Practical advice is given when the body is damaged with easy to perform self treatments to relieve the worst of the pain when possible in a way that explains the complex workings of the body in easy to understand language Not only may the information be used in prevention before damage occurs but also the same details may help prevent irritation on existing symptoms The complicated workings of the body’s muscles are explained in a style designed to make learning interesting and easy to comprehend Where possible any medical terminology is translated into ‘everyday’ wording for easier understanding

For the purposes of this book the word ‘damage’ is referring to injury location, area of disc deterioration as to herniated, prolapsed, burst, compressed etc, nerve pain, muscle spasms, strain, sprain, torn, pain site

Preface In 1970 I was hit by a car while on a small motorbike and seconds before the car smashed into me I called out, please don’t let me die, I haven’t even had a child yet and I want one before I die and I haven’t had time to achieve anything worthwhile with my life yet Instead of being killed I received serious injuries of several discs herniated in the neck, shoulders and lower back, plus one disc prolapsed I was given no help by the medical profession who said they could find nothing wrong when x-rays showed no broken bones, so I had only my own resources to rely on and did so by making my own self help pain prevention list I learnt by myself as I went through day and night of severe never ending agonising pain 1999 I had another serious injury falling onto a footpath while on holidays, leaving me with eight herniated discs again in the neck, shoulders and low back and the prolapsed disc from 1970 showed up on the MRI scans The medical profession said they could not help me as they had tried all that the medical world had to offer and it didn’t ease my pain I took the information I had gained and used on others during my career to help myself this time as I had the experience of Remedial Massage Injury Treatments I had given during my career and was able to apply treatment to myself using massage machines at the same time as using my pain prevention list yet again Christmas 2007 I fell on a wet tiled floor and again herniated five discs all in the low back (lumbar’s and Sacrum) and all are pushing against my sciatica nerve My surgeon suggested I go for as long as I can without surgery as the operation I need has a 70% failure rate, once again the Doctors are unable to help me January 2008 the new doctor I went to gave me anti-inflammatory, panadol osteo and morphine to help ease the pain of my latest injuries Before very long I was off the anti-inflammatory tablets and then after several months of walking and specific stretching in a heated pool four days a week I was able to cease taking morphine so that I am only on panadol osteo for my arthritis Due to the 1999 injuries I lost my Business, my marriage, my home, my vehicles and my money whilst also suffering Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome When the time of my second injury occurred I was being severely mentally and emotionally abused by my husband who threateningly stood over me and demanded I had to “******* get back out to work” the day after my fall

At the time my injuries where such that I was unable to walk five minutes or carry small items in my hand without it falling from my grip to the floor I had eighteen new herniated discs at the time and he didn’t care about the pain I was enduring, so long as I produced money for him from my business was all that mattered His cruelty towards me when I was no longer able to earn money became such that I was unable to tolerate being married to him

When I told him the marriage was over he then forced me out of the house with only a suitcase of clothes to live in the streets

As I was unable to walk long distances or carry heavy items due to my injuries my husband anticipated that I would let him have the majority of the marriage settlement being out on the streets with no money, no car, no accommodation and unable to care for myself from injuries I was suffering

Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome added to my helplessness with being unable to mentally make rational decisions concerning my personal welfare After many months I was finally able to obtain $5,000 through my solicitors from the sale of the house my husband had money tied up in an account With this money I bought a Tarago Van so I could have somewhere to sleep and the freedom of a vehicle to transport me where ever I needed to go

The people who advertised the vehicle told me I was the only person to call during the two weeks it was for sale and then within half an hour of my purchasing the van their phone never stopped ringing with offers of double the price if they would sell it to them

As always God was there for me with the perfect vehicle to meet my needs so I could sleep in the back seat for the following ten months giving me a home with a small tent I bought for $10 to cook under, plus the protection to lock myself into the van each night terrified of being attacked God helped me have the courage to travel upwards from NSW to Queensland where the weather was warmer for the winter months Whilst driving to Bundaberg I stayed a few nights at a caravan park on the Gold Coast near Brisbane and the first night there someone stole my two plastic chairs leaving me without seating for outside my vehicle

The next day I knocked on doors asking if anyone had seen who had taken my chairs and a lady said to me she was an alcoholic and after sitting talking to her, she asked would I like to have dinner with her that night, I said yes When I arrived that night she had a basket loaded with items such as shampoo, conditioner, cloths, detergents, pegs, etc as a gift for me

During dinner she explained that she had used the last of her pension money to buy dinner and the gifts for me as she felt so sorry for me

I was totally overwhelmed to think that an alcoholic would use the last of their precious drinking money to provide for me when my husband had $400,000 accessible in the bank, $350,000 money from sale of house, a Landrover vehicle value $75,000, Caravan $60,000 entire household furniture $50,000 and forced me out of the house with only $300 to live on that he hadn’t been able to force me to hand over to him

God knew I had lost belief in human beings after the hell my husband put me through and this was his way of showing me that there really is decent people in this world who give their last dollar to help another in trouble and not all are money hungry and uncaring like my husband Not only was she kind, friendly and generous, she also let me see the truth of my circumstances, that I had went from being a successful women owning my own business, employing others, to living in the street accepting handouts from others who felt sorry for me due to my injuries At the time I did not know I needed any help as my solicitor had forced my husband to pay the $5,000, I now had a vehicle to live in that I believed was my home with all my needs met, having somewhere to sleep and cook

I was able to brave winter sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle living in a caravan park on the beach so that I was able to swim in the ocean two hours a day and also walk on land one to two hours a day While in the ocean I was able to twist and turn my body in a way I was unable to on land, allowing me to achieve movements I had been unable to do since my injury

Daily I lived on fresh fruits and vegetables from the local markets at an affordable price helping me with my walking to lose 15kgs by the time I left As the time of my marriage settlement drew near I became terrified that I would have to come face to face with my husband in court One night lying on the backseat of the van I was so frightened, sobbing, I called out to God to please help me and help me he did

When it came to court time he sent me a protector who met my need for encouragement and protection during the time of marriage settlement

Whilst back in Newcastle I was unable to stay at caravan parks as the holiday season had started and they were fully booked so at one stage I slept in my paid storage unit for safety and wandered the shops during the daytime to benefit from their air-conditioning

God sent me a young girl from Church to offer me accommodation during the time of the holiday season and we fast became friends

7

I had always been forced all my life to care for all others and never allowed to care for myself, I was forced to be strong and independent During the court battle God said to me ‘my weakness is my strength’ and tho I had no idea what it meant, I later realised that the obvious fear of my husband coupled with my extreme disabilities and living conditions ensured decent people helped me where they could I had thought that the fear of my husband weakening me so I was unable to properly fight for my rights and my physical weakness hampering me meant that I was a pathetic undeserving person lacking courage when I most needed strength to fight my battles

Instead I was forced to accept the help I needed from others and admit to my helplessness both mentally and physically, I could no longer live my life separate from the world of people How good God was to me, putting caring people into my life to help me

Not so man’s law, the court ruled, as I was no longer operating my business due to injuries I was not able to claim any contributions my business had made into the marriage, but at the same time my husband had to keep all his super money even though he had lost a third in the stock market crash and had topped it up with money from my business My husband told of possessions he took valuing a houseful of furniture worth $50,000 supposedly only worth $500, two vehicles worth $140,000 only worth $30,000 and so on

As I had cheque butts to prove I paid for the building of business premises behind the house and maintenance repairs he was unable to cheat me out of half the house money, although he tried very hard to do so With the pathetic amount of money I received I had no way of ever buying a home, furniture or a vehicle to replace all my husband had taken

God once again stepped in where man and the courts had failed me, finding me the perfect home suited to my needs in a secure village with boom gates for protection and friendly people who look out for each other, at an unheard of ridiculously low price I was able to afford, plus a near new vehicle again suited to my needs, with a home filled with new and antique furniture all at sale prices

Everything I lost to my husband through the courts, God replaced with far better possessions more suited to me as an individual With my new doctor in 2008 I was immediately sent for treatment with a psychologist and the Dr is monitoring each health complaint I am suffering

Having had no help for my Post Traumatic Stress, my losses of marriage, Business and possessions plus two serious injuries within eight years of each other I understandably had Major Depression added to my health woes Now that I have at last experienced much needed mental care I believe it is a must after injury to promote recovery from all the losses experienced Using my Injury treatment massage knowledge and skills combined with my pain prevention list I am able to monitor my progress to live a near normal lifestyle Some of the health issues I suffered from after my injuries was severe diarrhoea, severe constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome, reflux – oesophagus, failing eyesight, loss of hearing, sensitivity unable to accept touch, restless legs, breast pain, Vulvodynia, cancer, low immune system, knee damage and panic attacks, asthma, groin pains, nausea, poor libido, stress incontinence, hip and low back pain, entire left arm pain, right arm deterioration, ribs pain, tailbone pain, memory loss, low retention, fear, shoulder pains and neck pain, collarbone pain Whenever suffering with health problems or extreme pain I use my massage machine and work on myself using my techniques to control my pain symptoms Although I have a partially restricted lifestyle I no longer suffer severe 24 hour pain and I am able to join into certain physical activities If anyone can understand what it is like to go through pain from serious injuries and the repercussions with losses, surely it would be me

Introduction

At the beginning of 1990 when I was unable to find any employment I asked God to help and that I would let ‘his will be done’ God very quickly let it be known to me that he wanted me to massage and even though I had no experience in the industry I did as instructed At the time I was very poor and asked God how I could possibly afford the class fees and look after my two children on my own at the same time God said trust in him so I did and he cared for us with our every need met Starting my Remedial Massage training and career in 1990 my goal was only concerned with giving the best full body massage available It soon became evident to me that the people who came to me were only interested in having injury treatments on specific areas of the body This opened up a whole new world for me in my career Being a Perfectionist when I started my new goal of giving injury treatments I wanted to do my Best to ease people’s pain When I first started Massaging for injuries it quickly became evident to me that the percentage rate of successful outcomes was not of a high ratio, in fact it was very poor in my opinion I very quickly discovered that there was a problem with the teaching I had received in how much recovery if at all, I could expect to achieve with the style of massage I had been taught and so I went to every new specialised class claiming to have the new miracle cure and wasted more money with more knowledge of different ways to do the same thing I realised I had a problem as the knowledge I sought was not available in any massage classes and I realised I had to find a solution by solving it myself and I don’t give up easily - so I put my investigative mind to my problem During my search for an answer on how I could relieve pain for people I asked an important question of God My Question to God was WHY did people with the same injury, approximate same location and type of injury and although they may have differences of Age, gender, athletic compared to sedentary lifestyle etc. all that taken into consideration, were not having Consistent recovery as some heal quickly while others did not heal at all

10

God quickly put me to work finding the answer, giving me constant repetitive same injury types and a keen interest in studying muscle and nerve charts until I finally worked out the link between them Knowledge gained from intensive study of body Charts plus input from the people I gave massages to, at the same time as my observations of their bodily responses combined with their achieving consistent improvement or recovery rates when that knowledge was applied, confirmed for me I had valid muscle information that gave consistent positive results Since starting Remedial Massage Training in 1990 I had extensive Studies in other Modalities such as Tuina/Anyo at guang an men hospital China, Sports Medicine, sports Massage, Deep muscle, Tendon & Ligament Therapy, Kinesiology, Bowens, Trigger point therapy, Ortho-Bionomy and was Privy to knowledge from friends in the fields of Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Medical Practitioners, Gym Trainers etc., explaining their field of practice Once I applied the learnt knowledge God taught me I became so busy with work I was booked out six weeks in advance and had to put on fulltime staff and still could not keep up to all the work I specialised on people who required pain relief for injuries, mystery ailments, workers compensation, pre and post operative surgery and sports athletes So many Doctors, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists were referring their patients to me as I kept giving the same high quality results and at times healing people with mystery ailments they themselves were unable to help In my opinion I believe my discoveries not only help healing with Remedial Massage treatments, but can be utilised to help healing with other Modalities Finally I had learnt when all the differences had been taken into account what was the common denominating factor of all body types that accelerated and enhanced recovery no matter where the injury was located During this period of time, twice a week I conducted Massage Classes during Semesters at the Newcastle University for several years Because I am no longer able to operate my Injury treatment Remedial Massage Business I am writing this book so my skills will not be totally lost to the world being too valuable to lose as they helped so many people with injuries and health issues during my career as also myself The following information derived from the expertise I gained over the years during my Remedial Massage Career is in my opinion and experience shown to have merit when I applied that knowledge to those seeking relief from pain and health issues

Muscle movement

One

To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example, to walk, the muscles of the leg work to lift the leg in an upwards direction and then moves the leg into a forwards position at the same time using muscles to place the foot at an angle ready to step the full weight of the body onto Once the foot is again planted onto the ground the entire leg and foot muscles prepare for and accepts the body’s weight moving forwards onto the entire structure of leg, knee, ankle and foot The muscles of the foot, ankle, knee and leg balances the body from falling while the other leg then moves forward past the now stationary leg At the same time the hips are held at varying angles during leg movements to hold the body in an upright position This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body Any movement in the body requires companion muscles being involved to perform the task To pick up a cup of coffee the arm muscles allow the arm to reach out to the cup and then to bring the cup upwards to the mouth to then hold it in position at the mouth for as long as is required Fingers provide grip to hold onto the cup at all times Wrist and hand together act as a hinge to twist and turn in whichever direction needed to position the cup at whatever angle is required for picking up and when drinking from the cup If the arm is held in front of the body holding the cup, it may be felt in the shoulder blade (scapula) muscles in the back of the body Muscles have many overlapping groups of muscles that allows movement of the body by each group supporting one another to achieve the goal Not only do the muscle groups overlap one another but they also support one another from different angles and directions The body is an amazing engineering phenomenon with each individual group of muscles designed to give full support to one another in a team effort to achieve the most basic task to complicated projects

Evon

Š 2011

12

At the same time the reverse reactions of the muscle groups also happens when damage occurs to muscles, each individual section eventually affecting the team effort with weakening and pain Sometimes when injury first occurred to the body it is likely that the full intensity of the pain may not have been felt until two or three days later as Adrenaline may keep the body cushioned from the worst of the pain When doing activities while injured it is easy to overwork the body as the pain may be at a tolerable level at the time of activity but then the pain may be felt severely over the next few days In combination with each muscle group interacting with one another to achieve movement of the body the individual muscles movement and function needs to be taken into account to fully understand muscles

Evon

Š 2011

13

Muscle Attachments

Two

I look for understanding of pain and health issues from muscle interference anywhere in the body with the understanding that ONE muscle needs to be seen as THREE points of damage and pain, plus three points of pain and impairment to any connecting muscles At either end of each individual muscle the origin and insertion points attach the muscle to bone, muscle or tissue When the muscle is damaged, the reaction of the muscle is to tighten in such a way that it actually shortens the length of the muscle itself As the muscle shortens due to damage, it immediately pulls at both ends of the muscle, where the muscle originates from and inserts into the body (attachment points) Which means muscle damage instantly creates pain and impairment in THREE areas at once at the minimum There are many different Muscle types, sizes and shapes varying in length Muscles may spread from or to a small area, and to or from a large section where the origin or insertion points anchor the muscle to bone, other muscle or tissue Wider coverage of Muscle origin or insertion at attachment point would indicate greater amount of inflammation and pain to deal with Some Skeletal muscles originate or insert to or from 2 or more bones at one end and may have a narrow origin or insertion point at the other end Both origin and insertions of the muscle would have their own set of problems if damaged The muscle end originating or inserting from or to several bones will influence the performance of several surrounding attachments due to tight pulling muscle spreading impairment over multiple attachment points, as well as the damage site of the main section of the muscle ‘belly’ The smaller end of the muscle will be under tremendous pressure from the pulling power and action of the muscles other end having many groups of attachments against its small singular origin or insertion Fibres that make up the muscle stretch, they may shorten or lengthen, then go back to their original size in response to nerve irritation

Evon

Š 2011

14

When the muscle contracts (shortens) it may decrease over half of its original length When the muscle is damaged, the reaction of the muscle is to tighten in such a way that it actually shortens the length of the muscle itself and if left untreated, over time it may become hardened and remain in this shortened state Some muscles attachment points wrap around or over joints of the body The three points of pain in muscles when damaged as stated earlier are the muscle belly (the main muscle itself) and the two attachment points of origin and insertion The importance of where the muscles two attachment points are located, is essential to give proper attention to these sections for better recovery results The muscle belly needs to be given attention so the main muscle is able to relax enough to take the pressure off the two attachment points When the main muscle is pulling tight the two attachment points are being placed under excessive pressure with the muscle pulling against the body Therefore the two attachment points require attention at the same time as the ‘belly’ to relax the entire of the main muscle and release pressure from all three sections Giving attention to all three at once is one of the main reasons why I have had such success in recovery results The closeness of connecting muscle groups at times may also affect the operating function of surrounding groups of muscles to any that has sustained the original damage

Evon

Š 2011

Nerves and their effects on the muscles

Three

Because of the Nerve System spasm reactions, when damage occurs in the Body, I always follow the connection of MUSCLE and NERVE branches antagonism at Front, Back and Sides and up and down the body As many simple little things may irritate the nerve, it is wise to take a few minutes to read the ‘pain prevention’ list to learn how easily the nerve may be aggravated When certain daily activities may cause nerve irritation, knowledge on how to reduce or prevent the pain may enable some control over symptoms Those who are prepared to gain knowledge on how muscles may affect their health and body with the information in these pages may be encouraged to participate in their own health and recovery to lead a near to ‘normal’ lifestyle depending on the severity of their medical condition So many want the instant, magic pill to Stop pain NOW solution and don’t realise there are other ways that uses effort by themselves as well as the pain pill, that may give results allowing freedom to live a life rather than existing Popping pain pills is a quick fix that may work to ease the pain, but may require stronger doses to have the same effect over time, then risking worse problems with all the side effects to the rest of the body and mind Pills may not always ease the cause of the pain that may keep returning until whatever it is that’s causing the irritation in the first place is attended to Sometimes this may be a hard pill to swallow and it’s hard to hear, but if pain levels are to change, some physical effort may need to be put into it as well The ‘Pain Prevention’ list is simple everyday situations that may easily irritate the nerve and simple steps given to relieve pain and change lifestyle The Spinal Column is made up of Vertebrae (Bones) that have specific shaped processes as part of them to allow the Sciatica nerve free movement between these processes and the spinal column The Sciatica Nerve is located next to the spinal column with many branches leading off the main Sciatica Nerve into other areas of the lower body Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve

