Jersey. For business. For Life
1
The largest of the Channel Islands, and once part of the Duchy of Normandy when William the Conqueror invaded England, Jersey remained loyal to the English Crown after Normandy was lost by the English Crown, and so was granted a special relationship that today means that Jersey is a self governing British Crown Dependency that has its own financial, legal and judicial sytems.
The island boasts many wonderful beaches, little harbours, countryside and cliff walks that add to its charm and beauty.
Jersey is steeped in history with its fine castles built to withstand subsequent attacks from the French and structures built by the German forces during WW2 when the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied.
Residents and visitors keep busy and active enjoying the sea and land sports.
Benefitting from a thriving financial industry developed over many decades, Jersey is prosperous and is enjoyed by 108,000 people from different origins who have made Jersey their home.
It is a place where we feel safe, where there are many superb restaurants supplied with fresh seafood and the famous Jersey Royals and Jersey milk.
Those of us who already live and work here feel blessed and if you are looking to settle here too, here are just a sample of the properties available, though we have more at all price levels and on our Confidential List, so register with us.

The heights of the hammer: four astounding results from Christie’s Wine Department Auctioneer Charlie Foley looks at four magnificent lots sold under his hammer at Christie’s in 2021. 2021 was an amazing year for the Wine Department at Christie’s. Record prices for wines in their anniversary years was seen with Chateau Cheval Blanc 1921 and Grande Constance 1821. The largest ever wine and whisky auction was hosted at King Street in December, with a huge total of £7.8 million hammering to new homes. Hong Kong saw a stellar line-up of single owner auctions and Geneva saw it’s first online auction, achieving high prices for Bordeaux and Burgundy. Four lots captured our specialist’s attention last year and the results for these delicious lots, shows that bottles with a story, capture buyers attention.
Perrier-Jouët Brut Millésimé 1874 Selling direct from the Champagne House, this ancient vintage of Perrier-Jouët sparked a furious bidding war that sent the price spiralling to £42,875. This is the highest amount ever paid for a bottle of Champagne. Christie’s last sold the 1874 Perrier-Jouët in 1888 for £11 for 12 bottles (equivalent to £1,000 today). 1874 was an outstanding vintage which created huge interest in the wines from Champagne during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This wine was blended by Charles Perrier (son of the founders of the Maison), and is formed of the exquisite Chardonnay grapes from Cramant, one of the Maison’s original and most prestigious vineyards. The current Cellar Master has named this bottle ‘a testament to the heritage of the House’. The lucky buyer will able to visit Perrier-Jouët for lunch and a tour and collect their bottle, one of the rarest Champagnes in the world.
Château Latour 1961 The esteemed First Growth, Château Latour, in the Pauillac region of Bordeaux, released three magnums of the fabulous 1961 vintage in it’s 60th year at auction in Geneva last year. The lot steamed past it’s low estimate of CHF60,000 and went for CHF134,750. The 1961 vintage was the last under the ownership of the Ségur family, before the majority stake sale to Harvey’s of Bristol. Frost and poor fruit set ensured only a tiny crop of Cabernet Sauvignon could be harvested. These grapes were very tannic and powerful with huge concentration. This has given the wine the ability to age gracefully and for a very long time. Michael Broadbent MW gave the wine a rare 6 stars and in magnum the wine has an incredibly long lifespan. The owner of these pristine magnums could pass them down for their grandchildren to enjoy!
Armand Rousseau, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques 2005 Large format bottles capture the attention and imagination of buyers. They can start creating the guest list of people they want to share the larger than life bottle with or the extensive menu they wish to array alongside glasses from it. So it was with a rare as hen’s teeth Jeroboam of Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques 2005 from Armand Rousseau, sold in Hong Kong. Doubling it’s low estimate of HKD60,000 to smash down for HKD137,500, the Jeroboam was hard fought for. Multiple bidders vied for this monumental vintage of Pinot Noir from Burgundy. The huge price proves the power of Burgundy at auction, especially in Asia. Bidders and buyers are looking for hot-ticket names, like Rousseau, and when the lot is even rarer due to it’s large format bottling, they are prepared to dig deeper into their pockets.
