughed. “But I always listened to him. And now that I’m older I see things a lot differently and understand more.” Cody loved his PRCA days and going to all the rodeos, and it was not just because of all the winning he did. “I really loved what I was doing, and all of the rodeos that I got to go to. That was all I wanted to do, so I really enjoyed it.” But for now Teel has put his PRCA days behind him and decided to devote his time to something different – riding full time on the PBR’s big time stage – the BFTS tour. We wondered why. Teel and wife, Kaitlin, celebrate his first event win on the BFTS in Glendale, Arizona.

Humps-Horns.com · 24 · October 2017

“Well, I just felt like it was time,” he said. “Throughout last year I always knew I wanted to go to the PBR. Being a bull rider, you get the best bulls and the biggest money out there. It seems like the main question throughout my career, over and over was, ‘When are you going to the PBR?’, and I knew I wanted to make the move. “Nowadays, the opportunity that the PBR provides the guys riding bulls for a living, it’s just one of those deals I had to do. I love the challenge of it and I was getting stale where I was. I wasn’t progressing and was at a standstill in my career, because in the back of my mind I wanted to go to the PBR. So that drove me to make the move, and it’s been great.” Cody knows that there is a big difference between riding at rodeos and riding in the PBR. Yes, they are riding bulls. In rodeos they get on so many more bulls throughout the year, but in the PBR they have the opportunity to get on much better bulls day in and day out. “You are gonna get on a great bull in the PBR every time you nod your head,” he explained. “That is one thing that you don’t have to worry about in the PBR. You can go to some rodeos and might not be drawing too great, so even if you are doing a good job riding the bull you might not be winning or placing. “So in the PBR you don’t have to worry about that, it’s all on you and I really like that part of it. It’s what makes you a cowboy. And

the traveling is a bit easier, it is more on the weekends, so you go ride your bulls and you are back home. It’s a lot different and I really enjoy it a lot. It’s really professional, I can say that! You feel like a professional there.” Teel embraces all of the personal appearances that come with riding in the PBR. He understands the importance of being accessible to the public and being seen at sponsors’ booths. “Being successful is what you want, and those sponsors help with that. It’s part of the job and I understand that. It still beats anything else that I’d want to do, for sure. It’s all part of it to me and I’ve learned to like every bit of it. It’s all part of the dream I had to get to do all the things I do – be a professional bull rider and hopefully get some world titles.” Within the past year there have been two big changes in Cody’s life. One of course is riding on the BFTS tour full time. The other was to marry his lovely lady, Kaitlin. The wedding took place on November 30 of last year, so they can still be considered newlyweds. “My wife gets to go with me to a lot of the events on most weekends, so it’s really fun to get to go to these events for the first time with her. I generally travel by myself if she doesn’t go, and then stay with different guys. I stayed with Cooper Davis at some of the Velocity events.”

Humps-Horns.com · 25 · October 2017

But this year, actually starting last fall, I’m on a consistent work-out program, and being home most of the week I can focus more on that. I can tell a big difference, too. I don’t seem to have as much soreness or nagging injuries like I have had in the past, so I really notice that. “I can take the wear and tear a lot better. It never hurts to be the best you can be and that’s the path I’ve taken this year, whether it be eating better or working out. I want to give myself the best chance I can to win. Right now I am 100%!” Cody is young and hasn’t really decided what he plans on doing when he is no longer riding. He does know that he wants to work for himself, possibly investing in some real estate properties in the College Station area. He does know that he wants to save up and then invest his money smartly. “Right now with the money and opportunities in the PBR, I want to see where bull riding takes me. Hopefully down the road I can work for myself and create my own jobs.” We at Humps N Horns have no doubt that he will. We are also pretty certain that he will make a huge name for himself in the PBR before he has to worry about another line of work, and we wish him the best of luck! Like so many others, Cody has livestock, but they are not at his home, since he does not have enough land. Instead, they are around the Beaumont area. “I have had some bucking bred cattle before and I’ve raised a few bulls. Nothing great, but I use them as my practice bulls. I have one practice bull now that I actually raised, so I’ve done that before. I won’t get too big, but I’ll always keep a couple of practice bulls around just to have.” Teel does not have any particular hobbies. When he has some down time he goes down and checks on his cows, but likes to stay home, relax, and get ready for the next event. But preparing for the next weekend does involve working out; something that he feels really helps him a lot.

Gene Owen and Jane Clark Riding High - Part II

By Barbara Pinnella

Photos by Phillip Kitts/ Avid Visual Imagery

Many bull riding fans are probably not aware of Jane Clark’s background, so let me start off by saying that she is no stranger to competition. She grew up in a family that was always involved with horses, and that interest came in many disciplines; race horses, fox hunting, show hunters and jumpers, dressage and, thanks to her great uncle, competitive driving.

She got her first pony for Christmas when she was four years old. “She was a wonderful little white pony with a big red bow in her forelock. She was literally under the Christmas tree,” Jane laughed. Things just progressed from there. Jane grew up fox hunting going to hunter trials and pony club. While she was in college, Jane started

owning and showing hunters in the Amateur / Owner hunter division. That love began to spill over to the jumper ring, when she bought some Grand Prix jumpers for Leslie Burr Howard to campaign. And thanks to her uncle, she also had competitive driving horses as well.

Hey Jack tosses his rider back into the chute. Photo by BullstockMeida.com provided courtesy of PBR.