16

When Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knee, ankle, foot or hip Deterioration may begin in one muscle being irritated by the nerve and quickly starts affecting each overlapping group of muscles as pressure are placed on surrounding nerve routes producing irritation further from origin of damage Dependant on the angle of compression against the Sciatica Nerve, pain may be felt in the most unusual ways, such as red hot burning in the pad of the foot, or ants crawling over the skin, or a bolt of lightning down the back of the leg As the Main body of the Sciatica nerve has smaller branches scattering in different directions from it, pain coverage may be extreme when at its worst constantly changing the areas affected Pain may be felt behind the knee then a few hours later it may pain in the pad of the foot, or the leg is so irritated sitting still becomes impossible All these mystery aggravating pains in the lower body may be a result of Sciatica nerve pain Other Medical conditions may emerge from the same physical irritants Specialised Massaging of the lower body in combination with the ‘Pain Prevention’ list, may enhance recovery, but ongoing treatments may be necessary, if major injury is creating continuous nerve and muscle irritation A common cause of Sciatica Nerve pain is when Discs are damaged, the thick mass inside the Disc starts pushing against the Nerve compressing it on a continuous basis At times the nerve may be seriously damaged and no pain is felt by some people, but those who do feel the pain suffer severely The following is necessary information if some CONTROL is wanted over what is happening to ANY section of the body When pain is felt in the muscle due to the nerve sending pain signals when injury happens to the muscle, the immediate reaction of the muscle is to pull tight shortening in length and thus pulling tight on both attachments together Due to the main nerve being located throughout the entire vertebrae spine, when irritated, pain may be felt in the many branches situated in arms, legs, head etc. that attach to the main nerve As the nerve pain may travel far from the original damage area the muscles may react with tightening anywhere along the nerve route

Evon

Š 2011

17

For instance the original damage may happen to the neck disc but because of the nerve interference, pain may be felt along sections of the arm When the arm muscles react with tightening from nerve aggravation, treatment needs to be given to loosen the over tight muscles in the arm at the same time as the neck region Especially if the muscles of the arm have been tightened with pain for a long period of time Following the nerve route from the spine to other sections of the body is a necessity when damage occurs When the body is hurt, the Nerves send a signal throughout its many complex strands, to warn of danger by way of feeling pain, and then when the body feels pain; it automatically tightens the muscles along the pathway of the Nerve As the damage eases, the nerve stops signalling pain and the muscle relaxes and returns to normal But if the nerve does not stop signalling pain from the original pain source then the muscles of the arm along the nerve route continues to weaken Muscle shortening creates strain as shortening is an exertion on the muscle not a normal resting length The cycle needs to be stopped by relaxing the muscles from pulling tight, at original pain site and any muscles affected along nerve route With the spreading inflammation pain, the average person sometimes may not know where the worst pain is actually coming from Many health issues may also be a result from damage to spinal nerve felt along the nerve route branches intruding into sensitive areas Nerve pain has many reasons for occurring, apart from  Disc damage (all types)  Vertebrae Spurs  Vertebrae Deterioration  Spinal Fusion  Knee damage These impediments may create a situation where the nerve becomes affected

Evon

© 2011

18

Some of the simplest reasons for irritating Sciatica or low back pain, may be eased by being aware of what may aggravate the sciatica with reading the ‘Pain Prevention’ list When the Nerve sends pain to areas of the body, it may be described as if  Restless legs/irritated and can’t sit or lie still  crawling feeling under the skin  burning hot foot  Big toe Gout  Bladder or bowel dysfunction  Groin and/or belly button pain  Low back pain  Loss of sensation in areas of the body/ numbness  Legs become weak and collapse  Pins and needles  Sexual dysfunction  Sexual over/under interest  Reproduction difficulties  Vaginal/pubis irritation or itching  Front or back upper or lower leg pain

Muscle connections

Four

All too often Muscles are overworked on a daily basis and expected to do all that is asked without any thought about the overuse of muscles in certain situations The body is normally thought of as one solid mass, without registering that individual muscles are used to operate it Golf swing action holding the stick in the hand with the fingers holding it tight from falling, the hand balances it in the palm while the wrist is held at an angle and then the entire arm and shoulder holds everything in position in an extended posture in front of the body in a downward position then swinging the club up backwards with a follow through downward swinging action before hitting the ball with force There is no possibility of these movements in the body without the companion muscles being involved such as the fingers, the hand, the wrist, the forearm, the elbow, the upper arm and the shoulder to perform these simple tasks If one were to be interfered with surely the surrounding groups of muscles may also be under strain hampering their movement For example if the forearm were to be damaged the elbow, wrist and hand being a part of the forearm muscles attachments may be painful to be moved Muscles are dismissed from being the cause of pain as unimportant if small activities participated in and only thought to be relevant if having performed hard physical labour, sport or injuries Simple activities at home may be as extreme on the body as performing hard physical labour or athletic sports People who do not participate in continuous professional sports may also put pressure on their bodies when they only do occasional sports or do not attend to injuries received while active at sporting events When viewing the Muscular System covering the Skeleton, it may be seen that many layers of muscles make up each section of the body, one upon the other working in groups to perform necessary functions, interweaving over, under, beside, between, together and into each other, twisting and weaving in an intricate pattern to optimise movement With all this inter-connection of muscles it is obvious that if anything were to happen to one set of muscles, many others may also be affected If for example the body were to receive a blow impacting with considerable force, there would be more damage than only at the point of contact, as there

Evon

Š 2011

20

are several layers of muscle one on top of the other from the skin (surface) to the deeper internal skeleton (bones), dependent upon amount of force on contact any impact site may affect each layer of muscle from the surface group to the deeper internal group each suffering tightening, pain, inflammation and possible impairment At the very least there is upon EACH layer of muscles impacted by the contact; damage at contact site, then each end of every muscle at 2 or more attachment points, perhaps tearing muscle, tendons or ligaments with the force Just imagine if impact force affected several layers deep of muscle groups and those groups were from different directions for example the upper arm has muscle groups across from the upper chest area, the shoulders and the neck, all meeting in layers at the upper arm Attachments from other areas of the body meeting at impact site when hurt then affect the entire of the muscle and other attachment at distant body area It is necessary to take into consideration the domino effect of all these surrounding areas of damage when making an assessment of overall body systems and functions affected by impact There are many repercussions to the muscles tightening and all may be interrelated with the Nervous System, the Skeletal Bones, the Blood circulatory system and the digestive/elimination system

Other Systems of the body

Five

Tight muscles affects upon the blood system slowing circulation may lead to other health problems Muscles contract (shorten) in response to nerve aggravation and when damaged may eventually be unable to return to their original length when relaxed, forming a hard lumpy mass that may slow or obstruct essential blood supply Calf muscles are an example of overworked muscles forming a large mass that may restrict essential blood flow The restricted blood flow may then further accelerate the collapse of other bodily functions and systems dependent on maintenance via the blood supply Strokes/headaches Linked to blood circulation not having proper flow in legs, shoulders, neck and head may be from tightening muscles causing those areas to squeeze delicate blood vessels obstructing flow? The shoulders, neck and head may be a result from stress or work related specific overuse of these areas An example of blood flow depletion affecting the body is when Osteoarthritis may occur at any time after an injury or excessive wear and tear to a joint interfering with necessary blood flow to joints How would you define arthritis? Arthritis is a general term for diseases or other abnormal processes occurring in the joints. An estimated 40 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis Our joints and ligaments, like our muscles, wear with use and need to be constantly repaired- a process that normally occurs during sleep. Repair of any body part requires free access to oxygen and other nutrients. When circulation of the blood becomes inadequate, ligaments weaken, joint fluids decrease, and cartilage wears away What is the most common form of arthritis? Osteoarthritis is the most common type, and in some degree is almost universally present in our older populations. It can also occur at any time after an injury or excessive wear and tear to a joint, as often happens in football. (Arthritis resulting from injuries is known as traumatic arthritis) Osteoarthritis usually occurs when a joint’s blood supply becomes inadequate for its needed function. Just as a heart will weaken and ultimately fail when the coronary arteries clog up with plaque, so joints begin to break down when the

Evon

Š 2011

22

veins supplying them become narrowed or obstructed. For this reason most osteoarthritis responds to measures that improve circulation, such as lowering the amount of fat in the bloodstream, regular exercise and hydrotherapy (water treatments). Osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints, such as the spine, knees and hips, is commonly aggravated by caloric overload (obesity). Just as a bridge has a load limit, so do the joints. The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are pain and stiffness, which tend to decrease as the joint is warmed up with activity.’ Poor circulation in the legs and lower body of diabetics may result from muscles being too tight from damaged lower back and extended sitting Obstruction to blood flow in the legs may be from either too much over exercise tightening the calf muscles (Gastrocnemius) or from lack of exercise sitting in front of T.V. or computer for extended periods of time The combination of Muscle and Nerve interference with the blood and Lymphatic circulatory system may affect the entire body each interfering one with the other as the MAJOR Systems of Blood and Lymphatic circulation spread throughout the entire body and if one should be interfered with by muscle tightening it would be supposed that both may also be affected A common occurrence due to nerve irritation and muscular contractions from injury is interference to the bowel and bladder systems and at the same time probable weakening of the immune and lymphatic system which normally guards against cancer and diseases Muscle may tighten from extreme exercise, prolonged overuse, sudden impact, disc/vertebrae damage, spinal misalignment, knee deterioration All of the major internal systems in the pelvic region may be affected with the myriad of nerves and muscle housed there being continually antagonised Muscle spasms in the stomach/intestinal area may be generated from referred nerve pain in the back, disrupting the stomach/intestinal system from performing its normal digestive and elimination processes Muscles are taken so much for granted no recognition is given for how much interference with the entire body may occur when muscles are damaged If a check were made it may show that many who suffer disc or sciatica damage also had disruptions to their bladder or bowel functions at the same time Not only does interference happen to the bodies systems soon after injury but it may also be creating havoc years after the injury occurred Obviously we need muscles to give movement to our skeleton or we would be unable to move our bodies Evon Š 2011

We need muscles to move our eyes to see with, to talk and to smell the roses? Muscles are used to chew food and then to help the body to process it to the stage of needing to discharge it and that’s when some of those not so rosy smells may occur There are many reactions to the muscles tightening and all may be inter-related with the Nervous system, the Spinal column, the Blood circulatory System producing complications in the individual bodily functions as also the body in its entirety The systems of the body are too numerous to mention here but some are the stomach system, elimination system, kidney system, liver system, hormonal system, fertility system, lung system, heart and all are dependent on blood supply circulation working at optimum levels As the nerves have many branches forking out in different directions from the one location, it may result in pain being felt in many more areas of the body than the original hurt is located This state of wide spread pain in areas other than the hurt site or ill health understandably may cause confusion and only when ALL the factors relating to the workings of individual and companion relationships of bodily functions, muscles and nerves are taken into account, might the enormity of the bodies complicated networking systems be understood Deteriorating health happening to other areas of the body as from the time of serious damage occurring to areas of the spinal column, when reviewed may show to be associated with various other ailments starting to occur at that same time with each of these conditions varying in duration of time, disappearing and reappearing irregularly, or opposites as to constipation then changing to diarrhoea symptoms The Blood circulatory System, Nerves and Lymphatics travel throughout the entire length of the body from the top of the head to the toes of the foot and to the fingertips of the hands all three of them closely linked together The Three Major systems of the body carry our blood supply, among other activities to keep the heart functioning, the nerves warn of danger by signalling pain in the body and the Lymphatics dispose of waste products Imagine what may happen if something were to interfere dramatically with any of these systems, stopping them from carrying out their normal functions? Even minor interference over long periods of time has the potential to do harm to a systems function

The major functioning systems are in every section of the body, only one other thing occupies the same space in all areas, to be able to affect all three of them individually or at the same time and that’s the Muscles, which occupies EVERY area of the body Muscles may interfere with the major systems of the body and one example is: Muscle on Blood supply Years of jogging, especially over sand dunes or up hills, the leg muscles become extremely hardened and tight, this may slow vital blood flow from the furthest region of the body, mix in hardening muscles in areas of the chest and upper back through weight lifting or continual stress, add an out of the ordinary night at a dinner/party, then in the morning go jogging as usual, the heart needs all the blood it can pump to take on the work of jogging, then add unusual rich food and drinks still in the body from the night before and a sluggish lymphatic and blood circulatory system may not be able to pump everything through quick enough because of muscle interference throughout the body, especially the hardened leg muscles from jogging and nerve pain ignored as so many believe ‘no pain no gain’ The important Blood circulatory system unable to perform at peak condition due to extremely tight, overworked muscles in the legs, chest and back interfering with them by compression of these delicate vessels; even slowing the movement of blood in so many vital areas at once, might be a perfect formula for heart attack and it is said “it was so unexpected and nobody understands why he died when he was always jogging, he was so fit and healthy” Lymphatics: There is the possibility that interference with the Lymphatics functioning process of waste disposal may lead into an inability to combat cancerous growths Footballer all his young life used his shoulder/chest area at all games to ‘ram’ other players out of the way While only a young man he developed lymphoma cancer in the shoulder/chest area he had continually ‘charged’ other players with when playing football There are many repercussions to the muscles tightening and all are inter-related with the Nervous system, the Skeletal Bones, The Blood circulatory System and the digestive/elimination system Each of the systems may interfere with one another to produce complications in the individual bodily functions as also the body in its entirety as the entire network of the Nervous system and Blood circulatory system are interweaved throughout the musculature and skeletal framework of the body

As an example, when the muscles spasm, due to nerve pain areas in close proximity to the intestines, the system is unable to perform its normal digestive and elimination processes efficiently, interfering with the body’s natural functions, causing many irritable bowel syndromes, stomach tenderness, constipation, diarrhoea and nausea Women’s menstrual cycle pain and fertility may be influenced by nerve and muscle pain combination from injuries to the lower body The three systems all being encased in a delicate structure and therefore easily damaged may be unable to withstand prolonged or sudden impact with extreme tightening by the muscles surrounding them when muscle is damaged This combination of Muscle interaction affects the entire body and all the other systems each intermixing together affecting one another to produce:  Poor blood circulation or blockage  Poor lymphatic circulation or blockage  Poor oxygen supply  Diminished Mental alertness and stability  Under or overactive bowel or bladder functions When one area is under duress it may affect some of the other bodily functions Treatments being given to bodily damage need to take into account the other systems that may be affected and those needs being met at the same time Too many long term chronic pain victims are dismissed as too hard basket when deterioration over multiple areas of the body is not recognised as linked People are unable to associate other deteriorating health problems happening to their body as from the time of their injury occurring as the two do not seem related to each other When the Low Back area is damaged, it has long been recognised that not only may the low back be affected with pain, but the sciatica nerve located in the low back may also affect the entire leg and/or knee through to the foot In my opinion just as important are all of the major internal systems in the pelvic region also being affected with the myriad of nerves and muscle housed there continually antagonising other systems

Vertebrae spinal or disc damage

Six

Damage to: feet, knee and Hip may creating a twisting effect to sections of the spinal vertebrae Misaligning may then occur to the skeletal bones, which may bring about an imbalance putting the body off centre to its natural skeletal alignment Pain from the nerves impingement by vertebrae or disc damage may also create muscle damage from continuous tightening beyond normal levels of muscles stretch limitations Spinal column curvature may create havoc with the muscular and nervous systems interfering with the organs functioning contained within the body When any of the individual vertebras or discs is damaged they tighten any muscles in close proximity, which in turn, may then create a chain reaction in other connecting muscles As all the major large branches of the nerves system all intermix with the spinal column, the chain reaction, when any of these major large nerve branches are affected is tremendous All the smaller branches of nerves attaching to the larger branches affected, running throughout other areas of the body, may then be set into reaction mode, each one setting off another area This may have a domino effect, of muscle spasms throughout this same entire pathway, where muscles are also interweaving with one another Vertebrae or disc damage may produce pain in many areas of the body distant to the injury site as both muscle and nerves branch out from disc and vertebrae in various directions interweaving together Dependent upon injury site along spinal column will determine extent of potential internal interference upon other systems due to the nerve and muscle combination When any of the individual vertebrae are damaged both the blood and lymphatic supply may be affected as the majority of the blood and lymphatic circulation systems both originates and ends from stem cells located inside the bone marrow

This potent combination, when serious injury occurs to the spinal column creates enormous havoc in every imaginable way in a person’s life This may create pain in the affected areas with the muscles being pushed past their limitations while pulling tight against their attachment points The resulting problems from this imbalance of the lower body may create some of the following conditions: Corns due to the foot constantly rolling over pushing all the weight of the body hard against shoes on a small section of the foot or toes Ankle injuries may happen due to the foot already being at an irregular angle, creating an imbalance effect on the body and being unable to recover balance easily in unstable conditions, the foot further rolls over tearing ligaments already stretched beyond their limitations in the foot, the ankle area and the front and back of the lower leg resulting in swelling and bruising of the ankle and surrounding areas Weak Ankles that keep spraining, straining, tearing, etc. may be unnecessary when given the proper treatment needed of taking the entire leg into account by massaging and stretching all front and back upper and lower leg muscles I have found that the majority of times if the body has an injury on a particular side of the upper or lower area of the body then it are likely deterioration may occur elsewhere on the same side of the body with the original injury tightening and weakening muscles elsewhere It also often occurs when one has sciatica or knee damage creating severe pain on one side of the body; it may begin affecting the opposite side of the body due to favouring the pain side, limping and bringing extra weight down on the ‘good’ side, eventually causing damage to the ‘good’ side of the body Limping creates its own set of problems with the pounding pressure felt in all the muscles of the leg as the full weight of the upper body pounds down onto one leg tightening all the muscles supporting it, damaging the knee and surrounding support system, as well as weakening the ankle and foot areas This may also lead to further complications of weight bearing joints being compromised through possible skeletal misalignment placing uneven weight distribution onto the joints wearing away its protective cartilage ‘padding’ and ligaments, with restricted blood flow being unable to repair or protect the joints in its role of lubricating fluid and tissue repair The hips may have a tilted angle due to knee; ankle or foot problems which may place stress on the spinal columns vertebrae

Evon

28

The front upper leg (Quadriceps) and the back upper leg (Hamstrings) muscles attaching to the hip area may be badly affected by the hips tilted angle as one set of muscles are over stretched beyond their limits while the opposing set of muscles become loose and weak This also compromises the back of the hip area at the Buttocks (Gluteus muscles) attachments, at the tailbone and/or sacroiliac joint damage, the circumference (crest) of the hip as well as the pelvic region muscles attachments at the pubis areas and all other bodily systems and parts contained in front of the hips When the hip is placed out of normal skeletal alignment it may interfere with muscles, causing them to pull painfully tight or be weak and loose in the front or back of the hip, affecting the normal operation of the bodily functions, as well as nerves adverse reactions to being aggravated in their new restrictive space Vertebrae spinal misalignment may affect many areas of the body with nerves and muscles being adversely affected due to the bones changed positioning putting pressure on muscles and nerves This off balance effect may lead to serious injuries as one may fall, trip, be dizzy, bump into furniture, have difficulty judging distance Pain from the nerves impingement and vertebrae misalignment may create muscle damage from continuous tightening beyond normal levels of muscles limitations Neck vertebrae affecting nerves may send pain not only to the arms but also into the throat and face with the interrelating muscles that surround the nerve route tightening Tight jaws creating muscle tightness and nerve interference may create pain as tooth ache, ear ache, Jaw Joint Pain or ‘dropsy’ Migraines, headaches or Sinus may be caused due to tight muscles and nerve interference in the (cervical) neck vertebrae This constant uninterrupted pain and illness interfering with the body means interrupted sleep patterns disturbing the brains ability to react and function normally on the physical level After injury, Stress and depression affecting the brains ability to function to its full mental level then becomes a problem as the level of losses in the person’s life escalates, if the trauma is severe enough to disrupt normal living standards of career, finances, housing, marriage, relationships, hobbies, sports, sex, all contributing to feelings of hopelessness