The Ardross 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Cask, 200 litre cask The Ardross Sherry Cask 500 litre cask The Ardross Japanese Mizunara Oak Cask, 450 litre cask Cask sales have become a huge market in recent years and Christie’s is delighted to be able to offer rare casks of whisky direct from distilleries in our auctions. Three rare casks from the Ardross distillery shot over their low estimate of £80,000 last year and fetched £245,000. The 60,000-acre Ardross Estate was originally bought by the 1st Duke of Sutherland, who built a hunting lodge on the land. Later, the Estate split, and became fertile grounds for the Ardross Mains Farm. In early 2016, on a quest to find the rarest Scotch Whisky Single Malt stocks, Andrew Rankin, Chief Blender of Bowmore Single Malt fame, discovered the old Estate. In October 2019 Ardross Distillery produced and filled its first new make spirit. Andrew set in place the 25-year maturation strategy and the bespoke cask size, cask type and wood diversity were drafted. These three casks are Bourbon and Sherry use oak and a rare Japanese oak. The casks will continue to age at the distillery and can be bottled or sold on at the lucky buyers discretion. 13

Meet Robert Broughton Robert Broughton, Senior Client Advisor and Director at UBS shares his thoughts on his career, his industry and the benefits of living and working in Jersey
Born in Jersey, Robert has had an interesting and varied career so far, travelling extensively and spending several years living and working in the Middle East before coming back to the Island 13 years ago to join UBS.
How did you come to work at UBS? I was working for a major global bank in Dubai in a role that involved travelling around the region to look after the needs of wealthy individuals as well as attracting new clients. Towards the end of my secondment in Dubai, I happened to be chatting to a senior individual at UBS and I found out that they were looking for someone to join the team in Jersey. After a number of conversations, it became clear that a move to an institution where the primary focus was wealth management made great sense for me. With UBS being the largest global wealth management firm in the world, I would have the opportunity to provide clients with an unparalleled offering. It was also the perfect time for my wife and I to move back to Jersey and be closer to family whilst giving me the next step on my career ‘ladder’.
What is it like to work at UBS? It’s good fun! I think UBS is an organisation that challenges its employees whilst treating them in the right way. We are encouraged to make sure that we are doing the right thing for our clients as well as the organisation. UBS Wealth Management in Jersey is set up with a very singular focus on providing wealth management solutions for locally based clients which means that I have clarity in terms of what my job role is and what I should be delivering.
What do you like to do in your spare time? Family is obviously the biggest thing. My wife Natasha and I have two young children,
Sophia and Harry, who are currently 7 and 5 respectively. We live close to Anne Port on the east of the Island so we can often be found down on the beach with the kids. I love most sports and used to play a lot of cricket and rugby but time is limited so trying to get a regular game of golf is about the extent of my ambitions at present! I am a member of the Royal Jersey Golf Club in Grouville and play off a 5 handicap.
What do you enjoy most about your job? The people interaction. Most of my day is spent speaking to clients or colleagues and this is something that I really enjoy.
How do you think client relationships are best developed? I think it’s important to have a relationship with a client that they feel comfortable with and that UBS engages with as many of the family members as possible. It’s also important that clients know they are not just dealing with an individual but an institution that can provide them with a first-class platform and service.
What are your clients currently asking about? Obviously COVID-19 and its effect on the world markets is an ongoing conversation point, as it has inflicted one of the worst crises of our lifetimes for public health, individuals, businesses and society. My recent conversations with clients has underlined the increasing interest in financing the transition to a low-carbon economy, supporting sustainable and inclusive growth and improving portfolio risk management in the face of 21st century challenges. At UBS, we’ve made sustainable investments our preferred choice for private clients investing globally, so I work with my clients to help them align their portfolio with their principles.
