FROM THE 1930s THROUGH THE 1950s, THE Broadmoor operated one of the largest private fleets of Cadillac vehicles in the world. The cars were used to transport guests to and from the resort, for sightseeing tours around the region, and for special occasions. The brand was also a favorite of resort founder Spencer Penrose, who personally selected several custom models for the resort and for his own use.

Today’s guests also benefit from this Cadillac connection. Cadillac Escalade SUVs are used to transport guests to and from the resort’s Wilderness Experience properties, and guests may also reserve a complimentary three-hour test drive of several new Cadillac models through The Broadmoor’s Ride and Drive program. Two fully restored models from The Broadmoor’s historic fleet are also available with chauffeurs for use by bridal parties, during corporate events, and for other special occasions. Here’s a look at several notable vehicles from the resort’s history.

It Began with a Gift

When Mr. Penrose wanted the perfect car as an anniversary present for his wife, Julie, he ordered a custom-built Cadillac with a V8 engine and

Mr. Penrose purchased this model to become part of his Gray Line Touring Company, which he acquired in 1936 and which boasted the world’s largest fleet of Cadillacs. Guests utilized the cars for sightseeing trips, touring, and excursions to popular attractions. In pleasant weather, you will often see a fully restored version of this model parked in front of the resort’s main entrance. It’s also available for special events and weddings.

A 1937 custom-made Cadillac was part of the original fleet that served the hotel through the 1950s. The number of these elegant vehicles reached a high of thirteen in 1956. The car has been meticulously restored to mint condition and is available for viewing at the resort, as well as for special events and weddings.

1 Guests could waterski on the lake

For a time during the 1960s, water-skiing was allowed on Cheyenne Lake. The resort would host demonstrations, and guests could also strap on a pair of skis and take a lap around the lake.

About The Broadmoor Fun Facts 10

The resort has had its fair share of interesting tales to tell over its 100-plus-year history. Here are a few of our favorites.

2 Flamingos once frolicked in the fountains

Topped by a glass roof and decorated with live plants and trees, La Taverne’s Garden Room opened in 1953 and featured a large fountain that, for a time, included a pair of resident flamingos. While most diners found them amusing, the flamingos were quickly relocated to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The Broadmoor’s first pool made a splash

The Broadmoor’s 35-by-80-foot indoor swimming pool was the largest in the West when the resort opened in 1918. Lined with blue-and-white ceramic tiles, the pool was filled with mountain spring water and purified by filters and a powerful violet-ray machine. The indoor pool was closed in 1961 and transformed into the Drugstore, which is now Café Julie’s.

There’s an out-of-step dancer on the ceiling

The Broadmoor’s main mezzanine, fronting the lake, is painted with an elaborate fresco that depicts two dancing cherubs. A closer look reveals that the male figure has two left feet. Artist Giovanni “John” Smeraldi included a similar intentional mistake when he painted a Grand Central Station ceiling. It’s believed that the artist included these purposeful errors to symbolize that, while all human creations are flawed, only God can achieve perfection.

5 The Little Theater hosted some big acts

Originally used for staging plays and musical performances— including by Igor Stravinsky, Vladimir Horowitz and Sergei Rachmaninoff—The Little Theater became a movie theater on July 4, 1948. Today, hotel guests can enjoy complimentary daily screenings.

6 Spencer Penrose largely ignored Prohibition

In anticipation of Prohibition, Penrose stockpiled more than 300 cases of assorted liquor for the hotel. When Prohibition ended in 1933, he shipped an additional cache of liquor to the resort. Some of these bottles are memorialized in Bottle Alley, outside La Taverne restaurant. The oldest in the more than 1,000-bottle collection dates from 1801.

7 There was a ski area on Cheyenne Mountain

Ski Broadmoor opened in 1959 on the slopes of Cheyenne Mountain. Ahead of its time, the facility included lights for night skiing and a $200,000 snowmaking machine known as the “Phenomenal Snowman,” the first of its kind west of the Mississippi River. A double chair lift carried 600 people an hour. The area closed permanently in 1991.

8 Guests ride on the highest cog railway in the world

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the highest cog railway in the world and the highest railway in America. Zalmon Simmons built the railway in 1891, and sold it to Spencer Penrose in 1926.

9 The story of the Wonder Road ends with a twist

Mr. Penrose constructed the 7-mile-long Cheyenne Mountain Highway, nicknamed the Wonder Road, in 1925 as a means to reach his Cheyenne Mountain Lodge, atop Cheyenne Mountain. The road cost more than $1 million to build, and rises more than 3,000 feet in elevation over slightly more than a square mile. It was featured in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” as the most-crooked highway.

A bear stole the show during the 2008 U.S. Senior Open

During televised coverage of the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, held at The Broadmoor, a black bear wandered onto the course during the second round of the tournament. The bear crossed the tee box on hole No. 14 soon after Mark McNulty hit his drive. Tom Watson’s backswing was interrupted by shouts of “Bear!” and an NBC commentator was seen running the opposite direction down the fairway

When you visualize a city, you see feats of design, engineering, and craftsmanship woven together in a grid of infrastructure and cohesion. These structures are brought to life through the buzz of industry and the personalities that operate them. With its multifaceted culinary program, extensive network of kitchens, and gifted artisan makers stretched across a vast campus, The Broadmoor could be considered a bustling city unto itself.

Spencer Penrose laid this rich foundation when he founded the hotel in 1918. He envisioned a culinary program that both celebrated the West and brought the world’s finest flavors to the resort’s dining rooms. For more than 100 years, this mission has prevailed through a team of talented chefs, an underlying focus on classical cooking techniques, and a reliance on the very best ingredients. Across the resort’s sprawling campus, kitchens big and small are dedicated to a sole purpose: excellence. The most visible of those are the ten restaurants, from the fine-dining Penrose Room, Colorado’s only AAA Five-Diamond restaurant, to the Tuscaninspired Ristorante del Lago.

But behind the grand curtain are workspaces dedicated to single tasks— baking, chocolate work, butchering, pasta making, and even gardening and beekeeping. It is here, beyond the dining rooms, where much of the delectable magic happens. “No one in their right mind does this on the scale that we do,” says Executive Chef David Patterson, who first started at The Broadmoor as executive sous chef of restaurants in 2013.

Take the bakery, where eighteen fulltime bakers roll, rise, and shape every single slice and loaf of bread served on the premises. Depending on the time of year, this could mean crafting an astounding 4,000 to 6,000 pieces of bread daily. At night,

the bakery switches gears and spins the dreamy pastry wonders—croissants, tarts, eclairs, doughnuts, and cakes—that show up on dessert menus and in Café Julie’s, the sparkling sweet shop in Broadmoor Main.

At the back of Café Julie’s, behind a frosted glass window, lies the heavenly scented chocolate kitchen. This gateway to deliciousness is a temperature-controlled series of rooms where a dedicated team churns an array of gelato flavors and crafts a dizzying collection of bonbons made from a proprietary blend of Valrhona chocolate. Even the sweets that land on guests’ pillows originate here.

Such devotion to craft is also evident in The Broadmoor’s butchery program, headed by Justin Wilson. There’s been a movement in the past couple of years to centralize the hotel’s meat work. At one point, Ristorante del Lago and Summit were butchering their own poultry, and Ristorante del Lago was making its own sausage. It made sense, however, to bring that production under one roof so all recipes and techniques (including brines, burger grinds and blends, and on-site smoking) are done in unison. “There’s an old adage: You never want to look around the kitchen and see three people chopping shallots,” Patterson says. “We’re just doing that on a grander scale.”

And speaking of grand, the hotel’s supply of Wagyu beef, the most prized of proteins,

arrives straight from The Broadmoor's owner's private Eagles Nest Ranch, in eastern Colorado. The herd of around thirty cattle is one of the most genetically pure in the country, and The Broadmoor is the only place in the world where guests can find its meat. (The Broadmoor also supports other local ranchers, including Colorado Springs’ own Corner Post Meats.)

Alongside a starter dish of the Wagyu Carne Cruda, the homemade pastas are the stars at Ristorante del Lago. Most guests are unaware that the fettuccini or orecchiette at the center of their plates is the result of a small but mighty operation inside the restaurant’s kitchen. One corner of the bustling space has been deemed pasta headquarters, where three dedicated chefs make and roll sheets of dough and run the

extruders. It is here that, with rare exception, all The Broadmoor’s fresh pastas are made. Noodles of all shapes and sizes are then delivered to individual restaurants and cooked to order.

Depending on where those pastas are served, they are likely to tangle with fresh vegetables or herbs grown and harvested from The Broadmoor’s on-site garden and greenhouse. Chef Patterson spearheaded the creation of the 3,500-square-foot outdoor garden and 2,500-square-foot greenhouse.

It was an ambitious project given the resort’s size, but it has become an inspiration point for the chefs who tend to it, farm it, and celebrate its bounty in their cooking.

The garden, the pasta station, the chocolate kitchen, the tireless pastry chefs and bakers—these are just a few of the threads that are woven together to create the fabric of The Broadmoor’s culinary city. The scent of freshly grated Parmesan enchants the senses as one enters Ristorante del Lago’s meat and cheese room. Wooden shelves are stacked with oversized wheels of Parmesan, along with bottles of fine olive oil. Dry-aged meat hangs among them. “It’s all from small momand-pop shops in Italy,” Executive Sous Chef Justin Miller says of the selection. Before Ristorante del Lago opened in 2014, Miller took two scouting trips to Italy to refine a vision for what an authentic Italian restaurant at The Broadmoor could be. “Every restaurant had a common thread: family recipes prepared traditionally and seasonally,” he says. “Italians aren’t trying to be hip and cool and make their own burrata. They go to the local market and procure the best.”

Miller brought that concept back to the resort, where he developed a menu that respects the same artisan craftsmanship. That starts with the ingredients, many of which arrive straight from Europe. The fragrant, pure olive oil you dip your rustic Pugliese bread in is from Tuscany’s Castello di Ama; the accompanying balsamic vinegar was hand-siphoned in Italy by family-run Giuseppe Cattani. Prosciutto is aged for 500 days by Pio Tosini, another family operation that’s been running in Emilia Romagna for more

than a century. The Parmigiano Reggiano in many of Ristorante del Lago’s dishes is produced by Valserena, located in Parma—it’s one of just four dairies in Italy that relies on alpine brown cows. Valserena is a family-run, fifth-generation producer that yields fewer than eight wheels of cheese a day. And the unusual pine bud syrup that tops the burrata appetizer originates from a family that hikes into the high alpine areas of Northern Italy, hand-harvests the wild-growing pine cones, and then produces the sweet liquid. “Quality ingredients prepared simply is the philosophy,” Miller says. “We’re honoring age-old traditions. We’re honoring generational cooking.”

In a small corner of the eatery’s kitchen, three chefs make all the pasta from scratch before it’s cooked to order for guests. Pizzaiolos pull Neapolitan-style pies from a 700-degree, Italian-made Valoriani oven. Vegetables, steak, and octopus are also cooked by its wood fire.

The Broadmoor, I head to the Golden Bee gastropub, a hive of upbeat live piano music, yard-long beer, and Old English ambiance to kick off my evening.

Cheese spread and crackers are placed on the table before an embroidered bee buzzes toward me, tossed by the waiter. “Stinging” guests with adhesive-backed bee appliqués is a tradition at the Golden Bee; sometimes, special seasonal bees even become collectors’ items. I proudly wear mine on my vest while perusing the menu.

backed by mirrors and framed with intricately hand-carved details. A polished veneer reflects the dim light, casting a golden glow. While happily munching on another cheese-smeared cracker, I sip the specialty Flight of the Bumblebee cocktail—made of Lee’s Lavender Gin, lemon juice, St. Germain, Crème de Violette, and maraschino liqueur—and take in the bar. As the room fills up, locals share their favorite not-to-miss Broadmoor activities with hotel guests while friends gather in groups to order drinks or dive into pipinghot malted potato wedges or bangers and mash.