The Mental/Emotional reaction to all the damage occurring in so many widespread areas of the person’s internal body causes even more problems as many are told they are imagining other new health issues When the person is Stressed/Depressed, their muscles may tighten even more than is already happening During this further deterioration the person eventually becomes more depressed being unable to ignore the widespread pain and other disabilities created from their injuries The entire Physical Body is a complicated functioning process but when simplified and looked at not only as single components, but also as a whole interacting one with the other, it may be easier to see how everything may interfere one with the other, or may enhance performance by working smoothly together Understanding how lifestyle may cause unnecessary pain, creates alternative options with changing behaviour patterns that may be aggravating the body

Lifestyle changes

Seven

Damage to the body causes many body pains or ailments and some people may be able to develop strong muscles in surrounding muscle groups to take over from the area affected, allowing them to live a near normal lifestyle many years later forgetting the original damage occurred, while others may never have pain relief I believe that this may be in part attributed to the type of lifestyle the person is living as to whether or not they continue to maintain a degree of movement as well as several other factors including the severity of nerve damage and the mental and emotion effects this has had on the persons overall wellbeing Some people sit in front of the T.V. or stay in bed most of the day moving minimally because of being in too much pain to move, but as with all muscle reaction, maintaining activity allows ease of movement and pain relief A good analogy is that after doing a gym or other sporting activity for the first time muscles may pain for a few days afterwards until used to the particular sport, so may the amount of pain and restricted movement from injury change if activity built up slowly and maintained on a regular basis Then again some people try to return to a normal lifestyle being super person as though they may work through the pain by ignoring it, further aggravating the damage without allowing the body time to rest and heal from inflammation etc. Rest, gentle increasing movement with massage and stretching to start the healing of increased blood circulation; loosens and lengthens the muscle by relaxing them followed with specific joint mobilisation if needed If exercise is introduced too early when the muscle is already tight due to pain from damage, then this may create further aggravation on the damaged site by the muscle tightening even more, then pulling harder on the area causing even more pain, further discouraging the patients participation Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program

When the word exercise is mentioned, most think of hard boring repetitive work with someone shouting at them and is too hard with injuries to do If a personal trainer at a Gym environment is enjoyed for the motivational support given, it is an ideal situation to start recovery However if the gym atmosphere is off-putting it would be best to start with activities enjoyed that motivates Recovery exercise for injuries does not have to be hard and boring There are many fun activities that might be participated in while injured that may promote recovery at the same time When everything attempted creates pain and even when only resting pain from your injuries gives no relief 24 hours a day Something enjoyable is needed to distract the mind off the worst of the pain to uplift mood from debilitating depression Sitting in front of the T.V. day and night without much movement may worsen the condition, the body needs to move or it may stiffen and become harder with each year to move, worsening pain levels and deteriorating the body further When doing nothing or the smallest movement results in pain, it seems sensible at least to try participating in enjoyable activities and have as much of a life as possible So let’s talk about fun things to distract the body and mind from all the pain and at the same time promoting recovery with exercise and movement of the body Music is a promoter of pleasure when listening to programs enjoyed and even sitting in a chair or laying in bed arms may be waved about, nodding the head or tapping feet in time to the music When standing shuffle to a dance rhythm until able to move more freely to music, then when feeling more confident, join dance lessons meeting new people at the same time as making new friends If not keen on dancing with other people, there is many great dance DVD’s on sale that teach the latest styles, but be careful at the start as muscles are not used to the intense movement and when having fun it is easy to overdo it There are many different Stretch, Pilates, yoga and exercise DVD’s available to choose from to give an overall body workout and relieve boredom T.V. may still be watched while getting healthy by using a walking machine, exercise bike or other forms of mechanical exercise equipment to keep the body

moving at the same time, plus the safety of a controlled environment is an advantage Using a massage machine while watching T.V. a massage mat to lie on, a seat style or a hand machine are all worthwhile productive ways towards recovery Go snorkelling and check out the fish in a calm Ocean as salt water may give buoyancy while swimming and if needed wear a safety float belt at waist so back does NOT droop as it may send pain through the body Walking along beach up to mid calves in water may strengthen low back muscles while you enjoy the outdoors, fresh air and sunshine Fishing, canoeing, sailing, camping, BBQ’s in different locations outdoors Whale, Dolphin or bird watching, sunrise or sunset from outdoors In cooler weather take holidays to hot water (mineral springs) pools and while standing in water stretch body with different movements as directed by physiotherapist to release stiffness and talk to other people making new friends Find an upbeat aqua class to attend as buoyancy of water allows movement with less strain on the body than an aerobics class would Go prospecting looking along the ground for gems gives a fun purpose to walking Take guided tours with council rangers on night-time nocturnal animal spotting or daytime historical sites etc. go sightseeing around the country Join a bushwalking, bike riding, photography or painting club going outdoors Golf is another activity that gives a purpose to walking in the outdoors, with a motorised push cart, NOT a motorised sit on buggy Do a TAFE or WEA class, or University learning useful or fun skills Join a dart, craft, painting, patchwork group, snooker, ten pin/lawn bowls Spring clean house, garden and shed, vehicle or garage of unnecessary clutter taking days, weeks or longer if necessary, there is no rush Window shop at shopping centres, sporting stores, car yards, boat yards or tourist/travel information centres when too wet to walk outdoors Changing activities may prevent boredom, but importantly activates more muscle usage to give a more thorough body workout Walking in shopping centre, then sitting watching people go by is interesting

Collecting or making items to give to charities for Christmas presents is a worthwhile activity Repairing broken toys or household items is a great skill Reading for relaxation or to gain knowledge is effective Muscle tightening may develop from any of the following causes  School backpacks become very heavy with lunches and books  Handbags become heavy with coins, paperwork and makeup etc.  Bags of shopping may become very heavy over time  Shopping  Lifting and carrying heavy items  Moving furniture around the house to clean under may injure spine  Landscaping home in a day when unused to physical labour instead hire equipment to do the heavier work  Spring Cleaning entire house in one day may irritate injury  If injured, don’t constantly push the body past its limits cleaning, working, driving, looking after family etc, be gentle  Learn to know what body limits are for your particular injuries and gradually increase activities if able  If unable to sleep long periods of time, due to pain, get up and use the time to benefit by doing things not enough time for during the day, look on it as receiving bonus hours to do fun things like watching enjoyable movies, work on difficult projects on the computer, quiet housework not enough time during day to do, reading a good book undisturbed, doing jigsaw puzzle etc..  Accepting that sleeping as ‘normal’ people belief of ‘have to’ sleep at night for certain amounts of time may no longer apply  Sleeping during the day and working at night may be an option  If needing to sit long periods of time due to meetings, etc.. as soon as possible take as many short or medium walks to relieve pain  If a passenger travelling in vehicle, lift leg up one at a time and hold for count of five to stretch the back and relieve pain as often as necessary

 If driver of regular long distance travelling, stop at rest breaks and go for walks  Driving Trucks, Buses and larger vehicles places a lot of strain on entire left leg muscles and hip area with constant changing of gears if a manual  If watching T.V. sit with legs on footstool  Always keep moving, alternate between lying, sitting, walking etc..  Do short walks on level ground gradually increasing distance  Do walks and stretches in water for buoyancy to relieve pressure on back, warm water preferable  Go swimming and if needed wear buoyancy belt to keep back straight  Start your day with a very warm shower onto painful area  Start your day with warm up stretches and/or gentle exercise  Watch comedy or ‘feel good’ motivating movies  Read favourite Books  Watch sports.. if it cheers you up  Listen to music YOU like hearing, to relax and help you go to sleep with  Enjoy Hot spas  Enjoy Hot Thermal Springs using stretching movements while in them  Surround yourself with loving, cheerful friends and relatives  Listen to jokes on DVD’s, CD’s, T.V etc..  If needed have specialised Orthotics fitted  If needed Chiropractic or Osteopathic treatments to re-align spine When doing something liked that feels good, participation may improve, giving quicker recovery and a more positive outlook, relieving depression and stress, this may also help with sleep Many activities may be difficult to try, but what may be possible is only known when trialled, as in all things, even healthy people may suffer muscle pain doing activity for the first time, so if particular activity liked try several times before stopping and work up to it with gentle activity to start, doing more as improvement is felt, unless reactions are too severe of course

As seen, nothing advised here is extremely dangerous, but do discuss with Medical Practitioner anything that may be of concern before attempting, as each person is an individual and has their own medical profile relating to age, disability etc.. I advise strongly against Bungy or parachute jumping as forms of cross fun exercise so do think carefully when it comes to choosing activities to go play This book may be a quick fix problem solver with a long term solution for those who only have bad habits sitting slumped or too long in seats, or sleeping in bad posture at night, but for others it may take getting out there and trying again with fun exercise, massage, stretching in combination with simple solutions to Stop the Pain stopping the enjoyment of life Those prepared to put a little effort into health and recovery may be able to lead a near ‘normal’ life depending on the severity of pain problems and suffer minimal or less pain after learning about these simple easy to understand ‘pain prevention’ list Being unable to complete tasks may not be a sign of age but damage to the body of the Discs, Vertebrae or muscles and recognising limitations is the first step to learning how to live a near normal lifestyle Becoming frustrated at an inability to complete the simplest tasks is a normal response and one that may be used to accomplish much Rather than giving up and doing nothing due to how hard it is to achieve the simplest project, use that energy to find alternate ways to accomplish the same end result by tackling everyday tasks using different methods Living life differently takes patience, determination, practice and lots of thinking outside the box; once habits are changed it becomes easier to do Learning about the bodies muscle system and how they operate in easily understood sequences of events allows knowledge to achieve varied projects Household tasks Cleaning dishes at the sink involves standing in the same place for a length of time with minimal lower body movement, whilst slightly bent at the waist This places pressure onto the low back and if low back is damaged may cause gradual weakening of strength, tiredness and pain Any task that involves standing in the one position for any length of time may give the same results, but particularly if also bent at the waist

Evon

© 2011

36

Alternately changing types of tasks performed so the bodies muscles are being worked differently for shorter periods of time may relieve pressure on damaged sections of the body For example clean half the dishes then do another task involving the use of the legs walking, such as picking up and putting away items into other parts of the house, or walking out to the letterbox to collect the mail, or a short walk, then complete second half of cleaning the dishes When washing dishes or doing ironing involving standing in the one position for any length of time it may help to use a stool so the low back is supported in a half standing, half sitting position So long as the back has support of partially sitting, it relieves the pressure off the low back trying to support the entire weight of the body As with cutting vegetables, again sitting at the bench on a stool or at the table with a cutting board relieves the pressure on the back from standing still Simple changes can make all the difference to achieving multiple tasks, minimising the repercussions afterwards Instead of saying I can’t do it, say how can I do it differently? Vacuuming is again another slight bending at the waist pushing against the weight of the suctioning action of the cleaner placing strain onto the low back If at all possible have someone else do the vacuuming and if unable to, then accomplish the task in smaller amounts at a time with other activities between Gardening Weeding gardens involves bending over at the waist whether in a standing or kneeling position for long periods of time While weeding the body is held in a bent position without rest, placing all the strain onto the lower back area Wearing a back brace during the time of weeding may help, sitting on an object no higher than the knee for the duration of weeding or alternating another task at the same time, that requires use of the legs in a walking action allows the low back relief from a bent posture and stretches the buttock muscles loosening the tight pulling action of damaged muscles

Mowing grass, have someone else do the job, but if unable to, then accomplish the work in smaller amounts at a time with other activities in between Workplace Any job that requires the continuous use of a particular set of muscles may lead to damage such as typing, using a mouse, process work, driving, sanding, standing partially bent over, gardening, spray painting, house painting, cleaning, concreters, builders, plumbers, electricians, shearers and machinists Multi tasking, relieves the pressure placed upon any one set of muscles whether in the home, at work or sports Sports/Exercise If the same sport or exercise is participated in three or more times a week, year after year the same sets of muscles are being overused without rest, whereas if more than two different styles of sport/exercise activities are played the muscle actions used may balance the muscles movements to lessen the degree of damage, practice sessions use the same sets of muscles as games Sportsmen over develop ‘Quad’ muscles believing that they become stronger, when in fact it is weakening the muscles endurance and strength due to over tightening the sets of muscle groups necessary to perform any given task Not only does the ‘Quads’ become weak but also the attachments of the muscles at knee and groin resulting in ‘corked thighs’ or ‘snapped muscle’ being the result of all the overworking of the thigh Arthritis of the knee may result from the over tightening of thigh ‘Quad’ muscles and the knee being unable to receive sufficient blood flow to meet necessary requirements to operate at maximum levels Other damage of the knee may be from over tight ‘Quad’ muscles misaligning the top and bottom leg bones creating lopsided rubbing together of bones Continually playing the one sport or game to excess each week produces tight muscles from the same actions being used with no stretching or care of body injuries after game as most think because it’s not an athletic or paid sport that the muscles tightness and injury don’t need to be taken seriously

When the muscles are held in the one position time and time again damage may occur with a tightening effect happening so the muscles no longer have the ability to return to their normal resting length Once damage has occurred tightening becomes a normal state for the muscles to be operating under, adding enormous strain on any section of the body Whether it is the low back, the neck, the shoulders, arms or legs once under pressure to perform day in and day out for long lengths of time the muscles in that area become weakened and damaged, unable to perform normal tasks as easily as they once were able to Weightlifters tend to overwork the chest muscles forgetting to equally work the shoulder muscles at the same time for body balance of set muscle groups As with the low back, the immediate surrounding muscles and nerves go into the mid back, ribs, buttocks and pelvic region, all or one at a time reacting when the body is leaning over bent at the waist Usually as stated walking may relieve some of the pain suffered when any areas are inflamed from standing in a bent over posture, it may also be helpful to sit or lie down for a period of time When the body is in a bent over at the waist position all or some of the mentioned surrounding muscle groups tighten to support the lower back area while it is under duress of maintaining the bodies posture Normally when the body again stands up straight the muscle groups all relax into their respective resting length If muscle sections are unable to return to their normal resting length due to damage, they remain tight pulling against their attachments, creating pain and weakness in multiple groups of muscles The walking action, sitting or lying position all have the benefit of stretching the buttock group of muscles assisting in the release of prominent tight muscles involved with the low back area Sitting for extended periods of time requires the same release of muscles as standing bent over at the waist by walking or engaging in alternate tasks involving movement of the lower body

Arms, wrists, legs or knees etc also benefit from changing tasks on a regular basis to release the pressure placed on specific sets of muscle groups Feet Wearing a different style of shoe than normally worn may help muscles of feet and ankles thus also helping support the knees and low back properly Having thicker lining in shoe or thicker rubber sole on bottom of shoe cushions the muscles of the foot, giving comfort to stand for extended periods of time Pointy shoes crushing the toes together, causing bunions is unnecessary when wider shoes at the toes are more comfortable to wear, but still stylish High heeled shoes shortening the Achilles tendon may be reversed by gradually wearing slightly shorter heels until comfortable, lowering height as many times as necessary until able to wear small heeled shoes giving better support to body Changing sports shoes when showing wear on any section of shoe is sensible as sports when participated in usually involves slamming the foot down in different directions requiring the confidence of a shoe that will hold the foot in place without rolling over onto the side due to stretched sides of shoes, worn soles creating unequal balancing, thereby leading to spraining an ankle etc If possible have the shoe style necessary for the particular sport participating in, it’s no use having walking shoes if going to be running as the shape of the shoe has been styled to specifically suit the activity of walking, the foot hits the pavement at different angles for the two actions of walking or running, therefore the shoe is designed for that action specifically Check for wear of shoes underneath on sole at the heel or side of shoe and if there is, then having checked for the need of orthotics fitted to realign feet properly will help all areas of the body to straighten, releasing pressure on joints throughout the ankles, knees, hips and spinal column If the foot is properly cared for then the rest of the body has more chance of being aligned correctly If painful to walk on land then walk in water giving buoyancy to the body, relieving the pressure on the low back, knee, ankle or foot so the lower body is still able to have necessary movement to prevent stiffening joints worsening the condition

Upper body pain may also benefit from stretching in water giving movement to loosen stiff joints Bodywork in water is preferable with warm water (heated pool or spa), although seawater has good floating and healing abilities, but if not possible then cold water pool is better than not at all Do strengthening exercises with supervision for areas weakened by damage Overweight is extra unnecessary kilos to support on an already weakened body struggling with the burden of damage Although at first producing pain and exhaustion, sticking with a fitness programme produces many benefits, among them better sleep, quicker movements, lower pain levels, motivation and companionship Exercise does not need to be vigorous and pushing the limits, so long as it is something that is enjoyed to motivate wanting to return to do more often, such as swimming, golf, fishing, meditation, yoga, dancing etc Exercise may be as simple as starting with a five minutes’ walk around the house or shops then build up the time gradually until walking at a steady pace Watching TV while walking on the spot stretches muscles and keeps the mind distracted with favourite program or drinking plenty of fluids means plenty more times having to walk to the toilet, getting must do movement DVD’s of yoga, pilates, dances, exercises or stretches being changed daily or weekly so different muscles are used in multiple angles is excellent Upper body activities using the arms or hands may also be given alternate projects to alleviate overuse by using equipment larger or smaller than normal size or changing activity from drilling to sanding, or keypad from mouse, anything that involves using the sets of muscles at a different angle to rest the normal movement Exercise circuits at gyms are ideal as they alternate the muscles tension by operating the sets of muscles in turn without overworking one area Instead of seeing movement as ‘have to’ and don’t want to, find projects that motivates ‘to want to’ for the fun side of it because you enjoy it

