Aristotle once equated the essence of life to serving others and doing good. While the philosophy seems like a fulfilling endeavor, it's not quite practical given that we lead super busy lives. With our already jam-packed schedules, it's impossible to think of giving away your time and energy for free without a financial reward. However, volunteering is beneficial for several reasons, and the best part about it is that it doesn't have to take up much of your time and effort. The advantages of volunteering not only benefit the community, or person receiving the assistance, it also benefits the individual or the organization offering the help. Such benefits can probably explain why there has been a steady rise in popularity in volunteering in the past few years. Research shows that more than 25% of adults in the United States volunteered from 2008 to 2017, with women taking the lead at a staggering 27.8% against 21.8% of men. So why is there a spike in volunteering? Well, it seems as though more and more people are starting to realize the immense benefits one can derive from volunteering. People are beginning to see how helping each other benefits all parties involved, and more businesses are joining the helping bandwagon.

BENEFITS BUSINESSES DERIVE FROM VOLUNTEERING Connecting With the Community
A huge benefit that volunteering has is its impact on the community. It allows organizations to connect to the community to improve it. Even helping out with small tasks can make a significant difference to the lives of those in need, and it's a two-way street. Setting aside time to help others helps employees network and make new contacts and friends by sharing activities. Volunteering allows employees from different companies in the Hunterdon County Chamber to meet for a common goal and form connections. These connections made during the volunteering process make for an incredible opportunity to expand business ties outside the organization.
Volunteering Has Immense Health Benefit
Scientists coined a term for the physical effect doing good deeds has on the human body. The term is known as Helper's High. Volunteering promotes good physical and mental health by counteracting the effects of anger, stress, and anxiety while also combating depression by maintaining a regular contract with others. It also increases self-confidence and provides employees with a sense of purpose, thus increasing employee empowerment.
Team Bonding
Teaming employees up outside of the work environment to participate in a worthwhile activity fosters a sense of teamwork. Pulling together to partake in a common goal, especially a community project or charity, helps employees build bonds that last long, thus making for a renewed sense of commitment to the job and one another.
Business Success
According to research, organizations that integrate social impact into their daily processes can increase sales by about 20% and productivity by 13%. Such organizations also drastically reduce employee turnover while increasing the company's share price by up to 6%.
Enhanced Skills
Volunteering lets employees use their already learned skills to better the community. They can also use the opportunity to acquire a valuable skill that can come in handy in the work environment. Employers don't require financial investment to offer opportunities for employees to develop or enhance their skills.
LOOKING BACK WITH GRATITUDE AND FORWARD WITH OPTIMISM | 4
Increased Brand Awareness
Organizations that go out of their way to help the community by working in new environments usually earn a positive reputation for their good deeds. Nowadays, people want to associate themselves with brands that are working to create change in society. Therefore, volunteering in new or familiar environments helps establish relationships with customers and helps build brand awareness and loyalty. With the benefits of volunteering being evident, we hope that more enterprises become more involved in helping. The more value we add to others, the better our communities here in Hunterdon County and our world become. So why not start today?

In addition to the more traditional therapies, treatment often includes aspects of Adventure Based Counseling, Ecotherapy, Pet Therapy, and Play Therapy.

INTRODUCTION Meet New Chamber Team Member Mirelle White I am Mirelle White, the newest member of the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce team. I have been brought on board to support the on-going membership campaign and to assist in business development. I have experience in membership-based organizations having worked for IEEE (the largest technical membership association) for 20+ years. Using my extensive skills, my primary focus is on the expansion of membership. Further, I will support the various projects, programs, and services the Chamber offers its members and community at large. Hunterdon County has been my home for many years. I graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School and earned my bachelor’s degree from Stockton University. I also have a mini-MBA: Business Essentials from the Rutgers School of Business. In addition, my first position out of university was as a probation officer working out of the Old Court House and the Justice building handling domestic violence complaints throughout the county and training police officers on the procedures for the Superior Court. I am a Life-Member Girl Scout, love to travel, and enjoy all things historical (American Civil War and England’s Norman Conquest in 1066 are some of my favorites). I look forward to meeting you and working together to continue to grow the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce.

Triathlon: Is this your next goal?
By: Megan Sellers – B.S. in Exercise Science, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Level 1 & 2 FMS, USMS Swim Coach, Mat and Reformer 1 & 2 PHI Pilates, NESTA Nutrition Coach
When most people think of a triathlon, they think of the Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run). However, this is the marathon of triathlons and there are shorter distance triathlon races for getting started. The shortest is the sprint distance and it typically consists of about a 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. Training for a triathlon has many benefits but one of the biggest is the amazing effects of cross training. By training for 3 sports concurrently, your body has just the right mix of work vs. recovery, weight bearing vs. non weight bearing and upper vs. lower body work. Some other benefits include an overall increase in cardiovascular and muscular health, weight management, meeting new people, consistency in workouts and the great feeling of success from completing a new challenge. Start by picking a race that is 15+ weeks out. Would you rather have a flat course or a hilly one? Do you prefer a swim in the lake or ocean? Would you rather race locally or travel and have a fun weekend away? Once you find the race that is right for you, sign up for it. Races typically fill up early and putting your money down will help hold you accountable to your workouts. If your goal is just to finish the race, training each sport twice per week is a good start with 1 day off to rest. Add a third day if needed especially in your weakest sport. Plan to train up to a little more distance in each sport than you will be racing and slowly work your way up to the distance. It’s a great idea to find a training plan to follow or hire a coach. Find a stroke instructor to help with technique in the swim**. Contact your local bike shop to find out about group rides. Look for local triathlon teams to join for group workouts, guidance and camaraderie. Have fun with the journey, you will be so glad you pushed yourself to try something new! **Sessions available at Hunterdon Health and Wellness in Clinton, NJ.