What is the year ahead likely to bring for wealth management? After two years marked by disruption, loss, lockdown and reopening, at UBS we believe we’re on the cusp of a Year of Discovery. 2022 is likely to be a year of two halves. Elevated growth and inflation in the first half will create opportunities in cyclical markets, including the Eurozone. But with lower growth and inflation to come in the second half, healthcare, a relatively defensive sector, is well-positioned. Continued low rates, yields, and spreads mean that investors will need to think differently to find yield. Looking further ahead, the net-zero carbon transition and surging technological disruption are proving to be the biggest investment trends of the decade. This brings opportunity in greentech and sustainable solutions, and in enabling technologies like AI, big data and cybersecurity.
What is the best thing about working and living in Jersey? I think it’s that feeling of ‘city life’ by the sea. I think Jersey punches above its weight in terms of being able to access a challenging and varied professional life and really strong work dynamic but then having all the benefits of family life. Jersey is a great place to raise kids and even though I have a busy work life, I don’t have a long commute and still get to spend plenty of quality time with my wife and children. Work/life balance is very much a phrase that gets thrown around but in Jersey it is just the way of life.
Where would you definitely take a visitor to Jersey? I would take them to Gorey. I think it really encapsulates the very best of Jersey. It’s a lovely place to spend time and watch the world go by… and the restaurants in the area are first-class!
Will she always be this happy? Live a good life on a healthy planet? Can sustainable investing protect her future?
For some of life’s questions, you’re not alone. Together we can find the answer.

The Magnificent Jewels Sales November 2021 achieved a total of CHF 60’312’250 / US$ 65’498’319 with bidders from 30 countries participating in the auction. On 9 November, Christie’s had the unforgettable experience of offering for sale two historic diamond bracelets, formerly the property of Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France (1755-1793). It was well documented in history that in 1791, whilst imprisoned at the Tuileries palace, the Queen meticulously packed up her jewels for safe keeping outside of revolutionary France. Amongst these jewels was a magnificent pair of diamond bracelets, commissioned in 1776 by the Queens’ personal appointed jeweller, Charles Auguste Boehmer for 250,000 livres. Over 200 years later, having passed through the French Royal family, these diamond bracelets were sold in a packed room at Christie’s for CHF 7’459’000 / US$ 8’086’513. Other historic and royal pieces highlighted the sale, including the ‘ears of wheat’ tiara of Pauline Bonaparte (1780-1825) for CHF 810’000 / US$ 878’143 and a ruby brooch (originally a pair of earrings) from the French Crown Jewels sold for CHF 250’000 / US$ 271’032. Following the successes of our November 2021 auctions, Christie’s is now inviting consignments to our May and July 2022 jewellery auctions. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a free and confidential valuation.

As we head into what will be our third summer living with the pandemic, we are still in some ways adjusting to our ‘new normal’. Even at its height, people still needed to travel, for work, health or other reasons. As the restrictions continued, so interest in private aviation soared. With very limited scheduled flights available, businesses were looking for efficient and time-saving ways to get together for face to face meetings; and families were looking for flexible, ‘covid-secure’ and often last-minute options for their family holidays.
We have welcomed the first UK based Gulfstream G280 to the fleet. A ‘super midsize’ brand new aircraft, this nine-seater aircraft is impressively agile on short runway take off and landings. It handles exceptionally well in high-altitude airports and low-visibility conditions - perfect for a ski trip or other European hop. Equally happy on a longer run, it’s revolutionary wing design and engine technology come to the fore, meaning optimum fuel efficiency and support for environmental sustainability as far afield as New York or Dubai. The other addition to the fleet in Jersey is the new Bombardier Challenger 650. Seating up to 12 passengers, the Challenger is known for its smooth ride, cabin space, high speed internet connectivity and superior fuel efficiency. With other aircraft planned to join the Jersey based fleet this Spring, plus the ultra-long range Global 6000 and Global XRS capability based at our new international headquarters in Farnborough, Gama has charter operations to suit whatever your personal or business need.