Instead of complaining about something you cannot change and doing nothing because everything is too hard, too much pain, or not liked, then at least try alternate activities involving fun and laughter that is liked When dressing the lower body with socks, stockings, pants, slacks, trousers or shorts sit while doing so on a stable chair as the damage to ankle, knee, hip or low back tends to cause instability when trying to stand on one leg creating wobbling and possibly a fall resulting in a broken hip etc Ensure a chair is placed at the front and back doors of the house so visitors and self may sit whilst putting on and off shoes preventing possible falls Small floor mats need to be removed to prevent tripping and slipping on them Walking along any surface if occasionally trip now and then, it may be from damage to lower body, ankle, knee, hip or low back, as the muscles suffer damage they no longer have the same strength to be lifted properly off the ground when walking and so partly drag on the ground causing tripping Tiredness, long walks or any strenuous physical exertion may also weaken the muscles creating the same set of circumstances to trip over occasionally as the leg becomes weak and simply does not lift fully off the ground Cold weather, physically overworked, sitting long lengths of time etc the body stiffens up and limping eventuates until muscles warm so extra care needs to be taken at those times not to drag the leg and trip over Warm muscles means better movement so a very warm shower first thing upon rising allows the muscles to start activity sooner while lessening stiffness Sitting with the legs crossed at the knees or ankles tilts the spine placing pressure onto the nerves creating possible future long term damage Activity is damages best friend; it helps prevent major stiffening, lessens pain and allows movement to accomplish tasks and projects of normal daily living Although it pains to move the body, it eventually pains even more by not moving the body as it stiffens up from lack of use and pains more than it need The world is an open platter requiring another angle looking at it to see all the wonders that are available to start a new and exciting lifestyle accomplishing something always wanted to do, but were unable to previously, like singing, writing a book, inventing something, going to University/College

‘PAIN PREVENTION list’

Eight

LOW BACK ACHE  Avoid sitting for long periods of time as this puts the body into a position where prolonged pressure is placed on nerves, muscles and the spine resulting in inflammation and pain  Many people sit driving long distances and if they do stop for meal breaks sit again to eat without ever going for a walk before getting back into the vehicle to sit yet again for many hours  Watching T.V. for hours on end day or night no matter how comfortable the chair is may still produce inflammation and pain with misalignment  If watching T.V. using an exercise bike to pedal while watching or walking machine to have movement in your back and at the same time keeping weight down to help ease back ache  When attending conferences, regularly go for a toilet break to stretch or drop items on the floor and stretching down to pick up may ease aching  At Christmas time or special occasions sitting or standing for long periods of time talking to people at the parties may cause extreme pain in the lower back for a week or two afterwards unless treatment given

Painful Feet & shoes  Shoes are taken so much for granted when they are such an important investment to the bodies health

Evon

© 2011

43

 Check if shoe is worn on one side underneath as it may be a sign of fallen arches, high arches or rolling of foot and if so orthotics may help to correct alignment of the feet  People who do a lot of driving need to check the heel of their shoe for wear on one side underneath and replace shoe if necessary  If working on concrete floors all the time buy thick rubber soled shoes as this may cushion the feet to ease aching or thick cushioned inserts if specific shoes for work must be worn  Playing aggressive sports or running change shoes often as they may wear out quicker than normal sports activities shoes  Buy correct style of shoe for the particular activity participated in; feet cared for is proper back alignment and one less irritation

Knee joint deterioration  Unless all information is known there are many causes, but some of the following may help depending on specific area of knee deterioration  Look underneath shoes and if worn in one area regularly replace  Orthotics may be needed due to fallen arches, knock knees, etc  Injury to the feet or ankle may misalign the knee  Upper Quads deterioration may aggravate the knee  Low back injury may also place strain onto knee structure  Limping due to pain anywhere in the lower body may place pressure onto knee joint

Sitting incorrectly  It is easy to slouch when sitting for long periods of time, if needed buy a back support brace for when sitting for long periods of time at work or driving long distances until used to sitting upright, but do not use back brace all the time as muscles may become weak  If chair is too high to sit with feet flat on floor, sitting on edge of chair keeps back straight or use cushions placed behind back

Evon

© 2011

44

 Lounge chairs with wide seats use large thick cushions/pillows behind or sit with legs up on footstool or coffee table  Try not to cross legs at knees or ankles as it may tilt spine at an angle  Don’t sit on a large wallet in the back pocket as it may tilt the spine  when driving long distances make certain to stop for rest, both to become alert and also to help back by going for a striding walk, DON’T sit back down to eat but take food and eat while walking

Standing stationary too long  This is very difficult if at work where you need to stand most of the day, but if able to, continuously move a few steps sideways, backward or forwards  Stand with legs comfortably apart and not straight legged  With legs comfortably apart slowly sway from side to side  If possible access prop to enable half sitting half standing position  Lean against a wall or other safe structure with back pressed against it to support the weight of the body

Overweight Everyone knows the answer to that one so I won’t insult you with stating the obvious, but I’ll give you a couple of tips I use whenever my weight gets out of control and I need to lose weight  One is I start exercise that I love and know I may stick with that is fun 

golf, ten pin bowling, tennis, dancing lessons, body board surfing in small waves, snorkeling, national parks nature walks, camping

 spring cleaning house or garden shed, wash the car, gardening  walking outdoors at the beach on firm sand  I change my activities when they become too routine or boring  When I’m about to eat I stop and assess how hungry I am, whether I haven’t eaten for the last 4 hours means I need a proper meal not just a snack or whether it’s pain, tiredness or anger and I am in need of rest, medicine or time alone

Evon

45

Poor quality Mattress or Sleeping Posture  A mattress does not have to cost a fortune but it does need to support without sagging and throwing a body into awkward positions  Many low back conditions may be caused due to bad sleep posture  Waking up in the morning in a twisted heap body front down with face twisted to the side with or without arms under the pillow, top leg bent up in front of body and bottom leg straight out underneath  Good posture for sleeping may be obtained by sleeping on the back with pillows under the knees to minimize curvature of spine  Sleeping on side with the upper body kept straight and not twisted over, either both legs bent or lower leg straight with upper leg bent knee on knee (not one knee in front or behind the other)  Keep upper body straight using pillow in front of chest if needed

Heavy work loads Men’s Sports require they carry heavy loads of surfboards, canoe, motorbikes, boats, boat motors, pushbikes, fishing gear, bowling ball, golf equipment, etc.. At work many lift and carry heavy loads without mechanical support Loading trailers with gear and unloading trailers several times a day Filling vehicles with heavy equipment and removing them several times a day Pulling fully loaded heavy caravans onto vehicles tow bar or around campsite Landscape gardeners carrying heavy rocks, soil and plants around buildings Mowing lawns up and down hills and lifting mowers in and out of trailers Carrying heavy briefcases, computers, suitcases or product samples Working 16 hour days hunched over at a desk in an office Driving long distances five or six day’s straight every week Those not used to manual labour in one weekend building retainer walls for their new home, digging and planting several gardens and concreting paths etc.. Evon © 2011

46

 Instead of mowing up and down a hill start at the top of the hill mowing across coming down the hill and use small ramp to push mowers into trailer  Use proper hand trolleys or forklifts to move or carry heavy loads at work  Instead of trying to do everything in one weekend landscaping new homes take time to enjoy family and have friends help or hire equipment to do the heavier workload  If working over computer etc. most of week try to participate in physical activities on days off to release tight muscles from sitting same position  During the day every hour or two go for a short walk to stretch body Heavy workloads Women Years after my first injury my first child quickly taught me my physical limitations from the severe damage to my body When I needed to wash and change the baby I put the bath onto the kitchen table then carried small quantities of water to and from the bath I then wheeled the baby in the pram from the bedroom to the kitchen table only picking her up when next to the bath and while I was in a sitting position Sitting throughout the bathing and then lifting her out and drying and dressing her on the kitchen table was the only way I could safely lift the baby without my legs and low back collapsing under me in pain and weakness To carry the baby from house to/from car I used the pram to carry the weight as anything I held in front of my body caused my legs and low back to weaken and collapse under me with a feeling of going to pass out So I learnt to care for my two children by never bending over, instead sitting while dressing them, teaching them from young to climb into the car themselves, taking them to playgrounds to play on equipment as I could not get down low to play with them myself or walks along the beach rock pools, picnics, theme parks etc. so they did not miss out on a ‘normal’ life All the activities were chosen so I was able to stand or preferably walk while they amused themselves or were amused by others When I ironed or prepared food I did so from a sitting position and bought comforters and doonas instead of blankets for less bed making Carrying to/from vehicles heavy baby bags, groceries, Baby, purse and toddler at the same time, lifting pram and twisting to lift baby/toddlers in and out of Evon © 2011

vehicles, heavy furniture moved to clean around, bending making beds daily, standing ironing, cleaning entire house, heavy cooking pots carried multiple times a day lifting toddlers/baby into/out of bed/bath/walkers/high chairs/change tables dressing children, picking up and cleaning away items, vacuuming, gardening and mowing adding to lower back weakening  pushing an empty pram while carrying the baby, is not good for the body  when purchasing consider lighter weight pram for lifting  helping when able, have toddler climb in/out of vehicle and seat 

filling babies bath carry small amounts of water to/from bath, don’t carry the bath filled with water

 dress toddlers from a sitting position, not standing bent over them  sit at table or bench while cutting food for meals instead of standing  avoid carrying heavy pots of food/water take small amounts out of pot  try to remove unneeded items from your purse daily to lessen the load, only carry essential items needed for that day  for computer etc. buy a bag with wheels and pull it to take load off body  Hire a cleaner to do the harder cleaning jobs around the house Sports/exercise activities High impact sports and exercise activities may aggravate sensitive areas Tennis and basketball is high impact as the players run to catch the ball, twisting at the knees on an angle to stretch for the ball and suddenly stop which impacts on the knees and ankles Hockey and soccer places strain on ankles and knees with standing still for periods of time, then suddenly sprinting to hit or kick the ball from a cold start stepping into potholes twisting ankles and damaging knees; players deliberately tripping other player whilst they are running past Have any injuries attended to the same day for best results otherwise weakening may result from lack of proper care

Particular positioning of body or amount of time held at same angle may inflame sciatica into reacting If partner is overweight or mattress sags it may result in excess pressure on spine, if unable to purchase a firm mattress, place pillow under hips during sex Vehicles and other cramped locations may twist the body awkwardly during sex Cramped locations or particular positions may need to be avoided to have less pain afterwards Pregnancy A great deal of strain is placed on a women’s body when she is pregnant, both the extra weight she is carrying and the angle the weight is carried Pregnant Ladies may endure muscle spasms in the last few months of pregnancy in the groin and pubic areas from carrying the excess weight bearing load held at an angle. The last months prior to birth gently massaging the low back, entire length of Quads and inner thighs to groin area may relieve pain and encourage an easier birthing process Childbirth Enormous pressure may be placed on every area of a women’s lower body during the child birthing process aggravating the sciatica

You may wonder how or why all these everyday happenings would affect your Body? Not only do injuries create tight muscles in specific areas, but daily activities consistently followed may also tighten muscles in different areas of the body It takes many muscles in different locations to complete a project in daily life and if repeated many times, everyday may result in weakening of individual muscle systems that supports one another’s team effort Once one muscle is weakened and not given appropriate treatment for recovery it may then weaken the rest of the surrounding team effort creating a domino effect to the detriment of all connecting muscles The affect of all the muscle tightening of surrounding areas on nearby systems when known damage to muscles has occurred may need to be taken into account when health starts to deteriorate Individual body symptoms The following mentioned body symptoms are only some of the numerous possibilities available, when the following supplied knowledge is learnt and applied to any section of the body Ideally have a full body Remedial Massage asking for specific sections to be given extra time massaging that meet the information of the attachment, plus nerve route and connecting muscles being taken into account at the same time Whether a paid massage or a friend giving a free massage the style of massage itself is not of great importance, only the location it is applied to matters It is up to the individual preference whether the massage is soft or firm There are numerous different types and styles of massage machines to select from and it is up to the individual which one most suits them The following individual symptoms included are given as an example to learn where to apply the knowledge gained from these pages to self help At NO time is information given on HOW to massage, only on WHERE to apply massage on sections of the body to achieve the most effective recovery Although massage is the most effective form of treatment for muscle damage, any other modality may also be used if same information is applied as to areas

ACHILLES’ TENDONITIS Fast moving sport activities and exercise may provoke Achilles’ damage with the amount of excess pressure being placed on the calves and ankle to perform intricate movements at varying angles especially in cold weather conditions Over developing the calf muscles to extreme tightness may place pressure on the Achilles tendon through lack of flexibility Weakness in feet, such as fallen arches etc may require investigating for possible need of orthotics to correct angle of feet that may be affecting the foot structure Check if shoe is worn on one side as it may be a sign of fallen arches; knock knees, high arches, rolling of foot or bow legs Wearing inappropriate or worn out shoes when exercising, playing sports or while at work may eventually place added pressure on the Achilles High heeled shoes worn all the time may shorten the Achilles so that attempting to wear flat heeled shoes may create pain from the Achilles shortened condition pulling tight on the heal and ankle areas Gradually wear slightly lower heeled shoes over a period of time until able to wear flat shoes again, plus use stretches and massage on legs to loosen Achilles With any deterioration to the feet, whether due to Injury, wear and tear, genetic weakness, or inappropriate shoes, the muscle groups become tightened, placing pressure on the Achilles tendon Problems with the foot may need orthotics to help correct alignment of feet thus relieving pressure on the Achilles People who do a lot of driving need to check the heel of their shoe for wear on one side and replace more often if necessary Playing sports or running may need shoes changed often as they may wear out quicker than shoes at normal times and buy correct style for the particular activity participated in; feet cared for is one less unnecessary deterioration When Achilles tendon is injured, strapping the ankle area alone, without proper care to total treatment may lead to re-injuries or longer recovery times Achilles tendon is the bottom attachment for the calf (Gastrocnemius) muscles which attaches along the heel of the foot and over the ankle

Evon

53

Therefore the calf muscles are the ‘belly’ of the muscle needing treatment for over tight damage Upper attachment of calf muscle then becomes around the knee area This all means that the foot and ankle both need attention followed with the entire calf muscles and around the knee area Sitting on the ground with legs out in front pull toes back towards body and feel the Achilles pulling tight onto the heel

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed

 entire front and back of upper leg  Outer Sides of both lower legs  Entire Back of both lower legs (Calves)  Entire front of both lower legs  Above, below and around both knees (place towel over)  Ankles all areas surrounding (place towel over ankle)  Entire heel area  Under both feet  Top of both feet

ANKLES Fast moving sport activities and exercise may involve ankle damage with the amount of excess pressure being continually placed on the ankle to perform intricate movements at varying angles Basketball, Cricket, soccer and Squash are some activities that may damage ankles with the quick running movements that roll the foot over onto its side with full weight of body pushing onto the ankle while it is in a rolled over position This may create an imbalance affect on the body and being unable to recover balance easily while in unstable conditions, the foot further rolls over tearing ligaments already stretched beyond their limitations at the ankle Quick fast moving sports tend to have periods of standing still cooling down and then sprinting to chase the ball so that the muscles are continually alternating between cold and hot in short bursts of time When the muscle is cold it is easily damaged, whereas the warm muscle is flexible and able to twist and turn with less chances of injury Most sports are played in winter conditions for player comfort yet the cold weather conditions may lead to more injuries due to muscles being inflexible Sports that involve running and suddenly stopping are more prone to ‘twist, strain or sprain’ ankles from sudden full weight of the body still going forwards while straining against the ankle that is in a stopped position Players on average sports grounds have the added pressure of stepping into a hole in the ground twisting the foot into an awkward position pushing the muscles and tendons of the ankle past their abilities Some sports are played on concrete surfaces giving no flexibility at all for the feet and ankles as they come down hard onto solid surfaces Runners who use roads are pounding against hard surfaces and sloping road sides where the continual slope puts the ankle at an angle of extra strain

Evon

Š 2011

55

When running on side of road or gravel areas the ankle is put at risk with unstable ground shifting creating sudden sideways movement of the ankle Genetic weakness in feet, such as fallen or high arches, knock knees and bow legs etc. may be affecting the foot and ankle structure and the angle of the ankle may be compromised Weakness in feet, such as fallen/high arches etc require investigating for possible need of orthotics to correct angle of feet that may be affecting the ankle structure Check underneath shoes and if any wear at heels or sides of shoes may indicate a need for Orthotics Wearing inappropriate or worn out shoes when exercising or playing sports may eventually weaken the ankle With any deterioration to the feet, whether due to Injury, wear and tear, genetic weakness, or inappropriate shoes, the muscle groups become tightened, placing pressure and misalignment against the structure of the ankle and knee When injured, strapping the ankle only, without proper care to total Treatment may lead to re-injuries and continuing ankle weakness Movement of the Ankle involves the use of the muscles of the lower leg and the foot A mistaken belief is that only the Ankle is used to bring about inflammation and pain when playing sport whereas the twisting and turning involved, normally requires the use of the foot, ankle and leg muscles as a whole while under duress of being impacted with force To demonstrate this whilst sitting raise heel off ground leaning leg onto toes feeling how the entire calf muscles tighten together pulling on the ankle Then sitting on the ground with legs out in front pull toes back towards body and feel the Ankle pulling tight at the same time If the ankle is injured all the surrounding muscle groups need also to be attended to for improvement to be fully effective Standing for long periods of time in high heeled shoes may weaken ankle due to all the weight of the body pressing down onto the ankle at a sloped angle

Evon

Š 2011

56

Feet were never designed to place all the bodies’ weight onto the front pad of the foot but onto the heel and ankle together forming a solid structure while the foot and ankle is held in a flat position Once the ankle is held in a sloped position in high heeled shoes the front ankle muscles and tendons are already constantly being stretched beyond their limitations before any added pressure is applied to the ankle Muscles and tendons are designed for a specific action and are therefore a certain length to perform that task To expect a muscle and tendon to be stretched daily beyond its designated length and to still have full strength is unlikely to be possible Tendons make up the structure of the ankle that also travel through to the foot The muscle ‘belly’ of the ankle and feet are situated in the lower leg Upper attachments of the lower leg muscles are situated around the knee area To effectively have recovery the foot, ankle, lower leg and knee area all require attention at the same time To achieve positive results, Muscles and attachments may need to be given the following Specialised Massage Treatment to ALL mentioned muscle groups

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed  Outer Sides of lower leg  Entire Back of lower leg (Calves)  Entire front of lower leg  Above below and around knee (place towel over)  Ankles surrounding areas (place towel over)  Under foot  Top of foot

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body is normal throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task If the wrist is hurting, at the least the arm and hand may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results So many activities place strain on the wrist and forearm causing inflammation through repetitive actions in a twisting movement at the wrist joint Packing fruit into boxes or eggs into cartons, packing groceries onto shelves in supermarkets, all involve lifting and twisting the wrist while fingers are in a stretched state holding item Once fingers are holding in a stretched state, the tendons at the wrist are in a tightened condition before the added pressure of twisting being placed on them When fingers are relaxed the twisting action has little effect on the wrist area Using a computer mouse, both holding the mouse and pushing the button uses the fingers in a stretched state tightening the tendons at the wrist

