T H E B ROA DM OO R G A L A W EEK EN D June 1–3

On June 1, 1918, exactly four weeks before The Broadmoor’s official unveiling on June 29, Spencer and Julie Penrose opened the doors to 200 of their closest friends for a preview. The party included presidents, politicians and notables from around the country. Now, join us on the same date a century later and relive the excitement that the first guests experienced when they walked through the doors and welcomed a new age in hospitality. The weekend-long Gala celebration includes a Prohibition Era Cocktail Party on Friday evening, followed by an afterparty Cabaret with live entertainment featuring Tracksuit Wedding. On Saturday, join us for an open house at Mr. and Mrs. Penrose’s home, special history tours and lectures. A grand reception and Gala Dinner follows that evening, with entertainment by the Wayne Foster Show Band. For details, visit Broadmoor.com/ centennial/centennial-gala

REFRESHED, RENEWED, REIMAGINED Exciting new dining options, shops, amenities and more are waiting for you at The Broadmoor.

Modern amenities, classic comfort

T

he rooms and suites in the historic Broadmoor Main are sporting a new look and color palette to complement those of Broadmoor West. While light and airy, the historic feel of the original building has not been lost, just made more warm and welcoming. The lobby of Main, while maintaining all the familiar historic aspects, is now more spacious. The grand staircase to the mezzanine level now floats ethereally upward, unencumbered by surrounding walls. Just past it is a lobby space with comfortable chairs, sofas and two new fireplaces. The space that once housed Cheyenne Gourmet has taken

on the look and feel reminiscent of the finest classic Parisian pâtisseries. Honoring Mrs. Penrose and her love of entertaining friends, we have returned to the name Café Julie’s. This is a breathtaking gathering place featuring signature coffee and espresso, as well as exclusive handmade chocolates from the new chocolate kitchen within the café. Artisan breads, specialty pastries, salads and other delights are available to take out or enjoy at banquettes and tables both inside and outdoors in a special courtyard area on the retail plaza overlooking the cascading waterfall and fountain. Evenings, Café Julie’s offers a selection of wines and The Broadmoor’s exclusive Prospector’s Pick Kolsch beer. La Taverne returns to a more traditional steakhouse with an inviting entry and waiting area. Lake Terrace Dining Room sports new and exciting presentations for weekday buffet breakfast and our award-winning Sunday Brunch.

everal new shops now grace The Broadmoor Retail Plaza between Broadmoor Main and South Tower. Reminiscent of a piazza in Italy – shaded, tree-lined and welcoming – guests find not only favorite shops like Great Republic, Rutledge’s Men’s Shop, Base Camp and The Cosmetic Shop, but an exquisite new space for The Broadmoor Jewelry Company, as well as a spacious store exclusively featuring Peter Millar clothing. The Centennial Shop not only is home for tickets and merchandise for the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, but also where gifts can be found to celebrate our Centennial, including our new “The Broadmoor Story” pictorial history book. Within Café Julie’s, guests will find Broadmoor-branded products created by our culinary team. The Golf Shop has a new look and feel, making it easier to find everything you need for your playing pleasure, including Callaway Rogue clubs that feature state-of-the-art technology, both for rent and for sale.

The Original Ross Course Donald Ross designed the first Broadmoor golf course in 1917. Born in Dornoch, Scotland in 1872, Ross began his golf career as a player, winning three North and South Opens (1903, 1905, 1906), two Massachusetts Opens (1905, 1911) and finishing fifth in the 1903 United States Open. As his fame grew, Ross began to incorporate what he learned as a player into course design, where he became noted for the naturalness of his course layouts.

he look and feel of the Golf Club now celebrates the 100-year legacy of the tournaments and golfing greats that shaped the history of our storied courses. The entryway welcomes guests and members in exquisite style. The hallways are lined with displays and cases that tell the story of how golf came to be, from course designers Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones Sr. to the legendary golfers who called The Broadmoor home. Learn about the history of the soon-to-be eight USGA Championships that have called the East Course home, the men’s and women’s Broadmoor Invitation events, the Walker Cup, and NCAA Championships that introduced shining stars like Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam, to name just two in a galaxy of famous names who challenged and won championships on our courses. Even the dining experience is new as we introduce The Grille. Expanded and reimagined, this is where some of The Broadmoor’s classic dining favorites now reside in a space that inspires not only with its design, but with an impressive and expansive new bar. Besides the cuisine, the highlight of The Grille is the unobstructed view of the mountains, both from within the restaurant as well as from the outdoor seating on the patio on warm Colorado days and comfortable summer evenings. On July 4, 1918, the first significant golf match was held featuring Long Jim Barnes, The Broadmoor’s first Golf Professional, teamed with Chick Evans, the Amateur and Open champion. They were paired against Jock Hutchinson and Warren Wood, two top pros of the day. All admission receipts and golf equipment sales, plus $10,000 added by Mr. Penrose, went to the Red Cross drive.

As shown in the photo below of Jock Hutchinson playing in the 1924 Broadmoor Invitation, the conditions on and around the golf course were not always ideal. It’s understandable, as some original parts of the land where the golf courses were built were actually cow pastures. Additionally, modern irrigation technology was not available, making natural rainfall very important in course conditioning.