“I still have competitive driving horses today. That started back in 1994. They were with Jimmy Fairclough until 2010, and since then they have been driven by Chester Weber. And I still have jumpers, who are now ridden by Great Britain’s Ben Maher. Unfortunately it’s not the American flag on the saddle pad, but I carry the British flag. We represented the British team in Rio for the 2016 Olympic Games.” But Jane is not finished there; she also has some lovely dressage horses. The great Robert Dover rode her horses for her, and he competed in three Olympic Games and won three Olympic team bronze medals on her horses. “When Robert retired in 2009, his protégée Katherine Bateson-Chandler took over the rides on my dressage horses, and is still riding them. She is competing on the United States Equestrian Team.” The world of professional bull riding might seem like a far stretch for Jane and, in fact, she really did not know much about the sport. When asked if she had spent much time around it, she laughed as she gave an honest response. “No! But I was listening to friends of mine talk to Shane George about it. They were getting involved with some bulls that Shane had, and it just sounded so interesting and like it would be so much fun. So that’s how I got involved; just by listening to those conversations. I thought it would be really fun to see what it was like to own a bull – or two. Now we are way past two,” she added. It was East meets West when Shane introduced Jane to Gene Owen, and the three of them were partners for a time. When Shane decided to go his own way, Jane stayed with Gene. They have been together about four years, and their partnership is just between the two of them. Gene had some very nice things to say about Jane, and she responded in kind. “Well, I have wonderful things to say about him! He is such a good bull man. He knows his animals, and knows exactly how to tell whether they are right to go on any given night. He is very sympathetic to them and how they feel, and he is usually absolutely correct when he says a bull is ready or not ready. I have a lot of respect for him and our bulls, and we have had a lot of fun doing this.”

While some bulls will let you scratch them and get close, Jane said that for the most part their bulls would rather you stay away from them. The closest she gets to them is when she goes back behind the chutes at an event. They are not like her horses, and she does not try touching them. “With most of my horses you can pat them and hug them and kiss them on the nose. But it is different with the bulls. I have a very healthy respect for my boys.” In Gene’s interview in last months’ issue of Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine, he mentioned that he had gone down to Florida and watched a bit of show jumping. He noticed the similarity in body

positions between bull riding and jumping, and felt that some riders could make the switch from one sport to the other. Jane concurred.

Jane is happy to leave the decisions to Gene, so it is entirely up to him as to whether or not they continue to breed bulls or buy them.

“I can see that transition,” Jane told us. “I know that jumper trainer Joe Lifto rode bulls. Todd Minikus, who has ridden a number of times for the United States Equestrian Team has ridden bulls quite successfully. I think Todd would be my choice for the transition.”

“Gene knows when it is the right time and the right bull, so I don’t like to make blanket plans like that. I just leave it to Gene and his judgment, and whenever he thinks its right, and then we go.”

Understandably, Jane is just as proud of the bulls she owns with Gene Owen as he is. She is very high on Seven Dust, as well as Hey Jack, Cochise, Mystikal, and Moto Moto. And that’s not all of them. “Hedoo is just coming along, and is in the early stages of the PBR. He has been bucking very well. And I love watching Gene watching Hedoo, because he really is excited. He has been with that bull for four years. There are two others set to come out, Big City and Force Awaken.” As a reminder, Gene told us that Hedoo is one that they bred and raised, so there is a bit of pride that goes along with that as well. And as of this writing, not only have Big City and Force Awaken bucked on the BFTS tour, but so have El Guerrero, Bar Down, and Animal Kingdom.

Jane might be a very busy lady, but she is still able to find time to just take it easy and relax. “On those quiet days I enjoy being out on the lake in Cooperstown in a boat. I get pleasure from reading and doing needlepoint. I also enjoy playing golf. I like to watch movies as well.” There is the ideal balance between business and pleasure, and Jane has been able to level that scale perfectly. As far as the bulls are concerned, expect for Jane and Gene to continue buying, and probably breeding, special bulls for the PBR. They have an exceptional partnership that is enviable and Humps N Horns is excited to see what new stars they may have on the horizon.

National Professional Bull Riders Association News

Call in for Mason, TX is Monday, October 23, 7-9pm @ 409-925-1695.

Pictures provided by William Kierce, Kierce Photography.

Bullriders travel from near and afar to get that adrenaline rush and that opportunity to fill their pockets full of cash and sport a brand new buckle for all to see. It only takes 8 seconds most would say. But today’s bullriders that compete in the professional world must mentally and physically prepare for each 8 second ride. Each bullrider has his own unique way of preparing in hopes that he will have that successful ride and score as many points as possible. The expense of traveling down the road far exceeds the payback in many cases. The National Professional Bull Riders is very fortunate to have bullriders dedicated to their profession. They strive for perfection and many continue on to higher levels of professional bullriding. We appreciate each and every cowboy that has helped the National Professional Bull Riders be a successful association since 2000. Hurricane Harvey has touched many lives in Texas. It has been amazing to watch the generosity and the many acts of kindness to those in need of help and the less fortunate. Bullriders, friends and family from our association have been affected and in turn, bullriders, friends and family have been out there helping each other with their needs. The National Professional Bull Riders is proud to be from Texas and have the opportunity to work and be associated with such great people. We wish everyone affected by Hurricane Harvey the best of luck rebuilding their homes, businesses and lives.