Evon

Š 2011

58

The hand is held balanced above the computer mouse leaving the wrist resting on the surface and at the same time as the hand is raised at an angle, it is being moved in all directions bent at the wrist

Typing is another action where fingers are held in a stretched state while constantly moving, possibly tightening the tendons at the wrist Wrist pain and inflammation is usually brought about from overuse of either the forearm and/or the fingers tightening the tendons at the wrist area Unless the wrist structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm and fingers Specialised Massage Treatment of muscles may achieve positive results towards lessening pain and inflammation Aggravation of the muscles may be minimised by purchasing a computer mouse larger and smaller than the one in use and changing them on a regular basis so that the muscles are being used at different stretch lengths placing less strenuous pressure constantly applied onto muscles at the one position Changing the position of the mouse by using a shelf to lower or raise the angle of the mouse may ease inflammation Typing with another computer using different styles of keys may help ease pain Another option is to place the computer onto a shelf to raise the height and angle of typing Sitting at a lower table/desk will again adjust the angle of typing Sitting on a lower chair adjusting the height may change the angle of typing When packing items use of thick gloves may change the grip enough to ease pain Grabbing the items sideways instead of lengthways may help with inflammation Alternate hourly or daily between gripping smaller and larger items Adjusting your height by standing taller above or shorter below items will change angle of grip

Evon

Š 2011

59

Continuous overuse of wrist and fingers with the same action may weaken sections of the forearm leading to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Tendons that make up the lower structure of the muscle ‘belly’ are at the wrist that also travel through to the hands and fingers The muscle ‘belly’ of the wrist and hand are situated in the lower arm Upper attachments of the lower arm muscles are situated around the elbow area To effectively have recovery the Hand, wrist, lower arm and elbow area all require attention at the same time

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed

To achieve positive results, muscles may need to be given Massage Treatment to all following muscle groups on affected limb  Surrounds of elbow  Lower arm front muscles  Lower arm back muscles  Lower arm side muscles  Wrist all surrounding areas  Top of hand  Palm of hand  If needed also upper arm muscle

CONSTIPATION Constipation may be very distressing for the person suffering the condition

Consistent Constipation may be an irritation to Nerves from injuries old or new in different areas of the body, interfering with functioning of the bodies systems Over a period of time daily living conditions may create spinal deterioration, resulting in tight muscles of the body, the same as an Injury, Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration, and then due to constant aggravation the Nerves interfere with the stomach/intestinal muscular system Severe bouts of Constipation may occur due to the Nerve and Muscle systems aggravating the digestion through to elimination processes If any deterioration to Spine is suspected; receiving specialised Massage Treatment to muscles may lead to improvement from constipation The nerve and muscle irritation may also produce sensitivity to certain foods that further exacerbate the condition, so that avoiding wheat products (flours, pasta, cakes, and breads) may ease pressure on an already overstrained system Control of bowels may sometimes involve the use of surrounding muscles more than only those located at the stomach area Improvement of bowel control may be achieved if all the muscle attachment groups were given Massage treatment Without treatment being given to all attachments involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time

Evon

Š 2011

61

A mistaken belief that only the bowel brings about inflammation and pain is understandable, whereas the normality of everyday living involved, requires the use of several sections of the body at the same time to achieve specific actions The lower body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and attachments that wrap around the stomach and bowel Due to Sciatica nerve irritation and the muscles tightening reaction along the pathway of the nerve route sections it is likely to be aggravating the digestion and elimination system The sciatica nerve travels from the lower back area through the hips and buttocks passing through the pelvic regions on its way to the legs and feet With all the interconnecting muscle tightening throughout so many areas of the body at the same time large sections of the lower body may need attention Upper leg damage may also pull on the attachment points in the hip/pelvic region causing reactions in the bowel To have full effective recovery all areas of sciatica nerve route irritation may need treatment at the same time This therefore starts at the main pain producer of the L4-5, S1-3 meaning the low back and along the tailbone followed by the nerve route of hips and buttocks Followed by the stomach and pelvic region, leading into at least both the upper legs front and back The nerve route is no respecter of delicate areas interfering with the bowel and stomach functions with muscle tightening preventing proper elimination By relaxing the muscles in so many sections at once gives all the systems an opportunity to function properly Pain being produced from the sciatica nerve tightens muscles without relief until the sciatica is soothed To achieve positive results, muscles may need to be given Massage Treatment to all following muscle groups

Evon

Š 2011

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed  Entire back area from shoulders to hips  Both buttocks/bottom complete area  Groin area (another sensitive area necessary to massage)  Stomach area to rib cage  Outer Sides of both upper legs  Entire Back of both upper legs (Hams)  Entire Front of both upper legs (Quads)  Inner thighs of upper legs (this will be one of most sensitive areas necessary to massage to achieve results)  Above, below and around both knees (place towel over)

CORKED THIGHS Fast moving sport activities and exercise may produce corked thighs with the amount of excess pressure being placed on the knees and upper leg to perform continuous fast bursts of movement while in cold weather conditions Footy is well known as a sport that results in ‘corked thighs’ Over developing the ‘Quad’ (upper front leg) muscles to extreme tightness may place pressure on the knee, upper leg and groin area when over loaded from twisting and turning quickly Wearing inappropriate or worn out shoes when exercising, playing sports or while at work may eventually place added pressure on the knee and ‘Quads’ With any deterioration to the feet, whether due to Injury, wear and tear, genetic weakness, or inappropriate shoes, the muscle groups throughout the entire leg become tightened, placing added pressure against the thigh When injured, strapping the knee or middle of leg only, without proper attention of appropriate Treatment, may lead to re-injuries or longer recovery times

Evon

© 2011

63

Improvement of corked thighs inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the muscle groups attachments were also given treatment Without treatment being given to all muscle attachments involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time Full effective treatment is rarely given to the corked thigh as so many only attend to the middle of one muscle alone The twisting and turning involved, normally requires the use of the entire (Quads) thigh as a whole, the knee, groin and lower leg while placed under stress of being impacted with force The knee is placed under much pressure with all the thigh muscle attachments wrapping around it being pulled with force from over tight thigh muscles Inner thigh and quad muscle attachments play a major part in the groin area and need to be attended to at the same time Corked thighs in the middle of the muscle ‘belly’ of one muscle is only the muscle that gave out first with so much pressure placed on all the Quad muscles being daily pushed beyond their limitations The entire of the Quad muscles are most likely to be extremely over tight ready to collapse under the strain Lower attachments for the Quad muscles ‘belly’ wrap around the knee area Upper attachments for the Quad muscles ‘belly’ are in the front hip, groin area Only when the knee, pelvic region and groin area are given equal treatment time as the muscle ‘belly’ (Quads) may quicker recovery time eventuate Due to the tightening of all the Quad muscles the entire upper front leg and inner thigh area needs massaging at the same time To achieve positive results, Muscles and attachments may need to be given the following Specialised Massage Treatment to ALL mentioned muscle groups

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed

DEPRESSION Understandably when in pain 24 hours a day without relief the mind and emotions may be affected with depression that is difficult to shift Family and friend’s patience and sympathy lessen as the same health issues begin worsening and you don’t “just get over it” Staying upright in a sitting position takes so much effort that outings requiring sitting for long periods of time are too much of a struggle with pain Going to the movies or plays become impossible Jokes are no longer funny and parties or dinners are too much effort, noisy, irritating and painful experiences to be avoided if at all possible When everything you do means your body ‘pays you back’ for the next few days, the amount you do lessens and it becomes a struggle just to achieve the basics You no longer look at what you can’t do as the list is too long so you start to recognise what you may be able to do

DIABETIC Women Due to the blood supply not moving around the body efficiently many lose limbs unnecessarily when knowledge may prevent this from happening The legs are the last to receive blood flow, therefore they need all the assistance they can get to have the blood supply kept moving throughout the body to and from the legs Many are told the veins are so bad the leg has to be amputated to avoid gangrene Blood vessels may be compressed from leg muscle tightness suffered while playing sports with practice sessions several times a week overworking the leg muscles

DIARRHOEA Diarrhoea may be very distressing for the person suffering the condition

Consistent Diarrhoea may be an irritation to Nerves from injuries old or new in different areas of the body, interfering with functions of the bodies systems Over a period of time daily living conditions may create spinal deterioration, resulting in tight muscles of the body, the same as an Injury, Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration, and then due to constant aggravation the Nerves interfere with the stomach/intestinal muscular system

Irregular Diarrhoea with severe bouts of Constipation may occur due to the Nerve and Muscle systems aggravating the digestion through to elimination processes If any deterioration to Spine is suspected; receiving specialised Massage Treatment to muscles may lead to improvement from Diarrhoea The nerve and muscle irritation may also produce sensitivity to certain foods that further exacerbate the condition, so that avoiding wheat products (flours, pasta, cakes, and breads) may ease pressure on an already overstrained system Control of bowels may sometimes involve the use of surrounding muscles more than only those located at the stomach area Improvement of bowel control may be achieved if all the muscle attachment groups were given Massage treatment Without treatment being given to all attachments involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time A mistaken belief that only the bowel brings about inflammation and pain is understandable, whereas the normality of everyday living involved, requires the use of several sections of the body at the same time to achieve specific actions The lower body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and attachments that wrap around the stomach and bowel Low back injury may irritate the sciatica nerve which in turn then irritates the bowel region due to Sciatica nerve irritation and the muscles tightening reaction along the pathway of the nerve route sections it is likely to be aggravating the digestion and elimination system The sciatica nerve travels from the lower back area through the hips and buttocks as also passing through the pelvic regions on its way to the legs and feet With all the interconnecting muscle tightening throughout so many areas of the body at the same time large sections of the lower body may need attention Upper leg damage may also pull on the attachment points in the hip/pelvic region causing reactions in the bowel To have full effective recovery all areas of sciatica nerve route irritation may need treatment at the same time

Over time the muscles shortened condition may become chronic being unable to return to its ‘normal’ relaxing position This chronic state of tight shortened muscles may spread from one area to another weakening multiple sections of the body Neck and shoulder muscles may affect the face muscles To move or twist the neck in any direction requires holding of the head in position while upper shoulder muscles give any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required The shoulders carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity For example to nod the head, the upward and downward movement of the head requires the use of the neck muscles that also interweaves with the shoulder muscles At the same time the muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the head giving stability and movement to the head Therefore if the neck is hurting, at the least the shoulders and head may require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Muscles have many overlapping groups of muscles that allows movement of the body by each group supporting one another to achieve the goal Injury directly to the face itself may over tighten muscles at the same time as the nerve being damaged resulting in dropsy Neck muscle tightness affecting face muscles may aggravate face nerve resulting in dropsy Work related stress is difficult to deal with as employment is paramount for living standards and having fears may be sacked if any underlying problems on the job are spoken about The stress of holding a high pressure job being mentally worked to the maximum each minute of the day may take its toll Being in an unstable environment without knowledge of what may happen from one hour to the next is consistent stress Tensions resulting from personal life stressors on a daily basis may build up over a period of time

When the reaction to pain eases the muscle goes back to its resting length, no longer pulling upon attachment points But when pain or overwork continues on a daily basis to push the muscle past its limitations that is when the muscle becomes shortened long term and may be unable to return to its original resting length without assistance Once the muscle is regularly in a shortened state the muscle may become weakened Being weakened other muscles take over the work from the original muscles and quickly become overloaded themselves with the extra workload To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to move or twist the neck in any direction it requires movement or holding of head in position while upper shoulder muscles allow any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required, then the entire shoulders themselves carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body When arms are moved in any direction the muscles in the shoulders and upper shoulder interweave with the arm muscles influencing one another Arms, upper shoulder and shoulder movement interconnect with the muscles and muscle attachment groups of the neck area, one affecting the other Shoulder movement not only connects with the neck, but also pulls at the base of the skull Tightening of neck and base of skull muscles may eventually affect the head and face muscles The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles that wrap around the neck area pulling with force against attachment points Not only do injuries create tight muscles in specific areas, but daily activities consistently followed may tighten muscles that affect nerves

Hitting objects while twisting and turning the arm at an angle in a repeated pattern may eventually over tighten the muscles of the arm Golf and Tennis has the repeated action when hitting the ball with enough force upon contact to regularly jolt the elbow Holding heavy items while twisting and turning the arm at an angle in a repeated pattern may tighten the muscles affecting the elbow Spray painting and drilling involve holding heavy items in the hand while the arm muscles and elbow work to maintain balance and support weight of held object Hanging onto heavy items in the hand while the arm is held up in the air for long periods of time at an angle when spray painting or drilling, place pressure onto muscles of arm and may create pain and inflammation in the elbow Using a screwdriver turning screws or spanners loosening nuts while arm is held at an angle may tighten muscles of the arm affecting the elbow Altering your position when working by either standing lower or higher than the usual work level altering angle of equipment may ease strain on muscles Purchasing larger and or smaller handled equipment to alternate grip may help use different muscle groups easing the workload on one set of muscles On tennis racquets, golf sticks and screwdrivers the simple addition of tape may add thickness to the handle to give some pain relief Wearing gloves may add thickness to grip on handle, easing pain The Elbow takes a lot of the strain from tasks performed on a repeated basis when it involves the arm muscles being overloaded Movement of elbows usually involves the use of the upper arm, forearm, wrist, hand and shoulders

To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold a tennis racquet in the hand the fingers need to hold it tight from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm and shoulder holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, then swinging backwards

behind the body then using an overhead action to lastly hit the ball with force while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements Golf swing action of holding the stick in the hand with the fingers holding it tight from falling, the hand balances it in the palm while the wrist is held at an angle and then the entire arm and shoulder holds everything in position in an extended posture in front of the body in a downward position then swinging backwards with a follow through downward swinging action before hitting the ball with force There is no possibility of these movements in the body without the companion muscles being involved such as the fingers, the hand, the wrist, the forearm, the elbow, the upper arm and the shoulder to perform these simple tasks Improvement of elbow inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the connecting groups of muscles and attachments were also given Massage A mistaken belief is that only the elbow is used to bring about inflammation and pain when playing sports, drilling, spray painting etc., whereas the limb involved, normally requires the use of the fingers and hand in a tight held or holding position while under duress of being impacted with force The arm at the same time is normally continually used in a tightened condition held above the work area To demonstrate this, place one hand around forearm of other arm, then while moving fingers and hand of the held arm feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the wrist and elbow Unless the elbow structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm and shoulder Specialised Massage Treatment of muscles may achieve positive results towards lessening pain and inflammation

Due to the elbow being between both the upper and lower arm the muscles of both wrap around the elbow pulling against it In the majority of cases to use the arm for activities both the upper and lower arms would be involved

FEET Fast moving sport activities and exercise may involve feet damage with the amount of excess pressure being continually placed on the feet to perform intricate movements at varying angles Basketball, Cricket, soccer and Squash are some activities that may damage feet with the quick running movements pushing toes and feet against shoes while rolling the foot over onto its side with full weight of body onto them Quick fast moving sports tend to have periods of standing still cooling down and then sprinting to chase the ball so that the muscles are continually alternating between cold and hot in short bursts of time When the muscle is cold it is easily damaged, whereas the warm muscle is flexible and able to twist and turn with less chances of injury Most sports are played in winter conditions for player comfort yet the cold weather conditions lead to more injuries due to muscles being inflexible Some sports are played on concrete surfaces giving no flexibility at all for the feet as they come down hard onto solid surfaces Genetic weakness in feet, such as fallen or high arches, knock knees and bow legs etc... may be affecting the foot structure as the angle of feet may be compromised Standing for long periods of time on concrete in thin soled shoes may aggravate feet from the hard surface not allowing the feet any relief, whereas wearing thick rubber soled shoes cushions the feet Standing for long periods of time in high heeled shoes may damage feet due to all the weight of the body pressing down onto the front pad of the foot Feet were never designed to place all the bodies’ weight onto the front pad of the foot but onto the heel and ankle together forming a solid structure

With any deterioration to the feet, whether due to Injury, wear and tear, genetic weakness, or inappropriate shoes, the muscle groups become tightened, placing pressure and misalignment against the structure of the knee Unless feet structure is given proper care and attention, the spine may then begin to be effected with the misalignment produced from the damaged feet creating a slowly deteriorating ripple effect throughout other sections of the body Specialised Massage Treatment of muscles to entire leg and feet may achieve positive results for the improvement of feet alignment and lessening of pain Wearing inappropriate or worn out shoes when exercising, playing sports or while at work may eventually damage the feet Our feet carry the load of our entire body every day of our lives and are probably the most neglected body part of all If all muscles and attachments involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Full effective treatment is rarely given to the feet as so many only attend to the foot alone To demonstrate this twist and turn your feet, at the same time feeling how the entire lower leg muscles tighten together pulling on the ankle and feet Feet are the attachment area for the lower legs muscle ‘belly’ These lower leg attachments also affect the ankle area they pass through Upper attachments for the lower leg muscle is around the knee So to have fully effective recovery the feet needs treatment plus the ankles, then the lower leg muscles and the knees Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed  Outer Sides of both lower legs  Entire Back of both lower legs (Calves)

FINGERS Each finger individually, requires specialised Massage treatment to loosen over tight muscles tendons Fingers are in continual use and so much taken for granted that they are always available to do every necessary task Constant hard tapping of fingers may cause wear and tear on joints Care and attention of joints is a high priority if full use of fingers into older age is to be enjoyed To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the fingers are hurting, at the least the wrist and hand may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results

Muscles in the forearm and hand influence the movements of the fingers to enable normal daily functions Each finger individually, requires specialised Massage treatment to loosen over tight muscles and tendons Possible improvement of finger joints inflammation and pain, may be achieved when muscles AND attachments are given specialised Massage treatment After years of using the fingers to do daily tasks without care or occasional rest the fingers may become overused and inflamed An example of mistaken belief that only the fingers are used to bring about pain of the joints in the fingers is when crocheting, knitting or pressing trigger on spray guns etc are blamed, when in fact the twisting, turning and squeezing of fingers involved, requires use of the hand, wrist, forearm and most times the upper arm To demonstrate this, place one hand around forearm of other arm, then while moving fingers of the held arm feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the wrist, then the hand Fingers are constantly in use every moment of the day helping to dress, work, feed, drive, comb hair and scratch Each time the fingers are used the entire of the arm is also normally involved to accomplish the task The arms usually have heavy workloads placed on them putting strain onto the muscles of the arm which then tighten in response The tightened and at times damaged arm muscles then interfere with the fingers as the pulling action of the arm muscles interweaving eventually attaching at the fingers may bring about inflammation and pain when left untreated Not only do the arm muscles interfere with the fingers, but the wrist movements may also affect how the fingers respond When the entire arm from the upper arm ‘biceps’ then the forearm are taken into account each affecting the other and then add the wrist area, the pulling action of all together when damaged is considerable force upon the fingers