Taking you to new heights
With private jet charters available pretty much 24/7, safety and privacy, as well as flexibility and efficiency, have become the travel priorities for many. Even as the global travel industry gets back on its feet and our industry colleagues are thankfully in a much better position than 12 months ago, private aviation continues to flourish, with interest in jet ownership possibilities, as well as charter.
We work seamlessly with our Farnborough HQ based colleagues through Gama’s in-house, 24/7 operations team, and are well placed to service the expected further rise in demand, as we continue to support our Jersey based and visiting clients. We look forward to hearing from you.
At Gama Aviation we have onboarded two new flagship aircraft to Jersey in the last 12 months and our charter business is busier than ever.

Now what seems to be the problem? Inflation illness or called for cure I recently had my annual health check, which involved a series of different tests and completing an exhaustive questionnaire about my lifestyle. The purpose of collecting all this information is twofold; 1. to determine my current state of health and 2. to see if there are any negative trends developing. If any changes to my lifestyle are required to improve my health, they are recommended and I can decide to take action accordingly. But what do medical checks have to do with evaluating the impacts of inflation? When assessing the health of the economy, economists, central bankers, and investors perform a series of quantitative and qualitative tests, just like the health check. Should any of the resulting data show signs of economic ill health, governments and central banks can stimulate the consumer (the economy’s immune system) into action through a series of fiscal and financial ‘shots in the arm’. In the last 15 years we have seen a number of ‘shots in the arm’ to stimulate the consumer; zero to negative interest rates in developed economies, asset purchase programmes and loser credit terms, to help a reeling global economy recover from the Global Financial Crises (GFC, 2008), European Debt Crises (2011) and COVID-19 (2020) amongst others. A ‘confident’ consumer supports corporate profitability, leading to tax revenue for governments and a healthy economy. However, until 2021, inflation remained stubbornly below the ‘Built-in’ target level of 2% set by the US FED, Bank of England and ECB. Yes, for a healthy economy we need a bit of inflation, just like we need a little fat in our diet to be healthy. However, again like a high-fat diet, too much or the wrong type can lead to complications in the future, potentially clogging up the arteries of the financial system.
Given the level of liquidity injected into the global economy by central banks, as shown in the chart to the left below, it is perhaps not surprising we are experiencing a spike in inflation now. Adding to the stimulus, we also experienced a transition to ecommerce — stimulated by the lockdown measures and a massive reduction in spending on services such as restaurants, leisure activities, and holidays. Spending was diverted to goods, pelotons, pets, and used cars. Supply could not keep pace with the rise in demand, a situation exacerbated by zero COVID policies in the Far East economies which forms the world’s manufacturing hub, as well as cargo ships getting stuck in canals. All of this led to the classic inflationary scenario: an excess of demand for too few goods or ‘demand pull’. We also witnessed a massive jump in the cost of energy and commodities, increasing the cost of producing things, corporates increased prices and passed the cost onto consumers. Events continue to unfold in Ukraine agitating already elevated energy and food prices. We all hope first and foremost for a resolution to the humanitarian crisis that we are witnessing escalate. Only once there is a clear outcome will we see more stability to energy supplies and prices and relief of the ‘cost push’ inflationary pressure. What happened to the value of our assets? Most of us have used cars which may have appreciated in value, and some of us have property which has also risen globally. However, we use them, so we do not directly benefit from increasing prices, but it is nice to see the upward trend.