A roar of laughter echoes off the tin ceiling as the pianist cracks a joke to a group gathered around the piano to sing along. I slide off my barstool to join in.

The Golden Bee is one of many bars, restaurants, and lounges that make evenings at the Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort special. Because when the sun sets, this sprawling property takes on a life of its own.

After harmonizing with my fellow singers, I head to The Hotel Bar for a nightcap and the perfect end to the evening. Off the mezzanine in the main building, the historic spot is anything but timeworn. Red leather banquettes, polished brass, dark wood paneling, and sculpted glass fixtures invoke the comfort and style of a velvet smoking jacket. Indeed, cigars are lined up in a humidor, and a gentleman puffs one on the outdoor patio beside a crackling fire. Grabbing a handful of pistachios, I take in the plethora of standout offerings behind the bar: Rémy Martin Louis XIII cognac, Blanton’s

bourbon, Don Julio 1942, and The Macallan (a 25-year-old rare cask Scotch)—all displayed prominently in their beautiful bottles. I select a snifter of Marnier Cuvée du Centenaire (a 100-year-old Grand Marnier seems appropriate for the 100-plus-year-old property) and gently eddy the contents in the glass, causing a bouquet of orange and vanilla to bloom in the warmth of the room. Hushed conversations and polite laughter emanate from the clusters of deep leather seats.

The next night, I watch a brilliant Colorado sunset dazzle in vermillion and crimson. The colors are so vibrant that guests stop to take photos. Swans glide across the golden waters of the central lake, and I have a bounce in my step.

I swing open the stained-glass-accented door to La Taverne and am greeted by strains of lively conversation and laughter.

Smiles abound as guests chat and savor crab claws and oysters from the raw bar. I sip my Champagne with a grin, feeling as buoyant as its bubbly effervescence. A few Kumamoto oysters, some more sparkling, and the Eagles Nest Ranch Wagyu featured cut, and I’m in for the night, filled to the brim in body and soul. No matter the time of year, you can count on evenings to remember at The Broadmoor.

GOLDEN BEE

A Natural Synergy

A visit to Eagles Nest Ranch underscores a deep culinary connection.

EAGLES NEST RANCH, AN IMMACULATELY maintained 50,000-acre spread in Northern Colorado, and The Broadmoor resort share a close association. It’s a symbiotic relationship that supports the ranch’s deep agricultural roots and connects The Broadmoor’s restaurants with local providers in a tightly closed loop.

Home to the most genetically pure herd of Wagyu cattle in America, the ranch is the sole provider of the highly prized, deeply marbled beef served at the resort. John and Lisa Finegan run the Wagyu operation at Eagles Nest Ranch and tend to a herd of about thirty lovingly cared for cattle. Once a month, Broadmoor chefs receive a shipment of various cuts from a processed steer. The meat arrives fresh and quickly finds its way onto plates at La Taverne steakhouse, Ristorante del Lago, and other Broadmoor restaurants.

“In the twenty-five years of being a chef, it is the highest quality American Wagyu beef that I have seen anywhere,” says Executive Chef David Patterson. “There are a lot of producers who say that they are the best, but nothing compares to what we have.”

The synergy of the ranch’s operations and The Broadmoor culinary program also extends to the fresh honey used in the antipasti misti at Ristorante del Lago, in Lake Terrance Dining Room, and that’s incorporated into chocolates, cheese displays, and sweets throughout the resort. Broadmoor chefs use about 1,000 pounds of honey annually, all of which is seasonally harvested and hand-rendered by beekeeper KJ Tencza from the forty hives at Eagles Nest Ranch.

“Our obligation as chefs is to find the best-quality ingredients possible and let those ingredients shine," Patterson says. "Take this honey—it’s served in its natural form and it’s perfect as it is. That’s the type of synergy we enjoy with the relationship between the ranch and the resort. It’s perfect.”

ASK DAVID PATTERSON ABOUT HIS morning, and you might find that The Broadmoor’s executive chef spent the early hours zipping around checking on seeds sprouting in the hotel’s culinary greenhouse, briefing top-level chefs on upcoming events, and blind taste-testing twenty different smoked salmons in search of the perfect one. Patterson is never idle, walking several miles each day as he crisscrosses the property to stop into each kitchen and restaurant.

The Kentucky native, who in 2017 was named the sixth executive chef in the history of The Broadmoor, has never been one to stand still. True, he didn’t dream of becoming a chef until a job making pizza in college lit that fire. But soon after graduating with a degree in industrial sociology from the University of Kentucky, Patterson enrolled at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont.

He graduated first in his class and immediately began working in top kitchens: the Striped Bass in Philadelphia, Maisonette in Cincinnati, and then he was hired as

executive chef of Passport Resorts’ Hotel Hana-Maui in Hawaii. “I was definitely too green for the job,” Patterson laughs, but the position required him to step up as a leader.

And it was on the island that his upbringing—which included a deep appreciation for homemade food and his grandparents, who were avid gardeners and preservers—really began to inform his cooking.

To highlight local products, Patterson created a farm-to-table program that connected the restaurant with small farmers, ranchers, and local fisherman. This was in the early days of championing all things local, and Patterson received national accolades.

Patterson’s quiet, anything-is-possible brand of leadership eventually led him to Alain Ducasse. He spent nine years at Adour Alain Ducasse in New York City and worked his way up to executive chef. BLACK FOREST PORCHETTA

The key to porchetta is using a fatty cut like pork saddle. Ask your butcher to cut one for you.

SERVES 10–12

5 POUNDS PORK SADDLE

1/2 HEAD GARLIC

1 LEMON

4 TABLESPOONS

OREGANO, PICKED

2 TABLESPOONS

ROSEMARY, PICKED

1 TABLESPOON KOSHER

SALT

2 TABLESPOONS BLACK PEPPER

1. Preheat oven to 325˚. Chop garlic to a rough consistency. Peel the lemon skin with a vegetable peeler over the chopped garlic. Place oregano and rosemary on top of the garlic and strips of lemon peel. Rough-chop all ingredients together.

2. Place pork on a cutting board. Rub the loin and belly with mixture, and season generously with salt and pepper. Truss the pork belly around the pork loin.

3. Place in a roasting pan and cook to an internal temperature of 150˚. Depending on the size, this could take anywhere from two to four hours. Allow porchetta to rest for twenty minutes, slice, and enjoy with country bread.

During a recent mother-daughter trip to The Broadmoor, I signed my mom and myself up for beginner golf lessons. On a sunny Saturday morning, outfitted in our crisp Polo shirts and rental shoes, we eagerly met our instructor, Debbie Zamprelli, the head teaching professional at The Broadmoor Golf Club and a life member of the LPGA. “When’s the last time you played golf?” Zamprelli asked as she loaded our clubs into the cart and we made our way to the putting green.

That’s when I made a confession that I had been harboring for several decades: “My parents signed me up for golf lessons when I was 9, but I habitually climbed the fence and went swimming,” I said. My mom looked at me a little shocked, but I figured there was a statute of limitations. As I approach my 40th birthday, I’m too old for her to ground me anyway.

Suffice it to say, I’m a beginner. A golf school dropout ready to redeem myself. Zamprelli is up for the challenge, putting me at ease as she lays out her theory about golf: “The golf swing is pretty simple if you start with a simple swing and build upon it,” she advises.

And with that, we take to the practice green and begin by learning the most approachable stroke—putting.

I consider myself lucky that my introduction to golf (rather, reintroduction) is with Zamprelli, who has developed a curriculum on “Logical

Golf for Women” classes and schools and helped thousands of women enjoy the game of golf through her easy-to-grasp analogies and enthusiasm. I’m also excited to be learning the game on The Broadmoor’s East Course, which is consistently ranked among the best in the country, with tree-lined fairways and gorgeous mountain vistas in the backdrop. Despite its beauty, I’ve read that players have loved the course one moment and cursed it the next—with the putting greens especially tough to read. The trick, I’m told, is to remember that putts break away from the mountains. But for now, I’m focused on keeping my putter flat on the ground, practicing a straight back and straight through stroke.

The East Course has hosted many major tournaments, including the 1959 U.S. Amateur,

when a 19-year-old Jack Nicklaus captured his first major win. The victory, he said, “was my stepping-stone to realizing that I might really have a future in the game.” Another golf legend, Annika Sörenstam, won her first major title on the East Course during the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open. Like Nicklaus, she said The Broadmoor has a special place in her heart because it kick-started her career.

Nicklaus and Sörenstam have 210 professional wins between them. Indeed, it could feel intimidating to be a novice learning on the same course where legends have been born. But Zamprelli is a pro at breaking down the game, presenting the fundamentals as building blocks, and assuring us that people on the course are welcoming to players of all abilities.

As it turns out, beginners are plentiful on golf courses these days. The National Golf Foundation saw a surge in the number of new players picking up the sport in 2020, as the golf course became a socially distanced oasis for people looking to get out of the house and be active. The NGF count shows 24.8 million golfers in the United States in 2020, up 500,000 from 2019. It’s the largest net increase in golfers in nearly two decades, and female golfers new to the sport particularly helped drive the surge.

For those who are brand-new to golf, Zamprelli likes to break up lessons so they are spaced a week apart, giving newbies time to practice in between the sessions. But if you’re vacationing at The Broadmoor, like my mom and I were, and want a solid introduction to golf in a weekend, you can certainly learn the basics. Starting with putting, we then moved on to chip shots before graduating to full swings

on the driving range. After that, it’s time to play a few holes—and, because the tee box can be intimidating when you’re just learning the game, Zamprelli likes to start those who are new to the sport twenty to twenty-five yards out from the hole so that it takes them no more than four shots to get the ball in the hole. Then, she moves them out to fifty yards, a progression that helps beginners learn the game’s flow, teaching them how to score and helping to improve their aim.

But the lessons start on the practice green, where putting is all about muscle memory, Zamprelli explains. “Everyone can be a good putter,” she says. To help build confidence, we start by putting from eighteen inches out. From there we gradually move farther away,

practicing the same stroke. Zamprelli reminds us that people have a hard time putting not because their direction is off, but rather because their distance is off. A perfect putt is one that rolls the right distance.

As we move to chipping, she tells us our goal is to get the ball onto the green and then in the hole in two putts. Then she tells us in a matter-of-fact tone that 80 percent of our score happens from twenty yards in. That was just the confidence-boosting fact this beginner needed to hear.

Our two days of lessons culminated with Zamprelli giving us each a customized notecard of the clubs we should use at varying distances. It’s now tucked in my new golf bag, as I have my own set of shiny new clubs ready to embrace a new hobby this summer and in preparation for a trip to Scotland, where I’ll play a round.

‘My Favorite Week of the Year’

The Broadmoor Invitation attracts the country’s top amateur golfers for a competitive, fun-filled event like no other.

“WITHOUT QUESTION, IT IS MY FAVORITE week of the year,” Trent MacEachran of Chicago says of the five-day Broadmoor Invitation, the resort’s premier amateur tournament that draws up to 100 players each July. This year marks the 101st anniversary of the event.

MacEachran, a 3.5 handicap and a veteran of five Broadmoor Invitation tournaments, doesn’t mind that everyone plays off scratch; nor that the format of the two-man-team event recently changed from match play to stroke play. “Sure, I want to win, but that’s not what keeps me coming back,” he says. “It’s the experience.