Movement of the body requires companion muscles involvement to perform the task Therefore if the low back is hurting, at the least the hips and legs will need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results The low back is the mainstay of so many muscles coming into contact from many different directions Group of Dorsal muscles (upper back muscles) interweave at the hips forming part of the lower back Stomach and side muscles interweave together to make a solid structure of the lower back area The back and side leg muscles help support the low back from below Buttocks give support from below the low back at the same time as movement to propel the body forward Many muscle groups interweave near the middle of the hip to give support and form what is termed the low back Many and various shaped muscle attachment points are a part of or surround the hip/low back area Fusions in the lower back may aggravate the Sciatica Nerve Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knees, ankles and feet to the big toe It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is affecting the muscles it is in contact with, which will react by tightening, creating more complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult Specialised Massage of the spine in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’ ideas for better body management that compliment maintenance, the problem may be contained, although ongoing massage may be needed as it is major damage creating continuous nerve and muscle interference

For example to move or twist the neck in any direction it requires holding of the head in position while upper shoulder muscles give any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required The shoulders carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity For example to nod the head, the upward and downward movement of the head requires the use of the neck muscles that also interweaves with the shoulder muscles At the same time the muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the head giving stability and movement to the head There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the neck is hurting, at the least the shoulders and head may require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Movement around the neck involves the use of more muscles than the singular area surrounding the fused vertebrae involved When using the neck to turn the head it takes the combined efforts of all the muscles in the upper shoulders and the main section of the shoulders The neck muscles attach in the main and upper shoulder sections giving strength to allow movement of the neck to turn in any direction at the same time as supporting the full weight of the head on the neck A neck muscle not only supports the head, but also allows the head to be turned in all directions as well as in an up and down motion Clavicles at the upper front chest have neck muscles attaching from another angle that again affect movement of the neck Arm muscles and nerves may also be affected by fusion of the neck area at times causing pins and needles or numbness of the fingers Due to all the different directions and angles involved in the complex job of moving the neck it is essential that all these attachment points and main muscles be taken into account at the same time for effective results

If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Without treatment being given to all attachment points involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles that wrap around the fused vertebrae area pulling with force against attachment points As in the case of fusions of the neck may aggravate the nerve sending pain down the arm tightening all the muscles along the pathway of the nerve The pain along the arm may be continuous or intermittent depending on the angle of compression of the irritation on the nerve When the muscles are tightened on a constant basis they may lose their ability to successfully return to ‘normal’ resting length and may become hardened Without correct treatment hardened muscles may easily be damaged with multiple muscle groups along the arm affected At times the fusion in the neck may place pressure against the nerve travelling into the head or face With the nerve pain passing into the head the muscle reaction may be similar to the pain along the arm Nerve pain in the face may feel like a ‘nervous tic’ pulling under or beside the eye, in the cheek area or beside the mouth Toothaches, jaw joint pain, tight jaw any of these conditions may be from a fusion pushing against a nerve Specialised Massage of the spine in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’ ideas for better body management that compliment maintenance, the problem may be contained from continuous nerve and muscle interference

Massaging the entire scalp and base of skull relieves pressure of tight pulling neck muscles All areas of Neck from the top of the shoulders to the base of the skull require massaging with gentle movements The entire shoulders from ribcage to neck may benefit from treatment If any nerve pain interfering with the Arms they may also need attention

FUSIONS shoulders Operations may be performed to fuse several bones (vertebrae) together to stop severe pain, usually due to damaged discs between the vertebrae Deterioration of discs between vertebrae may also cause natural fusion of vertebrae over long periods of time Severe injuries to the body may also result in fusion of the spine Fusion may occur or be performed anywhere throughout the spine, from the cervical (neck) to the tailbone Naturally occurring fusions from disc damage etc. may affect the nerve creating pain throughout different sections of the body

Surgical fusions are usually carried out to stop nerve pain already affecting the body To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to move or lift the arms in any direction it requires movement or holding of arm in position while main and upper shoulder muscles allow any directional movement of arms, then the entire shoulders themselves carry the weight and movement of all arm actions This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the shoulder is hurting, at the least the neck and middle back may require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Movement around the shoulders involves the use of more muscles than the singular area surrounding the fused vertebrae involved

Shoulders have many muscles from multiple directions attaching as they are the pivotal point of strength for many groups The arms attach to the shoulders strength to hold the weight of all that an arm does throughout a normal busy day Arms lift and carry heavy items on a regular basis, twist and turn or hold items for long periods of time Lifting the arms above the head or behind the back requires different muscles than pushing the arms out to the front of the body but all using the shoulders Weight of head and neck are carried, lifted and tilted on the strength of the main and upper shoulder muscles The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and tendons that wrap around the fused vertebrae area pulling with force against attachment points

Studying for exams is common headache activity due to worrying about passing the upcoming exams and all the study work involved holding the head at different angles or same angle for long periods of time The stress of holding a high pressure job being mentally worked to the maximum each minute of the day may take its toll with headaches Being in an unstable environment without knowledge of what may happen from one hour to the next is headache forming Tension headaches resulting from personal life stressors on a daily basis may build up over a period of time and not from a one off incident Whether friends or family if tension resulting from relationship is continuous over a period of time it may initiate tension headaches Receiving continuous bullying is trauma enough to produce headaches Emotional stress and tension headaches eventually tighten the muscles in the head, neck and shoulders When the muscles are tightening the headaches may increase in strength or continue for a long period of time Muscle tightness causing headaches is widespread and unrecognised Some workplace situations lend themselves to tight neck and head muscles when head is bent at an angle to look at computer screen or similar action Mechanics working underneath vehicles on hoists with head bent backwards or head is bent at different angles looking down into motor Builders and carpenters bend their head at different angles when using a drill or other equipment A lot of pressure is placed onto the shoulder, neck and head muscles when the head is held at an angle for any length of time When the muscles are tightened on a continuous basis they may become weak and are unable to easily resume a relaxed state Once muscles are regularly tight they may lose their elasticity to bounce back to normal resting length and become stiff necked with minimal movement

The shoulder muscles and the neck muscles attach to the head and for movement to happen all muscle groups need to work in unison together to perform the required action To move or twist the neck in any direction requires holding of the head in position while upper shoulder muscles give any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required The shoulders carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity For example to nod the head, the upward and downward movement of the head requires the use of the neck muscles that also interweaves with the shoulder muscles At the same time the muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the head giving stability and movement to the head Therefore if the neck is hurting, at the least the shoulders and head will require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Muscles have many overlapping groups of muscles that allows movement of the body by each group supporting one another to achieve the goal When one group of muscles become overworked all groups may be affected at the same time To be effective all groups of muscles may need to be given treatment at the same time Not only holding the head at an angle but also holding the arms up above the head or out in front of the body while using a drill, spray painting, house painting etc. places strain onto the shoulder and neck muscles When the shoulders and neck muscles tighten strain may be placed onto the base of the skull being an attachment point for those particular muscle groups With two groups of muscles pulling tight on the base of the skull over time the pressure builds to the stage that may produce headaches Proper treatment given to the shoulder and neck muscles at the same time as the entire head the headaches over time may dissipate Emotional and mental help to lessen the stress by talking about pressure of worries to a good listener may hasten recovery

A good listener whether it is your partner, a friend, a counsellor or a psychologist may be invaluable for releasing tension and stress When tension and stress is released regularly the muscles may have a chance to return to normal position Not only is talking an excellent reliever but taking regular holidays gives time out from everyday worries Having a sport or hobby that is fun rather than competitive may be relaxing Take an hour or half an hour a day to meditate or be alone to think quietly Overworking the upper body with hard physical labour each day without rest may be harmful over the years Mental stress as well as physical activities may tighten shoulder and neck muscles which in turn may tighten the muscles in the head and face Whether it is from stress or physical overload both affects the muscles equally Nerve pain affects the muscles to spasm pulling tight against tendon attachment points when the muscle shortens in response to nerve pain When the reaction to pain eases the muscle goes back to its resting length, no longer pulling upon attachment points But when pain or overwork continues on a daily basis to push the muscle past its limitations that is when the muscle becomes shortened long term and may be unable to return to its original resting length Once the muscle is regularly in a shortened state the muscle may become weakened Being weakened other muscles take over the work from the original muscles and quickly become overloaded themselves with the extra workload To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body When arms are moved in any direction the muscles in the shoulders and upper shoulder interweave with the arm muscles influencing one another Arms, upper shoulder and shoulder movement interconnect with the muscles and muscle attachment groups of the neck area, one affecting the other

Shoulder movement not only connects with the neck, but also pulls at the base of the skull Tightening of neck and base of skull muscles eventually affects the head and face muscles Full effective treatment is rarely given to face and head as so many only attend to the forehead on the face alone, ignoring the rest of the affected body Faces are not an entity all of their own, muscles connect together from face to head to base of skull to neck and to shoulders With nerve pain passing into the head or face the muscle reaction may be extreme when affected Nerve pain in the face may feel like a ‘nervous tic’ pulling under or beside the eye, in the cheek area or beside the mouth Toothaches, jaw joint pain, tight jaw any of these conditions may be from a nerve been impinged upon The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles that wrap around the neck area pulling with force against attachment points Not only do injuries create tight muscles in specific areas, but daily activities consistently followed may tighten muscles that affect nerves Once muscles are continuously tightened beyond normal limitations they may become damaged and unable to return to their normal relaxed state

Without treatment being given to all tendons involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time Full effective treatment is rarely given to Nerve and muscle as so many only attend to the one area alone, ignoring the rest of the affected body Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knees, ankles and feet to the big toe It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is also affecting the muscles it is in contact with, which may react by tightening, creating more complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to walk, the muscles of the leg move the foot into a forwards position, then the muscles of the foot and leg balances the body from falling while the other leg then moves forward past the stationary foot At the same time the hips are held at varying angles to hold the body’s weight in an upright position This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the low back is hurting, at the least the hips and legs will need attention at the same time to have effective recovery result Many muscle groups interweave near the middle of the hip to give support and form what is termed the low back Many and various shaped muscle attachment points are a part of or surround the hip/low back area Therefore if the low back/leg has a hot burning sensation, at the least the hips and legs will need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results

LOSS OF BLADDER CONTROL Being unable to control the urge to go to the toilet to urinate many times during the night may become stressful for many people in the home being woken and having their sleep disturbed During the day if same conditions apply then even more problems needing to duck out so many times with so many people in work place noticing how often Do you have an urgency to urinate and once at toilet only capable of releasing a small drizzle? Are you unable to release any urine even though suffering a severe pressure pain in your bladder to urinate? Finally when stop trying to urinate only to feel such urgency that again the agony of pressure pain sends you back to the toilet to again perform the same non productive activity on a regular basis day and night? At other times after finished urinating, any pressure against the bladder may suddenly expel large amounts of urine at the same time as not having the ability to stop the sudden gush Sudden gush has immediate wetting with inability to contain and any movement of body causes more uncontrollable wetting Even more disruptive for the person suffering the condition having to endure the embarrassment of what is happening to them and having no control

Loss of bladder control may be associated to injuries old or new in lower areas of the body, interfering with functions of the bodies system Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration may aggravate the bladder with constant aching pain irritating the nerves enough they tighten internal muscles creating an urgency to urinate Lower back deterioration may involve the sciatica nerve that is located in the low back, hip and pelvic area aggravating muscles and their attachment points that may affect the bladders proper functioning With the nerve irritating the muscle groups along the nerve route it becomes necessary to give treatment to larger sections of the body to overcome possible nerve aggravation The sciatica nerve travels from the lower back area through the hips and buttocks as also passing through the pelvic regions on its way to the legs and feet With all the interconnecting muscle tightening throughout so many areas of the body at the same time large sections of the lower body may need attention Upper leg damage may also pull on the attachment points in the hip/pelvic region causing reactions in the bladder To have full effective recovery all areas of sciatica nerve route irritation may need treatment at the same time This therefore starts at the main pain producer of the L4-5, S1-3 meaning the low back and along the tailbone followed by the nerve route of hips and buttocks Followed by the stomach and pelvic region, leading into at least both the upper legs front and back By relaxing the muscles in so many sections at once gives all the systems an opportunity to function properly Pain being produced from the sciatica nerve tightens muscles without relief until the sciatica is soothed Due to Sciatica nerve irritation and muscle reaction the following areas to massage takes into consideration all nerve route sections likely to be aggravating the bladder

Fusions, spurs or disc damage in the lower back may aggravate the Sciatica Nerve Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knees, ankles and feet to the big toe Dependant on the angle of compression against the Sciatica Nerve, pain may be felt in the most unusual ways, such as red hot burning in the pad of the foot, or ants crawling over the skin, or a bolt of lightning down the back of the leg As the Main body of the Sciatica nerve has smaller branches scattering in different directions from it, pain coverage may be extreme when at its worst constantly changing the areas affected It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is affecting the muscles, which may react by tightening, creating more complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles must work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body The low back being the mainstay of the body has enormous responsibility to maintain the stability of the body as one moving entity Water buoyancy in a warm pool may assist Walking and exercise movement Ask your therapist which exercises to do if having problems with movement To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles may need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body Specialised Massage of the spine in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’ ideas for better body management that compliment maintenance, the problem may be contained, although ongoing massage may be needed if it is major damage creating continuous nerve and muscle interference To achieve positive results, muscles may need to be given Massage Treatment to all following muscle groups If the sciatica nerve is involved, following the nerve route’s irritation on the individual muscle groups may take more time, but is a worthwhile effort

MIGRAINES Stress is high on the list for causing migraines Migraines from Work related stress are difficult to deal with as employment is paramount for living standards and having fears of being sacked if any underlying problems on the job are spoken about Being nervous about an upcoming event may trigger one off migraines Studying for exams is common migraine activity due to worrying about passing the upcoming exams and all the study work involved holding the head at different angles or same angle for long periods of time The stress of holding a high pressure job being mentally worked to the maximum each minute of the day may take its toll with migraines Being in an unstable environment without knowledge of what may happen from one hour to the next is migraine forming Tension migraines resulting from personal life stressors on a daily basis may have built up over a period of time and not from a one off incident

Whether friends or family if tension resulting from relationship is continuous over a period of time it may initiate tension migraines Receiving continuous bullying is trauma enough to produce migraines Emotional stress and tension migraines eventually tighten the muscles in the head, neck and shoulders Once the muscles are tightened the migraines may increase in strength or continue for a longer period of time Muscle tightness causing migraines is widespread and unrecognised Some workplace situations lend themselves to tight neck and shoulder muscles when head is bent at an angle to look at computer screen or similar action Mechanics working underneath vehicles on hoists with head bent backwards or head is bent at different angles looking down into motor Builders and carpenters bend their head at different angles when using a drill or other equipment A lot of pressure is placed onto the shoulder, neck and head muscles when the head is held at an angle for any length of time When the muscles are tightened on a continuous basis they become weak and are unable to easily resume a relaxed state Once muscles are regularly tight they may lose their elasticity to bounce back to normal resting length and become stiff necked with minimal movement The shoulder muscles and the neck muscles attach to the head and for movement to happen all muscle groups need to work in unison together to perform the required action When one group of muscles become overworked all groups may be affected at the same time To move or twist the neck in any direction requires holding of the head in position while upper shoulder muscles give any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required The shoulders carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity

For example to nod the head, the upward and downward movement of the head requires the use of the neck muscles that also interweaves with the shoulder muscles At the same time the muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the head giving stability and movement to the head Therefore if the neck is hurting, at the least the shoulders and head may require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Muscles have many overlapping groups of muscles that allows movement of the body by each group supporting one another to achieve the goal To be effective all groups of muscles may need to be given treatment at the same time Not only holding the head at an angle but also holding the arms up above the head or out in front of the body while using a drill, spray painting, house painting etc. places strain onto the shoulder and neck muscles When the shoulders and neck muscles tighten strain may be placed onto the base of the skull being an attachment point of the muscles With two groups of muscles pulling tight on the base of the skull over time the pressure builds to the stage of producing migraines Proper treatment given to the shoulder and neck muscles at the same time as the entire head the Migraines over time may dissipate Emotional and mental help to lessen the stress by talking about pressure of worries to a good listener may hasten recovery A good listener whether it is a partner, a friend, a counsellor or a psychologist may be invaluable for releasing tension and stress When tension and stress is released regularly the muscles may have a chance to return to normal position Not only is talking an excellent reliever but taking regular holidays gives time out from everyday worries Having a sport or hobby that is fun rather than competitive may be relaxing Take an hour or half an hour a day to meditate or be alone to think quietly

Overworking the upper body with hard physical labour each day without rest may be harmful over the years Mental stress as well as physical activities may tighten shoulder and neck muscles which in turn may tighten the muscles in the head and face Whether it is from stress or physical overload both affects the muscles equally Nerve pain affects the muscles to spasm pulling tight against tendon attachment points when the muscle shortens in response to nerve pain When the reaction to pain eases the muscle goes back to its resting length, no longer pulling upon attachment points But when pain or overwork continues on a daily basis to push the muscle past its limitations that is when the muscle becomes shortened long term and may be unable to return to its original resting length without support Once the muscle is regularly in a shortened state the muscle may become weakened Being weakened other muscles take over the work from the original muscles and quickly become overloaded themselves with the extra workload To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to move or twist the neck in any direction it requires movement or holding of head in position while upper shoulder muscles allow any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required, then the entire shoulders themselves carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body When arms move in any direction the muscles in the shoulders and upper shoulder interweave with the arm muscles influencing one another Arms, upper shoulder and shoulder movement interconnect with the muscles and muscle attachment groups of the neck area, one affecting the other Shoulder movement not only connects with the neck, but also pulls at the base of the skull

Tightening of neck and base of skull muscles eventually affects the head and face muscles Full effective treatment is rarely given to face and head as so many only attend to the forehead on the face alone, ignoring the rest of the affected body With nerve pain passing into the head or face the muscle reaction may be extreme when at its worst Nerve pain in the face may feel like a ‘nervous tic’ pulling under or beside the eye, in the cheek area or beside the mouth Toothaches, jaw joint pain, tight jaw any of these conditions may be from a nerve been impinged upon The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles that wrap around the neck area pulling with force against attachment points Not only do injuries create tight muscles in specific areas, but daily activities consistently followed may tighten muscles that affect nerves Once muscles are continuously tightened beyond normal limitations they may become damaged and unable to return to their normal relaxed state

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed The first group to massage, being the largest and most powerful pulling force against the head, is the shoulders Secondly massage the upper shoulders and neck area starting from shoulders up neck to base of head at hairline Then take particular care massaging the occipital (base of skull at hairline) over the entire sideways length of bone Follow the base of the head with massage movement over the entire scalp using all the finger pads at the same time Lastly finish with gentle massage movements over entire face, cheeks, jaw and forehead, paying particular attention to front and base of ears

