Vietnam Overview
The shape of Vietnam is like a bamboo pole with two baskets of rice perfectly balanced at either end. Coastal Vietnam offers spectacular beaches, historical and diverse cities and towns, and a rich and varied cuisine. Inland Vietnam boasts rugged mountain ranges and misty tropical forests where the wild secrets and traditions of this historical land lay undiscovered. First and foremost, however, historically rich Vietnam is identified by a myriad of rich traditions and cultures of the 54 different ethnic peoples that call Vietnam their home. Whether you enjoy sightseeing, leisure activities, adventure tours, historical studies, or cultural journeys, Vietnam can provide it all.
Best time to go
Even though one can see tourists across the country throughout the year, the best time to visit Vietnam, for most westerners, is between October and April.
• Northern Pattern The North of Vietnam (north of Hue) has four distinctive seasons. It is cold and dry in the winter (can be as low as 8oC/45oF), and it is warm and humid in the summer (can be as high as 38oC/100oF). The rainy season starts in early June and ends in late September. The best time to visit the north, including Hanoi, is between November and April. month

2
• Central Pattern The Hai Van Mountain Pass (between Da Nang and Hue) forms the border for Central Vietnam‘s weather. To the North of the Hai Van Pass, the weather is sometimes misty and cold while the weather to the south of the mountain pass (all the way to Nha Trang) is clear and warm. Rainy season is from the middle of September to the middle January.

• Southern Pattern The South of Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, is near the equator and has two seasons: rainy and dry. The rainy season starts in May and goes until the end of October while the dry season starts in November and ends in April. During the rainy season, it can rain heavily and suddenly a few times a day for about an hour each time before it stops and the sun shines again. 8

High season: October to April Visas/passports
Your passport needs to have at least 6 months of validity from the date you enter Vietnam. Most visitors to Vietnam are required to obtain a visa. Visa on arrival (VOA) is often recommended for tourists entering the country by air plane but visas can also be obtained beforehand by applying to the closest consulate or embassy. Make sure to apply for a multiple entry visa if you wish to re-enter Vietnam i.e. you are planning on visiting the surrounding countries as well.
Land & Air travel
Vietnam shares land borders with China, Laos, and Cambodia. There are several border crossings open to foreigners to each of these three countries. There are three international airports in Vietnam: Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang City and Cam Ranh International Airport in Nha Trang City.
Low season: May to September Religion
Vietnam is a religious cocktail where all the world’s major faiths are represented. Buddhism is the dominant religion in Vietnam, though most Vietnamese people are considered a mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. About 10% of the country’s population is Catholic, and there are also communities of Protestants, Muslims and Hindus. Vietnam is also home to the unique religions of Hoa Hao and Cao Dai which make up approximately 5% of the country’s population.
Language
The national language of Vietnam is Vietnamese- in large cities and tourist areas one will find local people who can communicate in English but the proficiency levels will vary hugely. The younger generation learns English whereas some members of the older generation speak French. Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Italian and German are also spoken by some people. Vietnamese has many vowel sounds and six different tones which means it is difficult for most foreigners to pronounce correctly despite the fact that the Roman alphabet is now used. The same word can have many different meanings depending on the vowel and tone.

DA NANG & HOI AN Although the country’s fourth largest city is normally neglected by the majority of foreign travellers in favour of Hue and Hoi An, Da Nang has considerable charm in its own right. The city is a combination of the buzz of a larger city and magnificent beaches with spectacular restaurants. Gorgeous tree-lined boulevards, brightly coloured bridges, and luxurious beach side resorts are now beginning to attract the attention of more and more travellers. Hoi An has miraculously managed to retain a sense of charm and history that has escaped the destruction of successive wars. The town, once a riverside village, is now a tourist town packed with hotels, restaurants, bars, tailors, and souvenir shops. There is nothing quite like wandering about the old town, where traffic is banned in the evening. During the full moon, Hoi An turns into a magical land of silk lanterns, traditional food and interesting music concerts with singing and dancing.

Mui Ne, Phan Thiet Mui Ne Beach, an upcoming resort area known for its spectacular sand dunes, is regarded as one of Vietnam’s most beautiful beaches. More and more travellers from different parts of the world have put this beach on top of their lists as a vacation place. Compared with the other great beaches of Southeast Asia, Mui Ne is still relatively undiscovered so it is wise to go now before it places itself more firmly on the tourist map.

