2 THE SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN • News Media Production will provide you with a real-world work environment that wlll prepare you for college and beyond. You will develop writing, critical thinking, leadership, photography, design, marketing, time-management, and problem-solving skills that will stick with you, even if you don’t pursue journalism as a career.

3 TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES • Being a member of the staff means that you will have the opportunity to attend national journalism conventions. In the last six years, we have been to Boston, Washington DC, Orlando, Indianapolis, Dallas, and New York City. In the next three years, we plan to attend conventions in Washington DC, Philadelphia, and again in New York City.

4 FAMILY ATMOSPHERE • News Media Production provides a sense of belonging unlike anything else at Huntley HS. Wearing Voice shirts on distribution days. Secret Santa and a Christmas party at the adviser’s house. End of the year get-togethers. Summer barbecues. KEMPA journalism camp for editors and staff. When you enroll in News Media Production, you join a family with hundreds of alums going back over 20 years. The Voice is a community where you can be yourself and belong.

A research study of 31,175 college students conducted in 2008 found that students with journalism experience in high school earned higher scores than non-journalism students in these areas: • • • •

High school overall grade point average ACT Composite score ACT English score College freshman English grade Study conducted for the Newspaper Association of America Foundation by Jack Dvorak, Ph.D., director of the High School Journalism Institute and a professor at the School of Journalism at Indiana University

Meet ADVISER the D

ennis Brown teaches News Media Production, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure. He has advised publications at HHS for 22 years and has spoken on numerous topics in journalism at local and national conferences. Mr. Brown is a member of the Illinois Journalism Education Association Board of Directors and president of the Northern Illinois School Press Association. In 2007 he was named a Special Recognition Adviser by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. In 2010, he was chosen as one of eight “Those Who Excel” teachers in the state of Illinois, a finalist for Illinois Teacher of the Year. In 2017 he was named the Kettle Moraine Press Association’s Nancy Becker Newspaper Adviser of the Year. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BA in English and theology in 1992 and from Roosevelt University in 1999 with an MA in Secondary Education/English.