“It’s world-class from start to finish,” he says. “They have your name on placards on the range when you warm up, like the U.S. Open; starters wear jackets and ties; your name appears on the leaderboard they use for the USGA championships. For those of us who never made it on any professional tour, it’s pretty cool.”

The Invitation’s elite pedigree dates to 1921, when it was known as The Broadmoor Amateur. Over the next 70 years it became one of the top amateur golf tournaments in the country, drawing the best collegiate and nonprofessional golfers to compete in a five-day match play. Notable winners include

U.S. Amateur champions Charlie Coe and Bob Dickson and seven future PGA TOUR champions. Hale Irwin, winner of the 1967 tournament, and three subsequent Invitation runners-up—Lanny Wadkins, Mark O’Meara, and Fred Couples—are now World Golf Hall of Famers.

In 2018, since many matches weren’t going 18 holes—thus depriving some from competing on the entire course— PGA Director of Golf Russ Miller switched the format to stroke play, allowing players to select from one of three yardages: 7,100 (Champions); 6,600 (Traditions); and 6,200 (Legends). New this year is the Honors Flight, consisting of one player from the Legends Flight and another from either of the other two flights.

And unlike the cash-strapped college golfers who had often played the Invitation without staying at The Broadmoor, today’s competitors and their significant others also lodge at the resort, taking full advantage of its myriad Forbes FiveStar, AAA Five-Diamond amenities.

“We put a huge emphasis on making sure the spouses have activities very unique to the hotel and the area while their significant others are playing golf,” Miller says.

Gala receptions, speakers, and championship-jacket presentations are among the featured events. Both players and spouses receive gifts, such as an embossed leather weekender, fashionable garment bag, and well-appointed Dopp kit. This year, everyone in the field will also get fitted by Callaway SVP/Odyssey GM Sean Toulon for an Odyssey Triple Track putter to help handle those tricky Broadmoor greens.

“Camaraderie,” banker Robert Blair answers when asked to summarize what makes the Invitation so special. Blair has played in every Invitation since 2014 and says he loves seeing familiar faces. While he jokes that the competition gets tougher every year, he’s not complaining. It’s a sign that everything about the Invitation keeps improving—both on and off the course

The D.O.G. Gets His Due

Director of Golf Russ Miller joins eleven other Broadmoor luminaries in the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame.

IN 1993, RUSS MILLER WAS A PRODIGIOUS PGA director of golf at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. “Man, was he impressive,” The Broadmoor’s Chairman Steve Bartolin recalls. “I loved the guy.”

On a recommendation, Bartolin had flown to North Carolina to assess whether Miller had the goods to replace the retiring Dow Finsterwald, the director of golf who’d worked at The Broadmoor for twenty-eight years— nearly as long as Miller had been alive.

And therein lay the rub.

“Russ was a stud—sharp, in control, personable,” Bartolin says. “But he was only 30 years old, and we had a legacy of golf at The Broadmoor that we had to preserve. So I turned him down.”

Bartolin’s decision was understandable. In addition to Finsterwald, who had won the 1958 PGA Championship and participated in four Ryder Cups, The Broadmoor had only had two other directors of golf in its history: “Long Jim” Barnes, who’d won two PGA Championships, a U.S. Open, and a British Open; and “Big Ed” Dudley, a fifteen-time winner on the PGA Tour who’d spent twentyfive years splitting seasons between The Broadmoor and Augusta National Golf Club.

Five years and a number of golf pros later, Bartolin hired the then-35-year-old Miller as The Broadmoor’s fourth PGA director of golf. Ever since, the North Carolina native has perpetually exceeded the expectations of members, hotel guests, and management.

He has delivered three USGA major championships since 2008 (plus a fourth, the 2025 U.S. Senior Open); resurrected The Broadmoor Invitation tournament; overseen the restoration of both the East and West courses; mentored dozens of future head professionals and Evans Scholars; and immortalized The Broadmoor’s 104-year golf history in the clubhouse’s stunning Heritage Hallway.

Miller has not only perpetuated The Broadmoor’s golf legacy. He’s burnished it to such high luster that the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame inducted him in 2020. We spoke with Miller about the honor.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE COLORADO GOLF HALL OF FAME?

I am incredibly honored, appreciative, and thankful. I never expected anything such as this. I have had the privilege to serve as director of golf at The Broadmoor for twentyfour years. Following in the footsteps of Dow Finsterwald is something I don’t take lightly. As only the fourth director of golf since 1918, I am committed to helping the golf program at The Broadmoor be as good as it can be.

WHAT GOT YOU INTO GOLF?

I grew up in Asheboro, North Carolina, fifty miles west of Pinehurst, playing football, baseball, basketball, and golf. But once I figured out that I wasn’t big or fast enough to play those other sports in college, I settled on golf. I went to Ferris State University in Michigan, which had the first PGA Golf Management program sanctioned by the PGA of America. I competed on the golf team—but I found I really loved the business of golf.

WHAT HAS MADE YOU A PERFECT FIT AT THE BROADMOOR?

Harvie Ward always told me, “You have to work for the best people in the best places.” And this is it. I have great respect for The Broadmoor’s leadership because they have faith in us to take on new programs. They’re not afraid to try things, and neither am I. For example, in addition to our professional caddies, we’ve started The Broadmoor Caddie and Leadership Academy, which will teach teenagers not only

to caddie and forecaddie, but provide the life lessons that could lead to an Evans Scholarship and will serve them as adults.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

I’ll never forget what the great PGA Professional Bill Strausbaugh told me when I was 23 years old: “Russ, success is a choice” It seems elementary, but it is something that I have never forgotten and try to aspire to every day.

WHAT ABOUT THE USGA EVENTS?

The Broadmoor has a rich amateur golf history, which includes eight USGA championships— three of which have been on my watch: the 2008 and 2018 U.S. Senior Opens, and the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open. I’m proud to say we are also going to have the U.S. Senior Open in 2025. Our team has remained the same and knows what to expect from the USGA, and vice versa. There’s a comfort level that I feel it’s my obligation to build on and continue.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

This place is so busy and ever-changing that I never get bored. I enjoy going to USGA meetings. I love mentoring aspiring golf professionals and helping them obtain premier jobs in the golf industry. I enjoy interacting with people—our staff, members, and hotel guests—on a daily basis. This job gets into your blood. I’ve never regretted a day of work

Women on the Water

A women-only fly fishing event, “These Boots Are Made for Wading” offers instruction and opportunity for connection.

WHEN LOU STANCELL OF HOUSTON WAS organizing a girlfriends getaway for her friends to collectively celebrate their 40th birthdays, she discovered the Orvis-endorsed Broadmoor’s Fly Fishing Camp and “These Boots Are Made for Wading.” The women-only event checked all the boxes the friend group sought in a vacation: They would begin with a posh stay at The Broadmoor’s main resort before embarking on a scenic, 75-mile drive to the peaceful and private fishing camp. Over a few days, the women who met more than two decades ago in college strengthened their bonds on the river and learned a new sport together.

“We learned that it’s okay to try something new at 40 and be amateurs,” Stancell says. “The guides made everything so easy and approachable.”

Currently, women make up less than onethird of the 6.5 million Americans who fly fish, according to the most recent study by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation. For the all-inclusive “Boots” weekend, The Broadmoor partners with Orvis and its 50/50 On the Water initiative, an industry-wide campaign to increase gender parity in fly fishing.

During the weekend, guests are paired with guides, and the days can be customized for varying skill levels, from beginners who are learning to cast for the first time to more advanced anglers eager to refine their technique or learn to read the river better. Logistics—from securing fishing licenses to suiting up in waders and boots—are a breeze.

And, after a day on the water, the main lodge beckons with its wraparound porch and rocking chairs, a perfect perch to show off fish

photos from the day and compare notes.

In true Broadmoor fashion, the Boots weekend is also peppered with luxury: A resort chef prepares family-style, gourmet meals and leads cooking demonstrations, plus there is a wine tasting and nights around a fire pit, toasting s’mores under the stars.

Those learning the sport quickly find that fly fishing isn’t as easy as baiting a hook with a worm and dropping your rod into a lake. It takes more skill, better form, and a borderline obsessive curiosity about how fish move in the river and what, on any given day, will entice them to bite. With that in mind, the camp provides a series of clinics that cover fundamentals like casting and fly tying. Guests are also introduced to the wild world of insects during a class with Robert Younghanz (known as “the Bug Guy”), who has gained international acclaim for his entomologist’s approach to the sport and ability to identify thousands of insects.

Under the guidance of professional Broadmoor guides and along five miles of private waters, camp guests build on fly fishing skills— spotting seams in the river (the fast-moving sections where fish congregate to feed) as well as casting and setting hooks. The magic happens when you see your leader dip under the water’s surface, hinting that a fish has taken your fly.  For Stancell, that was the moment that got her hooked: “It was electrifying,” she says. “I couldn’t wait to catch my next fish

BEFORE I EVEN CHECKED INTO THE SPA at The Broadmoor, I felt both calmed and inspired by my surroundings.

I’d just completed a killer workout: heavy deadlifts with a barbell. (That’s not the kind of equipment you’ll find in a typical resort, but The Broadmoor Fitness Center is stocked with everything, even for powerlifters.) After my workout I enjoyed a soak in the outdoor hot tub and then reclined on a chaise lounge by the indoor pool, sipping on

a glass of cucumber-infused water, as I—and my tired muscles—delightfully anticipated some quality spa time. Only at The Broadmoor, I thought to myself.

I spent most of my time on a comfy bench inside the unique oxygen room, the air of which is infused with a higher-than-normal concentration of oxygen. This is especially appealing to out-of-state travelers trying to manage the thin mountain air, but it rejuvenated this Colorado native, too. I felt my small headache quickly melt away.

That was a fitting prelude to the treatment I had booked: The Broadmoor’s Oxygen Infusion skin treatment. I’d never heard of anything like that before, and it seemed uniquely suited for a healthy Colorado getaway.

The facial was a little more technical than the typical rub-your-face-for-anhour treatment. It started with some of the standard steps I expect from a facial, including a gentle wash. Then my therapist applied an active serum and used the gentle, hyperbaric pressure of a special machine to deliver oxygen and infuse the serum into the deepest layers of my skin. It was soothing and (honestly) fun. When she went over my lips, it tickled a bit and made us both laugh. She spent some extra time on my deeper lines, such as around my eyes and forehead. I was pleased to see her using products from Sanitas, one of my favorite local skin care lines.

Fun in the Sun

ALTHOUGH COLORADO IS A LANDLOCKED state, water has always been a central feature of The Broadmoor. The main campus is oriented around Cheyenne Lake, a humanmade reservoir that John and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.—The Broadmoor’s original landscape architects and sons of Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., born 200 years ago this year—keyed off to lay out the paths, plantings, and green spaces that make up the resort’s bucolic grounds. As with New York City’s Central Park, designed by Olmsted Sr., the lake provides an attractive focal point that invites guests to relax on and around its waters.

When The Broadmoor opened in 1918, three sandy beaches lined Cheyenne Lake for bathers to bask in the abundant Colorado sunshine. The beaches remained until the early 1960s, which is also the era when waterskiing demonstrations were held on the lake. Guests could even strap on a pair of skis and take a few laps themselves. Guests could also try their hand at fishing in the stocked lake. Cheyenne Lake was once even home to two sea lions, who were introduced to help control an excess fish population. Sea lions require a saltwater diet, however, and were soon relocated to the nearby Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The lake is quieter these days, yet no less enjoyable. Paddleboats and handsome electric canopy boats—recreations of the resort’s original wooden designs—now ply its waters. White swans, a personal symbol of Julie Penrose, wife of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose, also traditionally make their home on Cheyenne Lake. As it’s been for decades, a stroll around the lake is a favorite pastime of Broadmoor guests.