Source: Statistics Jersey – Jersey Retail Price Index – December 2021
In Jersey, inflation last year was printed at 3.8% year on year in December 2021. Interest rates on cash deposits are negligible so cash lost value in 2021 to the tune of c. 3.5%. Property in Jersey was very much in the ‘stuff’ we want and need category of consumer spending. Average house prices increased by 11.4%* up to the end of Q3 2021 a return above inflation, or ‘real return’ of 7.6%. *source: https://www.gov.je/Government/JerseyInFigures/ HousingLiving/pages/houseprice.aspx Inflation was running hotter in the major western economies, the chart below shows the cumulative impact of inflation and the table beneath it shows the December readings (YTD) for the UK, US and European economies. Cumulative inflation form Dec 2001 to Dec 2021 and the trailing annualised figures

What about inflation looking forward? Remember, we also perform tests to see if there are trends developing and the adjacent chart shows an upward trajectory for inflation that steepened significantly in 2021. If inflation were to remain at over 5% into 2024, this would not be healthy for the economy, therefore some adjustments need to be made. In response to the rising inflation trend, significant changes were made to central bank rhetoric, all of them (UK, US and EU) acknowledging that inflation may be persistent rather than transient, and they have all looked at the data and taken action to change consumer behaviours. First they took away the proverbial ‘punch bowl’ by announcing timelines to ending the various asset purchase programmes highlighted above. Then they provided ‘forward guidance’ on their intention Source: Morningstar to raise interest rates, with the UK and US already moving rates up and multiple increases expected during 2022. Both of these actions are intended to curb borrowing and consumer spending. Some speculate that inflation has already run away, and central banks have done too little too late. However, if we refer to the table (above right) showing the ‘trailing annualised returns’ of inflation over 20 years, the UK and US are averaging inflation rates at 2.23% and 2.31% respectively, only slightly above the 2% ‘healthy’ target, the EU at 1.9% is still under shooting. So even though the rhetoric has switched to ‘persistent’ from ‘transient’, this could be a matter of perspective. From a long-term perspective, things seem to be on track — inflation is trending upwards, but steps have been taken and further steps flagged to ‘up the dose’.
Source: Morningstar
Those with a portfolio of assets, including property and a diversified multiasset class portfolio (see glossary)/ invested pension, should have seen their wealth increase ahead of inflation, despite the negative performance in bonds as global equities rallied 20.1%* in GBP terms. *MSCI ACWI in GBP terms source: Refinitiv Datastream
What does this mean for asset prices? When a healthy immune system encounters a virus it has met before, there is a ‘learned response’. Similar to central banks, who adapt their ‘learned response’ to persistent inflation, allowing the data to show a more definitive trend before influencing the consumer to cool through changes in their monetary policy. Here is where we believe banks have acted prudently. There is a difficult balancing act; increasing interest rates too much can clog up the system as money supply slows and the consumer stops spending, too little action and inflation runs away and consumers stop spending as the price of goods spiral. Market consensus is indicating inflation peaking in the first quarter of 2022, and in response to the above central bank actions, will fall to between 3-4% by the end of the year. The chart, bottom right, shows the long-term performance since 2001 of some major asset classes net of inflation, as measured by US Consumer Price Index.
Source: Global Financial Data, *** and **Robert Shiller/Smith & Williamson Investment Management LLP, data as at 31 July 2021 *Performance is calculated in real terms in local currency, deflated using US CPI, annualised since 1 January 2001 to mid-21 The purpose of the above chart is not to stimulate a wholesale switch from one asset class to another, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. It gives an indication of the ‘learned response’ we might expect from investors. When inflation starts to pick up, some assets perform better than others.
Prognosis For now, it seems the consensus is that inflation is at or near its peak, though threats from the situation in the Ukraine and China revisiting their lock-down policy in the face of rising Omicron cases will continue to weigh on markets and elevate inflation expectations. We have seen the beginnings of a switch to spending on services due to the ebbing social distancing and travel restrictions, which if a trend will support economic growth. This would support the economy and ease ‘demand pull’ inflationary pressure. If the Far East can return to full capacity, we will also see the supply side ‘cost push’ pressures on inflation alleviated; particularly if we energy and food security improved through a swift resolution to situation between Ukraine and Russia. We believe this will lead to inflation falling back to 3% towards the end of 2023. Given valuations and other economic health indicators we believe, in such a scenario, equities and property will out-perform cash, bonds and gold in 2023. So ultimately and perhaps rather predictably, our recommendation is that same as that of my doctor, a few tweaks into the existing balance and “everything in moderation”.
