ASSEMBLAGE Looking at what makes and defines a shoe, this project aims to abstract the everyday item. Through a series of studies and simple model-making, the shoe was abstracted by its qualities and general purpose. The end result was a lamp that sought to juxtapose the lightness and heaviness a tennis shoe has. The base of the lamp is representative of the different terrains one might run on. The lamp represents and opposes the heavy base by providing physical light as well as a clean, smooth surface from which the light projects. This was a precedent to the Project no. 03 Sohl.

BURLON This project was completed during a semester of studying abroad in Rome with the University of Arkansas Rome Center Program. The goal of this project was to create a fashion design outlet in the Acquario Romano. The Acquario Romano was designed and built in the late 19th C. and was originally purposed to be an aquarium for the City of Rome. Since then it has functioned as an event space, a circus space, and now houses the Department of Architecture for Rome. The Italian Designer chosen for this space was Marcelo Burlon, a designer based of Milan. Creating his very own symbol and ideology, Burlon designs in a way that celebrates diversity. Often resembling the scene and atmospheres of 1990s club culture, Burlon works in a way that responds to the urban and couture environment.

DR. OSSIAN SWEET Completed in an advanced Service Learning studio, this project worked with the City of Detroit to re-examine two American Four-Square homes through adaptive reuse and turn them into an interpretive center and functioning duplexes. The two homes sit directly across from the Michigan Historic Landmarked Dr. Ossian Sweet House. The exterior of the duplex will be restored with the ground floor functioning as an interpretive center to educate the public about the evolution of housing in Detroit neighborhoods and the specific story pertaining to Dr. Ossian Sweet’s attempt at racial integration in the neighborhood. The second floor will be occupied by a visiting scholar/historian/ educator and opened to the public on a limited basis. The adjacent duplex at 2918 Garland Street was proposed to be restored as a functional and operating complex that will be occupied by visiting scholars/historians/educators and opened to the public on a limited basis. The goal of this project was to create a dialogue with Detroit that references a history of over-crowding and the housing challenges of Detroit’s lower income groups.

SOHL Following up on 01 ASSEMBLAGE, this project was based in an existing building, a repurposed Cambell’s Soup Factory. The scope of this project was to create a headquarters for a shoe company that was based in Fayetteville, AR. The design of the space was based off the type of shoe the company produced: a postindustrial, professional active-wear shoe. The space is meant to follow this atmosphere, and create a unique environment that represented the company’s ideals. This project was nominated for the GenslerBrinkmann Scholarship in 2018, and was named an Honorable Mention. The project can be found here: https://youtu.be/d1xwEwvOapM

GATHER DETROIT A speculative project working with the city of Detroit on the re-adaptive opportunities for an abandoned water treatment plant at 3500 Riopelle Street in Detroit, Michigan. This project developed an intensive mixed-use program that responds to adjacent functions of the greater Market District. These functions include but are not limited to health services, educational opportunities, food and retail growth, and large scale housing needs. The proposed program addressed the functions listed above and created an innovative solution that appropriately addressed the needs and social climate of the Detroit area. This project was completed on a team of three people, and was completed during the Spring of 2019.

FAY WEBSITE Part of a professional practice course, the goal was to create a website that would represent the Fay Jones School of Architecture+Design Interior Design Program. This was a class project and jobs were delegated throughout the class. As the Design Coordinator for the new website, the goal was to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing website that matched the existing aesthetic of the school.

IL MAGAZZINO The goal of this project was to create a bookstore cafe in the old Mattatoio, or Slaughterhouse of Rome, Italy. The space is a large 15,000 sqft where the goal was to create a mixed use program that was sponsored by an Italian brand or company. For this project, the eyeglasss company, Luxottica was chosen to be the sponsor. What is Luxottica’s goal? It is to create and understand the world from a notion of universal beauty, where the beauty comes to life at the intersection of personal wellbeing, respect for the environment, ethics, and the transparency of relations. What is the guiding force in this project? To highlight the intersection of well-being, the environment and community relationships. This highlight is accomplished by the use of a singular datum line, for instance, yourself. It is then intersected, providing a moment of stasis and pause, to then restart and continue forward.