The Infinity Pool Complex

The Broadmoor opened with the largest indoor swimming pool of any resort in the Western United States. Lined with blue-andwhite ceramic tiles, the 35-by-80-foot pool was filled with purified mountain spring water. The indoor pool was covered over in 1961, and a large outdoor pool built to take its place.

The original outdoor swimming pool served guests for several decades. When it was time for an upgrade in the late 1990s, Broadmoor management took the opportunity to construct a king-sized swimming complex at the north end of Cheyenne Lake.

Building a pool into an existing lake was not without its challenges, however. After an attempt to create a floating dam failed, the fish were removed from the lake and relocated, and the lake was drained to complete the project.

Abundant sunny days and year-round swimming options make for a fun-soaked time at The Broadmoor.

The new pool complex debuted Memorial Day weekend of 2001. Impressive in both size and scope, the heated infinity pool features a beach-like “zero-entry” slope that gradually reaches a maximum depth of five feet. The 11,000-square-foot pool’s crystal-clear water appears to blend seamlessly into the lake.

The complex also features Slide Mountain, with two waterslides built into a rock-scape that mimics the pool’s mountainous backdrop. A children’s pool and a small bubble-jet fountain are also nearby, as are two 14-person whirlpools. Attendants greet guests upon arrival and offer plush towels as they guide them to open chaise lounges. Seventeen private shaded cabanas are also available for rent, including a “grand cabana” with a largescreen television. Food and drink are available from the adjacent pool café. Locker facilities, including a shared facility for families with small children, are also located on-site.

Spa Pools

The Broadmoor’s tradition of an opulent indoor swimming pool continues on the ground floor of The Broadmoor Spa and Golf Club. Open year-round, the pool is located in a large, airy, and light-filled room outfitted in signature Broadmoor style. Daily fitness classes are also held in the pool.

A whirlpool overlooking the golf course is located just outside the pool’s door and is also open year-round, as is an adjacent two-lane lap pool.

Paddleboats

Guests may also take in the spectacular mountain views as they cruise Cheyenne Lake in two-person paddleboats or electric Lightning Bug skiffs. Paddleboat rentals, included in the daily resort fee, are located at the Lakeside Boat Dock and available on a first-come, first-served basis. A father and his daughters enjoy falconry, try their hand at tomahawk throwing, explore a scenic canyon, and more during their Broadmoor adventure. BY

Our guide at The Broadmoor’s Falconry Academy positions my daughters to face each other, and then kneels behind them and holds up a leather-gloved arm. Suddenly, a burst of feathers grazes the girls’ faces as Goldie, a Harris Hawk, swooshes between them to land on her handler. My 12-year-old closes her eyes and stands her ground as the bird passes in front of her, and my 9-year-old jerks her head and upper body backward. Both sport enormous smiles.

We’re taking a weekend away, enjoying one another’s company in the beautiful spring setting of The Broadmoor and jam-packing our days with activities we’ve never tried before. We’ve booked everything through Broadmoor Outfitters before our arrival. All we have to do now is report on time to Base Camp, a shop and office on the lower level of the hotel’s South Tower, to sign our waivers and hop in the shuttle.

Close Encounters of the Bird Kind

The Falconry Academy was created with the goal of teaching guests about birds of prey, the history of falconry, and their role in raptor conservation. We began our ninety-minute falconry tour in the mews, as we learned the raptor house is called, behind The Broadmoor’s West Tower. There we met our guide, who taught an animated

lesson and removed several birds from their cages, bringing us face-to-beak with some magnificent creatures.

Two highlights were Dalilah the Eurasian Eagle Owl (the largest owl in the world) and Cupid the Barn Owl, who sometimes plays ring bearer at Broadmoor wedding ceremonies. Lesson over, we loaded into a van and ascended the property, past the golf course, to an overlook at the edge of a steep forest and field. Our guide opened Goldie’s customized wooden box in the back of the truck, and she took off and followed us, untethered, flapping from branch to branch as we walked along a trail. This was the experiential portion of our lesson.

The handler then had Goldie fly through our entire group while we formed a tunnel with our arms, then had her ascend and dive, chasing a sling loaded with bait. Then it was time for her final trick—the two-sister

The restaurant also offers shuffleboard, pool tables, foosball, and game monitors— plus a loaded bar—a perfect combo.

New Hands Try Old-West Skills

I awoke early and jogged around Cheyenne Lake, taking a scenic route to the fitness center, then returned to the cottage after my workout to wake the girls. We had a big day of unknowns ahead of us, and I encouraged them to tank up during breakfast at Ristorante del Lago. Over omelets and

THE BROADMOOR Soaring Adventure

The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure takes guests traversing above the secluded South Cheyenne Canyon for an unbelievable zip lining experience soaring high above rocky outcroppings and forested canyons on zip lines ranging in length from 250 to 1,800 feet, with some moderate hiking.

Start your adventure at Broadmoor Outfitters Base Camp, where you’ll be transported to the start of the course. Participants are fitted with top-of-theline gear and then receive extensive instruction on a practice zip line. Participants must weigh at least 90 pounds and no more than 250 pounds. pastries, I read out loud from our itinerary for the morning: “You will learn and hone the skills once necessary to survive in the Wild West!”

We walked to Base Camp, climbed into the outfitter’s truck, and headed up Old Stage Road, on which horse-drawn coaches once traveled to the gold-mining communities of Victor and Cripple Creek. We got out and walked through ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest, finding our guides waiting for us at the archery range.

After a safety briefing, the guides gave us detailed, attentive instruction. It quickly became apparent that my 9-year-old preferred tomahawk throwing and my 12-year-old the bow and arrow. They divided and conquered, getting one-on-one instruction, the time flying by. Though neither would dream of hurting an animal, they took to the representational targets with glee.

Hiking the “Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado”

I’ll admit it: My daughters complained when I told them we were going for a hike. I thought I’d raised them better as Colorado natives, but they still resisted when I told them the afternoon activity—hiking up a canyon to a multitiered waterfall! Nevertheless, they came along and I knew that once we got there, things would turn around. We purchased our entrance bracelets from the Broadmoor Shop in the West building, hopped the five-minute shuttle to The Broadmoor’s Seven Falls gate, and started walking.

Cheyenne Canyon, a 1,250-foot-wall box canyon pinched between the towering 900-foot-tall rock formations called the Pillars of Hercules and known as the “grandest mile of scenery in Colorado.” Sure enough, the moment we caught sight of a zip line way up above, spanning the canyon, my daughters were once again enthralled with the scenery, and I knew yet another proper micro-adventure had begun.

The silhouetted cable against the sky was one of ten zip lines that make up the Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, which also includes two 200-foot rope bridges and a rappel at the end. Although we wouldn’t be soaring that day, just the presence of those adventurers up above added to the discovery.

We declined the tram car and instead walked nearly a mile along the half-frozen, half-rushing creek that led us to Seven Falls, a series of waterfalls cascading down the rock face.

We took in the impressive site, and I could see the awe on the girls’ faces as they attempted to track droplets of water flowing down each of the falls’ seven pitches. Their mood was improved as we walked back down the path and returned to the resort to pack up.

of my favorite places in the world is a rustic, charming cabin perched atop a mountain in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. It’s not just any cabin, and it’s not just any mountain. I’m talking about Cloud Camp, one of The Wilderness Experience retreats of The Broadmoor. As you would expect of any Broadmoor property, the cabin is well-appointed with rich, colorful furnishings, adhering to a Western motif. But it’s so much more than lodging.

Among Cloud Camp’s many delights is its top-of-the-world setting. Cloud Camp crowns Cheyenne Mountain, 3,000 feet above the expansive, well-maintained grounds of The Broadmoor’s main campus. Cabins are tucked amid pines and aspen trees, immersing guests in the natural landscape and removing almost all intrusions of modern life.

Like most people, I sometimes have trouble letting go of vacation to-do lists. Cloud Camp makes that easy. Conveniently, the cabins

Cloud Camp A

Cloud Camp is located on the site of historic Cheyenne Lodge, which opened in 1926. Built by Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose in the style of America’s National Park lodges, the secluded retreat included a restaurant, four guest rooms, and a third-floor suite for Mr. Penrose. Guests could make the trek up the Cheyenne Mountain Highway on the backs of sure-footed mules—a tradition that continues to this day!

While the original lodge is long gone, Cloud Camp’s Main Lodge is built on its foundation. Today, guests can hike to the camp, ride a mule up the roadway, or choose to arrive in a chauffeured Cadillac Escalade.

My first trip to Cloud Camp was short—just a night—but enough to entice me to return. I remember not wanting to leave my cabin, but I was persuaded to join a three-mile guided hike with Ranger Rocky Shockley. We descended on a narrow path, past garage-size granite boulder outcrops, and through a forest of quaking aspens and pines. The views of valley and mountain peaks were mesmerizing.

“People are speechless when they get to Cloud Camp,” Shockley says. “The ride up primes them for the experience. They arrive with a smile on their face and say it can’t get any better. And then they see Pikes Peak and these views.”

Accommodations are fifteen comfortably appointed one- and two-bedroom guest cabins nestled into the forested summit, with a pair of outdoor hot tubs located nearby. Additionally, the Main Lodge offers seven guest rooms, including a honeymoon suite.

The lofty Fire Tower Suite, perched on a promontory high above the camp, offers the ultimate in privacy with sleeping quarters on its first floor, private hot tub, a wraparound deck, and second-story study that affords 360-degree views.

“It’s an exceptional experience,” says Cloud Camp guest Carrie Kaveney, noting that she and her husband, Kevin, have stayed twice in the Fire Tower Suite. “It’s close quarters, but the views are exceptional, and we had our own hot tub. Staying there was a standout experience for us.”

The 8,000-square-foot Main Lodge features a great room with two massive stone fireplaces. The lodge is decorated with Westernthemed objects and art. A highlight is actor Kevin Costner’s costume from the film “Dances with Wolves." The wraparound deck invites guests to kick back and relax and revel in the natural splendor of the surrounding woods and mountain peaks.

Lafe and Debra Bailey are regulars at Cloud Camp, first visiting five years ago and returning every year since. Their intent has been to check out other Wilderness Experience properties, but they have been unable to pull themselves away from Cloud Camp, “our first love,” Lafe Bailey says.

“We’ve pretty much gone up and stayed there during the duration of our visit, which has been as long as ten days. It was unanimous during our second visit: We don’t want to leave Cloud Camp,” says Bailey, co-CEO and president of sales and corporate development for a Kansas manufacturer of processing systems for food and animal feed. “It’s just been wonderful. We love everything about it.”

The Baileys like to gather at Cloud Camp with their family—their son and three daughters, as well as spouses and children.

An abundance of free time at Cloud Camp is a big sell for the Baileys, who live in northeast Kansas. They’re content to relax, linger over meals, play board games and just enjoy being together.

“It sounds old-fashioned, but we just hang out together,” Bailey says. “As we were raising our kids, we placed an emphasis on family time. Sometimes we just play games together. It’s a lot of eating together. We made mealtime a priority. The food is exceptional at Cloud Camp.”

Meals are served communally in the Great Room. The menu is seasonally driven, but expect to find dishes like Maine lobster bisque, Rocky Mountain trout, and decadent desserts. The sweettea fried chicken is a perennial favorite of the Baileys.

In the evenings, the Baileys gather around a fire pit, roast s’mores, and recount the day’s adventures with other guests. The family has met some “incredible people” over the years, some of whom they keep in contact with, he says.

“Some families are all about getting together and going 100 miles an hour, doing this and doing that,” Bailey says. “We’ve always enjoyed nature and being a part of it. It’s just so relaxing, and you can really unwind. It’s that there is nothing to really do that is so captivating.”