CAMBODIA Overview
Cambodia is a country of unique charm and cultural heritage known across the globe for its incredible natural beauty, breath-taking temples, fertile rice fields, and rich and fascinating history. Visiting the inspiring temples of Angkor will transport you into a world frozen in time and is certainly one of the world´s most spectacular sites, but this small, heart-shaped country has so much more to offer.
Best time to go
Cambodia has two distinct seasons. The rainy season, which runs from May to October, can see temperatures drop to 22oC/72oF and is generally accompanied with high humidity. Traveling during the rainy season has its benefits as the temple moats in Siem Reap are full, making for great photos. The dry season can be very dusty, but easier for walking through the jungle terrain around the temples. The temperature is a fairly steady 30-35oC/86-95oF during the daytime, although November to January often has cooler temperatures. The typical tropical climate has given Cambodia a wide variety of plants and animals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia has launched an e-visa system which enables visitors to apply for Cambodia tourist visas online. Another option for visitors to get visas is Visa on Arrival (VOA) which is valid in 30 days for most of nationalities. Not only at the International airport but also you can obtain VOA at the land border between with Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
Land & Air travel
Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Many new land crossings its neighbours have been open, offering overland connections with Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Phnom Penh International Airport (Pochentong) in Phnom Penh is the second largest in Cambodia. Siem Reap - Angkor International Airport is the largest and serves most international flights in and out of Cambodia. The other airports are in Sihanouk Ville and Battambang.
Religion
Theravada Buddhism is the official religion of Cambodia, which is practiced by more than 95% of the population. Islam is practiced by a small percentage of the population, mainly the Cham people residing near the Vietnam border, and Christianity and Hinduism are the religions of less than 1% of the Cambodian people.
Language
Cambodia’s national language is called Khmer and unlike the other languages of the region is not tonal. The written script originated in southern India. As in other former French colonies, some members of the educated older generation speak very good French while the younger generation prefers English. Outside the major centre of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap most people speak only Khmer but it is usually not a problem to find somebody who can speak basic English.
PHNOM PENH Founded in the mid 14th century by the Khmer people as a monastery, Phnom Penh replaced Angkor Thom as the country’s capital a century later. With the glimmering spires of the royal palace, the fluttering saffron of the monks’ robes, and the luscious location on the banks of the mighty Mekong, this is one of Asia’s most captivating cities.

Laos Overview
Laos is a landlocked nation- northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam and highlighted by the Mekong River which runs the entire length of the country. By watching the sunset while sailing on this mighty river, one can easily see why Laos is considered the Jewel of The Mekong River. Ancient villages, golden Buddhist temples, remarkably friendly people, and an outstanding natural setting all combine to offer a laid back, romantic charm unsurpassed anywhere else in the world.
Best time to go
The annual monsoon cycles that affect mainland Southeast Asia produce a ‘dry and wet monsoon climate’ with three basic seasons for most parts of Laos. Rainy season is from May through October, a cool dry season from November through February, and a hot dry season for March and April. Generally, monsoons occur at the same time across the country, although that time may vary significantly from one year to the next. The best time to travel to Laos is between October and March when the weather is nice and there is only a little rain. The nights are generally cooler than the days.

Approval is no longer required for visas to Laos. Foreign tourists are generally admitted into Laos for 30 days with a visa on arrival (obtained at most border check points) without prior authorization or for 30 days with a visa issued at a Laotian embassy. This costs 30-42 USD (depending on nationality) and requires the filling in of an application form and two passport photos. An additional 1 USD/person can be charged if you arrive on a weekend or public holiday. Two passport-size photos are required and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your expected departure date. Please contact your local Laos embassy for the most accurate information.
Land & Air travel
Laos shares borders with Myanmar and China to the north, Thailand to the west, Cambodia to the south and Vietnam to the east. The country has three international airports: Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport and Pakse International Airport. The national carrier Laos Airlines as well as Vietnam Airlines, Siem Reap Airways and Bangkok Airways serve the international airports.
Religion
67% of the Laos population is Theravada Buddhist, 1.5% are Christian, and 31.5% are other or unspecified. Buddhism has long been one of the most important social forces in Laos. Theravada Buddhism along with the common animism practiced among the mountain tribes, coexists peacefully with spirit worship.
Language
The official and dominant language is Lao, a tonal language similar to Thai. However, only slightly more than half of the population can speak Laos with the remainder speaking various ethnic minority languages. French is probably the dominant second language but there are an increasing number of English speakers throughout the country.
VIENTIANE Visitors to Vientiane are often surprised that such a small, relaxed and friendly city could serve as the capital of a nation. Vientiane seems to blend seamlessly with its countryside and it is easy to get lost in the charms of this evolving backwater. The city is certainly not as striking as Luang Prabang, but spending a few days touring its unusual sights and sampling it´s excellent food at sunset by the river will soon make you feel at home.