MOUSE HAND So many place strains on their hand while using the mouse for the computer Unknowingly overworking tendons and muscles may create inflammation and pain with repetitive actions Fingers are prominently held in a stressed state at all times during use of the mouse The wrists also have enormous pressure placed on them at the same time When the fingers are relaxed the twisting action of the hand has little effect on the wrist area Using a computer mouse, both holding the mouse and pushing the buttons uses the fingers to excess Palm of hand muscles become over tight from being held in an awkward position while holding the computer mouse and pushing it in all directions when bent

As computer mouses do not always work first time many hold it tighter and push many times trying to get it to work, overstraining the fingers and hand Mouse Hand pain and inflammation are usually brought about from repeatedly overusing the hand muscles and tendons Unless the entire structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm Movement of hands also involves the use of the forearm, wrist and fingers If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Improvement of hand inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the muscle attachment groups were also given Massage treatment Full effective treatment is rarely given to the mouse hand as so many only attend to the palm of the hand alone ignoring the arm, wrist, fingers and back of hand To demonstrate, place one hand around forearm of other arm, then while moving fingers of the held arm feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the wrist, then the hand Holding the top and palm of the hand at same time feel how much movement is obtained when fingers are opened and closed in a tight grip To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements The arm is continually used in a tightened condition held above the work area Therefore if the fingers and hand is hurting, at the least the wrist and arm may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results

So many place strains on the hand while using the mouse for the computer, unknowingly overworking the tendons and muscles creating inflammation with repetitive actions Once fingers are held in a stretched state, the tendons at the wrist are in a tightened condition before the added pressure of twisting being placed on them When fingers are relaxed the twisting action has little effect on the wrist area Using a computer mouse, both holding the mouse and pushing the button uses the fingers in a stretched state tightening the tendons at the wrist The hand is held balanced above the computer mouse leaving the wrist resting on the surface and at the same time as the hand is raised at an angle, it is being moved in all directions bent at the wrist Those who hold onto the computer mouse with a tight grip or press hard on the button are forcing the fingers to work under pressure Palm of hand muscles become over tight when a firm grip of the hand is in a clenched state while using the mouse Mouse Hand pain and inflammation are usually brought about from repetitive use of the fingers, hand and wrist tendons and muscles At the same time the fingers are held in a stretched state in a tightened condition Unless the entire structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm Aggravation of the muscles may be minimised by purchasing a computer mouse larger and smaller than the one in use and changing them on a regular basis so that the muscles are being used under varied pressure Changing the position of the mouse by using a shelf to raise the angle of the mouse may ease inflammation Sitting on a lower chair adjusting the height will again change the angle the muscles are holding the mouse Forearms are the ‘belly’ of the muscles with upper attachments area being around the elbows

Arthritis usually occurs when a joint’s blood supply becomes inadequate for its needed function resulting in joint fluids decreasing and cartilage wears away, it may occur at any time after an injury or excessive wear and tear to a joint Injury or excessive wear and tear tightening muscles may slow blood supply to joints at the same time as producing damage to ligaments promoting arthritis Muscle tightness restricting blood flow to joints of the fingers while also pulling on attachment points near the joints themselves, may aggravate Osteoarthritis and prevent more effective pain relief Each finger individually, may require specialised Massage treatment to loosen over tight muscles and tendons Fingers are in continual use and so much taken for granted that they are always available to do every necessary task Constant hard tapping of fingers on surfaces may cause wear and tear on joints Pounding hard with the fingers onto computer keys over a long period of time may aggravate the joints Care and attention of joints is a high priority if full use of fingers into older age is to be enjoyed To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements A mistaken belief is that only the fingers are used to bring about inflammation and pain when working, whereas the twisting and turning involved, normally requires the use of the fingers, hand and wrist in a tight held or holding position while under duress The arm at the same time is continually used in a tightened condition held above the work area The mistaken belief that only the joints of the fingers are affected stops full effective treatment being given

OSTEOARTHRITIS of toes or foot To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to wiggle the toes, the foot balances the toes while the leg muscles hold the foot in place and all three areas muscles move at the same time to create movement in the toes This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the toes are hurting, at the least the foot, ankle and leg may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results To enable their normal daily functions, the muscles in the leg and foot influence the movements of the toes Muscle tightness restricting blood flow to joints of the toes while also pulling on attachment points near the joints themselves, may aggravate Osteoarthritis and prevent more effective pain relief If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Possible improvement of toe joints inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the attaching groups of tendons were also given Massage treatment The mistaken belief that only the joints of the toes are affected stops full effective treatment being given An example of mistaken belief that only the toes are used to bring about osteoarthritis in the joints of the toes is when types of shoes are blamed for the pain when in fact the wiggling and squeezing of toes needed to keep the body stabilised throughout the day requires use of the foot, ankle, lower leg and most times the upper leg as well To demonstrate this, place one hand around foot, then while moving toes of the held foot feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the ankle, then the calf

Without the toes giving stability to the foot while upright the body would constantly trip or fall over The weight of the entire body is placing pressure onto the toes while ever the body is in an upright position The other damage to the toes is daily kicking, stubbing, bending them backwards and squashing, heavy items falling onto the toes or breaking them Usually the toes are ignored and do not receive any care when injured Each time the toes are used the entire of the lower leg is also normally involved to accomplish the task The legs usually have heavy workloads placed on them putting strain onto the feet which then tighten in response If the arthritis is in the toes or foot, then not only the toes or foot, but also the ankle and the leg needs to be given treatment to loosen the muscles and quicken the blood flow to all these areas Legs that are constantly overworked become extremely tightened with an inability to return to normal resting length which in turn then interferes with the blood supply flow to the outer limb This dwindled supply of blood is unable to keep the joints fully supplied leading to possible arthritis Muscles in the lower leg are the ‘belly’ of the muscle with the lower attachments being the foot and toes while passing through the ankle Upper attachments of the lower leg muscle wrap around the knee For an effective treatment of the toes improving blood flow and releasing tight pulling muscles not only the toes, but also the foot, ankle, lower leg and knee need attention at the same time

PERIOD PAIN Period pain may be very distressing for some people suffering extreme pain every month Irritation to Nerves from injuries old or new in different areas of the body, may interfere with proper functioning of the bodies systems Over a period of time daily living conditions may create spinal deterioration, resulting in tight muscles of the body, the same as an Injury, Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration, and then due to constant aggravation the Nerves may interfere with the Hormonal or reproductive system Irregular or severe bouts of Constipation may occur due to the Nerve and Muscle systems aggravating the digestion through to elimination processes placing extra strain on the pelvic region interfering with hormonal system If any deterioration to Spine is suspected; receiving specialised Remedial Massage Treatment to muscles may lead to improvement of bowel movement A mistaken belief that only the hormonal system brings about inflammation and pain is understandable, whereas the normality of everyday living involved, requires the use of several sections of the body at the same time to achieve specific movements of the body The lower body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and attachments that wrap around the stomach, bowel and hormonal system Low back injury may irritate the sciatica nerve which in turn then irritates the reproductive/hormonal region due to Sciatica nerve irritation and the muscles tightening reaction along the pathway of the nerve route sections it is likely to also be aggravating the digestion and elimination system The sciatica nerve travels from the lower back area through the hips and buttocks while also passing through the pelvic regions on its way to the legs Upper leg and knee damage may also pull on the attachment points in the hip/pelvic region causing reactions in the reproductive/hormonal systems

To have full effective recovery all areas of sciatica nerve route irritation may need treatment at the same time This therefore starts at the main pain producer of the L4-5, S1-3 meaning the low back and along the tailbone followed by the nerve route of hips and buttocks Followed by the stomach and pelvic region, leading into at least both the upper legs front and back The nerve route is no respecter of delicate areas interfering with the bowel and stomach functions with muscle tightening preventing proper elimination By relaxing the muscles in so many sections at once gives all the systems an opportunity to function properly Pain being produced from the sciatica nerve tightens muscles without relief until the sciatica is soothed Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knees, ankles and feet to the big toe Dependant on the angle of compression against the Sciatica Nerve, pain may be felt in the most unusual ways, such as red hot burning in the pad of the foot, or ants crawling over the skin, or a bolt of lightning down the back of the leg As the Main body of the Sciatica nerve has smaller branches scattering in different directions from it, pain coverage may be extreme when at its worst constantly changing the areas affected It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is affecting the muscles, which may react by tightening, creating more complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles must work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body The low back being the mainstay of the body has enormous responsibility to maintain the stability of the body as one moving entity

It is not necessary to have an injury to create tight leg and lower back muscles, something as simple as continuously wearing high heel shoes or sitting incorrectly may be all it takes to pull tight leg and lower back muscles For example to walk in high heel shoes, the muscles of the legs and feet are placed under enormous pressure basically from walking all day only on the front pads of the feet and the toes Front pads of feet and toes were never designed to balance the entire weight of the body on their insufficient muscles Ankles and heels were designed with strong and extra muscles wrapping around each other to take the full brunt of the weight of the body with front pads and toes of the foot assisting and balancing the foot Added to the strength of the ankle and heel is the strong lower leg muscles interweaving together to complete the strength needed to carry the body While in high heel shoes the ‘Quad’ (upper front leg) and inner thigh muscles become overworked and tight trying to balance the entire leg structure whilst standing in an unnatural position Next to be affected is the knee and groin region as the tightness of the Quads and inner thigh muscles pull on the attachment points at both of those areas and may produce pain and nerve irritation in response At the groin and pubis areas the leg muscles pulling tight may affect the pelvic region muscles and nerves creating many strange and debilitating reactions As the body is placed into an unnatural position throwing the pelvic region into a tilted angle this further affects the body with unnaturally tight pulling muscles in the frontal pelvic and tailbone regions Then the final section to affect the pelvis is the lower back, top of hip area that has been so changed in position that added unnecessary pressure may be placed onto the sciatica nerve due to the angle of the hips Once pressure is continually placed onto the sciatica nerve the muscles in the pelvic region and lower back are tightened in a way that was never intended so that over a period of time with being out of alignment for so long the mainstay of the body at the low back area becomes weakened

PROSTATE INCONTINENCE Being unable to control the urge to go to the toilet to urinate many times during the night may become stressful for many people in the home being woken and having their sleep disturbed

During the day if same conditions apply then even more problems needing to duck out so many times with so many people in work place noticing how often Even more disruptive for the person suffering the condition, has to endure the embarrassment of what is happening and unable to control it

Prostate incontinence may be associated to injuries old or new to lower area of body (front, back or underneath) resulting in nerve and muscles interfering internally disturbing the proper function of the bladder muscles To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body Therefore if the prostate is affected, at the least the hips, groin and legs may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Damage to L3/5-S1/4 located in the middle of low back, top of hip area down along tailbone has a habit of irritating the sciatica nerve Once sciatica nerve is aggravated all surrounding areas along the sciatica nerve may become inflamed Not all areas along the sciatica nerve are affected simultaneously But, the areas that the sciatica nerve does infringe upon may disrupt the functioning of any of the body’s internal systems

When the body is in certain positions the sciatica nerve may react with various symptoms integral to that person Symptoms of the sciatica nerve may vary from hour to hour or over a long period of time dependent upon how long the nerve is affected For instance it may only be bothersome when in a standing or lying down Sitting may not irritate yet again the reverse could be experienced by others Finding out which irritations affect individuals may require careful attention when the symptoms are at the worst The nerves in the lower section of the body may react to the irritations by tightening the muscles inappropriately exacerbating prostate incontinence Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration may aggravate the bladder with constant aching pain irritating the nerves enough they tighten internal muscles creating an urgency to urinate Lower back deterioration may involve the sciatica nerve that is located in the low back, hip and pelvic area aggravating muscles and their attachment points that may affect the bladders proper functioning With the nerve irritating the muscle groups along the nerve route it becomes necessary to give treatment to larger sections of the body to overcome possible nerve aggravation It may seem like a lot of extra work but the benefits are worth the effort Nerve routes calmed by massage relieve the muscles being pulled tight which then takes the pressure off the muscle attachments benefiting all groups Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed  Massage entire back from shoulders to hips  Both sides of buttocks/bottom complete area  Outer Sides of both legs  Entire of both upper Back leg muscles (Hams)  Over and around both knees (place towel over)

RESTLESS LEGS It is well known and accepted knowledge that Restless legs Syndrome is a result of Sciatica nerve irritation Located in the lower back area the sciatica nerve is easily irritated and in turn then irritates the sciatica nerve located in the legs causing them to feel so annoying that the legs are constantly moved in an attempt to relieve the unbearable indescribable pain As the pain worsens the ability to stay still is near impossible so that sitting or lying down for any length of time is not an option Between standing, sitting, walking, running, swimming, thumping the legs with a fist, lying down or any other activity of movement, little seems to provide comfort towards easing the pain Because the pain originates at the low back sciatica nerve, it stands to reason that the low back is the place to start treatment necessary for relief Full effective treatment is rarely given for restless legs as so many only attend to the legs alone, ignoring the rest of the affected body The sciatica nerve starts in the low back and then travels throughout the hip area down the legs into the knees, ankles and feet to the toes

Is it any wonder so much pain is felt in the buttocks and legs when such a large area is covered by the sciatica nerve? Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs Dependant on the angle of compression against the Sciatica Nerve, pain may be felt in the most unusual ways, such as red hot burning in the pad of the foot, ants crawling over the skin, or a bolt of lightning down the back of the leg It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is also affecting the muscles which react by tightening and adding further complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult Therefore if the legs are affected, at the least the buttocks and low back may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Not only does the sciatica nerve travel from the low back to the feet through the hip area but the muscles all interconnect with one another throughout the same pathway while also tightening upon the attachment points The low back is the mainstay of so many muscles coming into contact from many different directions Group of Dorsal muscles (upper back muscles) interweave at the hips forming part of the lower back Stomach and side muscles interweave together to make a solid structure affecting the lower back area The back and side leg muscles help support the low back from below Buttocks give support from below the low back at the same time as movement to propel the body forward Many muscle groups interweave near the middle of the hip to give support and form what is termed the low back Many and various shaped muscle attachment points are a part of or surround the hip/low back area

Fusions, spurs or disc damage in the lower back may aggravate the Sciatica Nerve Not only do injuries create tight muscles in specific areas, but daily activities consistently followed may tighten muscles in the areas affecting the Sciatica Once muscles are continuously tightened beyond normal limitations they may become damaged and unable to return to their normal relaxed state If the sciatica nerve is involved, following the nerve route’s irritation on the individual muscle groups may take more time, but is a worthwhile effort The first section to start working on is the entire back area from shoulders to hips as the group of muscle ‘bellies’ and their attachments are located in these areas Next the hips and buttocks need massage as the group of muscle ‘belly’ located there pull on the hip section with the upper attachments

ROTATOR CUFF Injury or wear and tear of the Rotator Cuff affects multiple groups of muscles in the upper body and arm Long term overuse of upper arm and shoulder while carrying heavy loads are common complaints for rotator cuff irritations Holding the arm in a raised position for long periods of time may compromise the muscles abilities to give full strength performance Using force against chest/shoulder area in resistance work may weaken rotator cuff muscles (e.g. Football ram tackles) Regularly pushing downwards with pressure may inflame rotator cuff The inability to reach behind your body with your arm is another sign of damage

Evon

Š 2011

157

Being unable to pick up items when arm is in a backward direction indicates problems with the rotator cuff If ignored the condition may worsen to a serious stage requiring surgery Unless the rotator cuff is given proper care and attention the deterioration may weaken sections of the chest and shoulder To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles needs to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task The rotator cuff is so situated in the upper trunk of the body that it immediately affects interconnecting muscles that attach to the chest, shoulder, upper shoulder neck area, and the upper arm Therefore if the rotator cuff is affected, at the least the entire of the chest muscles from shoulder to Sternum may require treatment Then the upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow and if necessary to the wrist giving attention to the lower arm as it may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Followed with the muscles along the upper shoulders moving up the neck column to the base of the neck Lastly from the upper shoulder the entire of the muscles covering the Scapula (shoulder blade) through to Thoracic, also underneath the armpit around the ribcage from Scapula Each time treatment is given from the upper shoulder to the chest, arm or scapula always give extra time to the rotator cuff itself

REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body is normal throughout the entire body Evon © 2011

There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task If the wrist is hurting, at the least the arm and hand may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results So many activities place strain on the wrist and forearm causing inflammation through repetitive actions in a twisting movement at the wrist joint Packing fruit into boxes or eggs into cartons, packing groceries onto shelves in supermarkets, all involve lifting and twisting the wrist while fingers are in a stretched state holding item Once fingers are holding in a stretched state, the tendons at the wrist are in a tightened condition before the added pressure of twisting being placed on them When fingers are relaxed the twisting action has little effect on the wrist area A mistaken belief is that only the wrist is used to bring about inflammation and pain when packing products, typing, computer use etc, whereas the twisting and turning involved, normally requires the use of the fingers in a tight held or holding position while under duress of being impacted with force The arm at the same time is continually used in a tightened condition held above the work area To demonstrate this, place one hand around forearm of other arm, then while moving fingers of the held arm feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the wrist, then the hand Using a computer mouse, both holding the mouse and pushing the button uses the fingers in a stretched state tightening the tendons at the wrist The hand is held balanced above the computer mouse leaving the wrist resting on the surface and at the same time as the hand is raised at an angle, it is being moved in all directions bent at the wrist Typing is another action where fingers are held in a stretched state while constantly moving, possibly tightening the tendons at the wrist Wrist pain and inflammation is usually brought about from overuse of either the forearm and/or the fingers tightening the tendons at the wrist area

Unless the wrist structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm and fingers Aggravation of the muscles may be minimised by purchasing a computer mouse larger and smaller than the one in use and changing them on a regular basis so that the muscles are being used under varied pressure Changing the position of the mouse by using a shelf to lower or raise the angle of the mouse may ease inflammation Typing with another computer using different styles of keys may help ease pain Another option is to place the computer onto a shelf to raise the height and angle of typing Sitting at a lower table/desk may again adjust the angle of typing Sitting on a lower chair adjusting the height may change the angle of typing When packing items use of thick gloves may change the grip enough to ease pain Grabbing the items sideways instead of lengthways may help with inflammation Alternate hourly or daily between gripping smaller and larger items Adjusting your height by standing taller above or shorter below items may change angle of grip Continuous overuse of wrist and fingers with the same action may weaken sections of the forearm leading to Repetitive Strain Injury Those who hold onto the computer mouse with a tight grip or press hard on the button are forcing the fingers to work under extra pressure But using the mouse to excess is the most damaging to the wrist Typing, the fingers are held in a stretched state with continuous movement of the fingers and at the wrist causing inflammation of the tendons at the wrist Pain and inflammation are usually brought about from repetitive use of the forearm, fingers and wrist tendons and muscles Unless the entire structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm

Once spurs form they may press against nerves causing pain in many areas of the body Certain twisting and turning actions may aggravate pain from the spur pushing against the nerve Water buoyancy in a warm pool may assist Walking and exercise movement Ask your therapist which actions to avoid if having problems with movement To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to walk, the muscles of the leg work to lift the leg in an upwards direction and then moves the leg into a forwards position at the same time using muscles to place the foot at an angle ready to step the full weight of the body onto Once the foot is again planted onto the ground the entire leg and foot muscles prepare for and accepts the body’s weight moving forwards onto the entire structure of leg, knee, ankle and foot The muscles of the foot, ankle, knee and leg balances the body from falling while the other leg then moves forward past the now stationary leg At the same time the hips are held at varying angles during leg movements to hold the body in an upright position This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the low back is hurting, at the least the hips and legs may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Spurs in the lower back may aggravate the Sciatica Nerve Ischiatic (Sciatica) nerve is the largest and the longest in the body; it originates from the anterior branches of the 4th and 5th lumbar nerve and of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sacral nerve; when Disc Damage such as a bulging (Herniated/Prolapsed) disc occurs anywhere in these areas compressing the nerve, pain may be felt in different parts of the lower body usually involving at least one of the legs, knees, ankles and feet to the big toe

Evon

171

Dependant on the angle of compression against the Sciatica Nerve, pain may be felt in the most unusual ways, such as red hot burning in the pad of the foot, or ants crawling over the skin, or a bolt of lightning down the back of the leg As the Main body of the Sciatica nerve has smaller branches scattering in different directions from it, pain coverage may be extreme when at its worst constantly changing the areas affected It is reasonable to expect that all the pain created by the Sciatica Nerve travelling throughout the lower body is affecting the muscles it is in contact with, which may react by tightening, creating more complications; then surrounding tissues become inflamed making assessment or location of origin of pain difficult Specialised Massage of the spine in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’ for better body management that compliment maintenance, the problem may be contained, or ongoing massage may be needed if it is major injury induced, creating continuous nerve and muscle interference Once muscles are continuously tightened beyond normal limitations they may become damaged and unable to return to their normal relaxed state When the sciatica nerve is involved, following the nerve route’s irritation on the individual muscle groups may take more time, but is a worthwhile effort The first section to start working on is the entire back area from shoulders to hips as the group of muscle ‘bellys’ and their attachments are located here Next the hips and buttocks need massage as the group of muscle ‘belly’ located there pull on the hip section with the upper attachments Most people have the sciatica pain trailing down one leg at a time but if pain is moving between the two legs massage both legs Work throughout the (Hams) back of upper leg muscles and the (calves) back of lower leg muscle group If suffering pain in the foot or ankle then also give treatment to those areas

During life spurs may form around the vertebrae surface due to normal living standards placing wear and tear on the body Fractures not properly healed may form spurs on the vertebrae Accidents of all types may form spurs on the vertebrae over the years Damage to the bone whether minor or major may form spurs over the years Once spurs form they may press against nerves causing pain in many areas of the body Certain twisting and turning actions may aggravate pain from the spur pushing against the nerve Ask your therapist which actions to avoid if having problems with movement To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to move or twist the neck in any direction requires movement or holding of head in position while upper shoulder muscles allow any directional movement of neck and head while performing action required, then the entire shoulders themselves carry the weight and movement of all neck and head activity This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body As in the case of spurs of the neck may push against the nerve sending pain down the arm tightening all the muscles along the pathway of the nerve The pain along the arm may be continuous or intermittent depending on the angle of compression of the spur on the nerve When the muscles are tightened on a constant basis they may lose their ability to successfully return to ‘normal’ resting length and may become hardened Without correct treatment hardened muscles may easily be damaged with multiple muscle groups along the arm affected At times the spur in the neck may place pressure against the nerve travelling into the head or face With the nerve pain passing into the head or face the muscle reaction may be similar to the pain along the arm Evon Š 2011

Nerve pain in the face may feel like a ‘nervous tic’ pulling under or beside the eye, in the cheek area or beside the mouth Toothaches, jaw joint pain, tight jaw any of these conditions may be from a spur pushing against a nerve There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the neck is hurting, at the least the shoulders and head may require attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Movement around the neck involves the use of more muscles than the singular area surrounding the spurs involved If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Improvement of neck inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the groups of attachments were also given Massage treatment The upper body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles that wrap around the neck area pulling with force against attachment points Permanent pain relief may not always be possible when nerve damage occurs therefore many daily living conditions may aggravate the nerve region To achieve positive results the following muscle and attachment points may need to be given individual massage treatment

STRESS INCONTINENCE Being unable to control the urge to go to the toilet to urinate many times during the night may become stressful for many people in the home being woken and having their sleep disturbed During the day if same conditions apply then even more problems needing to duck out so many times with so many people in work place noticing how often Do you have an urgency to urinate and once at toilet only capable of releasing a small drizzle?

Are you unable to release any urine even though suffering a severe pressure pain in your bladder to urinate? Finally when stop trying to urinate only to feel such urgency that again the agony of pressure pain sends you back to the toilet to again perform the same non productive activity on a regular basis day and night? At other times after finished urinating, any pressure against the bladder may suddenly expel large amounts of urine at the same time as not having the ability to stop the sudden gush Sudden gush has immediate wetting with inability to contain and any movement of body causes more uncontrollable wetting Even more disruptive for the person suffering the condition has to endure the embarrassment of what is happening to them and having no control Stress incontinence may be associated to injuries old or new to lower area of body (front or back), nerves and muscles interfere internally disturbing the proper functioning of the pelvic floor muscles and bodily systems Damage to L3-L5 or S1-S4 located in the middle of low back, top of hip area down along tailbone has a habit of irritating the sciatica nerve Once sciatica nerve is aggravated all surrounding areas along the sciatica nerve may become inflamed Sciatica nerve is located throughout the hips, buttocks, leg, stomach and groin Not all areas along the sciatica nerve are affected simultaneously But, the areas that the sciatica nerve does infringe upon may disrupt the functioning of any of the body’s internal systems When the body is in certain positions the sciatica nerve may react with various symptoms integral to that person Symptoms of the sciatica nerve may vary from hour to hour or over a long period of time dependent upon how long the nerve is impinged upon For instance it may only be bothersome when in a standing or lying down position Sitting may not irritate yet again the reverse could be experienced by others

Finding out which irritations affect individuals may take careful noticing when the symptoms are at the worst Reading the ‘pain prevention list’ may explain different activities or non movement that may cause irritation to the body The nerves in the lower section of the body may react to the irritations by tightening the muscles inappropriately exacerbating Stress incontinence Specialised Massaging of specific locations in the lower body in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’ for better body management may compliment recovery resolving the problem, or ongoing massage may be needed if it is injury induced which may create continuous nerve and muscle interference Improvement of Stress Incontinence inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the muscle groups attachments were also given Massage treatment Without treatment being given to all Origins and Insertions involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time Full effective treatment is rarely given to the Incontinence as so many only attend to the one area alone, ignoring the rest of the affected body A mistaken belief that only the bladder brings about inflammation and pain is natural, whereas the twisting and turning of everyday living involved, normally requires the use of several sections of the body The lower body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and attachments that wrap around the bladder pulling with force To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to walk, the muscles of the leg work to lift the leg in an upwards direction and then moves the leg into a forwards position at the same time using muscles to place the foot at an angle ready to step the full weight of the body onto Once the foot is again planted onto the ground the entire leg and foot muscles prepare for and accepts the body’s weight moving forwards onto the entire structure of leg, knee, ankle and foot The muscles of the foot, ankle, knee and leg balances the body from falling while the other leg then moves forward past the now stationary leg

Damage to the tailbone tightens all the surrounding muscles escalating unnecessary pain levels Once the main and interweaving muscles connecting to the tailbone are attended to pain may be minimised and other health issues aggravated by the damage may also be managed Whether it is a fracture, bruising or other injuries to tailbone, for recovery the same treatment applies to them all Massaging to release the muscles from being over tightened may take the pressure off the tailbone, easing some of the pain At the same time massaging may also give the added benefit of removing the bruising from the damaged site, again easing some more of the pain Specialised massaging of the area may allow any constipation caused by the injury to also be relieved To achieve the simplest of tasks muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the tailbone is hurting, at the least the hips and legs may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results Low back spine and the tailbone are the central positions for muscle group attachments of the lower body If damage occurs to the lower spine and/or tailbone a wide coverage of muscle groups may be affected throughout the hips, buttocks, groin, stomach and legs Not only may the low back of the body, but also the front of the low body be subject to deterioration from damage The sooner massage treatment is given to loosen the over tight muscles and their attachment points along the spine and tailbone the quicker the relief from pain When the tailbone is first damaged the bruising and the muscular pain in all the areas surrounding the tailbone is so intense, to perform the simplest task such as walking or sitting is a near impossibility

Walking or sitting become possible again once the surrounding muscle groups are given treatment to release the intense pain of muscles pulling against the bones Muscle attachments pulling tight upon the bones may add pressure to their already misaligned position Being given massage to the entire surrounding groups of muscles and attachment points along the bone may release the congealed blood of the bruising and allow its movement through the system to dissolve While removing the damaged blood from the bruised site, the fresh blood may be able to circulate freely through the system promoting quicker healing Although it may be very painful the first time massaged, it is necessary for bones of the entire low back spine and tailbone to be carefully and gently worked on and around for treatment to be effective Working on and around the bones of the lower spine and tailbone may release pressure on muscle attachment fibres that originate from them Again the muscles themselves also need massaging to loosen the strong grip on the attachment points of the bones Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed  Entire area of low back  Both buttocks complete area  Both sides of tailbone close to bones  Both upper back legs

VULVODYNIA

185

Being unable to control the many discomforts Vulvodynia inflicts without warning upon the body is disruptive for the person suffering the condition

Vulvodynia symptoms may be an irritation to Nerves from injuries old or new in lower areas of the body, interfering with ‘normal’ bodily functions Over a period of time any of the daily living activities and conditions may create lower back deterioration, resulting in tight leg and hip muscles giving the same aggravation that an Injury, Disc damage or vertebrae deterioration would Due to the constant aggravation the nerves send signals tightening muscles within the entire hip area including the Pelvic and pubic region as also the legs This in turn may create feelings of stabbing electrical sparks, sharp itching, surface vaginal pain, severe deep internal vaginal pain Feelings of irrational uncontrollable sexual urges or loss of interest in sexual activities may also be a result of Vulvodynia Vulvodynia is a complicated syndrome involving the use of more muscles than the singular area involved Due to the location or positioning of the vulva, muscles from many surrounding directions are likely to be affecting its normal functioning The Vulva is halfway between the lower back and the Quads, two of the most highly overused muscular sections of the lower body As the ‘Quad’ or front leg muscles attach around the knee there is a lot of pressure placed on the knee itself due to the Quads ever tightening pull Inner thigh muscles also attach around the knee area adding pressure to sensitive attachment points The Quads and inner thigh muscles may tighten from simple everyday activities, exercise, sport or injuries Quad and inner thigh muscles not only attach around the area surrounding the knee, but also attach in the section surrounding the vulva/groin so that when the Quad and inner thigh muscles pull tight they may likely pull against the three locations of knee, vulva and groin attachment points causing nerve irritation and pain at those sensitive locations

Evon

186

Then all the nerves and tight muscles located in the lower back affect the buttocks, side of the leg and frontal pelvic area It is not necessary to have an injury to create tight leg and lower back muscles, something as simple as continuously wearing high heel shoes or sitting incorrectly may be all it takes to pull tight leg and lower back muscles While all the tight muscles pull at attachment points, nerves are irritated into affecting the muscles surrounding both the vulva and the anus promoting strange and debilitating reactions It is pointless trying to give treatment of lotions and potions only to the vulva area when the cause of all the debilitating symptoms may be originating from the low back and or legs attachment points and their tight pulling groups of muscles and nerves If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Without treatment being given to all attachment points involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time A mistaken belief that only the Vulva brings about inflammation and pain is natural, whereas the twisting and turning of everyday living involved, normally affects various sections of the body The lower body is placed under much pressure from all the muscles and tendons that wrap around the Vulva pulling with force from pain To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to walk in high heel shoes, the muscles of the legs and feet are placed under enormous pressure basically from walking all day only on the front pads of the feet and the toes Front pads of feet and toes were never designed to balance the entire weight of the body on their insufficient muscles Ankles and heels were designed with strong and extra muscles wrapping around each other to take the full brunt of the weight of the body with front pads and toes of the foot assisting and balancing the foot

Evon

Added to the strength of the ankle and heel is the strong lower leg muscles interweaving together to complete the strength needed to carry the body While in high heel shoes the ‘Quad’ (upper front leg) and inner thigh muscles become overworked and tight trying to balance the entire leg structure whilst standing in an unnatural position Next to be affected is the knee and groin region as the tightness of the Quads and inner thigh muscles pull on the attachment points at both of those areas and may produce pain and nerve irritation in response At the groin and pubis areas the leg muscles pulling tight may affect the vulva and anus muscles and nerves creating many strange and debilitating reactions As the body is placed into an unnatural position throwing the pelvic region into a tilted angle this further affects the vulva area with unnaturally tight pulling muscles in the frontal pelvic and tailbone regions Then the final section to affect the vulva is the lower back, top of hip area that has been so changed in position that added unnecessary pressure may be placed onto the sciatica nerve due to the angle of the hips Once pressure is continually placed onto the sciatica nerve the muscles in the pelvic region and lower back are tightened in a way that was never intended so that over a period of time with being out of alignment for so long the mainstay of the body at the low back area becomes weakened This low back weakening with consistent pain may affect the entire of the pelvic region including the vulva and anus areas Consistent pain in the low back and pelvic region may interfere with the reproductive and hormonal systems There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task or be adversely affected by them Therefore if the vulva area is affected, at the least the hips, stomach, groin and legs will need attention at the same time to have effective recovery result If any deterioration to lower body is suspected; using specialised Massage Treatment on specific locations of the lower body to sooth irritated nerves and relaxing overly tight muscles in combination with the list of ‘pain prevention’

WRIST To achieve the simplest of tasks the muscles need to work in unison with one another over a wide area of the body For example to hold something in the hand the fingers need to hold it from falling, the hand balances it in the palm, the wrist is held at an angle so it is upright and then the entire arm holds everything in position, usually in an extended posture in front of the body, while the shoulder supports the weight of all these movements This same reaction of using multiple muscle groups to move any small section of the body happens throughout the entire body There is no possibility of movement in the body without companion muscles being involved to perform the task Therefore if the wrist is hurting, at the least the arm and hand may need attention at the same time to have effective recovery results So many activities place strain on the wrist area causing inflammation through repetitive actions in a twisting movement at the wrist joint Once fingers are held in a stretched state, the tendons at the wrist are in a tightened condition before the added pressure of twisting being placed on them When fingers are relaxed the twisting action has little effect on the wrist area Packing fruit into boxes or eggs into cartons, packing grocery items into shelves in supermarkets, all involve lifting and twisting the wrist while fingers are in a stretched state holding item Using a computer mouse, both holding the mouse and pushing the button uses the fingers in a stretched state tightening the tendons at the wrist

The hand is held balanced above the computer mouse leaving the wrist resting on the surface and at the same time as the hand is raised at an angle, it is being moved in all directions bent at the wrist Those who hold onto the computer mouse with a tight grip or press hard on the button are forcing the fingers to work under added pressure But using the mouse to excess is the most damaging to the wrist Typing, the fingers are held in a stretched state with continuous movement of the fingers and at the wrist causing inflammation of the tendons at the wrist At the same time the fingers are held in a stretched state in a tightened condition Twisting of wrist when consistently turning screwdrivers fast may cause damage Pain and inflammation are usually brought about from repetitive use of the forearm, fingers and wrist tendons and muscles Unless the entire structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm Specialised Massage Treatment of muscles and tendons may achieve positive results towards lessening pain and inflammation Aggravation of the muscles may be minimised by purchasing a computer mouse larger and smaller than the one in use and changing them on a regular basis so that the muscles are being used under varied pressure Changing the position of the mouse by using a shelf to lower or raise the angle of the mouse may ease inflammation Typing with another computer using different styles of keys may help ease pain Another option is to place the computer onto a shelf to raise the height and angle of typing Sitting on a lower chair adjusting the height may change the angle of typing When packing items use of thick gloves may change the grip enough to ease pain Grabbing the items sideways instead of lengthways may help with inflammation Alternate hourly or daily between gripping smaller and larger items

Evon

Š 2011

Adjusting your height by standing taller above or shorter below items may change angle of grip Continuous overuse of wrist and fingers with the same movement may weaken sections of the forearm leading to weakened wrist Movement of wrists also involves the use of the forearm and hand If all muscles involved were to be given treatment, inflammation and deterioration of muscle groups may cease to hamper progress; how much more effective to treat the cause in its entirety Improvement of wrist inflammation and pain, may be achieved if all the attaching groups of tendons were also given Specialised Massage treatment Without treatment being given to all tendons involved only a third of recovery is likely and a longer period of healing time Full effective treatment is rarely given to the wrist as so many only attend to the wrist alone ignoring the arm, elbow and hand A mistaken belief is that only the wrist is used to bring about inflammation and pain when packing products, typing, computer use etc, whereas the twisting and turning involved, normally requires the use of the fingers in a tight held or holding position while under duress of being impacted with force The arm at the same time is usually continually worked in a tightened condition held above the work area To demonstrate this, place one hand around forearm of other arm, then while moving fingers of the held arm, feel the muscles moving beneath the holding hand, and then do the same experiment holding the wrist, then the hand Continuous overuse of wrist and fingers with the same action may weaken sections of the forearm leading to wrist problems Unless the entire structure is given proper care and attention the deterioration may produce weakening throughout other sections of the arm As the forearm houses the main muscles ‘belly’ the wrist, hand and fingers are the lower attachment areas while the elbow is the upper attachment area Because the forearm is the main muscle ‘belly’ it stands to reason that it needs the most attention to release its tightness pulling on all the attachments

Elbow, wrist, hand and fingers then require attention at the same time being the attachment points of the forearm’s muscles In general it is not unusual to find that the upper arms (biceps) are also in need of attention To effectively have recovery the Hand, wrist, lower arm and elbow area all require attention at the same time

Using an electric Massage Machine with wearing of clothing during use, place machine on lowest speed setting, using softest heads supplied, drape a towel over body to soften machine pressure when needed To achieve positive results, muscles may need to be given Massage Treatment to all following muscle groups on affected limb  Upper arm front (Biceps)muscles  Upper arm back (Triceps)muscles  Upper arm side muscles  Surrounds of elbow  Lower arm front muscles  Lower arm back muscles  Lower arm side muscles  Wrist below, above and beside  Top of hand  Palm of hand  Each finger individually