The Ranch

at Emerald Valley

A SECLUDED MOUNTAIN GETAWAY

The Ranch at Emerald Valley, which opened in 2013, boasts the distinction of being the first Broadmoor Wilderness Experience property.

Located about thirty minutes from The Broadmoor, The Ranch at Emerald Valley lies in the heart of a lush valley at the foot of Mount Vigil, surrounded by more than 100,000 acres of Pike National Forest. Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose purchased the property in 1923 and created the Pikes Peak Camping and Mountain Trails Association, a subscription membership club with

cabins and modern services. He called the ranch Camp Vigil, after the mountain.

Today, fittingly, The Ranch at Emerald Valley is very much an updated version of what Mr. Penrose envisioned all those years ago. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins are outfitted with comfortable furnishings and modern amenities like handcrafted textiles and Western-themed art. Amenities include gas fireplaces, and heated floors in the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Kevin and Carrie Kaveney, who live in Colorado Springs, were among the first guests to visit The Ranch in the summer of 2014, with their two school-aged children, Conor and Carson.

“When you live in Colorado, there’s a lot you can do outdoors, but they make The Ranch such a genuine experience. Our kids were young at the time, but we all really enjoyed it,” said Carrie Kaveney, a former marketing manager for an IT consulting firm and now a stayat-home mom. “The staff was so accommodating. We were really impressed.”

The family embraced the myriad activities at The Ranch. Their long list of adventures included archery, fly fishing, canoeing, and

horseback riding. They also enjoyed the hot tub and sitting around the fire pits in the evening.

“Seeing the kids being able to catch some of their first fish was just awesome,” Kaveney recalls. “It truly piqued their interest in fishing.”

Meals are served in the Main Lodge. Unlike the other Wilderness Experience properties, families and couples can dine alone at separate tables. The Ranch at Emerald Valley offers buffet-style cookouts every Wednesday and Saturday nights, with lobster tails, prime rib, trout, fried chicken, salads, homemade cobbler, and more, as well as live music

“The food was absolutely amazing,” Kaveney says.

The all-inclusive Ranch features two private ponds for fishing and canoeing, and also offers guests a variety of activities, including horseback riding, guided hiking and mountain biking, and archery.

What strikes most visitors, says Ranch Manager Aaron Kuper, is the mountain valley setting, surrounded by Pikes Peak National Forest, the two lakes on the property, and the cabins.

“This is the picture-perfect postcard of Colorado,” Kuper says.

Fly Fishing Camp AN ANGLER’S PARADISE

The Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Camp is the farthest from The Broadmoor, about 75 miles west of the main campus, along the border of the 125,000-acre Lost Creek Wilderness. Reservations with Gray Line, The Broadmoor’s transportation partner, are recommended for travel to and from Fly Fishing Camp.

A five-mile stretch of Colorado’s famed Tarryall River runs through the camp, which was once a homestead with cabins in the early decades of the last century before The Broadmoor purchased the property. You can learn or perfect your fly fishing skills here under the guidance and tutelage of professional guides. Wild brown, cutthroat, rainbow, tiger, and brook trout can be found in the river. It’s all catch and release here.

This idyllic landscape of timbered canyons, grassy meadows, and winding bends is reminiscent of A River Runs Through It, Norman Maclean’s novella about family relationships and fly fishing.

Seven of the original cabins, which date back to the 1920s, have been reclaimed and reimagined in The Broadmoor style. The cabins boast two double or two single beds. Wooden-hewn beams, log furniture and accent pillows embroidered with rainbow trout accentuate the camp décor.

An active couple enjoy a respite from their everyday lives with a three-day stay at The Broadmoor.

V“VIOLATION!” ROARS CHRISTOPHER ELLIS FROM THE OTHER side of the pickleball court. I freeze. I’m about a foot from the net, my paddle still perfectly positioned above my head for the winner I’m about to hit.

The ball drops—there goes my McEnroe moment. And after a millisecond of shock and frustration (did Chris just yell at me?), I realized I was about to violate one of the cardinal rules of pickleball: In the no-volley zone called the "kitchen," you’re not allowed to hit the ball midair.

I look back at my boyfriend (and newfound pickleball partner), Brian, and we burst into laughter. Ellis, The Broadmoor’s head tennis professional, chuckles too. “I told you, Meghan, things can get hot in the kitchen,” he says, playing up his native Huntsville, Alabama, drawl.

I won’t lie: Before our private pickleball lesson with Ellis began, Brian and I had a whole bunch of preconceived notions about this game being for the retired set. We thought it was something we should save for our golden years in Florida or Arizona—not a game for age 40-ish people like us who fill our downtime hiking, biking, playing tennis, and generally staying very active.

Yet just five minutes into our lesson with Ellis, we have a change of heart. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong, which makes it fast and lighthearted. The rules sound a little complicated, but Ellis assures us we’ll pick them up as we keep playing. Our burgeoning skills are impressive enough that when Karen Schott, director of tennis, walks by, Ellis talks her into joining us for a doubles match.

Brian and I get creamed. The score: 11 them, 0 us. Still, we walk off the court invigorated—and ready for more fun.

We head back to our room for quick showers—it turns out pickleball is a surprisingly great workout that’ll get the heart pumping and sweat flowing—before walking to the Spa at The Broadmoor for his-and-hers pedicures. While pickleball was a tough sell for my sweetie, I had to seriously twist Brian’s arm to

get him to the spa for his first-ever pedicure. I remind him of how much fun we just had doing something we were skeptical of. I read him the description of the zero-gravity chair he’ll enjoy as someone else clips his toenails and sloughs off his calluses. He remains unconvinced of how relaxing and indulgent a professional pedicure can be until he dips his toes into the warm, bath bomb–infused soak. Once the nail technicians working on our feet recline our chairs, we both fall asleep. And while Brian doesn’t exactly admit it, I’m pretty sure he fell in love with the experience.

We walk to Ristorante del Lago for a meal I am sure we’ll both love: wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, and house-made cannoli and gelato. While we eat, we muse about how lucky we are to have amazing family and friends, good health, and jobs we love. Our lives are jam-packed with great stuff. Yet life can also be a little predictable. Boring, even. Not exactly jam-packed with play. Within the first few hours of staying at The Broadmoor, a veritable camp for grown-ups filled with all kinds of opportunities to be active, we

realize how much we’ve been craving a change to our go-to routine. And at that moment, we decide to fill the following day with some serious fun.

Our server either overhears snippets of our conversation or simply picks up on our new, spirited vibe. “It’s still early—you two should go bowling at Play,” she suggests. “And make sure you get an adult milkshake.” Within minutes, Brian and I are sharing a ginspiked vanilla milkshake and laughing our way through a few games in the hotel’s upscale six-lane bowling alley. On our way out, we’re tempted to stop at the shuffleboard table or play pool or foosball, but we head back to our room. We’ve got to save some energy for tomorrow’s action-packed day.

Ready, Set, Play

The Broadmoor has long been celebrated for the number of activities on offer that inspire guests to experience the beauty of the American West, and we quickly see how easy it is to link several of them together to create a customized itinerary.

We decide to start with a hike—a must when you’re surrounded by majestic mountains—and see that our options are endless. At The Broadmoor, you can enjoy everything from a mellow, informative walk with a naturalist through the nearby sandstone formations of the Garden of the Gods to a heart-pounding 850-foot uphill climb (at 6,035 feet above sea level!) on the Section 16 trail in Bear Creek Cañon. The Broadmoor continues to be a steward of nature in Cheyenne Canyon, participating in trail upkeep and maintenance.

Soon after sunrise, Brian and I have coffee and freshly baked croissants at Natural Epicurean and then hit the 1.2-mile Chamberlain Trail in North Cheyenne Canyon, which complements the previously existing South Cheyenne Canyon Trail. We’re the only ones on the rambling, wooded path—a rarity in Colorado’s high season—which tells us we’re on the kind of hidden treasure hike that only the locals know about.

A couple of hours later, we’re back at the hotel and hit the hot tub. As we soak, we chat about the fact that Brian’s filled with as much excitement as I am anxiety about what’s next: the courses at The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure.

At Base Camp, the outdoor shop located in South Tower, Kurt Segerberg with Broadmoor Outfitters talks us through what we’re in for.

We’ll start with the Woods Course, a zip line cruise high above a forested canyon with sweeping views of South Cheyenne Creek and St. Peter’s Dome. We’ll soar along five zip lines total—the last one stretching across a gorge 1,400 feet below us. My adrenalinejunkie boyfriend’s face lights up as he hears this, and mine contorts into a mix of shock and fear.

Segerberg notices this and assures me that the aerial installations we’re about to try were designed by industry leader Bonsai Design, which exceeded safety standards when engineering these courses for The Broadmoor. I start taking deeper breaths, which is Segerberg's cue to explain the Fins Course, on which we’ll traverse two 200-foot suspension bridges and rappel 180 feet down to the base of Seven Falls—the best way to see the famous cascading waterfalls of South Cheyenne Creek. “There’s nothing quite like the feeling of soaring a couple of hundred feet above the jagged rock pinnacles below,” Segerberg says.

It turns out he’s right. A rush of excitement makes my initial uneasiness seem almost laughable as I glide along that first zip line on the Woods Course, high above aspen trees and ponderosa pines. Thoughts of bowing out of the Fins Course have been replaced by pure excitement—and Brian flashes me a smile before I push off the platform to ride our last zip line of the day.

I’m still buzzing with adrenaline and pride as we walk to the Golden Bee, an authentic gastropub that makes us feel like we’re in the Cotswolds—not Colorado. (The pub’s beautiful wooden bar is originally from London. It was transferred to The Broadmoor, panel by panel, from New York City, where it had been in storage.) One order of beer-steamed mussels and two plates of fish and chips later and we’re happily stuffed and ready for a well-earned nap.

There’s something inherently relaxing about knowing you don’t have to get in your car after you’ve checked in to The Broadmoor, which makes our afternoon siesta even more enjoyable. When we’re up, we stroll around the lake to an outdoor table at Bar del Lago for cocktails before dinner. Brian dutifully plays Instagram husband as I pose against the picture-perfect backdrop, martini in hand. After watching the sun dip behind the Rockies, we walk to La Taverne for a hand-cut steak dinner.

I’m up with the sun again, and this morning I head to the indoor pool for a 7 a.m. Early Bird Aquafit class. It’s a surprising choice for me. I usually start my days lifting weights at my gym or riding my Peloton spin bike at home. And while I’m tempted by the fully stocked fitness center—complete with the kind of equipment you don’t usually find in a hotel—I put on my bathing suit and meet JudyAnn, the instructor, in the pool. The no-impact moves are gentle—but that doesn’t mean they’re not every bit as effective as my go-to exercises on dry land, JudyAnn tells me. “There’s a good chance you’re using muscles you don’t usually work, which means you may be a little sore tomorrow,” she says. Ten minutes into class, I have to dunk my head under the water to cool off. I have the distinct feeling JudyAnn is right about tomorrow’s soreness.

The workout is challenging but leaves me wanting more, so I head back to the fitness center a couple of hours later for Broadmoor Bootcamp, a fast-paced workout that includes some four-pound dumbbells, weighted medicine balls, a resistance band, and a ballet barre. The combination of exercises using a variety of equipment gives me a muscle-toning, cardio workout that burns 539 calories, according to my Apple Watch. I’ve officially earned lunch at The Hotel Bar.

There’s so much more Brian and I want to do. We talk about playing a game of tennis, considering that The Broadmoor has been rated one of the top twenty tennis resorts in the country by Tennis magazine for the past twenty years. We’re tempted to take a private lesson with one of the golf pros, thinking the instruction and world-class course could change our minds about the sport the same way Ellis transformed how we think about pickleball. We consider mountain biking, rock climbing, and even falconry, which would give us an up-close encounter with beautiful birds of prey. We make a mental note to do all of it during our next visit, deciding that a half-day guided fly fishing trip is the perfect end to our Broadmoor adventure. The setting is like something out of A River Runs Through It. Pine and aspen trees surround us; the pristine South Platte River is chock-full of trout. Brian, an avid angler, is in his element—and I’m revisiting the basics with our endlessly patient guide, practicing the casting techniques I learned a couple of years ago on a trip to Montana. Soon, we’ve all slipped into that meditative rhythm that draws so many people to this sport, and I let my mind wander to everything Brian and I have done in the past couple of days—and how it’s connected us in a new way. As we drive back home to Boulder, I’m still buzzing. In the world we live in, pure, adult fun is a rare commodity—and The Broadmoor offers the kind of custom-ordered activities and entertainment that stick to your bones long after you leave the place. When we get home, I head straight for my computer to buy pickleball paddles on Amazon, so we’ll be ready to avenge the 11–0 drubbing on our next visit

RAILWAY REACHES NEW Historic Heights

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway rolls back into service following extensive enhancements.

hree long blasts from the train whistle announce the start of The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway’s nine-mile journey from Manitou Depot to the summit of Pikes Peak. The cars are filled with excited adventurers, and a symphony of chatter, laughter, and constant admiration of the changing scenery builds as the train rounds each bend in the tracks.

The Cog passes through boulder-strewn canyons and past sparkling waterfalls, skirts historic sites such as a 100-yearold hydroelectric plant, and overlooks reservoirs and a natural lake. Native wildlife such as elk, deer, and bighorn sheep are frequently seen along the route. The train passes through the Pike National Forest, eventually rising above timberline and into the snowfields of the tundra. Soon riders will get their first glimpse of the imposing summit of Pikes Peak. A 2,000-yearold bristlecone pine tree can be viewed as the train nears its destination. Yellow-bellied marmots can also often be observed contentedly sunning themselves on the rocks near the summit.

1888 - The Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway is incorporated.

1890 - The railway is completed.

1890 - The first three steam engines from Baldwin Locomotive Works are delivered. During the steam era, there are a total of six engines.

1891 - The Cog is opened to the public.

JUNE 16

1926 - Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose purchases the railway along with the streetcar system that runs to the station and Crystal Park Road.

1938 - The first gaspowered locomotive makes its inaugural run.

1939 - The first dieselelectric cars arrive.

The train’s conductors provide interesting commentary as the Cog climbs 7,600 feet during the roughly one-hour journey to the peak. There are only three cog railways in the United States and only a dozen throughout the world. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the world’s highest and longest. The railway uses a specially fitted cog and track to help it safely climb steep inclines, as well as slow its descent.

Surprisingly, Zebulon Pike never actually reached the summit of his namesake mountain. Millions of guests have successfully made the journey in the Cog’s history, however. The Cog began climbing Pikes Peak in 1891, when businessman Zalmon Simmons, owner of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company, built the original railway and opened it to the public. Back then a ticket on the Cog cost $5, a considerable sum in those days. In 1925, Spencer Penrose, founder of The Broadmoor hotel, purchased the Cog from Simmons, and led the way to it becoming one of Colorado’s most iconic attractions.

The Cog nearly wound to a full stop in 2017, however, when a periodic evaluation of the railway revealed the need for extensive maintenance. True to the spirit of The Broadmoor’s longtime ownership and stewardship of the railway, the decision was made to invest more than $100 million to completely overhaul and modernize the beloved Cog.

New tracks, a combination of new and refurbished trains, advanced technology, a completely renovated depot, and the City of Colorado Springs' new Pikes Peak Summit House Complex are among the numerous embellishments. After being closed for more than three

Spencer Wren, who served as the Cog’s general manager for more than forty years, retired in January 2022, as soon as he was confident that the new operation was up and running smoothly. “I’m delighted and honored to be part of the history of the Cog Railway,” Wren says. “It’s top-notch!”

His successor, Ted Johnston, is focused on continuing the historic Cog’s legacy. “Customers are once more enjoying the experience of riding to the summit of a 14,115-foot mountain by rail,” he says.

Both refurbished and new trains now chug to the summit of Pikes Peak. The newly refurbished conveyances are self-contained, with the engine and passenger cars all part of one unit. In contrast, the new trains, manufactured in Switzerland, consist of passenger coaches and separate locomotives. A Swiss team accompanied the new trains to Colorado and supervised putting them into operation. Three passing sidings allow the trains to use radio control to safely and efficiently pass each other while traveling up and down the mountain.

Nearing the summit, the train chugs just past the newly built Pikes Peak Summit House Complex and stops atop America’s Mountain at 14,115 feet. Temperatures can range from balmy to frigid, so riders should be prepared for everything from T-shirt weather to temperatures cold enough for jackets, hats, and gloves.

Another historic attraction not to be missed is a splendid natural wonder: The Broadmoor’s Seven Falls and South Cheyenne Canyon. This scenic delight was called "the Grandest One Mile in Colorado” by the Ames Guide in 1912, and this designation still rings true today. Celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2023, Seven Falls has been a treasured piece of Colorado Springs history that is a truly inspirational destination.

A sojourn there is so much more than just a visit to a waterfall. The enclave is reminiscent of an otherworldly, mystical garden that is a feast for the senses. The combination of the sound of rushing water, the sight of the variety of flora and fauna, the scent of the ever-present dampness mixed with fresh mountain air, and the sheer beauty of the surroundings is a true balm for the soul.

A short walk on a nature path, or a complimentary shuttle ride takes visitors from The Broadmoor to the park entrance. The series of seven waterfalls is located in a 1,250-foot-wall box canyon, and tumbles over 180 feet through seven distinct leaps of sparkling water. The falls can be accessed either by traversing 224 steps, hiking the one-mile trail, or by zipping up 14 stories to the Eagle’s Nest observation platform via a swift elevator ride.

This feeling encompasses several qualities, beginning with the natural beauty that surrounds us, the impeccable golf links, and the Olmsted-designed gardens and landscaping.

Within this dreamy setting are layers upon layers of the finest that life has to offer, including Colorado’s only Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond restaurant, a Forbes Five-Star spa, the East Course (which has hosted seven USGA championships, with the eighth scheduled for 2025), a top-notch tennis facility, four outdoor and indoor pools, premier fly fishing, and one of the foremost collections of Western American art on the planet.

And while these unique amenities and The Broadmoor’s storied history draw guests from around the globe—as they have for more than a century—there are underlying qualities of hospitality, togetherness, and simple enjoyments many families sense as soon as they arrive. It’s one reason many guests have made cherished memories here and have even incorporated the resort into their own traditions.

A Lasting Impression

For some it began with the lasting impression it made on them in their youth. Bill Prentiss first came to The Broadmoor in 1958, when he was 11 years old.

“That week made an indelible impression on me, and when our two boys were young, we brought them to The Broadmoor,” Prentiss says. “In the last few years, we made Colorado Springs our summer home. We found a place close by, and each year part of our family—now grown children and grandchildren—visit us in Colorado, which always includes time at The Broadmoor.”

Home Away from Home

Richard Coon first came to The Broadmoor in the late 1960s, as a kid. “My dad started playing in The Broadmoor Invitation golf tournament, so we made it a family vacation. We really had fun—and we still do! I’ve been coming back here with my own family since 1982.”

The Coons liked it so much that they now have a home at The Broadmoor, in the West Residences. “I think it’s been about fifteen years,” says wife Karla Coon. “We live here part-time, literally on the property.

“We spend about eighty or ninety nights a year here,” says Richard. We enjoy both the summers and winters here. Our grandkids come now, so that’s four generations!”

For Tom White, it was his love of hockey. “My first visit to The Broadmoor in 1972 was to see Colorado College play Denver University in hockey. The strategy for DU fans was to spend the afternoon in the Golden Bee and make it to the Ice Arena by the lake around 7 p.m. The Bee was smaller then, and we made the most of their yards of beer.

“After the game, a glint of sanity suggested it may be better to take a room rather than try to make it back to Denver. The front desk said they had a room available, but they could not accept my credit card. Panic was short-lived, though, when the clerk said: ‘But we would be happy to bill you.’ The bill came, I paid it, and we have been friends ever since. Two years from now, I’ll have been coming here for fifty years.”

A Dream Wedding Destination

Among its many draws, the inspired setting of The Broadmoor is nothing if not romantic.

“The lake holds special memories for Karla and me,” says Richard Coon. “I came up to The Broadmoor with my family in 1984, and then she came up a few days later, only for a couple of days, but we were walking the lake one night and that’s when I knew that I was going to ask her to marry me. About a month later I asked her, and that was thirty-six years ago.”

For Richard and Karla’s daughter, her wedding was a dream come true.

“When our daughter, Bailey, was little,” Karla Coon recalls, “she spent so much time in the pool—right where the Main Terrace is now— which makes me think back when Bailey was probably 6. She was a well-behaved young lady, and we could take her to the Penrose Room, and we’d all get dressed up. Richard would take her to the dance floor. She just thought she was a princess.

“She had no doubt,” Coon continues, “that The Broadmoor was where she was going to get married, and she got married in an outdoor ceremony right there, outside on the Main Terrace, where it covers the pool that she spent so many hours swimming in. And talk about coming full circle—the father-daughter dance at the wedding reception brought me back to their time on the dance floor at the Penrose Room.”

Bill Prentiss and his bride married close to home, so The Broadmoor was their post-ceremony destination.

“The pull of The Broadmoor would bring me back in 1971 on my honeymoon. My wife and I stayed on the sixth floor of the South Tower in a room facing Cheyenne Mountain. I believe we still have the old key to that room. Each day the curtains would be drawn back to reveal the vision of sunrise on the mountain.”

Of course, there are plenty of other occasions, too, that are best celebrated with a large helping of elegance and pizzazz.

“We have enjoyed so many of our special family events there,” Tom White recalls, “birthdays, anniversaries, spring break. I loved staying on the fourth floor of the original hotel. One year, for my birthday, we reserved the whole floor for family and friends!”

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

The centerpiece of Broadmoor celebrations has always been memorable fine dining experiences, going back to founder Spencer Penrose himself, whose philosophy of food was drawn from the man who revolutionized the culinary arts, Auguste Escoffier. The Broadmoor’s first executive chef, Louis Stratta, was a protégé of Escoffier. When Stratta was hired by The Broadmoor in 1918, he incorporated his mentor’s emphasis on top-quality ingredients, innovative recipes, and service techniques—standards that remain to this day.

Stratta’s original dining room is now the featured breakfast and brunch venue, as Bill Prentiss recalls.

“My mother and aunt would have breakfast at the Lake Terrace Dining Room every morning before sauntering out to the lake patio to sit and take in the grandeur. The Broadmoor became an Eden of sorts to both of them. They came back many times. To them, The Broadmoor was an early glimpse of heaven.”

During White’s first visit, he was captured by the camaraderie and libations.

“Part of our [Denver University] group was Mr. J. J. Johnston, a practicing lawyer in Denver and law professor at DU. J.J. was a longtime and devout DU hockey fan. While having beer at the Bee with J.J., I noticed his cool mug with his name on it. He explained the mug club [officially known as the Order of the Pewter Tankard] and how someone needs to die before a new person could be invited. Long story short, it took me thirty years, but I am in. It’s been a lifetime since then, and I have so many wonderful memories of The Broadmoor.”

Links in Time

And there’s no better way to work up an appetite than a round of golf on one of The Broadmoor’s fine courses.

For Prentiss, The Broadmoor was where he got hooked on the game.

“During a week in August of ’63, one rainy afternoon, from a distance through the drizzle, I saw a lone golfer hitting balls on the practice field,” he says. “I asked who that might be and was told it was Dow Finsterwald. He was a well-known winning professional on the PGA TOUR, and he was also the head golf professional at The Broadmoor. For a closer look, I walked down to the range and stood about thirty yards away. Mr. Finsterwald noticed me ... ‘Don’t stand there in the rain. You can use my umbrella.’ So I watched as he hit 5-irons and 4-irons to his caddie some 190 yards out, never missing more than a couple of paces left or right. That was another Broadmoor lifetime experience! My family returned again in 1967, and this time I brought my clubs and played on the East and the West courses. From that point on, golf would be an indispensable part of my visits.”

Golf played a role in White’s enchantment as well.

“I used to golf quite a bit, for fun and for business. I taught both my sons the game and loved to watch their competitive brotherly matches through the years.”

For Coon, The Broadmoor Invitation still casts a spell.

“Four hundred people playing in a golf tournament on both courses. It was one of the best amateur tournaments anywhere,” he says. “A lot of very famous amateurs would fly here. You’d qualify by stroke play for thirty-six holes to get into the match play for the championship. The format has changed now, but it’s still very popular.”

Taken as a whole, the years here are filled with quintessential moments. Clearly, Mr. Penrose’s vision of creating the “most wonderful hotel in the West—the most wonderful in the United States” is still with us, as the resort continually improves to maintain its status as the longest running Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort on the planet.

And, while many of our fondest memories have evolved into something else today, the most important aspect remains unchanged— the people. There is no better feeling than running into the familiar faces of those who make The Broadmoor tick, from the bellhops and housekeepers to the maître d’s and wait staff, as well as management and leadership. Add to that planning a destination wedding in Colorado Springs while you’re living in Los Angeles in the first year of business school— while your fiancé is living in Nashville and your parents are in Denver—and you’ve got the challenge of the Schoelzel-DiNardo wedding.

In light of that, you wouldn’t expect bride Hillary Schoelzel to say she misses the planning process. But she says she genuinely does. She says she misses her weekly talks with her wedding planner and the staff at The Broadmoor, where she held her wedding weekend.

That’s just one of the many things that Schoelzel says makes The Broadmoor stand out as a wedding venue. Her full list of reasons is long, but at the top is the support and involvement she experienced from the resort’s staff, from day one of planning all the way through today, as she contemplates going back to The Broadmoor for an anniversary getaway. In particular, Schoelzel says she developed a meaningful bond with The Broadmoor’s director of conferences and catering, Pierre Stone.

“She was always so upbeat and happy and genuinely excited for our wedding that it made us feel genuinely excited, too,” Schoelzel says. “She had an amazing attention to detail. She would think of things we never would have thought of on our own, and she just made the whole process totally delightful. Even though we were living in different places, it went smoothly.”

Schoelzel and her fiancé, Erik DiNardo, wanted to get married at The Broadmoor for three reasons. First, the sprawling resort in Colorado Springs has been a

special place for Schoelzel’s Colorado-based family since she was a child. She remembers visiting the grounds for her grandparents’ birthdays and other big events. Her grandparents spent their honeymoon there, and so did her aunt and uncle.

Then there was DiNardo’s family, primarily in Boston, and the couple’s friends scattered across the country. They wanted to pick

a destination that felt like a vacation for guests, too. “Where friends would be excited to come—a special trip for them, a whole weekend,” Schoelzel says.

The Broadmoor more than delivered. Their wedding weekend also included a welcome dinner, bowling at Play, golfing, a cabana pool party, and a send-off brunch.

“We wanted to make sure our guests had a nice time, and from start to finish, The Broadmoor totally took care of us and our guests. Every event was so beautiful and went off smoothly,” Schoelzel says. “The ceremony and reception was the reason we were all there, but the surrounding moments and events leading up to and even after the wedding were perfect.”

The beauty of the hotel was the third characteristic that made The Broadmoor stand out, Schoelzel says. She envisioned a European aesthetic, and the pink-hued buildings and elegant atmosphere, all set against a mountain backdrop, provided the ideal environment.

THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS HAVE BROUGHT remarkable changes to the golf scene at Sea Island, The Broadmoor’s sister property located on the Georgia coast. Among these additions are an eighteen-hole Speedway putting course; six cottages, a pool, pool house, and ocean-view golf practice facilities at The Lodge; and the redesign of the Plantation Course. Yet the pièce de résistance for instruction and improvement is the new Golf Performance Center (GPC).

“The GPC is dedicated to helping golfers play better and enjoy the game of golf with a holistic, comprehensive approach, regardless of their skill level,” says Director of Golf Brannen Veal. “This new facility combines the latest cutting-edge technology with the finest teachers in the country, taking what we

provide to an even higher level than before.”

Within the 17,000-square-foot facility are six instruction and club-fitting bays, a putting studio designed by world-renowned putting instructor Phil Kenyon, a fully equipped golf club workshop, a fitness center with locker rooms, a spacious retail area, and both indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces for groups.

“Years ago, a decision was made to take a holistic approach to golf performance and to use experts in every area of the game to give our students the same kind of experience

Tour players get on a weekly basis,” says Craig Allan, GPC director.

“We outgrew our facilities from a space and capability perspective—in terms of being able to provide the level of service and technology required to remain a leader in this industry.

This left two options: Start over in the existing facility or build something brand-new. After collaborating with our leadership and laying out our long-term goals, it became clear that a new facility was the direction we needed to take.

“The new building has all the latest technology, which can be intimidating to some, so it was very important that it was designed to be welcoming and have an atmosphere of inclusiveness,” Allan says.

“We want people to feel energized about golf when they come here. We cater our programs to all golfers, from those just starting the game all the way to PGA TOUR professionals. These instructional programs are specific to the golfer’s needs and use all the tools in our toolbox, including the new technology in the bays. Our goal is to help all golfers.”

Allan was determined that the facility’s layout be convenient to navigate, with a logical progression from the moment a person checks in.

“If you intend to work out, the locker room is immediately across the hall,” Allan says. “If you’re in the putting studio and want to go to the putting green, it’s next to the building on that side. If you’re in the club-fitting area and want to go out under the canopy, it’s adjacent to that side of the building. If you’re on the group veranda and want to go to the group bay to enjoy the simulator, it’s conveniently located down the stairs, right below.”

Instruction

Irish-born instructor Justin Parsons joined the GPC staff as an Elite Instructor after nearly a decade as director of instruction at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Dubai. A specialist in 3D analysis and functional movement screening, he has worked with leading players on the PGA, European, and Asian tours.

“What I’ve always wanted was for golfers to be able to undertake whatever discipline they

need in a professional setting,” Parsons says. “At the GPC, a player can do that, working on fitness in the morning, moving onto swing analysis or some in-depth putting work or club fitting.”

He adds that the facility’s aesthetic and relaxing atmosphere help golfers get into the right frame of mind. “That’s where GPC personnel factor in great instructors like Randy Myers and Gale Peterson,” he says. “When I see them interacting with students and putting them at ease, I realize why the center has been so successful. They have the capacity to humanize what we do, to make people comfortable very quickly.”

NEW PLANTATION COURSE IS A Historic Tribute

“Since opening in October 2019, the Plantation Course has received rave reviews from PGA TOUR players, Sea Island members, and guests,” says Sea Island Golf Director Brannen Veal. “Drawing from more than thirty years of living and playing at Sea Island, Mark and Davis Love III built a golf course that is fun and challenging and provides amazing visuals on all eighteen holes.”

Sea Island’s history as a golf resort began with the Plantation Nine, created by Walter Travis in 1928. Seventy years later, Rees Jones merged the Retreat Nine (designed by Dick Wilson) and the original layout to create the eighteen-hole Plantation Course, a companion track to the resort’s highly regarded Seaside Course.

Working with Love Golf Design architect Scot Sherman, the Loves created a challenging layout with expanded views of the ocean and St. Simons Sound, and spiced it with unmistakable historic features. Travis’ signature “chocolate drop” mounds dot fairways. Railroad ties like those fronting the second green evoke memories of Pete Dye. Centered fairway bunkers are a nod to the work of Seth Raynor and C.B. MacDonald. Famous Golden Age greens are faithfully replicated, such as the Redan, Biarritz, Thumbprint, and Punchbowl. And the Plantation’s 10th hole sports a Principal’s Nose bunker like the one on St. Andrews’ Old Course.

modern technology is also essential in the putting studio.

“We hired Phil Kenyon, arguably the world’s best putting instructor, as our director of putting, and we collaborated with him to design our new state-ofthe-art studio,” Allan says.

“His right-hand man, David Angelotti, operates the studio on a daily basis and provides people with an experience they can’t get anywhere else—from the standpoint of technology, experience, and level of instruction.” The putting studio has a Zen Greenstage platform that recreates various slopes a player can encounter, along with cameras to analyze the putting stroke and subsequent roll of the ball. A PuttView system projects the correct track for the ball—a valuable tool in learning to read greens.

Brian Harman, two-time PGA TOUR winner, has a relationship with Sea Island that dates back to his junior days when he worked with Jack Lumpkin, who prior to his passing served as senior director of instruction. Harman continues to work with GPC team members,

“The physical, technical, and mental aspects of the game are interlinked. I take a keen interest in all of them ... and I like our ability to be multifaceted in our approach to someone’s instruction.”

GATHERINGS

Parsons, and Allan. “Sea Island has always been at the forefront of golf destinations and golf instruction,” Harman says. “Now they have a golf instruction facility on the forefront as far as technology.

Fitness

The GPC’s gym was designed to inspire. Light and airy with thoughtfully placed equipment, its windows and doors open onto a patio that overlooks the driving range, St. Simons Sound, and the ocean beyond. “It’s a very energizing setting and has been extremely well-received by golfers,” Allan says.

Created to resemble the PGA TOUR Fitness Trailer that players utilize on the road, the gym is the domain of Director of Golf Fitness Randy Myers and Senior Golf Fitness Specialist Tom Hemmings. Because of its configuration, it’s available only by appointment. “We’ve created an environment in which golfers can be evaluated and put on a plan they can do at home,” Myers says. “Unlike a traditional gym, we have more space for functional movements with kettlebells, cable machines, and tubing—or swinging a golf club. In addition, the Technogym fitness equipment allows us to monitor cardiovascular health and stamina.”

Parsons says he is convinced that fitness is “where some of the magic happens,” as coaches are able to make a person’s body more flexible, more stable, stronger, faster—whatever is needed. “You can see a

big transference over to the technical side of a person’s game when the physical side becomes more able,” he explains.

Mental fitness is also crucial to a successful round, and that is also addressed at the GPC. Dr. Morris Pickens, a sports psychologist specializing in competitive performance enhancement, has his office there. His golf students have won four major championships, twenty-seven PGA TOUR events, one NCAA championship, and countless amateur victories.

Club Fitting

The new GPC’s club-fitting space has a large double bay where two fitters can work side-by-side in an area that houses all the fitting tools in one place. The walls are lined with fitting clubs and a large array of custom shafts. Fitters can still take golfers out on the grass for a real-world experience, too. Immediately across the hall from the bay is the workshop, so quick adjustments can easily be made during a fitting session. The new, larger workshop has all the machines necessary to dial in any club, from loft and lie to swing weight scales to grinders and everything in between. Most importantly, the team that uses them includes four full-time club fitters with more than fifty combined years of experience. The GPC fitters are perennially ranked by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as some of the top club fitters in America.

“One of the wonderful aspects of the club-fitting program is Craig Allan, who has a very diagnostic and honest approach to club fitting,” Parsons says. “He uses his expertise along with the latest technology to give clients information about what does and does not work for them. And Craig’s expertise is being passed on to a team of club fitters who have learned to value putting the right equipment in every player’s hands.”

Group Gatherings

While the GPC is well-equipped to provide each golfer with an individualized experience, the facility also offers spaces that were especially designed for groups. A meeting area and patio are located on the second floor, with views of the practice range and St. Simons Sound beyond that.

“The group meeting space is beautiful, with a twelve-seat table overlooking the sound. Adjacent to it is a veranda facing the sunset,” Allan says.

It’s an ideal space for events, and it complements the other areas at the GPC that accommodate gatherings. For example, below is a double bay where players can hit out to the range through the large door or, inside, hit into a simulator. “Behind the simulator, we have comfortable seating and a bar-height table for twelve,” Allan says. “It’s a fun space that can be used by individuals or groups during or after hours.”

In 1916, Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose invited a select group of drivers to compete for the fastest time on a newly constructed road to the summit of Pikes Peak. Hoping the event would drive tourism to Colorado Springs, Mr. Penrose welcomed more than 600 media outlets to that inaugural run.

This year, the 100th running of the race now known as The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is expected to draw more than 30,000 racing fans participating in the pre-race street party and events leading up to the big day. With multiple divisions of vehicles entered into the invitational event, twelve miles of road, and 156 turns culminating above 14,000 feet, witnessing the mountaintop finish of the “Race to the Clouds” is a bucket list item for racing fans.

“Every year we have custom cars built just for Pikes Peak,” says Lisa Haight, event coordinator and historian for The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. “Whether it’s Acura or Bentley, there are some one-ofa-kind cars that are really exciting to see.”

Haight has been attending race day since she was a child and cheering on her father, Nick Sanborn, a five-time winner of the Stock Car division. She shares her tips for enjoying the race and the exciting events leading up to it.

Our best advice for race day is be prepared. Plan on an early start, as limited parking determines race-day ticket sales. Since the race is in a national forest, there are no bleachers or viewing stands. Instead, pack a picnic and camping chairs and supplies for any kind of weather: That means sunscreen, rain jackets, plenty of layers, plus food and water for the day. For those who want the flexibility of leaving before the end of the race (projected around 5 p.m.), park in the lot at the starting line. Otherwise, all cars along the racecourse will be there until completion.

“Whether it’s race day or one of the practice runs, it’s pretty amazing to be up there before the sun comes up,” Haight says. “Watching the sun come up on Pikes Peak? It’s an iconic moment.”

A World of Inspiration

Penrose Heritage Museum showcases the passions and possessions of Broadmoor founders Spencer and Julie Penrose.

and philanthropists Spencer and Julie Penrose built The Broadmoor in 1918. The resort is one of many regional attractions the couple created in the first half of the 20th century, including Pauline Chapel, The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, and Penrose Heritage Museum.

Spencer and Julie Penrose married in London in 1906. They honeymooned throughout Europe and spent the next thirty years experiencing the best resorts, restaurants, shops, and excursions the world had to offer. They made recurring trips to Europe, Asia, and Africa each fall. They traveled by train in Pullman cars to America’s East and West Coast hotels.

From these ports, they sailed on luxury steamships. Their favorite destinations were New York City, Paris, Brussels, and Honolulu. The Penroses were also fond of China, Japan, and Egypt, countries they visited many times. The Penroses enjoyed exploring the natural and cultural wonders of foreign lands and visited more than thirty countries.

During their travels, Mrs. Penrose collected fine china, stylish clothes, furs, and magnificent works of art. Mr. Penrose collected historical armaments, riding equipment, and alcohol. (During Prohibition, he famously stockpiled large stashes of liquor in secret locations around The Broadmoor. Many of these bottles are on display in Bottle Alley, next to La Taverne restaurant.) In addition to material goods, the Penroses brought back inspiration for their very own

resort in Colorado Springs.

The Broadmoor opened on June 29, 1918. It combined everything the Penroses loved about their travels across the globe. The Broadmoor’s Mediterranean-inspired architecture, ceiling frescoes painted by Italian artisans, bamboo furniture imported from Hong Kong, and Turkish baths gave the property its unique flair.

Spencer Penrose promoted the resort and the region through sport. The Broadmoor opened with a golf course—a rarity at that time—and seventy-five miles of horseback riding trails. In the 1920s and ’30s, Mr. Penrose added polo fields, shuffleboard, fishing, and an indoor riding arena. He even built a stadium to host professional football games and the rodeo he started in 1937.

St. Moritz Winter Olympic Games, where they saw 15-year-old Sonja Henie win the gold medal in women’s figure skating, they accurately predicted that figure skating would become immensely popular in the United States. Mr. Penrose converted the indoor riding arena into The Broadmoor Ice Palace in a mere twenty-four hours at a cost of $200,000. Figure skating, hockey, and even skiing were among The Broadmoor’s most popular activities. To this day, The Broadmoor welcomes athletic competitions from across the nation and the world in a city that has become an epicenter of amateur Olympic and Paralympic sport.

Julie Penrose made sure visitors to the resort and the city had access to fine art, music, and theater through her creation of Broadmoor Art Academy in 1919. She also took pride in providing a sanctuary of spiritual solace. That same year, Mrs. Penrose built and named Pauline Chapel after her only granddaughter. She adorned the chapel with religious paintings and relics purchased in Europe. It was her gift to The Broadmoor and the surrounding neighborhood. Pauline Chapel features three stained glass windows Mrs. Penrose

commissioned in 1948. The windows of Italian Renaissance design and jeweltoned colors indicative of the Middle Ages commemorate the deaths of her young son Jimmie, husband Spencer, and her parents.

Mrs. Penrose expanded The Broadmoor’s amenities again in 1941 with her El Pomar Carriage Museum, which she created to display the collection of carriages the Penroses owned. The museum was a modern building designed by Bauhaus architect Jan Ruhtenberg, who made small-scale replicas of the carriages, artfully arranged them, and designed an oval-shaped building around them. The building was torn down in 2004.

Today, the museum is next to Broadmoor Hall and is known as Penrose Heritage Museum. In addition to the Penrose carriages, the museum exhibits personal artifacts of the Penroses and a collection of race cars, race footage, and memorabilia from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, started by Mr. Penrose in 1916. This year, the museum is celebrating its 80th anniversary with brand-new exhibits. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the enduring legacy of Spencer and Julie Penrose through never-before-seen garments and personal affects, photographs, home film footage, and correspondence. Thirty carriages, fifteen race cars, iconic Penrose hats and outfits, personal treasures, historic Broadmoor menus, and personal letters tell the story of the founders of The Broadmoor and prominent Colorado Springs citizens

Penrose Heritage Museum is owned and operated by El Pomar Foundation, the nonprofit grant-making organization founded by the Penroses in 1937. Located next to Broadmoor Hall, the museum is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m.) Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Admission is complimentary. World-Class Entertainment

HOSTING THE BIGGEST ACTS THAT COME through the West, The Broadmoor World Arena is a key component to entertainment in Colorado Springs. The multipurpose venue is where visitors could catch future Olympians practicing their triple axels, see monster trucks performing jumps and other tricks, or snag seats for Luke Combs on tour.

A Beacon for the Arts

FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, THE FINE Arts Center at Colorado College (FAC) has been a welcoming home to the arts in the Colorado Springs community. Focusing on the cultural legacy of the West, the FAC supports the fine arts, theater, and education much in the way its founder, Julie Penrose, imagined.

Mrs. Penrose, wife of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose, created The Broadmoor Art Academy in 1919. It was originally housed in their donated residence. Mrs. Penrose, an avid art collector, also wanted an art school where students from around the country would come to Colorado Springs to learn to paint en plein air. Master artists came to teach smallgroup classes at the Garden of the Gods.

As far back as 1926, The Broadmoor Art Academy partnered with Colorado College, a relationship that has only strengthened over the years. In 2017, the FAC entered an historic partnership with the college in a strategic partnership that promotes coursework collaboration and exposes students to professionals in myriad disciplines.

EXPERIENCING THE RUSH THAT COMES FROM entering an Olympic stadium filled with thousands of cheering fans waving the flags of more than 100 countries is something only the most elite athletes can claim. Until now.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs created a multimedia experience designed to allow fans of all ages to feel like an Olympian for a few hours.

“It takes upwards of a decade to make it to the Games, and then comes this moment walking into the stadium and getting that joyful celebratory experience,” says Michelle Dusserre Farrell, vice president of athlete engagement at the USO&P Museum and an Olympic silver medal winner herself as part of the 1984 U.S. gymnastics team. “This event is bigger than any one person, and we worked hard at crafting the exhibit experience to share that moment.”

The USO&P Museum celebrated its grand opening in 2020. The 60,000-square-foot facility contains a vast collection of Olympic memorabilia and the official Team USA Hall of Fame. But the museum also delivers the experience of being an Olympian, emphasizing what it takes for Paralympic and Olympic athletes to simply make it to the Games.

“But we also want to convey to the visitor ‘the grind’—just how hard it is to make the team and make it to the Games,” Dusserre Farrell says.

Colorado Springs, fondly known as “Olympic City, USA” is home to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committees and the flagship U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. The effort to build a permanent museum here began in 2013 with an official groundbreaking on the site in 2017.

Critical to the design were accessibility considerations of athletes and visitors. Relying on gently sloping ramps, there’s not a single stair in the museum. “We wanted this to be one of the

most accessible museums in the world,” says Tommy Schield, director of communications and marketing at the USO&P Museum.

It’s not just about the stairs, adds Dusserre Farrell, stressing that the experience is the same for visitors regardless of abilities. Her own daughter, a wheelchair basketball athlete at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was born with spina bifida. “Here, the museum experience is the same for everyone,” she says.

And that experience begins with getting “credentials” for the day. Visitors will choose their favorite Olympic and Paralympic athletes and events, which get included in their interactive chip credentials. Then, the displays and exhibitions will sense your interests and tailor your experience.

The visit begins in the Hall of Fame, and from there, the museum will take visitors on their own Olympic journeys. Finally, visitors will pause in the hallway before entering the Olympic stadium and hearing the roar of the crowd.

“This is what it really feels like to be part of Team USA,” says Dusserre Farrell. “It’s an incredibly unique experience the museum has created. It gives me chills just thinking about it.”

The Broadmoor’s annual giant gingerbread creations delight guests with over-the-top designs.

THE BROADMOOR’S BAKING AND PASTRY TEAM MAKE LIKE elves each holiday season, working from detailed drawings and a supersized list of ingredients to bake, construct, and decorate a life-sized gingerbread creation in the upper lobby of Broadmoor Main.

The team has made everything from a recreation of Santa’s Workshop—complete with multicolored gingerbread bricks and poured-sugar windowpanes—a race car celebrating The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a train engine in honor of The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, and a fanciful take on a Broadmoor cottage. While each year’s theme is a surprise until it’s unveiled in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the meticulously detailed creations never fail to entice visitors to stop for a closer look.

“It wows you in its size, and then you start paying attention to the detail work—all the trimming, the decorative dough work, the poured sugar, and the giant carved chocolate piece over the mantle,” says Executive Chef David Patterson. “It’s a real showpiece for a baker’s art.”

It takes about a month to bake, measure, and cut all the pieces, and another five days to assemble. Everything, the baked goods to the candy canes and pulled-sugar ribbons, is made in-house by The Broadmoor’s culinary staff. The team didn’t rest on its laurels once the final gumdrop was placed, however. They immediately began sketching next year’s even larger design while ideas are fresh.

Says Chef Patterson: “We hope it will be a new tradition for years to come.”
